Xstir is a repetitive DNA sequence element that is extremely amplified as a common component of two different structures: a tandem repeat (Xstir array) and a MITE (miniature inverted-repeat transposable element) in the genome of Xenopus laevis. To elucidate the origin and evolutionary history of Xstir-related sequences, we investigated their species specificity among three Xenopus species (X. laevis, X. borealis, and X. tropicalis). Analyses by sequence alignment and digestion with restriction enzymes of genomic Xstir-related sequences revealed that the MITE (Xmix MITE) was well conserved among the three Xenopus species, with small lineage-specific differences. On the other hand, the tandem repeat element (tropXstir) in X. tropicalis was different from the Xstir that X. laevis and X. borealis have in common. Both sequences of Xstir and tropXstir were, however, different segments of the Xmix MITE. The results suggest that these tandem repeats were formed by partial tandem duplication of the MITE internal sequence in each lineage of X. tropicalis and of X. borealis/X. laevis after their branching. Representatives of the genus Camallanus Railliet & Henry, 1915 occur mainly in teleost fishes, although a significant number of species have also been recorded from anuran amphibians. The taxonomy, host range, geographical distribution and phylogenetic relationships of Camallanus spp. from African clawed toads (Xenopus spp.) are reviewed. Besides C. kaapstaadi Southwell & Kirshner, 1937, which shows a widespread distribution in sub-Saharan Africa and occurs in X. laevis subspecies, X. wittei, X. fraseri-like toads, X. borealis and X. muelleri, three new species were found: C. siluranae n. sp. from X. tropicalis in west Africa, C. macrocephalus n. sp. from X. borealis in Kenya, and C. xenopodis n. sp. from X. laevis laevis in South Africa and X. borealis in Kenya. C. johni Yeh, 1960 described from Xenopus sp. in Tanzania is considered a species inquirenda. C. kaapstaadi and C. macrocephalus are very closely related and both occur in the oesophagus of their hosts, unlike other Camallanus spp. which are found in the intestine or more rarely the stomach. Some of the unusual morphological features of these species may be an adaptation to attachment in the oesophagus. The host of C. siluranae, X. tropicalis, belongs to a separate species group (as has been established by recent molecular and cytological studies) to those of C. kaapstaadi, C. macrocephalus and C. xenopodis. Morphological affinities suggest that Camallanus spp. from clawed toads are not monophyletic with those from other amphibians and that C. siluranae is distantly related to, and probably not monophyletic with the remaining species from clawed toads. The Camallanus fauna of Xenopus spp. may thus be derived from at least two independent colonisations, of different host clades, by parasite lineages occurring in teleost fishes.  相似文献

Ambient temperature fluctuations are detected via the thermosensory system which allows animals to seek preferable thermal conditions or escape from harmful temperatures. Evolutionary changes in thermal perception have thus potentially played crucial roles in niche selection. The genus Xenopus (clawed frog) is suitable for investigating the relationship between thermal perception and niche selection due to their diverse latitudinal and altitudinal distributions. Here we performed comparative analyses of the neuronal heat sensors TRPV1 and TRPA1 among closely related Xenopus species (X. borealis, X. muelleri, X. laevis, and X. tropicalis) to elucidate their functional evolution and to assess whether their functional differences correlate with thermal niche selection among the species. Comparison of TRPV1 among four extant Xenopus species and reconstruction of the ancestral TRPV1 revealed that TRPV1 responses to repeated heat stimulation were specifically altered in the lineage leading to X. tropicalis which inhabits warmer niches. Moreover, the thermal sensitivity of TRPA1 was lower in X. tropicalis than the other species, although the thermal sensitivity of TRPV1 and TRPA1 was not always lower in species that inhabit warmer niches than the species inhabit cooler niches. However, a clear correlation was found in species differences in TRPA1 activity. Heat‐evoked activity of TRPA1 in X. borealis and X. laevis, which are adapted to cooler niches, was significantly higher than in X. tropicalis and X. muelleri which are adapted to warmer niches. These findings suggest that the functional properties of heat sensors changed during Xenopus evolution, potentially altering the preferred temperature ranges among species.  相似文献

