Sexes' roles in post‐copulatory processes have important effects on individual fitness and are promising to study in species showing complex mating behaviours. In the spider Schizocosa malitiosa, males perform two different copulatory patterns, pattern 1 includes 80% of total pedipalp insertions and pattern 2 includes 20%. Both patterns produce similar number of offspring, but pattern 1 induces higher female reluctance to remating than pattern 2. We hypothesised that the complex copulatory patterns are linked to post‐copulatory sexual selection, affecting males' sperm transfer and the resulting sperm storage by females. First, we examined amounts of sperm in males and live females from uninterrupted (pattern 1 + 2) and interrupted matings (pattern 1, pattern 2). Second, in order to disentangle male and female actions, we induced males to mate with dead females and examined amounts of sperm. Males transfer in total 71% of the sperm available in their pedipalps, being higher but not significant in pattern 1 than in pattern 2. Females drastically reduced the amount of sperm stored in their spermathecae and such control is stronger in pattern 1 compared to pattern 2 matings. We propose that cryptic female control is a main factor driving males to strengthen sperm transfer. Active female reduction in ejaculate most probably diminished her reluctance to remate.  相似文献

Environmental microbes have the potential to be involved in nearly all behavioural processes. For example, mating systems where males use intromittent organs to transfer sperm to females represent a means by which environmental microbes collected by males can breach entry into females' body cavities during mating. However, the degree to which the acquisition of environmental microbes onto important sex structures alters courtship behaviours remains unknown. Here, we collected bacteria from the copulatory organs of Agelenopsis pennsylvanica funnel‐weaving spiders in situ to test whether exposure to bacteria on copulatory organs can alter hosts' courtship behaviour, reproductive success and survival. We used a standardized assay to repeatedly measure each spider's aggressiveness, a behavioural component of both male courtship and female sexual receptivity. Then, we experimentally altered the bacteria present on male and female spiders' copulatory organs with an application of either (a) a mixture of bacteria collected from conspecifics to increase bacterial presence, (b) an antibiotic to reduce bacterial presence or (c) a procedural control. Each spider was paired with a size‐matched spider of the opposite sex whose copulatory organs were unaltered, and we measured the latency until the onset and the duration of courtship. Spiders were then isolated, and we measured each individual's time until death and female fecundity over the next 40 days. We found that female exposure to bacteria had multiple effects on mating dynamics. Males took over four times longer to begin courting females that had been exposed to bacteria compared to unexposed and antibiotic‐treated females. Only when courting these bacteria‐exposed females, males began courtship sooner when females were more aggressive. Lastly, females whose mate had been exposed to bacteria experienced reduced survival. These data suggest that bacteria present on animals' copulatory organs can alter courtship behaviours, female survivorship, and may potentially play a role in mating dynamics.  相似文献

In a sexual context, it is expected that females base their choice of mate on the behaviours that males perform during courtship, as such behaviours are associated with the male's mate quality. Stridulation is one form of female communication in arthropods, for example, spiders. In spiders, stridulation during sexual interactions is relatively common in some groups but mainly restricted to males. In the pholcid spider Holocnemus pluchei (Pholcidae), both sexes have stridulatory organs. The aims of the present work were to: (a) determine possible differences in the frequency of occurrence of stridulation between females during inter‐sexual interactions, (b) establish female consistency in stridulation along repeated interactions and (c) analyse if female stridulation is associated with certain male behaviours during pre‐copulatory courtship and with male size. Female H. pluchei showed highly repeatable differences in their frequency of stridulation across consecutive encounters with males (ICC = 0.64). However, only a modest level of repeatability was detected in total time females spent stridulating across trials (ICC = 0.19). Females’ mean stridulatory behaviour did not change across ten consecutive trials spread across 20 days, and their behaviour was apparently unaffected by male persistence of copulatory attempted and/or size. These results imply that the frequency of female stridulatory behaviour is a trait that is highly characteristic of each individual. Finally, our work opens the door to determine whether behavioural consistency manifests in other ecological contexts and their functional implications.  相似文献

