A survey was conducted on the feed value for ruminants of a variety of crop residues and forages, with particular emphasis on crop residues and forages not currently grown extensively in Western Canada. Crop residues with feed values significantly higher than wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) straw were investigated, and the response to ammonia treatment was evaluated, to determine which materials could be appreciably improved in feed value by this technique. Some of the crop residues evaluated by digestibility in vitro and crude-protein content had a significantly higher feed value, without chemical processing, than the cereal straws often given to cattle in Western Canada. Ammonia treatment improved both the organic matter digestibility in vitro and crude-protein content of some residues significantly, while other materials showed only an improvement in crude protein. The organic matter digestibility in vitro of sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) crop residue and Jerusalem-artichoke (Helianthus tuberosis L.) forage and residue was initially higher than that of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) or sweet clover [Melilotus officinalus (L.) Lam] and did not increase appreciably with ammonia treatment. Faba-bean (Vicia faba L.) residue was only slightly inferior to these materials and showed a moderate improvement after treatment with ammonia. Untreated bullrush-millet [Pennisetum americanum (L.) Schum] whole-crop forage was equivalent to alfalfa and sweet clover in digestibility in vitro and responded quite well to ammonia treatment. Kochia (Kochia scoparia Shrad) forage had a relatively high digestibility in vitro and crude-protein content when harvested at the flowering stage. Mature kochia had a digestibility in vitro equivalent to barley straw and did not respond well to ammonia treatment.  相似文献

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is one of the most important forage crops worldwide. As a perennial, alfalfa is cut several times each year. Farmers face a dilemma: if cut earlier, forage nutritive value is much higher but regrowth is affected and the longevity of the stand is severely compromised. On the other hand, if alfalfa is cut later at full flower, stands persist longer and more biomass may be harvested, but the nutritive value diminishes. Alfalfa is a strict long‐day plant. We reasoned that by manipulating the response to photoperiod, we could delay flowering to improve forage quality and widen each harvesting window, facilitating management. With this aim, we functionally characterized the FLOWERING LOCUS T family of genes, represented by five members: MsFTa1, MsFTa2, MsFTb1, MsFTb2 and MsFTc. The expression of MsFTa1 correlated with photoperiodic flowering and its down‐regulation led to severe delayed flowering. Altogether, with late flowering, low expression of MsFTa1 led to changes in plant architecture resulting in increased leaf to stem biomass ratios and forage digestibility. By manipulating photoperiodic flowering, we were able to improve the quality of alfalfa forage and management, which may allow farmers to cut alfalfa of high nutritive value without compromising stand persistence.  相似文献

At concentrations of 0.01–1 mM, five synthetic multiring analogs of strigol were effective germination stimulants of intact and dehulled wild oat (Avena fatua L.) seeds. The effect was concentration-dependent and equaled or exceeded that produced by equimolar gibberellic acid (GA3). The most effective strigol analog treatments induced 55–80% germination within 7 days in intact wild oat seeds and resulted in 63–86% germination and normal seedling growth over 14 days. Intact wild oat controls germinated 14% after 14 days. The stimulation of wild oat germination by these synthetic strigol analogs demonstrates that these compounds, initially developed as germination stimulants for the seeds of the parasitic weed, witchweed (Striga asiatica L. Kuntz.), have bioregulatory activity in dormant seeds of monocots, as well as dicots. None of the compounds tested significantly affected the germination of nondormant cultivated oat seeds (Avena sativa L.). The commonly used dispersal agent, Tween 20 (0.1%), was found to inhibit germination of cultivated oats, alone and in the presence of 2% acetone.  相似文献

