Marked changes in the relative numbers of roach Rutilus rulilus (L.), rudd Scardinius erylhroplhalmus (L.) and perch Perca fIuviatilis L. , in Slapton Ley, Devon, have been observed over the period 1967–1978. Historically, the lake had been dominated by rudd and perch; significant numbers of roach were not thought to be present until 1967. From then onwards the roach population exhibited a considerable expansion, apparently replacing the rudd, which had virtually disappeared by 1974. In 1975 extensive mortalities of roach were caused by the pseudophyllidean cestode Ligula intestinalis L. During 1976 and 1977 larger number of rudd, belonging to the 1975 and 1976 year classes, were present, suggesting that the roach mortalities might be giving the rudd a chance to recover. However, very few rudd were present during 1978, possibly because lower incidences of ligulosis during 1976–1978 had allowed the roach to recover from the main outbreak of the disease in 1975, and to replace the rudd for the second time. Evidence from trap catches indicated that the perch population had shown a consistent decline between 1970 and 1977. The major phase of this decrease occurred between 1971 and 1973, when the roach population was increasing the most rapidly. Comparisons were made with changes in fish populations in other localities. The major reason for the changes observed was thought to be a competitive relationship between the plankton feeding younger stages, with roach being the dominant species, although other factors may also have been involved.  相似文献

The biology of pike, Esox lucius L., in a southern productive lowland lake is described. Scales and opercular bones were difficult to read and interpret, and growth estimated had perforce to be based on scale readings. Growth of Slapton pike is average and intermediate between recorded extremes. Both male and female pike reached maximum condition in February, just prior to spawning. The population of pike of over 450 mm fork length in the lake was estimated at 870·6 ± 389·3 in 1975, and 950·4 ± 143.3 in 1976/77. This leads to the conclusion that the pike population has one of the highest biomasses per surface area of water ever recorded. Number of pike per unit area of surface was also high, despite the fact that a significant proportion of the population (fish under 450 mm) could not be adequately sampled. Mean instantaneous mortality rate was 0·53, and mean instantaneous survival rate was 0·59. The roach provided the main item of diet of the pike, with perch taken less readily. Immature pike ate a significant proportion of invertebrates, but roach was again a common feature of the diet of even small fish. Two spawning migrations were identified; at other times of the year, pike were non territorial. The majority of pike spawned in March. Fecundity of a sample of females was assessed. A method of estimating the population density of roach in Tjeukemeer (21.3 km2) using 20 529 introduced fin-clipped fish is described. Fyke nets proved to be an effective method of sampling the population for marked fish during the spawning season. A total of 20 277 roach were processed during the recapturing period. The population density of roach (⋝ 14 cm) was estimated to be 1 246 458. The growth rate of roach in the lake although relatively poor (von Bertalanffy's L ∞ for males and females, 22 and 26 cm respectively) for the species was similar to that recorded in three other Friesian lakes. The mortality rate of males was higher than that of females. Logarithmic length-weight regression analyses showed that the value of the coefficient varied both within and between the sexes, that of females being higher (range 3.03–3.375) than that of males (range 2.76–3.254). Seasonal changes in the size of the coefficient were due to a disproportionate loss of gonad weight in larger fish. The fecundity of the population was comparatively high for the species.
The total production of the population was estimated to be 95 hg ha−1 of which 39 kg ha−1 was contributed by fry. In older (⋝ IV) fish the production of females (12 kg ha−1) exceeded that (2 kg ha−1) of males, due to differences in their growth and mortality rates. The relatively poor performance of roach in Tjeukemeer, in terms of biomass and production was due to a scarcity of zoobenthos and competition from other species offish. There is no evidence either from this study or the literature that the productive potential of roach in lakes is high, even though macrophytes and detritus can be consumed in significant amounts.  相似文献

