Summary The elemental compositions of chloragosome granules in the earthworm Lumbricus rubellus living in non-polluted and heavily Zn-polluted soils were determined by fully quantitative electron probe X-ray microanalysis. P, Ca, S and Zn were the major elemental components of the chloragosomes. The in vivo accumulation of Zn by the chloragosomes was accompanied by diminished chloragosomal Ca concentrations. Zn was apparently bound by at least two ligand pools (Pool 1=uncharacterised; Pool 2=P-containing ligands, binding approximately 45% and 55% of the Zn, respectively) in the control chloragosomes. In Zn-contaminated chloragosomes, most (70%) was bound by P-containing ligand(s) but some (<1%) was also bound by S-containing ligands. It is suggested that the sequestration of Zn in chloragosomes results in the detoxification of the metal by accumulative immobilisation.  相似文献

Summary The localisation and distribution of 10 vertebrate-derived neuropeptides in the earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris, have been determined by an indirect immunofluorescence technique. The peptides are pancreatic polypeptide (PP), peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY), neuropeptide Y (NPY), glucagon (C-terminal), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI), gastrinreleasing peptide (GRP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neurotensin (NT), and met-enkephalin. For 6 of the peptides — PYY, NPY, PHI, glucagon, GRP and CGRP — this is the first demonstration of their presence in any annelid, and NT has not previously been described in an oligochaete. Cell bodies and nerve fibres immunoreactive to the 10 peptides occur throughout the CNS. In the PNS, epidermal sensory cells displayed immunoreactivities to PP and PYY, and PP-, PYY-, NPY-, PHI- and GRP-like immunoreactivities occurred in nerve fibres supplying the main body muscles. Nerve fibres immunoreactive to PP and PYY are also associated with the innervation of the gut (pharynx, oesophageal glands, and mid and posterior regions of the intestine). No endocrine cells immunoreactive for any of the antisera tested could be identified in the gut epithelium, suggesting that dual location of peptides in the brain and gut epithelium is a phenomenon that occurred at a later stage in evolution. No immunoreactive elements were detected in any of the organs and ducts of the reproductive and excretory systems.  相似文献

Carbohydrate residues were localized in the glandular cells of the epidermis of Lumbricus terrestris by lectin histochemistry. The following biotinylated lectins were used: ConA, PNA, WGA, UEA-I. Each lectin has a specific binding pattern in the epidermal glandular cells. The ConA binding is evident in the orthochromatic mucous cells; PNA in the metachromatic mucous cells; WGA in the neuroendocrine-like cells; UEA-I in the cuticle. The epidermal glandular cells possess specific sites for the different lectins in relation to their functional characteristics. Therefore, these sugar residues indicate different behaviours of the cells in epidermal functions related to ion transport, receptor-secretory processes and defence.  相似文献

Blood follicles of the earthworm Amynthas are hemoglobin-containing, sac-like dilatations of blood vessels which connect to the general circulation. Grape-like clusters of follicles are found posterior to the pharynx, among tufts of micronephridia, and single follicles are located among cells of the pharyngeal gland. In Lumbricus, follicles take the form of simple swellings and irregular-shaped diverticula of nephridial capillaries. The fundamental structure of the wall of follicles and of vessels in both genera is the same and consists of two layers: an extracellular vascular lamina and an outer (coelomic) covering of smooth muscle-like myoperithelial cells. Hemocytes may be free and circulating or they may facultatively attach to the vascular lamina as littoral cells, constituting an incomplete endothelium-like surface. Hemocytes that appear to be in the process of attaching or detaching are rounded, while adherent cells are flattened and elongate. Free and littoral hemocytes actively endocytose packets of circulating extracellular hemoglobin. Hemocytes within follicles possess radiating cell processes which also endocytose hemoglobin. Although these cells were presumed to secrete hemoglobin, staining with 3,3′-diaminobenzidine confirms the presence of hemoglobin only within pinosomes and not within protein-synthesizing or packaging organelles. The presence of hemosiderin-like bodies suggests that follicular hemocytes catabolize hemoglobin. Blood follicles apparently provide a means of significantly increasing cell-surface area for hemoglobin processing, without substantially increasing the volume and pumping load of the circulatory system.  相似文献