Invasive, non-native, white grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) cause significant damage in urban landscapes. Although the lack of natural enemies in their new home is often suggested as an important factor in the establishment and spread of invasive species, the potential of incumbent generalist parasites and pathogens to delay their establishment and spread has not been explored. We compared the susceptibility of the introduced Popillia japonica and the native Cyclocephala borealis to 16 species and strains of entomopathogenic nematodes isolated from within or outside the geographic ranges of the two scarabs. We found large variation in the virulence of the species/strains of nematodes with over 50% mortality of P. japonica produced by Heterorhabditis zealandica strain X1 and H. bacteriophora strain GPS11 and of C. borealis by H. zealandica and H. bacteriophora strains KMD10 and NC1. Heterorhabditis indica and H. marelatus caused less than 20% mortality of both scarab species. When considered as a group the nematode species and strains from within and outside the geographic ranges of either P. japonica or C. borealis did not differ in virulence towards either scarab species. Dose response studies with selected nematode species and strains against P. japonica and two additional non-native species Anomala (Exomala) orientalis and Rhizotrogus majalis and the native C. borealis indicated that R. majalis was the least susceptible and P. japonica and A. orientalis were as susceptible as the native C. borealis. Heterorhabditis zealandica was significantly more virulent than any other species or strain against P. japonica with a LC50 of 272 IJs/grub. The LC30 and LC50 values for H. zealandica were also the lowest among the four nematode species/strains tested against A. orientalis and C. borealis. The LC50 values for H. zealandica and H. megidis (UK strain) were significantly lower for the native C. borealis than the introduced A. orientalis. H. zealandica also showed the highest penetration efficiency and the lowest encapsulation in P. japonica and C. borealis grubs. Results suggest that the introduction of the exotic H. zealandica into the front-line states with respect to the movement of P. japonica and A. orientalis should be explored as a tactic to delay their establishment and spread. The results also suggest that the manipulation of the indigenous H. bacteriophora populations may help in delaying spread and mitigating losses caused by the invasive grub species.  相似文献

The histone patterns in Xenopus laevis and X. borealis have been examined at various developmental stages using acid-urea polyacrylamide electrophoresis. Qualitative differences between the two species have been demonstrated in the H1 fraction. These differences are not affected by alkaline phosphatase digestion. Quantitative changes during development in both H1 and H4 fractions have also been observed. In addition, histones from hybrids of the two species have been examined. H1 histones characteristic of both species are present by the neurula stage in laevis ♀ × borealis ♂ hybrids. Quantitative changes observed in borealis development are mimicked in laevis ♀ × borealis ♂ hybrid development.  相似文献

Competitive interactions between Tetranychus urticae and Eotetranychus carpini borealis were investigated under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. When placed first to colonize red raspberry leaves, T. urticae caused extinction of E. carpini borealis populations. E. carpini borealis had detrimental effects on T. urticae but did not cause T. urticae population extinction. The area used by E. carpini borealis for egg deposition decreased with an increase in the number of T. urticae eggs. Red raspberry showed an induced response to T. urticae and E. carpini borealis feeding after two weeks of infestation. Population growth of each species was reduced on plants that were previously infested by conspecifics but inducible response by one species had no effects on the other species.  相似文献

Abstract Liverwort Pellia borealis is an allopolyploid species that originated after the hybridization and chromosome doubling of two cryptic species; Pellia epiphylla species N and Pellia epiphylla species S. A sequence comparison of chloroplast tRNAUCCGly, tRNAUUULys gene introns, the mitochondrial tRNAGCUSer gene intron, and the first intron of the coxIII gene in the case of three liverwort species studied revealed that the chloroplast and mitochondrial sequences are identical in P. borealis and P. epiphylla species N but different from homologous P. epiphylla species S sequences. Both mitochondria and chloroplasts of P. borealis were thus inherited from one parent—P. epiphylla species N. Studies on 14 different populations of P. borealis gave the same result. These are the first data on organellar transmission in liverworts, the earliest land plants. Moreover, we show that the intron sequences of some organellar genes, until now not used in any systematic studies, could be very good markers in studying taxonomic relationships in closely related species and reconstructing historical events.  相似文献

