Geographic variation in bird song has received much attention in evolutionary studies, yet few consider components within songs that may be subject to different constraints and follow different evolutionary trajectories. Here, we quantify patterns of geographic variation in the socially transmitted “whistle” song of Albert''s lyrebirds (Menura alberti), an oscine passerine renowned for its remarkable vocal abilities. Albert''s lyrebirds are confined to narrow stretches of suitable habitat in Australia, allowing us to map likely paths of cultural transmission using a species distribution model and least cost paths. We use quantitative methods to divide the songs into three components present in all study populations: the introductory elements, the song body, and the final element. We compare geographic separation between populations with variation in these components as well as the full song. All populations were distinguishable by song, and songs varied according to the geographic distance between populations. However, within songs, only the introductory elements and song body could be used to distinguish among populations. The song body and final element changed with distance, but the introductory elements varied independently of geographic separation. These differing geographic patterns of within‐song variation are unexpected, given that the whistle song components are always produced in the same sequence and may be perceived as a temporally discrete unit. Knowledge of such spatial patterns of within‐song variation enables further work to determine possible selective pressures and constraints acting on each song component and provides spatially explicit targets for preserving cultural diversity. As such, our study highlights the importance for science and conservation of investigating spatial patterns within seemingly discrete behavioral traits at multiple levels of organization.  相似文献

There is growing interest in latitudinal effects on animal behaviour and life history. One recent focus is on birdsong, which is hypothesized to be more elaborated or complex in the north temperate zone compared with the tropics. Current evidence is mixed and based on cross-species comparisons, or single species with restricted distributions. We circumvent these limitations using a transcontinental sample of 358 songs from house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) at 281 locations spanning more than 100° of latitude (52° N–55° S) across the Americas. We found a significant latitudinal gradient in several basic elements of song performance and complexity between north temperate and tropical populations. Furthermore, we document convergence in song patterns between populations at higher latitudes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Effects were strongest for the number of elements in a song, and the rate of element production, both increasing towards the poles, with similar but weaker effects for other song dimensions (e.g. number of unique elements, trills and trill rate). We consider possible causes related to variable habitats and morphology, concluding that the shorter breeding seasons at higher latitudes in both hemispheres may favour greater song elaboration to mediate territory competition and mate choice.  相似文献

Speciation may be influenced by geographic variation in animal signals, particularly when those signals are important in reproductive decisions. Here, we describe patterns of geographic variation in the song of rufous‐naped wrens Campylorhynchus rufinucha. This species complex is a morphologically variable taxon confined to tropical dry forest areas from Mexico to northwestern Costa Rica. Morphological and genetic analyses suggest that there are at least three partially isolated groups within the complex, including a secondary‐contact zone in coastal western Chiapas between the subspecies C. r. humilus and C. r. nigricaudatus. Based on recordings throughout their geographic range, we investigate the effects of historical isolation on song structure and analyze whether genetic differences or climatic conditions explain observed patterns of variation. Our findings, based on a culturally‐transmitted and sexually‐selected trait, support the hypothesis that three evolutionary units exist within this taxon. Our results suggest that song differences between genetic groups were influenced by historical isolation. We report a strong relationship between vocal dissimilarity and genetic distance, suggesting that differences in vocal characteristics are probably affected by the same factors that drive genetic divergence. We argue that the evolution of song in this taxon is influenced by vicariant events, followed by accumulation of changes in song structure due to several possible factors: cultural drift in song structure; genetic drift in features related to song production; or natural selection acting on features that influence songs, such as body and beak size.  相似文献

