Hypocotyl growth in Sinapis alba L: the roles of light quality and quantity   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Abstract. A comparison is made of the relative effectiveness of light quality and light quantity on the elongation growth of Sinapis alba hypocotyls. The results show that hypocotyl extension rate in plants which have not previously been exposed to light is controlled primarily by the prevailing photon fluence rate when the phytochrome photostationary state lies between ∼0.033 and ∼0.81. Below ∼0.033, changes in photostationary state also have a marked effect on extension rate. Elongation growth in light-adapted plants is controlled by both photon fluence rate and the spectral quality of the incident radiation at all photoequilibria. Photosynthesis can modify these responses but is not essential as a prior condition for a green plant to respond to changes in light quality and quantity.  相似文献

The effect of radiation of different spectral composition on axillary proliferation of lavandin (Lavandula officinalis Chaix ×Lavandula latifolia Villars cv. Grosso) was studied in combination with application of exogenous benzyladenine (BA) and putrescine (Put) and endogenous ethylene production. The effect of BA was predominant over the radiation. Continuous far-red showed a fluence rate-dependent promotion of shoot proliferation in the presence of BA. On BA-free medium, shoot number was enhanced under blue, white, and red radiation, at low photon fluence rates. BA, however, could reduce the inhibiting effect of blue and ultraviolet radiation, at high photon fluence rates. Exogenous Put stimulated axillary bud proliferation under some radiation treatments in the presence of BA. Moreover, Put, analogously to BA, could overcome the detrimental effect of ultraviolet radiation. A positive correlation between biotic ethylene production and shoot formation was evidenced under far-red at high photon fluence rate in the presence of BA, and under white, red and blue radiation at low photon fluence rate in the BA-free medium. However, when abiotic ethylene (released from the agarized medium) was stimulated by UV, no improvement of shoot formation was observed.  相似文献

Twilight is characterised by changes in both quantity (“irradiance”) and quality (“colour”) of light. Animals use the variation in irradiance to adjust their internal circadian clocks, aligning their behaviour and physiology with the solar cycle. However, it is currently unknown whether changes in colour also contribute to this entrainment process. Using environmental measurements, we show here that mammalian blue–yellow colour discrimination provides a more reliable method of tracking twilight progression than simply measuring irradiance. We next use electrophysiological recordings to demonstrate that neurons in the mouse suprachiasmatic circadian clock display the cone-dependent spectral opponency required to make use of this information. Thus, our data show that some clock neurons are highly sensitive to changes in spectral composition occurring over twilight and that this input dictates their response to changes in irradiance. Finally, using mice housed under photoperiods with simulated dawn/dusk transitions, we confirm that spectral changes occurring during twilight are required for appropriate circadian alignment under natural conditions. Together, these data reveal a new sensory mechanism for telling time of day that would be available to any mammalian species capable of chromatic vision.  相似文献

Abstract. We investigated the effects of photon fluence rate on internode elongation in fully de-etiolated plants growing under sunlight. Our goal was to find out whether perception by the stems of fluence rate changes related to canopy density may be involved in the modulation of internode growth in canopies formed by plants of similar stature (e.g. crop stands). Using Datura ferox L. and Sinapis alba L. seedlings growing under natural radiation, we found that internode elongation is promoted by localized shading. This effect was observed with internodes receiving light with a high (>0.9) or a low (0.3) red (R) to far-red (FR) photon ratio. Selective removal of the different wavebands from the light impinging on the internodes showed that part of the response to fluence rate is due to photons in the R + FR range. The blue (B) component, most likely acting through a specific photoreceptor, also inhibited elongation. However, changes in the fluence rate of B light did not have detectable effects on the response of the internodes to R:FR ratio. Fibre-optic studies and measurements with integrating-cylinder sensors in even-aged populations of seedlings showed that both the quality and quantity of radiation received by the stems are profoundly influenced by changes in canopy density. When density is very low (leaf area index = LAI ≥ 1) only the R:FR ratio is reduced, due to FR reflected from nearby leaves. In the LAI range of 1 to 2, though a large proportion of the leaf area is still receiving full sunlight, the photon fluence rate at the stem level drops dramatically. These results suggest that in even-aged populations of LAI > 1 elongation growth is promoted by the low R:FR ratio and the reduced fluence rate. Perception of these two factors at the stem level may elicit morphological adaptations in the canopy before the onset of severe competition among neighbours for the resource of light.  相似文献

