New non-invasive technologies allow direct measurement of heart rates (and thus, developmental rates) of embryos. We applied these methods to a diverse array of oviparous reptiles (24 species of lizards, 18 snakes, 11 turtles, 1 crocodilian), to identify general influences on cardiac rates during embryogenesis. Heart rates increased with ambient temperature in all lineages, but (at the same temperature) were faster in lizards and turtles than in snakes and crocodilians. We analysed these data within a phylogenetic framework. Embryonic heart rates were faster in species with smaller adult sizes, smaller egg sizes, and shorter incubation periods. Phylogenetic changes in heart rates were negatively correlated with concurrent changes in adult body mass and residual incubation period among the lizards, snakes (especially within pythons) and crocodilians. The total number of embryonic heart beats between oviposition and hatching was lower in squamates than in turtles or the crocodilian. Within squamates, embryonic iguanians and gekkonids required more heartbeats to complete development than did embryos of the other squamate families that we tested. These differences plausibly reflect phylogenetic divergence in the proportion of embryogenesis completed before versus after laying.  相似文献

Larval Pacific anchovy Engraulis japonicus were sampled from coastal waters off the central west coast of Korea from June to November 1996. Using otolith microstructure analysis (daily growth increments), three cohorts (spring, early summer and late summer) were distinguished based on backcalculated spawning dates. Growth rates differed between cohorts, with higher growth rates for late-summer cohorts than either the spring or early-summer cohorts. Growth rate was positively related to surface water temperature, with an optimum temperature range of between 20 and 26° C occurring during the late summer (late July through to mid-September). The study highlights that early growth rates of Pacific anchovy are dependent on ecosystem (particularly water temperature) attributes during early life.  相似文献

Mean heart rate (MHR) was determined during incubation and in hatchlings of 14 altricial avian species to investigate (1) if there is a common developmental pattern of heart rate in altricial embryos and (2) if heart rate changes during incubation are correlated with changes in embryonic growth rate. On the basis of normalized incubation MHR increased approximately linearly in 12 of 14 species from as early as 30-40% of incubation to that of pipped embryos. The MHR of hatchlings was equal to or higher than that of pipped embryos in seven species. Passerine embryos and hatchlings maintained higher MHR in comparison to parrots of similar egg mass, which may reflect phylogenetic differences in development. Embryonic MHR increased at a higher rate while embryonic growth rates were highest during the first 40% of incubation in tit, budgerigar and crow embryos than during subsequent development when relative growth rates decreased. MHR became independent of yolk-free wet mass at a smaller fraction of hatchling mass in budgerigar and crow than in the tit, suggesting that MHR is more likely to increase continuously after 40% of incubation in small altricial species than larger species.  相似文献

Examination of the simian virus 40 early mRNA's from infected AGMK or CV-1 cells showed that the ratio of large T- to small t-antigen mRNA's increased with an increased incubation temperature. In tsA58 mutant-infected cells, an increased incubation temperature resulted in the overproduction of early RNAs'; however, the ratio of the early mRNA's was the same, at any temperature, in both wild-type- and tsA58-infected cells. Thus, the thermally induced alteration in the early mRNA ratios was apparently not affected by the tsA mutation or by the overproduction of early RNA in tsA mutant-infected cells. Time course studies at various temperatures showed that, although the ratio of large T- to small t-antigen mRNA's increased with temperature, at any one temperature it was consistent from early to late times of infection. Furthermore, the ratio of the early mRNA's adjusted in temperature shift experiments. Thus, the ratio of the early mRNA's appeared to be intrinsic to the thermodynamic environment of the cell. The thermally induced alterations in the early mRNA's were reflected at the protein level by parallel changes in the ratio of large T- to small t-antigens. These data suggest a level of gene expression control which may function at the stage of splicing.  相似文献

