A specimen of Agapetes from Myanmar is described and illustrated as Agapetes grandiflora Hook.f., as a result of comparison with A. burmanica W.E.Evans, A. macrantha (Hook.) Hook.f. and A. variegata (Roxb.) D.Don ex G.Don. This species has extrafloral nectaries on the margins of young leaves and at the apex of calyx lobes.

Elatostema densistriolatum sp. nov., E. latistipulum sp. nov. and E. cyrtandrifolium var. hirsutum var. nov. (Urticaceae) from southwest China

Two new species and one new variety of Elatostema J. R. Forst. & G. Forst. (Urticaceae) are described from Yunnan and Xizang, China. Habitat details and morphological comparison with similar species are given and discussed. The new taxa proposed are: Elatostema densistriolatum W. T. Wang & Zeng. Y. Wu, E. latistipulum W. T. Wang & Zeng Y. Wu and E. cyrtandrifolium (Zoll. & Mor.) Miq. var. hirsutum W. T. Wang & Zeng Y. Wu.

The vicarious differentiation of the alpineGalium serpylloides group (Rubiaceae), endemic to the W. Himalaya

Galium serpylloides agg. comprises a group of locally endemic, disjunct and vicarious taxa in the (sub)alpine zone of the W. Himalaya, from W to E:G. gymnopetalum, G. lahulense, G. serpylloides s. str.,G. saipalense, andG. nepalense. Four of these are new to science;G. serpylloides is newly typified. The main characters of the five species are compared and illustrated, their affinities and evolution are discussed, and a map of distribution is presented.Dedicated to Prof.K. H. Rechinger on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

818. WISTERIA FLORIBUNDA WITH THE TORTUOUS TALE OF THE JAPANESE WISTERIA WITH THE LONGEST RACEMES

The history of the Japanese Wisteria with the longest racemes is fully investigated, with a review of all the names applied to it. The name W. macrobotrys is shown to belong to a different cultivar group now widely grown under the names ‘Burford’, ‘Honko’ and ‘Hocker Edge’. The new combination W. floribunda f. multijuga (Van Houtte) J. Compton & G. Thijsse is made in order to establish long‐term nomenclatural stability. A lectotype is designated for the hybrid name W. × formosa Rehder.

Rational mutagenesis of Thermobifida fusca cutinase to modulate the enzymatic degradation of polyethylene terephthalate

Thermobifida fusca cutinase (TfCut2) is a carboxylesterase (CE) which degrades polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as well as its degradation intermediates [such as oligoethylene terephthalate (OET), or bis-/mono-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET/MHET)] into terephthalic acid (TPA). Comparisons of the surfaces of certain CEs (including TfCut2) were combined with docking and molecular dynamics simulations involving 2HE-(MHET)_3, a three-terephthalate OET, to support the rational design of 22 variants with potential for improved generation of TPA from PET, comprising 15 single mutants (D12L, E47F, G62A, L90A, L90F, H129W, W155F, ΔV164, A173C, H184A, H184S, F209S, F209I, F249A, and F249R), 6 double mutants [H129W/T136S, A173C/A206C, A173C/A210C, G62A/L90F, G62A/F209I, and G62A/F249R], and 1 triple mutant [G62A/F209I/F249R]. Of these, nine displayed no activity, three displayed decreased activity, three displayed comparable activity, and seven displayed increased (~1.3- to ~7.2-fold) activity against solid PET, while all variants displayed activity against BHET. Of the variants that displayed increased activity against PET, four displayed more activity than G62A, the most-active mutant of TfCut2 known till date. Of these four, three displayed even more activity than LCC (G62A/F209I, G62A/F249R, and G62A/F209I/F249R), a CE known to be ~5-fold more active than wild-type TfCut2. These improvements derived from changes in PET binding and not changes in catalytic efficiency.

Primula persimilis sp. nov. (Primulaceae) from Sichuan,China

A new species of Primulaceae, Primula persimilis G. Hao, C.M. Hu & Y. Xu, from Sichuan, China, is described and illustrated. In general morphology it is allied to the species of P. sect. Monocarpicae, characterized by the presence of multi‐cellular hairs, the distinctly petiolate leaves, a campanulate calyx, and a globose or cylindrical capsule with valvate dehiscence. The new species superficially resembles P. tsiangii W.W. Smith, but can be distinguished by its white flowers, longer calyx lobes, and cylindrical capsules.
