Crowd evacuations are paradigmatic examples for collective behaviour, as interactions between individuals lead to the overall movement dynamics. Approaches assuming that all individuals interact in the same way have significantly improved our understanding of pedestrian crowd evacuations. However, this scenario is unlikely, as many pedestrians move in social groups that are based on friendship or kinship. We test how the presence of social groups affects the egress time of individuals and crowds in a representative crowd evacuation experiment. Our results suggest that the presence of social groups increases egress times and that this is largely due to differences at two stages of evacuations. First, individuals in social groups take longer to show a movement response at the start of evacuations, and, second, they take longer to move into the vicinity of the exits once they have started to move towards them. Surprisingly, there are no discernible time differences between the movement of independent individuals and individuals in groups directly in front of the exits. We explain these results and discuss their implications. Our findings elucidate behavioural differences between independent individuals and social groups in evacuations. Such insights are crucial for the control of crowd evacuations and for planning mass events. 相似文献

We investigated whether and how comprehending sentences that describe a social context influences our motor behaviour. Our stimuli were sentences that referred to objects having different connotations (e.g., attractive/ugly vs. smooth/prickly) and that could be directed towards the self or towards “another person” target (e.g., “The object is ugly/smooth. Bring it to you/Give it to another person”). Participants judged whether each sentence was sensible or non-sensible by moving the mouse towards or away from their body. Mouse movements were analysed according to behavioral and kinematics parameters. In order to enhance the social meaning of the linguistic stimuli, participants performed the task either individually (Individual condition) or in a social setting, in co-presence with the experimenter. The experimenter could either act as a mere observer (Social condition) or as a confederate, interacting with participants in an off-line modality at the end of task execution (Joint condition). Results indicated that the different roles taken by the experimenter affected motor behaviour and are discussed within an embodied approach to language processing and joint actions. 相似文献

The meaning of population pressure is discussed and, with the help of a formula, its five main components (people, rate of increase of people, food-producing acreage, protein nutrition and industrialization) are analyzed.Factors which have eased population pressure in the past are considered under the headings of political violence (war and genocide), natural disaster (famine and disease), and social action (increased local protein supply, emigration, industrialization and birth control).Birth control is the first prerequisite to an easing of population pressure; the effectiveness of the Japanese and the Indian programs is discussed. The crippling burden of preventable disease, shown to be a major obstacle to the development of sophisticated industries, presents a challenge to Western medical men who so far have done little to meet it. 相似文献

Past research has shown that position in a social hierarchy modulates one''s social attention, as in the gaze cueing effect. While studies have manipulated the social status of others with whom the participants interact, we believe that a sense of one''s own social power is also a crucial factor affecting gaze following. In two experiments, we primed the social power of participants, using different approaches, to investigate the participants'' performance in a subsequent gaze cueing task. The results of Experiment 1 showed a stronger gaze cueing effect among participants who were primed with low social power, compared to those primed with high social power. Our predicted gender difference (i.e., women showing a stronger gaze cueing effect than men) was confirmed and this effect was found to be dominated by the lower social power condition. Experiment 2 manipulated the level of danger in the context and replicated the joint impact of gender and one''s perceived social power on gaze cueing effect, especially in the low danger context, in comparison to the high danger context. These findings demonstrate that one''s perceived social power has a concerted effect on social attention evoked by gaze, along with other factors such as gender and characteristics of the environment, and suggest the importance of further research on the complex relationship between an individual''s position in the social hierarchy and social attention. 相似文献

Genetic interactions can strongly influence the fitness effects of individual mutations, yet the impact of these epistatic interactions on evolutionary dynamics remains poorly understood. Here we investigate the evolutionary role of epistasis over 50,000 generations in a well-studied laboratory evolution experiment in Escherichia coli. The extensive duration of this experiment provides a unique window into the effects of epistasis during long-term adaptation to a constant environment. Guided by analytical results in the weak-mutation limit, we develop a computational framework to assess the compatibility of a given epistatic model with the observed patterns of fitness gain and mutation accumulation through time. We find that a decelerating fitness trajectory alone provides little power to distinguish between competing models, including those that lack any direct epistatic interactions between mutations. However, when combined with the mutation trajectory, these observables place strong constraints on the set of possible models of epistasis, ruling out many existing explanations of the data. Instead, we find that the data are consistent with a “two-epoch” model of adaptation, in which an initial burst of diminishing-returns epistasis is followed by a steady accumulation of mutations under a constant distribution of fitness effects. Our results highlight the need for additional DNA sequencing of these populations, as well as for more sophisticated models of epistasis that are compatible with all of the experimental data. 相似文献

