The late-nineteenth/early-twentieth century debate over homologous versus antithetic alternation of generations is reviewed. Supporters of both theories, at first, used Coleochaete as a model for the origin of land-plant life cycles. The early debate focused on the morphological interpretation of the sporophyte and on whether vascular cryptogams had bryophyte-like ancestors. The terms of the debate shifted after the discovery that the alternation of morphological generations was accompanied by an alternation of chromosome number. Supporters of homologous alternation now promoted a model in which land plants had been derived from an algal ancestor with an isomorphic alternation of haploid and diploid generations whereas supporters of antithetic alternation favored a model in which land plants were derived from a haploid algal ancestor with zygotic meiosis. Modern evidence that embryophytes are derived from charophycean green algae is more compatible with an updated version of the antithetic theory.  相似文献

The present investigation deals with the cultural observations on the morphology, reproduction, life cycle, cytology and taxonomy of a freshwater Cladophora, C. callicoma (L.) Kütz, from India. There is a regular isomorphic alternation of generations between quadriflagellate zoospore-producing diploid plants and biflagellate isogamete-producing haploid plants, coupled with heterothallism in the latter. Chromosome numbers of n = 12 and 2n = 24 were determined respectively for gametophytes and sporophytes. Twelve bivalents were counted in meiosis where chiasmata varied from one to three. In light of above observations, the affinity of C. callicoma with C. glomerata, to which the former has often been assigned, has been discussed. It is proposed that the C. glomerata complex, which consists of intraspecific polyploid races, might have two distinct lines of evolution with regard to life cycle; one with forms having higher ploidy levels and lacking an alternation of generations, and the other with forms having low ploidy levels and alternation of generations.  相似文献

【目的】葡萄穴粉虱是近年来入侵新疆吐鲁番地区的一种新害虫,明确其在新疆吐鲁番地区的生物学特性及发生危害情况,可为防治策略的制定提供科学依据。【方法】通过室内观察和田间调查,了解葡萄穴粉虱的形态学特征及生物学特性。【结果】葡萄穴粉虱属过渐变态。成虫复眼红棕色,翅膀表面覆盖白色蜡粉。卵倒锥形。若虫共4龄,扁椭圆形,体缘有蜡丝,末龄若虫在体壳内化蛹。4龄若虫(拟蛹)有半透明和黑色2型,越冬型4龄若虫(拟蛹)为黑色且有金属光泽。该虫在吐鲁番1年发生3~4代。越冬代成虫于4月上中旬破蛹羽化,开始在葡萄园危害,5月中旬第1代若虫孵化,5月下旬为孵化高峰;6月中旬2代若虫开始孵化,6月下旬—7月初为孵化高峰,世代重叠严重,10月中下旬之后以越冬代蛹在枯叶和枯枝上越冬。除为害葡萄外,葡萄穴粉虱还危害五叶地锦等葡萄科植物。【结论】在葡萄冬季埋土前或春季上架时,清除枯枝落叶可以大量减少越冬虫源,减轻防治压力。5月中旬第一代若虫孵化高峰期是化学防治的关键时期。在重点开展葡萄园防治的同时,应加强对五叶地锦等园林植物的防治。  相似文献

To understand the life history characteristic for expanding the distributional area to colder climates, developmental age structure of population ofCyrtomium falcatum was observed along southwestern coasts of Hokkaido at the natural northern boundary of its distribution, with reference to the alternation of generations. The length and number of pinna of fertile leaves ofCyrtomium falcatum decrease towards the northern part of Japan. In southwestern Hokkaido, typically dwarf fertile leaves and gametophytes were observed growing together on cliffs nearby the sea. To estimate the developmental ages of small and dwarf leaves, the number of venation (NV: branching number of vein from midrib) of leaves was counted on each sporophyte. The sporophyte with leaves at the simple pinna stage ranging from 0–25NV, is predominant in the population of southwestern coasts of Hokkaido. The fertility of the sporophyte seems to be achieved more than five years after the germination. The gametophytes were also observed at the location to be almost equal in number to sporophytes. The number of gametophytes and sporophytes decreases with advancement of developmental stages. In the same location at Okushiri Isl. with slight gradiency of humidity, the gametophyte is predominant on the drier cliff, while the sporophyte is predominant on the humid hole. The population ofCyrtomium falcatum at the natural northern boundary in Hokkaido, seems to have the life history characteristic with alternation of generations. Laboratory and field investigations revealed that the life history traits of exephippial and parthenogenetic generations of Daphnia differ substantially. Daphniids hatching from resting eggs grow faster and their definitive body sizes are bigger than of hatchlings from subitaneous eggs. Size at maturity for exephippial animals is significantly larger. In spite of this, they mature a few days earlier than parthenogenetic females. In this study, the difference was 3–4 days for the laboratory experiments and 1–3 days for the field. Fecundity of the exephippial generation is markedly higher. Here, the clutch size for this generation was up to 3.5–4.0 times as large as for the parthenogenetic generation. Moreover, obtained results suggest that the relationship between clutch size and body length for both generations differ significantly.Estimates of the intrinsic rate of increase for field Daphnia populations demonstrated that life history traits of exephippial animals lead to a two or threefold higher rate of increase in the conditions of invertebrate predation pressure. Under moderate fish pressure, obtained r values for the daphniids hatching from resting eggs were larger than those from subitaneous. High growth rate of exephippial females is disadvantageous only under the conditions of severe pressure by fish. Obtained results suggest that hatchlings from diapausing eggs an acceleration of population increase by several times during the beginning of the development of a population with periodical re-establishment from resting eggs.  相似文献

