Acidic volcanic waters are naturally occurring extreme habitats that are subject of worldwide geochemical research but have been little investigated with respect to their biology. To fill this gap, the microbial ecology of a volcanic acidic river (pH approximately equal to 0-1.6), Rio Agrio, and the recipient lake Caviahue in Patagonia, Argentina, was studied. Water and sediment samples were investigated for Fe(II), Fe(III), methane, bacterial abundances, biomass, and activities (oxygen consumption, iron oxidation and reduction). The extremely acidic river showed a strong gradient of microbial life with increasing values downstream and few signs of life near the source. Only sulfide-oxidizing and fermentative bacteria could be cultured from the upper part of Rio Agrio. However, in the lower part of the system, microbial biomass and oxygen penetration and consumption in the sediment were comparable to non-extreme aquatic habitats. To characterize similarities and differences of chemically similar natural and man-made acidic waters, our findings were compared to those from acidic mining lakes in Germany. In the lower part of the river and the lake, numbers of iron and sulfur bacteria and total biomass in sediments were comparable to those known from acidic mining lakes. Bacterial abundance in water samples was also very similar for both types of acidic water (around 10(5) mL(-1)). In contrast, Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) reduction potentials appeared to be lower despite higher biogenic oxygen consumption and higher photosynthetic activity at the sediment-water interface. Surprisingly, methanogenesis was detected in the presence of high sulfate concentrations in the profundal sediment of Lake Caviahue. In addition to supplementing microbiological knowledge on acidic volcanic waters, our study provides a new view of these extreme sites in the general context of aquatic habitats.  相似文献

The Osmunda regalis sporophyte is well organized for the storage and perpetuation of post-zygotic mutations. Techniques have been developed to detect sporophytes in which such mutations have occurred. Two populations were screened for sporophytes which are chimeras for gametophytic or recessive sporophytic lethals. The populations had different ecologies; one was in a pristine lake side bog and the other was growing in the waters of a river heavily polluted with industrial wastes. Post-zygotic mutations were detected only in the polluted river population. The level of mutational damage approximated that previously documented from chromosome studies.  相似文献

The influences of imports of nutrients and planktonic algae from the River Spree on the dynamics of phytoplankton were examined in the shallow, eutrophic Müggelsee, which has a retention time of only 42 days. Phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were measured in both the lake and its inflow from 1980–1990. On a long-term average, mean biomass as well as vitality of most dominant phytoplankton populations in the lake were not significantly different from those in the river. Nevertheless, during distinct periods the external rates of biomass change of single lake populations (due to dilution or enrichment) were as high as the lake internal ones. The import of inocula populations from the river probably induced the formation of the typical community structure in the lake. Growth and decay of phytoplankton populations in the river strongly influenced the load of dissolved nutrients and thus indirectly the dynamics of planktonic algae in the downstream lake. For example, intensive assimilation of phosphorus by riverine algae in spring intensified the P-shortage and supported possible P-limitation of algal growth in the lake at that time. In years with high vernal biomass of centric diatoms in the river, and thus diminished import of dissolved silicon, the growth of diatoms was suppressed and that of cyanobacteria was favoured in the lake during summer.  相似文献

Lake Rotoiti (North Island, New Zealand) is a deep mesotrophic lake that has declined in water quality over the last 30 years. The main river entering the lake was identified as the primary enrichment source, but its interaction with the surrounding lakewater varied with season and time of day. During winter the river was colder than the lake and penetrated 6–8 km into the main basin as an underflow. In summer the river often entered as a plunging inflow during the early morning, but it warmed during the day, and in the afternoon entered the lake as a buoyant jet that flowed directly to a nearby outlet river. From continuous temperature measurements in the inflow and lake surface it was estimated that the river plunged and penetrated the lake as an interflow or underflow for 60.2% of the year. This translated into 31% of the N and 64% of the P loading on the lake. The river also injected phytoplankton into the main basin of Lake Rotoiti, including populations of bloom-forming cyanobacteria. The underflow was the dominant term in calculating the hydraulic flushing time of the main basin, and also made a large contribution of dissolved oxygen to the subsurface waters. These complex interactions between Lake Rotoiti and its inflowing river were controlled by small temperature differences ( < 3 °C, and had wide-ranging implications in the eutrophication process.  相似文献