Plants need to respond quickly and appropriately to various types of light signals from the environment to optimize growth and development. The immediate response to shading, reduced photon flux (low light), and changes in spectral quality involves changes in gene regulation. In the case of more persistent shade, the plant shows a dramatic change in the organization of chromatin. Both plant responses are controlled via photoreceptor signaling proteins. Recently, several studies have revealed similar features of chromatin reorganization in response to various abiotic and biotic signals, while others have unveiled intricate molecular networks of light signaling towards gene regulation. This opinion paper briefly describes the chromatin (de)compaction response from a light-signaling perspective to provide a link between chromatin and the molecular network of photoreceptors and E3 ubiquitin ligase complexes.  相似文献

Monospore germination, in Bangia atropurpurea (Roth) C. Ag. [= B. fuscopurpurea (Dillw.) Lyngb.] is light-dependent. In white light, the percent germination increases with increasing photon fluence rate until the response is saturated at 35 μmol · m?2· s?1. At a saturating photon fluence rate in an 18:6 h L:D cycle, 9 days are required for maximum germination. Green light is the most effective spectral region for monospore germination, although the process can occur in red and blue light if sufficiently high photon fluence rates are provided. Monospore germination and photosynthetic oxygen evolution are completely inhibited by DCMU at a concentration of 1 × 10?6 M. Germination is reduced in a low CO2 atmosphere and does not occur in the dark when glucose, maltose or inositol are supplied. It is concluded that photosynthesis is required for monospore germination.  相似文献

Combinations of different light quality and fluence exposure times were investigated for their effects on in vitro growth of the woody plant Spiraea nipponica. An interaction was demonstrated between different levels of benzyladenine (BA) used for in vitro propagation and the specific light regimes investigated. This relationship was affected by the length of exposure to either white or red/FR light and the time of transfer from one fluence rate to another. In all instances exposure to red/FR light resulted in more extensive growth than under white light. Thus explants cultured under 0.25 and 0.4 mg l-1 of BA exhibited high shoot proliferation rates when transferred, after 4 weeks of low photon fluence red/FR light, to higher fluence white light for a further week. The proliferation rates obtained were higher than any white light treatment including that with the highest BA level of 0.5 mg l-1. In addition, the combination of red/FR light exposure with a white light stage of higher fluence improved proliferation at lower exogenous BA levels.  相似文献

The optimal photon fluence rate for growth of tha llus tips of Gracilaria sp. was low (about 100 μE·–2·1); higher photon fluence rates inhibited growth. Both phycoerythrin (PE) and chlorophyll (chl) contents decreased with increasing photon fluence rates (up to 100 μE·–m–2s–1) in a fashion inverse to the growth response. Chl/PE ratios varied directly as the growth response over a larger photon fluence rate range. The peak chl/PE ratios were obtained at a photon fluence rate optimal for growth, suggesting that this parameter may be used to estimate in situ growth rates. A low compensation point (about 7 μE·–2s–1) was observed for low light (15 μE·–2s–1) grown plants. This compensation point was also obtained for growth in the long–term (5–6 weeks) experiments. Plants grown at 60 and 140 μE·–2s–1 showed higher light compensation and saturation points, suggesting that the variations in pigment composition found between the different treatments determine the photosynthetic responses at sub–optimal photon fluence rates. Photosynthetic rates at light saturation were the same, on a biomass basis, for plants grown at the various photon fluence rates. Thus, the photosynthetic dark reactions were not influenced by previous light regimes. It is suggested that maximal photosynthetic rates expressed on a biomass basis better reflect the potential productivity at tight saturation than if expressed on a pigment basis. Gracilaria sp. grew better under non–filtered fluorescent and greenish than under reddish and blue–enriched light of equal and sub–optimal photon, fluence rate. However, the pigment relations of the algae did not change in a direction complementary to the light composition at which they grew. This, together with the relatively higher photosynthetic rates under reddish and blueish light for plants previously grown under reddish and blueish light, suggests that adaptations to variouslight spectra are based on mechanisms different from complementary chromatic adaptation of the pigments.  相似文献

