Seasonal patterns of abundance of Sargassum johnstonii Setchell & Gardner, S. herporhizum Setchell & Gardner, and S. sinicola Setchell & Gardner var. camouii (Dawson) Norris & Yensen were observed in the northern Gulf of California where mean monthly sea temperatures range annually from < 14 °C to nearly 30 °C. The three species displayed peaks in size, canopy cover, and fertility in the spring, in between periods of seasonal temperature extremes. Larger plants were the first to develop reproductive structures, suggesting that a threshold in size must be reached before plants become fertile. Fertile receptacles were shed in summer. S. sinicola var. camouii retained a greater portion of its primary stipes during the summer dieback than the other two species and showed a second peak in fertility in fall. Whereas tropical Sargassum are most abundant in winter and temperate-zone Sargassum are most abundant in summer months, the Gulf of California species achieve maximum size and fertility in between seasons of extreme temperatures. A long-term decline in abundance of Sargassum was observed at the study site between 1977 and 1981, possibly due to the detrimental effects on Sargassum of anomalously warm sea temperatures in the Gulf of California in 1978 or to the subsequent effects of warm temperature on food webs in the region.  相似文献

Setchell & Gardner (1924) provided a taxonomic treatment for the genus Ceramium from lower California and the Gulf of California, Mexico, in which they described several new species, including C. sinicola S. & G. described from Ensenada, BCN and C. interruptum S. & G. described from the vicinity of La Paz, BCS. The latter was later reduced to variety rank in C. sinicolaby Dawson (1950), a taxonomic decision that has subsequently been widely adopted. Phylogenetic analyses inferred from three molecular markers (chloroplast‐encoded rbcL, the RUBISCO spacer, and nuclear encoded SSU rDNA) from recent collections from the Pacific North‐west (California, Oregon) and the Gulf of California reveal a well supported assemblage of three corticated taxa: C. codicolaJ. Ag. 1894, C. sinicola and C. sinicola var. interruptum. Sequence divergence values among the three taxa are sufficient to warrant separate species ranking; hence, we reinstate C. interruptum as a widely distributed epiphyte for the region. C. sinicolais more closely related to C. codicolathan to C. interruptum, with the former two restricted to the host Codium. The molecule‐based relationships are congruent with evolutionary trends in cortication pattern and attachment mode.  相似文献

Morphology of field material and life history in culture were studied in Scytosiphon canaliculatus (Setchell et Gardner) comb. nov. from northern Japan. Erect gametophytes of S. canaliculatus are cylindrical, tubular, up to 7 mm wide and 40 cm long, and without regular constrictions. S. canaliculatus has pronounced anisogamy and ascocysts accompanied with plurilocular gametangia. The life history of S. canaliculatus showed an alternation between erect gametophytes and crustose prostrate sporophytes bearing unilocular sporangia. Since field sporophytes of S. canaliculatus were found to be identical with Hapterophycus canaliculatus Setchell et Gardner (Ralfsiaceae, Phaeophyceae), it is proposed to transfer H. canaliculatus to the genus Scytosiphon. In the field, gametophytes with plurilocular gametangia appeared in spring and disappeared in summer. Sporophytes with unilocular sporangia were collected in late autumn and winter. Unilocular sporangia were produced at 15°C in short-day culture conditions and unispores developed into erect gametophytes at 5–15°C. It is suggested that the seasonal Occurrence of gametophytes in the field is due to the seasonal formation of unilocular sporangia, which is regulated by temperature and photoperiod.  相似文献