The (minus L15) character from the Escherichia coli strain AM16.98 was transduced to an RNase-deficient strain in order to enable a reconstitution analysis. The following results were obtained. 1) The strain lacking L15 showed a 2-3-fold prolonged generation time and the 70 S ribosomes a reduced tendency toward dissociation. 2) Active particles could not be reconstituted unless L15 was added. Addition of L15 regained activity, even if L15 was added after the two-step procedure during a third incubation. However, a modification of the standard two-step reconstitution procedure (lowering NH4+ from 400 to 240 mM and the incubation temperature of the second step from 50 to 47 degrees C) yielded 100% active particles in the absence of L15. Active particles could be formed which even lacked L15, L16, and L30. Addition of either L15 or L16 accelerated the formation of active particles in the second step by a factor of five, and both proteins together by a factor of more than 20. 3) The activation energy of the rate-limiting step of the second incubation was surprisingly reduced for about 20 kcal/mol in the absence of L15, although the corresponding rates were two to five times slower. We conclude 1) that L15 and L16 are late assembly proteins which accelerate the formation of active particles during the late assembly but are neither needed for the early assembly nor essential for ribosomal functions; 2) that some routes of the late assembly (e.g. incorporation of L16) are changing their significance depending on the NH4+ concentration and the absence and presence of L15; and 3) that different reactions are rate limiting during the second step incubation in the presence and absence of L15, respectively, and that the corresponding reaction rates exhibit a different temperature dependence.  相似文献

The thermal environment during development influences many aspects of the phenotype of hatchling reptiles. We hypothesized that temperature should differentially affect early incubation stages, in which differentiation dominates over growth, and late incubation stages, characterized by high growth rates. To test this idea, we incubated eggs of wall lizard ( Podarcis muralis ) under three regimes with the same mean temperature (29 °C), one constant and two variable with opposite sequences: first cold (25 °C) and then hot (32 °C), and vice versa. Hatchlings incubated at high temperature during the initial period had shorter hindlimbs and tails than those incubated under the other two temperature regimes and shorter heads than those incubated initially at low temperature. Thus, temperature experienced by embryos during the early external incubation period produced similar phenotypic responses compared to those reported in previous studies for the same constant temperature applied over the whole incubation period. Because female wall lizards select lower body temperatures during pregnancy, an increase of intrauterine retention would extend the time of exposure of developing embryos to suitable temperatures. Diminution of body temperature during pregnancy is contrary to the expected pattern under the hypothesis that egg retention has evolved to accelerate development, as proposed by the cold-climate model for evolution of viviparity in squamates, and the results of the present study support the alternative hypothesis of developmental optimization as a special case of the broader maternal manipulation view.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 441–447.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is always maintained at ambient levels by ventilation in commercial egg incubators. However, elevated CO2 levels during the early and late periods have been reported to improve the quality of chicks and shorten the hatch window. This study investigated the effect of precise CO2 supplementation during the early and late periods of incubation on embryo growth and incubation performance by developing and using a CO2 supplementation system to increase the CO2 level in an experimental egg incubator. The CO2 level was maintained at 1% in the early period (from the beginning to the 10th day of incubation, E0E10) and in the late period (from internal pipping (IP) to the 21st day of incubation (E21), IP–E21) in an incubator for the treatment group, whereas the CO2 level was maintained at the ambient level in the other incubators for the control group. A comparative assessment of embryonic development, hatching characteristics, and hormone and nutrient levels was conducted for each trial. The experiment comprised three trials, with 300 Jing Hong No. 1 breeding eggs in each incubator. The elevated CO2 treatment significantly shortened the chick hatching time (H0) by 4 h (P < 0.05) and the hatch window by 3 h (P < 0.05) without affecting hatchability, chick weight at 1 d of age, brooding period, or quality score. At external pipping (EP), the heart weight, intestinal weight, relative intestinal weight, and relative heart weight in the treatment group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). In addition, the embryonic intestine, relative intestine, and relative heart weights of the newly hatched chicks in the treatment group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05) at H0. The treatment significantly increased the concentration of corticosterone in the embryonic plasma during the period from IP to EP (P < 0.05), promoted the secretion of triiodothyronine and tetraiodothyronine (P < 0.05), and increased the glycogen content of the embryonic liver on E21 (P < 0.05). This result indicates that elevated CO2 (1%) during the early and late periods of incubation accelerated embryonic organ development and shortened the chick hatching time and hatch window without affecting hatchability or hatchling quality, which can be explained by the synergistic functions of the secretion of plasma corticosterone and thyroid hormones and the accumulation of liver glycogen between the early and late periods of incubation.  相似文献

