Genetic parentage analyses reveal considerable diversity in alternative reproductive behaviours (e.g. sneaking) in many taxa. However, little is known about whether these behaviours vary seasonally and between populations. Here, we investigate seasonal variation in male reproductive behaviours in a population of two‐spotted gobies (Gobiusculus flavescens) in Norway. Male two‐spotted gobies guard nests, attract females and care for fertilized eggs. We collected clutches and nest‐guarding males early and late in the breeding season in artificial nests and used microsatellite markers to reconstruct parentage from a subset of offspring from each nest. We hypothesized that mating, reproductive success and sneaking should be more prevalent early in the breeding season when competition for mates among males is predicted to be higher. However, parentage analyses revealed similar values of mating, reproductive success and high frequencies of successful sneaking early (30% of nests) and late (27% of nests) in the season. We also found that multiple females with eggs in the same nest were fertilized by one or more sneaker males, indicating that some males in this population engage in a satellite strategy. We contrast our results to previous work that demonstrates low levels of cuckoldry in a population in Sweden. Our results demonstrate marked stability in both the genetic mating system and male alternative reproductive tactics over the breeding season. However, sneaking rates may vary geographically within a species, likely due to local selection influencing ecological factors encountered at different locations.  相似文献

Genetic variation in fertility of heat-stressed male mice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The damaging effects of heat stress on male fertility are evident in developing spermatozoa expressed in ejaculates 18-28 days post-stress in mice. Our objectives were to: (1) assess genetic variation in fertility of heat-stressed male mice and (2) determine response to selection for fertility after heat stress in male mice. Mature male mice were exposed to heat stress (35+/-1 degrees C; n=50) or control (21+/-1 degrees C; n=10) conditions for 24h (day 0) and then hemicastrated for tissue collection. Two periods of mating tests followed, period 1 (from days 3 to 11) when no reductions in fertility were anticipated, and period 2 (days 18-26) when variation in fertility was expected. Period 2 pregnant females were sacrificed in late gestation. Males were indexed by multiplying overall mean ovulation rate by pre-implantation survival and number of pregnant period 2 mates. The five highest and five lowest ranking males were identified as heat stress resistant and susceptible, respectively. Resistant males were 61.2units superior in the index, 57.5% greater in pregnancy rate, and 57.6 total fetuses greater than susceptible males. Progeny of resistant sires were superior to progeny of susceptible sires in estimated breeding value by 4.5units for the index, 4.1% for pregnancy rate, and 5.2 fetuses (P<0.0001). Heritability estimates for the index, pregnancy rate, and number of fetuses ranged from 0.09 to 0.13, suggesting male fertility following heat stress is heritable and responds to selection.  相似文献

Negative frequency-dependent sexual selection maintains striking polymorphisms in secondary sexual traits in several animal species. Here, we test whether frequency of beardedness modulates perceived attractiveness of men''s facial hair, a secondary sexual trait subject to considerable cultural variation. We first showed participants a suite of faces, within which we manipulated the frequency of beard thicknesses and then measured preferences for four standard levels of beardedness. Women and men judged heavy stubble and full beards more attractive when presented in treatments where beards were rare than when they were common, with intermediate preferences when intermediate frequencies of beardedness were presented. Likewise, clean-shaven faces were least attractive when clean-shaven faces were most common and more attractive when rare. This pattern in preferences is consistent with negative frequency-dependent selection.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   The ability to age individual birds visually in the field based on plumage variation could provide important demographic and biogeographical information. We describe an approach to infer ages from a distribution of plumage scores of free-ranging male Kirtland's Warblers ( Dendroica kirtlandii ). We assigned ages to males using a scoring scheme (0–12 points) based on variation in plumage coloration, brightness, and contrast on three dorsal and three ventral body regions presumed to be age-related. The distribution of total additive plumage scores for 875 breeding males was normally distributed, indicating no distinct age classes. Thus, we developed provisional plumage-age classes of second year (SY) and after second-year (ASY), and compared them to the total plumage scores of a smaller subsample of known age ( N = 92) and minimum age ( N = 143) males. Plumage scores of known-age male Kirtland's Warblers increased nonlinearly with age ( r s= 0.67), but with some overlap. The median plumage score for SY males (median = 5.0) was significantly lower than for third-year (TY) males (median = 7.0) and after third-year (3 year and older) males (median = 8.0), indicating that the plumage of male Kirtland's Warblers becomes more distinctive and brighter with age. Linear discriminant function analysis differentiated ASY male Kirtland's Warbler from SY males with 78.3% accuracy. Investigators could use the distribution of plumage scores and approximate age structures to document changes in male age structure during colonization, use, and abandonment of habitats by Kirtland's Warblers or other species that occupy early successional habitats. Aging free-ranging birds based on a plumage scoring scheme may be especially critical for demographic studies of less-studied species where it is unlikely that a banding program will be initiated, but where plumage-age inferences or management decisions must be made.  相似文献

