Helminths of mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula fulvorufula) and gray rhebok (Pelea capreolus) were investigated in South Africa between June 1999 and February 2002. Forty-one mountain reedbuck were culled at Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve over 8 different periods, and 25 mountain reedbuck were culled at Tussen die Riviere Nature Reserve over 3 different periods. A total of 17 kinds of helminths were found at the 2 sites, including 15 nematodes, 1 trematode, and 1 cestode. At Sterkfontein, the most prevalent and abundant species were Cooperia yoshidai, Longistrongylus schrenki, and Haemonchus contortus, with the latter 2 being more abundant during November/December than at other times of the year, probably because infective larvae increased on pasture at that time. No statistical differences were found in parasite loads between male and female mountain reedbuck. No correlation was found between fecal egg counts and adult worm counts or between parasite counts and body condition. At Tussen die Riviere, helminths in mountain reedbuck were less prevalent and abundant than at Sterkfontein. The most important species were Nematodirus spathiger, Trichostrongylus falculatus, and Cooperia rotundispiculum. Four gray rhebok died of natural causes at Sterkfontein, from which 5 kinds of helminths were recovered, including C. yoshidai and Paracooperioides peleae.  相似文献

Populations of Limnothrix redekei, Oscillatoria lanceaeformis, Planktothrix agardhii and Pseudanabaena limnetica were found in a hypertrophic, gravel-pit lake near Madrid (Spain), throughout a one year sampling at weekly intervals. Physico-chemical factors, phytoplankton biomass and net growth rates were measured. Oscillatoria lanceaeformis was only observed a few weeks, probably being related to phosphorus limitation. Planktothrix agardhii biomass was related to PhAR irradiances, light attenuation coefficient in the water, Brunt-Väisäla frequency and decrease of soluble reactive phosphorus. Limnothrix redekei and Pseudanabaena limnetica biomass values were related to a decrease of inorganic nitrogen and temperature. A different lag response of populations was observed in relation to the environmental features.  相似文献

The population dynamics of two small cichlid fishes (Pharyngochromis darlingi andPseudocrenilabrus philander) were studied in Lake Kariba, a very large African man-made lake. They are of no economic importance but make up about 14% and 7% respectively of the inshore fish population and are the major components of the diet of fish-eating birds on the lake.P. darlingi isthe larger species (L = 156.5 mm) and is found on both shelving and steep, eroding shores. The estimates of growth obtained forP. darlingi differ considerably from those given in an earlier study in Lake Kariba and some possible reasons for this are discussed. Ferrissia wautieri, a freshwater limpet, is a widely distributed species in The Netherlands. In a pond near Nijmegen samples were taken twice a month over the year to study the population size and structure of this species in relation to the water temperature. Only ancyloids were found. Production of juveniles is temperature-dependent; peak numbers occurred in July and August. Just-hatched juveniles (shell length 0.6–1.0 mm) occurred over a lengthy period in the year, but were absent in March and April. During these months the collected numbers of specimens were very low. Morpho-physiological specialization related to foraging can act as constraints on behaviour and ecological patterns of abundance and distribution. We tested this prediction in two species (weeping or screaming hairy armadillos Chaetophractus vellerosus Gray, 1865 and mulitas Dasypus hybridus Desmarest, 1804) that represent the two subfamilies of armadillos (Dasypodidae, Xenarthra): Euphractinae and Dasypodinae. The first subfamily possesses a well-developed masticatory apparatus that is considered primitive within the Xenarthra, while Dasypodinae show reductions in various aspects of cranial morphology. We sampled signs (burrows and foraging holes) and captured both species on 34 farms randomly selected in the north-eastern Pampas region of Argentina. We analyzed several niche dimensions. The two species showed significant differences in habitat use, seasonal patterns and diet. Weeping armadillos were generalists in their diet and active throughout the year. They were associated with calcareous-sand soil, as expected for a burrowing animal of the deserts. They tolerated a wide range of environmental conditions. We found that mulitas are myrmecophagous, and that they demonstrated a reduction in body temperature and activity during the cold season. As expected from their geographical distribution, mulitas used mainly vegetation with high cover and were associated with humic soils. Niche segregation between the two species of armadillos appeared to originate from different degrees of dietary specialization.  相似文献

Population dynamics of Stylaria lacustris were analyzed over 2 years in a pond located at Los Talas, Argentina. In both years, the peak in abundance, due to intense asexual reproduction, fell at the end of winter, and was followed by mature individuals. The species was not collected during summer. Temperature was the main factor regulating the population through both sexual and asexual reproduction. In the second year, density was lower and correlated with a lower water level and a reduced vegetation development. Individuals were randomly distributed in periods of high abundance and contagious when density was low. Generation time was 15 days.  相似文献