The breeding season of the grey starling Sturnus cineraceus is divided into two periods: the early and late breeding season. The birds that breed in each season are referred to as early and late breeders, respectively. In this study, the late breeders mainly consisted of new immigrants that did not breed in the early season. This suggested that these new immigrants were probably floaters in the early breeding season. Because intraspecific brood parasitism occurred frequently, it is possible that the parasites were floaters without nesting boxes. To check for the presence of floaters, two field experiments were conducted and floaters were captured with traps. With additional nesting boxes provided during the breeding season, all new boxes were quickly occupied by floaters from the period of incubation to hatching in the early breeding season, but were not occupied by floaters during the egg laying period of the late breeding season. The addition of boxes before the start of the breeding season significantly decreased the parasitic rate and number of parasitic eggs per nest. There was a positive correlation between the relative occupancy of nesting boxes and the parasitic rate. The removal of boxes again increased the parasitic rate. As for the capture of floaters with traps, the number of trapped birds per day was also related to the relative occupancy of nesting boxes. The floaters trapped between incubation and nesting periods of early breeders became the late breeders. Judging from these results, many floaters were present from the incubation to hatching periods of early breeders, and were probably intraspecific brood parasites.  相似文献

In many bird species, eggs laid late in the laying period hatch after a shorter incubation period than early-laid eggs. However, the mechanisms that explain these seasonal declines in incubation periods among clutches remain poorly understood. In this study we investigated the plasticity of brood patch development during incubation in yellow-eyed penguins Megadyptes antipodes and established whether differences exist in brood patch formation among early, mean and late-breeding penguins. We also examined whether brood patch development was influenced by sex and age of birds. We then placed an artificial egg in nests a few days prior to egg laying to investigate whether the presence of an egg influences brood patch development and whether an advanced brood patch development at the time of egg laying causes declines in incubation periods. Initial brood patch width on the day the first egg was laid was dependent on sex and age, while the development of brood patch width after first egg laying was slower in early-laying birds than in mean- and late-laying birds. Initial brood patch temperature as well as temperature throughout incubation was largely dependent upon sex, whereby males had higher brood patch surface temperatures than females. Placement of an artificial egg in nests stimulated successfully brood patch development in manipulated birds, so that by the time they laid their own first egg, their brood patches were wider and had higher temperatures than those of control birds. Moreover, incubation periods of first eggs from manipulated nests were significantly shorter (43.5 days) than were those from control nests (47.3 days). Thus, variation in brood patch development and related differences in incubation temperature during early incubation could contribute to seasonal declines in incubation periods.  相似文献

We compared the developmental patterns of mean heart rate in Larus crassirostris and L. schistisagus embryos and chicks with other avian species of different hatchling developmental modes. We proposed that, since mean heart rate is inversely related to fresh egg mass in all birds, larger species reached a higher fraction of their hatchling mean heart rate by the end of the early phase of incubation and that heart rate contributions to supplying the increasing metabolic demands during mid and late incubation phases were less important than in smaller avian species. Mean heart rate was essentially independent of age throughout the mid-incubation phase (33% of normalised incubation until pipping), but increased with time during early (L. schistisagus only investigated) and late-incubation phases in both species. The O2 pulse of L. schistisagus embryos and chicks increased linearly with yolk-free body mass (log-log) after the early-phase of incubation until shortly before pipping, but was independent of body mass in the periods before and after. We conclude that a high heart rate in this first period is probably more important for increasing the circulation of nutrients to the embryo at a stage when extra-embryonic circulation to the yolk sac is limited by the size of the growing area vaculosa. Furthermore, large increases in mean heart rate during the late-incubation phase are probably important for increasing the cardiac output to hatching levels with onset of endothermy. However, mean heart rate is stable over the mid-incubation while O2 pulse increases, suggesting that increases in stroke volume and other circulatory adjustments may be entirely responsible for the largest increases in O2 transport during incubation of large avian species. This study investigated the seasonal change in xylem growth of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora). Wood cores were sampled at 2-week intervals from April to November in 2012 using the microcoring method. Daily increment rates of tracheid number and tree-ring width were compared with seasonal changes in daily mean temperature and photoperiod. Xylem growth started in early to late May and stopped in late October to early November. The maximum daily increment rates of tracheid number and tree-ring width were in early July. The 95 % confidence intervals of the timing of the maximum daily increment rates included the summer solstice (23 June) with the longest photoperiod, but not the warmest day (30 July). The maximum daily increment rate of xylem growth is thought to be controlled by the photoperiod rather than by temperature. The daily mean temperature exceeded 20 °C after the summer solstice, indicating that temperature is not a limiting factor for xylem growth. This study suggests that the timing of maximum daily increment rates of xylem growth of P. densiflora is controlled by the photoperiod.  相似文献

