The concept of thermal time is applied to the prediction ofduration from sowing to maturity of calabrese (Brassica oleraceavar italica cv. Corvet), using a multiple linear regressionmodel. Given daily records of maximum and minimum air temperatureand total solar radiation, maturity could be predicted to within±7 d for nine out of ten crops over the four years considered.Within any one year the precision improved to ±5 d. Calabreseappeared to stop developing at a base temperature of 0 °C.Thermal time accounted for 74·3 per cent of the variationin reciprocal total duration and solar radiation a further 17·7per cent. Factorial combinations of four photoperiods (10, 11·33,12·66 and 16 h d-1) and three mean diurnal temperatures(20·2, 24·1 and 28·1°C) were imposedon nodulated plants of three Nigerian bambara groundnut genotypes[Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc., syn. Voandzeia subterranea (L.)Thouars] grown in glasshouses in The Netherlands. The photothermalresponse of the onset of flowering and the onset of poddingwere determined. The time from sowing to first flower (f) wasdetermined by noting the day on which the first open flowerappeared. The time from sowing to the onset of podding (p) wasestimated from linear regressions of pod dry weight againsttime from sowing. Developmental rates were derived from thereciprocals of f and p. In two genotypes, 'Ankpa 2' and 'Yola',flowering occurred irrespective of photoperiod and 1/f was controlledby temperature only, occurring sooner at 28·1 than at20·2°C. The third genotype, 'Ankpa 4', was sensitiveto temperature and photoperiod and f was increased by coolertemperatures and photoperiods > 12·66 h d-1 at 20·2°Cand > 11·33 h d-1 at 24·1 and 28·1°C.In contrast, p was affected by temperature and photoperiod inall three genotypes. In bambara groundnut photoperiod-sensitivitytherefore increases between the onset of flowering and the onsetof podding. The most photoperiod-sensitive genotype with respectto p was 'Ankpa 4', followed by 'Yola' and 'Ankpa 2'. Therewas also variation in temperature-sensitivity between the genotypesinvestigated. Vernalization requirement, as measured by days from sowing toear emergence (plants grown under an 18-h photoperiod), andspikelet number per ear were recorded for 17 synthetic hexaploidwheats and the six tetraploid (Triticum durum) and the ninediploid T. tauschii parents used to synthesize them. The tetraploid parents and the synthetic hexaploids had springphenotypes (little or no vernalization requirement) whereasthe T. tauschii parents were all winter types (strong vernalizationrequirement). The tetraploid wheats and the synthetic hexaploidsreached ear emergence 50·3 to 63·8 d and 58·2to 75·3 d after sowing, respectively, while the T. tauschiilines reached ear emergence 114·3 to 179·5 d aftersowing. The spring habit of the synthetic hexaploids demonstrates theepistasis of spring over winter habit. It is considered thatwith a presumed single vrn locus in the diploid species T. tauschiithe range of ear emergence in these lines is consistent withthe action of multiple alleles at that locus. Although there was no general epistasis for spikelet number,the tetraploid parents appear to be exerting more influenceover spikelet number in the synthetic hexaploids than T. tauschii.The well established association between the duration from sowingto ear emergence and spikelet number was not evident eitherwithin each ploidy group or when the 32 lines were consideredtogether. Lolium temulentum seedlings were grown on a nutrient mediumcontaining NH4NO2 at 0, 0·1, 0·5, 1·0 and4·3 mmoll–1 as the sole N source. Relative andabsolute extension rates, maximal leaf size, duration of extensiongrowth, rate of leaf appearance and plastochron index were determinedfrom the parameters of Richards functions fitted to lengthsof laminae measured at intervals after sowing. The final lengthof leaf I was relatively insensitive to N whereas mean relativeextension rate was increased and duration of growth decreasedwith increasing NH4NO2 concentration. Leaves 2 and 3 enlargedprogressively with N at concentrations up to 1·0 mmoll–1but were unresponsive thereafter. There was no significant correlationbetween final length and mean relative extension rate for leaves1 to 3. Leaves 4 to 6 continued to show increasing length beyond1·0 mmoll–1 N and final length was significantlycorrelated with mean relative extension rate. Increasing N increasedthe rate of leaf appearance by decreasing the duration of leafextension and plastochron. These results are discussed in relationto the control of leaf and N turnover. Low Moisture Content Limits to Relations Between Seed Longevity and Moisture   总被引:25,自引:1,他引:24  
