A new species ofPicramnia (Picramniaceae) is described, illustrated, and compared to related Amazonian species. The new species,Picramnia coccinea, is known only from three localities in three adjacent municipalities near Ilhéus, Bahia, and constitutes another example of endemism in the southern Bahian flora.  相似文献

Fatty acid composition of seed lipids for 20 of the 26 genera in the Lythraceae and seed oil and protein content for nine genera are reported. The percent oil ranges from 2.7 to 34% of total weight and protein from 11.3 to 24.9%. Linoleic acid is the dominant fatty acid in seed lipids of all genera surveyed. Variations in pattern emphasize palmitic or oleic acid or both as second most abundant lipid component. There are three exceptions: in Diplusodon capric acid ranks second in abundance; in Adenaria lauric acid and oleic acid occur in approximately equal amounts as second most abundant fatty acid; in Decodon an unusual trienoic acid, previously reported only from the Compositae, is the main secondary component. Fatty acid composition of seeds in the genera is compared to that of the previously studied lythraceous genus Cuphea. Among all the genera, only Cuphea seed produces large quantities of lauric, capric, or caprylic acids, as well as a diversity of fatty acid patterns. No relationship between oil content or seed weight and habit is apparent in any genus studied, nor are differences in seed morphology reflected in composition of the seed lipids. The fatty acid patterns are judged evolutionarily conservative, with the strong exception of Cuphea, which remains unique in the Lythraceae and among all angiosperms for the diversity of patterns displayed.  相似文献

Thirty-eight moss species from four families of the order Dicranales were analysed for the fatty acid composition of their acyl lipids. In the Ditrichaceae and the Dicranaceae numerous species were found to contain acetylenic fatty acids in their triglycerides, 9,12,15-Octadecatrien-6-ynoic acid was the major component, often accounting for more than 80 mol%, whereas 9,12-octadecadien-6-ynoic acid was found in small amounts of less than 5 mol%. In some genera, all the species examined contained acetylenic fatty acids, e.g.Dicranella andDicranum, whereas in the genusCampylopus all five species tested were free of acetylenic compounds. Two genera, Ditrichum andDicranoweisia, were found to have a non-homogeous distribution of acetylenic fatty acids. The chemotaxonomic significance of the fatty acid composition in relation to morphological characters is discussed.  相似文献

Background and AimsThe three relict genera Pherosphaera, Microcachrys and Saxegothaea in Podocarpaceae produce quite distinct seed cone types in comparison with other genera and do not form a clade along with Acmopyle. The detailed seed cone morpho-anatomy of these three relict genera and affinities with other podocarps are poorly known. This study aims to understand the seed cone morpho-anatomy and affinities among these three disjunct relict genera and with other podocarps.MethodsWe comparatively analysed the seed cone morpho-anatomical traits of the three podocarps genera and used ancestral state reconstruction to understand the evolution of these traits.Key ResultsWe described the seed cone morpho-anatomical structures of the three relict genera in detail. The three genera produce aggregated multiovulate cones. Both Microcachrys and Saxegothaea have an asymmetrical free cup-like epimatium. Both species of Pherosphaera lack an epimatium. The ancestral state reconstruction implies that the presence of an epimatium is an ancestral trait in podocarps and is independently lost in Pherosphaera and Phyllocladus. The seed cones are fleshy in Microcachrys and non-fleshy in Saxegothaea and Pherosphaera. The seed cone macrofossils of both extinct and living podocarps also show the presence of an epimatium and fleshiness in podocarps.ConclusionsAltogether, the morpho-anatomy suggests that Pherosphaera, Microcachrys and Saxegothaea present affinities with each other and other podocarps, but the reconstruction of the ancestral seed cone in Podcarpaceae is quite complex due to multiple convergent evolutions of several structures. These structures (e.g. epimatium, aril and receptaculum) are of low taxonomic value but of great evolutionary and ecological significance, and are responsive adaptations to ever-changing environmental conditions.