Silvetia compressa ( J. Agardh) Serrão et al. is a common member of the upper intertidal fucoid community on the Pacific coast of America from Humboldt County, California, to Punta Baja, Baja California, Mexico. A relatively narrow range of morphological variability is exhibited by most mainland populations, regardless of latitude, but some mainland populations and all insular populations participate in a complex pattern that we have attempted to analyze. A few populations on the Monterey Peninsula in which the fronds are atypically delicate were described by Setchell & Gardner as f. gracilis, to which was assigned a population from Santa Catalina Island. After comparing populations from various parts of the range of the species, including all of the Channel Islands, we conclude that two subspecies may be recognized. In subsp. compressa, which includes f. gracilis as a growth form and occurs chiefly on the mainland, the frond is robust with long tapered receptacles. In the variant subspecies, which is chiefly insular but also occurs on the coast of northern Baja California, the typical frond has slender axes as in f. gracilis, but is more densely branched and has short ellipsoidal receptacles. Comparison of nucleotide sequences from the ITS regions of rDNA revealed an identical pattern for subsp. compressa from Baja California and central California, including populations assignable to f. gracilis. By contrast, the pattern for the variant subspecies differed by 2 bp (0.3%) from that of subsp. compressa.  相似文献

A revision of several of the Myrionemataceae described by Setchell & Gardner in 1922 from the Pacific Coast of North America has been undertaken. Collections at different seasons, on different substrates, and comparisons with the types and isotype material, as well as culture studies, show that many of these species are merely different stages of a few algae. Twenty-seven species or forms have been grouped into 4 species and several changes of genus have been made. Life histories observed are simple, generally asexual except for Hecatonema streblonematoides, which shows a “Microsyphar”- like gametophyte.  相似文献

Cultured tetraspores of Petrocelis middendorffii (Ruprecht) Kjellman from Amchitka Island, Alaska, gave rise to foliose, dioecious gametophytes similar to cultured gametophytes of P. franciscana Setchell & Gardner. A 1:1 ratio male:female gametophytes was obtained. Fertilized female plants produced cystocarps and carpospores that gave rise to crustose plants anatomically similar to field-collected Petro-celis sporophytes. Cultured male gametophytes of P. middendorffii were interfertile with cultured female blades of field-collected Gigartina pacifica Kjellman. Cultured P. middendorffii gametophytes from Amchitka were interfertile with cultured gametophytes of P. franciscana from 2 localities in California. Hybrid carpospores gave rise to crustose sporophytes that have not reproduced. Anatomical comparisons of P. middendorffii from Amchitka with P. franciscana from California showed no important differences in the characters originally used to separate these species. The interfertility of cultured Petrocelis gametophytes from california and Amchitka as well as the similarities of the history and anatomy suggests that a single species is involved. P. franciscana is reduced to a synonym of P. middendorfii.  相似文献

Investigation on seasonal variation in size and chemical constituents of Sargassum sinicola Setchell et Gardner from Bahía de La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, was carried out from a control bed and compared with an experimental bed with artificial nutrients added. No significant differences were found between the control and experimental thalli for size or chemical composition, except for iodine and raw fiber. For control thalli the results were: size 7.5–56.0 cm, alginate yield 7.2–13.7%, viscosity 58.7–191.7 millipascal seconds (mPa s), mannitol 2.9–8.1%, raw fiber 5.5–7.5% and iodine 0.020–0.141%; while in the experimental thalli the size ranged from 7.5 to 80.3 cm and the alginate yield was 7.8–10.4%, viscosity 41.4–163.4 mPa s, mannitol 2.9–8.3%, raw fiber 5.9–10.7% and iodine 0.021–0.098%. These variations were related to its natural growth cycle, and showed reductions during the senescence period. Results suggest that S. sinicola is not affected by relatively low nutrient concentrations, and could be considered as raw material for alginate production.  相似文献

Nine species of small, filamentous green algae were identified from St. Lucia, in the Lesser Antilles. Observations were made on field-collected material and isolates obtained in unialgal culture. Acrochaete marchantiae (Setchell & Gardner) comb. nov. has been transferred from Pringsheimiella marchantae Setchell & Gardner. Trichothyra irregularis is described as a new genus and species, Blastophysa arrhiza Wille and B. polymorpha Kjellman are considered synonyms of B. rhizopus Reinke, and Phaeophila polymorpha Jao is considered synonym of P. dendroides (Crouan) Batters. These species were associated with a wide variety of substrate, including other algae, corals, rocks, and wood, with little apparent host specificity. All of the species recorded are new records for St. Lucia and five species are new records for the Caribbean.  相似文献

