Crepis capillaris, Hieracium pilosella, and Hypochaeris radicata were investigated for the influence of the altitude of the collection site on the content of phenolics within the flowering heads. These three taxa from the Lactuceae tribe of the Asteraceae family originate from Europe and are now widespread within New Zealand. Flowering heads collected from different altitudes ranging from 180 m to 1060 m (C. capillaris), from 190 to 1290 m (H. pilosella), and from 20 m to 1290 m (H. radicata), respectively, were extracted and analysed by high performance liquid chromatography. Results showed a positive correlation between the altitude of the growing site and the contents of flavonoids and phenolic acids for all investigated taxa. The altitudinal effect was, however, partially concealed by geographic differences between coastal and inland collection sites, with the inland collections containing higher concentrations of flavonoids and phenolic acids than plants collected from the coast. The results are discussed in the light of a putative UV-B protective function of the quantified compounds and of the immigration histories of the three species at hand.  相似文献

In France, whinchat Saxicola rubetra populations now rarely breed at altitudes below 1,000 m except in flooded alluvial plains. Whinchat reproductive success, the timing of haymaking and meadow bird density were assessed in 2003 in six areas selected in three different flooded plains, in five areas from two massifs at altitudes ranging from 990 to 1,250 m, and in 2004 in six areas of three flooded plains, in seven areas from three massifs at altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 2,000 m. The percentage of whinchat territories in which juveniles were observed was negatively correlated with mown areas at the time when 80% of hatched broods (observation of prey carryings by adults) would theoretically be fledged. Additionally, assessed hatching success was negatively correlated with early haymaking in 2003 and with meadow passerine territory density in 2004. In upland meadows, whinchat populations exhibited either low reproductive success and low density (1,200 m) or high reproductive success and high density (1,200 m). In lowland flooded meadow however, high density could match low reproductive success and whinchat population then acts as a sink population. We conclude that adequate agri-environmental policy should not focus only on lowland meadows, even if the highest meadow bird diversity is often found there.  相似文献

A fluorescence-based AFLP fingerprinting was applied to investigate genetic diversity in 22 natural populations of two wheatgrasses from Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau at different altitudes: the hexaploid Elymus nutans Griseb and the tetraploid E. burchan-buddae (Nevski) Tzvelev (Poaceae). Five selective primer combinations used in this study generated a total of 637 AFLP fragments across all the samples, with 612 fragments in E. nutans and 570 in E. burchan-buddae. About 45% of the scored fragments were <200 bp and about 13% of the fragments were >400 bp. Results showed that genetic diversity within populations of the two Elymus species increased gradually with the increase in altitudes from the lowest sampling sites (2800 m) and reached a plateau at the medium altitudes, and then started to decrease with the increase in altitudes. Regression analysis demonstrated a clear pattern between the expected heterozygosity (H e) or Shannon index (I) and altitude variation, where the highest H e values (0.3449 for E. nutans and 0.3167 E. burchan-buddae) and I values (0.5123 and 0.4759) were expected at the altitudes 3399 m and 3418 m across all sampling sites, respectively for E. nutans and E. burchan-buddae. In other words, higher genetic diversity was observed in populations occurring at the medium altitudes (3200–3600 m) than those at the low and high altitudes for the two Elymus species. Principal coordinate analysis (PCA) did not show clear association between genetic relationships of populations and their occurrences at a particular altitude. The above results suggest that efforts for conservation and utilization of two wheatgrasses species should focus more on populations occurring at the medium altitudes.  相似文献

