1. Field experiments conducted in Lake Wawasee in 1995 and 1996 measured the response of shell growth of Dreissena polymorpha to environmental gradients.
2. Shell growth decreased with initial shell length in four mussel size classes ranging between 8 and 22 mm, and decreased with depth, with mussels in shallow water (<4 m) having growth rates nearly twice those of mussels in deeper water (4–7 m).
3. Growth occurred early in the spring–summer period (May–June) with relatively little shell added later in the summer (July–September), and varied significantly among sites within Lake Wawasee, but not between the 2 years of this study.
4. Rank order of sites was consistent for both years implying that environmental conditions responsible for variation in shell growth were stable within Lake Wawasee.
5. Cage design did not have a significant effect on mussel shell growth nor did the distance of growth cages above the bottom (0.5–0.75 m above the bottom versus directly on the bottom).
6. This study demonstrates the sensitivity of adult mussel growth to subtle variation in environmental conditions occurring within and among lakes, with potential consequences for mussel population dynamics and community structure and function.  相似文献

Brown stains sometimes appear in the inner shell layers (nacre) of freshwater mussels. An electron microprobe was used to analyze the stained nacre of the unionid Amblema plicata (Say, 1817) from selected localities on the Mississippi River in the vicinity of LaCrosse and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.Several elements such as Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, and Fe are more highly concentrated in stained than in unstained nacre. Concentrations of these elements relative to Ca were found to vary significantly among the localities from which the specimens were obtained. Ratios have significantly higher variances downstream of the confluence of the Yellow and Mississippi Rivers, downstream of a barge fleeting area, near the town of Marquette, Iowa, near the site of sewage effluent for Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and downstream of a scrap metal yard near LaCrosse, Wisconsin in contrast to control localities.Suspended silt, the result of runoff and river activity (barge traffic, dredging, pleasure boating) may be the stimulus for stain formation. Clay minerals adsorb accessory elements and in turbid water are trapped within the pallial space of A. plicata. The mussel secretes an organic-rich, periostracum-like layer over the entrapped sediment, and later reverts to prismatic and finally nacreous shell deposition. Some of the elements found in the stain could directly disturb Ca metabolism by competing with Ca for binding sites in shell aragonite.  相似文献

The invasion of the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, into North American waters has resulted in profound ecological disturbances and large monetary losses. This study examined the invasion history and patterns of genetic diversity among endemic and invading populations of zebra mussels using DNA sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene. Patterns of haplotype frequency indicate that all invasive populations of zebra mussels from North America and Europe originated from the Ponto-Caspian Sea region. The distribution of haplotypes was consistent with invasive populations arising from the Black Sea drainage, but could not exclude the possibility of an origin from the Caspian Sea drainage. Similar haplotype frequencies among North American populations of D. polymorpha suggest colonization by a single founding population. There was no evidence of invasive populations arising from tectonic lakes in Turkey, while lakes in Greece and Macedonia contained only Dreissena stankovici. Populations in Turkey might be members of a sibling species complex of D. polymorpha. Ponto-Caspian derived populations of D. polymorpha (theta = 0.0011) and Dreissena bugensis (one haplotype) exhibited low levels of genetic diversity at the COI gene, perhaps as a result of repeated population bottlenecks. In contrast, geographically isolated tectonic lake populations exhibited relatively high levels of genetic diversity (theta = 0.0032 to 0.0134). It is possible that the fluctuating environment of the Ponto-Caspian basin facilitated the colonizing habit of invasive populations of D. polymorpha and D. bugensis. Our findings were concordant with the general trend of destructive freshwater invaders in the Great Lakes arising from the Ponto-Caspian Sea basin.  相似文献

