In western Norway, pairs of White-backed Woodpecker breeding in coastal areas (<2 km from the sea) started egg laying earlier than pairs in inland areas (2–15 km from the sea). Laying was earlier in years when the ambient temperature was higher during the pre-laying period. About half of 69 pairs studied started laying within the period 25–30 April over the 10 study years. Clutch size ( = 4.0 eggs) and breeding success values (fledglings per egg; = 0.63) did not differ between years. The mean number of fledglings per nest was 2.4. The mean body mass of fledglings differed between years and were negatively correlated with the laying date. Fledgling mass differed between sexes (males = 87.8g, females = 84.2g), and both sexes were heavier in coastal than in inland areas. The mean hourly feeding rate of nestlings increased with nestling age, but feeding rate per nestling did not vary with nestling number. The nestling food was mainly comprised by wood-living beetle larvae ( = 72% by dry mass). It is suggested that breeding success is related to territorial quality, which, in turn, strongly influences female quality.
Zusammenfassung In Westnorwegen beginnen Weißrückenspechte, die an der Küste brüten, eher mit der Eiablage als Paare im Inland (>2 km von der Küsten entfernt). Höhere Lufttemperaturen in der Vorlegezeit begünstigten frühere Eiablage. Mehr als die Hälfte der 69 untersuchten Paare begannen innerhalb von 10 Jahren zwischen 25. und 30. April mit der Eiablage. Gelegegröße ( = 4,0 Eier) und Bruterfolg (flügge Junge pro Ei; = 0,63) unterschieden sich nicht in einzelnen Jahren. Pro Nest flogen 2,4 Junge aus. Die mittlere Körpermasse der flüggen Jungvögel war mit dem Datum der Eiablage negativ korreliert. Flügge Männchen waren etwas schwerer als gleichalte Weibchen ( 87,9, 84,2 g); beide Geschlechter waren in Küstengebieten schwerer als im Inland. Die mittlere Fütterungsrate pro Stunde stieg mit dem Alter der Nestlinge, veränderte sich aber nicht mit der Zahl der Nestlinge. Die Nestlingsnahrung bestand vor allem aus holzbewohnenden Käferlarven ( = 72% der Trockenmasse). Vermutlich hängt der Bruterfolg mit der Qualität des Brutreviers zusammen, die wiederum vor allem die Kondition des Weibchens bestimmt.

Nutrient limitation of primary production was experimentally assessed using an in situ bioassay technique in the Quebrada Salto, a third-order tropical stream draining the northern foothills of the Cordillera Central in Costa Rica. Bioassays employed artificial substrata enriched with nutrients that slowly diffuse through an agar-sand matrix (Pringle & Bowers, 1984). Multiple comparisons of regression coefficients, describing chlorophyll-a accrual through time for different nutrient treatments, revealed positive micronutrient effect(s). Micronutrient treatment combinations (Fe, B, Mn, Zn, Co, Mo, EDTA), supplemented with and without nitrate and phosphate, exhibited significantly greater chlorophyll-a accrual over all other treatments (P < 0.05), supporting over three times that of the control after 14-d of substratum colonization. Neither of the major nutrients (N or P) produced a significant stimulation, although the N treatment displayed 50% more chlorophyll-a than the control after 14-d. Similarly, Si, EDTA, and Si + N + P treatments did not exhibit chlorophyll-a response curves that were significantly different from the control. During the experiment, mean NH4-N and (NO2 + NO3)-N concentrations in the Salto were 2.0 µM (28.6 µg · l–1) and 7.2 µM (100.2 µg · l –1), respectively. High concentrations of PO4-P ( = 2.0 µM; 60.9 µg · l–1) and TP ( = 3.0 µM; 94.0 µg · l–1) were also found, and consequently low molar N:P ratios = 4.7). Despite the potential for N limitation in the system, both N and P appear to be at growth saturating levels. This may be due to micronutrient limitation and/or light limitation of periphyton growth in densely shaded upstream portions of the stream.  相似文献

