Mulberry leaves are the sole source of food for silkworms (Bombyx mori), and moisture content of the detached leaves fed to silkworms determines silkworm growth and cocoon yield. Since leaf dehydration in commercial sericulture is a serious problem, development of new methods that minimize post-harvest water loss are greatly needed. In the present study, variability in moisture retention capacity (MRC, measured as leaf relative water content after one to 5 h of air-drying) was examined by screening 290 diverse mulberry accessions and the relationship between MRC and leaf surface (cuticular) wax amount was determined. Leaf MRC varied significantly among accessions, and was found to correlate strongly with leaf wax amount. Scanning electron microscopic analysis indicated that leaves having crystalline surface waxes of increased facet size and density were associated with high MRC accessions. Leaf MRC at 5 h after harvest was not related to other parameters such as specific leaf weight, and stomatal frequency and index. This study suggests that mulberry accessions having elevated leaf surface wax amount and crystal size and density exhibit reduced leaf post-harvest water loss, and could provide the foundation for selective breeding of improved cultivars. 相似文献

Respiratory water loss (RWL) in insects showing continuous emission of CO(2) is poorly studied because few methodologies can measure it. Comparisons of RWL between insects showing continuous and discontinuous gas exchange cycles (DGC) are therefore difficult. We used two recently developed methodologies (the hyperoxic switch and correlation between water-loss and CO(2) emission rates) to compare cuticular permeabilities and rates of RWL in five species of ants, the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) and four common native ant competitors. Our results showed that RWL in groups of ants with moderate levels of activity and continuous gas exchange were similar across the two measurement methods, and were similar to published values on insects showing the DGC. Furthermore, ants exposed to anoxia increased their total water loss rates by 50-150%. These results suggest that spiracular control under continuous gas exchange can be as effective as the DGC in reducing RWL. Finally, the mesic-adapted Argentine ant showed significantly higher rates of water loss and cuticular permeability compared to four ant species native to dry environments. Physiological limitations may therefore be responsible for restricting the distribution of this invasive species in seasonally dry environments. 相似文献

Early season cuticular conductance and gas exchange in two oaks near the western edge of their range
Seasonal changes in minimum leaf conductance to water vapor (gmin), an estimate of cuticular conductance, and photosynthetic gas exchange in two co-occurring oak species in north-east Kansas (USA) were examined to determine if leaf gas exchange characteristics correlated with differences in tree distribution. Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa Michx.) is more abundant in mesic gallery forest sites, whereas chinquapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii Englm.) is more abundant in xeric sites. Early, during leaf expansion, gmin was significantly lower in chinquapin oak than in bur oak, though midday water potentials were similar. After leaves had fully expanded, gmin decreased to seasonal minimum values of 4.57 (±0.274) mmol m-2 s-1 in bur oak, and 2.66 (±0.156) mmol m-2 s-1 in chinquapin oak. Water potentials at these times were significantly higher in chinquapin oak. As leaves were expanding, photosynthesis (Anet) was significantly higher in chinquapin oak than in bur oak. Later in the growing season, Anet and gleaf increased dramatically in both species, and were significantly higher in bur oak relative to chinquapin oak. We concluded that bur and chinquapin oak have a number of leaf gas exchange characteristics that minimize seasonal water loss. These characteristics are distinct from trees from more mesic sites, and are consistent with the distribution patterns of these trees in tall-grass prairie gallery forests. 相似文献

To determine whether there is a correlation between the amount of lipids on the surface of ticks and their permeability to water, we quantified cuticular surface wax and measured water-loss rates in the ixodid tick Amblyomma americanum from nonfed nymph to egg-laying female. Ticks deposited no extra cuticular lipids during feeding, permitting maximum transpiratory water loss that presumably helps to concentrate the bloodmeal; and ticks deposited additional cuticular wax after apolysis that reduced integumental water loss, which likely prepares ticks for off-host existence. A remarkable three-fold boost in surface wax deposition and extreme water retention were noted after host drop-off following feeding. This wax is likely host-derived. Fed nymphs could discriminate between low and high relative humidity, enabling pharate adults to conserve lipid that would otherwise be lost with the exuvia and feces. This conservation strategy likely adds to the lipid pool needed by the tick to survive in a dry environment and complements the tick's behavioral abilities for seeking out optimum conditions for water conservation and host location. 相似文献