Oxiclinal rotifer species show high concentrations just above the oxic-anoxic interface in the hypolimnion of some lakes. The stratification of their populations is best shown by sampling at close depth intervals and quantifying their densities by the Utermöhl technique. With this technique we were able to count males which otherwise pass through filters and more accurately count egg production. We evaluated female, male and egg numbers of the two main oxiclinal species of lake Arcas-2: Filinia hofmanni and Anuraeopsis fissa, during two annual cycles (1990–91). F. hofmanni was an exclusive oxiclinal species. It had an exponential growth phase at the onset of stratification giving a distinct spring peak. The population then maintained a high density during summer, but was almost absent the rest of the year. This cycle is repeated annually but population density can vary among years, depending on winter-spring circulation. Sexuality was always observed when the animal was present in the samples, with a maximum of males and resting eggs at the peak of the population. Resting eggs were always inside females. The annual cycle of A. fissa is displaced with respect to that of F. hofmanni: A. fissa attained greatest densities during summer, until the autumn overturn. Mixis in A. fissa was restricted to the end of the stratification period. Moreover, A. fissa occured throughout the vertical profile and secondarily occupied the oxicline.  相似文献

The spatial variations in the densities of adult (>1 year old) musselsMytilus edulis L. in the Exe estuary, South-west England, are investigated in relation to six potentially significant environmental gradients; distance up-estuary and up-shore, substrate softness, mussel bed topography, bed area and proportion covered by algae. The most important correlate of mussel density was the up-shore gradient, as measured by exposure time; mussels were densest just below mid-tide level. The level of recruitment of spat mussels (O yr) to each bed depended on the densities of adults already present; more spat were recruited where adults were denser. Their subsequent mortality was strongly density dependent, with the numbers surviving the winter also being related to the density of adults. Hence the population as a whole was self-sustaining and densities on the individual beds were related to the up-shore gradient of exposure time. The question of how adult densities became established in the first place is therefore discussed. In former times, fishermen laid many mussel beds over the estuary and it is concluded that, once abandoned, only those placed at or below the mid-tide level survived.  相似文献

Abstract:  Population dynamics of the citrus leaf-miner (CLM) Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, and its major parasitoid Citrostichus phyllocnistoides (Narayanan) were investigated from June to September 1994 at the teaching and research farm of the Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University (FAFU), south-east China. Based on the field investigation, the functional and numerical responses of C. phyllocnistoides were studied in laboratory experiments. During the survey period, four peaks of CLM and C. phyllocnistoides populations were observed in the growing stage of summer shoots and two peaks of CLM and C. phyllocnistoides populations, respectively, in the growing stage of fall shoots. C. phyllocnistoides is the most abundant parasitoid both in seasonal and spatial dynamics, and demonstrates a Holling type III functional response to CLM. Parasitism varied with the densities of both parasitoid and host. A 1 : 10 ratio was recorded to be an optimal proportion of C. phyllocnistoides to CLM.  相似文献

Populations of shrubs in a winter-rainfall (ca. 70 mm yr-1 desert community (Succulent Karoo), dominated by leaf succulents, showed remarkable dynamics over a 17-yr period. After a severe drought in 1979, which caused high plant mortality, perennial species number in a permanent 10 m×10 m plot doubled between 1980 and 1996, when the maximum of 41 species was recorded. Numbers of individuals of evergreen, leaf succulent shrubs also doubled over the same period, but showed fluctuations in response to dry years during the monitoring period. Detailed observations on the four dominant leaf succulent shrubs (all members of the Mesembryanthemaceae) between 1983 and 1996, showed species-specific patterns in population turnover. Mortality of all observed individuals ranged between 60% and 85%, and the proportion of the population that was recruited over this period ranged from 62% to 89%. In only one species did individuals persist throughout the monitoring period. Mean ages of individuals, excluding seedlings with lifespans of <1 yr, and individuals observed at the beginning of the monitoring period, ranged from 4.6 yr to 5.6 yr. Patterns of mortality and recruitment showed substantial differences among species and were not all attributable to rainfall patterns. Overall, the turnover of the shrub populations over the 15-yr monitoring period was remarkably high for a system of desert perennials. These unusual population patterns may explain the unique structure of leaf succulent-dominated communities in the Succulent Karoo.  相似文献

Abstract. The creation of a generic population model for the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus requires a detailed, quantified understanding of the interactions of these ticks with their biotic and abiotic environment in the different parts of their range, from the tropical regions of East Africa to the temperate regions of South Africa. The much greater seasonal variation in climatic conditions, particularly temperature, further from the equator introduces variable development rates and diapause into the life cycle. Estimates of natural temperature-dependent interstadial development periods, derived from a combination of published laboratory and field data, were applied to published data on the seasonal abundance of R.appendiculatus on three farms in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This enabled an assessment of which ticks of one stage give rise to which ticks of the next stage, from which (a) the onset and duration of diapause in unfed adults, and (b) seasonal interstadial mortality indices in the form of fc-values, could be estimated. The contribution of biotic (tick density) and abiotic (climatic) factors as predictors of mortality at each life stage was investigated by step-wise multiple regression. Density-independent mortality at the female-to-larval stage is correlated with geographically variable climatic factors, minimum temperature at two farms and minimum relative humidity at the third. The other two stages are governed by density-dependent mortality, which, it is argued, may be caused largely by the hosts' acquired resistance to ticks. As expected on theoretical grounds, this density dependence is weaker nearer to the edge of the tick's range and for the more vulnerable immature stages.  相似文献