The Old World species of the genus Pouzolzia have been revised and 24 species and 13 infraspecific taxa recognised. Worldwide, the genus now totals 36 species and 17 infraspecific taxa. Pouzolzia sect. Memorialis Bennett & Brown (including the genera Gonostegia Turcz. and Hyrtanandra Miq.) is maintained here as a section of Pouzolzia. The characters used to separate Pouzolzia from Boehmeria are found to work worldwide. In the Old World, the genus ranges, west to east, from Senegal to Japan and the Solomon Islands, and, north to south, from China, the Himalayas and Yemen to South Africa, Madagascar, Australia and the Lord Howe, Norfolk and Kermadec Is. Some species are common and occur almost throughout tropical Indomalesia or are widespread in Africa; others are rare and with a narrow range, for example restricted to one or a few oceanic islands. Each of the taxa occurring in the Old World is described and illustrated, habitats and geographical ranges are indicated, conservation status is discussed on the basis of our impression of old and new collecting activity, and distributions are mapped. The following new taxa are described: P. tsaratananensis Friis & Wilmot Dear from Madagascar, P. herpetophyton Friis & Wilmot‐Dear from the Comoro Is., and P. zeylanica subsp. calcicola Friis & Wilmot‐Dear and P. thailandica Friis & Wilmot‐Dear, both from southern Thailand. A new name, P. variifolia Friis & Wilmot‐Dear, is proposed for P. heterophylla (Blume) Wedd., nom. illeg. The following new combinations are published here: P. australis (Endl.) Friis & Wilmot‐Dear, P. sanguinea (Blume) Merr. var. formosana (Li) Friis & Wilmot‐Dear, P. sanguinea (Blume) Merrill var. cinerascens (Blume) Friis & Wilmot‐Dear, P. mixta Solms var. shirensis (Rendle) Friis & Wilmot‐Dear, P. hirta (Blume) Hasskarl var. parvifolia (Wight) Friis & Wilmot‐Dear, P. pentandra (Roxb.) Benn. & R. Br. subsp. wightii (Benn. & R. Br.) Friis & Wilmot‐Dear. and subsp. wightii (Benn. & R. Br.) Friis & Wilmot‐Dear var. gracilis (Miq.) Friis & Wilmot‐Dear. The following taxa are reduced to synonymy for the first time: Pouzolzia argenteonitida W.‐T. Wang, P. bracteosa Friis, P. calophylla W.‐T. Wang & C.‐J. Phenotypic differences between the low wave exposure Mazzaella splendens (Setchell et Gardner) Hommersand and the high exposure Mazzaella linearis (Setchell et Gardner) Fredericq could be due to plasticity or genetic differentiation. Common gardens were used to assess their levels of plasticity after describing allometric relationships. As thalli lengthened, stipe development for M. splendens almost ceased even though blades continued to expand, but M. linearis formed a larger stipe before developing a blade that continued to stay narrow at longer thallus lengths. Common gardens demonstrated that M. splendens regrown in the site of M. linearis produced a wider blade than M. splendens regrown in its natural low energy site and that M. linearis regrown in low wave energy either could not form a wider blade or became narrower than thalli from its high energy site. Tetrasporophytes of M. splendens produced a longer and thicker stipe in the high energy site, but the larger M. linearis stipe was not realized because its wider blades made it vulnerable to hydrodynamic removal. Mazzaella splendens therefore had low survivorship in the high wave energy site, and survivors were not long enough to reproduce. Survivorship and reproduction of M. linearis was similar in both environments. Some of the M. splendens and M. linearis characters are plastic, but this plasticity was insufficient for convergence of phenotypes, and blade width plasticity was maladaptive at least for M. splendens. Developmental systems producing the stipe and blade phenotypes of each species have undergone genetic differentiation.  相似文献