The configuration of quinone systems, cellular fatty acids and diaminopimelic acids in 11 species of thermophilic clostridia which have been classified into new genera based on their 16S rRNA sequences was determined. It was found that menaquinone 7 was present in 10 species as the major component of menaquinone systems by analyses using HPLC with photodiode-array detector and electron impact mass spectrometry. In seven of the 11 species, the major cellular fatty acids were determined to be iso-15:0 and iso-17:0. As a results of chemotaxonomic studies it was demonstrated that the representatives of the new genera Thermoanaerobacter and Thermoanaerobacterium were heterogeneous in their chemical composition, whereas strains of the new genus Moorella and of the new unnamed genus which is composed of (Clostridium) stercorarium and (Clostridium) thermolacticum showed homogeneity in their chemotaxonomic characteristics.  相似文献

Fatty acid and alcohol components of preen oil were determined in three gull species that belong to two systematic genera: herring gull Larus argentatus, common gull Larus canus and black-headed gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus. All gulls were captured in winter, in Gdańsk, Poland. All gulls produced monoesters composed of C7–C16 saturated fatty acids and C11–C20 saturated alcohols, with n-octanoic acid and n-hexadecanol as the major fatty acid and alcohol, respectively. Preen oils of black-headed gull had higher content of trimethyl fatty acids, 2,8-dimethylundecanoic acid, 2,6-dimethylundecanoic acid and 2,6-dimethylnonanoic acid, and lower content of 2-methyl fatty acids than oils of herring gull and common gull. Preen oils produced by black-headed gull also had lower content of 2-methyl alcohols. The relative contents of n-octanoic acid and n-hexadecanol did not differ among species. The differences among species are probably not a result of different diet, as all gulls fed mainly on household refuse. Hence, preen oil analysis confirmed the taxonomic relations among these gull species, that recently were placed into two different genera.  相似文献

The community structure of pink-colored microbial mats naturally occurring in a swine wastewater ditch was studied by culture-independent biomarker and molecular methods as well as by conventional cultivation methods. The wastewater in the ditch contained acetate and propionate as the major carbon nutrients. Thin-section electron microscopy revealed that the microbial mats were dominated by rod-shaped cells containing intracytoplasmic membranes of the lamellar type. Smaller numbers of oval cells with vesicular internal membranes were also found. Spectroscopic analyses of the cell extract from the biomats showed the presence of bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the spirilloxanthin series. Ubiquinone-10 was detected as the major quinone. A clone library of the photosynthetic gene, pufM, constructed from the bulk DNA of the biomats showed that all of the clones were derived from members of the genera Rhodobacter and Rhodopseudomonas. The dominant phototrophic bacteria from the microbial mats were isolated by cultivation methods and identified as being of the genera Rhodobacter and Rhodopseudomonas by studying 16S rRNA and pufM gene sequence information. Experiments of oxygen uptake with lower fatty acids revealed that the freshly collected microbial mats and the Rhodopseudomonas isolates had a wider spectrum of carbon utilization and a higher affinity for acetate than did the Rhodobacter isolates. These results demonstrate that the microbial mats were dominated by the purple nonsulfur bacteria of the genera Rhodobacter and Rhodopseudomonas, and the bioavailability of lower fatty acids in wastewater is a key factor allowing the formation of visible microbial mats with these phototrophs.  相似文献

A comparative study of the lipid composition of 26 strains (including type strains) of marine Gammaproteobacteria belonging to the genera Shewanella, Alteromonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Marinobacterium, Microbulbifer, and Marinobacter was carried out. The bacteria exhibited genus-specific profiles of ubiquinones, phospholipids, and fatty acids, which can serve as reliable chemotaxonomic markers for tentative identification of new isolates. The studied species of the genus Shewanella were distinguished by the presence of two types of isoprenoid quinones, namely, ubiquinones Q-7 and Q-8 and menaquinones MK-7 and MMK-7; five phospholipids typical of this genus, namely, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), lyso-PE, and acyl-PG; and the fatty acids [15:0, 16:0, 16:1 (n-7), 17:1 (n-8), i-13:0, and i-15:0]. The high level of branched fatty acids (38–45%) and the presence of eicosapentaenoic acid (4%) may serve as criteria for the identification of this genus. Unlike Shewanella spp., bacteria of the other genera contained a single type of isoprenoid quinone: Q-8 (Alteromonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Marinobacterium, and Microbulbifer) or Q-9 (Marinobacter). The phospholipid compositions of these bacteria were restricted to three components: two major phospholipids (PE and PG) and a minor phospholipid, bisphosphatidic acid (Alteromonas and Pseudoalteromonas) or DPG (Marinobacterium, Microbulbifer, and Marinobacter). The bacteria exhibited genus-specific profiles of fatty acids.  相似文献