Arabidopsis thaliana seeds imbibed for a short duration show phytochrome B (PhyB)-specific photo-induction of germination. Using this system, the relationship was determined between the amount of PhyB in seeds and photon energy required for PhyB-specific germination in two transgenic Arabidopsis lines transformed with either the Arabidopsis PhyB cDNA (ABO) or the rice PhyB cDNA (RBO). Immunochemical detection of PhyB apoprotein (PHYB) showed that the expression level of PHYB in ABO seeds was at least two times higher than that in the wild-type seeds, but in RBO seeds the PHYB level was indistinguishable from that in wild-type seeds. The photon fluence required for induction and photoreversible inhibition of germination was examined using the Okazaki large spectrograph. At the wavelengths of 400–710 nm, the ABO seeds required significantly less photon fluence than wild-type seeds for induction of germination, whereas the RBO seeds required similar fluence to wild-type seeds. A critical threshold wavelength for either induction or inhibition of germination of ABO seeds shifted towards the longer wavelengths relative to wild-type seeds. By assuming that PhyA and PhyB are similar in their photochemical parameters, amounts of Pfr at each wavelength were calculated. The photon fluence required for 50% germination was equivalent to the fluence generating a Pfr/Ptot ratio of 0.21–0.43 in wild-type seeds, and of 0.035–0.056 in ABO seeds. These results indicate that PhyB-specific seed germination is not strictly a function of the Pfr/Ptot ratio, but is probably a function of the absolute Pfr concentration.  相似文献

Plants growing at high densities express shade avoidance traits as a response to the presence of neighbours. Enhanced shoot elongation is one of the best researched shade avoidance components and increases light capture in dense stands. We show here that also leaf movements, leading to a more vertical leaf orientation (hyponasty), may be crucial in the early phase of competition. The initiation of shade avoidance responses is classically attributed to the action of phytochrome photoreceptors that sense red:far-red (R:FR) ratios in light reflected by neighbours, but also other signals may be involved. It was recently shown that ethylene-insensitive, transgenic (Tetr) tobacco plants, which are insensitive to the gaseous plant hormone ethylene, have reduced shade avoidance responses to neighbours. Here, we report that this is not related to a reduced response to low R:FR ratio, but that Tetr tobacco plants are unresponsive to a reduced photon fluence rate of blue light, which normally suppresses growth inhibition in wild-type (WT) plants. In addition to these light signals, ethylene levels in the canopy atmosphere increased to concentrations that could induce shade avoidance responses in WT plants. Together, these data show that neighbour detection signals other than the R:FR ratio are more important than previously anticipated and argue for a particularly important role for ethylene in determining plant responses to neighbours.  相似文献

Abstract

Photomorphogenic responses induced by UV-B radiation in Brassica oleracea var. capitata.—Ultraviolet radiation can induce a plethora of “damaging” and “non damaging” effects in higher plants. We analyzed two possible photomorphogenic responses to UV-B radiation, the anthocyanin accumulation and the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation by modifying the UV spectral range with specific cut-off filters, under two levels of photon fluence rate. Experimental results suggest that detrimental effects are due to shorter wavelenghts of UV-B region (less than 305 nm); in contrast some adaptative responses may be induced by longer wavelenghts of UV-B region (between 305 and 320 nm). We attempted to determine the involvment of endogenous anthocyanin content in the UV-B photoprotection. Our experiments suggest a secondary role of anthocyanin accumulation in UV-B plant adaptation.  相似文献

Aim

Using flattened and unflattened photon beams, this study investigated the spectral variations of surface photon energy and energy fluence in the bone heterogeneity and beam obliquity.