Lignin inhibits forage digestibility by ruminant animals, and lignin levels and the proportion of dimethylated syringyl (S) lignin monomers increase with progressive maturity in stems of forage crops. We generated transgenic alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) with reduced lignin content and altered lignin composition. Down-regulation of caffeic acid 3-O-methyltransferase (COMT) reduces lignin content, accompanied by near total loss of S lignin, whereas down-regulation of caffeoyl coenzyme A 3-O-methyltransferase (CCoAOMT) reduces lignin content without reduction in S lignin. These changes are not accompanied by altered ratios of cell wall polysaccharides. Analysis of rumen digestibility of alfalfa forage in fistulated steers revealed improved digestibility of forage from COMT down-regulated plants, but a greater improvement in digestibility following down-regulation of CCoAOMT. The results indicate that both lignin content and composition affect digestibility of alfalfa forage, and reveal a new strategy for forage quality improvement by genetic manipulation of CCoAOMT expression.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of, and interactions between, dietary grain source and marginal changes in alfalfa hay (AH) particle size (PS) on digestive processes of dairy cows. A total of eight Holstein dairy cows (175 days in milk) were allocated in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 21-day periods. The experiment was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two levels of theoretical PS of AH (fine = 15 mm or long = 30 mm) each combined with two different sources of cereal grains (barley grain alone or barley plus corn grain in a 50 : 50 ratio). Results showed that cows consuming diets supplemented with corn had greater dry matter and nutrient intakes (P < 0.01), independent of forage PS. In addition, the apparent digestibility of fiber fractions was greater for diets supplemented with corn (P = 0.01). The feeding of barley grain-based diets was associated with greater apparent digestibility of non-fiber carbohydrates, and this variable was even greater when long AH was fed (P = 0.04). Moreover, the feeding of long AH resulted in longer time spent eating (P = 0.03) and higher pH (P < 0.01), as well as a tendency for higher acetate-to-propionate ratio in the rumen fluid (P = 0.06) at 3 h post feeding. In conclusion, the results indicated that the marginal increase of PS of AH may prolong eating time and improve rumen fermentation, particularly in diets based on barley grain. Partial substitution of barley grain by corn can improve feed intake and fiber digestibility in mid-lactation dairy cows.  相似文献

In addition to enabling manipulation of plant growth and development, growth regulators have potential for increasing forage digestibility. This study focuses on the use of gibberellic acid (GA3), -naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), 6-benzylaminopurine (BA), o-benzylhydroxylamine (OBHA), and monocetyl phosphate (C16P) to alter growth, dry weight (DW) yield, and in vitro digestible dry matter (IVDDM) of forage grasses and legumes grown in a greenhouse. Screening experiments revealed that GA3, NAA, and OBHA at rates of 1.6, 160, and 0.51 g a.i. ha–1, respectively, were more effective in altering regrowth of potted alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) compared with other treatments. Subsequent experiments with increasing dosages of GA3, NAA, and OBHA on alfalfa and smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) confirmed that these regulators can be used to manipulate forage growth. Increasing concentrations of GA3 increased growth and DW yield but decreased IVDDM, whereas high concentrations of NAA decreased growth and DW yield but increased IVDDM. OBHA treatments resulted in little or negative change in IVDDM. Results generally showed that plant growth regulators can be used to manipulate forage growth, but that there is a trade-off between herbage yield and digestibility of forage tissues.  相似文献

Eight cvs of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were separately plantedwith Wild Oats (Avena fatua L., genetically pure line CS40)in a sand culture with two external K+ concentrations. Substantialdifferences were observed among barley cvs in their abilityto compete with wild oat. The variety Fergus was highly competitiveat both high and low [K+]e, whereas Steptoe was competitiveonly at high [K+]e, and Compana was only weakly competitivewith wild oat. The differences between barley cvs were relatedto their previously reported efficiencies of K+ uptake and utilization. Blissus occiduus Barber is an important pest of buffalograss, Buchlo? dactyloides (Nuttall) Engelmann, turf. No-choice studies documented the susceptibility of selected turfgrasses, crops, and weeds to B. occiduus feeding. Highly to moderately susceptible grasses included buffalograss; yellow Setaria glauca (L.) and green foxtail Setaria viridis (L.); Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pratensis L.; perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L.; brome, Bromus spp. Leyss.; zoysiagrass, Zoysia japonica Steudel; Bermuda grass, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.; sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench; tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.; and barley Hordeum vulgare (L.). Slightly to nonsusceptible grasses included fine fescue, Festuca ovina hirtula L.; rye, Secale cereale L.; crabgrass Digitaria sanguinalis (L.); bentgrass, Agrostis palustris Huds.; wheat, Tritium aestivun L.; corn, Zea mays L.; fall panicum Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx.; and St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze. The reproductive potential of B. occiduus was also investigated on these same grasses. B. occiduus produced offspring on 15 of the 18 turfgrass, crop, and weed species evaluated. No reproduction occurred on either Bermuda grass or St. Augustinegrass, and buffalograss plants were killed by B. occiduus feeding before offspring could be produced.  相似文献