The reorganization of the GABAergic system was studied by means of immunohistochemistry after the symmetrical and asymmetrical (unilateral) extirpation of the brain of the annelid Eisenia fetida. GABA-immunoreactive neurons were first observed in the wound tissue on the 3rd postoperative day. Thereafter the number of labelled cells gradually increased, and by postoperative days 76-80 all GABA-immunoreactive cells (approx. 140 neurons) could be found in their final positions in the symmetrically regenerated brain. After asymmetrical brain extirpation, nearly all cells (70-75) could be detected in the regenerating hemisphere by postoperative days 50-56. In the early stages of the asymmetrical regeneration of the brain, more GABAergic cells were concentrated dorsally and laterally in the preganglion than during the symmetrical type of regeneration. In both types of regeneration, the immunoreactive neurons in the regenerated brain originated in part from undifferentiated neuroblasts situated in different parts of the body, and in part from dividing neurons localized mainly in the pharyngeal nerve plexus. Both exogenous GABA and picrotoxin, applied during the early stages (days 10- 12) of brain regeneration, inhibited the development of the wound tissue and the migration of the neuroblasts and the enteric neurons. At the same time, exogenous GABA application accelerated the proliferation of the pharyngeal neurons. No effect on the process of regeneration could be demonstrated when exogenous GABA and picrotoxin were given together.  相似文献

The elemental compositions of chloragosome 'granules' in the earthworm Lumbricus rubellus living in non-polluted (Dinas Powys) and heavily Pb-polluted (Wemyss) soils were determined by fully quantitative electron probe X-ray microanalysis. P, Ca, S and Zn were the major elemental components of the chloragosomes. High Pb concentrations were found in chloragosomes of Wemyss animals; Pb was not detected in chloragosomes of Dinas Powys animals. Partial correlation and regression analysis indicated that the in vivo accumulation of Pb by chloragosomes was accompanied by diminished chloragosomal Ca concentrations. Pb is bound by P-containing ligand(s) in the chloragosome matrix. The sequestration of Pb by chloragosomes results in the detoxification of the metal by accumulative immobilization.  相似文献

New earthworm samples from Cyprus are assessed and discussed. A re-evaluation of specimens previously relegated to the Southern Alpine species Perelia nematogena (Rosa, 1903), revealed two independent species: Perelia phoebea (Cognetti, 1913 Cognetti, L. (1913): Escursioni zoologiche del Dr. E. Festa nell’Isola di Rodi V. Oligocheti. Bollettino dei Musei di zoologia ed anatomia comparata della R. Università di Torino, 28, 16. [Google Scholar]) ,described originally from Rhodes Island, (Greece) and an undescribed species Perelia makrisi sp. n. The new species is similar also to the Levantine Pe. galileana Csuzdi &; Pavlí?ek, 2005 and corroborates the hypotheses that the autochthonous earthworm fauna of Cyprus is of Levantine origin.

Plesiomorph characters for the oligochaete spermatozoon are proposed. The chief trends from these plesiomorphies have been elongation of the acrosome and its tube; withdrawal of the primary acrosome vesicle and the axial rod into the acrosome tube and development of a capitulum; development of connectives from the secondary tube to the axial rod (though there is some possibility that the reverse, absence of connectives, is plesiomorph); detorting and shortening of the midpiece (or possibly, again, the reverse) with an increase in numbers of mitochrondria from the plesiomorph four to eight; modification of the base of the tube to form a hen of variable form; and, in one line (lumbricids) flattening of the tip of the nucleus and correspondingly of the limen. Sperm ultrastructure, examined for 9 oligochaete families, corresponds well with taxonomic and phylogenetic groupings recently recognized by the author. However, convergent similarity of the phreodrilid sperm to that of the Lumbricina suggests a corresponding alteration of fertilization biology in the phreodrilids. The results indicate that the Haplotaxidae lie at the base of the opisthopores, though they do not unequivocally contraindicate acceptance of a Haplotaxis-like form as a stem form of the Haplotaxida (opisthopores and Haplotaxidae) and Tubificida. An even more basal position for prosopores, now represented by the Lumbriculida, cannot yet be dismissed.  相似文献

