1. The influence of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment on phytoplankton photosynthesis was investigated in Lakes Bonney (east and west lobes), Hoare, Fryxell and Vanda, which lie in the ablation valleys adjacent to McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Bioassay experiments were conducted during the austral summer on phytoplankton populations just beneath the permanent ice cover in all lakes and on populations forming deep-chlorophyll maxima in the east and west lobes of Lake Bonney. 2. Phytoplankton photosynthesis in surface and mid-depth (13 m) samples from both lobes of Lake Bonney were stimulated significantly (P < 0.01) by phosphorus enrichment (2 μM) with further stimulation by simultaneous phosphorus plus NH4+ (20 μM) enrichment. Similar trends were observed in deeper waters (18 m) from the east lobe of Lake Bonney, although they were not statistically significant at P < 0.05. Photosynthesis in this lake was never enhanced by the addition of 20 μM NH4+ alone. Simultaneous addition of phosphorus plus nitrogen stimulated photosynthesis significantly (P < 0.01) in both Lake Hoare and Lake Fryxell. No nutrient response occurred in Lake Vanda, where activity in nutrient-enriched samples was below unamended controls; results from Lake Vanda are suspect owing to excessively long sample storage in the field resulting from logistic constraints. 3. Ambient dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) (NH4++ NO2?+ NO3?): soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) ratios partially support results from bioassay experiments indicating strong phosphorus deficiency in Lake Bonney and nitrogen deficiency in Lakes Hoare and Fryxell. DIN : SRP ratios also imply phosphorus deficiency in Lake Vanda, although not as strong as in Lake Bonney. Particulate carbon (PC): particulate nitrogen (PN) ratios all exceed published ratios for balanced phytoplankton growth, indicative of nitrogen deficiency. 4. Vertical nutrient profiles in concert with low advective flux, indicate that new (sensu Dugdale & Goering, 1967) phytoplankton production in these lakes is supported by upward diffusion of nutrients from deep nutrient pools. This contention was tested by computing upward DIN : SRP flux ratios across horizontal planes located immediately beneath each chlorophyll maximum and about 2 m beneath the ice (to examine flux to the phytoplankton immediately below the ice cover). These flux ratios further corroborated nutrient bioassay results and bulk DIN : SRP ratios indicating phosphorus deficiency in Lakes Bonney and Vanda and potential nitrogen deficiency in Lakes Hoare and Fryxell. 5. Neither biochemical reactions nor physical processes appear to be responsible for differences in nutrient deficiency among the study lakes. The differences may instead be related to conditions which existed before or during the evolution of the lakes.  相似文献

Light, nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton photosynthesis were studied in a Lake Tahoe sediment plume during maximum spring runoff. They were compared with conditions in clear lake waters not influenced by inlets. In the plume, nutrient concentrations increased in proportion to sediment density whereas light transmission of water was reduced with little effect on the spectral composition except for red light. Light inhibition of photosynthesis at the lake surface was less pronounced in the plume than in clear water and light limitation occurred more rapidly in deeper layers. Evidence from both lake experiments and laboratory bioassays suggests that iron had the greatest stimulatory effect on both photosynthetic activity and biomass growth at maximum sediment densities near the stream inlet. Because of less surface inhibition, photosynthetic light energy utilization efficiency was usually higher in the sediment plume which occurred in relatively shallow areas near the shore. In order to estimate overall effects of enhanced turbidity associated with nutrient loading on Lake Tahoe's primary productivity, profiles taken in shallow areas near the lakeshore were extrapolated to the maximum depth of photosynthesis. Light limitation would cause decreasing productivity, but nutrient stimulation would make this effect less pronounced. The overall effect would depend on the extent of sediment loading relative to nutrient loading.  相似文献

Algal nutrient enrichment bioassays were conducted between May 1975 and August 1978 using water samples collected from Chautauqua Lake, New York. Photosynthetic fixation rates of natural phytoplankton assemblages were enhanced by additions of phosphorus and nitrogen, although enrichment with other nutrients had no significant stimulatory effect on algal photosynthesis. Whereas phosphorus stimulated in spring and early summer, both nitrogen and phosphorus enhanced photosynthesis in midsummer and fall. Relative to the effect of phosphorus enrichment, enhancement of photosynthesis by nitrogen during the summer and fall was highest in the northern part of the lake. During the period of ice cover, photosynthesis did not appear to be limited by nutrients in that nutrient additions (P, N, Si, C, Fe, trace metals) did not enhance fixation rates. Observed temporal fluctuations in the response of the algae to P and N correlated with changes in the lake water N:P ratio as well as with temporal changes in dissolved orthophosphate and nitrate-nitrite nitrogen. The N:P ratio decreased drastically in the summer and remained at ca. 10 or less through mid-fall, suggesting that N concentrations were inadequate for the non-N-fixing phytoplankton. Studies over 3 yr indicate that states of P and N limitation undergo time-space fluctuations that occur in a cyclic pattern in the surface waters of Chautauqua Lake.  相似文献