Discontinuities at low moisture contents in the otherwise logarithmicrelations between seed longevity and seed moisture content (%,f. wt basis) in hermetic storage at 65 °C were detectedat 2–0% in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.), 3·5%in onion (Allium cepa L.), 4·5% in sugar beet (Beta vulgarisL.), 4·6% in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), 5·3%in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) and wheat (Triticum aestinumL.), and 5·6% in cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.].In contrast, the equilibrium relative humidity of seeds at thesevalues was similar, varying between 9·9% (onion and sugarbeet) and 11·5% (wheat). The mean value was 10·5%r.h. (s.e. 0.2). There was no significant (P > 0·05)effect of further reduction in seed moisture content below thesecritical values on longevity, except in wheat (P < 0·005),in which there was a further increase in longevity. In soyabean [Glycine max (L) Merrill], the logarithmic relation continueddown to the lowest moisture content investigated, 3·3%(11·4% equilibrium relative humidity). Above the criticalvalue, seed longevity in groundnut showed the least sensitivityto increase in percentage moisture content, while barley showedthe greatest, the values of the viability constant Cw (slopeof the negative logarithmic relation between longevity and moisture)being 4·089 (s.e. 0·278) and 5·966 (s.e.0·325), respectively. These differences in the valueof Cw among the eight crops were significant P < 0·005),whereas the relative sensitivity of seed longevity to changein equilibrium relative humidity above the critical moisturecontent did not differ significantly among the eight (P >0·10) and was equivalent to a doubling of longevity foreach 8·7% reduction in equilibrium relative humidity.Accordingly it is concluded that the relative effect of waterpotential on seed longevity can be considered to be the samefor these and probably also for many other orthodox species. Four cultivars of soyabean [Glycine max (L.) Merill] of diverseorigin were grown in pots in a plastic-house maintained at day/nighttemperatures of 30/20°C. Plants were transferred at varioustimes after sowing from short (11·5 h d-1) to long (13·5h d-1) days and vice versa. The times from sowing to first floweringfor control plants grown continuously in short days varied from38 to 53 d, whereas the flowering of plants grown continuouslyin long days was delayed by about 20 d in each cultivar. Theduration of the initial photoperiod-insensitive phase (oftencalled the juvenile phase) varied three-fold between cultivars,i.e. from 11 to 33 d. As expected, the duration of the photoperiod-sensitivephase was greater in long days, but there was comparativelylittle genetic variation in photoperiod-sensitivity as definedin terms of days delay in time to flowering per hour increasein photoperiod (9-11 d h-1). Similarly, there was little variationin the photoperiod-insensitive post-inductive phase; it rangedfrom 15 to 20 d. In consequence, the duration of the initialphotoperiod-insensitive phase was a strong determinant of timeto first flowering in these cultivars. The importance of thisso-called juvenile trait is discussed in terms of preventingthe premature flowering of USA-adapted cultivars when grownin short tropical daylengths and thus improving the adaptationof the crop to the lower latitudes.Copyright 1993, 1999 AcademicPress Glycine max (L.) Measuring the Canopy Net Photosynthesis of Glasshouse Crops   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A null balance method is described for measuring net photosynthesisof mature canopies of cucumber and other protected crops overperiods of 10 min in a single-span glasshouse (c. 9m x 18m inarea). Accuracy of control of the CO2 concentration in the greenhouseatmosphere is within ±10 vpm of the normal ambient level(c. 350 vpm). The amounts of CO2 used in canopy net photosynthesisare measured with linear mass flowmeters accurate to within±0.80g. The total errors incurred in measuring canopynet photosynthesis at an ambient CO2 level are estimated tobe of the order of ± 1·2% in bright light (350W m–2, PAR)and ±3·6% in dull light (100W m–2, PAR). Measurements of the rates of net photosynthesis of a maturecanopy of a cucumber crop were made at near-ambient CO2 concentrationsover a range (0–350 W m–2) of natural light fluxdensities. A model of light absorption and photosynthesis applicableto row crops was used to obtain a net photosynthesis versuslight response curve for the cucumber crop. At a light fluxdensity of 350 W m–2 the fitted value of canopy net photosynthesiswas 2.65 mg CO2 m–2s–1 (equivalent to over 95 kgCO2 ha–1h–1). The results are discussed in relationto the need for CO2 supplements to avoid depletion in both ventilatedand