The diversity of the five single nucleotide polymorphisms located in genes of the TP53 pathway (TP53, rs1042522; MDM2, rs2279744; MDM4, rs1563828; USP7, rs1529916; and LIF, rs929271) were studied in a total of 282 individuals belonging to Quechua, Aymara, Chivay, Cabanaconde, Yanke, Taquile, Amantani, Anapia, Uros, Guarani Ñandeva, and Guarani Kaiowá populations, characterized as Native American or as having a high level (> 90%) of Native American ancestry. In addition, published data pertaining to 100 persons from five other Native American populations (Surui, Karitiana, Maya, Pima, and Piapoco) were analyzed. The populations were classified as living in high altitude (≥ 2,500 m) or in lowlands (< 2,500 m). Our analyses revealed that alleles USP7-G, LIF-T, and MDM2-T showed significant evidence that they were selected for in relation to harsh environmental variables related to high altitudes. Our results show for the first time that alleles of classical TP53 network genes have been evolutionary co-opted for the successful human colonization of the Andes.  相似文献

We conducted this study to determine the diversity patterns, community structures, and seasonality of ground beetle assemblages along an altitudinal gradient (437–1420 m) on Mt. Sobaeksan, Korea. Ground beetles were collected by pitfall traps installed along an altitudinal gradient (437, 757, 1100, and 1420 m). A total of 32 species belonging to seven subfamilies were identified from 3259 collected ground beetles. The diversity pattern of the ground beetle assemblage according to altitude was neither monotonic decreased nor hump-shaped. However, subfamily assemblages and wing form diversity patterns differed according to altitude and may be correlated with altitude or some other environmental variables. The dominant species were Synuchus cycloderus (29.4%) and Eucarabus sternbergi sobaeksanensis (15.4%) and their seasonal activities according to altitude were similar. According to non-metric multidimensional scaling, ground beetles and altitudes could be divided into two distinct groups: a low altitude group (437–757 m) and a high altitude group (1100–1420 m). Some species were particularly abundant at high altitudes, such as Aulonocarabus koreanus kwonileeique and Poecilus nitidicollis, while others were highly abundant at low altitudes, such as Pterostichus audax, Pterostichus ishikawai, and Synuchus species.  相似文献

Temperature may determine altitudinal tree distribution in different ways: affecting survival through freezing temperatures or by a negative carbon balance produced by lower photosynthetic rates. We studied gas exchange and supercooling capacity in a timberline and a treeline species (Podocarpus oleifolius and Espeletia neriifolia, respectively) in order to determine if their altitudinal limits are related to carbon balance, freezing temperature damage, or both. Leaf gas exchange, leaf temperature-net photosynthesis curves and leaf temperature at which ice formation occurred were measured at two sites along an altitudinal gradient. Mean CO2 assimilation rates for E. neriifolia were 3.4 and 1.3 μmol·m–2·s–1, at 2 400 and 3 200 m, respectively. Mean night respiration was 2.2 and 0.9 μmol·m–2·s–1 for this species at 2 400 and 3 200 m, respectively. Mean assimilation rates for P. oleifolius were 3.8 and 2.2 μmol·m–2·s–1 at 2 550 and 3 200 m, respectively. Night respiration was 0.8 μmol·m–2·s–1 for both altitudes. E. neriifolia showed similar optimum temperatures for photosynthesis at both altitudes, while a decrease was observed in P. oleifolius. E. neriifolia and P. oleifolius presented supercooling capacities of –6.5 and –3.0 °C, respectively. For E. neriifolia, freezing resistance mechanisms are sufficient to reach higher altitudes; however, other environmental factors such as cloudiness may be affecting its carbon balance. P. oleifolius does not reach higher elevations because it does not have the freezing resistance mechanisms.  相似文献