1. We examined the effect of zebra mussel colonisation on invertebrate communities inhabiting soft sediments in two bays along the Vermont shoreline of Lake Champlain, U.S.A. 2. In summer 2001, we conducted manipulative experiments (addition and removal of zebra mussel colonies) with respective controls to assess the effect of colonies on invertebrate abundance, richness, and position within sediments (within colony versus underlying colony) and compared these data to comparative studies of natural communities in summer 2002. 3. Split core samples were taken two months after the manipulation and the following year so that we could quantify individuals and species inhabiting zebra mussel colonies separately from those in sediments underlying zebra mussel colonies and adjacent sediments lacking zebra mussels. 4. Zebra mussel‐covered sediments supported more abundant and richer invertebrate communities than adjacent sediments lacking zebra mussels. 5. Abundance and richness patterns in zebra mussel‐addition and removal treatments closely paralleled those in natural communities. 6. Despite severe oxygen depletion at the interface of underlying sediments and overlying zebra mussel colonies, most infaunal invertebrates responded positively to zebra mussel colonisation either by remaining in sediments underlying zebra mussel colonies or by migrating into zebra mussel colonies.  相似文献

1. Warming trends are evident in many parts of the globe but are especially marked at higher latitudes, with complex effects on the biota that include direct effects on growth potential and indirect effects through food webs. 2. Air temperatures have been increasing over the past 50 years in southwestern Alaska, affecting the growth and population dynamics of many organisms, including a variety of aquatic species such as the freshwater mussel Anodonta beringiana. 3. We collected freshwater mussels from Iliamna Lake, in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska, and measured their shells to examine climatic effects on growth patterns. 4. Linear mixed effects models and ordinary least square linear regressions revealed strong positive correlations between local air temperatures (especially in May, October and the summer months) and inter‐annual variation in mussel growth. Slower mussel growth was also significantly correlated with later date of ice break‐up, which was linked to air temperatures in late spring.  相似文献

The carrying capacity of suspension feeding bivalvesin 11 coastal and estuarine ecosystems is examined. Bivalve carrying capacity is defined in terms of watermass residence time, primary production time andbivalve clearance time. Turnover times for the 11ecosystems are compared both two and threedimensionally. Fast systems, e.g., Sylt and NorthInlet, have turnover times of days or less, while,slow systems, e.g., Delaware Bay, have turnover timesof months and years. Some systems,Marennes-Oléron, South San Francisco Bay and NorthInlet, require a net influx of phytoplankton in orderto support their bivalve populations. Three systems,Carlingford Lough, Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay,have very long bivalve clearance times due to small orreduced bivalve filter feeder populations. Carlingford Lough stands out because it is a naturallyplanktonic system now being converted to bivalveculture with an adherently stronger benthic-pelagiccoupling. Existing models of bivalve carrying capacity arereviewed. The Herman model is utilized as anappropriate ecosystem level model to examine carryingcapacity because it includes the three major turnovertime elements of water mass residence time, primaryproduction time and bivalve filter feeder clearancetime. The graphical analysis suggests that massive andsuccessful bivalve filter feeder populations are foundin systems with relatively short residence times(<40 days) and short primary production times (<4days) in order to sustain a high bivalve biomass withits associated rapid clearance times. Outliersystems are constrained by long water mass residencetimes, extended primary production times, and longclearance times. 1. The timing of reproduction was investigated in six Scottish freshwater pearl mussel populations from 1993 to 2002. Gravid females were examined and the release of mussel larvae (glochidia) was monitored. 2. Annual spawning (oviposition) and spat (glochidial release) events occurred during June to July and June to September, respectively. 3. Between‐river differences in timing seem to be related to water temperature. Mussels in the warmest rivers tend to spawn and spat first, and vice‐versa. 4. Thermal variations also seem to influence the timing of reproduction within rivers, which can be delayed by several weeks during cold years. At least 3000°‐days occur between annual episodes of glochidial release. 5. The timing of spawning is determined gradually, probably by a thermal summation effect. 6. The release stage occurs as a sudden, synchronised event, with most of the glochidia spat over 1–2 days, indicating that it is triggered by an environmental cue. Sudden changes in water temperature and/or river level often result in spats, and the underlying mechanism may be respiratory.  相似文献