unventilated glasshouses during late spring and summer. A comparison was made between seedling establishment following sowing with the Mk2 dibber drill and a conventional coulter drill at three sowing occasions with both lettuce and calabrese. Different seed covering materials used to cover dibber-drilled seed were also compared. With lettuce, the rate and uniformity of seedling emergence and the numbers of seedlings emerging were greater following sowing with the dibber drill than with the coulter drill. Seedling establishment was further improved with irrigation especially when seeds were sown with a small quantity of the hydrophillic polymer, Alcosorb, which avoided associated problems of increased soil impedance. Alcosorb was a more effective seed cover than a peat and vermiculite mix and better suited for mechanical metering. Results indicate that the dibber drill can be considered as a realistic and cheaper alternative to transplanting for establishing later-season lettuce crops. With calabrese, however, percentage seedling emergence on all dibber-drilled plots was lower than that on plots sown with the coulter drill. This result may have been due to seed-coat damage caused as seeds are plunged into the soil during sowing with the dibber drill.  相似文献

The effects of a range of applied nitrate (NO3) concentrations(0–20 mol m3) on germination and emergence percentageof Triticum aestivum L. cv. Otane were examined at 30, 60, 90and 120 mm sowing depths. Germination percentage was not affectedby either sowing depth or applied NO3 concentration whereasemergence percentage decreased with increased sowing depth regardlessof applied NO3 concentration. Nitrate did not affectemergence percentage at 30 mm sowing depth, but at 60 to 120mm depth, emergence percentage decreased sharply with an increasedapplied NO3 concentration of 0 to 1·0 mol m–3then decreased only slightly with further increases in appliedNO3 of about 5·0 mol m–3. Root and shoot growth, NO3 accumulation and nitrate reductaseactivity (NRA) of plants supplied with 0, 1·0 and 1·0mol m–3 NO3 at a sowing depth of 60 mm were measuredprior to emergence. The coleoptile of all seedlings opened withinthe substrate. Prior to emergence from the substrate, shootextension growth was unaffected by additional NO3 butshoot fr. wt. and dry wt. were both greater at 1·0 and1·0 mol m–3 NO3 than with zero NO3.Root dry wt. was unaffected by NO3. Nitrate concentrationand NRA in root and shoot were always low without NO3.At 1·0 and 10 mol m3 NO3, NO3 accumulatedin the root and shoot to concentrations substantially greaterthan that applied and caused the induction of NRA. Regardlessof the applied NO3 concentration, seedlings which failedto emerge still had substantial seed reserves one month afterplanting. Coleoptile length was substantially less for seedlingswhich did not emerge than for seedlings which emerged, but wasnot affected by NO3. It is proposed that (a) decreasedemergence percentage with increased sowing depth was due tothe emergence of leaf I from the coleoptile within the substrateand (b) decreased emergence percentage with additional NO3was due to the increased expansion of leaf 1 within the substrateresulting in greater folding and damage of the leaf. A sequential study describing the content (%) of alkaloids inleaves of Erythroxylum coca var. coca Lam. from leaf bud developmentto leaf drop has not previously been conducted. The length oftime the leaf resides on the plant and its concurrent metabolicactivity also has not been defined. In the present study, cocaine,methyl ecgonine, hygrine, tropinone, trans -cinnamoylcocaine,cis-cinnamoylcocaine, tropacocaine and cuscohygrine were monitoredto determine: (1) their content and patterns of accumulationfrom leaf bud to leaf drop; (2) the time leaves resided on theplant; and (3) whether leaves were metabolically active untilleaf drop. E. coca plants were grown in a controlled environmentfor 37 months. Leaves similar in chronological age were extractedand analysed for alkaloid content by gas chromatography (GC)and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Cocaine washighest in 7 d old rolled leaves (0·75%) and declinedto 0·39% at leaf drop. Cocaine, methyl ecgonine, hygrine,tropinone, trans -cinnamoylcocaine, cis-cinnamoylcocaine, cuscohygrineand tropacocaine content in 35 d old (mature) leaves was 0·61,0·59, 0·68, 0·08, 0·31, 0·55,0·52, and 0·05%. respectively. Cocaine, methylecgonine, hygrine, cis -cinnamoylcocaine, and cuscohygrine displayeda gradual decline from week 2 to week 36 of leaf duration. Tropinoneand tropacocaine were the least abundant of the alkaloids monitored.Cis-cinnamoylcocaine content exceeded cocaine at week 12, 16,and weeks 19 to 23 of leaf duration. Trans -cinnamoylcocainewas highest in rolled leaves (week 1) and in expanded leavesafter week 30. The monitored alkaloids appeared to be part ofthe metabolically active pool of the leaf. Negative linear relations were detected (P < 0·005)between the rate of progress from sowing to panicle initiationand CO2 concentration (210-720 µmol CO2 mol-1 air) fortwo genotypes of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. Relationsbetween CO2 concentration and the rate of progress from sowingto first flowering were also negative in soyabean [Glycine max(L.) Merrill] (P < 0·025), but positive in cowpea[Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] (P < 0·025), albeitthat in both grain legumes sensitivity was much less than insorghum. Thus CO2 elevation does not delay flowering in allshort-day species. The considerable effect of CO2 concentrationon times to panicle initiation resulted in large differencesamong the sorghum plants at this developmental stage; with increasein CO2 concentration, plants were taller with slightly moreleaves and more pronounced apical extension. At the same timeafter sowing however, sorghum plants were heavier (P < 0·05)at 210 than at 360 µmol CO2 mol-1 air. The linear relationship between temperature and developmentrate has been widely recognized and it has been suggested thatthermal units (the summation of daily mean temperature abovea base temperature) can predict the phenological developmentof a crop. The aim of this paper was to determine the base temperaturefor different phenological phases of wheat. Two mediterraneanwheat cultivars and five sowing dates were used to obtain differentmean temperatures during development and different developmentalrates. The linear regression of development rate against meantemperatures for each period indicated that there were no uniquebase temperatures for all stages of the life span and valuesclose to 4°C and to 9·5°C were found to be bestfits for base temperatures before and after the terminal spikeletstage of both cultivars. A model to predict wheat developmentwas validated with another data set, which included differentwheat cultivars and sowing dates. Estimates of the error indevelopmental prediction by using a single base temperatureof 0°C is discussed as a function of separate developmentstages. Three fungicide rates, 4·48, 2.24, and 1.12 kg peT ha,and four spray intervals, 5, 7, 10, and14-day intervals, were investigated for the control of Phytophthoraleaf blight of taro in a subtropical field environment in Hawaii.The fungicide rate was studied in two separate locations onthe windward sides of the island of Kauai. The fungicide utilizedin these experiments was a co-ordination product of zinc ionand manganese ethylene bisdithiocarbamate (Dithane M-45, 80per cent WP). In the lower rainfall location, there was no differencedue to different fungicide rates while in the wetter location,the 4·48 kg per ha rate gave better control than the1·12 kg per ha rate. There was no significant differencebetween the 5, 7, and IO-day spray intervals butwhen compared with the 14-day interval, the 5-day interval wassuperior. Periods of increased rainfall were reflected in thefollowing week by increased lesion counts. Present data indicatethat rainfall is a major factor to consider as a basis for predictingdisease was occurrences and may be utilized for planning intervalof fungicide application. The amount of disease was a functionof initial disease levels, rainfall, temperature, relative humidity,fungicide rate, and spray interval between fungicide applications.Applications of fungicide at weekly intervals when weekly rainfallaccumulation exceeded 1 cm per week and/or when lesion countsexceeded more than one per plant gave substantial disease control.Thus, once these parameters of disease have been established,fungicide application could be governed conveniently by monitoringrainfall and disease incidence to achieve practical Phytophthowraleaf blight control. The 2·24 and 4·48 kg ha-1rates gave significant yield increases over the 1·12and check (no fungicide) treatments where Phytophthora leafblight occurred in epidemic proportions.  相似文献

The effects of various levels of copper on the uptake and distributionof copper in Chrysanthemum morifolium grown in solution cultureand peat-sand have been examined. Whole plants growing in shortdays were sampled at regular intervals, divided into roots,stem, leaves and lateral shoots, and analysed for copper. Thepartitioning of copper between these tissues showed that a relativelylarge proportion (30–40 per cent) of the total plant copperwas accumulated in the roots of normal plants during the harvestingperiod, compared with approximately 10 per cent in the rootsof copper deficient plants. Whilst the copper content (ug g–1) of leaves and stemfrom normal plants was negatively correlated with the amountof dry matter produced (P < 0·001), the correspondingcopper deficient tissues showed little variation in copper contentwith increases in tissue dry weight. A more detailed investigationof the copper content of leaves from normal plants showed thatgradients existed within the plant with respect to both leafposition and time of harvest which could be described by a singlecubic surface equation (P < 0·001).  相似文献

