A reproductive division of labor between subordinates and established reproductives is a hallmark of eusociality. In most groups, however, workers retain some reproductive capabilities. Across insect societies, measures of successful worker reproduction in the presence of a queen, with few exceptions, indicate that worker reproduction is kept at very low levels. There are, however, certain colony-level characteristics that may influence the degree to which worker reproduction is promoted, such as queen number, queen mating frequency, and physical presence of a queen in species with multiple nesting sites (polydomy). In this study, the level of worker reproduction in field colonies of the ant species Aphaenogaster cockerelli was measured. A. cockerelli is a monogynous and polydomous species, so worker reproduction across nesting sites was investigated. None of the 297 males sampled provided any evidence of worker reproduction. Worker reproduction would have been detectable if it was present at or above a level of 1.5 % of the total males per colony. An effective mating frequency for queens of this species was found to be 1.03. Although A. cockerelli colonies have many colony-level factors potentially promoting worker reproduction (workers with active, trophic egg-producing ovaries, a single singly-mated queen, workers who are physically separated from the queen), it is evident that worker reproduction is highly regulated. Synthesizing the extensive amount of policing and fertility signaling data previously reported on this species, A. cockerelli is presented as case study for how worker reproduction is repressed and cooperation is maintained in insect societies.  相似文献

Summary Reproductive strategies have been investigated for three species of Dysdercus from Africa, D. intermedius, D. cardinalis and D. nigrofasciatus. Reproductive parameters were measured for each species on individuals cultured in the laboratory. D. cardinalis is associated more with herbaceous than with arboreal host plants and is intermediate in body size. It tended to have the least age at first reproduction, reproduced most frequently, and layed the smallest clutches on average, spreading relatively high amounts of parental investment in more clutches than the other two species. It also laid the greatest number of clutches and eggs in a lifetime. D. intermedius specializes on arboreal host plants, and is the largest of the three species. It had the greatest age at first reproduction, reproduced less frequently than D. cardinalis, and layed the largest clutches. Its parental investment over time declined earlier than that of D. cardinalis. D. intermedius layed the least number of clutches in a lifetime, but its lifetime gross reproduction was intermediate in magnitude. D. nigrofasciatus has the widest diet breadth, and is the smallest in body size. Its age at first reproduction was similar to that of D. cardinalis, but D. nigrofasciatus reproduced least frequently, laying relatively large clutches. It was similar to D. intermedius in its pattern of parental investment over time, and essentially layed the same number of clutches in a lifetime as the latter species, although its lifetime gross reproduction was the smallest. It is suggested that the reproductive strategies of the three species might have evolved as adaptations to selection events in the niches of the immature stages.  相似文献

Summary Apomixis, asexual reproduction through seed, is an obligate mode of reproduction in several species from the genus Pennisetum. Transfer of apomixis to sexual, cultivated pearl millet (P. glaucum) from a wild species P. squamulatum has resulted in an obligate apomictic backcross line with a low, but unknown number, of chromosomes from the wild species. Molecular markers (restriction fragment length polymorphisms and random amplified polymorphic DNAs) have been identified that unequivocally demonstrate the presence of P. squamulatum DNA in BC3. Three of the informative RFLP clones have been sequenced and converted to sequence-tagged sites that can be amplified by the polymerase chain reaction. Molecular genetic analysis of more advanced back-cross individuals, using the two types of polymerase chain reaction-based molecular markers, has demonstrated co-inheritance of apomictic reproduction and two of the molecular markers. The remaining five molecular markers generally co-segregate with each other but are not linked with the mode of reproduction. These results suggest that genes for apomixis apparently can be transmitted by a single chromosome. Chromosome-specific markers will provide a starting point for the mapping of this genetically intractable reproductive trait.  相似文献

