Soybean { Glycine max (L.) Merr. ev. Essex} was grown from seed in a greenhouse under ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280–320 nm) radiation supplied by filtered FS-40 sunlamps. On a weighted, total daily dose basis these plants received either 0 (control) or 2875 effective J m−2 day−1 UV-BBE. When weighted with the generalized plant action spectrum (Caldwell 1971), this simulated the solar ultraviolet-B irradiance expected to occur at College Park, Maryland, USA (39°N) in the event the global stratospheric ozone column is reduced by 23%. The effects of ultraviolet radiation on the photosynthetic recovery from water stress were measured with an infrared gas analyzer. These effects were examined in plants which were either well-watered or previously preconditioned to water stress, during two distinct phenological stages of development. During the early stages of soybean growth, enhanced levels of UV-B reduced net photosynthesis by 25%, and water stress also reduced photosynthesis to nearly the same extent (by 20%). The combination of these two stresses resulted in smaller biomass than that produced by plants exposed to either stress independently. Photosynthesis in older, larger plants was much more sensitive to water stress and was reduced by as much as 50–60% in non-preconditioned plants. Although non-irradiated, non-preconditioned (control) plants recovered to only within 60% of their prestressed value, preconditioned plants recovered to within 70–80% during the 3 day recovery period. Both water stress and UV-B radiation affected non-stomatal conductance, while stomatal conductance was primarily affected by water stress.  相似文献

Arabidopsis thaliana grown in a light regime that included ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation (6 kJ m−2 d−1) had similar light-saturated photosynthetic rates but up to 50% lower stomatal conductance rates, as compared to plants grown without UV-B radiation. Growth responses of Arabidopsis to UV-B radiation included lower leaf area (25%) and biomass (10%) and higher UV-B absorbing compounds (30%) and chlorophyll content (52%). Lower stomatal conductance rates for plants grown with UV-B radiation were, in part, due to lower stomatal density on the adaxial surface. Plants grown with UV-B radiation had more capacity to down regulate photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) as shown by up to 25% lower φPSII and 30% higher non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence under saturating light. These contributed to a smaller reduction in the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (F v/F m), greater dark-recovery of F v/F m, and higher light-saturated carbon assimilation and stomatal conductance and transpiration rates after a four-hour high light treatment for plants grown with UV-B radiation. Plants grown with UV-B were more tolerant to a 12 day drought treatment than plants grown without UV-B as indicated by two times higher photosynthetic rates and 12% higher relative water content. UV-B-grown plants also had three times higher proline content. Higher tolerance to drought stress for Arabidopsis plants grown under UV-B radiation may be attributed to both increased proline content and decreased stomatal conductance. Growth of Arabidopsis in a UV-B-enhanced light regime increased tolerance to high light exposure and drought stress.  相似文献

Ozone, leaf age and water stress each affected leaf conductance in soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr. Hodgson], but there were no interactions among these factors. Exposure to increased concentrations of O3 (0.01, 0.05, 0.09. and 0.13 μl l−1) resulted in linear declines in abaxial and adaxial conductances in leaves of all ages. There were no differences in relative response to O3 between the two leaf surfaces. For well-watered plants, water use efficiency also decreased with exposure to increased O3 concentrations (water-stressed plants were not tested). Abaxial conductance increased as leaves aged from 4 to 10 days and then declined with further aging. Adaxial conductance decreased with all increases in leaf age beyond 4 days, and the ratio of abaxial/adaxial conductance increased continuously throughout the leaf lifespan. During water-stress cycles (water withheld for 2–3 days) leaves of water-stressed plants had lower conductances than those from well-watered plants, and there was no difference in relative response between abaxial and adaxial stomata.  相似文献

Abstract. The objective of the present work was to study the effect of nitrogen deficiency on drought sensitivity of tall fescue plants. The authors compared photosynthetic and stomatal behaviour of plants grown at either high (8 mol m−3) or low (0.5 mol m−3) nitrogen levels during a drought cycle followed by rehydration. Other processes investigated were stomatal and non-stomatal inhibition of leaf photosynthesis, water use efficiency and leaf rolling. Plants were grown in pots in controlled conditions on expanded clay. A Wescor in situ hygrometer placed on the leaf base outside the assimilation chamber permitted, simultaneously to leaf gas exchange measurements, monitoring of leaf water potential. Drought was imposed by withholding water from the pot. CO2 uptake and stomatal conductance decreased and leaves started to roll at a lower leaf water potential in the high-N than in the low-N grown plants. Stomatal inhibition of leaf photosynthesis seemed larger in the low-N than in the high-N plants. Water-use efficiency increased more in the high-N than in the low-N grown plants during the drought. The decrease of photosynthesis was largely reversible after rehydration in low-N but not in high-N leaves. The authors suggest that low-N plants avoid water deficit rather than tolerate it.  相似文献