Male chimpanzees produce a species‐typical call, the pant hoot, to communicate to conspecifics over long‐distances. Calls given by males from the well‐known Gombe and Mahale populations typically consist of four different phases: an introduction, build‐up, climax, and let‐down. Recent observations suggest that chimpanzees living in the Kibale National Park, Uganda, consistently give calls that lack a build‐up and are thus qualitatively distinguishable acoustically from those made by other East African conspecifics. We analyzed additional recordings from Mahale and Kibale to re‐examine geographic variation in chimpanzee calls. Results indicate that males from both sites produce pant hoots containing all four parts of the call. Calls made by chimpanzees from the two populations, however, differ in quantitative acoustic measures. Specifically, males at Kibale initiate their calls with significantly longer elements and build‐up over briefer periods at slower rates than individuals from Mahale. Kibale males also deliver acoustically less variable calls than chimpanzees at Mahale. Although climax elements do not differ between populations in any single acoustic feature, discriminant function analysis reveals that acoustic variables can be used in combination to assign calls to the correct population at rates higher than that expected by chance. Ecological factors related to differences in habitat acoustics, the sound environment of the local biota, and body size are likely to account for these observed macrogeographic variations in chimpanzee calls. In birds with song repertoires, song‐type matching occurs when an individual responds to another individual's song by producing the same song type. Song‐type matching has been described in multiple bird species and a growing body of evidence suggests that song‐type matching may serve as a conventional signal of aggression, particularly in male birds in the temperate zone. Few studies have investigated song‐type matching in tropical birds or female birds, in spite of the fact that avian biodiversity is highest in the tropics, that female song is widespread in the tropics, and that female song is the ancestral state among songbirds. In this study of rufous‐and‐white wrens Thryophilus rufalbus, a resident neotropical songbird where both sexes sing, we presented territorial males and females with playback that simulated a territorial rival producing shared and unshared songs. In response, both males and females sang matched song types at levels statistically equal to levels expected by chance. Furthermore, males and females exhibited similar levels of aggression and similar vocal behaviours in response to playback of both shared and unshared songs. These results indicate that rufous‐and‐white wrens do not use song‐type matching in territorial conflicts as a conventional signal of aggression. We discuss alternative hypotheses for the function of song‐type sharing in tropical birds. In particular, we point out that shared songs may play an important role in intra‐pair communication, especially for birds where males and females combine their songs in vocal duets, and this may supersede the function of song‐type matching in some tropical birds.  相似文献

Phenotypic traits such as songs are important in species recognition. Variation in acoustic traits can form barriers to gene flow and promote speciation. Therefore, understanding song divergence is crucial in groups with controversial taxonomy such as Olive Sparrows (Arremonops rufivirgatus), a widespread Neotropical species of songbird with multiple allopatric populations. Taxonomic authorities disagree on the number of Olive Sparrow subspecies, placing them into either two or three main groups. These groups may represent separate species based on morphological traits, but trait divergence within the complex has not been examined. We studied geographic variation in the characteristics of the songs of Olive Sparrows at two geographical levels: among three proposed groups and among five allopatric populations. In a second analysis, we evaluated the strength of acoustic divergence within the complex by comparing acoustic distances among groups and allopatric populations of Olive Sparrows with the acoustic distance among three recognized species in the genus Arremonops. We analyzed 802 songs from 174 individuals across 81 locations and measured 12 variables to describe the fine structural characteristics of the songs of Olive Sparrows, Green-backed Sparrows (A. chloronotus), Black-striped Sparrows (A. conirostris), and Tocuyo Sparrows (A. tocuyensis). We found significant acoustic variation in the Olive Sparrow complex at both geographical levels. Our divergence analysis also revealed that vocal divergence within the complex is similar to or greater than that found between recognized species in the genus. Together, these results suggest that acoustic diversity within the Olive Sparrow complex probably originated by isolation in tandem with selective and/or non-selective factors.  相似文献

Populations within a species can show geographic variation in behavioral traits that affect mating decisions or limit dispersal. This may lead to restricted gene flow, resulting in a correlation between behavioral variation and genetic differentiation. Populations of a songbird that differ in a learned behavioral trait, their song dialects, may also differ genetically. If song dialects function as mating barriers, evolutionary processes such as genetic drift should lead to divergence in allele frequencies among dialect populations. The Puget Sound white‐crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys pugetensis) is an excellent study system with a well‐defined series of song dialects along the Pacific Northwest coast. A previous study found low genetic differentiation based on four microsatellite loci; however, available loci and analyses techniques have since dramatically improved and allow us to reassess gene flow in this species. We also add extra samples to fill in gaps and add a new level of analysis of geographic variation. Based on acoustic similarities, we group six song dialects into two geographically larger “northern” and “southern” song themes. One southern dialect is acoustically more similar to dialects in the north, which makes the genetic profile of birds singing this dialect particularly interesting. Traditional F‐statistics, analysis of molecular variance as well as Bayesian techniques confirmed the earlier result that geographic variation in song does not correlate with the neutral genetic structure of the sampled dialect populations. The song themes also did not differ genetically, and the origin of the extralimital northern‐theme dialect cannot be determined. We compare this result to findings in several other species and discuss how the timing of learning and dispersal allow vocalizations to vary independently of patterns of genetic divergence.  相似文献