The effects of source and caging on the valve movements of the freshwater unionid mussel (Anodonta anatina) were studied in a reciprocal transplant experiment between a lake and its outflow. Caged mussels were moved and compared with those remaining in their natural environment on the lake or river bottom. At both sites, the mussels from the study site and the transplanted mussels from the opposite site were monitored simultaneously. In river the averaged weighted valve openness was higher and the number of valve movements was lower than in the lake. The mussels monitored in the lake exhibited a diurnal rhythm of valve movements which differed between the lake-bottom and the caged animals. Caging was found to increase valve openness. On the other hand, little variation appeared in valve openness between caged and bottom animals in the river, where diurnal rhythms were almost nonexistent. In the river the valve movements were more variable in respect to time than in the lake.  相似文献

Gene products of 31 protein coding loci in Aspatharia pfeifferiana examined by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis revealed genetic variation at 10 (32.26%) of the loci studied. The mean number of alleles per locus was 1±39 (±0±11), and the average heterozygosity value was 0±074 (±0±026). Not only is this the first account of electrophoretic variants of this species, but also the results show that the species has less genetic variation than most other molluscs. Genetic variation compares favourably with values obtained for other invertebrate species and for fish from the same geographical region. A. pfeifferiana has sufficient variation to adapt to environmental changes or to be used in selection programmes. The results are useful for conservation stocking and it will undoubtedly aid in improving the systematics and phylogeny of freshwater clams in general.  相似文献

1. The muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus, is a predator known to affect species composition, population size and age structure of freshwater unionid mussel communities. Muskrats leave large piles of dead shells (middens) on the edges of rivers, lakes and streams. We compared the species composition and size structure of shells collected from muskrat middens to the nearby live unionid community in the lower Licking River (Kentucky, USA). 2. Like previous studies, our results suggest that muskrats are both size‐selective and species‐specific predators; however, our results indicate that mussel shape is also an important factor. 3. We generated a shape metric (‘cubocity’) sensitive to the overall shape of the mussel. Species with relatively lower cubocity values (around 0.85) are plate‐like or spike‐like, while mussels with more cuboidal shells have higher cubocity values (near 1.0). 4. Our results suggest muskrats prefer cuboidal mussels and generally avoid spike‐shaped mussels. The endangered fanshell, Cyprogenia stegaria, was the most favoured prey; the fanshell’s relative size and shape appear to make it particularly vulnerable to muskrats. 5. We believe the predictive capabilities of this shape metric will be of benefit to those who monitor and manage threatened mussel populations.  相似文献

Ten microsatellite loci were isolated from the western pearlshell, Margaritifera falcata (Gould, 1850) and characterized in populations from Washington and Montana, USA. We also assessed eight microsatellite loci developed in M. margaritifera, two of which showed utility. Both of our test populations showed significant heterozygote deficiencies at most loci, consistent with a hermaphroditic life history. Populations differed markedly with respect to allelic richness, allele frequencies and numbers of identical multilocus genotypes. This panel of loci should prove useful in describing gene flow and genetic diversity patterns among M. falcata populations, information that should aid future conservation efforts.  相似文献

Swan mussels (Anodonta cygnea) were exposed to a toxic strain of the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria agardhii. Mussels accumulated large amounts of the peptide Oscillatoria toxin which was present in low concentrations within the cyanobacterial cells in the test aquaria (40–60 µg Oscillatoria toxin/1). The toxin concentration in the mussels increased during the experiment and after 15 days of exposure the concentration was 70 ± 2 µg/g freeze dried tissue (mean ± range of values). The highest concentration of the toxin (130 µg/g of freeze dried tissue) was found in the hepatopancreatic tissue. The toxin did not seem to be metabolized in the mussels and they were not killed by the high toxin concentrations within them. After two months in clean water still detectable amounts of toxin were present in the mussels.  相似文献

Clearance rate (CR), absorption efficiency (AE), respiration rate, excretion rate and scope for growth (SFG) were investigated in the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis upon exposure to predatory crabs, Thalamita danae, that had been either starved or maintained on diets with P. viridis or shrimp tissue. The CR and SFG were significantly lower when the mussels were exposed to starved T. danae or those fed with mussels. The differences were observed immediately after the mussels were exposed to the cues (Day 0) and 7 days later. The AE, however, was significantly different among treatments on Day 0, with the highest efficiency being obtained for mussels exposed to crabs maintained on shrimp and followed by the control without any predator cues. Results showed that P. viridis was able to discriminate between predators on different diets and adjust physiological responses according to the level of perceived risk, with growth reduced at higher risks.  相似文献