Reproduction in iteroparous marine organisms is often timed with abiotic cycles and may follow lunar, tidal amplitude, or daily cycles. Among intertidal marine invertebrates, decapods are well known to time larval release to coincide with large amplitude nighttime tides, which minimizes the risk of predation. Such bimonthly cycles have been reported for few other intertidal invertebrates. We documented the reproduction of 6 gastropod species from Panama to determine whether they demonstrate reproductive cycles, whether these cycles follow a 2‐week cycle, and whether cycles are timed so that larval release occurs during large amplitude tides. Two of the species (Crepidula cf. marginalis and Nerita scabricosta) showed nonuniform reproduction, but without clear peaks in timing relative to tidal or lunar cycles. The other 4 species show clear peaks in reproduction occurring every 2 weeks. In 3 of these species (Cerithideopsis carlifornica var. valida, Littoraria variegata, and Natica chemnitzi), hatching occurred within 4 days of the maximum amplitude tides. Siphonaria palmata exhibit strong cycles, but reproduction occurred during the neap tides. Strong differences in the intensity of reproduction of Cerithideopsis carlifornica, and in particular, Littoraria variegata, between the larger and smaller spring tides of a lunar month indicate that these species time reproduction with the tidal amplitude cycle rather than the lunar cycle. For those species that reproduce during both the wet and dry seasons, we found that reproductive timing did not differ between seasons despite strong differences in temperature and precipitation. Overall, we found that most (4/6) species have strong reproductive cycles synchronized with the tidal amplitude cycle and that seasonal differences in abiotic factors do not alter these cycles.  相似文献

Hymenopteran egg parasitoids belonging to the Trichogramma genus are infected by endosymbionts of the Wolbachia genus distributed into 2 supergroups and 4 groups according to the sequence of the wsp gene. The symbionts are variously distributed according to host populations and species and induce, in most cases, thelytokous parthenogenetic reproduction and, sometimes strongly, increase fecundity. Nevertheless, after an interspecific artificial transfer, no effect on reproduction has so far been recorded. Wolbachia often have a negative effect, or no effect at all, on host fitness. Positive effects have, however, been recorded especially in completely infected species. Symbionts show a variable efficiency of vertical transmission and a variable sensitivity to high temperature in relation to host species.  相似文献

Strains of Chlamydomonas with cross-reacting sporangium wall autolysins also correspond in morphology, reproduction, development, and physiological properties. We therefore undertook a revision of the systematics of the genus based on this correlation. Isolates of Chlamydomonas available in culture collections were re-examined microscopically, preferably with respect to their reproduction and development. In particular all authentic clones, on which earlier species diagnoses had been founded, were included. Their detectable autolysins were tested crosswise in bioassays. We intend to complete and extend species diagnoses in order to separate species more precisely. - At first 7 strains with a common sporangium autolysin have been examined, four of which are the authentic cultures of the species C. aggregate Deason et Bold, C. akinetos Deason et Bold, C. applanata Pringsheim, and C. humicola Lucksch. They have been brought together under the name of the species first described, C. applanata Pringsheim, due to their apparent similarities in morphology and development. An amended species diagnosis is presented. The significance of authentic cultures as important sources of further information is discussed.  相似文献

Apomixis, the asexual formation of embryos and seeds, occurs in approximately 18% of angiosperm families. Melastomataceae exhibits a remarkable number of apomictic species, distributed among different tribes. This mode of reproduction has been elucidated in Miconieae, but remains unclarified for other groups, such as Microlicieae. Although apomixis has been previously described for Microlicieae species, the cytological basis for this phenomenon is entirely unknown in this group. Thus, populations of Microlicia fasciculata and M. polystemma were used in order to (a) investigate the presence of autonomous apomixis; (b) verify if this mode of reproduction leads to polyembryony; and (c) investigate whether apomixis may occur in parallel with the sexual process. We tested these species for autonomous fruit set and polyembryony, and pollen viability, and analyzed pollen tube growth. Anatomical techniques were used to elucidate the micro- and megasporogenesis and gametogenesis. The species showed autonomous fruit and seed formation and exhibited polyembryony. Apospory and adventitious embryony were the developmental mechanisms of apomixis in M. fasciculata and M. polystemma, respectively. Both species exhibited low pollen viability. However, some viable pollen, reduced embryo sac formation, natural pollination and pollen tube growth enable sexual reproduction and characterize these species as facultative apomicts. The independence of pollinators for fruit set, uniparental reproduction and the possibility of sexual reproduction, confer reproductive assurance and flexibility, bringing together advantages of sexual and asexual reproduction. In this sense, apomixis may have played an important role in the evolution and diversification of Microlicia, a widely distributed genus in the Brazilian Cerrado.  相似文献