The interaction of CO2 enrichment and drought on water status and growth of pea plants was investigated. Pisum sativum L. (cv. Alaska) plants were grown from seeds in growth chambers using 350 and 675 μl I1 CO2, a photon flux density of 600 μmol M-2 S-1, a 16 h photoperiod and a temperature regime of 20/14°C. The drought treatment was started at the beginning of branch initiation and lasted for 9 or 11 days. The water status of the plants was monitored daily by measuring total leaf water potential and stomatal conductance. The total leaf water potential of well-watered plants was not affected by the CO2 level. Under draughting conditions total leaf water potential decreased, with a slower decrease under the high CO2 regime, due, at least in part, to reduced stomatal conductance. Upon rewatering, total leaf water potential and stomatal conductance recovered within one day. High CO2 counteracted the reduction in height and, to some extent, leaf area that developed in low CO2 unwatered plants. Additional CO2 had no effect on branch number and did not prevent the complete inhibition of branch development that resulted from drought stress. Removing the drought conditions resulted in a rapid recovery of the internal water status and also a rapid recovery of most, but not all, plant growth parameters.  相似文献

Current models of leaf water enrichment predict that the differences between isotopic enrichment of water at the site of evaporation (Δe) and mean lamina leaf water enrichment (ΔL) depend on transpiration rates ( E ), modulated by the scaled effective length ( L ) of water isotope movement in the leaf. However, variations in leaf parameters in response to changing environmental conditions might cause changes in the water path and thus L . We measured the diel course of ΔL for 18O and 2H in beech seedlings under well-watered and water-limited conditions. We applied evaporative enrichment models of increasing complexity to predict Δe and ΔL, and estimated L from model fits. Water-limited plants showed moderate drought stress, with lower stomatal conductance, E and stem water potential than the control. Despite having double E , the divergence between Δe and ΔL was lower in well-watered than in water-limited plants, and thus, L should have changed to counteract differences in E . Indeed, L was about threefold higher in water-limited plants, regardless of the models used. We conclude that L changes with plant water status far beyond the variations explained by water content and other measured variables, thus limiting the use of current evaporative models under changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Coffea canephora plants (clone INCAPER-99) were submitted to low N (LN) or high N (HN) applications and two watering regimes (daily irrigation and irrigation every 5 days for a month). Although water potential was not altered significantly by N, HN plants showed higher relative water content than did LN plants under water deficit. Only HN plants exhibited some ability for osmotic adjustment. Plants from both N treatments increased their cell wall rigidity under drought, with a more pronounced augmentation in HN plants. In well-watered plants, carbon assimilation rate increased with increasing N while stomatal conductance did not respond to N supply. Under drought conditions, carbon assimilation decreased by 68-80% compared to well-watered plants, whereas stomatal conductance and transpiration rate declined by 35% irrespective of the N applications. Stable carbon isotope analysis, combined with leaf gas exchange measurements, indicated that regardless of the watering treatments, N increased the long-term water use efficiency through changes in carbon assimilation with little or no effect on stomatal behaviour.  相似文献