Municipal effluents are an important source of estrogens to the aquatic environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the estrogenicity of municipal effluents to the indigenous freshwater mussel, Elliptio complanata. First, estradiol-binding sites in gonad homogenates were characterized to determine the binding affinity and specificity of estrogens. Mussels were exposed to increasing concentrations of a municipal effluent for 96 h at 15 degrees C. In another experiment, mussels were placed in cages and submerged for 62 days at 1.5 km upstream and 5 km downstream of a municipal effluent plume in the St. Lawrence River. Mussels were harvested for assessment of vitellogenin-like proteins in the hemolymph and determination of total lipid, carbohydrate and protein in the gonad. The presence of specific estrogen-binding sites was found in both male and female gonads. Binding of estradiol to cytosol proteins reached saturation, yielding a dissociation constant of 0.4 nM. Vitellogenin (Vg) levels increased significantly in both the hemolymph and the gonad after exposure to the effluent. Moreover, females appeared to be more sensitive than males to producing Vg. Mussels exposed in situ to contaminated surface waters had higher levels of Vg at the downstream site, again, females had higher levels of Vg than did males. On the other hand, lipid and sugar levels in male gonads were significantly increased at the downstream site. Moreover, mussels at the downstream site had decreased shell growth length and increased total and soft tissue weights. We conclude that municipal effluents contain bio-available xenoestrogens at levels sufficient to elicit effects in freshwater mussels.  相似文献

Biological sensors are becoming more important to monitor the quality of the aquatic environment. In this paper the valve movement response of freshwater (Dreissena polymorpha) and marine (Mytilus edulis) mussels is presented as a tool in monitoring studies. Examples of various methods for data storage and data treatment are presented, elucidating easier operation and lower detection limits. Primers for six polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed for the endangered northern riffleshell Epioblasma torulosa rangiana from the Sydenham River, Ontario, Canada. These loci along with an additional nine microsatellite loci, developed from other unionoid species, available in the literature, were tested and characterized on individuals from two populations in the Allegheny River; one population in French Creek, PA, USA, and one population from the Sydenham River. Allelic diversity ranged from two to 28 alleles per locus and averaged 13.7 per locus. These primers are being used in a rangewide study on the conservation genetics of remaining extant populations of the northern riffleshell.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Customization of an inexpensive microcomputer and peripherals to produce hard copy outputs of electrophysiological data is described. The system uses any of the Apple II series computers and a common A/D+D/A card together with a digital plotter. For the 1–2 s recordings normally used in studies of insect chemoreception, this computer configuration can replace more laborious permanent hard copy production techniques. Additional analytical programs can easily use the three data files produced by the current sytem.  相似文献

Freshwater mussels (unionids) are increasingly recognized as important providers of ecosystem services, yet are among the most endangered fauna in the world. Because unionids are generally sessile and require specific fish hosts for development and dispersal, they are particularly vulnerable to habitat degradation. Surprisingly, little is known about the distribution of genetic diversity in freshwater mussels and this gap has a negative impact on taxonomy, monitoring, conservation and ecological research in these species. Here, we focus on western North American Anodonta, one of only three genera known to exist in this broad landscape and which contains three highly divergent lineages. We describe phylogeographical subdivision in the most widespread and diverse of these lineages, which includes Anodonta californiensis and Anodonta nuttalliana and occurs from Canada to Mexico. Using mitochondrial and nuclear data, we found that genetic structuring within this clade is inconsistent with morphologically based species designations, but instead follows patterns of vicariance among major hydrogeologic basins. Furthermore, there was a strong tendency for population diversity within drainage systems to increase downstream, implying greater habitat or host fish availability in this direction. Microsatellite results indicated that sampling locations were all genetically distinct, even at short distances. Many of our sample populations showed evidence of a recent demographic bottleneck, although this effect seemed to be very local and not drainage or basin‐specific. This study provides a foundation for the establishment of appropriate management units and future research on adaptive differentiation and host fish relationships.  相似文献