In songbirds the forebrain nuclei HVC (high vocal center) and RA (robust nucleus of the archistriatum) are larger in individuals or species that produce larger song repertoires, but the extent to which the size of these nuclei reflects a need for either producing or perceiving large repertoires is unknown. We, therefore, tested the hypothesis that species differences in the size of song nuclei reflect a commitment of “brain space” to the perceptual processing of conspecific song. The two species of marsh wren (Cistothorus palustris western and eastern) provide a good test case. Western males produce larger song repertoires, and have larger HVC and RA than do eastern males. Female marsh wrens do not sing, and if they use their song nuclei to assess conspecific male song repertoires, then we predicted that measurable cellular and nuclear parameters of HVC and RA would be greater in western than eastern female wrens. For males we confirmed that the volumes of HVC and RA, and cellular parameters of HVC, are greater in western than in eastern birds. These nuclei were also considerably larger in males than in conspecific females. Western and eastern female wrens, however, did not differ in any measured parameters of HVC or RA. Females of these wren species thus do not provide any direct evidence of anatomical specializations of song nuclei for the perceptual processing of conspecific male song. 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Geographic variation in birdsong and differential responses of territorial males to local and non‐local song variants have been documented in a number of songbird species in which males learn their songs through imitation. Here, we investigated geographic song variation and responses to local and non‐local song in the grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), a species in which males develop song by improvisation rather than imitation, as a first step toward understanding how the extent and salience of geographic song variation is related to the mode of song development. To describe the geographic variation in song, we compared songs from populations in eastern Maryland and central Ohio, USA, using multiple acoustic analysis techniques. We then conducted a playback experiment in Maryland using local and non‐local (Ohio) songs to test how territorial males responded to this geographic variation. We found acoustic differences between songs from the two sites. However, males responded similarly to playback of these songs, suggesting that this geographic variation is not behaviorally salient in a territorial context. Together with previous studies, our results suggest that across species, geographic song variation and the extent to which this variation functions in communication may be correlated with the accuracy with which song models are imitated during song development.  相似文献

The frequency of extra‐pair paternity (EPP) in socially monogamous birds varies substantially between and within species, but ecological drivers of this variation remain poorly understood. Habitat configuration could influence EPP by moderating access to extra‐pair mates, because species occupying territories in a clustered ‘honeycomb’ configuration have a larger pool of potential extra‐group mates in their immediate neighbourhood than those living in linearly arranged territories (e.g. along narrow strips of riparian or fragmented habitat). We exploited variation in the spatial arrangement of territories due to anthropogenic modification of habitat of the cooperatively breeding superb fairy‐wren Malurus cyaneus to test whether habitat configuration influenced the frequency of EPP. In this species, most paternity is obtained by males outside the social group [extra‐group paternity (EGP)]. We found that the frequency of EGP among groups living in linear strips of roadside vegetation (41% of 44 offspring) was lower than it was for groups living in clustered territories within continuous habitat (59% of 70 offspring). Differences in group size and pair relatedness did not explain differences in EGP associated with territory configuration, although the frequency of EGP was negatively correlated with pair relatedness. Our finding suggests that territory configuration can influence rates of EGP and that anthropogenic habitat fragmentation has the potential to limit access to extra‐pair mates, affecting mating systems and ultimately fitness.  相似文献