Background

Surface dose enhancement is a dosimetric concern when using unflattened photon beam in radiotherapy. It is because the unflattened photon beam contains more low-energy photons which are removed by the flattening filter of the flattened photon beam.

Materials and methods

We used a water and bone heterogeneity phantom to study the distributions of energy, energy fluence and mean energy of the 6 MV flattened and unflattened photon beams (field size = 10 cm × 10 cm) produced by a Varian TrueBEAM linear accelerator. These elements were calculated at the phantom surfaces using Monte Carlo simulations. The photon energy and energy fluence calculations were repeated with the beam angle turned from 0° to 15°, 30° and 45° in the water and bone phantom.

Results

Spectral results at the phantom surfaces showed that the unflattened photon beams contained more photons concentrated mainly in the low-energy range (0–2 MeV) than the flattened beams associated with a flattening filter. With a bone layer of 1 cm under the phantom surface and within the build-up region of the 6 MV photon beam, it is found that both the flattened and unflattened beams had slightly less photons in the energy range <0.4 MeV compared to the water phantom. This shows that the presence of the bone decreased the low-energy photon backscatters to the phantom surface. When both the flattened and unflattened photon beams were rotated from 0° to 45°, the number of photon and mean photon energy increased. This indicates that both photon beams became more hardened or penetrate when the beam angle increased. In the presence of bone, the mean energies of both photon beams increased. This is due to the absorption of low-energy photons by the bone, resulting in more beam hardening.

Conclusions

This study explores the spectral relationships of surface photon energy and energy fluence with bone heterogeneity and beam obliquity for the flattened and unflattened photon beams. The photon spectral information is important in studies on the patient''s surface dose enhancement using unflattened photon beams in radiotherapy.  相似文献

The components of the circadian system that have recently been discovered in plants share some characteristics with those from cyanobacterial, fungal and animal circadian clocks. Light input signals to the clock are contributed by multiple photoreceptors: some of these have now been shown to function specifically in response to light of defined wavelength and fluence rate. New reports of clock-controlled processes and genes are highlighting the importance of time management for plant development.  相似文献

The regulation of hypocotyl extension in light-grown Chenopodium rubrum L. seedlings by light analogous to dense vegetation canopy shade has been monitored. Hypocotyl extension was controlled by both the quantity and quality of the actinic light. At the higher of the two background photon fluence rates which were used (10.0 μmol m−2s−1 in the 400–700 nm waveband), increasing the proportion of phytochrome calculated to exist as Pfr resulted in greater inhibition of growth. At the lower photon fluence rate (1.0 μmol m−2s−1 in the 400–700 nm waveband), a biphasic response was observed in which minimum inhibition was observed at intermediate photoequilibria. Although photosynthesis was not directly involved in the photomorphogenetic responses, it did play an indirect quantitative role in determining the response.  相似文献

The fluence rate dependence of the photobleaching in the cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis was studied under physiological conditions. According to the in-vivo absorption spectra measured every day during the 5 d exposition the phycobiliproteins are more sensitive to high fluence rates than chlorophyll a. The carotenoids are least sensitive, so that a relative, but not an absolute increase in the carotenoid content occurred. At very high fluence rates exceeding about 50 Wm-2 white light the organisms were photokilled after 5 d of irradiation. Measurements of the nitrate concentrations during the experiments have shown that nitrate was not the limiting factor in these experiments. Analysis of the photobleaching kinetics at 13.5 Wm-2 white light revealed that after about 8 d the contents of all the pigments studied have reached a new, constant level. After exposure of the photobleached cyanobacteria to low irradiances repigmentation occurred. Thus, photobleaching is a light adaptation process and not simply a photodamage phenomenon. Studying the wavelength dependence of photobleaching at a constant photon fluence rate of 4·10-8 mol cm-2 s-1 we found that the photobleaching of both phycobiliproteins and chlorophyll a was exclusively caused by wavelengths absorbed by the phycobiliproteins, mainly phycoerythrocaynin, and red light absorbed by short wavelength chlorophyll. Wavelengths <520 nm were ineffective.  相似文献