The copulation duration of male wolf spider Pardosa astrigera, was significantly influenced by environmental temperature, as had been found in some insect species. Therefore, temperature during male courtship and copulation may influence the amount of sperm and seminal fluids transferred during copulation, which in turn could influence female fitness. In order to test this hypothesis, we subjected pairs of male and female P. astrigera to five temperature groups from 16 to 32 °C at an interval of 4 °C, and investigated whether and to what extent the various temperatures during male courtship and copulation influenced female reproductive output and female adult longevity under controlled laboratory conditions. With the increase of copulation temperature, females were more likely to lay egg sacs. The total egg sacs and lifetime fecundity of female were positively influenced by copulation temperature, whereas female lifetime spiderlings and adult longevity were independent of copulation temperature.  相似文献

Axinoscymnus cardilobus (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) is an important predator of Bemisia tabaci (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) that occurs in high population density of B. tabaci. Temperature among other factors is observed to play an important role in the development of arthropods. The effect of temperature on the development of A. cardilobus was studied at seven constant temperature regimes (14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32 °C). The results indicated that the duration of egg, larval and pupal stages were significantly influenced by increased temperature. The rate of development gradually increased with increase in temperature from 14 °C to 26 °C, but declined from 26 °C to 32 °C. The survival rates of different insect stages were stable at temperatures between 20 °C and 26 °C, but at extreme temperatures of 32 °C and 14 °C, a sharp decrease was evident. Ovipositional period of the female decreased when temperatures were increased from 17 °C to 32 °C. The highest fecundity of the female (225.7 eggs per female) was recorded at 23 °C. Life tables of A. cardilobus were constructed based on the experimental results at temperatures of 14–32 °C. The reproductive rate (R0), the innate capacity for increase (rm) and the finite rate of increase (λ) reached the maximum values at 23 °C, of 70.7, 0.059 and 1.062, respectively. The mean generation time (T) decreased with increased temperature from 17 °C to 32 °C, the highest and least values recorded at 17 °C and 32 °C were 112.7 and 38.7, respectively. These results offer valuable insight on the importation and establishment of A. cardilobus into new environments with diverse temperature regimes.  相似文献

We measured frequency and duration of different courtship activities of male guppies (especially the simoid display) at different temperatures, by means of direct observations, and video-recorder. We observed that the animals undergoing long-term temperature adaptation show nearly an independence of courtship frequency to the influence of temperature within the range of 20° to 30°C. After transfer to higher or lower temperatures, the frequency of the sigmoid behaviour was diminished. Afterwords, temperature compensation took place. The duration of the sigmoid display was temperature dependent. We concluded that certain fin movements during the sigmoid display were directly temperature dependent, and that lowering the temperature acted as a stressor on sexual motivation. After adaptation to the new temperature (which lasted 4–5 days) the fish were able to show a complete cycle of 5.5 dorsal fin movements per sigmoid display in temperatures between 20° and 30° C.  相似文献

越来越多的研究发现,雄性产生精子(精液)也需付出代价。雄性除了依据配偶质量和竞争对手的竞争强度适应性调整生殖投入外,雄性在求偶和交配行为上也相应产生适应性反应,求偶和交配行为具有可塑性。目前雄性求偶和交配行为可塑性研究主要集中于雌性多次交配的类群中,在雌性单次交配的类群中研究甚少。以雌蛛一生只交配一次而雄蛛可多次交配的星豹蛛为研究对象,比较:(1)前一雄性拖丝上信息物质对后续雄蛛求偶和交配行为的影响,(2)雌雄不同性比对雄蛛求偶和交配行为的影响。研究结果表明,星豹蛛前一雄蛛拖丝上的信息物质对后续雄蛛求偶潜伏期、求偶持续时间和交配持续时间都没有显著影响,但前一雄蛛拖丝上的信息物质对后续雄蛛求偶强度有显著抑制作用。同时,性比对星豹蛛雄蛛求偶和交配行为都没有显著影响。可见,星豹蛛雄蛛对同种雄性拖丝上的化学信息可产生求偶行为的适应性调整,而对性比不产生适应性反应。  相似文献