Neobuxbaumia macrocephala is a long-lived columnar cactus endemic to the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley in south-central Mexico. This plant has a very restricted distribution and few recruitment events have been detected in its populations. In this study, we analyze the N. macrocephala demographic pattern using a projection matrix in order to determine the main limiting factors of this species. To accomplish this goal, we compare our results with those obtained for another species of the same genus, N. tetetzo. Considering that both species inhabit the same valley, we believe that this comparative study will offer insights into the main demographic limitations of N. macrocephala. Results showed that these species of columnar cacti have similar demographic patterns in which survival is the process with the highest relative contribution to λ, followed by growth and reproduction. Of all the life cycle stages, seeds and seedlings have the lowest survival probabilities due to a high mortality caused by seed predation and effects of direct solar radiation on germinated seeds. The estimated growth rates indicate that populations of these species of Neobuxbaumia are in a numerical equilibrium. With respect to reproduction, N. macrocephala produce a lower number of seeds per plant than N. tetetzo. This low level of sexual reproduction may decrease the probability of establishment of new individuals in N. macrocephala populations. It is suggested that pollen limitation and pre-dispersal seed predation could be some factors that limit the distribution and abundance of this columnar cactus. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Abstract In the present study, the importance of diet in terms of fecundity is compared for three species of the carabid genus Amara (Coleoptera: Carabidae), using an insect diet, two types of seed diet (Capsella bursa‐pastoris, Stellaria media) and a mixed diet. It is expected that the species of carabid studied have different food requirements for reproduction. Diet affects reproduction performance and egg production significantly. A mixed diet and both single‐seed diets are suitable for reproduction in Amara aenea (DeGeer) because a higher proportion of the females reproduce and lay significantly more eggs than on a purely insect diet. Females of Amara familiaris (Duftschmid) do not reproduce unless provided with seeds of S. media. Seeds of C. bursa‐pastoris or a mixed diet are equally suitable diets for reproduction of Amara similata (Gyllenhal); a diet of insects or seeds of S. media is unsuitable. The results support the hypothesis that the species under investigation have specific food requirements, suggesting that seed feeding has evolved to different degrees in particular species: A. aenea is omnivorous, whereas A. familiaris and A. similata specialize on the seed of a particular plant species or family. This resource partitioning facilitates co‐occurrence of carabid species.  相似文献