Investigations into the biology of the roach and the pathogenic tapeworm Ligula intestinalis (L.) populations at Slapton Ley, Devon were carried out between October 1982 and December 1984. Data collected from the lake since 1977 have also been re-analysed to determine how the dramatic improvement in the individual growth rate of the roach over this period may have affected the growth, maturation and life-cycle of Ligula. Only the very young roach at this site become infected, so it was possible to follow cohorts of plerocercoids of similar age through each roach year class. Results for the 1978 and 1983 year classes are presented in detail. The roach grew extremely rapidly from May to August in each year, resulting in a pronounced cyclical pattern of changes in the condition of the roach, with the lowest condition occurring in late winter and spring. The yearly increase in the roach growth rate was accompanied by an increase in plerocercoid growth rate in the 0 + roach, but not in the 1 + roach. The growth rate of the plerocercoids was very high compared to that at other sites. It is usual for the parasite index (PI) of Ligula-infected fish to be high and to increase throughout their first few years of life. At Slapton, however, a lack of multiple infections has prevented high PIs from occurring, and in recent years the growth rate of the roach has been so high that the plerocercoids were unable to maintain a high weight relative to the fish, and the highest PIs occurred in the 0 + roach throughout late winter and spring. In recent year classes, therefore, the maximum PIs and highest pathogenicities coincided with the period of lowest condition in the 0+ roach. Observations of both caged and natural populations of 0+ roach over winter showed that a significant loss of roach containing the larger plerocercoids occurred from the population. In vitro cultivation of Ligula plerocercoids showed that they were capable of maturation at weights of 0.5 g, and only 6 months after having infected the roach. The increase of the growth rate of the plerocercoids in the 0+ roach has therefore resulted in a greater proportion of these plerocercoids being capable of infecting the definitive host. As a result of the increase in individual growth rate of the roach at Slapton, the potential for Ligula transmission, as measured in terms of both their pathogenicity and maturity, has shifted from the 1 + to the 0+ roach.  相似文献

Lake Vesijärvi, southern Finland, suffered sewere eutrophication by sewage effluent from the city of Lahti during the 1960's and the early 1970's. The municipal sewage loading was diverted from the lake in 1976 and the lake started to recover. However, in the 1980's blue-green algal blooms increased again and the recovery of the lake faded. Enclosure experiments demonstrated that high roach (Rutilus rutilus) biomass is one of the key factors in the fading recovery of the lake. In this study, the influence of roach and another cyprinid fish species (bleak, Alburnus alburnus) to planktonic algal productivity and biomass in Lake Vesijärvi was examined. Enclosure experiments in the field showed the impacts of planktivorous bleak on water quality; in an enclosure with a density of 1 fish m–2 average daily algal production (1370 mg C m–2) and chlorophyll-a concentration (50–90 µg 1–1) were more than twice that in an enclosure without fish. Laboratory experiments showed that the availability of planktonic food affects the foraging behaviour of roach and consequently the internal nutrient loading from the sediment into the water. Roach caused the highest phosphorus loading and turbidity when there was no zooplanktonic food available in the water. The possible interactions between planktivorous and omnivorous fish species are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of fish predation on the zooplankton community in an oligotrophic lake, Langvatn, near Trondheim in Central Norway, were investigated during a six-year period (1973–1978), together with the added effects of changes produced by adding artificial fertilizer in 1975 and 1976. The improved nutrient conditions in 1975 resulted in a rapid increase in biomass and production of the largest herbivore zooplankton species and of the fish population. A change in the behaviour and food habits of the arctic char was recorded; they became more pelagic and fed mainly on zooplankton. An increased survival rate of 0-group and biomass of planktivorous fish in 1975 enhanced the degree of fish predation on the zooplankton during subsequent years (1976–1978). As a consequence of fish predation, the composition of the zooplankton changed, from a mainly large-sized to a mainly small-sized community, dominated by Bosmina longirostris and rotifers. Since fish predation is size-selective and visibility-dependent, it induced a decrease in mean size and in body length at onset of maturity of the cladoceran populations and probably also weakened their ability to produce resting eggs.  相似文献

