Understanding the reproductive potential of any species is of great importance for resource assessment and management. We studied the reproductive biology of Bigeye Tuna, Thunnus obesus, based on 1283 samples taken from the Chinese longline vessels in the eastern and central Tropical Pacific Ocean during February through November 2006. The female-male ratio was 1.0 : 1.5 and males were predominant in all length classes except for the length class of 166–170 cm (fork length). Males dominated in sizes larger than 171 cm, all specimens of 192 cm or larger were males. The main spawning period of Bigeye Tuna was between March and November. Gonadosomatic rates of males were larger than those of females. Statistically, female and male Bigeye Tuna had no significant reproductive seasonality. The observed minimum length at sexual maturity for female Bigeye Tuna was 94 cm. Length at 50% sexual maturity of female Bigeye Tuna was estimated at 107.8 cm, and maturation rate was 0.106 cm−1. The results derived in this study provide the information critical to our understanding of key life history parameters of Bigeye Tuna in tropic Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) has been known for over a century, but its origin remains poorly understood. Because both latitude and species richness are broadly related to temperature, environmental temperature has been proposed as a driver of the LDG. Recently, Wang et al. (2009, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, 106 ,13388–13392) used datasets compiled from tree distributions in eastern Asia and North America to compare the species richness?temperature relationship between the two regions at several spatial scales and framed their analyses in the context of the metabolic theory of ecology. Here, we show that their datasets lack comparability between eastern Asia and North America and that some aspects of their analyses probably biased their results, casting doubt on some of their conclusions.  相似文献

Summary A series of experiments was done to determine the best conditions for the extraction of protein from mould spores (Penicillium roqueforti). These experiments included studies on the influence of the extraction technique, the nature of the extracting fluid, spores glass: beads: extracting fluid ratio, and the time of extraction.Some work was done in fractionating the extractable nitrogenous substances and proteins of the spores. It was found that the extracted nitrogen could be fractionated into 12% dialysable low molecular weight nitrogen compounds and 88% crude protein, the latter was made up of about 40% albumens and 60% globulins.Visiting Research Professor, on scientific leave from National Research Center, Cairo, U.A.R.; Appointment supported by the International Cooperation Administration under the Visiting Research Scientists Program administered by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. 生物膜研究是现代生物学研究的前沿方向之一,本文对文革结束以后生物膜研究在中国科学院生物物理研究所(下称生物物理所)的兴起与发展进行了系统回顾.文革结束后,中国科学院领导了解到国外生物膜研究迅速发展的情况,迅即派遣以生物物理所杨福愉为组长,包括生物化学研究所、动物研究所、植物研究所、上海实验生物研究所等六人的代表团前往联邦德国进行考察.考察结束后院领导根据多学科交叉对生物膜研究的重要作用,组织了生物物理所、植物所、中国医学科学院、北京医科大学等单位联合申报国家自然科学基金委员会重大项目"膜脂-膜蛋白的相互作用及其在医学和农业上的应用",并获得立项.与此同时,院领导建议由中国生物物理学会、中国生化学会和中国细胞生物学会共同组织生物膜学术讨论会.首次会议于1979年3月在北京友谊宾馆举行,以后每3年召开1次,从未中断,有力地促进了生物膜研究的交流与发展.2003年举行的第200届香山会议专门组织讨论21世纪生物膜研究在中国的布局,进一步推动了生物膜研究的发展.本文还重点阐述了中国科学院生物物理研究所在生物膜研究方面所取得的代表性成果:a.金属离子通过膜脂-膜蛋白相互作用调控生物膜能量转换、物质运输及信号转导的分子机制;b.提出"克山病是一种心肌线粒体病"的重要观点;c.发现溶酶体内含有为量甚微、一般认为是消化酶的胰凝乳蛋白酶,并阐明了它通过溶酶体膜外泄后参与细胞凋亡的作用机制;d.确定了通过调控线粒体动态变化而干预肿瘤细胞迁移侵袭的新靶标.最后,特别值得一提的是,2004年,常文瑞与植物研究所匡廷云等在《自然》(Nature)发表了《菠菜中主要捕光色素复合体2.72魡分辨率的晶体结构分析》的研究论文,2005年饶子和与徐建兴等在《细胞》(Cell)发表了《猪心线粒体呼吸链复合体Ⅱ的晶体结构》的研究论文,充分标志着我国生物膜研究已在国际上占据一席之地.2004年,徐涛研究员因其在囊泡转运方面的丰厚学术积淀,作为首席科学家组织一批生物膜专家承担了国内首个生物膜973项目,这标志着国内生物膜研究开始进入一个新的发展时期.  相似文献

