Range expansions and biological invasions are prime examples of transient processes that are likely impacted by rapid evolutionary changes. As a spatial process, range expansions are driven by dispersal and movement behaviour. Although it is widely accepted that dispersal and movement may be context‐dependent, for instance density‐dependent, and best represented by reaction norms, the evolution of density‐dependent movement during range expansions has received little experimental attention. We therefore tested current theory predicting the evolution of increased movement at low densities at range margins using highly replicated and controlled range expansion experiments across multiple genotypes of the protist model system Tetrahymena thermophila. Although rare, we found evolutionary changes during range expansions even in the absence of initial standing genetic variation. Range expansions led to the evolution of negatively density‐dependent movement at range margins. In addition, we report the evolution of increased intrastrain competitive ability and concurrently decreased population growth rates in range cores. Our findings highlight the importance of understanding movement and dispersal as evolving reaction norms and plastic life‐history traits of central relevance for range expansions, biological invasions and the dynamics of spatially structured systems in general.  相似文献

The experiments on rats have shown that the elaboration of conditioned drinking reflex in T-maze during administration of 2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine antioxidant with an anti-stress effect was accompanied by the development of state dependent learning. However, its formation was slower, as compared to state dependent learning in response to the known psychotropic drugs. The replacing test with the injection of bicuculline, picrotoxin, Ca valproate, Ro-15-1788, benactyzine, Cleregil, etc. during state dependent learning made it possible to establish the role of GABA and cholinergic systems in the formation of state dependent learning and in the development of disorders in emotional behavioural reactions after long-term administration and withdrawal of 3-hydroxypyridine.  相似文献

It has been suggested that cellular retinoic acid-binding protein (II) (CRABP(II)) may have a role in the movement of retinoic acid (RA) to its nuclear receptors, thereby enhancing the action of RA in the cells in which it is expressed. RA has also been shown to increase expression of CRABP(II). Previous work from our laboratory has shown that 17 beta-estradiol (E2) administration to prepubertal female rats leads to acquisition of the ability of the lining epithelium to synthesize RA as well as to express CRABP(II). To determine whether this appearance of CRABP(II) was dependent on the production of RA, both E2 and RA were administered to ovariectomized rats. E2 administration induced expression of the CRABP(II) gene in the uterus within 4 h, and this induction was not inhibited by prior administration of puromycin, indicating that the induction was direct. In contrast, RA caused no change in CRABP(II) message level, even at times as late as 48 h after administration. Isolation and analysis of 4.5 kb of the 5'-flanking region of the gene revealed no apparent E2-response element. Using this portion of the gene to drive expression of the luciferase gene in transfected cells allowed identification of a region containing an imperfect estrogen-response element and estrogen-response element half-site, necessary for E2-driven induction. A possible Sp1 binding site in the 5'-flanking region of the CRABP(II) gene was also required for this induction. The ability of E2 to induce expression of CRABP(II) suggests that it can enhance the activity of RA, directly affecting expression of retinoid-responsive genes.  相似文献

Effects of density dependence on animal movements have received much attention in ecology, but it is still debated to what extent dispersal and movements in general are density dependent, and their potential contribution to population regulation processes. Here, we determine the occurrence and nature of density dependence in the movements of a Neotropical marsupial, the black‐eared opossum Didelphis aurita Wied‐Neuwied 1826. Using spool‐and‐line tracking devices, we estimated the tortuosity of fine‐scale movements of 149 individuals by their fractal dimension D. We evaluated the relative importance of population size, reproductive or climatic seasons and reproductive maturity of individuals as determinants of movement tortuosity, using a model selection approach. Population size was the most important determinant of movement tortuosity, with season (climatic seasons for females, reproductive seasons for males) and reproductive maturity as secondary but also important variables. We detected a positive density‐dependent effect on movement tortuosity, resulting in more intensive use of areas by individuals during periods of high population size. This positive association between movement tortuosity and population size is more likely to result from intraspecific competition, which forces individuals to explore their environment more intensively during high‐density periods. Therefore, despite being density dependent, movements in D. aurita apparently do not contribute to population regulation mechanisms.  相似文献

Studies of the behavior of Physarum polycephalum amoebae have shown that locomotion of these cells is guided by surfaces composed of aggregated bacteria. Amoebae move readily on both E. coli and agar surfaces. However, when a cell migrating on bacteria encounters an edge of the bacterial surface, the orientation of cell movement changes so that the cell maintains contact with bacteria. Time-lapse cinemicrographic studies employing wild type and mutant cells show that this behavior involves short range interactions between amoebae and bacteria, that it is not dependent on variations in the rate of phagocytosis, and that it is not a simple result of constraints on cell movement imposed by adhesive bonds between amoebae and bacteria. These results provide evidence that guidance of cell locomotion depends on active regulation of the cellular force generating system as the amoebae contact surfaces of varying characteristics and, therefore, suggest that this system is amenable to detailed studies of process involved both in cell-cell recognition and in linking such recognition to regulation of cell movement.  相似文献