Ancient Lake Ohrid: biodiversity and evolution   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Worldwide ancient lakes have been a major focal point of geological, biological, and ecological research, and key concepts in, for example, evolutionary biology are partly based on ancient lake studies. Ancient lakes can be found on most continents and climate zones with most actual or putative ancient lakes in Europe being restricted to the Balkan Region. The arguably most outstanding of them is the oligotrophic and karstic Lake Ohrid, a steep-sided graben of rift formation origin situated in the central Balkans. Here, an attempt is made to summarize current knowledge of the geological, limnological, and faunal history of Lake Ohrid. Additionally, existing data on biodiversity and endemism in Lake Ohrid are updated and evaluated, and patterns and processes of speciation are reviewed in the context of the Ohrid watershed, including its sister lake, Lake Prespa. Whereas the geological history of the Ohrid Graben is relatively well studied, there is little knowledge about the limnological and biotic history of the actual lake (e.g., the age of the extant lake or from where the lake first received its water, along with its first biota). Most workers agree on a time frame of origin for Lake Ohrid of 2–5 million years ago (Mya). However, until now, the exact limnological origin and the origin of faunal or floral elements of Lake Ohrid remain uncertain. Two largely contrasting opinions either favour the theory of de novo formation of Lake Ohrid in a dry polje with a spring or river hydrography or a palaeogeographical connection of Lake Ohrid to brackish waters on the Balkan Peninsula. Whereas neither theory can be rejected at this point, the data summarized in the current review support the de novo hypothesis. An assessment of the fauna and flora of Lake Ohrid confirms that the lake harbours an incredible endemic biodiversity. Despite the fact that some biotic groups are poorly studied or not studied at all, approximately 1,200 native species are known from the lake, including 586 animals, and at least 212 species are endemic, including 182 animals. The adjusted rate of endemicity is estimated at 36% for all taxa and 34% for Animalia. In terms of endemic biodiversity, Lake Ohrid is with these 212 known endemic species and a surface area of 358 km2 probably the most diverse lake in the world, taking surface area into account. Preliminary phylogeographical analyses of endemic Lake Ohrid taxa indicate that the vast majority of respective sister taxa occurs in the Balkans and that therefore the most recent common ancestors of Ohrid- and non-Ohrid species likely resided in the region when Lake Ohrid came into existence. These data also indicate that there is relatively little faunal exchange and overlap between Lake Ohrid and its sister lake, Lake Prespa, despite the fact that the latter lake is a major water supplier for Lake Ohrid. Studies on selected species flocks and scatters, mostly in molluscs, point towards the assumption that only few lineages originally colonized Lake Ohrid from the Balkans and that the majority of endemic species seen today probably started to evolve within the lake during the early Pleistocene. Within the Ohrid watershed, endemism occurs at different spatial and taxonomic scales, ranging from species endemic to certain parts of Lake Ohrid to species endemic to the whole watershed and from subspecies to genus level and possibly beyond. Modes of speciation in the Ohrid watershed are largely affected by its degree of isolation. Observational evidence points towards both allopatric (peripatric) and parapatric speciation. Though sympatric speciation within a habitat is conceivable, so far there are no known examples. Today, the lake suffers from increasing anthropogenic pressure and a “creeping biodiversity crisis”. Some endemic species presumably have already gone extinct, and there are also indications of invasive species penetrating Lake Ohrid. The comparatively small size of Lake Ohrid and the extremely small range of many endemic species, together with increasing human pressure make its fauna particularly vulnerable. It is thus hoped that this review will encourage future research on the ecology and evolutionary biology of the lake’s taxa, the knowledge of which would ultimately help protecting this unique European biodiversity hot spot. The impact of iron and chelators on Lake Kinneret phytoplankton   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The response of natural phytoplankton populations from LakeKinneret to the addition of iron (Fe) and chelator (EDTA) wastested by following growth patterns and determining the algalcomposition initially and at the end of the experiments; algalgrowth rates and yield were measured by in vivo chlorophyllfluorescence. Although the pattern of growth response varied, usually some stimulation of phytoplankton growth rate and yieldwas observed with chelator and/or Fe addition in comparisonto unsupplemented samples. However, the major impact of Fe andEDTA on the phytoplankton appeared to be expressed as changesin the algal population composition. There were clear taxonomicdifferences in the response to Fe addition, which in nearlyall experiments stimulated outgrowth of Bacillanophyta and Chlorophyta, compared with the effect of EDTA alone or with Fe which enhancedthe development of Cyanophyta, in addition to Bacillariophyta. The availability of Fe and/or chelators therefore appears tobe important in determining the composition of the phytoplanktonpopulations in Lake Kinneret and presumably in other aquaticenvironments.  相似文献