The presence of cork-warts on foliar lamina was first described at end of the 19th century, and since then these warts have been considered an additional taxonomic character for different taxa. In Celastraceae cork-warts have been reported so far only for the genus Euonymus. The objective of this study was to document the presence and morphology of cork-warts in Celastroideae-Celastraceae. The occurrence of cork-warts was investigated by paradermal and transversal views of the leaf epidermis of 15 species from five genera of the Celastroideae subfamily, using histological techniques and optical and scanning electron microscopy. The structures observed in paradermal view are characterized by suberin-incrusted areas forming layers of juxtaposed rectangular cells that originate through tangential divisions and form concentric structures. These structures were classified as either ordinary or stomatal cork-warts. Cork-warts are reported for the first time on Celastrus, Goniodiscus, Maytenus and Plenckia. Among the studied genera, only Fraunhofera lacked cork-warts.  相似文献

The distribution of seed fatty acids of 16 species of Vochysiaceae native to Brazil, corresponding to the genera Callisthene, Qualea, Salvertia and Vochysia, and amounting to 57 samples, were studied. The methyl esters of the fatty acids were analyzed by GC–EIMS. For most species, fatty acid patterns are seemingly useful for species characterization. Intraspecific variability of samples of Salvertia grandiflora seems to have geographic significance. With one exception, palmitic and oleic acids predominate in the fatty acids distribution of Qualea and Callisthene. Q. grandiflora possesses exceptional amounts of lauric acid. Relatively high amounts of either C20–C22 (saturated or monounsaturated) or stearic acids characterize Salvertia and Vochysia. UPGMA analysis of fatty acids distribution based on Euclidean distances resulted in a cluster combining Callisthene and all samples of Qualea, except Q. grandiflora. Samples of Vochysia are combined into several clusters. The dendrogram is suggestive of taxonomic relationships, allowing the distinction of taxa down to the sub-sectional level. V. pyramidalis, from section Ciliantha, subsection Ferrugineae, has closer chemical affinities with species of section Vochysiella, subsection Decorticantes. Comparing with monomers of polysaccharide seed cell walls of Vochysiaceae, fatty acid patterns revealed lower intraspecific variability and higher taxonomic resolution.  相似文献

Developing novel strategies for improving the fatty acid composition of ruminant products relies upon increasing our understanding of rumen bacterial lipid metabolism. This study investigated whether flax or echium oil supplementation of steer diets could alter the rumen fatty acids and change the microbiome. Six Hereford × Friesian steers were offered grass silage/sugar beet pulp only (GS), or GS supplemented either with flax oil (GSF) or echium oil (GSE) at 3% kg−1 silage dry matter in a 3 × 3 replicated Latin square design with 21-day periods with rumen samples taken on day 21 for the analyses of the fatty acids and microbiome. Flax oil supplementation of steer diets increased the intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids, but a substantial degree of rumen biohydrogenation was seen. Likewise, echium oil supplementation of steer diets resulted in increased intake of 18:4n-3, but this was substantially biohydrogenated within the rumen. Microbiome pyrosequences showed that 50% of the bacterial genera were core to all diets (found at least once under each dietary intervention), with 19.10%, 5.460% and 12.02% being unique to the rumen microbiota of steers fed GS, GSF and GSE respectively. Higher 16S rDNA sequence abundance of the genera Butyrivibrio, Howardella, Oribacterium, Pseudobutyrivibrio and Roseburia was seen post flax feeding. Higher 16S rDNA abundance of the genus Succinovibrio and Roseburia was seen post echium feeding. The role of these bacteria in biohydrogenation now requires further study.  相似文献