Surveys of genetic diversity patterns of self‐incompatible clonal polyploid plant species are still scarcer than those of diploid plant species. Therefore, I studied the phylogeographical history of Linnaea borealis subsp. borealis to shed light on the colonization history of this clonal self‐incompatible polyploid plant in Eurasia using selected regions of plastid DNA and genetic diversity patterns of 22 populations of this species employing AFLP markers. I also addressed the question of whether the genetic diversity patterns in L. borealis subsp. borealis in Eurasia are similar to those of earlier published studies of clonal self‐incompatible diploid or polyploid plants. This survey revealed that the shallow phylogeographical history (six plastid haplotypes forming one haplogroup, 100% bootstrap support) and moderate genome‐wide diversity estimated using AFLP markers (Fragpoly = 10.8–38.9%, I = 0.060–0.180, FST = 0.289) were general characteristics of L. borealis subsp. borealis in its Eurasian range. The sampling strategy, in most cases at 1–2‐m or even 3–5‐m intervals, showed that a balance between vegetative and sexual reproduction and limited pollen dispersal among compatible mates can be important for genetic diversity patterns in populations of this taxon. Despite the fact that one‐half of the investigated populations were strongly isolated, they still preserved similar levels of genetic diversity across the geographical range.   • 1 Foraging patterns of the squash beetle, Epilachna borealis Fabricius (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), in field cages are not consistent with the hypothesis that this beetle avoids leaves in which its feeding damage has caused the induction of cucurbitacins.
  • 2 E.borealis feeding does not induce accumulation of cucurbitacins inside or outside of feeding trenches.
  • 3 Cucurbitacins do not reduce the survival or growth rate of E. borealis larvae.

Sponges are the dominant invertebrates in many Antarctic communities, where they play a decisive structural function thanks to their abundance and large sizes. However, current knowledge on Antarctic sponges remains poor even with respect to basic aspects such as taxonomy. Here, we report on an Antarctic species of the genus Stylocordyla, which has been recorded for a long time under the name of the boreal S. borealis due to spicule and growth habit similarities. A thorough study of dense populations of the only Stylocordyla species known up to now from the eastern zone of the Weddell Sea as well as the re-examination of several specimens (including the type material) of S. borealis has allowed us to assess the variability of the boreal species and to confirm that the austral species is not S. borealis (Lovén, 1868) but a new species of Stylocordyla, different from the other congeners recorded from southern latitudes. The new species S. chupachups commonly dwells on horizontal or slighted sloped hard bottoms of the continental shelf of Weddell Sea, from 100 m to below 400 m depth, although the densest populations usually occur between 150 and 300 m. It is a pioneer species in areas that have been scoured by icebergs, and thus its presence may be considered an indicator of recent colonisation.  相似文献

The Synura petersenii species complex represents a common, cosmopolitan and highly diverse taxon of autotrophic freshwater flagellates. In this paper, we describe and characterize four new species (S. borealis, S. heteropora, S. hibernica and S. laticarina) that have been identified during our extensive sampling of freshwater habitats in 15 European countries. Morphometric analyses of siliceous scales led to the significant phenotypic differentiation of all four newly described species, and their separation from other related species of the S. petersenii complex. Two of these newly described species (S. hibernica and S. borealis) can be clearly distinguished by characteristic large colonies consisting of elongated, lanceolate-shaped cells. Development of strongly elongated, narrow cells in S. hibernica could be explained by the adaptation of this species to oligotrophic conditions. Though morphologically distinct, S. borealis possesses an exceptionally high degree of genetic diversity, possibly indicating recent speciation and evolutionary diversification within this taxon. Three of the four newly described species exhibit restricted biogeographic distribution. The evolutionarily related S. borealis and S. laticarina occur only in Northern Europe, and seem to be adapted to colder areas. The most remarkable distribution pattern was observed for S. hibernica, which has a geographic distribution that is restricted to western Ireland.  相似文献