1. River plankton are often assumed to come from upstream lakes, but the factors controlling the movement of plankton between lakes and rivers into outflow streams are unclear. We tested the possibility that the physical structure of the littoral zone near the lake outlet (depth, presence of macrophytes) and diurnal differences in plankton composition at the lake surface influence the movement of plankton from the lake into the stream and determine their persistence downstream. 2. Zooplankton and phytoplankton biomass, community composition and mean body size were compared between two deep lakes without macrophytes at the lake edge and two shallow lakes with macrophytes at the lake edge. Samples were collected day and night on three dates, in the lake centre, in the littoral zone adjacent to the lake outlet, at the outlet and at two sites downstream in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. 3. The morphology of lake edges clearly affects the movement of lake zooplankton into outlet streams. Outlets draining deeper littoral zones had higher zooplankton biomass than shallow littoral outlets (P < 0.0001), but these differences disappeared within 50 m downstream of the lake. There was no difference in mean zooplankton body size among lake outlets or between littoral and outlet samples. However, shallow littoral zones were dominated by cyclopoid copepods and deeper littoral zones were dominated by Bosmina longirostris. In contrast, phytoplankton biomass entering the outlet was similar to that found within the lake and did not vary with lake outlet morphology. These effects were consistent across several sampling weeks and were not affected by surface zooplankton biomass changes associated with diurnal vertical migration in the lake centre. 4. A comparison with published river zooplankton data suggests that zooplankton are rapidly eliminated from shallow outlet streams (≤1 m deep) but persist in most deeper outlet rivers (≥2 m deep). Because the depth of an outlet river determines downstream zooplankton community development, the contribution of lakes to river plankton communities may be influenced by the location of each lake within the drainage basin. These findings suggest that lake and outflow physical structure influences connection strength between spatially successive habitats.  相似文献

We analysed micronuclei in brown trout Salmo trutta specimens sampled in the Trubia River, upstream and downstream of the emissions from a Spanish military factory to assess genotoxicity risks derived from military wastes. A significant exponential increase in micronuclei counts was found in fish living downstream of the military wastes with respect to fishes inhabiting upstream areas of the same river. In comparison, we only found a linear increase in micronuclei counts in a control stream where an old military factory had been demolished 6 months before sampling. This difference suggests that active discharge of armament factory wastes can directly induce micronuclei and therefore represents a genotoxic risk for the ecosystem.  相似文献

Fixed‐location, split‐beam sonar technology was used successfully to identify adult lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens as they moved upstream and downstream for spawning in the Sturgeon River, Michigan, May–June 2004. A Hydroacoustic Technology Inc. Model 241 Split‐Beam Echo Sounder operating at 200 kHz and a single 4 × 10° elliptical‐beam transducer with a near field range of 1.7 m set perpendicular to the river flow was used. Data collected from migrating lake sturgeon included direction of movement, swimming speed, range from transducer, time and date of passage, and target strength. The spawning population of lake sturgeon was estimated to be at 350–400 fish, with almost equal numbers of fish seen moving upstream as downstream. Most fish were recorded moving within the mid‐section of the river, 1.5–1.65 m deep, and swimming speeds upstream were slower than those for downstream moving fish. These results show that spilt‐beam sonar can be applied to lake sturgeon assessments, without the stress of actually handling these large, pre‐spawning fish.  相似文献

Continued study of the relationship between lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) recruitment and hydroelectric dams and operations, in a variety of river systems and habitat types is needed to improve the ability to predict and monitor impacts of the hydroelectric industry on this species. Herein, we present results of a juvenile lake sturgeon study aimed at addressing concerns over an inferred lack of recruitment resulting from spawning downstream of a hydroelectric generating station (HGS). Two years of sampling (2015 and 2016) were conducted in five sections of a 41 km long reach of the Seine River, Ontario, a lake sturgeon spawning tributary of Rainy Lake. Using an established gillnetting method, deepwater habitat was targeted to capture juvenile lake sturgeon to assess relative abundance, recruitment (cohort strength), and growth. Deepwater habitat, defined as water depths >6 m in this system, comprised only 2.1% of the wetted area in this study area. Within these habitats, a total of 331 lake sturgeon capture events were observed over the 2-years study period. The majority of the lake sturgeon catch (85%) was comprised of age-0 to age-5 individuals (both sampling years combined). Although inter-annual variation in cohort strength was apparent, each cohort between 2006 and 2016 was represented. The spatial distribution of cohorts varied among river reaches with younger individuals (age-0 and age-1) occupying reaches proximal to the Sturgeon Falls HGS, and larger, older individuals (age-2 to age-5) occupying reaches further downstream. The rarity of age-6+ individuals can likely be explained by ongoing downstream redistribution of juveniles over time, out of the Seine River and into Rainy Lake. Growth of juvenile lake sturgeon captured in the Seine River was above average relative to conspecifics from other rivers in the Hudson Bay drainage. Unfortunately, baseline data sets required to facilitate comparisons of contemporary (post-construction Sturgeon Falls HGS) versus historical (i.e. pre- Sturgeon Falls HGS) lake sturgeon recruitment, or to evaluate the influence of the Seine River Water Management Plan (2004) on lake sturgeon recruitment, are lacking. However, juvenile Lake Sturgeon are more abundant in this system than what had been surmised based on recent studies which implemented random sampling. Results indicate that juvenile lake sturgeon may reside in spawning tributaries for several years (age-0 to age-5) prior to seeking alternate habitats and highlights the value of targeted sampling (i.e. by depth) along the flow axis of rivers downstream of spawning areas when assessing lake sturgeon recruitment patterns.  相似文献