Ultrastructure of the Tubificid Acrosome (Annelida, Oligochaeta)   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The later morphogenesis of the acrosome of Limnodriloides winckelmanni and Rhyacodrilus arthingtonae is compared with that in Enchytraeus and in earthworms. After superposition of the acrosome on the tip of the nucleus the manchette continues apically beyond the nucleus to ensheath the acrosomal tube. At the posterior limit of, and probably contained in, the spacious/ terminal primary acrosomal vesicle is an electron-dense ring. A domed protrusion into the floor of the primary vesicle is tentatively regarded as the secondary acrosome vesicle. The axial rod when first observed is attached to the vesicle complex. Later, the rod detaches and extends deeply into the acrosome tube. A membrane ensheathes the tubificid axial rod but its exact homology with the complex layers surrounding the lumbricid or megascolecid axial rod is not clear. The domed apical region of the tubificid acrosome is probably a persistence of the primary acrosome vesicle and it is deduced that the acrosome vesicle surrounding the axial rod in lumbricids and megascolecids is a product, by invagination, of the secondary acrosome vesicle only.  相似文献

A remarkable diversity of life history strategies, geographic distributions, and morphological characters provide a rich substrate for investigating the evolutionary relationships of arhynchobdellid leeches. The phylogenetic relationships, using parsimony analysis, of the order Arhynchobdellida were investigated using nuclear 18S and 28S rDNA, mitochondrial 12S rDNA, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence data, as well as 24 morphological characters. Thirty-nine arhynchobdellid species were selected to represent the seven currently recognized families. Sixteen rhynchobdellid leeches from the families Glossiphoniidae and Piscicolidae were included as outgroup taxa. Analysis of all available data resolved a single most-parsimonious tree. The cladogram conflicted with most of the traditional classification schemes of the Arhynchobdellida. Monophyly of the Erpobdelliformes and Hirudiniformes was supported, whereas the families Haemadipsidae, Haemopidae, and Hirudinidae, as well as the genera Hirudo or Aliolimnatis, were found not to be monophyletic. The results provide insight on the phylogenetic positions for the taxonomically problematic families Americobdellidae and Cylicobdellidae, the genera Semiscolex, Patagoniobdella, and Mesobdella, as well as genera traditionally classified under Hirudinidae. The evolution of dietary and habitat preferences is examined.  相似文献

A new species of the genus Stylodrilus is described from phreatic waters in California, North America. Tubular atria with bulbous penes and spermathecae with broad and short ducts characterize the new species. The habitat of Stylodrilus californianus n. sp., confirms that the distribution of the genus Stylodrilus in the Neartic biogeographical zone is mainly associated with subterranean waters.  相似文献

A small collection of Eudrilid earthworms from Nigeria is reported. Two species proved to be of special interest, the first, lagosensis Beddard, is usually placed in the genus Hyperio-drilus and the second is new to science. Their affinities and the uncertainties about the classification of the Eudrilidae are discussed. These problems led into a taximetric study of the family. It is concluded that on the basis of the accepted generic criteria, the subfamilies (Eudrilinae and Pareudrilinae) are phenetically valid and the Eudrilinae may be subdivided according to whether species have paired or single male and spermathecal pores. Further, the two species whose doubtful status prompted the investigation, may each be placed in a separate genus. The new species is accommodated in a new genus, described herein, while Heliodrilus Beddard is resurrected for lagosensis which is the type-species. Additionally, a new interpretation is provided of the structure and function of the posterior male organs of Hippopera nigeriae Taylor.  相似文献

The wall of the spermathecal ampulla in Tubifex tubifex consists of epithelial, muscular and peritoneal layers. The epithelial surface contains closely microvilli while lateral and basal plasma membranes are extensively convoluted. Epithelial cytoplasm exhibits a vertical zonation of subcellular components. The distal zone contains filiform secretory particles which are orientated perpendicular to the apical surface; extrusion occurs by their fusion with the plasma membrane between the bases of neighbouring microvilli. Mitochondiral and Golgi zones, the latter containing the nucleus, subtend the distal zone. The basal zone, composed of vertical compartments formed by the folded plasma membrane, is rich in α-glycogen rosettes. The distal epithelium and lumen material contain neutral mucopolysaccharides and carboxylated acid mucopolysaccharides in conjunction with neutral protein. The ultrastructure of the spermathecal duct wall is comparable with that of the ampulla but is characterized by extremely long microvilli and a prominent musculature.  相似文献