The relationships between the vulnerability of stem xylem to cavitation, stomatal conductance, stomatal density, and leaf and stem water potential were examined in six hybrid poplar (P38P38, Walker, Okanese, Northwest, Assiniboine and Berlin) and balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) clones. Stem xylem cavitation resistance was examined with the Cavitron technique in well-watered plants grown in the greenhouse. To investigate stomatal responses to drought, plants were subjected to drought stress by withholding watering for 5 (mild drought) and 7 (severe drought) days and to stress recovery by rewatering severely stressed plants for 30 min and 2 days. The clones varied in stomatal sensitivity to drought and vulnerability to stem xylem cavitation. P38P38 reduced stomatal conductance in response to mild stress while the balsam poplar clone maintained high leaf stomatal conductance under more severe drought stress conditions. Differences between the severely stressed clones were also observed in leaf water potentials with no or relatively small decreases in Assiniboine, P38P38, Okanese and Walker. Vulnerability to drought-induced stem xylem embolism revealed that balsam poplar and Northwest clones reached loss of conductivity at lower stem water potentials compared with the remaining clones. There was a strong link between stem xylem resistance to cavitation and stomatal responsiveness to drought stress in balsam poplar and P38P38. However, the differences in stomatal responsiveness to mild drought suggest that other drought-resistant strategies may also play a key role in some clones of poplars exposed to drought stress.  相似文献

Abstract Nine populations of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) were grown for 12 weeks with supplemental application of 13.3 kJ m−2 d−1 ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation under controlled environmental conditions. Drought was applied during the last four weeks of the experiment. Under well-watered conditions, UV-B decreased white clover growth on average by 20%. Cultivars bred for agricultural performance were sensitive to UV-B, while slow-growing ecotypes were UV-B-tolerant. After four weeks of water stress, there were no significant population differences in UV-B responsiveness. UV-B sensitivity decreased with increasing exposure to drought and with longer duration of UV-B irradiation, suggesting that the direction and extent of the UV-B 3× drought interaction depends on the duration of stress. The population comparisons indicate that low constitutive growth rate and adaptation to other forms of stress may be related to UV-B tolerance under well-watered conditions, but not during extended periods of drought.  相似文献

Leaf water potentials below threshold values result in reduced stomatal conductance (gs). Stomatal closure at low leaf water potentials may serve to protect against cavitation of xylem. Possible control of gs by leaf water potential or hydraulic conductance was tested by drying the rooting medium in four herbaceous annual species until gs was reduced and then lowering the [CO2] to determine whether gs and transpiration rate could be increased and leaf water potential decreased and whether hydraulic conductance was reduced at the resulting lower leaf water potential. In all species, low [CO2] could reverse the stomatal closure because of drying despite further reductions in leaf water potential, and the resulting lower leaf water potentials did not result in reductions in hydraulic conductance. The relative sensitivity of gs to internal [CO2] in the leaves of dry plants of each species averaged three to four times higher than in leaves of wet plants. Two species in which gs was reputed to be insensitive to [CO2] were examined to determine whether high leaf to air water vapor pressure differences (D) resulted in increased stomatal sensitivity to [CO2]. In both species, stomatal sensitivity to [CO2] was indeed negligible at low D, but increased with D, and low [CO2] partly or fully reversed closure caused by high D. In no case did low leaf water potential or low hydraulic conductance during drying of the air or the rooting medium prevent low [CO2] from increasing gs and transpiration rate.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi alleviate drought stress in their host plants via the direct uptake and transfer of water and nutrients through the fungal hyphae to the host plants. To quantify the contribution of the hyphae to plant water uptake, a new split-root hyphae system was designed and employed on barley grown in loamy soil inoculated with Glomus intraradices under well-watered and drought conditions in a growth chamber with a 14-h light period and a constant temperature (15 degrees C; day/night). Drought conditions were initiated 21 days after sowing, with a total of eight 7-day drying cycles applied. Leaf water relations, net photosynthesis rates, and stomatal conductance were measured at the end of each drying cycle. Plants were harvested 90 days after sowing. Compared to the control treatment, the leaf elongation rate and the dry weight of the shoots and roots were reduced in all plants under drought conditions. However, drought resistance was comparatively increased in the mycorrhizal host plants, which suffered smaller decreases in leaf elongation, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and turgor pressure compared to the non-mycorrhizal plants. Quantification of the contribution of the arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae to root water uptake showed that, compared to the non-mycorrhizal treatment, 4 % of water in the hyphal compartment was transferred to the root compartment through the arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae under drought conditions. This indicates that there is indeed transport of water by the arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae under drought conditions. Although only a small amount of water transport from the hyphal compartment was detected, the much higher hyphal density found in the root compartment than in the hyphal compartment suggests that a larger amount of water uptake by the arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae may occur in the root compartment.  相似文献