A meeting was held May 19, 2010 at the Karolinski Institute on Nomenclature in Pharmacology. This meeting occurred in conjunction with the Symposium The Changing World of G Protein Coupled Receptors: From Monomers to Dimers and Receptor Mosaics (Higher-order Oligomers) held the previous day at the Royal Swedish Academy of Science. Two broad topics of nomenclature were discussed; ligand nomenclature and the definition of ‘receptor–receptor’ interactions. In February 1975, in Pacific Grove, California, the Asilomar Conference took place, sponsored by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and convened by the Academy's Committee on Recombinant DNA Molecules, of which Paul Berg was the Chairman. This conference recommended guidelines for recombinant DNA research, and the history of subsequent sets of guidelines formed the major theme of six articles that appeared in Vol. 1 of BioEssays, authored by Dewitt Stetten, Jr, with the collaboration of William Gartland and Bernard Talbot and entitled ‘The Road to Asilomar: Reminiscences of the Recombinant DNA Story’.1 The U.S. National Research Council recently commissioned for its News Report (volume XXXV, March 1985, 1A–16A) a retrospective article on Asilomar, written by Susan Walton. Sorbus cibagouensis sp. nov. (Rosaceae subfam. Rosaceae), a new taxon from Cibagou National Nature Reserve, Zayü County, southeastern Xizang (Tibet), China, is described and illustrated. It is related to S. monbeigii (Cardot) Balakr., but primarily differs in the number of styles (S. cibagouensis = 5; S. monbeigii = 4) and the shape of stipules and leaves (S. cibagouensis: stipules caducous, small, with entire margin, leaflets in 9–11 pairs; S. monbeigii: stipules persistent, large, serrate, leaflets in 6–8 (–10) pairs).  相似文献

The metabolic theory of ecology (MTE) endeavours to explain ecosystem structure and function in terms of the effects of temperature and body size on metabolic rate. In a recent paper (Wang et al., 2009, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, 106 , 13388), we tested the MTE predictions of species richness using tree distributions in eastern Asia and North America. Our results supported the linear relationship between log‐transformed species richness and the inverse of absolute temperature predicted by the MTE, but the slope strongly depends on spatial scale. The results also indicate that there are more tree species in cold climate at high latitudes in North America than in eastern Asia, but the reverse is true in warm climate at low latitudes. Qian & Ricklefs (2011, Global Ecology and Biogeography, 20 , 362–365) recently questioned our data and some of the analyses. Here we reply to them, and provide further analyses to show that their critiques are primarily based on unsuitable data and subjective conjecture.  相似文献

Individual-site isotherms for the binding of bacteriophage λ repressor to the left and right λ operators have been determined [D. F. Senear, M. Brenowitz, M. A. Shea, and G. K. Ackers (1986) Biochemistry, Vol. 25, pp. 7344–7354.] using the DNAse protection technique [ footprinting; D. J. Galas and A. Schmitz (1978) Nucleic Acids Research, Vol. 5, pp. 3157–3170]. These extensive data have been interpreted with a quantitative model that emphasized cooperative interactions between adjacently bound ligands [occupied ? occupied interactions; G. K. Ackers, A. D. Johnson, and M. A. Shea (1982) Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, USA, Vol. 79, pp. 1129–1133]. Overlooked in this model are the effects of cooperative interactions between a site containing a bound ligand and its neighboring unoccupied site (occupied ? unoccupied interactions). This paper reinterprets the existing data with a model that considers occupied ? unoccupied as well as occupied ? occupied interactions. The results yield parameters that differ substantially from those already reported. ABSTRACT

Near reef abundance and coast–offshore distribution of tuna larvae around Minicoy Island were studied based on three cruises carried out on board FORV Sagar Sampada during 2014–15. The samples were collected by oblique tows using bongo twin nets (300 micron) for three seasons (Fall inter-monsoon (FIM), Spring inter-monsoon (SIM) and Summer monsoon (SM)) in six on–offshore stations ranging from 1 to 20?km off-shore of the Minicoy. Results indicated that the tuna larvae aggregate in the near reef waters and total tuna larvae abundance (all the species combined) shows a decreasing trend towards off-shore. Tuna larvae are found to be more abundant during SM and FIM. Comparison of the species-wise variation in tuna larvae for one season (SM) indicated that the larvae of Euthunnus affinis (32.5%) dominated among the tuna species, followed by Auxis spp. (31.6%), Thunnus spp. (3.9%) and Katsuwonus pelamis (2.7%). A pattern of highest larvae abundance in the near reef areas was observed except for Thunnus larvae. GAM indicated that mean seawater temperature and mean seawater salinity are the major environmental factors that significantly influence the larvae abundance, particularly for Thunnus followed by Katsuwonus pelamis, E. affinis and Auxis spp. The study confirms that the environmental parameters show high variation between stations and among transects as a result of the complex oceanographic characteristics around the islands. Further studies with better understanding of the larvae dynamics and their association with the environmental parameters including physical processes are essential to elucidate these relationships more clearly.  相似文献