Synopsis Of a total of 377 Pristis perotteti tagged in the Lake Nicaragua-Río San Juan System, 214 (56.8% were recovered. Eighty were recovered at the original tagging site; four moved downstream the full length of the river; and 127 tagged at the source of the river were recovered in all parts of the lake. Only one was recovered in a different river system, 58 km down the coast from the main mouth of the Río San Juan.A life span of 30 years is suggested, with rapid growth (30–40 cm per year) in the first three years, slowing to about 4 or 5 cm per year in the later years of life. Maximum sizes collected were 384 cm for males, 429 cm for females, smaller than maximum lengths reported elsewhere.The lake sawfish are not physically landlocked, but individuals remain in fresh water for very long periods; parturition takes place in fresh water; all sizes are found in the lake; and it appears that this stock finds all of its ecological needs met in the lake. Individuals may spend all of their lives in fresh water, although, as a species, P. perotteti has not completely abandoned the sea, since some are known to occur in salt water. The Lake Nicaragua-Río San Juan sawfish are a discrete stock, with only limited gene flow with neighboring stocks. P. perotteti is farther along in its adaptation to fresh water, in being able both to osmoregulate and reproduce there, than other known euryhaline elasmobranchs, except for the African stingray, Dasyatis garouaensis, of the Niger-Benue System, and the completely adapted South American freshwater rays (family Potamotrygonidae).  相似文献

The Neotropics harbors a high diversity of species and several hypotheses have been proposed to account for this pattern. However, while species of forested domains are frequently studied, less is known of species from open vegetation formations occupying, altogether, a larger area than the Amazon Forest. Here we evaluate the role of historical barriers and the riverine hypothesis in the speciation patterns of small mammals by analyzing an ancient rodent lineage (Thrichomys, Hystricomorpha). Phylogenetic and biogeographic analyses were carried out with mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers to analyze the evolutionary relationships between Thrichomys lineages occurring in dry domains along both banks of the Rio São Francisco. This river is one of the longest of South America whose course and water flow have been modified by inland tectonic activities and climate changes. Molecular data showed a higher number of lineages than previously described. The T. inermis species complex with 2n = 26, FN = 48 was observed in both banks of the river showing a paraphyletic arrangement, suggesting that river crossing had occurred, from east to west. A similar pattern was also observed for the T. apereoides complex. Thrichomys speciation occurred in Late Miocene when the river followed a different course. The current geographic distribution of Thrichomys species and their phylogenetic relationships suggested the existence of frequent past connections between both banks in the middle section of the Rio São Francisco. The extensive palaeodune region found in this area has been identified as a centre of endemism of several vertebrate species and is likely to be a center of Thrichomys diversification.  相似文献

Resource partitioning between unionid mussels in a Swedish lake outlet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Partitioning of food and space resources of two dominating unionid mussel species, Anodonta piscinalis and Unio pictorum , was investigated in a South Swedish lake outlet. Differences in diurnal activities were not considered to be a mechanism for niche segregation. The two species ingested particles of almost identical size distribution indicating a high overlap in food. Mussel distribution was correlated to environmental variables including substrate properties, water depth, current velocity, and distance from the lake, the latter being a relative measure of food quality and quantity, U. pictorum dominated near the lake and in the centre of the river while A. piscinalis had its peak density ca. 500 m below the lake and was relatively more abundant along the river margins. At maximum mussel densities, which were found near the lake, a separation in space was more obvious than downstream, implying possible interspecific interactions.  相似文献

