Groups of four Atlantic salmon parr were established and the dominant individual identified. Feeding responses were then observed in the remaining (subordinate) fish housed in one of three conditions: in the same compartment as the dominant fish (full exposure), separated from it by a transparent partition (visual exposure) or behind an opaque partition (isolated). Subordinate parr in the full exposure condition responded to and ate fewer food pellets than did the dominant fish. However, subordinate parr in the visual exposure condition and in the isolation condition fed actively, indicating that neither visual intimidation nor long-term stress-induced reduction of appetite were responsible for the reduced food intake of subordinate parr in direct contact with dominants. Dominant parr and subordinates in the visual exposure condition, but not subordinates in the exposed condition, moved further from their feeding station when attacking food items that were contested by a competitor compared with the distance moved for uncontested items. The presence of a competitor therefore forced both dominant and visually exposed subordinates to pay higher costs while foraging.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake of growth hormone transgenic coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch was measured in individual fish with a closed-system respirometer and was compared with that of similar-sized non-transgenic control coho salmon during starvation and when fed a fixed ration or to satiation. Transgenic and control fish did not differ in their standard oxygen uptake after 4 days of starvation, although control fish had a higher routine oxygen uptake, scope for spontaneous activity and initial acclimation oxygen uptake. During feeding, transgenic fish ate significantly more than control fish, and had an overall oxygen uptake that was 1·7 times greater than control fish. When fish that had eaten the same per cent body mass were compared, transgenic fish had an oxygen uptake that was 1·4 times greater than control fish. Differences in oxygen uptake in growth hormone transgenic coho salmon and non-transgenic fish appear to be due to the effects of feeding, acclimation and activity level, and not to a difference in basal metabolism.  相似文献

The daily feeding rhythm and rations of the humpback salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, the sockeyed salmon O. nerka, and the chum salmon O. keta during marine prespawning migrations is investigated with consideration of materials collected at daily stations in waters off eastern Kamchatka in June–July 1999 and 2001 (from catches of drift nets). The bulk of humpback salmon and sockeyed salmon food consists of euphausiids, hyperiids, large copepods, pteropods, and fish juveniles. In the food of chum salmon, pteropods dominated. In a 24-h period, salmon manifest a pronounced evening peak of stomach fullness, while at night feeding discontinues. Samples collected in the morning consisted of fish who had just started feeding after the night pause. In addition to nightly period of rest, all species manifested a daytime decrease in foraging activity, though less pronounced than in the night. The daily rhythm of Pacific salmons’s feeding depends on the vertical migrations of their food items (representatives of sound-scattering layers). During the marine feeding period, the most intensive feeding is recorded in the humpback salmon and chum salmon. The daily ration of the humpback salmon is lower than that of the chum salmon but includes animals of higher food value. Due to a high digestion rate in combination with a large stomach volume, the chum salmon can consume a large quantity of low-calorific food in a short time. The daily ration of the sockeyed salmon is considerably lower than that of other salmon species.  相似文献