Previously the method for determining protein molecular weights from SDS-PAGE depended on the accidental, only partial linearity of protein movement with the logarithm of its molecular weight. A new, mathematically rigorous method with supporting data is now described demonstrating that such movement is dependent upon the reciprocal of protein size. Experimental data, therefore, follow most closely a hyperbolic curve when plotted directly; it becomes linear and passes through the origin when movement is plotted vs the reciprocal of protein molecular weight. In the earlier method determination of the error of a measurement of molecular weight is very complex and never determined. In the method presented here such error is easily estimated and it is identical in both the hyperbolic and linear forms of data presentation. This method may eventually also allow other less-significant forces controlling movement such as protein charge to be analyzed and understood.  相似文献

Based on the current literature, it remains unclear whether electromyographic onset of the deep fibers of the multifidus (DM) is dependent on the direction of shoulder movement and the position of the center of foot pressure (CFP). In the present study, we re-examined the electromyographic onset of the DM during shoulder flexion and extension and investigated the influence of the CFP position before arm movement. Intramuscular and surface electrodes recorded the electromyographic onset of the DM, superficial fibers of the multifidus (SM), rectus abdominis, and anterior and posterior deltoid. Eleven healthy participants performed rapid, unilateral shoulder flexion and extension in response to audio stimuli at three CFP positions: quiet standing, extreme forward leaning, and extreme backward leaning. It was found that the electromyographic onset of the DM and SM relative to the deltoid was dependent on the direction of arm movement. Additionally, of all electromyographic onsets recorded, only that of the DM occurred earlier in the extreme forward leaning position than in the extreme backward leaning position during shoulder flexion. These results suggest that the electromyographic onset of DM was influenced by the biomechanical disturbance such as shoulder movement and CFP position.  相似文献

The effect of a 180° displacement from the normal vertical orientation on longitudinal growth and on the acropetal and basipetal movement of 14C-IAA was investigated in Avena sativa L. and Zea mays L. coleoptile sections. Inversion inhibits growth in intact sections (apex not removed) and in decapitated sections supplied apically with donor blocks containing auxin. Under aerobic conditions, inversion inhibits basipetal auxin movement and promotes acropetal auxin movement, whereas under anaerobic conditions, it does not influence the movement of auxin in either direction. Inversion retards the basipetal movement of the peak of a 30-minute pulse of auxin in corn.

The inversion-induced inhibition of basipetal auxin movement is not explained by an effect of gravity on production, uptake, destruction, exit from sections, retention in tissue, or purely physical movement of auxin. It is concluded that inversion (a) inhibits basipetal transport, the component of auxin movement that is metabolically dependent, and as a result (b) inhibits growth and (c) promotes acropetal auxin movement.

1. The filtration properties of films of renal basement membrane were studied in vitro using pressure filtration chambers. 2. Retention of cytochrome c by the films was found to be dependent upon the filtration pressure indicating that it was transferred across the films by convective as well as diffusive flow. In contrast, serum albumin was transferred by diffusive movement only. 3. When solutions containing both cytochrome c and IgG were filtered it was found that increasing the filtration pressure reduced the flux of cytochrome c across the films. A similar phenomenon occurred when serum was filtered, less protein passed through the films at high filtration pressures. These phenomena are explained by concentration-polarisation effects. 4. The flux of cytochrome c through the films was found to decrease in a non-linear manner as the films thickness was increased. With thin films, the flux of cytochrome c increased in a non-linear manner as the concentration of the protein in the overstanding solution was increased. With thicker films the flux was linearly dependent on concentration. These findings are interpreted as supporting the view that movement of cytochrome c occurs, at least in part, by convective flow.  相似文献

Failure to suppress antagonist muscles can lead to movement dysfunction, such as the abnormal muscle synergies often seen in the upper limb after stroke. A neurophysiological surrogate of upper limb synergies, the selectivity ratio (SR), can be determined from the ratio of biceps brachii (BB) motor evoked potentials to transcranial magnetic stimulation prior to forearm pronation versus elbow flexion. Surprisingly, cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (c-TDCS) over ipsilateral primary motor cortex (M1) reduces (i.e. improves) the SR in healthy adults, and chronic stroke patients. The ability to suppress antagonist muscles may be exacerbated at high movement rates. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the selective muscle activation of the biceps brachii (BB) is dependent on altering frequency demands, and whether the c-tDCS improvement of SR is dependent on task frequency. Seventeen healthy participants performed repetitive isometric elbow flexion and forearm pronation at three rates, before and after c-tDCS or sham delivered to ipsilateral left M1. Ipsilateral c-tDCS improved the SR in a frequency dependent manner by selectively suppressing BB antagonist excitability. Our findings confirm that c-tDCS is an effective tool for improving selective muscle activation, and provide novel evidence for its efficacy at rates of movement where it is most likely to benefit task performance.  相似文献