A total of 1368 symptomatic plant samples showing different virus-like symptoms such as mottling, chlorosis, mosaic, yellow mosaic, vein clearing and stunting were collected from alfalfa, weed and cultivated plant species growing in vicinity of alfalfa fields in five principal regions of alfalfa production in Saudi Arabia. DAS-ELISA test indicated occurrence of 11 different viruses in these samples, 10 of which were detected for the first time in Saudi Arabia. Eighty percent of the alfalfa samples and 97.5% of the weed and cultivated plants samples were found to be infected with one or more of these viruses. Nine weed plant species were found to harbor these viruses namely, Sonchus oleraceus, Chenopodium spp., Hibiscus spp., Cichorium intybus, Convolvulus arvensis, Malva parviflora, Rubus fruticosus, Hippuris vulgaris, and Flaveria trinervia. These viruses were also detected in seven cultivated crop plants growing adjacent to the alfalfa fields including Vigna unguiculata, Solanum tuberosum, Solanum melongena, Phaseolus vulgaris, Cucurbita maxima, Capsicum annuum, and Vicia faba. The newly reported viruses together with their respective percent of detection in alfalfa, and in both weeds and cultivated crop plant species together were as follows: Bean leaf roll virus (BLRV) {12.5 and 4.5%}, Lucerne transient streak virus (LTSV) {2.9 and 3.5%}, Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) {1.4 and 4.5%}, Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) {1.2 and 4.5%}, Red clover vein mosaic virus (RCVMV) {1.2 and 4%}, White clover mosaic virus (WCIMV) {1.0 and 5%}, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) {0.8 and 3%}, Pea streak virus (PeSV) {0.4 and 4.5%} and Tobacco streak virus (TSV) {0.3 and 2.5%}. Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), the previously reported virus in alfalfa, had the highest percentage of detection in alfalfa accounting for 58.4% and 62.8% in the weeds and cultivated plants. Peanut stunt virus (PSV) was also detected for the first time in Saudi Arabia with a 66.7% of infection in 90 alfalfa samples collected from the surveyed regions during the last visit that tested negative to all the previously detected viruses.  相似文献

Habitat diversification can influence the interactions of insects with plants and this can be used in agroecosystems for the management of pest populations. Plant diversification can be achieved through planting crops, such as trap crops, or by adjusting weed management. Aster leafhopper, Macrosteles quadrilineatus Forbes (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), is a polyphagous species that uses cereals, vegetables, and weeds as host plants. The influence of weeds on M. quadrilineatus abundance was investigated experimentally in carrot [Daucus carota L. cv. Canada (Apiaceae)] field plots by adjusting the level of management of two groups of weeds (broadleaf and grass) and by comparing it to weed‐free plots. The preference of M. quadrilineatus for different cereal and weed species relative to carrots was tested in choice test assays. Habitat context influenced the abundance of M. quadrilineatus in the field experiments. The presence of border crops such as oat, rye, barley, wheat, and triticale did not significantly attract or repel this insect to carrot plots compared to the no‐border treatment. However, spelt‐bordered plots had 42% fewer M. quadrilineatus than three treatments, triticale, wheat, and barley, that had the highest insect abundance. The type of weed management affected M. quadrilineatus abundance in carrot plots, but not the frequency of herbicide application. Plots that had carrot growing with broadleaf‐weeds had about 59% fewer M. quadrilineatus compared with those growing with crabgrass or carrot alone. In the greenhouse choice tests, grasses (e.g., cereals) attracted and broadleaf‐weeds repelled M. quadrilineatus relative to carrots. In summary, carrot growers may be able to manage this pest by reducing the interaction of cereal cover crops with carrots and eliminating grassy weeds in commercial production fields.  相似文献