Several components of egg-laying behavior in 3 clones of E. dilatata were investigated. Using nearest-neighbor analyses it was shown that individual animals lay their eggs randomly within culture dishes in the absence of an artificial substrate while eggs laid in the presence of a substrate are clumped in 2 of the 3 clones studied. Animals preferentially oviposited on artificial substrates containing eggs when given a choice between artificial substrates with and without eggs of conspecifics. When given a choice of natural substrates, animals consistently laid more eggs on the plant species from which they were collected. This preference persisted for 2 generations after animals had been removed from plants. In addition, observations of neonate hatching behavior demonstrated that neonates often spend relatively long times in the immediate vicinity of hatching.  相似文献

Life table statistics and degree-day requirements for Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, a parasitoid of the glassy-winged sharpshooter Homalodisca coagulata (Say), were used to estimate the number of expected parasitoid generations in California (USA). Between two to 51 and one to 37 generations per year were estimated across different climatic regions in California, using life table and degree-day models, respectively. Temperature-based values for net reproductive rate, Ro, were estimated in California using a laboratory-derived equation and ranged from zero to approximately 48 and analyses indicate that a minimum of eight generations are required each year to sustain a population increase of G. ashmeadi. Long-term weather data from 381 weather stations across California were used with an Inverse-Distance Weighting algorithm to map temperature-based estimations for the entire state of California. This Geographic Information Systems model was used to determine number of G. ashmeadi generations based on day-degree accumulation, Tc, and Ro. GIS mapping indicated that Californian counties in the north, central west coast, central west and Sierra Nevada regions may be climatic conditions unfavorable for supporting the permanent establishment of invading populations of G. ashmeadi should H. coagulata successfully establish year-round populations in these areas. Southern counties in California that experience warmer year round temperatures and support year round populations of H. coagulata, appear to be conducive to the establishment of permanent populations of G. ashmeadi. The mechanisms facilitating G. ashmeadi invasion and the implications of these temperature-based estimates for biological control of H. coagulata are discussed.  相似文献

Evolutionary theories of senescence assume that mutations with age-specific effects exist, yet until now, there has been little experimental evidence to support this assumption. In this study, we allowed mutations to accumulate in an outbred, wild population of Drosophila melanogaster to test for age-specific differences in both male mating ability and fecundity. We assayed for age-specific effects of mutations after 10, 20, and 30 generations of mutation accumulation. For mating ability, we found the strongest effects of mutations in the first half of the life span after 20 generations, and at nearly all ages by generation 30. These results are qualitatively consistent with results from a companion study in which age-specific mortality was assayed on the same lines of D. melanogaster. By contrast, effects of fecundity were confined to late ages after 20 generations of mutation accumulation, but by generation 30, as with male mating ability, effects of novel mutations were distributed across all age classes. We discuss several possible explanations for the differences that we observe between generations within traits, and among traits, and the relevance for these patterns to models of aging as well as models of mate choice and sexual selection. The yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiaehas a limited life span that can be measured by the number of times individual cells divide. Several genetic manipulations have been shown to prolong the yeast life span. However, environmental effects that extend longevity have been largely ignored. We have found that mild, nonlethal heat stress extended yeast life span when it was administered transiently early in life. The increased longevity was due to a reduction in the mortality rate that persisted over many cell divisions (generations) but was not permanent. The genesRAS1andRAS2were necessary to observe this effect of heat stress. TheRAS2gene is consistently required for maintenance of life span when heat stress is chronic or in its extension when heat stress is transient or absent altogether.RAS1,on the other hand, appears to have a role in signaling life extension induced by transient, mild heat stress, which is distinct from its life-span-curtailing effect in the absence of stress and its lack of involvement in the response to chronic heat stress. This distinction between theRASgenes may be partially related to their different effects on growth-promoting genes and stress-responsive genes. Theras2mutation clearly hindered resumption of growth and recovery from stress, while theras1mutation did not. TheHSP104gene, which is largely responsible for induced thermotolerance in yeast, was necessary for life extension induced by transient heat stress. An interaction between mitochondrial petite mutations and heat stress was found, suggesting that mitochondria may be necessary for life extension by transient heat stress. The results raise the possibility that theRASgenes and mitochondria may play a role in the epigenetic inheritance of reduced mortality rate afforded by transient, mild heat stress.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The distribution of four species of Chaoboras over selected parts of Zimbabwe is given. The effect of temperature on the duration of the larval life cycle is discussed in relation to the generation time and the lunar periodicity of the adult emergence period. There were apparently two generations of larvae present in the habitat at any one time, although these generations were not distinct due to the variations in the time taken by the larvae to complete development at any temperature. The emergence was synchronized to the lunar cycle, but the actual moon phase at which emergence occurred was variable, as the two populations under observation both changed from new moon emergences to full moon emergences during the study. Some observations on the behaviour of adult Chaoboras edulis are given.  相似文献