When PtK2 cells round up in mitosis they leave retraction fibers attached between the substrate and the cell body. Retraction fibers and the region where they meet the cell body are rich in actin filaments as judged by phalloidin staining and electron microscopy. Video microscopy was used to study actin dependent motile processes on retraction fibers. Small, phase-dense nodules form spontaneously on the fibers, and move in to the cell body at a rate of 3 microns/minute. As they move in they increase progressively in phase-density. This movement appears to be related to actin dependent centripetal movement which has been previously studied in lamellipodia. Despite its generality, the mechanism of such movement is unknown, and retraction fibers present some special advantages for its study. Cytochalasin treatment causes nodules to stop moving and dissolve. Withdrawal of the drug causes them to reform and start moving. Surprisingly, movement after cytochalasin withdrawal was often outward, indicating a local reversal of cortical polarity. After a few minutes correct polarity is reestablished by a global control mechanism. The implications of these observations for the mechanism and polarity of actin dependent motility is discussed.  相似文献

Brain dopamine is critically involved in movement control, and its deficiency is the primary cause of motor symptoms in Parkinson disease. Here we report development of an animal model of acute severe dopamine deficiency by using mice lacking the dopamine transporter. In the absence of transporter-mediated recycling mechanisms, dopamine levels become entirely dependent on de novo synthesis. Acute pharmacological inhibition of dopamine synthesis in these mice induces transient elimination of striatal dopamine accompanied by the development of a striking behavioral phenotype manifested as severe akinesia, rigidity, tremor, and ptosis. This phenotype can be reversed by administration of the dopamine precursor, L-DOPA, or by nonselective dopamine agonists. Surprisingly, several amphetamine derivatives were also effective in reversing these behavioral abnormalities in a dopamine-independent manner. Identification of dopamine transporter- and dopamine-independent locomotor actions of amphetamines suggests a novel paradigm in the search for prospective anti-Parkinsonian drugs.  相似文献

The relationship between the movement's parameters and the motor output during the execution of certain intentional motor tasks subsequent to a ballistically initiated movement is determined. The two tasks considered are to arrest the movement and to accelerate it as fast as possible. These experiments are the same as described in the preceding paper (Viviani and Terzuolo, 1973). It is shown that the motor output is dependent on sensory input in normal subjects and that this dependence is absent in cerebellar patients. The phase relations between motor output and angular displacement in normal subjects indicate the likelihood of fusimotor dynamic activity to the muscle spindles when the task is to arrest the movement. Instead, when normal subjects are instructed to accelerate the movement, an appropriately timed fusimotor static activity, i.e. alpha-gamma linkage, is indicated. The appropriately timed switching of fusimotor static and dynamic activation is attributed to the presence of cerebellar activities.  相似文献

Spontaneously arising reticulum cell sarcoma (RCS) tumors in SJL/J mice stimulate syngeneic host T lymphocytes to proliferate and are dependent on host T cells for maintenance and growth. Tumor-associated Ia antigens have been implicated in the proliferative response both in vivo and in vitro, and the responding T cells are predominantly Lyt-1+2- L3T4+. We hypothesized that elimination or depletion of the responding L3T4 subpopulation in vivo should inhibit growth of transplantable RCS tumors, and continued RCS growth may be dependent on the continued presence of L3T4 cells. This hypothesis was tested experimentally by examining the effect of passive administration of L3T4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) into SJL/J mice either before or at different times after tumor inoculation. The tumor inoculum used killed all mice 15 to 30 days after injection. Administration of a single dose of L3T4 mAb 4 days before tumor inoculation resulted in complete depletion of L3T4 cells and complete inhibition of tumor growth. The antibody-treated mice survived with no sign of tumor growth even after complete recovery of L3T4+ cells. These results demonstrate that initiation of tumor growth is dependent on host L3T4+ cells. Administration of mAb as late as 7 days after tumor inoculation resulted in inhibition of tumor growth, and administration of mAb at day 10 resulted in significant inhibition of tumor growth. Compared with the kinetics of tumor growth in normal control mice, administration of L3T4 after tumor inoculation results in tumor growth arrest. These findings demonstrate that continued tumor growth in vivo is dependent on the presence of L3T4+ cells. In the RCS system, the present studies show that administration of mAb to L3T4+ cells is therapeutic in that it inhibits the induction of tumor growth, and it also prevents tumor growth in tumor-bearing animals.  相似文献