Inorganic carbon limitation of photosynthesis in lake phytoplankton   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
1. Inorganic carbon availability influences species composition of phytoplankton in acidic and highly alkaline lakes, whereas the overall influence on community photosynthesis and growth is subject to debate.
2. The influence of total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and free CO2 on community photosynthesis was studied in six Danish lakes during the summer of 1995. The lakes were selected to ensure a wide range of chlorophyll a concentrations (1–120 μg l–1), pH (5.6–9.6) and DIC concentration (0.02–2.5 m m ). Photosynthesis experiments were performed using the 14C technique in CO2-manipulated water samples, either by changing the pH or by adding/removing CO2.
3. Lake waters were naturally CO2 supersaturated during most of the experimental period and inorganic carbon limitation of photosynthetic rates did not occur under ambient conditions. However, photosynthesis by phytoplankton in lakes with low and intermediate DIC concentrations was seriously restricted when CO2 concentrations declined. Similarly, photosynthesis was limited by low CO2 concentrations during phytoplankton blooms in the hardwater alkaline lakes.  相似文献

1. In order to evaluate limitation of different phytoplankton groups by inorganic nutrients, multiple nutrient enrichment bioassays using the addition of iron (Fe) and the combined addition of nitrogen and phosphorus (NP) were carried out in the north and the south of Lake Tanganyika during the rainy and dry seasons in 2003 and 2004. 2. Nutrient additions resulted in an increase in phytoplankton growth rate relative to control treatments in all experiments. HPLC pigment data and epifluorescence microscopy counts indicated differential stimulation of the dominant phytoplankton groups. Iron additions mainly stimulated prokaryotic picophytoplankton, while enrichments with nitrogen and phosphorus stimulated green algae and in some cases diatoms. Extended incubation (3 days) indicated co‐limitation of Fe and NP, in particular for picocyanobacteria.  相似文献

Spatial distribution of phytoplankton in Lake Baikal, Spring 1991   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
  • 1 Studies carried out in Lake Baikal in late spring (late May-early June) 1991 showed marked differences in the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton in different regions of the lake. The south and north basins were characterized by small forms of algae. The middle basin, Maloe More and the shallow waters of the Selenga had species with large cells including Aulacoseira islandica subsp. helvetica, Dinobryon cylindricum and D. divergens.
  • 2 Areas of high biomass were correlated with shallow waters and river inputs. This was especially apparent in the region of the Selenga delta. The vertical distribution of phytoplankton indicated the non-synchronous start of the spring homothermy throughout the lake. Phytoplankton were concentrated in the upper 100 m layer with subsurface maxima resulting from the sinking of large algae.
  • 3 The concentration of phytoplankton biomass in general at this time characterized the lake as moderately productive.

1. To investigate the influence of elevated temperatures and nutrients on photosynthesis, respiration and growth of natural phytoplankton assemblages, water was collected from a eutrophic lake in spring, summer, autumn, winter and the following spring and exposed to ambient temperature and ambient +2, +4 and +6 °C for 2 weeks with and without addition of extra inorganic nutrients. 2. Rates of photosynthesis, respiration and growth generally increased with temperature, but this effect was strongly enhanced by high nutrient availability, and therefore was most evident for nutrient amended cultures in seasons of low ambient nutrient availability. 3. Temperature stimulation of growth and metabolism was higher at low than high ambient temperature showing that long‐term temperature acclimation of the phytoplankton community before the experiments was of great importance for the measured rates. 4. Although we found distinct responses to relatively small temperature increases, the interaction between nutrient availability, time of the year and, thus, ambient temperature was responsible for most of the observed variability in phytoplankton growth, photosynthesis and respiration. 5. Although an increase in global temperature will influence production and degradation of organic material in lakes, the documented importance of ambient temperatures and nutrient conditions suggests that effects will be most pronounced during winter and early spring, while the remaining part of the growth season will be practically unaffected by increasing temperatures.  相似文献