Vertebrate ectotherms may deal with changes of environmental temperatures by behavioral and/or physiological mechanisms. Reptiles inhabiting tropical highlands face extreme fluctuating daily temperatures, and extreme values and intervals of fluctuations vary with altitude. Anolis heterodermus occurs between 1800 m to 3750 m elevation in the tropical Andes, and is the Anolis species found at the highest altitude known. We evaluated which strategies populations from elevations of 2200 m, 2650 m and 3400 m use to cope with environmental temperatures. We measured body, preferred, critical maximum and minimum temperatures, and sprint speed at different body temperatures of individuals, as well as operative temperatures. Anolis heterodermus exhibits behavioral adjustments in response to changes in environmental temperatures across altitudes. Likewise, physiological traits exhibit intrapopulation variations, but they are similar among populations, tended to the “static” side of the evolution of thermal traits spectrum. The thermoregulatory behavioral strategy in this species is extremely plastic, and lizards adjust even to fluctuating environmental conditions from day to day. Unlike other Anolis species, at low thermal quality of the habitat, lizards are thermoconformers, particularly at the highest altitudes, where cloudy days can intensify this strategy even more. Our study reveals that the pattern of strategies for dealing with thermal ambient variations and their relation to extinction risks in the tropics that are caused by global warming is perhaps more complex for lizards than previously thought.  相似文献

At low altitudes, the interactions between root and shoot competition on plant growth have been extensively studied, and such interaction effects were found to be positive, negative, or neutral. However, little is known about such effects at high altitudes where the environmental conditions are harsher than those at low altitudes. We carried out a field experiment in an alpine meadow in the northeast Tibetan Plateau to test the hypothesis that a negative interaction between root and shoot competition exists for alpine plant species. Root and shoot competition were experimentally manipulated in the four grass species (Kobresia humilis, Saussurea superba, Stipa aliena and Elymus nutans). We found that K. humilis and S. aliena grew better without competition, whereas S. superba grew better with shoot competition and E. nutans grew better with root competition. The interactions between root and shoot competition were negative in K. humilis, positive in S. superba, but neutral in S. aliena and E. nutans, suggesting that the interaction effects are species-specific. This study also suggested that alpine plants may trade off both plant–plant interactions and competition shift between root and shoot to adapt to stressful environments.  相似文献

Polyextremotolerant black yeast-like fungi thrive in moderately hostile environments where they are concomitantly subjected to several types of stress, such as toxicity, scarce nutrient availability, and high or low temperature extremes. Their ability to assimilate alkylbenzenes (toxic environmental pollutants) enhances their growth in harsh conditions, including on railway ties. Samples were collected using cotton swabs, premoistened with physiological saline, from 658 oak and concrete railway ties at six train stations in Turkey at altitudes ranging between 1026 and 1427 m. The samples were inoculated on malt extract agar supplemented with chloramphenicol, and incubated at 26 °C for 4 weeks. Twenty-four samples (3.6 %), 17 from oak and 7 from concrete (5.6 % vs. 2 %; P = 0.02), tested positive for fungi. Exophiala crusticola was found to be the most common species (n = 13), followed by Exophiala phaeomuriformis (n = 7) and Exophiala heteromorpha (n = 4). These results suggest that hydrocarbons, particularly creosote-treated oak woods, support the growth of black yeasts, some of which are opportunists in humans.  相似文献

While the tracheae were liquid filled, the permeabilitycoefficient ( P) was determined, and then while thetracheae were air filled, the percent clearance for99mTc-labeleddiethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) was determined. The thicknessof airway surface liquid (ASL) was estimated by three methods.1) The initial concentration of99mTc-DTPA and the total amount of99mTc-DTPA (the sum of thatentering the outside medium, that draining from the trachea, and thatwashed out at the end of 40 min) gave the initial volume of ASL andthus its thickness. Mean values were 45.7 µm for the ferret and 41.9 µm for the rabbit. 2) Estimates ofASL thickness at the end of the 40-min period, based on the final99mTc-DTPA concentration and theamount in the washout, were 42.9 µm for ferret and 45.4 µm forrabbit. 3) The ratio of Pto percent clearance gave mean ASL thickness values of 49.2 µm forthe ferret and 40.3 µm for the rabbit. Thus three separate methodsfor determining ASL thickness give very similar results, with means inthe range 40-49 µm. Administration of methacholine or atropineto ferret tracheae did not significantly change ASL thickness.