Ecological interactions between natural and hatchery juvenile salmon during their early marine residence, a time of high mortality, have received little attention. These interactions may negatively influence survival and hamper the ability of natural populations to recover. We examined the spatial distributions and size differences of both marked (hatchery) and unmarked (a high proportion of which are natural) juvenile Chinook salmon in the coastal waters of Oregon and Washington from May to June 1999–2009. We also explored potential trophic interactions and growth differences between unmarked and marked salmon. Overlap in spatial distribution between these groups was high, although catches of unmarked fish were low compared to those of marked hatchery salmon. Peak catches of hatchery fish occurred in May, while a prolonged migration of small unmarked salmon entered our study area toward the end of June. Hatchery salmon were consistently longer than unmarked Chinook salmon especially by June, but unmarked salmon had significantly greater body condition (based on length-weight residuals) for over half of the May sampling efforts. Both unmarked and marked fish ate similar types and amounts of prey for small (station) and large (month, year) scale comparisons, and feeding intensity and growth were not significantly different between the two groups. There were synchronous interannual fluctuations in catch, length, body condition, feeding intensity, and growth between unmarked and hatchery fish, suggesting that both groups were responding similarly to ocean conditions.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon have a variable life cycle. In good growing conditions, underyearling fish may metamorphose into the migratory smolt phase during their second spring, or delay at least a further year. The strategy adopted by particular fish appears to become fixed during their first summer. This paper examines whether either feeding efficiency or dominance in mid-summer correlates with the life-history strategy adopted. Eighty fish were individually marked and their feeding efficiency (= mean handling time for food items) and dominance rank measured under laboratory conditions in mid-July. Growth rates of the fish were then monitored over the next three months, until developmental strategies became apparent. Discriminant and logistic regression analyses revealed that both dominance rank and size attained by July were independent, significant predictors of future developmental pattern (the age at metamorphosis being correctly predicted on the basis of rank and size in 84% of cases) whereas feeding efficiency had no effect. Thus fish that were dominant or larger two months after first feeding or both had a greater probability of migrating after only one year in freshwater than those more subordinate or smaller or both.  相似文献

Growth hormone (GH) gene transgenesis has allowed the production of salmon with an inherently increased growth potential, on average two to threefold higher compared with daily specific growth rates observed in normal, non‐transgenic fish. This difference quickly results in animals of very different sizes at age, and is associated with specific morphological effects and enhanced appetites in transgenic animals. However, less is known of the feeding and antipredator behaviour of GH‐transgenic fish, information that can help with predictions of potential ecological consequences of release or escape of transgenic fish into the wild. In a series of experiments, transgenic (T) and normal (N) coho salmon of varying age and size (from 0.5 to 40 g, 3.5–21 mo) were studied singly, in pairs, and in groups during feeding and simulated predation threat. Vertical position generally did not differ between T and N fry, but at larger size (>4 g) T fish remained closer to the surface than N fish both during feeding and predatory attacks, probably as a consequence of inherent differences in feeding motivation and later reinforcement by associative learning. This difference in vertical position was not the result of competition as it remained even after either fish in the pair had been removed. In nature, where predators may attack from above (birds) or below (fish), this kind of behaviour may translate into higher risk of predation, which could increase mortality and lower the fitness of transgenic fish, unless their increased growth rate can compensate for the increased risk‐taking.  相似文献

Using juvenile coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, we tested predictions arising from dynamic optimization models of foraging under predation risk. Coho juveniles from two size groups raised in the laboratory were individually fed varying food rations. Their willingness to risk predation was measured as the time to resume foraging after presentation of a predator model. Small fish (mean weight 1.5 g) resumed feeding earlier than larger fish (3.5 g) as predicted by dynamic models under summer photoperiod but not under autumn photoperiod. Contrary to predictions, larger fish did not increase risk taking and small fish decreased risk taking between summer and autumn treatments. Food ration significantly influenced time to resume feeding only in small coho. A simple mechanistic model we proposed to explain feeding motivation under risk as a function of body size and prior growth rate was not sufficient to explain observed variation in risk taking. This study suggests that coho salmon use photoperiod and their own body size as cues for long-term, state-dependent adjustments of feeding behaviour. The lower risk taking of larger fish is probably an example of asset protection, whereby larger animals accept less predation risk to protect their greater accumulated fitness value. The decrease of risk taking in small fish in the autumn was possibly caused by a switch of life history trajectory towards delayed smolting. In many species where social hierarchy mediates conflict over resources, dominant individuals monopolize food, shelter and reproductive opportunities. The benefits of social dominance, however, can often be offset by a prior residence advantage, whereby individuals arriving first in a new habitat obtain, and subsequently defend, the most profitable sites. We investigated the relative influence of these two factors on the acquisition of feeding territories by juvenile Atlantic salmon,Salmo salar L., by placing groups of six individuals of known dominance rank sequentially into an experimental arena with feeding sites of varying quality. Dominants had an advantage over subordinates in the percentage of time spent in a good-quality feeding site and individual feeding rate. There was also a significant time of arrival effect: those individuals that arrived first in a habitat monopolized the resource. The two effects were of approximately equal strength, so that late-arriving dominant fish had similar success as prior resident subordinates. These results indicate that both dominance and prior residence are important in the feeding behaviour of juvenile Atlantic salmon, and that the two factors can have independent and additive effects.Copyright 2003 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.   相似文献