This study investigates the physiological responses in the hermatypic coral Galaxea fascicularis exposed to salinity stress (from 37 ppt to 15 ppt) for 12 h, combined effects of reduced salinity (from 37 ppt to 20 ppt) and two temperatures (26 °C and 32 °C) for 12 h and combined effects of reduced salinity (from 37 ppt to 25 ppt) and two temperatures (26 °C and 29.5 °C) for 10 d. The results demonstrate that the coral is tolerant to 12 h exposure to extremely low salinity (15 ppt). The study also shows that combined effects of temperature and low salinity aggravate the damage on the photosynthesis of the symbiotic dinoflagellates in 12 h exposure to 20 ppt sea water. This study suggests that high temperature (29.5 °C) aggravates the damage of trivially low salinity (30 ppt) on the holobiont (the coral and its symbiotic dinoflagellates) in 10 d exposure. However, high temperature (29.5 °C) may have an antagonistic effect between temperature and low salinity (25 ppt) on metabolism of the holobiont. Based on the above results, we suggest that (1) the true mechanism of corals exposed to combined effects of low salinity and high temperature is complicated. This calls for more studies on different corals. Future studies should aim at investigating long-term low-level stress in order to simulate in situ conditions more accurately; (2) when corals exposed to extremely severe combined stressors for short-term or trivially severe stressors for relative long-term, the combined effects of two stressors (such as low salinity and high temperature) may be negative, otherwise, the effects may be additive.  相似文献

Preimaginal development and adult longevity and reproduction of Dichochrysa prasina Burmeister were studied at six constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 27, 30 and 33 °C) and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D). Eggs of the flour moth Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) were used as food throughout preimaginal development, whereas the adults of D. prasina fed on a liquid diet of water, yeast hydrolysate, sugar and honey. At the highest tested temperature of 33 °C no larvae completed their development. At the rest of the tested temperatures the egg to adult developmental period ranged from approximately 92 days at 15 °C to 25 days at 30 °C. Percentages of adult emergence ranged from 36% at 15 °C to 84% at 30 °C. Both adult longevity and fecundity were significantly affected by temperature and the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) reached its maximum value at 27 °C. These results could be useful for the establishment of a small scale rearing and mass production of D. prasina.  相似文献

The reproductive and developmental biology of Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, a parasitoid of the glassy-winged sharpshooter Homalodisca coagulata (Say), was determined at five constant temperatures in the laboratory: 15; 20; 25; 30; 33 °C. At 30 °C, G. ashmeadi maintained the highest successful parasitism rates with 46.1% of parasitoid larvae surviving to adulthood. Lifetime fecundity was greatest at 25 °C and fell sharply as temperature either increased or decreased around 25 °C. Temperature had no effect on sex ratio of parasitoid offspring. Mean adult longevity was inversely related to temperature with a maximum of 20 days at 15 °C to a minimum of eight days at 33 °C. Developmental rates increased nonlinearly with increasing temperatures. Developmental rate data were fitted with the modified Logan model for oviposition to adult development times across each of the five experimental temperatures to determine optimal and upper lethal temperature thresholds. The lower developmental threshold estimated by the Logan model and linear regression were 1.10 and 7.16 °C, respectively. Linear regression of developmental rate for temperatures 15–30 °C indicated that 222 degree-days were required above a minimum threshold of 7.16 °C to complete development. A temperature of 37.6 °C was determined to be the upper development threshold with optimal development occurring at 30.5 °C. Demographic parameters were calculated and pseudo-replicates for intrinsic rate of increase (rm), net reproductive rates (Ro), generation time (Tc), population doubling time (Td), and finite rate of increase (λ) were generated using the bootstrap method. Mean bootstrap estimates of demographic parameters were compared across temperatures using ANOVA and nonlinear regression.  相似文献