The evolution and maintenance of sexual reproduction is still one of the major unresolved problems in evolutionary biology. Sexual reproduction is fraught with a number of costs as compared to asexual reproduction. For example, sexuals have to produce males, which–given a 1:1 sex ratio—results in a two-fold advantage for asexuals that do not produce males. Consequently, asexuals will outperform and replace sexuals over time assuming everything else is equal. Nonetheless, a few cases of closely related asexuals and sexuals have been documented to coexist stably in natural systems. We investigated the presence of a two-fold cost in a unique system of three closely related fish species: the asexual Amazon Molly (Poecilia formosa), and two sexual species, Sailfin Molly (P. latipinna) and Atlantic Molly (P. mexicana). Amazon Molly reproduce gynogenetically (by sperm dependent parthenogenesis) and always coexist with one of the sexual species, which serves as sperm donor. In the laboratory, we compared reproductive output between P. formosa and P. mexicana as well as P. formosa and P. latipinna. We found no differences in the fecundity in either comparison of a sexual and the asexual species. Under the assumption of a 1:1 sex ratio, the asexual Amazon Molly should consequently have a full two-fold advantage and be able to outcompete sexuals over time. Hence, the coexistence of the species pairs in nature presents a paradox still to be solved.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction in C. moniliferum is described for the first time. The morphology of conjugation is quite like that of C. ehrenbergii. Homothallic strains of both species usually produce single zygospores between daughter cells that have just divided. However, 2 homothallic clones of C. moniliferum form twin zygospores between conjugants which have paired before division and conjugation. This has not been observed in C. ehrenbergii. Heterothallic strains of both species form twin zygospores in the same manner. Heterotfiallisrn seems a well-established feature in both species. Germination and the survival of 2 products of meiosis arc typical of other desmids which have been investigated.  相似文献

Lianas are important components of forest communities with a considerable impact on overall forest structure and function. Lianas are characterized by extensive clonal reproduction on the forest floor, which is important for their establishment and growth. Previous studies have suggested that clonal reproduction strategies vary substantially among liana species; however, few studies have quantitatively evaluated the clonality strategy in multiple co-occurring liana species. The primary objective of the present study was to evaluate the relative contribution of clonal reproduction and to understand the clonal proliferation processes in co-occurring liana species by assessing both small stems on the forest floor and mature stems that climbed trees. The clonal reproduction strategy in four common liana species (stem twiner: Wisteria floribunda; root climbers: Schizophragma hydrangeoides, Euonymus fortunei and Rhus ambigua) in a 6-ha plot and a belt transect within an old-growth temperate forest in central Japan was evaluated using genetic analysis. The contribution of clonal reproduction was smaller in root climbers than in W. floribunda. All W. floribunda genets with small ramets in the understory had genetically identical ramets that climbed trees, whereas few such ramets were found in root climbers. This indicates that W. floribunda mature ramets laterally produce small ramets via clonal proliferation, whereas seedlings of root climbers grow horizontally to climb trees. The results indicate that the clonal reproduction processes differ greatly among lianas and the clonal growth in lianas plays a contrasting role in their life-history strategy.  相似文献

Summary

Stichopus chloronotus (Brandt, 1835) is one among nine aspidochirotide holothurian species known to reproduce both sexually by broadcast spawning and asexually by transverse fission. New data on the sexual cycle of this species in La Réunion are presented here and information available on sexual and asexual reproduction in this species is summarised. Sexual reproduction on La Réunion shows a distinct seasonality with a main spawning period in the warm season (November-February). The spawning period the Great Barrier Reef appears to be at the same time. Some intriguing deviations from unity in sex-ratio, usually biased towards more male individuals, have been observed in both geographic regions (sex ratio at La Reunion 31:1). New data on the asexual reproduction of this species in La Réunion confirm the high rates of fission. The peak of asexual reproduction in both the Indian and Pacific Ocean was observed in winter (June-July). Thus, asexual reproduction in this species occurs outside the season for sexual reproduction. The rate of asexual reproduction appears to vary between sample locations. However, results of population genetic studies on S. chloronotus (Uthicke et al., 1999; Uthicke et al., 2001) indicated that in most populations investigated a maximum of about 60% of all individuals may be derived from sexual recruitment. Cluster analyses on genetic distances between populations grouped populations within Oceans together, with the exception of one sample from a nearshore reef of the GBR. Although genetic differences between the two regions exist, these are relatively small regarding the large geographic distance. We conclude that asexual reproduction in S. chloronotus is important to maintain local population sizes, but that larval exchange between populations mediated by sexual reproduction is important for colonisation of new areas and to provide connectivity between populations. Here, we present the first synthesis of these phenomena for a holothurian species.  相似文献