Survival, competition, growth and reproductive success in fishes are highly dependent on food intake, food availability and feeding behavior and are all influenced by a complex set of metabolic and neuroendocrine mechanisms. Overexpression of growth hormone (GH) in transgenic fish can result in greatly enhanced growth rates, feed conversion, feeding motivation and food intake. The objectives of this study were to compare seasonal feeding behavior of non-transgenic wild-type (NT) and GH-transgenic (T) coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), and to examine the effects of intraperitoneal injections of the appetite-regulating peptides cholecystokinin (CCK-8), bombesin (BBS), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) on feeding behavior. T salmon fed consistently across all seasons, whereas NT dramatically reduced their food intake in winter, indicating the seasonal regulation of appetite can be altered by overexpression of GH in T fish. Intraperitoneal injections of CCK-8 and BBS caused a significant and rapid decrease in food intake for both genotypes. Treatment with either GLP-1 or α-MSH resulted in a significant suppression of food intake for NT but had no effect in T coho salmon. The differential response of T and NT fish to α-MSH is consistent with the melanocortin-4 receptor system being a significant pathway by which GH acts to stimulate appetite. Taken together, these results suggest that chronically increased levels of GH alter feeding regulatory pathways to different extents for individual peptides, and that altered feeding behavior in transgenic coho salmon may arise, in part, from changes in sensitivity to peripheral appetite-regulating signals.  相似文献

Food resource partitioning between similar‐sized, sympatric Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis was examined as a possible mechanism enabling their coexistence in a stream (Allaire) of the Sainte‐Marguerite River ecosystem, Quebec, Canada. Fish stomach contents and invertebrate drift were collected concurrently during three diel cycles in August to September 1996. The food and feeding habits of an allopatric brook trout population in a nearby stream (Epinette) were studied for comparison. The diel feeding rhythms of the two coexisting fish species were similar. The composition of their diet, however, showed significant differences. Atlantic salmon predominantly (60–90%) fed on aquatic insects, mainly Ephemeroptera (35–60% of the diet). The brook trout mostly (50–80%) fed upon the allochthonous terrestrial insects (mainly adults of Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera) which comprised 5–40% of the stream drift. The allopatric brook trout fed opportunistically on the more abundant aquatic insects and terrestrial insects rarely formed 25% of its diet. The allopatric trout fed nearly twice as much as the sympatric brook trout during a day. The results suggest that the differences in feeding by brook trout in the two streams (with and without Atlantic salmon) are the result of inter‐specific interaction with Atlantic salmon and are not related to the differences in food availability between the two streams. Food resource partitioning between Atlantic salmon and brook trout may be viewed as an adaptive response resulting in a greater exploitation of available resources and coexistence.  相似文献

Until July, post-smolt salmon Salmo salar ( n =337; 129–375 mm L T, mean 225 mm) in the Bothnian Sea relied largely on surface fauna (mainly terrestrial insects). From August onwards, fish was the principal food type. The smallest piscivorous post-smolts were <200 mm, but the main shift to piscivory occurred at sizes of 240–320 mm. Piscivory was promoted by a large smolt size. Almost all one-sea-winter (1-SW) salmon ( n =316; 278–524 mm, mean 397 mm) were piscivorous. Over 70% of the post-smolt and 96% of the 1-SW salmon with identifiable fish species in their stomachs had preyed on herring Clupea harengus. Other fish prey included the ten-spined Pungitius pungitius and three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteusaculeatus but no sprats Sprattus sprattus. The results support earlier observations of a close relationship between recruitment of herring and production of salmon in the Bothnian Sea, and of the crucial role of smolt size in determining the ability of feeding salmon for utilizing the food resources of the area.  相似文献