Male greater sac-winged bats, Saccopteryx bilineata, use hovering flights to court females in their harem territory. While hovering, males fan a fragrant perfume from sac-like organs in the wing membrane towards the females. Each afternoon, males renew the perfumes of their wing sacs during a stereotypical and time-consuming behavioural sequence, which includes blending secretions from genital and gular glands. I investigated whether male perfume-blending behaviour varies between the mating and the nonmating season, and whether successful males, those with large harems, have different patterns of perfume blending than less successful males. I measured variation in perfume-blending behaviour in 21 adult males. The pattern of perfume blending was not significantly different between the mating and the nonmating season. However, the time at which perfume blending began and terminated differed between seasons. During the mating season, males spent about the same time cleaning their wing sacs during phase I of perfume blending, irrespective of the number of females in their harem. During phase II, males with large harems spent significantly less time refilling and blending perfume than males with small harems. In addition, males with large harems took up fewer droplets of secretion from the genital region. Overall, male-male interactions were rare during perfume blending, and the decrease in duration in phase II was not attributable to more disturbance in large harems. There was also no evidence that males prevented each other from transferring secretions into their wing sacs. Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Seasonal variation in fecal testosterone levels in free-ranging male Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) was examined with reference to their dominance rank and age class. Six adult (>or=7 years old, three higher-ranking and three lower-ranking) and four adolescent (5-6 years old, two higher-ranking and two lower-ranking) males were selected as target animals. Fecal samples of these males were collected during the first 3-5 days of each month and analyzed by the method developed by Barrett et al. [Primates 43:29-39, 2002 b]. Testosterone levels varied significantly across the 12 months, and were highest in the early and middle parts of the mating season (i.e., October and November). Higher-ranking adult males displayed a peak testosterone level in October, whereas lower-ranking adults had no clear peak in the mating season. Such a difference in testosterone peaks in males could provide higher-ranking males more opportunities to fertilize females at first ovulation in the mating season than lower-ranking males.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate any seasonal (spring, summer, autumn and winter) changes in haematological parameters in the blood of Tinca tinca measuring the number of red blood cells (RBC), haematocrit, white blood cells, and total plasma proteins. The results show significant changes in RBC and haematocrit in males comparing spring and summer with autumn and winter, whereas in females the RBC remained constant for all 4 seasons but the haematocrit decreased in autumn and winter compared to spring and summer. The white blood cells of male and female animals were significantly lower in spring and winter compared to summer and autumn. In male fish total protein contents significantly decreased in autumn and winter compared to spring and summer, whereas in females protein output significantly decreased in winter compared to the other seasons. The results indicate marked seasonal variation in the blood of male and female Tinca tinca. This variation may play a important protective role for the survival of the animals.  相似文献

The occurrence of intra-sexual variation in reproduction is a widespread phenomenon in teleosts. One such form of variation consists in the occurrence of alternative male types: males that invest resources in mate attraction and males that exploit the investment of the former males, by trying to sneak fertilizations during spawning. These alternative reproductive tactics can be classified according to their plasticity during the life span of the individuals (i.e., fixed vs. sequential vs. reversible). Furthermore, the differences between morphs within a given species may involve a set of different traits, including reproductive behavior, the differentiation of male morphological traits, and the patterns of gonad tissue allocation and the differentiation of gonadal accessory glands. In this paper, we review the available data on four species exhibiting different types of intra-sexual plasticity in reproduction that have been studied in our lab. The data on the proximate mechanisms, androgens and forebrain arginine-vasotocin (AVT), underlying these alternative tactics suggest that between-morph differences in androgen levels, especially in 11-ketotestosterone, are especially present in species where the alternative male types have evolved morphological traits that are tactic-specific (i.e., sexual polymorphisms) and that differences in AVT appear to be related to between-morph differences in the expression of courtship behavior. Therefore, this comparative approach leads us to propose that the different endocrine systems are involved in the differentiation of different sets of traits that make up alternative phenotypes, and that the differentiation of alternative tactics is not controlled by a single endocrine system (e.g., androgens).  相似文献