Exposure to crowding is said to be aversive, yet people also seek out and enjoy crowded situations. We surveyed participants at two crowd events to test the prediction of self-categorization theory that variable emotional responses to crowding are a function of social identification with the crowd. In data collected from participants who attended a crowded outdoor music event (n = 48), identification with the crowd predicted feeling less crowded; and there was an indirect effect of identification with the crowd on positive emotion through feeling less crowded. Identification with the crowd also moderated the relation between feeling less crowded and positive emotion. In data collected at a demonstration march (n = 112), identification with the crowd predicted central (most dense) location in the crowd; and there was an indirect effect of identification with the crowd on positive emotion through central location in the crowd. Positive emotion in the crowd also increased over the duration of the crowd event. These findings are in line with the predictions of self-categorization theory. They are inconsistent with approaches that suggest that crowding is inherently aversive; and they cannot easily be explained through the concept of ‘personal space’. 相似文献

We develop here a multi-agent model of the creation of knowledge (scientific progress or technological evolution) within a community of researchers devoted to such endeavors. In the proposed model, agents learn in a physical-technological landscape, and weight is attached to both individual search and social influence. We find that the combination of these two forces together with random experimentation can account for both i) marginal change, that is, periods of normal science or refinements on the performance of a given technology (and in which the community stays in the neighborhood of the current paradigm); and ii) radical change, which takes the form of scientific paradigm shifts (or discontinuities in the structure of performance of a technology) that is observed as a swift migration of the knowledge community towards the new and superior paradigm. The efficiency of the search process is heavily dependent on the weight that agents posit on social influence. The occurrence of a paradigm shift becomes more likely when each member of the community attaches a small but positive weight to the experience of his/her peers. For this parameter region, nevertheless, a conservative force is exerted by the representatives of the current paradigm. However, social influence is not strong enough to seriously hamper individual discovery, and can act so as to empower successful individual pioneers who have conquered the new and superior paradigm. 相似文献

By means of infrared thermography and without disturbing social interactions, the correlation between thoracic temperature in honeybees, Apis mellifera carnica, upon their return to the hive and their foraging distance was investigated. Thoracic temperature while dancing and walking and during trophallactic contact with hive bees decreased with increasing flight distance. In bees foraging 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 molar sucrose solutions from a distance of 120 m, dancing temperature amounted to 38.4, 40.1, 40.9 and 40.6 °C, respectively; while in bees foraging from a distance of 2950 m it amounted to 36.6, 38.4, 38.6 and 39.1 °C, respectively. The rate of decrease in dancing temperature per 1000 m increase in flight distance was 0.64, 0.47, 0.81 and 0.54 °C with a 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 molar sucrose solution, respectively. Both at short and at long flight distances, the relationship between thoracic temperature and sucrose concentration of the food followed a non-linear curve, which flattened at concentrations higher than 1 mol/1. The experiments showed that inside the hive the foragers' level of thermoregulation depends not only on the energy (sugar) content of the food; but rather, the level of thermoregulation corresponds to the general quality of the food source, which includes both energy content and distance from the hive. Because the thermal behaviour of foragers correlates with several behavioural parameters indicating the bees' foraging tendency and their eagerness to dance, thoracic temperature seems to be a correlate of the profitability of foraging. 相似文献

BackgroundPhysical activity is an important component of health. Recommendations based on sensor measurements are sparse in older people. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of objectively measured walking and sedentary duration on four-year mortality in community-dwelling older people.MethodsBetween March 2009 and April 2010, physical activity of 1271 participants (≥65 years, 56.4% men) from Southern Germany was measured over one week using a thigh-worn uni-axial accelerometer (activPAL; PAL Technologies, Glasgow, Scotland). Mortality was assessed during a four-year follow-up. Cox-proportional-hazards models were used to estimate the associations between walking (including low to high intensity) and sedentary duration with mortality. Models were adjusted for age and sex, additional epidemiological variables, and selected biomarkers.ResultsAn inverse relationship between walking duration and mortality with a minimum risk for the 3rd quartile (102.2 to128.4 minutes walking daily) was found even after multivariate adjustment with HRs for quartiles 2 to 4 compared to quartile 1 of 0.45 (95%-CI: 0.26; 0.76), 0.18 (95%-CI: 0.08; 0.41), 0.39 (95%-CI: 0.19; 0.78), respectively. For sedentary duration an age- and sex-adjusted increased mortality risk was observed for the 4th quartile (daily sedentary duration ≥1137.2 min.) (HR 2.05, 95%-CI: 1.13; 3.73), which diminished, however, after full adjustment (HR 1.63, 95%-CI: 0.88; 3.02). Furthermore, our results suggest effect modification between walking and sedentary duration, such that in people with low walking duration a high sedentary duration was noted as an independent factor for increased mortality.ConclusionsIn summary, walking duration was clearly associated with four-year overall mortality in community-dwelling older people. 相似文献

