The effect of exclusion of individual water-soluble (thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, cyanocobalamin, pantothenic acid, folic acid, niacin, biotin, choline, inositol, ascorbic acid) and fat-soluble vitamins (vit. A, D, K and E) in semi-purified diets on growth and survival of juvenile shrimp, P. monodon was studied in the laboratory for 8 weeks. Diets lacking riboflavin and vitamin K did not affect growth and survival of shrimp. However, deletion of inositol and choline resulted in poor growth. Maximum growth was observed in the control diet (C1) which was supplemented with all vitamins. Diet deficient in ascorbic acid, biotin, folic acid, niacin, thiamine and alpha-tocopherol resulted in poor appetite and poorer feed conversion efficiency. All treatments except the control (C1) resulted in histological changes in the digestive gland cells. Detachment or destruction of the epithelial cells was observed in all treatments lacking individual vitamins but more severely in the treatment without a vitamin supplement followed by inositol, choline and ascorbic acid deficient diets.  相似文献

1. A wide range of species that are cultivated in commercial mariculture are planktonic during at least part of their life cycle; for example, the larval stages of shellfish (shrimp and molluscs) and the live feeds (rotifers, brine shrimp, copepods) used in the larviculture of marine fish and shellfish. Over the last decades various techniques have been developed to deliver nutrients to these zooplanktonic organisms either through artificial diets or by manipulating the composition of the live prey fed to the carnivorous stages. This paper reviews the methodology that has allowed aquaculturists to gain knowledge of nutritional requirements and may offer interesting opportunities for ecologists to verify the importance of key nutrients in the natural food chain of marine as well as freshwater ecosystems.

Live micro-algae can be replaced partially or completely in the diet of filter-feeders such as rotifers, Artemia , shrimp larvae and bivalves, by various types of preserved algae, micro-encapsulated diets and yeast-based diets, whereas lipid emulsions and liposomes may be utilized to supplement specific lipid-and water-soluble nutrients, respectively. Microbound and micro-encapsulated diets have been designed to supplement live feed in the culture of micro-predators such as fish and shrimp larvae.

Live prey organisms, in particular rotifers and Artemia , can be 'bio-encapsulated' with a variety of enrichment diets to manipulate their content in certain nutrients, including ω3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (FA) and the vitamins C, A and E. Nevertheless, the enrichment techniques are not applicable for all nutrients and prey organisms. Phospholipid composition is difficult to manipulate through the diet of live feed and the enrichment of the essential FA docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is hampered in most Artemia species due to the catabolism of this FA following enrichment.  相似文献

Lipotoxicity is a metabolic abnormality frequently observed during the development of obesity and is the main cause of several changes in the metabolic observed during metabolic syndrome. Consistent consumption of diets high in saturated fat or simple carbohydrates combined with low physical activity are the main causes of obesity and its comorbidities. However, the contribution of dietary protein and, in particular, the contribution due to the type of dietary protein, to the process of obesity and its metabolic consequences are less well-understood. In this review, we showed that the type of dietary protein has a significant contribution to the process of lipotoxicity through the modulation of insulin secretion and the regulation of adipocyte metabolic function. Consumption of soy protein stimulates insulin secretion to a lower extent than casein despite the fact that both are high-quality proteins. The amino acid profiles of soy protein and its isoflavones are responsible for the reduced insulin secretion. Also, soy protein increases insulin sensitivity, whereas casein has the opposite effect. Consequently, soy protein reduces SREBP-1 expression in the liver leading to low accumulation of hepatic triglycerides, despite the consumption of a high-fat diet. Furthermore, soy protein reduces adipocyte hypertrophy, hyperleptinemia, and free fatty acid concentration. Thus, the influx of FA into the liver decreases, and hepatic oxidation of FA increases. These metabolic changes result in a decrease in lipid depots and ceramide which reduce hepatic lipotoxicity, whereas casein produces the opposite effect. This study emphasizes that the type of dietary protein has an important effect on lipotoxicity.  相似文献

Storage proteins have been found to play a major role in insect metamorphosis and egg production and are accumulated during the actively feeding larval stage. Yet few studies have focused on how nutrition affects storage protein levels. Three storage proteins were identified in male and female Heliothis virescens pupae, one arylphorin and two putative high-methionine hexamers. Storage proteins were quantified in early pupae and in pharate adults. Storage protein levels peaked in 48-h pupae and were more abundant in females across all stages. Both male and female pharate adults retained a portion of total storage protein levels and females retained greater levels overall. In females, post-eclosion protein reserves will likely be used toward egg manufacturing, while the role of protein reserves in males remains speculative. In our previous study of H. virescens larvae, we found that protein-derived growth in females progressively increased as dietary protein levels increased. Our present data show that levels of storage protein also increased progressively along with dietary protein levels. This suggests that females allocated protein, in excess of adult tissue formation needs, toward storage protein. Our study is the first to demonstrate how responsive storage protein levels can be in face of varying levels of dietary protein.  相似文献