Male courtship behavior is generally thought to function prior to copulation, as an inducement to the female to allow the male to copulate with her; this study indicates however, that male courtship during and following copulation (“copulatory courtship”) is common in insects and spiders (81% of 131 species in 102 genera and 49 families, mostly Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, and Araneioidea). Copulatory courtship is apparently evolutionarily labile, as expected if it is under sexual selection; intrageneric variation occurred in all 17 genera in which more than one species was observed. In 81% of 94 species with copulatory courtship, the male abandoned the female soon after copulation ended; thus, copulatory courtship appears not to function generally to induce acceptance of further copulatory attempts. The most likely explanation for copulatory courtship is that it represents attempts by males to influence cryptic female choice. This suggests that an aspect of sexual selection by female choice not considered by Darwin may be more important than previously appreciated and that the common practice in evolutionary studies of measuring male reproductive success by counting numbers of copulations may sometimes be misleading because of cryptic female choice during and after copulation.  相似文献

Amblypygi is an arachnid order possessing a unique pair of spined pedipalps: appendages that perform in prey capture, courtship, and contest. Pedipalp length, hypothesized to be under sexual selection, varies markedly across amblypygid species, and pedipalp spination, thought to reflect selection for function in prey capture, also differs interspecifically. Differences in pedipalp shape between species may indicate that the relative strength of selection for prey capture and sexual selection vary across the group. However, interspecific differences in pedipalp shape have not been quantified, due to difficulties in identifying homologous features. For the first time, we quantify trends in amblypygid pedipalp shape complexity. We use elliptical Fourier analysis to quantify 2D complexity in pedipalp outlines across eleven species and six genera. We find that complexity significantly decreases as pedipalp length increases. This appears to be driven by relative spine length, suggesting that a trade‐off exists between pedipalp length and spination. Furthermore, significant female‐biased sexual dimorphism in shape complexity is present in the tibial segment of the amblypygid pedipalp. Our results provide novel insights into the drivers of amblypygid pedipalp evolution and suggest that a functional trade‐off between performance in prey capture and other functions under sexual selection exist in this enigmatic structure.  相似文献

A thermogradient apparatus was used to investigate the effect of variable dew temperatures on infection of green foxtail by the indigenous pathogen Pyricularia setariae (Ps) and the exotic pathogens Drechslera gigantea (Dg), and Exserohilum rostratum (Er) from the southern USA that showed bioherbicide potential against several grassy weeds. This device is capable of creating multiple diurnal temperature cycles, mimicking daily temperature fluctuations that occur under field conditions. Seven temperature regimes, i.e., 15/10 °C, 20/5 °C, 20/15 °C, 25/10 °C, 25/20 °C, 30/15 °C, and 30/25 °C (maximum/minimum), were used with temperature cycling from maximum to minimum and then back up to maximum in a 24 h period. Ps and Dg were much more virulent than Er on green foxtail, resulting in higher levels of disease and weed control. Dg was little affected by the dew temperatures in terms of plant infection and was more efficacious than Ps under cooler dew temperatures (15/10 °C and 20/5 °C), causing twice as much disease. This greater amount of disease coincided with higher conidial germination, appressorial formation and infection-hypha frequency by Dg at the lower temperatures. The efficacy of Ps improved as dew temperature increased, accompanied by a higher percentage of germination and more frequent appressorial production. Dg caused severe disease 2 d after inoculation whereas Ps required 4 d to initiate disease symptoms. These observations suggest that Dg is a superior candidate than Ps for green foxtail control on the Canadian prairies.  相似文献