Summary Globin mRNAs ofXenopus borealis andXenopus tropicalis have been cloned and sequenced. The nucleotide and derived amino acid sequences were compared with each other and with already available data fromXenopus laevis. This analysis rendered clear evidence that the common ancestor ofX. laevis andX. borealis, but not ofX. tropicalis, had lost one amino acid of the -globins prior to a genome duplication event that preceded the segregation of the former two species. Replacement-site substitutions were used to calculate a rough time scale of genome duplication and species segregation. The results suggest an ancient separation between theX. laevis and theX. tropicalis groups occurring approximately 110–120 million years ago. Analysis of the amino acid chains demonstrated various alterations. However, some functional domains, like heme-binding sites and12 contact sites, were subject to a high degree of conservation, indicating the existence of functional constraints on them also in the genusXenopus.  相似文献

‘Beauty bush’ and ‘twin flower’ are common names attributed to two well‐recognizable species belonging to the genus Linnaea (16 spp.) – L. amabilis and L. borealis – long admired by botanists and gardeners for their perfumed paired bell‐shaped flowers. In the present study, we investigated their floral scent compositions through gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) analysis of dynamic headspace samples. Because the flowers of L. borealis in wild populations are fragrant both during the day and in the evening, circadian variation of scent emission was also assessed for this species. In total, 26 chemical compounds comprise the floral scent bouquets of L. amabilis and L. borealis, identified as monoterpenes (14), benzenoids and phenylpropanoids (5), aliphatics (3), sesquiterpenes (3) and irregular terpenes (1). Whereas monoterpenes, notably (‐)‐α‐ and β‐pinene, dominated the scent of L. amabilis (over 82% relative abundance), benzene derivates: 1,4 dimethoxybenzene, anisaldehyde, 2‐phenylethanol, benzaldehyde and nicotinaldehyde were exclusive to analysed headspace samples of L. borealis, accounting for 52% to 100% of their relative compositions, in three Swedish populations. A southwestern Finnish population was characterized by the four first mentioned benzenoid compounds and large amounts of (‐)‐α‐ and β‐pinenes plus two aliphatic substances. The scent compounds identified for both species are ubiquitous and may serve as generalist attractants/stimulants for a broad assortment of anthophilous insects. The basic work on the flower scent of L. amabilis and L. borealis should inspire studies of their pollination biology, primarily the behaviour‐guiding roles of the characteristic emitted volatiles.  相似文献

Summary We have sequenced the coding and leader regions, as well as part of the 3 untranslated region, of aXenopus borealis type 1 cytoskeletal actin gene [defined according to the arrangement of acidic residues at the N-terminus; Vandekerckhove et al. (1981) J Mol Biol 152:413–426]. The encoded amino acid sequence is the same as the avian and mammalian (type 1) cytoskeletal actins, except for an isoleucine at position 10 (as found in the mammalian cytoskeletal actins), and an extra amino acid, alanine, after the N-terminal methionine. Five introns were found, in the same positions as those of the rat and chicken -actin genes. The 5 and 3 untranslated regions resemble those of the human (type 8) cytoskeletal actin gene more closely than the mammalian genes.Primer extension showed that this type 1 gene is transcribed in ovary and tadpole. Sequencing of primer extension products demonstrated two additional mRNA species inX. borealis, encoding type 7 and 8 isoforms. This contrasts with the closely related speciesXenopus laevis, where type 4, 5, and 8 isoforms have been found. The type 7 isoform has not previously been found in any other species. The mRNAs of theX. borealis type 1 and 8 andX. laevis type 5 and 8 isoforms contain highly homologous leaders. TheX. borealis type 7 mRNA has no leader homology with the other mRNA species and, unlike them, has no extra N-terminal alanine codon.   • The reproductive characteristics of understory bamboo and the effects of dieback on overstory tree seedlings through temporal changes in the environment at the forest floor have only been examined in a few bamboo species, due to the unpredictable occurrence of flowering events and long intervals between them but provide valuable information on tree regeneration and succession in a forest with dense dwarf bamboo cover.
  • We investigated environmental conditions and assessed seedlings (< 30-cm tall) of the dwarf bamboo Sasa borealis and overstory tree species at 44–50 measurement points during 2016–2021, which included a S. borealis mass flowering event in 2017. We also conducted seed germination tests to determine germination rates and patterns in S. borealis. Environmental factors affecting seedling recruitment of S. borealis and of overstory trees were analysed using spatiotemporal generalized linear mixed models in the Bayesian framework.
  • We observed gradual temporal changes in the environment, including increasing canopy openness and decreasing maximum height of dead S. borealis culms. The seeds germinated slowly and the emergence of current-year S. borealis seedlings peaked in spring–summer in 2019. The tree seedling density after 2019 increased significantly compared to that before the dieback. The model results suggest that tree seedling establishment was enhanced by increased light availability.
  • Continuous field observation beginning before S. borealis dieback revealed gradually enhanced tree recruitment in response to slow decay of the remaining dead culms and slow recovery of S. borealis. The seedling regeneration pattern of understory bamboo partly contributes to a prolonged opportunity for overstory tree regeneration.