This study used nine populations of Trifolium repens L. (white clover) to investigate possible relationships between plant morphological attributes and responses to ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. Plants were exposed to 0 or 13.3 kJ·m(-2) ·day(-1) UV-B for 12 weeks. Drought was applied in parallel to these treatments during the last 4 weeks of the experiment to test whether limited moisture availability would alter morphological UV-B responses. UV-B affected plant morphology under well-watered conditions, reducing leaf size by 15%, leaf number by 5% and stolon elongation by 19%. The number of leaf primordia in the apical bud was decreased by 4% under UV-B, and by 12% under drought. In drought-exposed plants, leaf size was reduced by 50%, leaf number by 30% and stolon elongation by 60%. In addition, drought reduced specific leaf area (SLA) by 33% and increased leaf percentage dry mass (PDM) by 40%. UV-B-induced reduction in plant biomass in the T. repens populations was associated with higher plant productivity and this was further linked to larger leaf size as well as to lower PDM. In conclusion, the findings suggest that morphological attributes conferring fast potential growth under productive conditions carry a cost in the form of lower biomass accumulation under UV-B.  相似文献

A technique for studying variation in the accumulation of abscisicacid (ABA) in response to drought stress is described. Two experiments, each testing 26 spring wheat genotypes, were carried out usingpot grown plants in controlled environment cabinets with nutrientsolution culture, though the results of only one experimentare described in detail. Plants were subjected to water stressby withholding water as the fifth or sixth leaf on the mainstem was emerging. Two stressed plants of each genotype wereharvested 5 and 7 days after the treatment commenced and measurementsof leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and ABA concentrationwere taken. There was considerable genotypic variation in the rate at whichwater potential decreased, partly explained by variation inplant size. Inia 66 (a genotype common to both experiments)had consistently much lower water potentials than the othergenotypes. Stomatal conductances of all genotypes decreasedrapidly and after 5 and 7 days they were negatively correlatedwith the changes in water potential. ABA concentrations varied considerably between genotypes afterboth 5 and 7 days without water, the variation being associatedwith genotypic differences in water potential on these occasions. The overall relationship between ABA concentration and waterpotential was highly significant. Significant differences betweenthe slopes of the regressions for individual genotypes werefound. The cultivar Sirius accumulated the most ABA at any waterpotential and Pelissier, Wascana and Hybrid 46 accumulated theleast. The significance for drought resistance of variation in ABAaccumulation is discussed. Triticum aestivum L. ABA, wheat, absasic acid, leaf water potential, stomatal conductance  相似文献

During the grain filling period we followed diurnal courses in leaf water potential (ψ1), leaf osmotic potential (ψπ), transpiration (E), leaf conductance to water vapour transfer (g) and microclimatic parameters in field-grown spring barley (Hordeum distichum L. cv. Gunnar). The barley crop was grown on a coarse textured sandy soil at low (50 kg ha−1) or high (200 kg ha−1) levels of potassium applied as KCl. The investigation was undertaken at full irrigation or under drought. Drought was imposed at the beginning of the grain filling period. Leaf conductance and rate of transpiration were higher in the flag leaf than in the leaves of lower insertion. The rate of transpiration of the awns on a dry weight basis was of similar magnitude to that of the flag leaves. On clear days the rate of transpiration of fully watered barley plants was at a high level during most part of the day. The transpiration only decreased at low light intensities. The rate of transpiration was high despite leaf water potentials falling to rather low values due to high evaporative demands. In water stressed plants transpiration decreased and midday depression of transpiration occurred. Normally, daily accumulated transpirational water loss was lower in high K leaves than in low K leaves and generally the bulk water relations of the leaves were more favourable in high K plants than in low K plants. The factorial dependency of the flag leaf conductances on leaf water potential, light intensity, leaf temperature, and leaf-to-air water vapour concentration difference (ΔW) was analysed from a set of field data. From these data, similar sets of microclimatic conditions were classified, and dependencies of leaf conductance on the various environmental parameters were ascertained. The resulting mathematical functions were combined in an empirical simulation model. The results of the model were tested against other sets of measured data. Deviations between measured and predicted leaf conductance occurred at low light intensities. In the flag leaf, water potentials below-1.6 MPa reduced the stomatal apertures and determined the upper limit of leaf conductance. In leaves of lower insertion level conductances were reduced already at higher leaf water potentials. Leaf conductance was increased hyperbolically as photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) increased from darkness to full light. Leaf conductance as a function of leaf temperature followed an optimum curve which in the model was replaced by two linear regression lines intersecting at the optimum temperature of 23.4°C. Increasing leaf-to-air water vapour concentration difference caused a linear decrease in leaf conductance. Leaf conductances became slightly more reduced by lowered water potentials in the low K plants. Stomatal closure in response to a temperature change away from the optimum was more sensitive in high K plants, and also the decrease in leaf conductance under the influence of lowered ambient humidity proceeded with a higher sensitivity in high K plants. Thus, under conditions which favoured high conductances increase of evaporative demand caused an about 10% larger decrease in leaf conductance in the high K plants than in the low K plants. Stomatal sizes and density in the flag leaves differed between low and high K plants. In plants with partially open stomata, leaf conductance, calculated from stomatal pore dimensions, was up to 10% lower in the high K plants than in the low K plants. A similar reduction in leaf conductance in high K plants was measured porometrically. It was concluded that the beneficial effect of K supply on water use efficiency reported in former studies primarily resulted from altered stomatal sizes and densities.  相似文献