Biosynthesis and secretion of plant cuticular wax 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The cuticle covers the aerial portions of land plants. It consists of amorphous intracuticular wax embedded in cutin polymer, and epicuticular wax crystalloids that coat the outer plant surface and impart a whitish appearance. Cuticular wax is mainly composed of long-chain aliphatic compounds derived from very long chain fatty acids. Wax biosynthesis begins with fatty acid synthesis in the plastid. Here we focus on fatty acid elongation (FAE) to very long chains (C24-C34), and the subsequent processing of these elongated products into alkanes, secondary alcohols, ketones, primary alcohols and wax esters. The identity of the gene products involved in these processes is starting to emerge. Other areas of this field remain enigmatic. For example, it is not known how the hydrophobic wax components are moved intracellularly, how they are exported out of the cell, or translocated through the hydrophilic cell wall. Two hypotheses are presented for intracellular wax transport: direct transfer of lipids from the endoplasmic reticulum to the plasma membrane, and Golgi mediated exocytosis. The potential roles of ABC transporters and non-specific lipid transfer proteins in wax export are also discussed. Biochemical-genetic and genomic approaches in Arabidopsis thaliana promise to be particularly useful in identifying and characterizing gene products involved in wax biosynthesis, secretion and function. The current review will, therefore, focus on Arabidopsis as a model for studying these processes. 相似文献

The carbon isotope signature (δ13C) of foliar cellulose from sunlit tops of trees typically becomes enriched as trees of the same species in similar environments
grow taller, indicative of size-related changes in leaf gas exchange. However, direct measurements of gas exchange in common
environmental conditions do not always reveal size-related differences, even when there is a distinct size-related trend in
δ13C of the very foliage used for the gas exchange measurements. Since δ13C of foliage predominately reflects gas exchange during spring when carbon is incorporated into leaf cellulose, this implies
that gas exchange differences in different-sized trees are most likely to occur in favorable environmental conditions during
spring. If gas exchange differs with tree size during wet but not dry conditions, then this further implies that environmental
sensitivity of leaf gas exchange varies as a function of tree size. These implications are consistent with theoretical relationships
among height, hydraulic conductance and gas exchange. We investigated the environmental sensitivity of gas exchange in different-sized
Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) via a detailed process model that specifically incorporates size-related hydraulic conductance [soil–plant–atmosphere (SPA)], and empirical measurements from both wet and dry periods. SPA predicted, and the empirical measurements verified, that differences in gas exchange associated with tree size are greatest
in wet and mild environmental conditions and minimal during drought. The results support the hypothesis that annual net carbon
assimilation and transpiration of trees are limited by hydraulic capacity as tree size increases, even though at particular
points in time there may be no difference in gas exchange between different-sized trees. Maximum net ecosystem exchange occurs
in spring in Pacific Northwest forests; therefore, the presence of hydraulic limitations during this period may play a large
role in carbon uptake differences with stand-age. The results also imply that the impacts of climate change on the growth
and physiology of forest trees will vary depending on the age and size of the forest. 相似文献

Water relations and gas exchange were studied in the crowns of small European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) trees with respect to branch position. The upper-crown branches showed significantly higher branch sap flux rate (F
la) and branch conductance (g
b) compared to the lower crown (P<0.001). Values of leaf conductance (g
l), transpiration rate (E) and net photosynthesis (A), averaged for different ranges of atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD), were also higher in the upper crown position. We suppose that the up to 2.6-fold smaller soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance observed in the lower branches (P<0.001, compared to upper branches) could contribute to the decreased values of F
la, g
b, g
l, and E in the lower crown position. Variation in tracheid lumen diameter with respect to crown position (P<0.001) supported the hypothesis that branches growing at the crown base are hydraulically more constrained than branches located at the top of the tree. Leaf area to sapwood area ratio (A
la/A
sa) exhibited 1.4 times smaller values in lower crown (P<0.01), however, this could not compensate the effect of decreased hydraulic conductivity of the lower-crown branches. 相似文献

Summary The evaporation of water through a plastic membrane coated with plant was (30–70 g cm2) from grape berries or fractions thereof was determined. The hydrocarbon, alcohol and aldehyde fractions caused the highest reduction of evaporation. Their effect was identical to the complete wax or to mineral paraffin wax. The main constituent of the grape cuticle wax, the triterpene oleanolic acid, had no effect on evaporation in the artificial system. Free docosanoic acid did not suppress evaporation whereas the mixture of free fatty acids (the main constituents are the C24 and C26 acids) from grape wax reduced evaporation slightly. The results from this artificial system suggest that the alcohol, hydrocarbon and aldehyde fractions are the active components of the grape cuticle which prevent water loss. 相似文献