Summary In dynamic light scattering, measurements of the intensity-intensity time correlation function from a suspension of rod-like particles of length L could reveal dynamical information related to translational and internal motions of those particles. For a suspension of thick filaments isolated from the myosin-regulated, striated muscles of Limulus at KL>1 (where K is the scattering vector), the average characteristic linewidth ( ) increased with the addition of Ca2+ or with the depletion of ATP. The increase in the with the addition of Ca2+ could be due to the presence of energy-requiring, high-frequency motions of the crossbridges activated by Ca2+. The increase in which occurred with the depletion of ATP was assumed to be mainly due to the thermal motions of the crossbridges after they had moved radially away from the filament backbone. The percentage increase in following the addition of Ca2+ was found to be seasonal, i.e., values of obtained from thick filaments isolated between the middle of June and the middle of September were smaller than those obtained during the rest of the year. The effect of temperature on the percentage increase in was also different. The increase showed a maximum at about 35°C during the summer and at about 25°C at other times. However, the percentage increase in developed under ATP-depleted conditions showed no temperature-related maximum. Chlorophyll-nutrient relationships in North Island lakes (New Zealand)   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1  
A model for the prediction of chlorophyll a in the near surface waters (1 m) of North Island lakes was developed using data from the literature and our own study of 12 North Island lakes. Annual geometric mean concentrations of chlorophyll a, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were used since no distinct growing season was discernable. Annual mean ratios of total nitrogen to total phosphorus in the near surface waters ranged between 10 and 59 (by weight). Strong correlations were obtained between log-transformed values of chlorophyll a and total nitrogen (r2 = 0.53, n = 16), chlorophyll a and total phosphorus (r2 = 0.71, n = 21), and between total nitrogen and total phosphorus (r2 = 0.69, n = 16). However, after correcting for the high interdependency between total nitrogen and total phosphorus, only total phosphorus was found to be important in predicting chlorophyll concentrations. Much of the variance in the chlorophyll-phosphorus relation was attributable to differences in mean lake depth. Lakes with mean depths less than 11 m had significantly more chlorophyll a per unit of total phosphorus ( = 0.54 µg · µg–1, SE = 0.05, n = 6) than lakes of greater mean depth ( = 0.17 µg · µg–1, SE = 0.02, n = 14). When the effect of mean depth was taken into account, 89% of the variance in chlorophyll a was explained compared with 71% for the simple linear regression on total phosphorus alone.  相似文献

A small catchment on the Swedish West Coast has been studied over four years to determine S dynamics by using S isotope ratios. A Norway spruce dominated forest covers the catchment, and small peat areas occur in the lower parts of the catchment. The runoff values varied both during the year, and from year to year. Over the period from February 1990 to December 1993, the values ranged from — 1%. to +11%. Over the same period, the throughfall values ranged from +1%. to +15%. There was no correlation (r 2= 0.01; Pr(F)=0.57) between values in throughfall and runoff. Since the only input of S to the catchment is atmospheric deposition, the long-term runoff S mass flux is controlled by the deposition. Therefore, processes in the catchment are responsible for the variation in the runoff values. During periods with enriched runoff, bacterial dissimilatory SO 4 2– reduction occurs in the catchment. After very dry periods, oxidation of this reduced S, which is32S-enriched, can be traced in runoff. Previous studies of the catchment have not been able to distinguish between: 1) oxidation of reduced S and dry deposition, and 2) reduction and adsorption. From the current study, it can be concluded that adsorption and dry deposition cannot cause the observed variation in runoff .  相似文献

The justification for the “generalization that primate males are more aggressive than females” (Fedigan & Baxter, 1984) was tested in a troop of 24 captive rhesus monkeys. Males (N=9) were more dominant than females (N=15), i.e., they had more subordinate partners ( m=17.0 vs. f=6.6;p<0.01); hence, their aggression rate was higher ( m=77.6 vs. m=38.1;p<0.05). However, adjusting the rate of aggression according to the number of subordinate targets revealed no gender difference and males directed numbers of aggressive acts against individual subordinate partners that were not higher than those of females ( m=4.4 vs. f=5.4;p>0.1). It was concluded that aggressiveness is an individual attribute that is (1) independent of dominance status, and (2) independent of sex.  相似文献