Mitochondrial 16S rDNA and CO I gene were used as molecular markers for the analysis of the genetic diversity and differentiation of Daphnia galeata populations in nine water bodies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In the combined 16S rDNA and CO I gene sequences, 54 variable sites and 44 haplotypes were observed among 219 individuals belonging to nine D. galeata populations. Average haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity were, respectively, 0.72% and 0.56%. The F‐statistics (FST) value of the D. galeata populations was 0.149. According to the results of the neutral test, D. galeata in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River had experienced a bottleneck effect in the history. Molecular variance analysis indicated that the genetic differentiation of the D. galeata populations mainly occurred within populations (85.09%). Greater genetic differentiations of D. galeata among individuals within populations appeared in the populations from the Huaihe River basin, whereas smaller genetic differentiations occurred in the populations from the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Strong gene flows were all observed between Group I (four populations from the middle reaches of the Yangtze River) and Group ΙΙ (three populations from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River), and Group ΙΙΙ (two populations from the Huaihe River basin). The effective migration rates (M) were 851.49 from Group I to Group ΙΙ and 685.96 from Group I to Group ΙΙΙ, respectively. However, no significant relationship was observed between the genetic differentiation and geographical distance of the nine populations (r = .137, p > .05). Results suggested that the genetic differentiation of D. galeata in the water bodies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River resulted mainly from geographical isolation.  相似文献

Rice grasshopper, Oxya japonica, is one of the most important pests in south China, mainly inhabiting fields of wild rice (Oryza rufipogon) and cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). In this study, we used AFLP marker to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of rice grasshoppers collected from south China, with emphasis on testing the hypothesis that there was significant genetic differentiation among grasshopper populations associated with different hosts (i.e. wild vs. cultivated rice). Seven populations consisting of 104 individuals were sampled from Hainan Island and the mainland of south China. Eight primer combinations produced 564 reliable bands, of which 563 were polymorphic. O. japonica showed considerable genetic variation at population level, with gene diversity (HE) ranging from 0.1103 to 0.2035. Genetic diversity were studied on seven populations, and generally three populations from wild rice had higher levels of genetic diversity (HE = 0.1635) than the other four populations feeding on cultivated rice (HE = 0.1327). We observed high population differentiation, with Fst ranging from 0.4172 to 0.7652 among the seven populations. However, Mantel test detected no significant correlation between genetic distance and geographical distance (r = 0.3541; p = 0.0689). By contrast, we found significant genetic differentiation between groups collected from different hosts. These data suggested that the anthropogenic activity in cultivated rice fields (i.e. pesticides, fertilization and cultivation) could have played an important role in shaping the genetic structure of O. japonica.  相似文献

Background

Environmental gradients caused by altitudinal gradients may affect genetic variation within and among plant populations and inbreeding within populations. Populations in the upper range periphery of a species may be important source populations for range shifts to higher altitude in response to climate change. In this study we investigate patterns of population genetic variation at upper peripheral and lower more central altitudes in three common plant species of semi-dry grasslands in montane landscapes.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In Briza media, Trifolium montanum and Ranunculus bulbosus genetic diversity, inbreeding and genetic relatedness of individuals within populations and genetic differentiation among populations was characterized using AFLP markers. Populations were sampled in the Swiss Alps at 1800 (upper periphery of the study organisms) and at 1200 m a.s.l. Genetic diversity was not affected by altitude and only in B. media inbreeding was greater at higher altitudes. Genetic differentiation was slightly greater among populations at higher altitudes in B. media and individuals within populations were more related to each other compared to individuals in lower altitude populations. A similar but less strong pattern of differentiation and relatedness was observed in T. montanum, while in R. bulbosus there was no effect of altitude. Estimations of population size and isolation of populations were similar, both at higher and lower altitudes.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results suggest that altitude does not affect genetic diversity in the grassland species under study. Genetic differentiation of populations increased only slightly at higher elevation, probably due to extensive (historic) gene flow among altitudes. Potentially pre-adapted genes might therefore spread easily across altitudes. Our study indicates that populations at the upper periphery are not genetically depauperate or isolated and thus may be important source populations for migration under climate change.  相似文献