Pulsed river water events can increase nutrient levels potentially translating into enhanced primary production, phytoplankton community shifts, and bloom formation. The Bonnet Carré Spillway is a managed river diversion which can be used to redirect a significant amount of Mississippi River water into Lake Pontchartrain, reducing the risks of flood in the downstream communities during runoff seasons. We investigated nutrient enrichment and consequent changes in phytoplankton biomass, including toxic species in Lake Pontchartrain during and after a 1-month Bonne Carré Spillway opening in 2008. Water samples were collected along a 30 km transect. A freshwater plume was found to have formed by the strong river input that had limited mixing with the lake during the opening. The plume and lake water gradually mixed together after the Spillway was closed, indicated by the reduction of the horizontal salinity gradient. The river pulse increased the lake nitrate and dissolved reactive phosphorus concentrations to more than five times the lake background in the plume stations. Nutrient concentrations decreased rapidly after the Spillway closure as the plume dissipated. Diatoms and chlorophytes dominated the system during the opening. After the Spillway closure, there was a shift over time from diatom dominance to toxic cyanobacteria dominance that corresponded to more stable, warmer, and nutrient-limited water conditions. Associated toxins were present and varied over time and space. Further research on the phytoplankton assemblages on the lake is needed in subsequent, non-Spillway opening years to evaluate the impact of river water pulses on the development of these toxic cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

A thorough outlook on the effect of palm oil mill effluent (POME) final discharge towards bacterial community dynamics in the receiving river is provided in this study by using a high-throughput MiSeq. The shift of bacterial composition could be used to determine the potential bacterial indicators to indicate contamination caused by POME. This study showed that the POME final discharge did not only alter the natural physicochemical properties of the river water but also caused the reduction of bacterial diversity in the receiving river. The Chromatiaceae and Alcaligenaceae which were not detected in the upstream but were detected in the downstream part of the river are proposed as the indicator bacteria to indicate the river water contamination caused by POME final discharge. The emergence of either one or both bacteria in the downstream part of the river were shown to be carried over by the effluent. Therefore, an accurate pollution monitoring approach using bacterial indicator is expected to complement the conventional POME pollution assessment method which is currently dependent on the physicochemical properties of the final discharge. This is the first study that reported on the potential indicator bacteria for the assessment of river water contamination caused by POME final discharge.  相似文献

Despite increasing recognition of storm-induced organic carbon (C) export as a significant loss from the terrestrial C balance, little is known about the biodegradation and chemical transformation of particulate organic carbon (POC) in mountainous river systems. We combined analyses of C isotopes, solution-state 1H NMR, and lipid biomarkers with biodegradable dissolved organic C (BDOC) measurements to investigate downstream changes of POC composition and biodegradability at a mountainous, mixed land-use watershed in South Korea. Water and suspended sediment (SS) samples were collected in a forested headwater stream, a downstream agricultural stream, and two downstream rivers during peak flow periods of four storm events, using either sequential grab sampling from the headwater stream to the most downstream river within a few hours around the peak flow or sediment samplers deployed during the whole storm event. DOC concentrations exhibited relatively small changes across sites, whereas POC concentrations were highest in the agricultural stream, and tapered along downstream reaches. The δ13C and δ15N of SS in the agricultural stream were distinct from up- and downstream signatures and similar to those for erosion source soils and lake bottom sediment, although increases in radiocarbon age indicated continuous compositional changes toward the lake. 1H NMR spectra of SS and deposited sediment exhibited downstream decreases in carbohydrates and lignin but enrichment of organic structures related to microbial proteins and plant wax. The downstream sediments had more microbial n-alkanes and lipid markers indicating anthropogenic origin such as coprostanol compared to the forest soil n-alkanes dominated by plant wax. While the BDOC concentrations of filtered waters differed little between sites, the BDOC concentrations and protein- to humic-like fluorescence ratios of DOC leached from SS during a 13-day incubation were higher in downstream rivers, pointing to contribution of labile POC components to the enhanced biodegradation. Overall, inputs of microbial and anthropogenic origin, in interplay with deposition and mineralization, appear to substantially alter POC composition and biodegradability during downstream transport, raising a question on the conventional view of mountainous river systems as a passive conduit of storm pulses of POC.  相似文献

Useful plants and techniques of their cultivation were studied in and around dwelling clearings of Choco Indians in tropical rain forests of Darien, Panama. The population sampled consisted of 115 adult Chocos living at 26 sites along the banks of the Rio Chucunaque and two of its tributaries, the Rio Tuquesa and Rio Chico. The Rio Chico had a higher population density per linear mite of river bank, but less dwelling area per person was kept clear of vegetation. A map of each clearing allowed comparison of the frequency and spatial distributions of useful plants. These data are statistically treated elsewhere. A decrease in both numbers and variety of native plants occurred as commercially important plants were established on a larger scale. Creation of open niches by means of trash heaps became more definite as distance from the riverbank increased; edible plants were often growing in such locations. Present-day agricultural techniques among the Choco may illustrate their agricultural history. A comparison is made with several extant theories of early agriculture. Small-scale, more intensive gardening was noted in village clearings; groups of dwellings may thus have been a cause rather than a result of field agriculture.  相似文献

