Revealing the relationships between perceptual representations in the brain and mechanisms of adult perceptual learning is of great importance, potentially leading to significantly improved training techniques both for improving skills in the general population and for ameliorating deficits in special populations. In this review, we summarize the essentials of reverse hierarchy theory for perceptual learning in the visual and auditory modalities and describe the theory's implications for designing improved training procedures, for a variety of goals and populations. 相似文献

We assessed leaf-area density (LAD; m2 m−3) within the crown of Aucuba japonica (Cornaceae) growing under different light regimes and analyzed the components of crown architecture that most influenced
variation in LAD. At a whole-crown level, extension-unit (EU) density (EUs/m3) had the greatest impact on LAD. The number of leaves per unit EU length and EU length had a wide range of impacts depending
on the degree of crowding of foliage on the EU. Leaf size had a lesser impact on LAD. LAD was higher in the uppermost crown
and declined towards the base. The non-uniformity of LAD among crown layers was much greater under high irradiance. Individuals
under high irradiance achieved greater LAD by increased branching, well-marked EU dimorphism and a larger number of leaves
per unit EU length; the reverse was true for the individuals under low irradiance. We identified two distinct modes of growth
response to light regime. Under high irradiance, individuals responded by differential growth between the layers of crowns
with the lower crown suppressed and growth in the upper crown increased. Conversely, shaded individuals did not respond by

Ependymins beta and gamma (MW 32,000 and 26,000 daltons) are two secreted goldfish brain glycoproteins that exhibit a specifically enhanced turnover rate when the animals successfully acquire a new pattern of swimming behaviour. Both proteins are bound identically to concanavalin A and can be isolated from brain extracellular fluid and from brain cytoplasm by lectin affinity chromatography. Radioimmunoassay data, using purified 125I-labeled ependymins and antisera directed against ependymin beta or ependymin gamma, show complete cross-reactivity between the two proteins. It is demonstrated by Scatchard-plot analysis that the antisera recognize identical immunological determinants in both proteins. The amino acid composition of the ependymins is similar, and several identical polypeptide fragments are obtained after limited proteolysis with Staphylococcus aureus protease. The proteins are capable of forming complexes of the compositions gamma 2, beta gamma, and beta 2. A protease present in the extracellular fluid of goldfish brain promotes proteolysis of ependymin beta to ependymin gamma. The finding that ependymin gamma is physiologically derived from ependymin beta suggests the possibility that ependymin beta might exert its biological function during consolidation of new behavioural patterns via smaller polypeptide fragments. 相似文献

Optimal functioning of the hypothalamo–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis is paramount to maximizing fitness in vertebrates. Research in laboratory mammals has suggested that maternally-induced stress can cause significant variation in the responsiveness of an offspring's HPA axis involving both pre- and post-natal developmental mechanisms. However, very little is known regarding effects of maternal stress on the variability of offspring adrenocortical functioning in free-living vertebrates. Here we use an experimental approach that independently lowers the quality of both the pre- and post-natal developmental environment to examine programming and plasticity in the responsiveness of the HPA axis in fledglings of a free-living passerine, the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris). We found that mimicking a hormonal signal of poor maternal condition via an experimental pre-natal increase in yolk corticosterone decreased the subsequent responsiveness of the HPA axis in fledglings. Conversely, decreasing the quality of the post-natal developmental environment (by decreasing maternal provisioning capability via a maternal feather-clipping manipulation) increased subsequent responsiveness of the HPA axis in fledglings, apparently through direct effects on nestling body condition. The plasticity of these responses was sex-specific with smaller female offspring showing the largest increase in HPA reactivity. We suggest that pre-natal, corticosterone-induced, plasticity in the HPA axis may be a ‘predictive adaptive response’ (PAR): a form of adaptive developmental plasticity where the advantage of the induced phenotype is manifested in a future life-history stage. Further, we introduce a new term to define the condition-driven post-natal plasticity of the HPA axis to an unpredictable post-natal environment, namely a ‘reactive adaptive response’ (RAR). This study confirms that the quality of both the pre- and post-natal developmental environment can be a significant source of variation in the responsiveness of the HPA axis, and provides a frame-work for examining ecologically-relevant sources of stress-induced programming and plasticity in this endocrine system in a free-living vertebrate, respectively. 相似文献