The deep‐water macroalgal assemblage was described at 14 sites off the central California coast during 1999 and 2000 from SCUBA and remotely operated vehicle sampling. The stipitate kelp Pleurophycus gardneri Setchell & Gardner, previously thought to be rare in the region, was abundant from 30 to 45 m, forming kelp beds below the well‐known giant kelp forests. Macroalgae typically formed three broadly overlapping zones usually characterized by one or a few visually dominant taxa: 1) the upper “Pleurophycus zone” (30–45 m) of stipitate kelps and Desmarestia spp. with a high percent cover of corallines, low cover of uncalcified red algae, and rare green algae; 2) a middle “Maripelta zone” (40–55 m) with other uncalcified red algae and infrequent corallines and green algae; and 3) a zone (55–75 m) of infrequent patches of nongeniculate coralline algae. The green alga Palmophyllum umbracola Nelson & Ryan, not previously reported from the Northeast Pacific, was found over the entire geographical range sampled from 35 to 54 m. Year‐round profiles of water column irradiance revealed unexpectedly clear water with an average K0 of 0.106·m ? 1 Received 18 January 2002. Accepted 16 December 2002. . The low percent surface irradiance found at the average lower macroalgal depth limits in this study (0.56% for brown algae, 0.12% for uncalcified red algae, and 0.01% for nongeniculate coralline algae) and lack of large grazers suggest that light controls the lower distributional limits. The ubiquitous distribution, perennial nature, and similar lower depth limits of deep‐water macroalgal assemblages at all sites suggest that these assemblages are a common persistent part of the benthic biota in this region.  相似文献

Six isolates of mineral‐enveloped Strombidinopsis minima‐like species were collected from the coastal waters across several regions in Korea. Morphological observations and molecular analyses were performed. The ribosomal DNA sequences (including small subunit ribosomal DNA, internal transcriber spacer 1‐5.8S ribosomal DNA‐internal transcriber spacer 2; and part of large subunit ribosomal DNA) of these six isolates were compared. Their morphological characteristics were also compared with those of S. minima populations reported. The marked genetic differences (with a similarity range of 96.85–98.48%) in SSU rDNA among these S. minima‐like entities suggest the existence of multiple species. This finding is also supported by morphological variations detected in this study and reported in the literature (e.g. 15–32 collar membranelles in different populations). In addition, S. minima‐like species are clustered with S. batos and S. sinicum, and therefore, our SSU rDNA results support previous results suggesting that the genus Strombidinopsis is not monophyletic in origin. Further collection of morphological and molecular data may facilitate the determination of a new genus carrying mineral‐enveloped Strombidinopsis species.  相似文献

California Porcini: Three New Taxa, Observations on their Harvest, and the Tragedy of No Commons. Seven species of California porcini (Boletus, sect. Boletus) are recognized, including three new taxa that are culturally and economically significant: B. rex-veris sp. nov., B. regineus sp. nov., and B. edulis var. grandedulis var. nov. The three new taxa have been intensively gathered during the last century by Italian immigrants, and B. rex-veris sp. nov. more recently by southeast Asian immigrants as well as by long-time rural residents. B. rex-veris sp. nov. is restricted to inland mountains while the other two are widely distributed, and are abundant in California’s heavily populated coastal zone. In the 1990s, reflecting the preservationist policies of mainstream environmental organizations, many park authorities and land management agencies in coastal California closed public lands to mushroom gathering. Organized attempts to establish legal, limited gathering in a few parks were almost entirely unsuccessful. The result is that it is illegal to pick porcini on nearly all public lands over a 6,000-square-mile area, even though they grow prolifically in coastal California. Many of coastal California’s porcini are picked anyway by those willing to risk being apprehended and fined. In response to the official intolerance for mushroom gathering, an entire generation of mushroom hunters has grown up practicing the activity in secret.  相似文献

Extracts of 28 species of marine macroscopic algae collected from various coastal habitats of northern California were examined for antiviral activity against a broad spectrum of mammalian viruses. Ten members of Rhodophyta contained substance(s) which caused greater than a 2 log reduction in the infectivity of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. In addition, anti-Coxsackie Bs virus activity was detected in extracts of Constantinea simplex Setchell. The physical and chemical properties of the substance in extracts of Farlowia mollis (Harvey and Bailey) Farlow and Setchell and C. simplex indicated the active agent was a structural polysaccharide.  相似文献