The fatty acid, sterol and hydrocarbon compositions of the fresh leaves from eleven species of mangroves, cultivated in a shadehouse, are reported. The fatty acid and sterol analyses, whilst generally typical of higher plants, showed several chemotaxonomically significant differences between the species. The epicuticular wax hydrocarbons and fatty acids were low in abundance compared to previous reports of mangrove leaf lipids, which may reflect the importance of environmental influences on this group of compounds. Cluster analysis of selected subsets of the data showed clear chemotaxonomic divisions amongst the mangroves. The results grouped the mangroves into genera, except for the Rhizophora and Ceriops tagal which were not separated, and grouped the family Rhizophoraceae distinct from all other species except Xylocarpus granatum. Avicennia marina var. resinifera was able to be distinguished from Avicennia marina by cluster analysis, supporting its assignment as a distinct variety. The results show that the lipids of mangroves are chemotaxonomically significant.  相似文献

The composition of the essential oils from the seeds of eight species and the leaves of two species of the New Zealand Apiaceae was determined. Gingidia and Scandia species provided seed oils in high yield (>6%) that contained high proportions of phenylpropanoids. Anisotome haastii provided an oil in moderate yield (1.7%), over half of which was comprised of monoterpenoids and no phenylpropanoids. The four Aciphylla species afforded seed essential oils in low yield (0.5%). Three of these contained neither terpenoids nor phenylpropanoids, but contained fatty acids instead. The oil from Aciphylla squarrosa was different as it contained an abundance of phenylpropanoids. The composition of the leaf essential oils of Scandia rosifolia and Gingidia montana differed significantly from those of the corresponding seed oils. Outstandingly, the seed essential oil of G. montana contained 62% estragole and that of Scandia geniculata contained 79% dill apiole. The results of this present work support the conclusions of Mitchell et al. (1998), about the taxonomy of these genera that were drawn from their work with ribosomal DNA sequences viz., that the Gingidia and Scandia genera were closely related to each other and that the Anisotome and Aciphylla genera were not closely related to each other, but were weakly related to the Gingidia and Scandia genera.  相似文献

The most striking feature of peafowl (Pavo) is the males'' elaborate train, which exhibits ocelli (ornamental eyespots) that are under sexual selection. Two additional genera within the Phasianidae (Polyplectron and Argusianus) exhibit ocelli, but the appearance and location of these ornamental eyespots exhibit substantial variation among these genera, raising the question of whether ocelli are homologous. Within Polyplectron, ocelli are ancestral, suggesting ocelli may have evolved even earlier, prior to the divergence among genera. However, it remains unclear whether Pavo, Polyplectron and Argusianus form a monophyletic clade in which ocelli evolved once. We estimated the phylogeny of the ocellated species using sequences from 1966 ultraconserved elements (UCEs) and three mitochondrial regions. The three ocellated genera did form a strongly supported clade, but each ocellated genus was sister to at least one genus without ocelli. Indeed, Polyplectron and Galloperdix, a genus not previously suggested to be related to any ocellated taxon, were sister genera. The close relationship between taxa with and without ocelli suggests multiple gains or losses. Independent gains, possibly reflecting a pre-existing bias for eye-like structures among females and/or the existence of a simple mutational pathway for the origin of ocelli, appears to be the most likely explanation.  相似文献

A new genus of Picramniaceae from tropical America, Nothotalisia, is described. Of the three species in the genus, N. piranii and N. cancellata, are new to science. The third, N. peruviana, was originally described as Talisia peruviana in the Sapindaceae. The genus and all three species are described, illustrated, and distinguished by means of a key.  相似文献