Disruption in gonadal development of wild roach living in U.K. rivers receiving large volumes of treated sewage effluent is manifest in a variety of ways, ranging from malformation of the germ cells and/or reproductive ducts to altered gamete production. Intersex fish were also found to have an altered endocrine status and an elevated concentration of plasma vitellogenin. Gonadal growth was inhibited only in severely intersex fish, whereas progression of spermatogenesis was delayed in a large proportion of all intersex and exposed male fish. In contrast to the effects observed in the intersex and exposed male fish, the maturation of ovaries in female fish inhabiting effluent-contaminated rivers appeared to be less obviously affected, although a higher incidence of oocyte atresia was found in the effluent-exposed fish compared with the reference fish. A positive correlation was found between the proportion of female tissue in the gonads of intersex fish and their plasma vitellogenin concentration, suggesting that vitellogenin can be an indicator for the level of gonadal disruption in intersex roach. The estradiol-17beta concentration in intersex fish was intermediate between the concentration found in males and females, and the plasma testosterone was between 2- and 3-fold higher in intersex fish compared with male fish. These data suggest a link between altered endocrine status in intersex and female fish and gonadal disruption. Spermiation was also affected in roach living in effluent-impacted rivers: a lower proportion of fish were found releasing sperm, and in those intersex fish that were spermiating, a reduced milt volume and a reduced sperm density were found. All intersex fish had malformations of the reproductive duct(s), and in severely affected fish, the ducts were occluded, thus preventing release of gametes. In view of the widespread occurrence of intersexuality in wild fish populations in rivers throughout the United Kingdom, assessment of the reproductive capabilities of these intersex roach is clearly needed to understand the impact of this phenomenon on roach fertility.  相似文献

Freshwater fishery management is treated as a dynamic system comprising environment protection and improvement, fishing, fishery resources allocation, fish stocking programs and marketing policy. The aims of the plan are to increase the economic value of the catch and to protect the professional fishery. Fisheries statistics, catch per unit effort data and other material were collected during 1972–1976. The total allowable catch (TAC) for the most important fish species was estimated with MSY and population analysis models. The results of fish stockings were studied by tagging and population analysis calculations. Fishing of vendace and non-valuable species (perch, roach, smelt) can be increased, but the fishing pressure on other species should not be raised above the present level. Restrictions on whitefish fishing are needed in some areas. A balanced multispecies fishery is desirable, and suggestions are given for the composition of the fishing gear. Fish stocking can make possible a larger and more valuable catch, but at present its profitability is rather low. The stocking results are strongly affected by the fishery and the gear composition.  相似文献

Collections made from the cooling water intake screens of Power Stations in the Severn Estuary and the Bristol Channel have been used to investigate the biology of O-group herrings in this region. The abundance of herrings at Oldbury, the principal sampling site, was low in most years and in five successive seasons between July 1972 and December 1976, large numbers were caught only between the summer of 1975 and the spring of 1976. The herrings were first observed in July, when many had still not completed metamorphosis, and reached peak numbers in September and October during which period they were clearly growing. Numbers declined in December before rising dramatically in January at which time the length-frequency curves displayed a pronounced bimodality. On the basis of data from other parts of the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary, it is suggested that this bimodality is due to the influx of some animals from other regions where the growth rate was greater. Although movement is apparently taking place at this time and the numbers decline markedly in subsequent months, the last remnants of the population do not leave the estuary until early May. Post-pelvic scute (K2) and vertebral counts (VS) of 13.82 and 55.24 respectively, indicate that the Severn Estuary herrings are the product of a spring spawning stock, a view entirely consistent with length and field data.  相似文献

The growth of 0-group roach in a chalk-fed river is traced over six seasons and the growth compared to that in a nearby gravel pit. The growth rate, the daily weight increase and the condition of the fish are all highest during the summer, falling to a minimum over the winter period and rising again in the spring. Considerable yearly variation in the growth of roach in the river was observed and correlated with water temperatures above 14° C. It is suggested that water temperature, acting through the food supply, is the dominant factor governing growth. The hot summer of 1976 appears to have resulted in excellent growth of roach in both habitats.  相似文献

The ecology of roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus (L.), populations from different regions of the R. Exe catchment was studied. Dace were the predominant cyprinid in the middle reaches whilst roach dominated in the slow-flowing lower reaches. Each species showed maximum growth rate and reproductive effort in its preferred habitat, i.e. where it dominated the fish community. The diet of roach consisted mainly of vegetable material, whilst dace were omnivorous. Although each species had a characteristic diet, there was considerable overlap. There was little evidence that variability between regions in growth rates of each species resulted from competition for food.  相似文献