In acidifying lakes, pH decreases abruptly in response to acid precipitation events. We tested the hypothesis that, in comparison to a circumneutral lake, phytoplankton photosynthesis in an acidifying lake is less sensitive to a rapid decrease in pH (acid pH shock). Phytoplankton in Plastic Lake, which is undergoing acidification, was characterized by a predominance of Pyrrophyta, and phytoplankton photosynthesis decreased to a lesser extent in response to an acid pH shock than the photosynthesis of populations from St. Nora Lake, a circumneutral lake located nearby, in which Pyrrophyta were not abundant. Rates of phytoplankton photosynthesis in acid pH shock experiments were significantly correlated with hydrogen ion but not with dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations. Depression of photosynthesis following an acid pH shock occurred in axenic cultures of Chlorella pyrenoidosa Chick but was not observed in axenic cultures of the acidophilic alga Chlorella saccharophila (Krug.) Nadson or in three species isolated from Plastic Lake. However, the three isolates were not acidophilic during growth. We conclude that phytoplankton in acidifying lakes consists predominantly of species which are tolerant to acid pH for short periods (hours) but cannot grow at these pHs.  相似文献

Lake Baikal, Russian Siberia, was sampled in July 1990 during the period of spring mixing and initiation of thermal stratification. Vertical profiles of temperature, dissolved nutrients (nitrate and soluble reactive phosphorus), phytoplankton biomass, and primary productivity were determined in an eleven-station transect encompassing the entire 636 km length of the lake. Pronounced horizontal variability in hydrodynamic conditions was observed, with the southern region of the lake being strongly thermally stratified while the middle and north basins were largely isothermal through July. The extent of depletion of surface water nutrients, and the magnitude of phytoplankton biomass and productivity, were found to be strongly correlated with the degree of thermal stratification. Horizontal differences likely reflected the contribution of two important factors: variation in the timing of ice-out in different parts of the lake (driving large-scale patterns of thermal stratification and other limnological properties) and localized effects of river inflows that may contribute to the preliminary stabilization of the water column in the face of intense turbulent spring mixing (driving meso-scale patterns). Examination of the relationships between surface water inorganic N and P depletion suggested that during the spring and early summer, phytoplankton growth in unstratified portions of the lake was largely unconstrained by nutrient supplies. As summer progressed, the importance of co-limitation by both N and P became more apparent. Uptake and regeneration rates, measured directly using the stable isotope 15N, revealed that phytoplankton in stratified portions of the lake relied primarily on NH4 as their N source. Rates of NH4 regeneration were in approximate equilibrium with uptake; both processes were dominated by organisms <2 µm. This pattern is similar to that observed for oligotrophic marine systems. Our study underscores the importance of hydrodynamic conditions in influencing patterns of biological productivity and nutrient dynamics that occur in Lake Baikal during its brief growing season.  相似文献

Phytoplankton populations in perennially ice-covered Lake Bonney, Antarctica grow in a unique non-turbulent environment. The absence of turbulence generated by winds or major streams, combined with strong vertical gradients in temperature and nutrients, create vertically stratified environmental conditions that support three discrete phytoplankton populations in the east lobe of this lake. Phytoplankton biomass and photosynthesis were measured in the east lobe of Lake Bonney during the winter-spring transicion (September) to mid-summer (January). During this period, irradiance beneath the ice increased from 0.03 to 1.9 mol quanta m−2 d−1. Chlorophylla concentrations ranged from 0.03 to 3.8 μl−1 within the trophogenic zone (just beneath the permanent ice cover to 20 m) and photosynthesis ranged from below detection to 3.2 μg Cl−1 d−1. Our results indicate: (1) phytoplankton photosynthesis began in late winter (before 9 September, our earliest sampling date); (2) maxima for phytoplankton biomass and production developed sequentially in time from the top to the bottom of the trophogenic zone, following the seasoral increase in irradiance; and (3) the highest photosynthetic efficiencies occurred in early spring, then decreased over the remainder of the phytoplankton growth season. The spring decrease in photosynthetic rates for shallower phytoplankton appeared to be related to nutrient availability, while photosynthesis in the deeper populations was solely lightdependent.  相似文献