Biochemical properties, i.e. endogenous abscisic acid, proline,sugars, respiration, adenosine phosphates and adenylate energycharge, and growth and moisture content were measured duringthe development of seeds of Machilus thunbergii. As dry matteraccumulated in the embryo during development, moisture content,ABA, proline, respiration and sugars all declined. At maturity,the dry mass of the seeds failed to attain a plateau beforethe period of natural seed shedding; the axis and cotyledonsreached moisture contents of 58 and 45%, respectively. Dryingof immature seeds at 73% relative humidity and 25 °C for30 d resulted in a complete loss of viability at all developmentalstages tested with the exception of mature seeds that were ableto tolerate a 5% decrease in moisture content before germinationdeclined. ABA was detected in all embryos tested, with a maximum value16.·16 µg g-1 d. wt about midway through development.Although the presence of ABA induced no tolerance to desiccationof mature seeds, it did coincide with decreased content of waterin the developing seeds and decreased respiration. Desiccationdamage of M. thunbergii seeds occurred when moisture contentwas still high (45%) and this damage was not related to theabsence of oligosaccharides in the mature seeds. We concludethat developing embryos and mature seeds of M. thunbergii haveproperties common to many recalcitrant seeds, with seeds beingsensitive to desiccation at all stages, having a prominent ABApeak, little proline, lacking oligosaccharides, and specifically,little dormancy and a moderate rate of respiration of matureseeds (0·9 µmol O2 min-1 g-1 f. wt). Adenosinetriphosphate content and energy charge decreased from stagefour to stage eight of seed development, then increased againto 103 nmol g-1 d. wt and 0·73, respectively, in matureseeds. Dynamics of four macro-nutrients were studied in an age series(7, 17, 30, 46 and 56 years) of Himalayan alder (Alnus nepalensisD. Don) plantations in the Kalimpong forest division of theeastern Himalayas. Concentrations of nutrients were in the orderN > K > Ca > P in most of the tree components and inunderstorey vegetation. There was an inverse relationship betweennutrient concentrations of perennial parts and diameter at breastheight. The relative contributions of standing state of nutrientsin different tree components of mature plantations were in theorder; bole > branch > below-ground part > twig andleaf > catkin. Sequential arrangement of nutrient storagein tree components was: N > K > Ca > P. Soil totalN and available P increased with plantation age. Annual inputsof nutrients (kg ha-1) to the forest-floor via litterfall were:183-235 N, 4·9-7·0 P, 33·5-39·5K, and 9·2-10·8 Ca. Total annual accretion ofN through biological fixation ranged from 29 to 117 kg ha-1in different plantations. Turnover rate and turnover time fordifferent nutrients in the age series of plantations fluctuatedbetween 0·10-0·55 year-1 and 1·8-9·3years, respectively. Nutrient use efficiencies decreased withplantation age for all nutrients except for calcium. Determination of a Critical Nitrogen Dilution Curve for Winter Wheat Crops   总被引:31,自引:0,他引:31  
A set of N-fertilization field experiments was used to determinethe 'critical nitrogen concentration', i.e, the minimal concentrationof total N in shoots that produced the maximum aerial dry matter,at a given time and field situation. A unique 'critical nitrogendilution curve' was obtained by plotting these concentrationsNct (% DM) vs. accumulated shoot biomass DM (t ha-1). It couldbe described by the equation: Nct = 5·35DM-0·442 when shoot biomass was between 1·55 and 12 t ha-1. Anexcellent fit was obtained between model and data (r2 = 0·98,15 d.f.). A very close relationship was found using reducedN instead of total N, because the nitrate concentrations inshoots corresponding to critical points were small. The criticalcurve was rather close to those reported by Greenwood et al.