The theory of constrained sex allocation posits that when a fraction of females in a haplodiploid population go unmated and thus produce only male offspring, mated females will evolve to lay a female-biased sex ratio. I examined evidence for constrained sex ratio evolution in the parasitic hymenopteran Uscana semifumipennis. Mated females in the laboratory produced more female-biased sex ratios than the sex ratio of adults hatching from field-collected eggs, consistent with constrained sex allocation theory. However, the male with whom a female mated affected her offspring sex ratio, even when sperm was successfully transferred, suggesting that constrained sex ratios can occur even in populations where all females succeed in mating. A positive relationship between sex ratio and fecundity indicates that females may become sperm-limited. Variation among males occurred even at low fecundity, however, suggesting that other factors may also be involved. Further, a quantitative genetic experiment found significant additive genetic variance in the population for the sex ratio of offspring produced by females. This has only rarely been demonstrated in a natural population of parasitoids, but is a necessary condition for sex ratio evolution. Finally, matings with larger males produced more female-biased offspring sex-ratios, suggesting positive selection on male size. Because the great majority of parasitic hymenoptera are monandrous, the finding of natural variation among males in their capacity to fertilize offspring, even after mating successfully, suggests that females may often be constrained in the sex allocation by inadequate number or quality of sperm transferred.  相似文献

In most cases (80.6%), coefficients of variation of body height fall in a narrow range, between 3 and 3.9. Averages calculated for regional, racial and national groups or for successive periods may differ significantly, nevertheless they do not exceed these limits. There is no relationship with environmental, economic and social conditions and the most probable hypothesis is that body height relative variation is stable characteristic of Homo sapiens, dependent on some genotypic traits common to all populations.  相似文献

The induction and rejoining of gamma-ray-induced DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) were measured in the spermatogenic cells of mice using the alkaline elution technique. The animals were injected with [3H]thymidine and sacrificed on subsequent days to examine selectively cohorts of radiolabeled cells in the successive stages of maturation. A significantly increased frequency of SSB was observed in the unirradiated early spermatocytes and late spermatids, associated with genetic recombination and chromatin compaction, respectively. The frequency of SSBs induced by irradiation of animals in vivo remained constant from the early spermatocyte through mid-spermatid stages and decreased significantly only after the cells matured to the late spermatid stage. The frequency of SSBs after in vitro irradiation of testicular cell suspensions also decreased as round spermatids matured to late spermatids. Such decreases for both modes of irradiation may result from maturation-dependent alterations in chromatin in late spermatids, such as condensation and replacement of histones with protamines, rather than from changes in oxygen tension. Rejoining of SSBs in vivo was efficient in the spermatocytes and early spermatids but declined in late spermatids. Possible reasons for the discrepancy between the greater number of unrepaired lesions and lower susceptibility to mutation induction in late spermatids than in round spermatids are discussed.  相似文献

We have used a quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping approach to study the genetic basis of differences between two Drosophila virilis strains representing extreme phenotypes in two song characters, the number of pulses in a pulse train (PN) and the length of a pulse train (PTL). Variation in these characters among 520 F2 males was studied by single-marker analysis and composite interval mapping (CIM) using a recombination linkage map constructed for 26 microsatellite markers. In single-marker analysis, two adjacent microsatellite markers on the third chromosome, msat19 and vir84 explained 13.8 and 12.4% of the variation in PN and 9.9 and 6.5% of the variation in PTL, respectively. CIM analysis revealed significant QTLs affecting PN, located on the X and the second, third and fourth chromosome of D. virilis, while variation in PTL was attributable to QTLs located only on the third chromosome.  相似文献

Sex allocation in social insects has become a general modelin tests of inclusive fitness theory, sex-ratio theory, andparent-offspring conflict. Several studies have shown that colonysex ratios are often bimodally distributed, with some coloniesproducing mainly females and others mainly males. Sex specializationmay result from workers assessing their relatedness to malebrood versus female brood, relative to the average worker-relatednessasymmetry in other colonies of their population. Workers thenadjust the sex ratio in their own interest This hypothesis assumesthat workers can recognize the sex of the brood in their colonyand selectively eliminate males. We compared the primary sexratio (at the egg stage) and secondary sex ratio (reproductivepupae and adults) of colonies in the ant Pheidole pallidula. There was a strong bimodal distribution of secondary sex ratios, with most colonies producing mainly reproductives of one sex.In contrast, there was no evidence of a bimodal distributionof primary sex ratios. The proportion of haploid eggs producedby queens was 0.35 in early spring and decreased to about 0.1in summer. Male eggs also were present in virtually all fieldcolonies sampled in July, although eggs laid at this time ofyear never give rise to males. All male brood is, therefore, selectively eliminated beginning in July and continue to beeliminated through the rest of the year. Finally, the populationsex-ratio investment was female-biased. Together, these resultsare consistent with the hypothesis that workers control thesecondary sex ratio by selectively eliminating male brood inabout half the colonies, perhaps those with high relatednessasymmetry.[Behav Ecol 7: 292–298 (1996)]  相似文献