We studied the population dynamics and reproductive biology of Caprella dilatata and Caprella equilibra in order to provide the basis for understanding the ecological role of both species in Mar del Plata Harbour. Caprellids and organisms from the fouling community were obtained by sampling in the harbour, monthly from April 2014 to March 2015. Mean density of C. dilatata was homogeneous during most of the study period (ca. 50–200 ind/100?g) and reached their maximum in May (ca. 650 ind/100?g), while C. equilibra did not show any differences during the sampling period (ca. 30 ind/100?g). Juveniles of C. dilatata reached their highest densities in May, while ovigerous females were at their maximum values in late spring, summer and early autumn, and no correlation was found between seawater temperature and monthly density. On the other hand, C. equilibra reached its maximum juvenile and ovigerous female densities in summer, and showed a positive correlation with seawater temperature. Sex-ratio was female biased in C. dilatata, but in C. equilibra it was equal between sexes. The number of eggs carried by females was positively correlated to the size in both species. The present study suggests that the population dynamics of C. equilibra are intimately related to seawater temperature, while for C. dilatata no relationship was found. Future studies of ecology and behaviour traits in caprellid species are needed in order to determine the ecological role and the environmental factors that could affect both species.  相似文献

Temporal changes in the population size of a phytophagous lady-beetle were analyzed to identify mechanisms affecting lady-beetle population dynamics at different spatial scales. The study area (15 ha) included 18 habitat patches. The major host plants were potato for first generation larvae and eggplant for second generation larvae. The habitat patches were classified into three groups according to the major host plants in each patch: P-E patches (both host plants available), P patches (potato only), and E patches (eggplant only). The winter disappearance of adults in the whole study area, and larval mortality in E patches were apparently the most important factors disturbing the overall population density. Density-dependent movement of females appeared to have the greatest stabilizing effect on the yearly fluctuation of population density. Rate of increase of female adults from the first to the second generation,R, was generally higher on eggplants in E patches than in P-E patches because the adult density of the first generation was much higher in P-E patches. The yearly fluctuation of adult density in each generation tended to be less in patches with all habitat components necessary for the full life cycle (P-E patches). However, such patches were not favorable for first generation females, as indicated by the lower rate of increase from the first to the second generation. The density and stability of lady-beetle populations is discussed in relation to habitat structure.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Bosmina longirostris in a large tropical reservoir, Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, are described. Population density showed two peaks associated with periods of high nutrient fluxes. Fecundity was always low. Two eggs per female was the maximum ever recorded. Instantaneous rates of birth, death and population growth calculated from field data using the egg ratio method are discussed. The rate of biomass change fluctuated in a regular pattern, probably linked to food availability or predation by a clupeid, Limnothrissa miodon.  相似文献

A detailed sampling programme during the ice-free season (July–September) in the oligotrophic lake Las Yeguas (Southern Spain) has shown a well-defined time lag between phytoplankton and zooplankton maximum standing stocks, the former displaying a peak (23 μgC l-1) just after the ice-melting, and the latter by the end of September (80 μgC l-1). A ratio of autotrophs to heterotrophs lower than 1 which lasted more than two thirds of the study period may suggest a high algal productivity per unit of biomass. The estimated strong top-down regulation of phytoplankton by zooplankton indicates an efficient utilization of resources. A comparative analysis between the available food supply and the critical food concentration that is necessary to maintain the population of Daphnia pulicaria (which constitutes up to 98% of the heterotrophic biomass) proves this species to be food-limited in the lake under study. To explain the dominance (and development) of such large-bodied cladoceran population, we discuss the possibility of the utilization of naked protozoan ciliates (Oligotrichidae) as a complementary high quality food source, and the exploitation of benthic resources through a coupled daily migration behaviour.  相似文献

Spalgis epius is an economically important hemipterophagous butterfly. Detailed information on the population dynamics, natural enemies, and prey range of S. epius and its association with mealybug-attendant ant species is lacking. Three years of field studies conducted at Bangalore University campus, Bengaluru, India on these aspects indicated that the population density of S. epius was greatest from June to December and least from February to May in the low land region. S. epius survived on eight prey species, which were present in different months, of which Phenacoccus indicus was recorded as a prey of S. epius for the first time. Different prey species occurred on 12 species of host plants. The occurrence of S. epius was negatively correlated with temperature and positively correlated with relative humidity and prey populations. Six mealybug-attendant ant species were associated with the larvae of S. epius. The seven general predators of S. epius adults were recorded. Knowledge on the population dynamics and a prey range of S. epius and its interaction with mealybug-attendant ant species could be helpful to using this predator as a major biocontrol agent of various species of mealybugs. This study contributed to our understanding of the population dynamics of a hemipterophagous butterfly.  相似文献