With an age of 9–12 million years (Myr) Lake Tanganyika holds the oldest and most complex species flock of cichlid fishes. It is believed to be of polyphyletic origin and rooted in nine ancient African lineages, six of which underwent diversification, while three remained monotypic. Here, the evolutionary history, route and timing of colonization were analyzed, as well as intraspecific genetic diversity of Tylochromis polylepis , the single albeit endemic representative of the tribe Tylochromini in Lake Tanganyika. The role of Tylochromis in the radiation was uncertain and the species was suggested to be either an ancient colonizer or a recent addition to the fauna. With 2.8–4.2% sequence divergence to four congeners living in Lakes Bangweulu and Mweru (Upper Congo River) as well as from Luozi River and Lake Etsotso (Lower Congo River), the species appears to be a recent colonizer, which is likely to have diverged from its riverine allies less than 510 000 years ago. The ability to enter an adaptive radiation at a highly mature stage with its densely packed species community and fine-tuned niche segregation seems remarkable. So far it was assumed that all Tanganyikan endemics evolved within the lake ecosystem by intralacustrine speciation, and that complex competitive interactions among endemics tighten the system against intruders. The intruding species can be classified as a generalist living over muddy bottom in the lake and in river estuaries. Microgeographic substructuring is suggested, possibly because of geographic segregation of breeding sites. Concerning the route of colonization, a downstream movement via one of the inflowing rivers situated in the south of Lake Tanganyika is suggested.  相似文献

The oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae has been used as a biomonitor of trace metal contamination in two Brazilian coastal systems. C. rhizophorae were collected in January 1998 from 15 stations (from 4 coastal inlets (including 1 estuary) and 1 coastal beach) near Macau, Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil, a region affected by the activities of the oil industry and salt manufacture in coastal salt ponds; oysters were also collected in September 1999 from 8 stations in the Curimatau estuary (RN), an estuary becoming increasingly affected by shrimp farming activities. C. rhizophorae is a net accumulator of trace metals and can be used as a biomonitor, the accumulated soft tissue concentrations representing integrated records of bioavailable metal over the life of the oyster. At Macau, significant differences in oyster accumulated concentrations (and hence bioavailabilities to the oyster) of Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn were found between stations; raised zinc availabilities at the coastal site are in close proximity to oil industry activities but the very high availabilities of Fe, Cu and Mn in the Rio dos Cavalos estuary originate from an unknown source. In the Curimatau estuary, bioavailabilities of Mn, Pb and Cd, but particularly of Cu and Zn, to the oysters are raised at the two most downstream sites, the only sites below the effluent of a large shrimp farming enterprise. The oysters also act as a local food source, and concentrations of Zn, Cu and Pb of some of the oysters are above typical public health recommended limits.  相似文献

The 26 specimens of the landlocked Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. from Namsen river and its tributary Melingselva river (central Norway) were studied by the method of complete parasitological examination in the period of 1997-1998. The 15 parasite species have been recovered. Ration of parasite with a direct and complex cycle is approximately equal, 6 and 9 respectively. Larval stages of parasites predominate among the parasites with a complex cycle. The parasite fauna fond in the landlocked Atlantic salmon is most similar to that in youngsters of the lake salmon (Salmo salar morpha sebago Girard) and the migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.).  相似文献

Zooplankton composition and growth in the river Marne (France)were studied on a space scale of 300 km in July 1991. There werethree distinct areas along the river: the immediate reservoir outlet(pK 652), the natural river called middle Marne (from pK 652to pK 799 downstream) and the channeled river (from pK 799 topK 975 downstream). A typical lake community, characterized both byan abundance of microcrustaceans and a high zooplanktonconcentration was found immediately downstream of the reservoir Marne(Der-Chantecocq Lake). Here, large microcrustaceans (copepods,daphnids), and large rotifers (Keratella cochlearisrobusta and Polyarthra dolichoptera-vulgaris) rapidlydisappeared, and small rotifer species (<120 m) dominated theplankton. Their populations (specially Keratella c. cochlearis)proliferated in the middle Marne as far as 100 km downstream(up to 288 ind. l-1) but were considerably reduced (20 to35 ind. l-1) where the river is channeled, algal resourcesdecline and turbidity increases.The dominance of small organisms such as rotifers, in riverplankton is assumed to be the result of fish predation on largezooplankton as well as of a short generation time which allowstheir in situ reproduction, in spite of a short residencetime of the water.  相似文献