The population biology of metacercariae of Centrocestus formosanus (Nishigori, 1924) on the gills of the larvivorous fish, Aplocheilus panchax (Hamilton) was investigated based on data from examination of monthly samples of fish collected from a stream at Visakhapatnam during the period December 1983 to April 1986. The seasonal dynamics, dispersion pattern and long-term changes were studied. No seasonality in prevalence and density of infection with metacercariae was observed. The recruitment of metacercariae occurred throughout the year. An increase in density of infection with increase in size of the fish was noted. Possible reasons for the observed distribution are discussed. The frequency distribution of the metacercariae followed the negative binomial at different times of the year. The data indicated an increase in degree of overdispersion with increase in size offish except for a slight drop in the largest size class. Long-term changes in the abundance of metacercariae are given and a decline in parasite population abundance is noted.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that fish populations are regulated primarily in the juvenile (pre-recruit) phase of the life cycle, although density dependence in growth and reproductive parameters within the recruited phase has been widely reported. Here we present evidence to suggest that density-dependent growth in the recruited phase is a key process in the regulation of many fish populations. We analyse 16 fish populations with long-term records of size-at-age and biomass data, and detect significant density-dependent growth in nine. Among-population comparisons show a close, inverse relationship between the estimated decline in asymptotic length per unit biomass density, and the long-term average biomass density of populations. A simple population model demonstrates that regulation by density-dependent growth alone is sufficient to generate the observed relationship. Density-dependent growth should be accounted for in fisheries' assessments, and the empirical relationship established here can provide indicative estimates of the density-dependent growth parameter where population-specific data are lacking.  相似文献

Dwarf individuals are observed in many species of freshwater fish. This paper studies the potential causes of such stunted growth. We present a model which describes the effect of growth conditions on the age- and size-structure of fish populations. The model parameters are chosen to characterize a Eurasian perch population. Two possible causes of stunting are identified: resource limitation and size- or age-dependent survival probabilities. While the former mechanism often arises from intraspecific density dependence, the latter is of particular relevance in the context of interspecific interactions and fishing. After evaluating the immediate ecological consequences of these factors, we examine the potential for life-history adaptations in stunted fish populations. Interactions between the ecological and adaptive mechanisms of stunting are shown to be intricate: not only does the age at maturity of individuals affect their growth trajectories, but, in addition, alterations in growth conditions can result in different adaptively stable ages at maturity. We show that such adaptive responses can either alleviate or amplify stunting caused by ecological factors. Life-history adaptation may also lead to the persistence of stunting when ecological factors alone would allow for normal growth. An appreciation of the interplay between ecological and adaptive factors therefore is critical for understanding the causes and mechanisms of stunted growth. The biology of a Scottish population of the small bothid flatfish, Arnoglossus laterna , was studied from January 1975 until September 1976. The data were taken from monthly samples totalling over 500 fish trawled in 18–36 m on a soft mud bottom. Otoliths were used for age determination and a growth curve was constructed which showed that most growth occurs in the first 2–3 years of life. The maximum age recorded was 8+ years. The fish first mature sexually in their second year at a standard length of 6–7 cm and the short spawning season lasts from the late June to August. Fecundity is length-dependent and the relationship could be described by the regression equation: log fecundity = 3·3472 log standard length (mm) -2·1064. The diet consists mainly of decapod crustaceans (particularly crangonid shrimps), polychaetes, mysids and small fish.  相似文献

Investigations into the biology of the roach population at Slapton Ley, Devon, U.K. were carried out between October 1982 and December 1984 and data collected from the lake since 1977 have been re-analysed to assist interpretation. The roach population has been characterized in recent years by extreme year class variation and a tendency for year classes to alternate in strength. The survival of the roach was very poor, and the spawning population therefore consisted largely of 2-and some 3-year-old fish. Consequently, the size of the spawning stock was small and dependent on the strengths of the year classes that it contained. Recruitment to many year classes was probably limited by the size of the spawning stock. The occurrence of a poor year class in the population would therefore set up an autonomous cycle of poor recruitment to alternate year classes in a manner similar to many tropical marine fisheries. Observation of other British roach populations showed that a short life-span may be associated with conditions that promote very rapid growth rates. The growth rate of individual roach at Slapton was found to be one of the fastest in Britain, and this was apparently due to the very high productivity of Slapton Ley together with the persistence of the roach population at very low densities.  相似文献