Summary Barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown from seed for 28 days in flowing solution culture were subjected to different root temperatures (3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 17, 25°C) for 14 days with a common air temperature of 25/15°C (day/night). Uptake of NH4 and NO3 ions was monitored separately and continuously from solutions maintained at 10 M NH4NO3 and pH 6.0. Effects of root temperature on unit absorption rate , flux and inflow were compared. After 5 days , and increased with temperature over the range 3–11°C for NH4 ions and over the range 3–13°C for NO3 ions, with little change for either ion above these temperatures. Q10 temperature coefficients for NH4 ions (3–13°C) were 1.9, 1.7 and 1.6 for , and respectively, the corresponding values for NO3 ions being 5.0, 4.5 and 4.6. For both ions, , and changed with time as did their temperature dependence over the range 3–25°C, suggesting that rates of ontogenetic development and the extent of adaptation to temperature may have varied among treatments.  相似文献

Phytoplankton diversity, primary productivity and community metabolism were measured for 1 year in a 0.94 ha pond located in north-central Texas. Gross primary production ranged from 4.5 to 46.8 kcal m−2 day−1 ( =22.0 kcal m−2 day−1) and community metabolism ranged from 7.3 to 32.4 kcal m−2 day−1 ( =14.8 kcal m−2 day−1). Average production/respiration ratio (1.5) showed that the pond was principally autotrophic. Photosynthetic efficiency (gross primary production/0.5 total solar radiation) ranged from 0.32 to 2.8 with a mean of 1.2. Phytoplankton diversity based on numbers and biomass fluctuated greatly. Highest gross primary productivity occurred during Cyanophyta blooms in late summer-early fall when species diversity was minimal. Water temperature and turbidity, which governed light penetration, were the principal determinants of primary production.  相似文献