Abstract

In order to preserve ex situ rare or vulnerable species, it is necessary to characterise their reproductive mechanisms, and to locate the origin of the interference with their development in their natural habitat. Iris revoluta Colas. is a very rare endemic species of the Salento peninsula (Italy), showing scarce sexual reproduction, but good vegetative propagation through rhizomes, as many other Iris species of natural hybrid origin. For many years this Iris has been cultivated in the Botanical Garden of the Di.S.Te.B.A., University of Lecce, where a detailed study has been initiated to investigate the phenomena that may limit its sexual reproduction.  相似文献

Naturally occurring unisexual reproduction has been documented in less than 0.1% of all vertebrate species. Among vertebrates, true parthenogenesis is known only in squamate reptiles. In all vertebrate cases that have been carefully studied, the clonal or hemiclonal taxa have originated through hybridization between closely related sexual species. In contrast, parthenogenetic reproduction has arisen in invertebrates by a variety of mechanisms, including likely cases of “spontaneous” (nonhybrid) origin, a situation not currently documented in natural populations of vertebrates. Here, we present molecular data from the Neotropical night lizard genus Lepidophyma that provides evidence of independent nonhybrid origins for diploid unisexual populations of two species from Costa Rica and Panama. Our mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenies are congruent with respect to the unisexual taxa. Based on 14 microsatellite loci, heterozygosity (expected from a hybrid origin) is low in Lepidophyma reticulatum and completely absent in unisexual L. flavimaculatum. The unique value of this system will allow direct comparative studies between parthenogenetic and sexual lineages in vertebrates, with an enormous potential for this species to be a model system for understanding the mechanisms of nonhybrid parthenogenesis.  相似文献

The life history of an isolate of Polysiphonia denudata (Dillw.) Kütz. from Texas is shown by means of cultural studies to be of the Polysiphonia-type (a sequence of gametophytic, carposporophytic and tetrasporophytic phases in which the former and latter are morphologically similar). The effects of light intensity and temperature on the isolate have been investigated by a cross-gradient culture apparatus; a series of incubators was used to investigate the effects of variations in daylength on the growth and reproduction of the species. Seasonal observations were conducted on growth and reproduction of the species in nature and an attempt is made to explain the observed distribution of the species on the basis of the cultural study.  相似文献

Plant reproductive success is usually positively related to conspecific floral density, but neutral or negative effects of floral density on reproduction have also been reported. Differences in the relationship between reproduction and floral density largely originate from a trade‐off between increasing attractiveness versus increasing competition for pollinators at high floral densities. Although floral densities strongly vary in the understory of tropical forests, for instance, due to variation in light availability, little is known about the density dependence of reproduction in tropical understory plants. We used path analyses to disentangle direct and indirect effects of canopy openness and floral density on fruit set and analyzed the relationship between pollen load and floral density for two Neotropical understory plants, Heliconia metallica and Besleria melancholica. In both species, fruit set was not directly related to canopy openness, but decreased with increasing floral density. In H. metallica, canopy openness had an indirect negative effect on reproduction mediated by its effects on floral density. Effects of floral density on pollen loads were species‐specific. In B. melancholica, pollen loads linearly decreased with increasing floral density, indicating competition for pollinators at high densities. In H. metallica, pollen loads were reduced at both low and high densities, indicating an interplay of facilitative and competitive effects of floral density on pollen deposition. In contrast to other studies, we found negative density dependence of reproduction in both understory species. Negative effects of floral density on reproduction appear to be related to pollinator‐mediated effects on reproduction rather than to variation in abiotic conditions.  相似文献

