BACKGROUND: The gorgeous frescoes organized by the master Renaissance painter Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520) and illustrating the heavenly adventures of Cupid and Psyche were painted between 1515 and 1518 to decorate the Roman villa (now known as the Villa Farnesina) of the wealthy Sienese banker Agostino Chigi (1466-1520). Surrounding these paintings are festoons of fruits, vegetables and flowers painted by Giovanni Martini da Udine (1487-1564), which include over 170 species of plants. A deconstruction and collation of the cucurbit images in the festoons makes it possible to evaluate the genetic diversity of cucurbits in Renaissance Italy 500 years ago. FINDINGS: The festoons contain six species of Old World cucurbits, Citrullus lanatus (watermelon), Cucumis melo (melon), Cucumis sativus (cucumber), Ecballium elaterium (squirting cucumber), Lagenaria siceraria (bottle gourd) and Momordica balsamina (balsam apple), and two or three species of New World cucurbits, Cucurbita maxima, C. pepo and, perhaps, C. moschata (pumpkin, squash, gourd). Biotypic variation is of major concern in breeding for host plant resistance to insects. The existence or development of aggressive biotypes can lead to a rapid break-down of host plant resistance. Therefore the study of biotypic variation should be included in breeding programs for resistance to insects. In the present study we measured the reproduction of randomly collected females of ten different populations of the insect herbivore Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on one susceptible and two resistant cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) accessions. Significant differences between thrips populations were observed on all three cucumber accessions. None of the populations had a significantly higher reproduction than the Dutch reference population NL1. For three populations, the Dutch population NL1, a population from New Zealand (NZ), and an Italian population (IT), partial life history parameters, such as reproduction rate, developmental time and survival were determined and the relative rate of increase r
r was calculated. On all three cucumber accessions the r
r-value of population NZ was lower than of populations NL1 and IT. It is concluded that there is biotypic variation in F. occidentalis with regard to performance on cucumber plants with different levels of resistance. Wing-dimorphic, delphacid planthoppers were used to test hypotheses concerning the effects of habitat persistence and architectural complexity on the occurrence of dispersal. For reasons concerning both the durational stability of the habitat and the reduced availability of mates, selection has favored high levels of dispersal in species occupying temporary habitats. Flightlessness predominates in species occupying persistent habitats, and is promoted by a phenotypic trade-off between reproductive success and flight capability. Wings are retained in tree-inhabiting species, probably for reasons concerning the more effective negotiation of three-dimensional habitats. In contrast, flightlessness is characteristic of those species inhabiting low profile host plants. For several delphacid genera, migratory species are larger than their sedentary congeners. Because body size and fecundity are positively related in planthoppers, the large body size observed in migratory taxa may result from selection for increased fecundity in colonizing species. 相似文献

Aim To enhance our understanding of the evolutionary interactions between seed‐dispersal syndromes, life‐forms, seed size, and habitat characteristics by studying their association with the regional‐scale distributions of subtropical rain‐forest plants in the context of climatic gradients. Location South‐east Queensland, subtropical eastern Australia (152° E, 26° S). Methods We classified 250 rain‐forest sites into six floristic site‐groups based on their woody plant composition. The resulting classification was strongly associated with variation in rainfall. The distribution of species across the floristic site‐groups was used to assign 568 species to seven habitat classes (one class for ‘widespread’ species, with all other species classified according to the site‐group within which they were most frequent). Species were also classified for three other categorical life‐history factors: three dispersal syndromes based on diaspore morphology (fleshy, wind‐assisted, and unadorned); four life‐forms (trees, shrubs and small trees, tall climbers, and short and shrubby climbers); and four seed‐diameter classes (< 3 mm, ≥ 3 and < 4.5 mm, ≥ 4.5 and < 7 mm, and ≥ 7 mm). We used a basic comparative approach augmented by simple phylogenetically constrained comparisons to assess association between dispersal syndrome, seed size, life‐form, and habitat class. Results Across the rain forests of south‐east Queensland, the proportion of species with fleshy diaspores or of large stature increases with rainfall. High‐rainfall sites also have larger average seed sizes, but the difference in average seed size between high‐ and low‐rainfall sites is small compared with variation within sites. Among species, those with fleshy fruit tend to have larger seeds and to favour high‐rainfall sites. Very few small trees produce diaspores adapted for wind‐assisted dispersal. On average, species with unadorned diaspores have smaller seeds than those with fleshy diaspores. However, within sites, species with unadorned and fleshy diaspores have similar average seed sizes, and some species with unadorned diaspores from high‐rainfall habitats have extremely large seeds. Main conclusions Commonly observed associations between fleshy fruit, larger plants, larger seeds, and productive habitats are apparent within the rain‐forest flora of south‐east Queensland. However, these associations are generally weak and involve complex interactions. For example, the strong tendency for species with fleshy fruit to have larger seeds than those with unadorned diaspores concealed a significant group of species from wetter forests that produce extremely large seeds and unadorned diaspores. The most widespread species in this study tend to be large plants (particularly robust lianes) and to produce fleshy fruit, but they tend not to have relatively large seeds. The association between large seeds, large plants, fleshy fruit and productive habitats is discussed as part of an evolutionary strategy favouring fitness in populations close to carrying capacity. We review some problems with focusing on establishment chances per seed as the driver towards association between large seeds, large plants and productive rain‐forest habitats (the difficult‐establishment hypothesis). Instead we suggest that production of large, short‐lived seeds by long‐lived plants in temporally stable, closed habitats may reflect the limited evolutionary potential for strategies enhancing colonization (e.g. producing large numbers of dormant seeds), thus allowing the establishment benefits of large seeds greater selective influence (the slow‐replacement hypothesis). The association of fleshy fruit with large seeds probably reflects the difficulty of dispersing large seeds by other means (the difficult‐dispersal hypothesis). 相似文献