A study was made of the effect of reciprocal inhibition on individual firing motoneurons in the extensor carpi ulnaris and soleus muscle in human subjects. Peristimulus histograms (PSH) were plotted at different average frequency of motoneuron firing ( ) and the change in duration of interspike intervals (ISI) was analyzed. For reciprocal inhibition, as for other types of inhibition, is a factor in the effectiveness of motoneuron inhibition. The duration of inhibition apparent in the PSH, the sizes of zones of inhibition effectiveness in the ISIs and lengthening of the intervals are dependent on . For all motoneurons, the low range is most favorable for effective inhibition. The aim of this study was to estimate the characteristic exercise intensity CL which produces the maximal steady state of blood lactate concentration (MLSS) from submaximal intensities of 20 min carried out on the same day and separated by 40 min. Ten fit male adults [maximal oxygen uptake max 62 (SD 7) ml · min–1 · kg–1] exercisOed for two 30-min periods on a cycle ergometer at 67% (test 1.1) and 82% of max (test 1.2) separated by 40 min. They exercised 4 days later for 30 min at 82% of max without prior exercise (test 2). Blood lactate was collected for determination of lactic acid concentration every 5 min and heart rate and O2 uptake were measured every 30 s. There were no significant differences at the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, or 30th min between , lactacidaemia, and heart rate during tests 1.2 and 2. Moreover, we compared the exercise intensities CL which produced the MLSS obtained during tests 1.1 and 1.2 or during tests 1.1 and 2 calculated from differential values of lactic acid blood concentration ([1a]b) between the 30th and the 5th min or between the 20th and the 5th min. There was no significant difference between the different values of CL [68 (SD 9), 71 (SD 7), 73 (SD 6),71 (SD 11) % of max (ANOVA test,P<0.05). Four subjects ran for 60 min at their CL determined from periods performed on the same day (test 1.1 and 1.2) and the difference between the [la]b at 5 min and at 20 min ( ([la]b)) was computed. The [la]b remained constant during exercise and ranged from 2.2 to 6.7 mmol · l–1 [mean value equal to 3.9 (SD 1) mmol · l–1]. These data suggest that the CL protocol did not overestimate the exercise intensity corresponding to the maximal fractional utilization of max at MLSS. For half of the subjects the CL was very close to the higher stage (82% of max where an accumulation of lactate in the blood with time was observed. It can be hypothesized that CL was very close to the real MLSS considering the level of accuracy of [la]b measurement. This study showed that exercise at only two intensities, performed at 65% and 80% of max and separated by 40 min of complete rest, can be used to determine the intensity yielding a steady state of [la–1]b near the real MLSS workload value.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung In einer agrarisch strukturierten Kulturlandschaft in und um Osnabrück wurden in 17 Jahren (1976–1992) Phänologie und Brutbiologie einer überwiegend auf Ackerland brütenden Kiebitzpopulation untersucht. In der Regel kehrten die ersten Kiebitze von Mitte Februar bis Anfang März ( = 26.2.) aus ihren Winterquartieren zurück. Durchschnittlich begannen sie am 28. 3. mit der Eiablage (frühstens 11. 3. 1990). Gelege waren gewöhnlich von Anfang April bis Mitte Juni vorhanden (letztes Gelege 25. 6. 1991). Die ersten Küken schlüpften in den letzten April- oder ersten Maitagen ( = 27.4.; Extremwert 10. 4. 1990). Von den Nachgelegen schlüpften regelmäßig bis Mitte Juni ( = 19.6.) die letzten Küken (letzter Schlupftermin 25. 6. 1991). Als Folge vieler Nachgelege wurden jungeführende Altvögel über einen sehr langen Zeitraum von Ende April bis Mitte Juli beobachtet (spätester Termin 23. 7. 1988). Alljährlich begann im Mittel am 5. 6. der Frühsommerwegzug. Zwischen dem Beginn der Eiablage und den Monatsmitteltemperaturen sowie zwischen der Eiablage und den Frosttagen der jeweiligen Monate Februar und März bestand ein Zusammenhang. Die mittlere Gelegegröße in 386 Nestern betrug 3,83 Eier. Kiebitze bebrüteten 24 bis 28 Tage (durchschnittlich 26 Tage) ihre Gelege. Aus 221 Nestern mit 841 Eiern schlüpften 788 Küken, was einer Schlupfrate von 93,7% oder 3,59 Küken pro erfolgreichem Gelege entsprach. Aus sämtlichen 438 Gelegen (einschließlich der zerstörten) schlüpften im Mittel 2,49 Küken.
Phenology and breeding biology of Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus): Results of a 17 years' study in NW-Germany
Summary Phenology and breeding biology of Lapwing on arable land near the city of Osnabrück (Lower Saxony) were studied. A set of nearly complete data concerning the seasonal rhythm in a period of 17 years (1976–1992) was gathered. Arrival used to be from the middle of February till begin of March ( = 26.2.). Egg-laying begann on an average on 28. 3., the earliest egg-laying was observed on 11. 3. (1990), last clutch was seen on 25. 6. (1991). Clutch-presence extended from early April till middle of June. Hatching took place from late April to first of May ( = 27.4.; earliest date: 10. 4. 1990). Hatching of replacement clutches was observed till mid of June ( = 19.6.). Last hatching day was 25. 6. 1991. Adults with chicks occurred from end of April till mid of July, latest date was the 23. 7. (1988). Early summer migration started in average on 5. 6. The annual variation of the start of laying by Lapwing was related to mean monthly temperature and to the number of frost days in February and March. Average clutch size of 386 clutches was 3.83 eggs. Incubation took 24 to 28 days (average 26 days). From 221 clutches with 841 eggs 788 chicks hatched, from which was calculated a hatching rate of 93.7% or 3.59 chicks per successful clutch. From 438 clutches (including the destroyed ones), in average 2.49 chicks hatched.

Summary The resting oxygen consumption and breathing pattern of nine newborn and adult species (ranging in body size from mouse to human) have been compared on the basis of data collected from the literature. Minute ventilation is similarly linked to at both ages, the percent of extracted as O2 about 2.2. Tidal volume/kg is an interspecies constant in newborns and adults, approximately 8 ml/kg. Breathing frequency decreases with the increase in size in a different way at the two ages: large species have newborns breathing at rates 2–3 times above the corresponding adults' values, while in the small species newborns and adults breathe at almost the same rate. Therefore the newborns of the smallest species have both and below the expected values, implying a greater inability to cope with the external demands than newborns of larger species. Several considerations indicate that in the smallest newborns the mechanical properties of the respiratory system could be a constraint to resting ventilations larger than observed. It is therefore possible that their low is the cause, and not the effect, of the relatively small .  相似文献