Sublethal effects were evaluated in subsequent generations of whiteflies Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) arising from parental generations exposed in the four nymphal stages to the fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin. Examples of such effects include impaired fertility, production of malformations or external variations, and reduced survival of later generations. Malformations of the head, legs, wings or abdomen were not observed in adults derived from treated nymphs, nor were negative effects observed in the fecundity and fertility of the descendants of the whiteflies treated with the fungus. However, moulting problems were observed in insects descended from B. bassiana-treated whiteflies. This is the first time that such effects have been reported, with almost 30% of imagos resulting from treated nymphs unable to detach completely from the exuvia. A gradual reduction in mortality rates between subsequent generations was observed. The importance of these results is discussed in the light of findings from other studies into the effects of entomopathogenic fungi on pest insects.  相似文献

The timing of life cycles, including growth rates, was determined for eight common species of detritivorous insects in a second-order stream in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Six of the species (Zapada cinctipes, Z. haysi, Malenka californica, M. cornuta, Capnia sp., and Lepidostoma roafi) had simple, univoltine life cycles. The leuctrid stonefly Despaxia augusta has a 2-year life cycle, with an apparent egg diapause of about 6 months. The chironomid Brillia retifinis produced at least three generations per year. The major growth periods for the set of species considered here span the entire year. Adults of several species exhibited seasonal declines in size at emergence, but one species had larger adults as the emergence period proceeded. Closely related taxa had more similar life cycle timing than more distantly related species suggesting a degree of phylogenetic constraint in phenology of their life cycles. The influence of the timing of leaf drop on timing of life cycles for these animals does not fit with proposed scenarios based on fast and slow leaf processing rates.  相似文献

The symbiosis between grasses and endophytic fungi is a common phenomenon and can affect herbivore performance through acquired, chemical plant defence by fungal alkaloids. In laboratory experiments, two species of common grass aphids, Rhopalosiphum padi and Metopolophium dirhodum were tested, in a population experiment (on four plant cultivars) and individually (on one plant cultivar) for the effects of the endophyte, Neotyphodium lolii, that forms symbiotic associations with perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne. In the population experiment that lasted for four aphid generations both aphid species showed decreased population sizes when feeding on each of the four endophyte-infected cultivars. Individuals of R. padi tested individually showed reduced adult life span and fecundity when feeding on infected plants. Individuals of M. dirhodum showed no response in any of the traits measured. This suggests that R. padi individuals are more sensitive to endophyte infection than M. dirhodum individuals. However, all infected grass cultivars reduced population sizes of both aphid species over four generations. Therefore, fungal endophytes can reduce populations of aphid herbivores independent of plant cultivars.  相似文献

The efficiency with which the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto was transmitted from laboratory mice to larval and nymphal Ixodes ricinus ticks was assessed, using the polymerase chain reaction. The transmission efficiency to nymphs was significantly greater than to larvae when both fed together on the same host. Increased tick infestation levels of mice were correlated with significantly greater engorgement weights and higher B. burgdorferi transmission coefficients from mice to nymphs. These observations indicate that both the feeding success of ticks and the transmission coefficients from host to tick may be influenced by the tick infestation level of an infected host. The infestation level and the relative numbers of each life stage of the tick are factors which should be considered in the design of transmission experiments.  相似文献