The rate of respiratory O2 consumption by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cell suspensions was greater after a period of photosynthesis than in the preceding dark period. This "light-enhanced dark respiration" (LEDR) was a function of both the duration of illumination and the photon fluence rate. Mass spectrometric measurements of gas exchange indicated that the rate of gross respiratory O2 consumption increased during photosynthesis, whereas gross respiratory CO2 production decreased in a photon fluence rate-dependent manner. The rate of postillumination O2 consumption provided a good measure of the O2 consumption rate in the light. LEDR was substantially decreased by the presence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea or glycolaldehyde, suggesting that LEDR was photosynthesis-dependent. The onset of photosynthesis resulted in an increase in the cellular levels of phosphoglycerate, malate, and phosphoenolpyruvate, and a decrease in whole-cell ATP and citrate levels; all of these changes were rapidly reversed upon darkening. These results are consistent with a decrease in the rate of respiratory carbon flow during photosynthesis, whereas the increase in respiratory O2 consumption during photosynthesis may be mediated by the export of photogenerated reductant from the chloroplast. We suggest that photosynthesis interacts with respiration at more than one level, simultaneously decreasing the rate of respiratory carbon flow while increasing the rate of respiratory O2 consumption.  相似文献

种子感光的机理及影响种子感光性的因素   总被引:21,自引:0,他引:21

Abstract Young, amphistomatous hybrid poplar (Populus deltoides x trichocarpa) plants were exposed daily to either background (0.025 cm3 m-3) or elevated (0.125 cm3 m-3) concentrations of O3. Levels of abaxial and adaxial leaf conductance were affected interactively by pollutant treatment, leaf age, and photon fluence rate. Consequently, conductance in O3-treated leaves was sometimes higher and sometimes lower than in comparable control leaves, depending on leaf age or level of photon fluence rate. For example, at low photon fluence rate or in the dark, conductance was greater in O3-treated than in control plants, while at high photon fluence rate that relationship was reversed. Exposure to O3 also reduced the water-use efficiency and range of leaf conductance of individual leaves, and altered the relationship between the conductances of the two leaf surfaces (the ratio of abaxial to adaxial leaf conductance was increased). Furthermore, O3 treatment resulted in diminished stomatal control of water loss; excised O3-treated leaves had higher conductances and wilted sooner than excised control leaves of identical ages. Overall, the data indicate that exposure to O3 resulted in impaired stomatal function.  相似文献

Although bats are nocturnal, many species emerge from roosts to forage during twilight, despite a presumed high risk of predation at this time. Here, we describe twilight foraging by a maternity colony of Schneider's leafnosed bat (Hipposideros speoris) in the dry zone of Sri Lanka and determine the dietary benefits of such behavior. Bats usually began foraging during dusk, sometimes before sunset, and also foraged during twilight in the morning. Mean use of available twilight by four radio‐tagged bats was 75 percent. Twilight foraging made up, on average, 47 percent of the total foraging time of these bats (range = 25–96%), although twilight consisted of only 12 percent of the available time between sunset and sunrise the next morning. Eight species of potential predators (7 birds and 1 mammal) were observed within a 1 km radius of the colony, of which 5 species are predicted to regularly capture bats. Bats took a wide diversity of prey (11 insect orders, including at least 27 families, and spiders) that ranged in wing length from 2.0 to 54.0 mm. Major orders in the diet were Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera. Prey of secondary importance included Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Isoptera, and Neuroptera. Bats captured large numbers of insects that were only available or had marked peaks in abundance during twilight. These groups included small, swarming insects (especially flies) that have peaks in flight activity at dusk and dawn, large diurnal species (especially dragonflies) that have crepuscular activity, and winged termites that emerge in swarms at dusk. Access to these insects was a clear benefit of twilight foraging.  相似文献