4, 8, 13-Duvatriene-1, 3-diol diastereoisomers have been identified in the cuticular wax of fresh Burley tobacco leaves. Their structures were determined by gas-liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Butylboronic acid derivatives of the alpha, beta-isomers were separated by gas-liquid chromatography and identified by mass spectrometry. The quantitative determination by gas-liquid chromatography revealed that the duvatrienediols are major components in the cuticular wax of Nicotiana tabacum. The duvatrienediol content in young leaves is higher than in old leaves, and in young leaves this compound may account for half of the cuticular wax. 相似文献

The Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) winter range utilization and the effects of foraging on mulberry trees (Morus bombycis) were studied in the Shimokita Peninsula during four winter seasons. The monkeys ate mainly winter dormancy buds when they
visited the mulberry tree clumps for the first time within the winter, but they ate mainly bark when they visited for the
second or third times. In the areas utilized by the monkeys over the recent three years, the mulberry trees compensated for
the decrease in their number of shoots by producing longer shoots with more buds against the monkey foraging. In the areas
used every year for more than four years, however, the mulberry trees were unable to compensate for the foraging pressure.
Thus, although the monkeys had apparently operated prudent herbivory within three years, they did not do so on a longer time-scale.
They shifted their utilization ranges after having over-exploited the mulberry trees. 相似文献

Nitrogen nutrition and water stress effects on leaf photosynthetic gas exchange and water use efficiency in winter wheat 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The responses of gas exchange and water use efficiency to nitrogen nutrition for winter wheat were investigated under well-watered and drought conditions. The photosynthetic gas exchange parameters of winter wheat are remarkably improved by water and nitrogen nutrition and the regulative capability of nitrogen nutrition is influenced by water status. The effects of nitrogen nutrition on photosynthetic characteristics and on the limited factors to photosynthesis are not identical under different water status. Intrinsic water use efficiency (WUE(i)) of the plants at the high-N nutrition was decreased by a larger value than that of the plants in the low-N treatment due to a larger decrease in photosynthetic rate than in transpiration rate. Carbon isotope composition of plant material (delta(p)) is increased by the increase of drought intensity. The delta(p) at a given level of C(i)/C(a) is reduced by nitrogen deficiency. Leaf carbon isotope discrimination (Delta) is increased by the increase of nitrogen nutrition and decreased by the increase of drought intensity. Transpirational water use efficiency (WUE(t)) is negatively correlated with Delta in both nitrogen supply treatments and increased with the nitrogen supply. 相似文献

Transport properties of cuticular waxes from 40 different plant species were investigated by measuring desorption rates of 14C-labelled octadecanoic acid from isolated and subsequently reconstituted wax. Diffusion coefficients (D) of octadecanoic acid in reconstituted waxes, calculated from the slopes of the regression lines fitted to the linearized portions of desorption kinetics, ranged from 1.2 × 10?19 m2 s?1 (Senecio kleinia leaf) to 2.9 × 10?17 m2 s?1 (Malus cf. domestica fruit). Cuticular water permeabilities (cuticular transpiration) measured with intact cuticular membranes isolated from 24 different species varied from 1.7 × 10?11 m s?1 (Vanilla planifolia leaf) up to 2.1 × 10?9 m s?1 (Malus cf. domestica fruit), thus covering a range of more than 2 orders of magnitude. Cuticular water permeabilities were highly correlated with diffusion coefficients of octadecanoic acid in isolated cuticular wax of the same species. It is therefore possible to estimate cuticular barrier properties of stomatous leaf surfaces or of leaves where isolation of the cuticle is impossible by measuring D of octadecanoic acid in isolated waxes of these leaves. 相似文献

The effects and interaction of drought and UV-B radiation were studied in sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L. var. Catissol-01), growing in a greenhouse under natural photoperiod conditions. The plants received approximately 1.7 W m(-2) (controls) or 8.6 W m(-2) (+UV-B) of UV-B radiation for 7 h per day. The UV-B and water stress treatments started 18 days after sowing. After a period of 12 days of stress, half of the water-stressed plants (including both UV-B irradiated or non-irradiated) were rehydrated. Both drought and UV-B radiation treatments resulted in lower shoot dry matter per plant, but there was no significant interaction between the two treatments. Water stress and UV-B radiation reduced photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration. However, the amplitude of the effects of both stressors was dependent on the interactions. This resulted in alleviation of the negative effect of drought on photosynthesis and transpiration by UV-B radiation as the water stress intensified. Intercelluar CO(2) concentration was initially reduced in all treatments compared to control plants but it increased with time. Photosynthetic pigments were not affected by UV-B radiation. Water stress reduced photosynthetic pigments only under high UV-B radiation. The decrease was more accentuated for chlorophyll a than for chlorophyll b. As a measure for the maximum efficiency of photosystem II in darkness F (v)/F (m) was used, which was not affected by drought stress but initially reduced by UV-B radiation. Independent of water supply, UV-B radiation increased the activity of pirogalol peroxidase and did not increase the level of malondialdehyde. On the other hand, water stress did not alter the activity of pirogalol peroxidase and caused membrane damage as assessed by lipid peroxidation. The application of UV-B radiation together with drought seemed to have a protective effect by lowering the intensity of lipid peroxidation caused by water stress. The content of proline was not affected by UV-B radiation but was increased by water stress under both low and high UV-B radiation. After 24 h of rehydration, most of the parameters analyzed recovered to the same level as the unstressed plants. 相似文献