Soybeans Glycine max (L.) cv. Essex were hydroponically grown in a greenhouse at 2 levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation (0 and 2 500 J m−1 day−1 biologically effective UV-B radiation) and 4 levels of P (6.5, 13, 26 and 52 μ M ). Plants were grown in each treatment combination to the complete expansion of the 4th trifoliolate leaf. UV-B radiation and reduced P supply generally decreased plant height, leaf area and total biomass, but increased specific leaf weight and flavonoid content (measured as absorbance of methanolic extracts). Although both UV-B radiation and low P supply produced deleterious effects on plant biomass, the effects were non-additive. The combination of UV-B and the lowest P level (6.5 μ M ) had no effect on total biomass or leaf area. This was at least partially due to the accumulation of flavonoids and leaf thickening. The results show that the sensitivity of soybean to UV-B radiation is dependent upon plant P supply. Plants experiencing P deficiency are less sensitive to UV-B than plants at optimum P levels.  相似文献

The possible mechanism(s) by which supplemental UV-B radiation alleviates the adverse effects of summer drought in Mediterranean pines (Petropoulou et al. 1995) were investigated with seedlings of Pinus pinea. Plants received ambient or ambient plus supplemental UV-B radiation (biologically equivalent to a 15% ozone depletion over Patras, 38.3° N, 29.1° E) and natural precipitation or additional irrigation. Treatments started on 1 February, 1994 and lasted up to the end of the dry period (29 September). In well-watered plants, UV-B radiation had no influence on photosystem II photochemical efficiency and biomass accumulation. Water stressed plants suffered from needle loss and reduced photosystem II photochemical efficiency during the summer. These symptoms, however, were less pronounced in plants receiving supplemental UV-B radiation, resulting in higher total biomass at plant harvest. Laboratory tests showed that enhanced UV-B radiation did not improve the tolerance of photosystem II against drought, high light, high temperature and oxidative stress. Enhanced UV-B radiation, however, improved the water economy of water stressed plants, as judged by measurements of needle relative water content. In addition, it caused an almost two-fold increase of cuticle thickness. No such UV-B radiation effects were observed in well-watered pines. The results indicate that the combination of water stress and UV-B radiation may trigger specific responses, enabling the plants to avoid excessive water loss and, thereby, maintain a more efficient photosynthetic apparatus during the summer. The extent of this apparently positive UV-B radiation effect would depend on the amount of summer precipitation. Interaction of water supply and N in wheat   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6       下载免费PDF全文