Variations in distributions and behaviours of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in allopatry (homogeneous) and in sympatry with brown trout Salmo trutta (mixed) were observed before, during and after 2 day periods of dewatering in a large glass-sided indoor stream at densities typical of Scottish upland streams. Brown trout utilized pools more than Atlantic salmon at normal flows and in both species the majority of fishes moved into pools during dewatering. There was no significant effect of brown trout, which was the more dominant species, on the overall ability of Atlantic salmon to use pool habitat as a refuge during dewatering. Within mixed and homogeneous groups, average feeding levels decreased during dewatering. The highest ranking fish, which was always a brown trout in mixed groups, predominantly monopolized the pool and other individuals in pools adopted a more cryptic, stationary behaviour. Dewatering effectively increased local population density with the result that dominance status became much more important in maintaining food intake, and polarization between the top ranking fish and others increased. During the first day of dewatering, there was extreme behavioural polarization such that the dominant fish exhibited most aggression and least feeding within the group. Among dominant fish on the second day of dewatering, aggression had largely abated and feeding had returned to pretreatment levels despite the reduced average feeding within the group. The main difference between mixed and homogeneous groups was in the behaviour of the most dominant Atlantic salmon, which was near-despotic in allopatry and subordinate to brown trout in sympatry.  相似文献

Locomotor activity studies in the laboratory under artificial light cycles co-ordinated with times of sunrise and sunset demonstrated that ten of sixteen Atlantic salmon parr were nocturnal, with an approximately twenty-four hour periodicity. The remaining six fish exhibited diurnal activity patterns or activity mainly after times of light change. Two fish immediately shifted their activity patterns to co-ordinate with a 6-hr shifted light cycle. Six fish retained no activity patterns in constant light, and only two of eleven fish had weak activity patterns in constant darkness. Results suggest that Atlantic salmon parr are dependent on a light-dark cycle for timing their activity rhythms. Three of twelve salmon in an imposed magnetic field four times the strength of the horizontal vector of the ambient field, increased their activity level and changed activity patterns in the increased field. The remaining fish showed no distinct change in locomotor activity.  相似文献

1. Temperature governs most physiological processes in animals. Ectotherms behaviourally thermoregulate by selecting habitats with temperatures regulating their body temperature for optimal physiological functioning. However, ectotherms can experience temperature extremes forcing the organisms to seek temperature refuge. 2. Fish actively avoid potentially lethal temperatures by moving to cool-water sites created by inflowing tributaries and groundwater seeps. Juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) of different age classes exhibit different behavioural responses to elevated temperatures (>23 °C). Yearling (1+) and 2-year-old (2+) Atlantic salmon often cease feeding, abandon territorial behaviour and swim continuously in aggregations in cool-water sites; whereas young-of-the-year (0+) fish continue defending territories and foraging. 3. This study determined whether the behavioural shift in older individuals (2+) occurred when basal metabolic rate, driven by increasing water temperature, reached the maximum metabolic rate such that anaerobic pathways were recruited to provide energy to support vital processes. Behaviour (feeding and stress responses), oxygen consumption, muscle lactate and glycogen, and circulating blood lactate and glucose concentrations were measured in wild 0+ and 2+ Atlantic salmon acclimated to water temperatures between 16 and 28 °C. 4. Results indicate that oxygen consumption of the 2+ fish increased with temperature and reached a plateau at 24 °C, a temperature that corresponded to cessation of feeding and a significant increase in muscle and blood lactate levels. By contrast, oxygen consumption in 0+ fish did not reach a plateau, feeding continued and muscle lactate did not increase, even at the highest temperatures tested (28 °C). 5. To conclude, the experiment demonstrated that the 0+ and 2+ fish had different physiological responses to the elevated water temperatures. The results suggest that wild 2+ Atlantic salmon employ behavioural responses (e.g. movement to cool-water sites) at elevated temperatures in an effort to mitigate physiological imbalances associated with an inability to support basal metabolism through aerobic metabolic processes.  相似文献