We compared calling songs of the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus from 15 sites within six regions of two continental areas, Oceania and Australia. The cricket was introduced to Hawaii, where it is subject to an acoustically orienting parasitoid fly not found elsewhere in its range. In a principal components analysis (PCA) of song from all populations combined, the first five components had eigenvalues greater than one, and collectively accounted for over 80% of the total variation. Means for all song components varied significantly among sites, and different components varied at the three levels of analysis (continent, region and site). The principal way in which sites differed was along a gradient in increasing song length, pulse duration and intervals between song elements. Crickets from Oceania had a significantly greater variance in their song than Australian crickets, driven largely by the high variance in Hawaii. Geography explained a substantial amount of variation in song, despite the likelihood of serial bottlenecks having occurred as the species moved from island to island. Because female crickets appear not to focus on the short chirp as a component of mate choice, a lack of selection may allow this song component to vary more widely.  相似文献

Historically, bird song complexity was thought to evolve primarily through sexual selection on males; yet, in many species, both sexes sing and selection pressure on both sexes may be broader. Previous research suggests competition for mates and resources during short, synchronous breeding seasons leads to more elaborate male songs at high, temperate latitudes. Furthermore, we expect male–female song structure and elaboration to be more similar at lower, tropical latitudes, where longer breeding seasons and year‐round territoriality yield similar social selection pressures in both sexes. However, studies seldom take both types of selective pressures and sexes into account. We examined song in both sexes in 15 populations of nine‐fairy‐wren species (Maluridae), a Southern Hemisphere clade with female song. We compared song elaboration (in both sexes) and sexual song dimorphism to latitude and life‐history variables tied to sexual and social selection pressures and sex roles. Our results suggest that song elaboration evolved in part due to sexual competition in males: male songs were longer than female songs in populations with low male survival and less male provisioning. Also, female songs evolved independently of male songs: female songs were slower paced than male songs, although only in less synchronously breeding populations. We also found male and female songs were more similar when parental care was more equal and when male survival was high, which provides strong evidence that sex role similarity correlates with male–female song similarity. Contrary to Northern Hemisphere latitudinal patterns, male and female songs were more similar at higher, temperate latitudes. These results suggest that selection on song can be sex specific, with male song elaboration favored in contexts with stronger sexual selection. At the same time, selection pressures associated with sex role similarity appear to favor sex role similarity in song structure.  相似文献

Geographic variation in wing shape in female Drosophila serrata was examined by characterizing isofemale strains from 19 localities collected along a transect on the eastern coast of Australia. Shape variation was analyzed by Procrustes superimposition of landmark data followed by canonical variate analysis. The first extracted canonical variate showed a nonlinear association with latitude and accounted for 43% of the variance. There was a sharp increase in this variate at low latitudes as well as a gradual increase at high latitudes. These shape changes were associated with two landmarks at the edge of the wing. There was also a linear change in wing aspect. The isofemale heritability for two measures of shape was around 30%. Allometric relationships were weak both between localities and among isofemale strains within localities. The possibility that wing shape parameters are under selection independent of wing size is discussed.  相似文献