Seasonal changes of field populations and growth rates of two dinoflagellates, Ceratium furca and Ceratium fusus, were examined in the temperate coastal water of Sagami Bay, Japan. Weekly field sampling was conducted from August 2002 to August 2003, and laboratory experiments were also carried out to investigate effects of temperature, irradiance and photoperiod on the growth rates of these two Ceratium species. In the field, the abundances of both species increased significantly from April to August 2003, were gradually decreased from November 2002 and were not observed in January 2003. C. fusus was able to increase at lower temperatures in February 2003 compared to C. furca. In the laboratory, the two species did not grow at <10 °C or >32 °C. The highest specific growth rate of C. furca was 0.72 d−1 at 24 °C and 600 μmol m−2 s−1. Optimum growth rates (>0.4 d−1) of C. furca were observed at temperatures from 18 to 28 °C and at irradiances from 216 to 796 μmol m−2 s−1. The highest growth rate of C. fusus was 0.56 d−1 at 26 °C and 216 μmol m−2 s−1. Optimum growth rates of C. fusus were observed at the same irradiance rage of C. furca, whereas optimum temperature range was narrower (26–28 °C). The growth curves of both species indicated saturation of the growth rates when light intensity was above 216 μmol m−2 s−1, and did not show photoinhibition at irradiances up to 796 μmol m−2 s−1. The specific growth rates of both Ceratium species were clearly decreased at L:D = 10:14 relative to those at L:D = 14:10 and L:D = 12:12. The present study indicates the two Ceratium species can adapt to a wide range of temperature and irradiance.  相似文献

Experiment was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of varying water temperature and ration size on growth and body composition of fry of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Common carp fry with an initial body weight (BW) of 0.86 g were fed a diet (34.9% protein, 18.3 KJ/g diet) at four ration sizes 4%, 5%, 6% and 7% of their body weight per day and reared at two water temperatures 28 and 32 °C for 60 days. Fry fed with 6% ration showed the highest mean final body weight at 28 °C. Final body weight was significantly (P<0.05) affected by ration and temperature. Cyprinus carpio fry raised at 28 °C had higher feed efficiency (FE) (44.36%) than the fry reared at 32 °C (40.98%) with 4% ration. Further, feed efficiency decreased with increase in ration levels in both temperatures. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) was higher (1.26) at 28 °C than at 32 °C (1.17). At 6% ration, common carp fry showed highest specific growth rate (SGR) (3.82%/day) at 28 °C as compared with at 32 °C (3.57%/day). A linear increase in protein and lipid contents was evident with increasing ration levels up to 6% body weight at both temperatures 28 and 32 °C. Second-order polynomial regression analysis of weight gain and SGR indicated the breakpoints at ration level 6.04% and 6.08% body weight per day at 28 and 32 °C. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) not affected by temperature and ration size while, viscerosomatic index (VSI) influenced (P<0.05) by ration size and temperature. Based on the above results, it may be concluded that 6% BW/day ration is optimal for growth of Cyprinus carpio fry at both the temperatures 28 and 32 °C.  相似文献

Females can affect male probabilities of paternity success through behavioural, morphological and/or physiological processes occurring during or after copulation. These processes under female-control include the acceptance or rejection of mating attempts by subsequent males. Leucauge mariana is an orb weaving spider that shows male mate guarding of penultimate females, male–male competition on female webs and copulatory plugs, suggesting a polyandric mating system. The aim of the present study was to ascertain whether male behaviour during courtship and copulation in L. mariana relate with female re-mating decisions. Forty-three virgin females were exposed to up to three males until they mated. In 24 cases, the copulatory plug was absent after mating and females were exposed the next day to up to three other males. Eighteen females accepted a second mating. Relatively larger females were more receptive to second matings and were more likely to copulate if the second male was smaller. Longer duration of female tapping and abdominal bobbing during courtship, and first copulations with less short insertions and more flubs, were associated with increased female acceptance to second matings. The results indicate cryptic female choice on male courtship and copulatory performance and suggest female-control over the determination of male mating success in this spider species.  相似文献