The movements of adult Atlantic salmon were recorded as they approached, entered and ascended the pool-and-orifice fish ladder at Pitlochry Dam, Scotland. Thirty-nine returning salmon were captured in the River Tummel by rod-and-line angling, radio-tagged and released near where they were caught. The subsequent movements of each fish were then monitored. An electronic fish counter collected additional data on movements of untagged fish past a fixed point in the ladder. Of the 39 fish that were radio-tagged, 29 individuals were recorded approaching and ascended the ladder. The remaining fish either did not approach the dam (three fish), approached the dam after detailed tracking had ended (two fish), were recaptured by anglers (three fish), or the radio tags failed (two fish). Salmon released earlier in the year delayed longer before first approaching the dam. Delays between first approaching the dam and ascent of the ladder were greater for fish that approached the dam earlier. The majority of salmon visited the ladder entrance more than once (maximum 10 visits) before ascending. Having entered, all but four salmon ascended the fish ladder successfully on their first attempt. The four individuals that failed to do so succeeded on their second attempt. The rate at which salmon ascended the ladder was related directly to temperature. The shortest ascent time of a radio-tagged salmon was 5·25 h. Movements of eight of 11 tagged fish through the ladder ceased with the onset of darkness but continued on the following morning. No radio-tagged fish entered the ladder at temperatures below 9) C. Similarly, few untagged fish were recorded ascending the ladder by the electronic fish counter at water temperatures below 8·5) C. Records from the fish counter indicated that 92% of upstream movements were made during daylight.  相似文献

The diet and foraging microhabitat of white-spotted charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis, were compared between mountain stream reaches where it occurs with (sympatric) and without (allopatric) masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou masou, a potential competitor, to examine the evidence for interspecific competition between these fish, which commonly co-occur in Japanese mountain streams. In three streams examined, the similarity between the diets of allopatric charr and salmon was much greater than that between the diets of sympatric charr and salmon. Both allopatric charr and sympatric salmon intensively utilized terrestrial invertebrates among stream drifts (52%–65% of the diet), whereas this prey category made up only an intermediate portion of sympatric charr diets (11%–29%). Examination of available prey composition in stream drifts showed that the consumption of terrestrial invertebrates by allopatric charr and sympatric salmon was approximately twice as much as that by sympatric charr. The presence of salmon, a potential competitor, may alter the diet of charr in the sympatric reaches. Charr holding focal points closer to the streambed were considered less efficient than sympatric salmon in their utilization of terrestrial invertebrates drifting primarily on the stream surface, although the foraging microhabitat of the charr was not influenced by the salmon. The mechanisms responsible for the dietary divergence between sympatric charr and salmon are probably the consequence of scramble competition over terrestrial invertebrates drifting on the stream surface. Hepatocytes in primary culture from fed and 2 month fasted Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were exposed to physiological doses of either cortisol, salmon growth hormone (GH), salmon insulin‐like growth factor‐I (IGF‐I) or a combination of salmon GH and salmon IGF‐I. Fasting significantly lowered medium glucose levels compared to the fed fish, but had no significant effects on hepatocyte glycogen content or on the activities of enzymes involved in the intermediary metabolism. Cortisol treatment had no effect on hepatocyte glycogen content or on the enzyme activities investigated, but resulted in a significant increase in medium glucose concentration in hepatocytes isolated from fasted, but not fed fish. GH and IGF‐I treatments, both singly and in combination, significantly increased the glycogen content of hepatocytes isolated from fed fish, with less pronounced effects on hepatocytes isolated from fasted fish. The combination of GH and IGF‐I significantly increased lactate dehydrogenase activity regardless of the feeding state and significantly reduced the phosphenolpyruvate carboxykinase activity and medium glucose concentration in hepatocytes isolated from fed fish. Further, GH and IGF‐I significantly increased the activities of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in hepatocytes isolated from fasted fish, but not fed fish. There were no effects of GH, IGF‐I, or their combination, on glucose 6‐phosphate dehydrogenase or 3‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA dehydrogenase activities. The results demonstrated that nutritional status of the animal modulates hepatocyte responsiveness to metabolic hormones, and suggested a role for GH and IGF‐I in hepatic glycogen conservation.  相似文献