‘Carabidologists do it all’ (Niemelä 1996a) is a phrase with which most European carabidologists are familiar. Indeed, during the last half a century, professional and amateur entomologists have contributed enormously to our understanding of the basic biology of carabid beetles. The success of the field is in no small part due to regular European Carabidologists’ Meetings, which started in 1969 in Wijster, the Netherlands, with the 14th meeting again held in the Netherlands in 2009, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first meeting and 50 years of long-term research in the Dwingelderveld. This paper offers a subjective summary of some of the major developments in carabidology since the 1960s. Taxonomy of the family Carabidae is now reasonably established, and the application of modern taxonomic tools has brought up several surprises like elsewhere in the animal kingdom. Progress has been made on the ultimate and proximate factors of seasonality and timing of reproduction, which only exceptionally show non-seasonality. Triggers can be linked to evolutionary events and plausibly explained by the “taxon cycle” theory. Fairly little is still known about certain feeding preferences, including granivory and ants, as well as unique life history strategies, such as ectoparasitism and predation on higher taxa. The study of carabids has been instrumental in developing metapopulation theory (even if it was termed differently). Dispersal is one of the areas intensively studied, and results show an intricate interaction between walking and flying as the major mechanisms. The ecological study of carabids is still hampered by some unresolved questions about sampling and data evaluation. It is recognised that knowledge is uneven, especially concerning larvae and species in tropical areas. By their abundance and wide distribution, carabid beetles can be useful in population studies, bioindication, conservation biology and landscape ecology. Indeed, 40 years of carabidological research have provided so much data and insights, that among insects - and arguably most other terrestrial organisms - carabid beetles are one of the most worthwhile model groups for biological studies. 相似文献

1. The effects of habitat isolation, persistence, and host‐plant structure on the incidence of dispersal capability (per cent macroptery) in populations of the delphacid planthopper Toya venilia were examined throughout the British Virgin Islands. The host plant of this delphacid is salt grass Sporobolus virginicus, which grows either in undisturbed habitats (large expanses on intertidal salt flats and around the margins of salt ponds, or small patches of sparse vegetation on sand dunes along the shore), or in less persistent, disturbed habitats (managed lawns). 2. Both sexes of T. venilia were significantly more macropterous in disturbed habitats (77.1% in males, 12.5% in females) than in more persistent, undisturbed habitats (19.2% in males, < 1% in females). 3. Males exhibited significantly higher levels of macroptery (26.9 ± 7.6%) than did females (2.0 ± 1.7%), and per cent macroptery was positively density dependent for both sexes in field populations. 4. There was no evidence that the low incidence of female macroptery in a subset of island populations inhabiting natural habitats (1.7 ± 1.2%) was attributable to the effects of isolation on oceanic islands. The incidence of macroptery in British Virgin Island populations of T. venilia was not different from that observed in mainland delphacid species existing in habitats of similar duration. 5. Rather, the persistence of most salt grass habitats throughout the British Virgin Islands best explains the evolution of flight reduction in females of this island‐inhabiting delphacid. 6. Males were significantly more macropterous in populations occupying dune vegetation (37.6 ± 9.8%) than in populations occupying salt flat–pond margin habitats (7.6 ± 5.6%). By contrast, females exhibited low levels of macroptery in both dune (0%) and salt flat–pond margin (< 1%) habitats. Variation in salt‐grass structure probably underlies this habitat‐related difference in macroptery because flight‐capable males of planthoppers are better able to locate females in the sparse‐structured grass growing on dunes. This habitat‐related difference in male macroptery accounted for the generally higher level of macroptery observed in males than in females throughout the islands. 7. The importance of habitat persistence and structure in explaining the incidence of dispersal capability in T. venilia is probably indicative of the key role these two factors play in shaping the dispersal strategies of many insects. 相似文献