The potentially toxic dinoflagellate species Alexandrium affine isolated from Ha Long Bay (Tonkin Gulf), Vietnam was cultured and maintained for morphological, physiological and toxicological studies. Classical morphological examinations including plate pattern were in good agreement with the international nomenclature of the species. The fine structure of A. affine, including morphology of its developmental stages during vegetative and sexual reproduction was found to be typical of other species in the genus. Two general trends in growth of A. Affine from Vietnamese waters were apparent: (1) growth rates were low at low salinities (10 and 15 psu) in all experimental temperatures (21–27 °C); (2) growth rates were high at salinities 25, 30, and 35 psu in all temperatures. There were no significant differences in growth rates at different salinities at low temperature (21 °C), and the most significant difference in growth rate was between high temperature–high salinity and high temperature–low salinity. The optimum temperature and salinity for growth were 24 °C and 30 psu. Maximum division rates per day (0.5–0.7) were at salinities 30 and 35 psu and at temperatures 24 and 27 °C. But the best conditions for division rate were 21 and 24 °C at salinities 30 and 35 psu. Toxicity analyses indicated A. affine to be both toxic and non-toxic at certain times. In the former case, toxicity was very low, 2.28 fmol  per cell; the toxicity component of A. affine was compared with that of A. leei and the mussel Perna viridis including neoSTX, STX, and GTX1–GTX4.  相似文献

Male Pardosa milvina wolf spiders use their pedipalps both for copulation and courtship. Pedipalp loss is significantly more common among adult males compared to females. We measured the courtship and mating effects associated with the loss of one or both pedipalps among adult male P. milvina. Pedipalp loss significantly reduced courtship intensity, but had no influence on mounting success. Intact males were less likely to be cannibalized and suffered fewer predatory attacks by females than autotomized males. Loss of the left pedipalp resulted in significantly less intense courtship, higher female aggression levels, and delayed onset of courtship whereas loss of the right pedipalp minimally affected male and female behavior relative to intact males. Pedipalp displays may function in reducing female aggression rather than increasing female receptivity.  相似文献

以星豹蛛(Pardosa astrigera)为研究对象,在室内对其求偶和交配行为进行了描述。雄蛛"俯卧撑"式动作(push-up)在求偶中具重要作用。交配初期,两侧触肢交替插入;随交配进行,单侧触肢连续插入3~5次后才换另一侧触肢插入,触肢每插入一次,基血囊膨大多次。完整交配一次雄蛛触肢器平均插入次数为29·625。交配前求偶时间、交配持续时间和有效交配时间分别平均为6min、32min25s和11min11s。星豹蛛雄蛛可进行多次交配,而雌蛛一般为单次交配。雌蛛交配状态(是否已经交配)影响其同类相食行为,已交配雌蛛对雄蛛同类相食率显著高于未交配雌蛛对雄蛛同类相食率。  相似文献

Mass production of baculoviruses by in vivo methods is influenced by several factors like larval age at virus treatment, virus concentration and the incubation temperature. The larval age at virus treatment and virus concentration should be synchronized to result in insect death at a fully grown larval stage to maximize the productivity. Since temperature influences both the growth of the larvae and replication of the virus, we evaluated the influence of incubation temperature on mass production of Spodoptera litura nucleopolyhedrovirus (SpltNPV) at four different temperature regimes viz., 25, 30, and 35 °C and room temperature by diet-surface contamination method. Incubation of early fifth instar larvae dosed with 3932.4 polyhedral inclusion bodies (PIB)/mm2 at 25 °C enhanced the virus productivity to 6.623 × 1011 PIB yield/100 inoculated larvae, while it was only 1.779 × 1011 at 35 °C. The disease progression in the virus treated larvae was slow with median lethal time (LT50) of 208 h at 25 °C as compared to 136 h at 35 °C. In spite of the slow death which means lower production cycles/year, the productivity/year was higher at 25 °C than at other temperatures. The SpltNPV produced at 25 °C was also found to be of superior quality in terms of low bacterial contaminants than at 35 °C. Neonate larval bioassay conducted with viruses produced at different temperature treatments revealed that they were similar in their activity and virulence. Hence our results indicate that maintenance of the SpltNPV production facility at 25 °C would enhance both the virus productivity and quality.  相似文献