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of N nutrition and water stress on stomatal behavior and CO2 exchange rate in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Olaf). Wheat plants were grown hydroponically with high (100 milligrams per liter) and low (10 milligrams per liter) N. When plants were 38 days old, a 24-day water stress cycle was begun. A gradual increase in nutrient solution osmotic pressure from 0.03 to 1.95 mega Pascals was achieved by incremental additions of PEG-6,000. Plants in both N treatments adjusted osmotically, although leaf water potential was consistently lower and relative water content greater for low N plants in the first half of the stress cycle. Leaf conductance of high N plants appeared greater than that of low N plants at high water potentials, but showed greater sensitivity to reductions in water potential as indicated by earlier stomatal closure during the stress cycle. The apparent greater stomatal sensitivity of high N plants was associated with a curvilinear relationship between leaf conductance and leaf water potential; low N plants exhibited more of a threshold response. Trends in [CO2]INT throughout the stress cycle indicated nonstomatal effects of water stress on CO2 exchange rate were greater in high N plants. Although estimates of [CO2]INT were generally lower in high N plants, they were relatively insensitive to leaf water potential-induced changes in leaf conductance. In contrast, [CO2]INT of low N plants dropped concomitantly with leaf conductance at low leaf water potentials. Oxygen response of CO2 exchange rate for both treatments was affected less by reductions in water potential than was CO2 exchange rate at 2.5% O2, suggesting that CO2 assimilation capacity of the leaves was affected more by reductions in leaf water potential than were processes related to photorespiration.  相似文献

An application of stable carbon isotope analysis to the mechanistic interpretation of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) effects on growth inhibition is described that is particularly useful for small plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana that are not well suited for gas exchange studies. Many investigators use tissue δ13C, relative abundance of 13C and 12C, as a proxy for water use efficiency and as an indicator of environmental effects on stomatal behaviour and on photosynthesis during growth. Discrimination against 13C is enhanced by both high stomatal conductance and damage to photosynthetic machinery. Because the thinning of the stratospheric ozone layer is permitting more UV-B to enter the biosphere, the mechanisms of action of UV-B radiation on plants are of particular current interest. Arabidopsis thaliana wild-type Landsberg erecta (L er ) and the UV-B-sensitive mutant fah I , deficient in UV-absorbing sinapate esters, were grown in a controlled environment and exposed to UV-BBE doses of 0 or 6–7 kJ m−2 day−1. UV-B exposure decreased dry matter production and δ13C in both genotypes, but growth inhibition was generally greater in fah I than in L er . The fah I mutant also had less leaf greenness than L er . Changes in leaf tissue δ13C were detected before growth inhibition and were evident in treatments of both genotypes that did not cause marked growth effects. This suggests that the effects of UV-B contributing to increased carbon isotope discrimination in L er may have been primarily associated with high stomatal conductance, and in fah I with both high stomatal conductance and damage to photosynthetic machinery.  相似文献

Soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv Essex, plants were grown in the field in a 2 × 2 factorial design, under ambient and supplemental levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation (supplemental daily dose of 5.1 effective kilojoules per square meter) and were either well-watered or subjected to drought. Soil water potentials were reduced to −2.0 megapascals by the exclusion of natural precipitation in the drought plots and were maintained at approximately −0.5 megapascal by supplemental irrigation in well-watered plots. Plant growth and gas exchange characteristics were affected under both drought and supplemental UV-B radiation. Whole-leaf gas exchange analysis indicated that stomatal limitations on photosynthesis were only significantly affected by the combination of UV-B radiation and drought but substrate (ribulose bisphosphate) regeneration limitations were observed under either stress. The combined effect of both drought and UV-B radiation on photosynthetic gas exchange was a reduction in apparent quantum efficiency and the rapid appearance of biochemical limitations to photosynthesis concomitant with reduced diffusional limitations. However, the combination of stresses did not result in additive effects on total plant growth or seed yield compared to reductions under either stress independently.  相似文献

Long term water stress inactivates Rubisco in subterranean clover   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
In long-term field experiments, during consecutive years, microswards of subterranean clover were irrigated to minimise water deficits or subjected to progressively increasing drought over 30 days. Both leaf water potential and relative water content steadily decreased during the experiments. Plants affected by drought grew more slowly and photosynthesis was decreased. Photosynthetic rate (A) and Rubisco were analysed in relation to midday water potentials and relative water contents. The difference in A between draughted and irrigated plants increased progressively, in part as a result of decreased stomatal conductance and CO2 concentration within leaf (Ci). However, A-Ci curves suggest that the photosynthetic capacity in plants experiencing long-term stress was reduced by 50% when compared with irrigated plants. Drought decreased both the initial and the total Rubisco activity per unit area in a similar way but did not reduce the amount of Rubisco protein per unit leaf area. Thus, the specific activity of Rubisco, rather than its activation state, decreased suggesting that under water stress the active sites were blocked by inhibitors.  相似文献