(1990) for C3 plants. However, this equation did not apply whenshoot biomass was less than 1·55 t ha-1. In this case,the critical N concentration was independent of shoot biomass:the constant critical value Nct = 4·4% is suggested forreduced-N. The model was validated in all the experimental situations,in spite of large differences in growth rate, cultivar, soiland climatic conditions; shoot biomass varying from 0·2to 14 t ha-1. Plant N concentration was found to vary by a factor of fourat a given shoot biomass level. In the heavily fertilized treatments,shoot N concentration could be 60% higher than the criticalconcentration. Most (on average 80%) of the extra N accumulatedwas in the form of reduced N. There is little published information on the physiological behaviourof carrots at the crop level. Here we derive and test a simplemodel for the potential yield of carrot crops. The model calculatesgreen leaf area index (L) using a daily time step. Dry matterproduction is related linearly to light interception, calculatedfromL and canopy light extinction coefficient (k). Two stagesof growth are distinguished. In stage 1, leaf expansion on eachplant is unaffected by neighbouring plants. Stage 2 commenceswhen L reaches a critical value and the plants start to interact.Compared to stage 1, stage 2 has slower leaf expansion and ak which varies with plant density. Dry matter partitioning betweenshoots and the storage root depends on L. We calibrated themodel for two processing cultivars, ‘Chantenay Red Core’and ‘Red Hot’, using data from a 1997–98 plantdensity experiment in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The model accountedfor 72% of the observed variation in root size and 79% of thevariation in yield. We tested the model against results fromtwo experiments in 1995–96 and 1996–97. In bothexperiments the same two cultivars were sown at three differentsowing times. Overall, the model accounted for 72% of the observedvariation in root size and 66% of the variation in yield, showingthat it is portable to other environments. Finally, we appliedthe model to interpret the effects of sowing date in these twoexperiments. Previous attempts were confounded by variationin plants m-2with sowing date. The model allowed us to separatethe effects of these factors, and indicated that early sowingsubstantially benefited yield. A field study was conducted to test the hypothesis that wheatdevelopment rate responds to the rate of change of photoperiod.Two wheat cultivars (Condor and Thatcher) were sown on 18 Aug.1992 at Melbourne (38° S). Photoperiod was extended artificiallyto give five treatments up to terminal spikelet initiation (TS)viz.: natural photoperiod (rate of change of photoperiod, 2·3mind d-1), two faster rates of change (9·8 and 13·1min d-1) and two constant photoperiods of 14·0 and 15·5h. After TS, the two constant photoperiods were extended to15·0 and 16·5 h, respectively and treatments wererandomly re-allocated, i.e. some plots received different photoperiodregimes before and after TS. There were no significant differences among treatments in thelength of the period from sowing (S) to seedling emergence (E)phase, ranging from 15 to 16·3 d. The rate of developmentfrom E to TS responded to increases in photoperiod in both cultivars,increasing with average photoperiod across all treatments butthere was no effect of rate of change of photoperiod independentof its average photoperiod. The rate of development from TSto anthesis (A) did not show any trend with average photoperiod.This lack of effect of photoperiod on the period from TS toA contrasts with other results from the literature and possiblereasons for this conflicting result are discussed. Rate of changeof photoperiod did not affect the duration of the phase fromTS to A either. Elemental and proximate organic compositions were determinedfor biomass samples from two cultivars of grain sorghum [Sorghumbicolor (L.) Moench] grown in the field with two levels of nitrogensupply. Several methods of calculating the costs of biomasssynthesis were compared. Penning de Vries' Production Values(PV), based on proximate analyses and Glucose Values (GV) calculatedfrom elemental analyses or heats of combustion, yielded similartrends in response to variation in nitrogen supply and plantage but were not different for the two cultivars. The correctnessof the GV calculations was confirmed through comparisons ofmeasured and predicted heats of combustion. The ratio of PV/GV,representing the growth efficiency (E) of the samples, was closeto constant (0·84 + 0·02). Since PV is an estimateof the true growth yield, the constant growth efficiency allowsthe estimation of that value from elemental analyses. The truegrowth yield of the sorghum crops ranged from 0·73 to0·74 g biomass g–1 glucose when grown with adequateN and from 0·77 to 0·78 with low N supply. Overthe crop cycle, with adequate N, 0·19 of the C used ingrowth processes was calculated as lost in growth respiration;with limited N, 0·17 was lost. Sorghum bicolor (L.)