Dispersal and the underlying movement behaviour are processes of pivotal importance for understanding and predicting metapopulation and metacommunity dynamics. Generally, dispersal decisions are condition‐dependent and rely on information in the broad sense, like the presence of conspecifics. However, studies on metacommunities that include interspecific interactions generally disregard condition‐dependence. Therefore, it remains unclear whether and how dispersal in metacommunities is condition‐dependent and whether rules derived from single‐species contexts can be scaled up to (meta)communities. Using experimental protist metacommunities, we show how dispersal and movement depend on and are adjusted by the strength of interspecific interactions. We found that the predicting movement and dispersal in metacommunities requires knowledge on behavioural responses to intra‐ and interspecific interaction strengths. Consequently, metacommunity dynamics inferred directly from single‐species metapopulations without taking interspecific interactions into account are likely flawed. Our work identifies the significance of condition‐dependence for understanding metacommunity dynamics, stability and the coexistence and distribution of species.  相似文献

Migration and behaviour of Dictyostelium slugs results from coordinated movement of its constituent cells. It has been proposed that cell movement is controlled by propagating waves of cAMP as during aggregation and in the mound. We report the existence of optical density waves in slugs; they are initiated in the tip and propagate backwards. The waves reflect periodic cell movement and are mediated by cAMP, as injection of cAMP or cAMP phosphodiesterase disrupts wave propagation and results in effects on cell movement and, therefore, slug migration. Inhibiting the function of the cAMP receptor cAR1 blocks wave propagation, showing that the signal is mediated by cAR1. Wave initiation is strictly dependent on the tip; in decapitated slugs no new waves are initiated and slug movement stops until a new tip regenerates. Isolated tips continue to migrate while producing waves. We conclude from these observations that the tip acts as a pacemaker for cAMP waves that coordinate cell movement in slugs.  相似文献

Summary The log. 14C activity/distance profile in the stems of Helianthus seedlings consists of two main parts: region 1, the linear advancing front and region 2, which is also linear but with a less steep slope. As the front passes down the stem, the slope of region 1 remains constant but the amplitude of the front becomes attenuated. The attenuation increases with temperature. The apparent velocity of the profile, which can be derived from the position of the front, is also temperature dependent. Small amounts of 14C occur in the stem ahead of the profile; these amounts increase with a rise of temperature. Region 2 behaves differently: its slope decreases steadily with time but it is insensitive to temperature. The behaviour of this region is dependent on the movement of tracer into an immobile fraction as well as on the longitudinal movement of tracer in the translocation stream.  相似文献

We have found that the spontaneous migration of bovine aortic endothelial cells from the edge of a denuded area in a confluent monolayer is dependent upon the release of endogenous basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Cell movement is blocked by purified polyclonal rabbit IgG to bFGF as well as affinity purified anti-bFGF IgG and anti-bFGF F(ab')2 fragments. The inhibitory effect of the immunoglobulins is dependent upon antibody concentration, is reversible, is overcome by the addition of recombinant bFGF, and is removed by affinity chromatography of the antiserum through a column of bFGF-Sepharose. Cell movement is also reversibly inhibited by the addition of protamine sulfate and suramin; two agents reported to block bFGF binding to its receptor. The addition of recombinant bFGF to wounded monolayers accelerates the movement of cells into the denuded area. Transforming growth factor beta which has been shown to antagonize several other effects of bFGF also inhibits cell movement. The anti-bFGF IgG prevents the movement of bovine capillary endothelial cells, BHK-21, NIH 3T3, and human skin fibroblasts into a denuded area. Antibodies to bFGF, as well as suramin and protamine sulfate also suppress the basal levels of plasminogen activator and DNA synthesis in bovine aortic endothelial cells.  相似文献

It is a routine practice to subject captive groups of primates to single-file movement; yet no records on the sequences of such progressions have been published. The present study analyzes the progression sequence during prompted single-file movement for the purpose of routine weighing in a captive troop of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). The animals had to overcome fear before leaving their home pen; nonetheless, they left in a well-defined, stable sequence. An individual's position in this progression order as well as the consistency with which it retained its place were dependent on its age but not on its dominance status. It was suggested that the monkeys gradually learned with age to master their fear with the prospect of quickly returning to their home pen.  相似文献

The distribution of Trachinus vipera , worldwide and around the British coast, is summarised. Field observations indicate that the fish occurs throughout the intertidal zone; is more active at low light intensities, and can survive the low tide period buried in the intertidal sand; can tolerate salinities as low as 19%0, for short periods; exhibits a tidal periodicity, is more active on the flood tide than the ebb tide; moves into deeper warmer water in winter, the extent.of the movement being temperature dependent. The critical temperature initiating this movement is probably 5deg; C. The fish is not available for capture in cold weather, because it may be hibernating, buried in the sand.  相似文献