Submerged macrophytes are useful indicators of nutrient pollution in the littoral of lakes. We analyzed submerged macrophytes at 30 sites in Lake Ohrid (20 in the Macedonian and 10 in the Albanian part). In total, we found 29 macrophyte species, which belong to 9 families. In order to describe and compare nutrient pollution in different parts of Lake Ohrid, and to introduce monitoring methods which are consistent with the demands of the Water Framework Directive we calculated the macrophyte index for each site. The results show that nutrient pollution generally is low in the majority of the investigated sites. There are, however, marked differences among sites, with some sites at the southern part of the lake being more polluted. There also is a marked difference in nutrient pollution between shallow and deeper water. The values of the macrophyte index in deeper waters (> 4 m) indicate that the nutrient pollution is very low, while in shallow waters (< 2 m) it is moderate or moderate-immense.  相似文献

Nutrient addition experiments conducted during the ice-free seasons of 1983 and 1984 in Gem Lake, an alpine lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, indicate that algal biomass is limited by phosphorus, in combination with iron or copper. Phosphorus additions were always required to stimulate growth, but did not do so when phosphorus was the only nutrient added. Simultaneous additions of phosphorus and iron resulted in increased levels of chlorophyll, particulate carbon, particulate nitrogen and particulate phosphorus. Simultaneous additions of phosphorus and copper resulted in increases in chlorophyll, particulate nitrogen and particulate phosphorus, not in particulate carbon. Neither iron nor copper by itself stimulated growth.Particulate N : P ratios from all seasons in Gem Lake suggest that simultaneous micronutrient and phosphorus limitation exists throughout the summer, when nutrient and biomass levels remain low; limitation by phosphorus alone may appear in the fall and spring, when biomass and major ion concentrations increase dramatically.  相似文献

As a result of a low pH, the inorganic carbon of acidic lakes is present as CO2 at air-equilibrium concentration and is substantially lower than the inorganic carbon concentration in higher-pH waters with bicarbonate. This situation is quite common in artificially acidified lakes and where inorganic carbon is considered the limiting factor in phytoplankton growth. Apart from low inorganic carbon content, Lake Caviahue in Argentina has low nitrogen and high phosphorus content. The aim of this work was to assess the importance of inorganic carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen, relating data on lake nutrients to phytoplankton species requirements. Lake samples taken in the 2004–2006 period did not show any particular trend in the vertical distribution of the water column of ammonium, inorganic carbon, and phosphorus with reference to either seasonality or depth. A decrease of some 15% in the lake’s phosphorus concentration was observed over the same period. Although the total phytoplankton biomass in Lake Caviahue was similar throughout the period, a seasonal variation was observed. Lab bioassays were carried out with solutions of bicarbonates, ammonium, nitrates, and phosphate. We worked with three species separately, namely, two chlorophytes, Keratococcus rhaphidioides and Watanabea sp.; and one euglenophyte, Euglena mutabilis. Answers to specific nutrient requirements differed for each algal species: both chlorophytes prefer ammonium or nitrates added on their own, whereas the euglenophyte registered a higher growth rate with the joint addition of ammonium and phosphorus. Even when the limiting nutrient(s) for phytoplankton yield and rate varied between species, we observed a tendency for nitrogen limitation in Lake Caviahue.  相似文献

Some aspects of iron cycling in maritime antarctic lakes   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Iron occurs in extremely high concentrations in certain maritime Antarctic freshwater lakes which seasonally develop an anoxic zone. In oligotrophic Sombre Lake the data show that Fe(II) precipitates as Fe(III) oxyhydroxides which bind phosphorus and return it to the sediments. In nutrient-enriched Amos lake, significant quantities of sulphide are also produced and this binds a proportion of the released Fe(II) so reducing the ratio of total iron to phosphorus at the redox boundary where the oxyhydroxides are formed. A proportion of the sediment-released phosphorus therefore reaches the upper waters of this lake (unlike in Sombre Lake) and provides the initial nutrient source for under-ice phytoplankton development in spring. Iron-reducing bacteria have been isolated, from Sombre Lake sediments, which apparently utilise the abundant Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. From thermodynamic considerations (assuming Fe(III) is not limiting) these should outcompete sulphate reducers and methanogens (both previously reported from Sombre and Amos Lakes) and could therefore constitute an important component of the anaerobic mineralisation of organic carbon in such lakes.  相似文献