To clarify the dynamics and regulation of oogenesis in single- and multiple-spawning cyprinid fish with group-synchronous oocyte development, a multidisciplinary approach to their reproduction was undertaken using three species from the River Meuse (Belgium): the roach Rutilus rutilus as a single spawner, and the bleak Alburnus alburnus and the white bream Blicca bjoerkna as multiple spawners. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histomorphometric changes (distribution of oocyte size, relative proportion of the various oocyte stages) in the ovary are compared. Different patterns of GSI and oocyte growth were observed both between the single- and multiple-spawner fish and between the two multiple spawners. Maximum GSIs were higher in roach (21%) than in bleak and white bream (17.7 and 14.5%, respectively), and compared to the rapid decline of GSI in the roach population, the GSI of multiple spawners decreased progressively during the spawning season. In roach, a short gonadal quiescent period and an early onset of vitellogenesis was recorded from late summer onwards whereas, in bleak and white bream, exogenous vitellogenesis was not systematically observed before winter. A protracted spawning season and/or a low water temperature in autumn are hypothesized to explain this long period of gonadal quiescence. In bleak, during the spawning season, the oocytes recruited arose from the stock of endogenous vitellogenesis and attained the final maturation stage very rapidly. This recruitment occurred during the whole spawning season. In white bream, the differentiation of vitellogenic oocytes from smaller oocytes was completed before the onset of the spawning season. During the spawning period, the proportion of vitellogenic oocytes decreased progressively whereas the percentage of oocytes in the final maturation stage remained approximately constant.  相似文献

The influence of draining a large reservoir (Pareloup, South of France) on the population structure and the growth of roach is studied in this work. This reservoir, with an area of 13 km2, drained in June 1993, was refilled 2 months later. Fish were sampled monthly before draining (1981) and after refilling (1997) by nylon monofilament gill nets used at the same catching effort for both periods. This permitted a comparison to be made between the density of roach and length distribution before and after refilling. Changes in growth were determined by scalimetry. The observed difference in population structure and growth underlined that the differences are mainly due to a greater growth rate after refilling during the first 2 years of roach life. These growth changes are explained by the decrease in roach density and the increase in 1993 of the biomass of Zooplankton, which constitute the main feeding resource for 0+ and 1+ roach. The study led us to propose hypotheses on the ecological significance of growth changes induced by refilling, which can be considered as a rejuvenation of the aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Piscivores (annual stocking of 1000 individuals ha?1 of 0+ pike and a single stocking of 30 kg ha?1 of large 20–30 cm perch) were stocked in seven consecutive years in a shallow eutrophic lake in Denmark. The stocking programme aimed at changing food‐web structure by reducing zooplanktivorous and benthivorous fish, with resultant effects on lower trophic levels and ultimately water quality. 2. The fish community and water quality parameters (Secchi depth, concentrations of total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and suspended solids) were monitored between 1996 and 2000 and relationships were evaluated between predatory fish and potential prey and between zooplanktivorous or benthivorous fish and water quality parameters. In addition, potential consumption of piscivorous fishes was calculated. 3. The density of fish feeding on larger zooplankton or benthos (roach >15 cm, crucian carp >15 cm) declined distinctly during the study period. This effect was attributed to predation by large (>50 cm) pike. Based on scale readings, we cautiously suggest that the stocking of 0+ pike boosted the adult pike population to produce an unexpected impact in later years. Conversely, no direct impact of stocked 0+ pike was detected on 0+ roach. 4. A major decline in the recruitment strength of 0+ roach was observed in 2000. A combination of (i) the indirect effect of large pike preying on adult roach, with negative effect on roach reproduction and (ii) the direct predation effect of 0+ pike and/or 1+ and 2+ perch recruited in the lake, provides the most likely explanation of this phenomenon. 5. A marked increase in Secchi depth in 2000 and declining trends in suspended solids, chlorophyll‐a and total phosphorus concentrations were observed. These changes may also be attributable to changes in the fish community, although the relationships were not straightforward. 6. This 7‐year study indicates that piscivorous fish may be a significant structuring force in shallow eutrophic lakes, suggesting that stocking piscivores can increase predation pressure on cyprinids. However, the general lack of impact of 0+ pike points to the need of refining current stocking practices in several countries across Europe.  相似文献