Summary We examined the effect of reproduction on growth in 33 genotypes of Plantago major and 14 genotypes of P. rugelii. These two herbaceous perennials have contrasting life histories; P. major reproduces at a smaller size, and allocates a larger proportion of its biomass to reproduction, than P. rugelii. The effect of reproduction on frowth was determined experimentally using photoperiod manipulations to control level of reproduction. The difference in growth between reproductive treatments was divided by the difference in capsule weight to produce a measure of reproductive cost per g of capsule for genotypes of the two species. In both species there was substantial variation among genotypes in the effect of reproduction on growth. Much of this variation could be correlated with differences among genotypes in the extent of reproductive investment and plant size. Cost in terms of reduction in growth per g of capsule increased with reproductive investment in P. rugelii, and with plant size in P. major. We suggest the differences between species in timing and extent of reproduction are related to the differences between species in effect of reproduction on growth. Plantago rugelii may reproduce to a lesser extent than P. major because cost per g of capsule in terms of reduced vegetative biomass, increases with reproductive output in the former species, but not in the latter. Similarly, P. major may reproduce earlier than P. rugelii because cost per g of capsule increases with plant size in P. major, but not in P. rugelii.  相似文献

Fungal feeding soil invertebrates feed on a wide spectrum of fungal species suggesting that mixed diets increase fitness. We investigated relationships between food preferences for seven saprophytic fungal species/forms and fitness parameters (mortality, growth, time to reproduction, reproduction, egg size) in two Collembola species, Folsomia candida and Protaphorura armata. The fungal species/forms studied included the wild type and a melanin-deficient form of Aspergillus fumigatus to investigate the role of melanin in collembolan nutrition. Also, three mixed diets consisting of a preferred fungal species (Cladosporium cladosporioides) and species of intermediate or low food quality were investigated. Both Collembola species preferred similar fungal species/forms as food. Food preference generally matched fitness parameters, i.e. growth and reproduction of Collembola was at a maximum when feeding on preferred fungi. This was not the case for A. fumigatus. The wild type and the melanin-deficient form ranked among the least preferred fungi. Growth and reproduction of Collembola were low when feeding on the wild type but high when feeding on the melanin-deficient form indicating that the Collembola misjudged the food quality of the latter in the preference tests. The results show for the first time that genes driving melanin syntheses (pksP) strongly affect the food quality of fungi for fungal feeding invertebrates. Feeding on mixed diets generally increased growth and reproduction of Collembola except when the diets included toxic species (Penicillium sp.). The results support the nutrient balance hypothesis and also show that the detection of toxic species in the diet is important. They indicate that the widespread generalist feeding mode of Collembola maximizes fitness if toxic fungal species are avoided. The fitness parameters growth, reproduction and time until onset of reproduction were correlated closely but egg volume, which also varied with fungal diet, correlated poorly with the other fitness parameters. Variation in egg size with fungal diet shows that the diet of Collembola may have transgenerational effects.  相似文献

The optimal allocation to sexual and vegetative reproduction as well as the optimal values of other life-history characteristics such as phenology, growth and mating system are likely to depend on the life-cycle of the organism. I tested whether plants of Mimulus guttatus originating from temporarily wet populations where the species has an enforced annual life-cycle have higher allocation to sexual reproduction, lower allocation to vegetative reproduction, more rapid phenology, faster growth, and floral traits associated with a self-fertilizing mating system than plants from permanently wet populations where the species has a perennial life-cycle. I grew a total of 1377 plants originating from three populations with an annual life-cycle and 11 populations with a perennial life-cycle in a greenhouse under permanently and temporarily wet conditions. Plants of M. guttatus in permanently wet conditions had significantly more vegetative reproduction and tended to have a faster growth than plants in the temporarily wet conditions, indicating plasticity in these life-history traits. Plants from populations with an annual life-cycle invested significantly more in sexual reproduction and significantly less in vegetative reproduction than the ones from populations with a perennial life-cycle. Moreover, this study showed that plants originating from populations with an annual life-cycle have a significantly faster development and floral traits associated with autonomous self-fertilization. In conclusion, this study suggests that there has been adaptive evolution of life history traits of M. guttatus in response to natural watering conditions that determine the life span of the species.  相似文献