Esters of substituted phenoxy-phenoxy propionic acid constitute a new class of herbicides that are effective against gramineous weed and crop species. Slight changes in chemical structure alter drastically the spectrum of weeds controlled by this class of herbicides. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is resistant to diclofop-methyl (methyl 2-[4-(2′,4′-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoate) (DM) and clofop-isobutyl (iso-butyl 2-[4-(4′-phenoxy)phenoxy] propanoate) (CI), oat (Avena sativa L.) and wild oat (Avena fatua L.) are susceptible to DM but resistant to CI, and corn (Zea mays L.) is susceptible to both compounds. The antagonism of IAA-induced elongation in the coleoptile straight growth test was determined to measure biological activity of the herbicides. The basis for the differential responses by gramineous species was related to the metabolism and deioxication of the herbicides in coleoptiles. Growth of wheat coleaptiles was relatively unaffected by both compounds, oat coleoptile growth was inhibited by DM but not by CI. but corn coleoptile growth was inhibited equally by both compounds. Coleoptiles and excised shoots of the three species rapidly hydrolyzed both compounds to their respective acids (diclofop, clofop). The acids were conjugated to a water-soluble ester conjugate or they were hydroxylated in the chlorine-substituted phenyl ring and conjugated as a phenolic conjugate. Aryl hydroxylation is a detoxication mechanism in resistant plants. Plants resistant to DM or CI contained low concentrations of the parent ester and the free or bound (ester conjugate) acid and a high concentration of free or bound (phenolic conjugate) aryl hydroxylated acid in coleoptile and shoot tissues, Differential responses by the three gramineous species to DM and CI axe due apparently to differences in their detoxication mechanism. The enzyme for aryl hydroxylation in oat appears to have a higher affinity for the 4-chloro- than for the 2,4-dichloro-substituted moiety. Therefore, oat hydroxylated clofop rapidly and was tolerant to CI but the limited ability of oat to hydroxylate diclofop resulted in oat being extremely susceptible to DM.  相似文献

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a perennial flowering plant in the legume family that is widely cultivated as a forage crop for its high yield, forage quality and related agricultural and economic benefits. Alfalfa is a photoperiod sensitive long-day (LD) plant that can accomplish its vegetative and reproductive phases in a short period of time. However, rapid flowering can compromise forage biomass yield and quality. Here, we attempted to delay flowering in alfalfa using multiplex CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis of FLOWERING LOCUS Ta1 (MsFTa1), a key floral integrator and activator gene. Four guide RNAs (gRNAs) were designed and clustered in a polycistronic tRNA–gRNA system and introduced into alfalfa by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Ninety-six putative mutant lines were identified by gene sequencing and characterized for delayed flowering time and related desirable agronomic traits. Phenotype assessment of flowering time under LD conditions identified 22 independent mutant lines with delayed flowering compared to the control. Six independent Msfta1 lines containing mutations in all four copies of MsFTa1 accumulated significantly higher forage biomass yield, with increases of up to 78% in fresh weight and 76% in dry weight compared to controls. Depending on the harvesting schemes, many of these lines also had reduced lignin, acid detergent fibre (ADF) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) content and significantly higher crude protein (CP) and mineral contents compared to control plants, especially in the stems. These CRISPR/Cas9-edited Msfta1 mutants could be introduced in alfalfa breeding programmes to generate elite transgene-free alfalfa cultivars with improved forage biomass yield and quality.  相似文献

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) genotypes at varying densities were investigated for allelopathic impact using annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) as the target species in a laboratory bioassay. Three densities (15, 30, and 50 seedlings/beaker) and 40 alfalfa genotypes were evaluated by the equal compartment agar method (ECAM). Alfalfa genotypes displayed a range of allelopathic interference in ryegrass seedlings, reducing root length from 5 to 65%. The growth of ryegrass decreased in response to increasing density of alfalfa seedlings. At the lowest density, Q75 and Titan9 were the least allelopathic genotypes. An overall inhibition index was calculated to rank each alfalfa genotype. Reduction in seed germination of annual ryegrass occurred in the presence of several alfalfa genotypes including Force 10, Haymaster7 and SARDI Five. A comprehensive metabolomic analysis using Quadruple Time of Flight (Q-TOF), was conducted to compare six alfalfa genotypes. Variation in chemical compounds was found between alfalfa root extracts and exudates and also between genotypes. Further individual compound assessments and quantitative study at greater chemical concentrations are needed to clarify the allelopathic activity. Considerable genetic variation exists among alfalfa genotypes for allelopathic activity creating the opportunity for its use in weed suppression through selection.  相似文献