In the order Collembola a clear relationship was found between overall cuticular water loss and water conditions of the habitat. The different transpiration rates were negatively correlated with the haemolymph osmotic pressure, but there was no clear causal relationship. In two species, Orchesella cincta and Tomocerus minor, which live sympatric but have a different micro-distribution (partly due to small scale heterogeneity in water conditions), important differences exist both in rate of water loss and in speed of water uptake: Orchesella cincta had a significantly lower transpiration and a higher speed of water uptake than Tomocerus minor. The transpiration rates of both species were linearly related to the vapour pressure deficit of the ambient air. Contrary to Orchesella cincta, Tomocerus minor lost water in saturated conditions. Freshly-killed Orchesella cincta had a higher transpiration rate than living individuals, but in Tomocerus minor there was no such difference. It is suggested that the main integumentary resistance against water loss in Orchesella cincta is the epidermal cell and in Tomocerus minor the epicuticle. The important rôle of the ventral vesicles in the water relations of Collembola was confirmed. 相似文献

Insects are at high risk of desiccation because of their small size, high surface-area-to-volume ratio, and air-filled tracheal system that ramifies throughout their bodies to transport O(2) and CO(2) to and from respiring cells. Although the tracheal system offers a high-conductance pathway for the movement of respiratory gases, it has the unintended consequence of allowing respiratory transpiration to the atmosphere. When resting, many species exchange respiratory gases discontinuously, and an early hypothesis for the origin of these discontinuous gas exchange cycles (DGCs) is that they serve to reduce respiratory water loss. In this study, we test this "hygric" hypothesis by comparing rates of CO(2) exchange and water loss among flower beetles Protaetia cretica (Cetoniinae, Scarabaeidae) breathing either continuously or discontinuously. We show that, consistent with the expectations of the hygric hypothesis, rates of total water loss are higher during continuous gas exchange than during discontinuous gas exchange and that the ratio of respiratory water loss to CO(2) exchange is lower during discontinuous gas exchange. This conclusion is in agreement with other studies of beetles and cockroaches that also support the hygric hypothesis. However, this result does not exclude other adaptive hypotheses supported by work on ants and moth pupae. This ambiguity may arise because there are multiple independent evolutionary origins of DGCs and no single adaptive function underlying their genesis. Alternatively, the observed reduction in water loss during DGCs may be a side effect of a nonadaptive gas exchange pattern that is elicited during periods of inactivity. 相似文献

Stem and leaf water potentials, gas exchange, sap flow, and trunk diameter fluctuations for detecting water stress in lemon trees 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The sensitivity of continuous (on a whole-day basis) and discretely (at midday) measured indicators of the plant water status
in adult lemon trees in response to a cycle of water deprivation and recovery, and the feasibility of obtaining baselines
for tree water status indicators was investigated in 30-year-old Fino lemon trees (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. fil.) grafted on sour orange (C. aurantium L.) rootstocks. Control plants (T0) were irrigated daily above their crop water requirements in order to obtain non-limiting
soil water conditions, while T1 plants were subjected to water stress by withholding irrigation for 50 days, after which time
irrigation was restored and plant recovery was studied for 16 days. In T0 plants the water relations and the plant symptoms
confirmed that they had not suffered waterlogging. In contrast, T1 plants showed a substantial degree of water stress, which
developed very slowly. Maximum daily trunk shrinkage (MDS) increased in response to water stress during the first 15 days
of the experiment, but when the stem water potential (Ψstem) fell below −1.8 MPa, the MDS signal intensity decreased. However, Ψstem and sap flow (SF) signal intensities progressively increased during the water stress period. The results showed that MDS
is a very suitable plant-based indicator for precise irrigation scheduling in adult lemon trees. Reference or baseline relationships
for MDS, Ψstem, and SF measurements as a function of several parameters related to the evaporative demand of the atmosphere were obtained.
This fact open up the possibility of considering a plant-based indicator measurement at a given time relative to the expected
value under non-limiting water conditions, which can be calculated from the reference relationships. 相似文献