Lake St. Clair phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance and composition was analyzed during the period of May to September 1984. In addition, size-fractionated primary productivity and other limnological parameters were measured. Highest phytoplankton biomass was observed during spring (May) with high values for the southern and southeastern regions of the lake. Seasonally, the mean phytoplankton biomass ranged between 0.17 and 1.18 g m-3 with high values recorded during spring (May, June) compared to summer. In the spring the phytoplankton was dominated by Diatomeae followed by Chrysophyceae and Cryptophyceae. During the summer the diatoms showed a decreasing trend due to the relative prevalence of Chrysophyceae, Cryptophyceae, and Chlorophyta. The species composition was oligotrophic-mesotrophic with mixed occurrence of some eutrophic species. The phytoplankton size composition indicated dominance of microplankton/netplankton (> 20 µm) and ultraplankton (< 20 µm) during spring and summer respectively. On an overall basis ultraplankton contributed overwhelmingly to primary productivity, as much as 75 percent in the summer. The mean zooplankton biomass ranged from 173.0 to 1306.0 mg l- dominated by Cladocerans (bosminids) in contrast to the other Great Lakes. Statistical evaluation of the phytoplankton — nutrient-contaminant interactions revealed positive correlations with heavy metals, suggestive of a physiological adaptation to contamination from the chemical valley. Based on low biomass, high Production/Biomass ratio, dominance of ultraplankton, characteristic species composition and plankton spectra, the lake appears to be an oligotrophic-mesotrophic perturbed ecosystem.  相似文献

In meromictic Mahoney Lake, British Columbia, Canada, the heterotrophic bacterial production in the mixolimnion exceeded concomitant primary production by a factor of 7. Bacterial growth rates were correlated neither to primary production nor to the amount of chlorophyll a. Both results indicate an uncoupling of bacteria and phytoplankton. In the chemocline of the lake, an extremely dense population of the purple sulfur bacterium Amoebobacter purpureus is present year round. We investigated whether anoxygenic phototrophs are significant for the growth of aerobic bacterioplankton in the overlaying water. Bacterial growth rates in the mixolimnion were limited by inorganic phosphorus or nitrogen most of the time, and the biomass of heterotrophic bacteria did not increase until, in autumn, 86% of the cells of A. purpureus appeared in the mixolimnion because of their reduced buoyant density. The increase in heterotrophic bacterial biomass, soluble phosphorus concentrations below the detection limit, and an extraordinarily high activity of alkaline phosphatase in the mixolimnion indicate a rapid liberation of organically bound phosphorus from A. purpureus cells accompanied by a simultaneous incorporation into heterotrophic bacterioplankton. High concentrations of allochthonously derived dissolved organic carbon (mean, 60 mg of C(middot)liter(sup-1)) were measured in the lake water. In Mahoney Lake, liberation of phosphorus from upwelling purple sulfur bacteria and degradation of allochthonous dissolved organic carbon as an additional carbon source render heterotrophic bacterial production largely independent of the photosynthesis of phytoplankton. A recycling of inorganic nutrients via phototrophic bacteria also appears to be relevant in other lakes with anoxic bottom waters.  相似文献

An in vitro nutrient addition bioassay was performed to testthe relative inorganic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) limitationof phytoplankton in a Spanish karst lake (El Tejo) during thelast part of the stratification period, when nutrient limitationis most pronounced. Nutrient deficiency was tested in samplesfrom three different layers of the lake: the epilimnion, metalimnionand oxic hypolimnion. Nitrogen additions, either without orcombined with P, increased phytoplankton growth in all threestrata, compared with controls or P treatments. This showedthat N was the nutrient limiting phytoplankton growth in latesummer–early fall. Since both hypolimnetic diffusion andgroundwater fluxes of N-rich waters into the lake are much reducedduring summer, N becomes the limiting nutrient as stratificationadvances. We suggest that in this Mediterranean area with lowatmospheric deposition of anthropogenic N and in lakes relativelyfree of surface run-off, nutrient supply by atmospheric depositionmight be a key factor in controlling nutrient deficiency forphytoplankton growth.  相似文献