The suitability of 13 weed species as host plants for the potato leafhopper,Empoasca fabae (Harris) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) was compared to alfalfa,Medicago sativa L., and broad bean,Vicia faba L., in laboratory and greenhouse tests. Nymphs developed and adults reproduced on five of the weeds: smartweed (Polygonum pensylvanicum L.), pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), shepherdspurse (Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medic.), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber), and carpetweed (Mollugo verticillata L.). Adults survived and oviposited on all tested weeds, suggesting that nymph survival was the limiting factor in host suitability. Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.), crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.), and foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.) were least suitable for adult and nymph survival. Large nymphs (instar III–IV) were able to complete development on weed species that did not support small nymph (instar I–II) development to adulthood. Densities of nymphs on weeds from alfalfa fields as well as the laboratory studies suggested that the weed species are less suitable as hosts and thus weeds probably do not affect population increases of potato leafhopper within weedy alfalfa fields by serving as hosts. Weeds may however, interact with the crop to alter leafhopper colonization, dispersal, and/or reproduction. In addition, since some broadleaf weeds are suitable hosts, the leafhopper may have a secondary beneficial role for biological weed control. These interactions should be considered when evaluating pest management practices.

Alfalfa is a widely distributed forage legume whose leaves are high in protein content and whose stems are suitable for bioethanol production. However, alfalfa forage digestibility, quality and yield may vary under future climate change scenarios. This legume can establish double symbiosis with nitrogen‐fixing bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The presence of AMF can modify the evolution of biomass production and partitioning during the vegetative growth of alfalfa. We hypothesised that mycorrhizal symbiosis may change the quantity and/or quality of carbohydrates and lignin in leaves and/or stems of alfalfa, with these changes being dependent on the atmospheric CO2 concentration at which plants are grown. Results showed that mycorrhizal alfalfa plants exposed to elevated CO2 had improved leaf, stem and root biomass, enhanced amount of hemicellulose and decreased concentration of lignin in cell walls of leaves as well as increased levels of glucose and fructose in stems compared with non‐mycorrhizal alfalfa. These results indicated improved forage quality (leaves) and enhanced potential for bioethanol conversion (stems) in mycorrhizal alfalfa cultivated under elevated CO2. Moreover, the potential of stems for producing CH4 reinforced their suitability for the conversion of biomass into bioethanol.  相似文献

Alfalfa protein is poorly utilised by ruminants due to its rapid degradation in rumen. The objective of the study was to assess the influence of spraying tannic acid (TA) on chopped alfalfa hay on in vitro rumen fermentation and nitrogen (N) retention by sheep. Alfalfa hay with and without TA was fed to sheep to determine nutrient digestibility and N balance. TA was sprayed on chopped alfalfa at three concentrations to determine its effect on in vitro fermentation of dry matter (DM) and N balance in sheep. Final TA concentrations were 0, 30, 60 and 90 g TA per kg DM. The control was sprayed with the same amount of water but without TA. In vitro DM degradation and the production of gas, ammonium-N (NH4-N) and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) were measured. TA-sprayed alfalfa and the control were fed to sheep to determine nutrient digestibility and N retention. Addition of TA had no influence on the extent and rate of gas production but significantly decreased NH4-N concentration at 30 (P < 0.05), 60 and 90 (P < 0.0001) g/kg DM. Addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to TA-sprayed alfalfa increased NH4-N to a level comparable to non-TA-sprayed alfalfa. Spraying of alfalfa with TA significantly decreased (P < 0.05) isovalerate but did not affect the total and individual SCFA acid production. Tannic acid significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in vitro true degradability of DM (IVTD) after 24 h incubation at levels of 60 and 90 g TA per kg DM. Neutral-detergent fibre digestibility (dNDF) after 24 h (P < 0.01), 60 and 90 (P < 0.0001) g TA per kg DM. The effect of TA on either IVTD or dNDF was not significant (P > 0.05) after 48 h of incubation. There was a strong linear relationship between percentage increase in gas production due to PEG and protein precipitation capacity (R2 = 0.94). N digestibility was significantly reduced with all three levels of TA additions. However, the proportion of urine-N to total N output was reduced by adding 60 g (P < 0.05) and 90 g (P < 0.01) TA per kg DM. Serum metabolites and liver enzymes were not affected by TA (P > 0.05). Higher faecal N as the TA level increased indicates incomplete dissociation of tannin-protein complexes post ruminally. Factors affecting dissociation of tannin-protein complexes need further study.  相似文献