Songbirds have a specialized steroid‐sensitive network of brain nuclei, the song system, for controlling song. Most nuclei of the song system express androgen receptors, and the sensory‐motor integration nucleus High Vocal Center (HVC) alone also expresses estrogen receptors. Apart from expressing estrogen receptors in the vocal control system, songbirds are unique among birds because they have high concentrations of the estrogen‐synthesizing enzyme aromatase in the neostriatum surrounding HVC. However, the role of estrogen in controlling the development of the song structure has been scarcely investigated. In this work, we show that blocking the production of estrogen during testosterone‐induced song motor development in adult female canaries alters the song pattern compared to control females treated with testosterone only. These effects were correlated with inhibition of the expression of estrogen‐sensitive genes, such as brain‐derived nerve growth factor, in HVC. The expression of the ATP‐synthase gene, an indicator of cell activity, in HVC, and the size of HVC, were not affected by the treatment. We examined genetic variation, populationstructure, and definition of conservation unitsin Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis). Spotted Owls are mostly non-migratory,long-lived, socially monogamous birds that havedecreased population viability due to theiroccupation of highly-fragmented latesuccessional forests in western North America. To investigate potential effects of habitatfragmentation on population structure, we usedrandom amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) toexamine genetic variation hierarchicallyamong local breeding areas, subregionalgroups, regional groups, and subspeciesvia sampling of 21 breeding areas (276individuals) among the three subspecies ofSpotted Owls. Data from 11 variable bandssuggest a significant relationship betweengeographic distance among local breeding groupsand genetic distance (Mantel r = 0.53, P< 0.02) although multi-dimensional scaling ofthree significant axes did not identifysignificant grouping at any hierarchical level. Similarly, neighbor-joining clustering ofManhattan distances indicated geographicstructure at all levels and identified MexicanSpotted Owls as a distinct clade. RAPDanalyses did not clearly differentiate NorthernSpotted Owls from California Spotted Owls. Among Northern Spotted Owls, estimates ofpopulation differentiation (FST) rangedfrom 0.27 among breeding areas to 0.11 amongregions. Concordantly, within-group agreementvalues estimated via multi-response permutationprocedures of Jaccard's distances ranged from0.22 among local sites to 0.11 among regions. Pairwise comparisons of FST andgeographic distance within regions suggestedonly the Klamath region was in equilibrium withrespect to gene flow and genetic drift. Merging nuclear data with recent mitochondrialdata provides support for designation of anEvolutionary Significant Unit for MexicanSpotted Owls and two overlapping ManagementUnits for Northern and California Spotted Owls.  相似文献

The morphological variation in the annual killifish Austrolebias luteoflamulatus was studied using meristic and pigmentation characters analysed with univariate and multivariate analysis, and morphometric characters analysed with a geometric morphometry approach (thin plate spline). The results showed that morphological variation in this species was associated with a geographical pattern. In the case of meristic and pigmentation characters, the strongest distinction occured in males, while females were more similar among different drainages. Males from Rocha (eastern Uruguay) exhibited the greatest differences from the others. The number of dorsal fin rays and bars on the flanks were the characters that contributed most to this segregation. When morphometrics were considered, the three populations analysed could be distinguished well from each other in both sexes. Some of the characters that contributed to this pattern were dorsal fin origin, position of eyes and length of snout. Since pigmentation characteristics and some characters of the dorsal fin in males were involved in the differences observed, sexual selection could have played an important role in the differentiation of populations of this species. Since Austrolebias luteoflamulatus has a restricted geographical distribution, conservation of this species should include consideration of these populations individually since they might represent different evolutionary units.  相似文献

Theory proposes an adaptive relationship between male song complexity, including large song repertoires, and improved breeding success. Evidence supporting these relationships exists but is sometimes mixed or weak. Here we provide a first comprehensive study of the relationship between male song diversity and breeding success in a non‐migratory, austral population of house wrens Troglodytes aedon chilensis breeding in Mendoza, Argentina. During a two‐year field study, we measured breeding success for a population of 62 males and recorded more than 34 000 songs from a subsample of 26 males. For the latter subsample, we tested for correlations between six measures of song diversity and four canonical measures of annual breeding success. Males that sang with greater overall syllable type diversity and that had larger song repertories paired with females that bred earlier and laid more eggs over the course of the breeding season. However, these males also showed lower levels of immediate song type diversity, as measured by the Levenshtein distance between successive songs. We discuss implications for the evolution of song complexity in this exceptionally widespread species and the selective mechanisms that might influence song complexity in resident populations in the Neotropics compared to migratory populations in the northern hemisphere.  相似文献

Electrophoretic surveys have demonstrated that populations of the sea anemone Metridium senile along the northeast coast of the United States are polymorphic at four enzyme loci. Phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) has two alleles in most populations, phosphoglucomutase (PGM) has three alleles, and two leucine aminopeptidase loci have two common alleles each. Phosphoglucose isomerase displays clinal variation and an apparent association with environmental temperature. Phosphoglucomutase shows clinal variation north of Cape Cod for two of the three alleles, while the two leucine aminopeptidase loci are not clinal. All loci show a great deal of variation in populations on Cape Cod, but there is no apparent systematic pattern to this variation.