Actinote anteas from Costa Rica was screened as a biological control candidate forChromolaena odorata in South Africa. Preliminary starvation trials suggest thatA. anteas is species specific. There are seven larval instars and the life cycle is completed in 101–169 days. The life cycle of Laodicea indica is described. In the Bismarck Sea this species shows a normal alternation of generations in the wet season; but in the dry season the cycle is contracted, and planulae give rise to gonothecae without formation of a hydroid colony. Medusae are liberated about 3 d after planula settlement. This life cycle pattern is previously unreported in hydromedusae. The possible adaptive value of such a life cycle and the evolution of polyp reduction in hydromedusan life cycles are discussed.  相似文献

The number of potential annual generations of the rusty grain beetle,Cryptolestes ferrugineus, was simulated in wheat stored in granaries for all crop districts in the prairie provinces of Canada each year from 1952 to 1990 using a population dynamic model driven by ecological variables. Granary size was assumed to be 6 m in diameter. Historical data for temperatures at harvest and times when storage began were used in the simulation model. A second model, which predicted the rate of temperature change at the centre of a 6-m-diameter bulk of wheat, determined environmental parameters for the population dynamic model. (Grain moisture content was assumed constant at 14.5% wet mass basis.) The combined model shows that the initial storage temperature is the most important factor responsible for predicting the number of generations and levels of infestation ofC. ferrugineus. This finding was largely validated by historical grain storage and infestation data. For various years initial grain temperature ranged from 17.7 to 37.4 °C and harvest dates were between 1 August and 20 October. The number of generations annually in simulations based on field conditions ranged from 0.35 to 6.77 with a mean of 3.29. Three or more generations result in a severe infestation and every year at least three simulated generations were completed in some crop districts. In one year, at least three generations were completed in every crop district. Harvest temperature and date permit prediction of crop districts that will potentially have the largest populations of C.ferrugineus so that early monitoring of wheat for infestations can be targeted to areas most at risk. TheNeomysis integer population of a shallow Frisian freshwater lake, situated in the north of the Netherlands, was studied from May until October 1980. The results were compared with observations on populations in other Frisian lakes, and with the results reported by other authors on brackish-water and marine populations of this species.Three generations were observed: one overwintering generation and two summer generations. Reproduction stopped completely during winter. During 1980 population densities ofN. integer were relatively low in all Frisian lakes. In Slotermeer the maximum population density was only 6 individuals m–2, production amounted to 10 mg dry wt m–2 yr–1. The annual P/B ratio was 4.0. The diet ofN. integer consisted, in terms of biomass, of more than 95% detritus and animal food, the latter mainly consisting ofBosmina and cyclopoid copepods. Feeding intensity reached a maximum at sunset. It was still high during first part of the night and was low in the morning just after sunrise.  相似文献

Summary A whole plant selection system using the haploid gametophyte generation of the fern Ceratopteris richardii has been developed to select for mutations that confer resistance or tolerance to various selection pressures. The expression of the mutations can be analyzed and characterized in both the haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte generations. Genetic analyses are facilitated by the fern's rapid life cycle and the ease of manipulating the gametophyte generation. Selection for tolerance to the herbicide paraquat has yielded two mutants which have an increased tolerance to the herbicide in both the gametophyte and sporophyte generations. Both mutants exhibit single nuclear gene inheritance patterns and appear to be closely linked or allelic.  相似文献

Dynamics of Mya arenaria beds in two bights of the Chupa Inlet (Kandalaksha Bay, White Sea) were studied on a long-term basis. Observations were carried out at 1– to 3-year intervals from 1979 up to 1999. The studied soft-shell clam beds were characterised by a substantial instability of age structure. Since 1988, only one year-class has dominated in the beds while other generations have been scarce and recruitment was not observed. This pattern of Mya bed dynamics was related neither to interannual environmental changes nor to differential reproduction success or predation effects in the benthic assemblages. Favourable conditions for spat formation in 1988 (low abundance of other M. arenaria generations), as well as for juvenile survival during the following winter, resulted in high abundance of juveniles in both investigated locations in 1989. The mortality rate (μ) in this 1988 generation varied throughout the period of investigation and was related to age. The mortality level decreased for the first 2–4 years of the life cycle, then stabilised for the next 3–4 years, and eventually increased in subsequent years. Overall μ values ranged from 0 to 1.68 year–1. The oldest specimens observed were 17 years old and had a maximum shell length of 79 mm.