Early marine trophic interactions of wild and hatchery chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) were examined as a potential cause for the decline in harvests of adult wild chum salmon in Taku Inlet, Southeast Alaska. In 2004 and 2005, outmigrating juvenile chum salmon were sampled in nearshore habitats of the inlet (spring) and in epipelagic habitat at Icy Strait (summer) as they approached the Gulf of Alaska. Fish were frozen for energy density determination or preserved for diet analyses, and hatchery stocks were identified from the presence of thermal marks on otoliths. We compared feeding intensity, diets, energy density, and size relationships of wild and hatchery stocks (n = 3123) across locations and weeks. Only hatchery fish feeding intensity was negatively correlated with fish abundance. In both years, hatchery chum salmon were initially larger and had greater energy density than wild fish, but lost condition in early weeks after release as they adapted to feeding on wild prey assemblages. Diets differed between the stocks at all inlet locations, but did not differ for hatchery salmon between littoral and neritic habitats in the outer inlet, where the stocks overlapped most. Both diets and energy density converged by late June. Therefore, if density-dependent interactions affect wild chum salmon, these effects must be very rapid because survivors in Icy Strait showed few differences. Our study also demonstrates that hatchery release strategies used near Taku Inlet successfully promote early spatial segregation and prey partitioning, which reduce the probability of competition between wild and hatchery chum salmon stocks.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the digestibility, growth and slaughter quality in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) fed a novel type of moist feed. The moist feed was prepared from alkaline preserved (pH 11.2) herring (Clupea harengus) filleting by-products, mixed with a crude binder based on seaweed before the feed was shaped in a pelleting process and the final structure was set immersing the pellets in an acidic bath. The feeding experiment was carried out with seawater-adapted salmon with an average initial weight of 1.7 kg. The moist feed and a control feed were fed to three groups of salmon with 190 fish per group. The coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility of fat, protein and energy in fish fed the moist feed was 0.96, 0.81 and 0.87, respectively. The weight gain for fish fed moist feed was significantly higher compared to salmon fed commercially extruded control feed. Carcass quality data showed that fish fed the moist feed had significantly higher dressing out percentage and less visceral fat compared to fish fed the control feed. It is concluded that alkaline preserved fish by-products can be efficiently utilized in a novel moist feed technology, yielding good growth and digestibility in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Growth rate has been established as a key parameter influencing foraging decisions involving the risk of predation. Through genetic manipulation, transgenic salmon bred to contain and transmit a growth hormone transgene are able to achieve growth rates significantly greater than those of unmanipulated salmon. Using such growth-enhanced transgenic Atlantic salmon, we directly tested the hypothesis that relative growth rates should be correlated with willingness to risk exposure to a predator. We used size-matched transgenic and control salmon in two experiments where these fish could either feed in safety, or in the presence of the predator. The first experiment constrained the predator behind a Plexiglas partition (no risk of mortality), the second required the fish to feed in the same compartment as the predator (a finite risk of mortality). During these experiments, transgenic salmon had rates of consumption that were approximately five times that of the control fish and rates of movement approximately double that of controls. Transgenic salmon also spent significantly more time feeding in the presence of the predator, and consumed absolutely more food at that location. When there was a real risk of mortality, control fish almost completely avoided the dangerous location. Transgenic fish continued to feed at this location, but at a reduced level. These data demonstrate that the growth enhancement associated with the transgenic manipulation increases the level of risk these fish are willing to incur while foraging. If the genetic manipulation necessary to increase growth rates is achievable through evolutionary change, these experiments suggest that growth rates of Atlantic salmon may be optimized by the risk of predation.