Global climate change may act as a potent agent of natural selection within species with Mediterranean mountain ecosystems being particularly vulnerable. The aim of this research was to analyze whether the phenotypic plasticity of Sesleria nitida Ten. could be indicative of its future adaptive capability to global warming. Morphological, anatomical, and physiological leaf traits of two populations of S. nitida growing at different altitudes on Mount Terminillo (Italy) were analyzed. The results showed that leaf mass per unit leaf area, leaf tissue density, and total leaf thickness were 19, 3, and 31% higher in leaves from the population growing at 1,895 m a.s.l. (B site) than in leaves from the population growing at 1,100 m a.s.l. (A site), respectively. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) and respiration rate (R D) peaked in June in both A and B leaves [9.4 ± 1.3 μmol(CO2) m?2 s?1 and 2.9 ± 0.9 μmol(CO2) m?2 s?1, respectively] when mean air temperature was 16 ± 2°C. R D/P N was higher in B than in A leaves (0.35 ± 0.07 and 0.21 ± 0.03, respectively, mean of the study period). The mean plasticity index (PI = 0.24, mean of morphological, anatomical, and physiological leaf traits) reflected S. nitida adaptability to the environmental stress conditions at different altitudes on Mount Terminillo. Moreover, the leaf key traits of the two populations can be used to monitor wild populations over a long term in response to global change.  相似文献

Variations in tree architecture and in the genetic structure of Larix kaempferi on Mt. Fuji were surveyed along altitudinal gradients using 11 nSSR loci. In total, 249 individuals from six populations along three trails at altitudes ranging from approximately 1,300 to 2,700 m were investigated. Gradual changes in tree architecture with increasing elevation, from erect trees to flag trees and krummholz mats, were observed in the high-altitude populations (>2,000 m) on all trails. These findings suggest that tree architecture is correlated with the severe environmental conditions associated with increasing elevation, such as strong winds. In contrast to obvious variations in tree architecture, the genetic diversity of populations along the trails was almost uniform (H E = 0.717–0.762) across the altitudinal range. The results of the AMOVA and STRUCTURE analyses, and the analysis for isolation by distance pattern, suggest homogeneous genetic structuring across all populations on Mt. Fuji, while the pairwise F ST showed barriers to gene flow between altitudinal populations that were demarcated as high- or low-altitude populations by Abies-Tsuga forest. Although the evergreen coniferous forests on the mountainside may hinder gene flow, this may be explained by the long-distance seed dispersal of the Japanese larch and/or a short population history resulting from eruptions or slush avalanches, although evergreen coniferous forests on the mountainside may hinder gene flow.  相似文献

A series of thio-substituted pyrimidine, benzoxazole, benzothiazole and triazole analogues were synthesized from Baylis–Hillman bromides in a clean and efficient way. The synthesized twenty new compounds were subjected to in vitro COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitory activity. Majority of compounds found to be highly selective COX-2 inhibitor. Seven compounds (16e, 16f, 16k, 16l, 16m, 16r and 16s) displayed anti-inflammatory activity at micromolar concentrations with IC50 values for COX-2 inhibition ranging from 2.93 to 5.34 μM compared to reference drug whose IC50 is 2.66 μM. All these seven compounds had very little COX-1 inhibition property and thus are suitable candidates for anti-inflammatory drugs with less gastrointestinal side effect.  相似文献