Maize field weeds or agrestals are widely used in central Mexico as potherbs (quelites) and forage. This work presents quantitative data on these uses from the village of San Bartolo del Llano, Municipio de Ixtlahuaca, Valley of Toluca, an area with a relatively intensive, semicommercial agriculture. We interviewed 24 families of the village and 10 vendors at the market of Ixtlahuaca regularly during one rainy season (1995) on type and quantity of weed use. Also, the weed vegetation was surveyed and we interviewed 49 farmers on their farming practices and on costs. All of the 74 weed species found in maize fields were useful as forage, potherb, medicinal, or ornamental. Within the village, 11 species were eaten; an average family consumed 4.5 kg of wild potherbs per month during the rainy season. In Ixtlahuaca, 2150 kg of 10 species were sold, worth 3054 pesos (US $611). For quantity and gross economic value, forage was much more important. On the average, 1 ha of maize field produced a harvest of 1.5 t of green forage, worth about 25% of the gross value of the maize harvest, and 55% of its net value. The combination of maize with forage weeds for stabled animals constitutes an interesting integrated farming system. The weeds increase the useful biomass of the field, improve nutrition of the farmers, do not reduce the yield of the main crop, as the fields are kept weed free during the critical period, and provide erosion control, shade, and green manure.  相似文献

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica,) is grown as a cereal in southern Europe and in temperate, subtropical, and tropical Asia. Its closest wild relative isS. italica ssp.viridis (green foxtail). Green foxtail is native to temperate Eurasia, but was introduced and became widely established as a weed in temperate and warmer parts of the Americas. Spontaneous and cultivatedS. italica cross to produce fertile hybrids. Derivatives of such crosses, resembling foxtail millet in some inflorescence traits but with efficient natural seed dispersal, accompany the cereal across its range of cultivation. Giant green foxtail of Europe and the American corn belt is a weed of hybrid origin. Foxtail millet was domesticated in the highlands of central China; remains of cultivated foxtail millet are known from the Yang-shao culture period dating back some 5,000 yrs. Comparative morphology suggests that foxtail millet spread to Europe and India as a cereal soon after its domestication. Three cultivated races are recognized. Moharia, from Europe and southwestern Asia, includes cultivars with 5–52 culms, each bearing several, small, more or less erect inflorescences. Cultivars in race maxima are characterized by plants with 1–8 usually unbranched culms that bear large inflorescences; they occur in Transcaucasian Russia and the Far East. Race indica is intermediate in culm number (ave. 6.6) and inflorescence size between races moharia and maxima, and is cultivated in southern Asia.  相似文献

A hypothesis is proposed whereby weedy vetch (Vicia sativa L.) seed moved with seed of the cultivated lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) as a tolerated weed during the spread of the lentil from the Fertile Crescent in the Near East to its current distribution. As a result, selection occurred in vetch weeds for a reduction in dormancy/hard-seededness, increased competitive ability and biomass, and phenological adaptation to new environments⇆redisposing the weed for domestication. The cropping of common vetch for forage in pure culture followed. Archaeological evidence of admixtures of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) in Neolithic finds of lentil, pea (Pisum sativum L.) and bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia (L.) Wild.) suggests a similar process of selection in grass pea for a weedy habit from which domestication later occurred.  相似文献