The newly synthesized abundant proteins of early Xenopus laevis and Xenopus borealis embryos have been examined by two-dimensional electrophoresis after labelling with [35S]methionine. Six prominent polypeptides specific to Xenopus laevis embryos and a further six specific to Xenopus borealis have been identified. Overall, embryos of the two species are estimated to differ by approx. 15% in their protein synthetic patterns from blastula to tailbud stage. Interspecific hybrid embryos (Xenopus laevis (♀)/Xenopus borealis (♂)) synthesise only the maternally specified set of proteins until gastrulation after which they produce the full complement of both Xenopus laevis and Xenopus borealis specific proteins. The possible use of such molecular markers of parental genome activity in facilitating further embryological study is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Field experiments were conducted to assess the effects of different population densities of the herbivorous caddisfly Helicopsyche borealis on periphyton biomass and on its own growth rate in Big Sulphur Creek, a third-order stream in northern California, USA. Stream enclosures were used to vary grazer density from one-eighth to twice natural density (1/8X–2X) in two experiments (35 d and 60 d), which spanned the period of most rapid larval growth. Periphyton biomass and chlorophyll a were inversely related to grazer density. Grazer densities of 1/8X–1/2X moderately reduced periphyton when compared to an ungrazed control, whereas densities of 1X–2X greatly depleted periphyton. The growth rate of H. borealis larvae declined with increasing larval density. Growth rate was highest at densities of 1/8X–1/2X; larvae grew more slowly at 1X and showed no growth at 2X. Weekly supplementation of periphyton to 1/4X, 1X, and 2X densities significantly increased the final body mass of larvae at 1X and 2X (by 26% and 50%, respectively, compared to unsupplemented larvae) but did not change the body mass of larvae at 1/4X. These results suggest that periphyton is a limiting resource in Big Sulphur Creek and that H. borealis larvae compete exploitatively for that resource. Intraspecific competition may be an important, but often overlooked, feature of many herbivore populations in streams.  相似文献

Two species of ophiuroids (Ophiopleura borealis and Ophiacanthabidentata) and bivalves (Astarte crenata and Arctinulagroenlandica) were collected within and adjacent to the Northeast Water Polynya off the northeast coast of Greenland, and analyzed for total moisture, protein, lipid, and ash content. Body composition varied significantly among stations within species. Lipid and protein contents of Astarte crenata were higher in clams collected from the eastern Westwind Trough stations compared to those collected from the western Westwind Trough stations. However, the mean lipid and protein contents were significantly higher in Ophiopleura borealis sampled from the western Westwind Trough compared to the eastern Westwind Trough. Ophiopleura borealis are mobile deposit feeders and scavengers and may not be as directly dependent on sedimentary biogenic material as Astarte crenata and Ophiacanthabidentata. Samples of both Ophiopleura borealis and Ophiacantha bidentata from the Belgica Trough had lower protein and lipid contents compared to those sampled in the western Westwind Trough. Samples of Arctinula groenlandica from two locations on the Ob Bank had significantly different protein levels from each other. These data support previous work, indicating that biogenic materials resulting from primary production in the ice-free western area of the Northeast Water Polynya are advected eastward down the western Westwind Trough and that the Belgica Trough has lower organic input compared to the Westwind Trough.