Studies of altitudinal changes in phenotype and genotype can complement studies of latitudinal patterns and provide evidence of natural selection in response to climatic factors. In Drosophila melanogaster, latitudinal variation in phenotype and genotype has been well studied, but altitudinal patterns have rarely been investigated. We studied populations from six different altitudes varying between 35 m and 2173 m in the Firtina Valley in northeastern part of Turkey to evaluate clinal trends in lifespan under experimental conditions. Lifespan in the D. melanogaster populations was examined in relation to altitude, sex, temperature (25 °C and 29 °C), and dietary yeast concentration (5 g/L and 25 g/L). As expected high temperature decrease lifespan in all populations. However, it was shown that lifespan was slightly affected by dietary stress. We found that lifespan decreases significantly under thermal stress conditions with increasing altitude. Moreover, there was a slightly negative relationship between altitude and lifespan, which was closely associated with climatic factors such as temperature and precipitation, may suggest local adaptation to climate.  相似文献

Their structures were elucidated as 21β‐benzoyloxy‐3β,16β,23,28‐tetrahydroxyolean‐12‐ene 3‐O‐β‐d ‐glucopyranoside ( 1 ), 21β‐benzoyloxy‐3β,16β,23,28‐tetrahydroxyolean‐12‐ene 3‐O‐β‐d ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 3)‐β‐d ‐glucopyranoside ( 2 ), 21β‐benzoyloxy‐3β,16β,23,28‐tetrahydroxyolean‐12‐ene 3‐O‐6‐acetyl‐[β‐d ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 3)]‐β‐d ‐glucopyranoside ( 3 ), 21β‐benzoyloxy‐3β,16β,23,28‐tetrahydroxyolean‐12‐ene 3‐O‐β‐d ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 3)‐〈‐l ‐arabinopyranoside ( 4 ), and 21β‐benzoyloxy‐3β,16β,23‐trihydroxyolean‐12‐ene‐28‐al 3‐O‐β‐d ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 3)‐α‐l ‐arabinopyranoside ( 5 ). All isolated compounds were evaluated for cytotoxic activities on four human cancer cell lines, HepG‐2, A‐549, MCF‐7, and SW‐626 using the SRB assay. Compounds 1 , 2 , 4 , and 5 showed significant cytotoxic activities against all human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 3.4 to 10.2 μm . Compound 3 containing acetyl group at glc C(6″) exhibited weak cytotoxic activity with IC50 values ranging from 47.0 to 54.4 μm .  相似文献

Geographic variability and genetic interactions in the contact zone between the fire-bellied toads, Bombina bombina and B. variegata, were studied using analysis of morphological and genetic variation in sixteen samples from the Slovak Karst and Aggtelek Karst regions. Genotype frequencies at four marker loci (Ldh-1, Mdh-1, Adk, Hem) demonstrate the existence of a hybrid zone with highly variable population structures. While some samples appear to represent panmictic hybrid populations, other samples are very heterogeneous. Pure individuals of both species occurred together with hybrids at one site. Habitat segregation among genetically differentiated demes probably causes this heterogeneity of population structures. Increased frequencies of the allele Ldh-1M, which is present in low proportion in B. bombina south of the contact zone, were found in some hybrid populations.  相似文献

Genetic diversity in the seed storage-proteins encoded at theGlu-A1,Glu-B1 andGli-B1/Glu-B3 loci was studied electrophoretically in 315 individuals belonging to nine populations ofT. dicoccoides from Jordan and three from Turkey. The inter- and intra-population distribution of seed storage-protein alleles at the considered loci and its link with geographical factors were investigated. Population differentiation in seed storage-proteins was in some cases very high with very weak correlations with geographic distance. Greater gene differentiation was found within and between populations which were geographically very close in Jordan than between those from Jordan and Turkey. However the distribution of alleles appeared to be non random. Samples collected from populations at locations over 900 m above sea level were less polymorphic than those collected at lower altitudes (500–700 m), whereas the relative genetic differentiation between populations was greater between those collected at higher altitudes. Seed storage-protein differentiation was significantly correlated with the altitude of the collecting sites. Although it is difficult to point out the selective pressure of altitude per se, altitude can reflect an integration of several environmental parameters. The possible adaptive value of seed storage-proteins is discussed.  相似文献