Uncertainties about the identity of type specimens of red algae have frequently led to taxonomic and nomenclatural confusion. A procedure for extracting PCR-amplifiable DNA from formalin-fixed material and herbarium specimens was used to investigate the taxonomic status of several South African Gigartinaceae. We compared nucleotide sequences in the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region in type specimens and other historically important collections presently referred to Gigartina bracteata, G. radula and G. stiriata. The following opinions are supported: (1) Fucus bracteatus S.G. Gmelin, Chondrodictyon capense Kützing and Iridaea clathrata Decaisne represent a single species of South African Gigartina (G. bracteata (S.G. Gmelin) Setchell & Gardner) in which the disintegration of tetrasporangial sori results in a reticulate thallus. (2) Mastocarpus polycarpus Kützing, M. incrassatus Kützing and Iridaea lapathifolia Kützing represent a single species of South African Gigartina (G. polycarpa (Kützing) Setchell & Gardner) that has often, but erroneously, been called G. radula (Esper) J. Agardh. (3) Mastocarpus verrucosus Kützing is a later heterotypic synonym of Iridaea papillosa Bory (Sarcothalia papillosa (Bory) Leister) and was based on material that probably came from southern South America rather than from South Africa, the provenance given by Kützing. (4) Fucus stiriatus Turner and Sphaerococcus burmannii C. Agardh represent a single species of South African Sarcothalia (S. stiriata (Turner) Leister).  相似文献

Two new species of brown algae (Phaeophyceae), Padina moffittiana Abbott et Huisman, sp. nov. and Cutleria irregularis Abbott et Huisman, sp. nov., are described from the Hawaiian Islands (between 19°04′N, 155°35′W and 28°25′N, 178°20′W). In addition, the new combination Cutleria canariensis is proposed for Aglaozonia canariensis. New observations are presented on Nereia intricata Yamada, a species described 67 years ago and known only from its type specimen. New records of a further 14 species are given for the Hawaiian Islands. These 17 taxa bring the total number of species of brown algae recorded for the Hawaiian Islands to 55, an increase of 28%. Of the 15 new records, two are recent ‘accidental’ introductions: Dictyota flabellata (Collins) Setchell et Gardner and Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt from California. Six records are notable because of their great distances from previously known collections: Nereia intricata Yamada from the Ryukyu Is., Japan; Discosporangium mesarthrocarpum (Meneghini) Hauck, from the Adriatic, Mediterranean, warm Atlantic and southern Australia; Distromium flabellatum Womersley, Spatoglossum macrodontum J. Agardh, and Sporochnus moorei Harvey, from Australia; Desmarestia ligulata (Lightfoot) Lamouroux from temperate and colder waters in the Pacific and Atlantic. A comparison with some Japanese species of Padina confirms that Padina japonica Yamada should be subsumed with Padina sanctae‐crucis Børgesen, as proposed earlier.  相似文献

One new Bolivian species (Borreria pazensis) and three new varieties (Borreria densiflora var.minima, Richardia, scabra var.chacoensis andStaelia virgata var.killeenii) are described and illustrated. The genusDiodella, with three species (D. apiculata comb. nov., D. radula comb. nov., andD. teres), is reported for the first time.Borreria limae, B. wunschmannii, B. scabiosoides var.scabiosoides, andB. scabiosoides var.anderssonii are also reported as new to Bolivia.  相似文献

Sporophytes were produced in 22 out of 23 attempts to cross Macrocystia angustifolia Bory with Pelagophycus porra (Lemon) Setchell. Representative samples of these plants were raised in a surge-tank under greenhouse conditions to several meters in length. The plants resulting from this intergeneric cross were intermediate in morphology between the parental genera. The intermediate plants were similar to those found fry one of the authors (MN) in 1957, and by others since then, in California kelp beds where Macrocystis and Pelagophycus co-occur, A cross between M. angustifolia and Nereocystis luetkeana (Mertens) P. & R., also produced normal sporophytes. The taxonomic, evolutionary, morphogenetic and genetic implications of these hybridizations are discussed.  相似文献