Metabolism involves multiple elements. While we know much about the allometry in metabolic response of organisms to energy (carbon, C) availability, little is known about how different-sized organisms respond to the relative availability of elements. I experimentally manipulated availability of phosphorus (P) relative to C, to test whether dietary C : P affects metabolism in four species of Daphnia , spanning an order of magnitude in body mass. Results indicated that the slope of the relationship between individual respiration and body mass was M 0.83 under a balanced diet (C : P c. 150), and M 0.67 under an imbalanced diet (C : P c. 800). Increased respiration under dietary imbalance was not due to increased ingestion. The change in the scaling exponent was due to the greater respiratory response of smaller species to altered diets. Diet-induced metabolic plasticity contributes to variation in metabolic allometry, at least at such small scales of body size. 相似文献

Donald Hebb chose visual learning in primary visual cortex (V1) of the rodent to exemplify his theories of how the brain stores information through long-lasting homosynaptic plasticity. Here, we revisit V1 to consider roles for bidirectional ‘Hebbian’ plasticity in the modification of vision through experience. First, we discuss the consequences of monocular deprivation (MD) in the mouse, which have been studied by many laboratories over many years, and the evidence that synaptic depression of excitatory input from the thalamus is a primary contributor to the loss of visual cortical responsiveness to stimuli viewed through the deprived eye. Second, we describe a less studied, but no less interesting form of plasticity in the visual cortex known as stimulus-selective response potentiation (SRP). SRP results in increases in the response of V1 to a visual stimulus through repeated viewing and bears all the hallmarks of perceptual learning. We describe evidence implicating an important role for potentiation of thalamo-cortical synapses in SRP. In addition, we present new data indicating that there are some features of this form of plasticity that cannot be fully accounted for by such feed-forward Hebbian plasticity, suggesting contributions from intra-cortical circuit components. 相似文献

Adult male Wistar rats were given either a single training trial or one training trial per day during 3 days followed by a retention test trial in an inhibitory avoidance (IA) task. In animals given a single training trial, pretraining, but not pretest bilateral infusion of the NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist d,l-2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid (AP5) (5.0 μg) into the CA1 hippocampal area blocked IA retention. In animals given three training trials, infusions of AP5 given prior to each of the three training trials severely impaired, but did not block retention. The results indicate that NMDA receptors in the hippocampus are involved in the formation, but not in expression, of aversive memory. In addition, rats given repeated training were able to show a mild improvement of performance across training trials, possibly through mechanisms that do not depend on NMDA receptor activation in the dorsal hippocampus. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. We examined the effects of surfactant protein A (SP-A), a collectin, on the interaction of Pneumocystis murina with its host at the beginning, early to middle, and late stages of infection. Pneumocystis murina from SP-A wild-type (WT) mice inoculated intractracheally into WT mice (WTS -WTR ) adhered well to alveolar macrophages, whereas organisms from SP-A knockout (KO) mice inoculated into KO mice (KOS -KOR ) did not. Substitution of WT mice as the source of organisms (WTS -KOR ) or recipient host macrophages (KOS -WTR ) restored adherence to that found with WTS -WTR mice. In contrast, when immunosuppressed KO and WT mice were inoculated with P. murina from a homologous source (KOS -KOR , WTS -WTR ) or heterologous source (WTS -KOR , KOS -WTR ) and followed sequentially, WTS -KOR mice had the highest levels of infection at weeks 3 and 4; these mice also had the highest levels of the chemokine macrophage inflammatory protein-2 and neutrophils in lavage fluid at week 3. Surfactant protein-A administered to immunosuppressed KOS -KOR mice with Pneumocystis pneumonia for 8 wk as a therapeutic agent failed to lower the organism burden. We conclude that SP-A can correct the host immune defect in the beginning of P. murina infection, but not in the middle or late stages of the infection. 相似文献