It is well known that ixodid ticks have the ability to induce immunity in their host. We demonstrate, for the first time, that the tickBoophilus decoloratus induced immunity in its bovine host, since the mean weight of engorged females fed on naive animals dropped from 201.5 mg, to 173.7 mg and 155.3 mg, for females fed on calves previously exposed once and twice, respectively, toB. decoloratus infestations. Ticks which had been transferred from one individual host to another one were able to complete their feeding period on a sensitive host. Such ticks were significantly heavier ( 245.2 mg) than those fed on a naive ( 201.5 mg) host for the entire normal feeding period. A negative correlation between the mean weight of the engorged female ticks and the level of serum gamma globulins in the host was also demonstrated.  相似文献

Rectal (Tre), mean skin temperature ( sk) and sweating rate ( ) were measured in 4 residents of temperate climate under acute moderate heat exposure (designated EE in such an experimental situation), after 3 weeks in India (designated as EI) and in 8 Indian residents (designated as II) both at rest and during submaximal exercises at 2 different intensities. At rest, Tre is higher in EI (37.6°C) than in EE (36.8°C, P<0.01) and reaches 37.8°C in II. At the end of exercise, the increment in Tre seems to depend on work load only and to be independent of thermal environment; S follows a similar pattern in the 3 groups of subjects: sk is altered neither by exercise nor acclimatization. Under chronic heat exposure compared to acute conditions: (1) identical is achieved with higher Tre and similar sk so that the linear relationships vs Tre is shifted to the right. (2) the Tresk difference is greater at rest and during exercise: hence, skin blood flow, calculated from heat balance equation diminishes. In hot climate, a rise in Tre seems to be an adaptive response which allows the body to reduce skin blood flow.  相似文献

Quasi-elastic laser light scattering has been used to investigate the size and dispersity of synaptosomes and synaptic vesicles isolated from optic lobes of the squid Loligo pealei. Synaptosomal fractions were highly polydisperse ( ) and the mean diameter ( ) ranged from 0.5–2.0 m. Size distribution histograms yielded two major components — smaller particles ( ) and a larger group of particles ( ). The heterogeneity of the synaptosomal particles detected in solution is in agreement with published data obtained using electron microscopy. Purified synaptic vesicle fractions also yielded complex particle size distribution data. A component with a mean diameter in the range 150–250 nm was detected, though a smaller particle ( ) dominated the scattering signal. This smaller particle closely resembles in size the electron lucent vesicles seen in the majority of squid optic lobe nerve terminals when examined by electron microscopy. Osmotically-induced shirnkage and swelling of the synptosomes was detected. Depolarization by veratridine (1.0×10–4 M) did not result in a detectable change in the size of synaptosomal particles.  相似文献