A recent study using both mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellite data reported on a population size discrepancy in the eastern tiger salamander where the effective population size (Ne) estimate of the former exceeded that of the latter. That study suggested, among other hypotheses, that homoplasy of microsatellite alleles is responsible for the discrepancy. In this investigation, we report 10 new cases of a similar discrepancy in five species of tuna. These cases derive from our Bayesian inferences using data from Pacific Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus orientalis) and Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares), as well as from published estimates of genetic diversity for additional populations of Yellowfin Tuna and three other tuna species. Phylogenetic character analyses of inferred genealogies of Pacific Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna reveal similar reduced levels of mtDNA and microsatellite homoplasy. Thus, the discrepancy between inferred population sizes from mtDNA and microsatellite data in tuna is most likely not an artifact of the chosen mutation models used in the microsatellite analyses, but may reflect behavioral differences between the sexes such as female-biased philopatry and male-biased dispersal. This explanation now warrants critical testing with more local populations of tuna and with other animal and plant groups that have different life histories.  相似文献

A review of the Palaearctic species of the Eurytoma cynipsea group with 15 species is given. A key to species is provided. A new species, Eurytoma melikai sp. n. from Iran, is described. Eu. melikai sp. n. is most closely related to Eu. hybrida Zer., but differs in the shorter and globular metasoma in the female and the thicker and darker marginal vein in both sexes. This contribution is a reply to and a commentary on the article by David A. Colson and Dr. Peggy Hoyle, "Satisfying the Procedural Prerequisites to the Compulsory Dispute Settlement Mechanisms of the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention: Did the Southern Bluefin Tuna Tribunal Get It Right?" 34(1) Ocean Development & International Law 59-82 (2003). Colson and Hoyle took the view that Southern Bluefin Tuna Tribunal did not reach the correct answer. The author's survey of the Southern Bluefin Tuna and the Mox Plant cases, in light of the doctrine of procedural and substantive parallelism between the umbrella UN Law of the Sea Convention and its numerous implementing special treaties covered by Articles 281-282, leads her to conclude that the Southern Bluefin Tuna Arbitral Tribunal did get it right.­  相似文献

Sequencing them all. That is the ambitious goal of the recently launched Earth BioGenome project (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 115, 4325–4333), which aims to produce reference genomes for all eukaryotic species within the next decade. In this perspective, we discuss the opportunities of this project with a plant focus, but highlight also potential limitations. This includes the question of how to best capture all plant diversity, as the green taxon is one of the most complex clades in the tree of life, with over 300 000 species. For this, we highlight four key points: (i) the unique biological insights that could be gained from studying plants, (ii) their apparent underrepresentation in sequencing efforts given the number of threatened species, (iii) the necessity of phylogenomic methods that are aware of differences in genome complexity and quality, and (iv) the accounting for within‐species genetic diversity and the historical aspect of conservation genetics.  相似文献

cDNA for mRNA of tuna growth hormone (GH) was cloned by screening a cDNA library constructed from tuna pituitary gland poly(A)+ RNA. The nucleotide sequence of cDNA (911 bases) revealed an open reading frame of 615 nucleotides, including a sequence (51 bases) for a possible secretory protein leader peptide. Noncoding regions were found in the nucleotide sequences up- (5′-terminal: 65 bases) and down- (3′-terminal: 231 bases) stream of the open reading frame. An amino-acid sequence deduced from the nucleotide sequence of the cDNA was identical with that determined in the purified tuna GH. Tuna GH was composed of 187 amino acids, and had a calculated molecular weight of 21275. Amino-acid sequencing showed that there was one possible N-glycosylation site at Asn (Asn-Cys-Thr). Tuna GH showed amino-acid sequence homologies with chum salmon (67%), yellow tail (90%) and with human (32%) growth hormones.  相似文献