Polystyrene Petri dishes are in use in hundreds of thousands of laboratories world wide. Cell culture experiments performed in them provide fundamental information in a wide range of applications, including but not limited to testing novel biomaterials and pharmaceuticals, and stem cell research. These experiments cost billions of dollars per year. In this study we report on a potential deficiency of polystyrene Petri dishes, possibly caused by an increase in interracial pH under relevant culture condi-tions and affecting cell performance. We conclude that cell performance on Petri dishes could be improved by improving the Petri dishes. As a spin-off of our study we postulate the concept that cancer cells and stem cells are social. It is impossible to validate this concept on the basis of the model established in this paper. However. the coherence of our insights may encourage further study and lead to the development of a qualitative improvement of cell culture devices, including Petri dishes and culture flasks, to the identification of potential strategies for chemotherapy and chemoprevention that could suppress progression of metastasis, and to the establishment of improved settings for tissue engineering and stem cell research. An immediate recom-mendation of our study is to use chemically and biologically inert substrates for important cell culture experiments, for example, nanocrystalline diamond. 相似文献

The social behavour of trapped wild rats, laboratory-bred descendants of wild rats, and agouti laboratory rats, all Rattus norvegicus , was compared in encounters between pairs of adult males. Pairs of rats of the same type shared a large cage divided by a partition, which was removed at the beginning of each 20 minute observation period. Ten defined categories of behaviour were recorded. The Wild rats Attacked and Threatened and Ran Away more often than the other groups, while the Agoutis were generally more active, especially in investigatory behaviour, and maintained their initial levels of activity in the second encounter. The third group was intermediate in most respects. These findings are related to differences in genotype and environment. 相似文献

Temporal organization in phototactic rhythm in male Clarias batrachus was studied in a choice chamber consisting of a photic zone and an aphotic zone. Results indicate that most of the fishes exhibited a statistically significant 24-h variation in the frequency of visits to the photic zone with a peak frequency at late night or early morning. Cosinor analysis of phototactic index (PI) values also yielded comparable results. This behaviour of C. batrachus shows similarity with its other activities, like air gulping, surfacing, foraging or predation that occur chiefly at night. The light intensity at the surface of a natural water body is more than at the bottom, even at night. Therefore, the peak phototactic activity observed in C. batrachus in the night or early morning could be attributed to its daily migration from the bottom to the surface of the water bodies. The results of the present study might be useful in aquaculture practice and inland fishing. 相似文献

Although heart disease and cancer are the number one and two causes of death in the United States, respectively, obesity is gaining speed as a contributing cause to both of those conditions, along with diabetes, arthritis, dyslipidemia, coronary heart disease, gallbladder disease, and certain malignancies. Nearly one-third of the adults in the United States is overweight with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2, and another third of the adult population is obese, with a BMI greater than 30 kg/m2. This article reviews the root causes of obesity, the societal implications, and the implications of obesity on various urologic diseases.Key words: Obesity, Morbid obesity, Body mass index, Exercise, Weight loss, Diet, EpidemicMore than 20% of adults in the United States are clinically obese, defined by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or higher, and an additional 30% are overweight, with a BMI between 25 and 30 kg/m2.1 An environment that promotes excessive food intake and discourages physical activity lies at the root of the current obesity epidemic. Although humans have excellent physiologic mechanisms to defend against body weight loss, they have only weak physiologic mechanisms to defend against body weight gain when food is abundant. So much has been discussed about the obesity epidemic that it’s easy to think the issue is being blown out of proportion. After all, people putting on a few pounds may not seem to warrant the proclamation of a national emergency. Although obesity may not attract the degree of attention that heart disease and cancer do, it is a serious public health issue. Experts agree that, as more and more obese children become obese adults, the diseases associated with obesity, such as heart disease, cancer, and particularly diabetes, will surge. The obesity epidemic in the United States is an unintended consequence of the economic, social, and technologic advances realized during the past several decades. The food supply is abundant and low in cost, and palatable foods with high caloric density are readily available in prepackaged forms and at fast-food restaurants. Laborsaving technologies have greatly reduced the amount of physical activity that used to be part of everyday life, and the widespread availability of electronic devices in the home, school, and office has promoted a sedentary lifestyle, particularly among children.A recent study estimated that medical expenditures attributed to overweight and obesity accounted for 9.1% of total US medical expenditures in 1998, and might have reached $78.5 billion dollars.2 Today, the healthcare costs attributed to obesity are estimated to be $190 billion—nearly 21% of total US healthcare costs.3 Expenditures will continue to rise, particularly due to increases in the prevalence of obesity and the cost of related healthcare.Total healthcare costs attributable to this obesity epidemic are expected to double every decade, reaching $860.7 to $956.9 billion by 2030, accounting for 16% to 18% of total US healthcare costs, or 1 in every 6 dollars spent on healthcare. 4 In addition, obesity is likely to result in a decreased life expectancy for our population. Current US generations may have a shorter life expectancy than their parents if this obesity epidemic cannot be controlled.5 Based on nationally representative data and the assumptions of a future of increased obesity rates, along with increased healthcare costs, this paints an alarming picture of the future obesity epidemic. Projections show that if the trends continue, in 15 years, 80% of all American adults will be overweight or obese.6 相似文献