Summary In the intertidal shore crab,Carcinus maenas, pH and values of the prebranchial venous hemolymph, and , the PO2 values of the arterialized cardiac hemolymph, , were measured, and the ventilatory activity was assessed by measuring the hydrostatic pressures at the exits of the epibranchial cavities, under four environmental conditions: normoxic water, normoxic air, hypoxic gas, hyperoxic gas.In the crab breathing normoxic air, was lower and higher than in animals breathing normoxic water. With the switch to hypoxic gas, ventilation increased and and decreased. With the switch to hyperoxic gas, ventilation decreased, and increased and decreased.Thus these crabs breathing air were not as well oxygenated as when breathing air-equilibrated water, and because of their low , they were relatively hypervetilating and hypocapnic compared to air-breathing vertebrates. Hyperoxic breathing, increasing and reducing ventilatory drive, led to increased . Conversely, was reduced by hypoxic breathing. These observations suggest that the gas exchanger of intertidal crabs is not as successfully designed for air breathing as that of land-colonizing insects and air-breathing vertebrates.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to measure running times to exhaustion (Tlim) on a treadmill at 100% of the minimum velocity which elicits max max in 38 elite male long - distance runners max = 71.4 ± 5.5 ml.kg–1.min–1 and max = 21.8 ± 1.2 km.h–1). The lactate threshold (LT) was defined as a starting point of accelerated lactate accumulation around 4 mM and was expressed in max. Tlim value was negatively correlated with max (r = -0.362, p< 0.05) and max (r = –0.347, p< 0.05) but positively with LT (%v max) (r = 0.378, p < 0.05). These data demonstrate that running time to exhaustion at max in a homogeneous group of elite male long-distance runners was inversely related to max and experimentally illustrates the model of Monod and Scherrer regarding the time limit-velocity relationship adapted from local exercise for running by Hughson et al. The development of membrane bioenergetic studies during the last 25 years has clearly demonstrated the validity of the Mitchellian chemiosmotic H+ cycle concept. The circulation of H+ ions was shown to couple respiration-dependent or light-dependent energy-releasing reactions to ATP formation and performance of other types of membrane-linked work in mitochondria, chloroplasts, some bacteria, tonoplasts, secretory granules and plant and fungal outer cell membranes. A concrete version of the direct chemiosmotic mechanism, in which H+ potential formation is a simple consequence of the chemistry of the energy-releasing reaction, is already proved for the photosynthetic reaction centre complexes.Recent progress in the studies on chemiosmotic systems has made it possible to extend the coupling-ion principle to an ion other than H+. It was found that, in ceertain bacteria, as well as in the outer membrane of the animal cell, Na+ effectively substitutes for H+ as the coupling ion (the chemiosmotic Na+ cycle). A precedent is set when the Na+ cycle appears to be the only mechanism of energy production in the bacterial cell. In the more typical case, however, the H+ and Na+ cycles coexist in one and the same membrane (bacteria) or in two diffeerent membranes of one and the same cell (animals). The purpose of the present study was to assess the relationship between the rapidity of increased gas exchange (i.e. oxygen uptake ) and increased cardiac output ( ) during the transient phase following the onset of exercise. Five healthy male subjects performed multiple rest-exercise or light exercise (25 W)-exercise transitions on an electrically braked ergometer at exercise intensities of 50, 75, or 100 W for 6 min, respectively. Each transition was performed at least eight times for each load in random order. The was obtained by a breath-by-breath method, and was measured by an impedance method during normal breathing, using an ensemble average. On transitions from rest to exercise, rapidly increased during phase I with time constants of 6.8–7.3 s. The also showed a similar rapid increment with time constants of 6.0–6.8 s with an apparent increase in stroke volume (SV). In this phase I, increased to about 29.7%–34.1% of the steady-state value and increased to about 58.3%–87.0%. Thereafter, some 20 s after the onset of exercise a mono-exponential increase to steady-state occurred both in and with time constants of 26.7–32.3 and 23.7–34.4 s, respectively. The insignificant difference between and time constants in phase I and the abrupt increase in both and SV at the onset of exercise from rest provided further evidence for a cardiodynamic contribution to following the onset of exercise from rest.  相似文献

This study investigated cardiovascular responses to 2 min sustained submaximal (20% MVC) and maximal (100% MVC) voluntary isometric contractions of the finger flexors in healthy young women. Cardiovascular variables investigated were: heart rate (f c), mean arterial pressure ( a), and stroke volume (SV). Doppler echocardiography was used to estimate SV from measures of aortic diameter (AD) and time-velocity integrals. Preliminary studies indicated that AD did not change significantly after 2 min sustained 100% MVC. Therefore, pre-exercise AD values were used to calculate SV before, during and after exercise. During the 2-min 100% MVC period, f c and aincreased significantly during the first 30 s of contraction. f c then remained constant during the remainder of the 2-min contraction period, while acontinued to rise. SV did not change significantly during the 100% MVC task but increased significantly during recovery from sustained 100% MVC. The data suggest that the magnitude of cardiovascular responses to isometric exercise is dependent on the specific task performed, and that there is a different pattern of response for f c, a, and SV during 20% and 100% MVC tasks. Unlike f c and a, SV did not change significantly during isometric exercise, but increased significantly after sustained 100% MVC.  相似文献