A halophilic, aerobic Gram-negative bacterium, designated strain CVS-6T, was isolated from a sea salt evaporation pond on the Island of Sal in the Cape Verde Archipelago. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed a clear affiliation of the organism with members of the family Idiomarinaceae. Sequence similarities between CVS-6T and the type strains of the species of the genera Pseudidiomarina and Idiomarina ranged from 93.7% to 96.9%. The major isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone 8 (Q-8). The major cellular fatty acids were 15:0 iso (21.8%), 17:0 iso (12.5%), 17:1 iso ω9c (10.7%), and 16:1 ω7c (10.6%). The DNA G+C content was 51.6 mol%. The species represented by strain CVS-6T could be distinguished from the species of the genera Pseudidiomarina and Idiomarina; however, it was not possible to distinguish both genera from each other using the phenotypic or chemotaxonomic characteristics examined. Consequently, we propose that the species classified in the genus Pseudidiomarina should be transferred to the genus Idiomarina. We also propose that, on the basis of physiological and biochemical characteristics, strain CVS-6T (=LMG 23123=CIP 108836) represents a new species which we name Idiomarina insulisalsae.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to identify and characterize the thermophilic bacteria isolated from various hot springs in Turkey by using phenotypic and genotypic methods including fatty acid methyl ester and rep-PCR profilings, and 16S rRNA sequencing. The data of fatty acid analysis showed the presence of 17 different fatty acids in 15 bacterial strains examined in this study. Six fatty acids, 15:0 iso, 15:0 anteiso, 16:0, 16:0 iso, 17:0 iso, and 17:0 anteiso, were present in all strains. The bacterial strains were classified into three phenotypic groups based on fatty acid profiles which were confirmed by genotypic methods such as 16S rRNA sequence analysis and rep-PCR genomic fingerprint profiles. After evaluating several primer sets targeting the repetitive DNA elements of REP, ERIC, BOX and (GTG)5, the (GTG)5 and BOXA1R primers were found to be the most reliable technique for identification and taxonomic characterization of thermophilic bacteria in the genera of Geobacillus, Anoxybacillus and Bacillus spp. Therefore, rep-PCR fingerprinting using the (GTG)5 and BOXA1R primers can be considered as a promising genotypic tool for the identification and characterization of thermophilic bacteria from species to strain level.  相似文献

The Abildgaardieae tribe within the family Cyperaceae comprises six or seven genera, among which Abildgaardia, Bulbostylis and Fimbristylis pose a challenge regarding their morphological delimitation. Molecular phylogenetic analyses including species of Abildgaardieae are rare, but in most of those studies, Abildgaardia and Fimbristylis appear as more closely related to each other than to the Bulbostylis genus. Duration of the style base has been one of the most widely used characters for delimiting these three genera. The style base is a persistent structure in most species of Bulbostylis and deciduous in Abildgaardia and Fimbristylis. The reasons why the style base may persist or fall off have been scarcely discussed. The assumption that abscission layers are present in the style base of all three genera and the fact that tracheids have been observed in the style base of Bulbostylis suggest that this structure might have histological complexity. In view of this, a complete ontogenetic and anatomical study of the gynoecium has been carried out for all these three genera. It turned out that the style base is histologically simple in Abildgaardia, Bulbostylis and Fimbristylis and shows similar structure and development in all three genera. The fact that the style base has a shorter duration in Abildgaardia and Fimbristylis than in Bulbostylis might be related to the lower number of sclerotised cells that make up such structures in the mature fruit of the former two genera. Abscission of the style and style base may be the result of much simpler reasons than the differentiation of an abscission layer, resulting merely from mechanical shear force effects. Differences among genera have been observed in the shape of the style base and the development of the style. The histological simplicity of the style base is consistent with the homoplastic appearance of this structure in genera that are not closely related (e.g. Rhynchospora). Because of this, while the presence of the thickened style base seems to be a synapomorphy in species of Abildgaardieae, its persistence on or detachment from the fruit might have emerged repeatedly during this clade evolution and might not be a suitable character for genera delimitation.  相似文献