Summary The heart rates of quiescent land snailsHelix lucorum andH. aspersa were recorded by impedance pneumography over several days. When snails acclimated to warm, humid, long days were transferred in late autumn to cool, dry, short days, in order to permit hibernation inverse rotational acclimation occurred, so that heart rates at low temperatures were lowered. However, temperature dependence increased so that heart rates at higher temperatures showed less difference. When hibernatingH. lucorum were brought into warm conditions and allowed to emerge from hibernation, their heart rates at low temperatures were raised. WarmacclimatedH. lucorum showed lower rates and higher temperature dependence before hibernation than after emergence: this may assist their entry into hibernation.H. lucorum showed a higher temperature dependence thanH. aspersa whether warm- or cold-acclimated: this may reflect the lower summer temperatures experienced by this population ofH. lucorum and the obligate nature of their winter dormancy.  相似文献

Twelve healthy male subjects each undertook two bouts of moderate exercise (70% VO2max for 30 minutes) in the morning (08:00) and late afternoon (18:00) at least 4 days apart. Measurements were made of heart rate, core (rectal) temperature, sternum skin temperature, and forearm skin blood flow during baseline conditions, during the bout of exercise, and throughout a 30-minute recovery period. Comparisons were made of the changes of heart rate, temperature, and skin blood flow produced by the exercise at the two times of day. Student t tests indicated that baseline values for core temperature (37.15 degrees C +/- 0.06 degrees C vs. 36.77 degrees C +/- 0.06 degrees C) and sternum temperature (33.60 degrees C +/- 0.29 degrees C vs. 32.70 degrees C + 0.38 degrees C) were significantly (p < .05) higher in the late afternoon than the early morning. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the increases in core and sternum temperatures during exercise were significantly less (p = .0039 and .0421, respectively) during the afternoon bout of exercise compared with the morning, even though the work loads, as determined by changes in heart rate, were not significantly different (p = .798) at the two times of testing. There were also tendencies for resting forearm skin blood flow to be higher in the afternoon than in the morning and for exercise to produce a more rapid rise in this variable in the afternoon. The possible mechanisms producing these responses to exercise are discussed in terms of those that are responsible for the normal circadian rhythm of core temperature. It is concluded that the body's ability to remove a heat load is less in the early morning, when the circadian system is in a "heat gain" mode, than in the late afternoon, when heat gain and "heat loss" modes are balanced more evenly.  相似文献

In some species of ectotherms, temperature has little or no effect on the amount of energy expended during embryonic development. This phenomenon can result from either of two mechanisms: (1) a shorter incubation period at higher temperatures, which offsets the expected increase in metabolic rate, or (2) a compensatory decrease in the rate at which embryos expend energy for maintenance. To distinguish the relative importance of these two mechanisms, we quantified the acute and chronic effects of temperature on embryonic metabolism in the eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus). First, we measured metabolic rates of individual embryos at 27 degrees, 31 degrees, and 34 degrees C. Second, we examined the capacity for thermal acclimation by measuring the metabolic rates of embryos at 30 degrees C, after a period of incubation at either 28 degrees or 32 degrees C. As with adult reptiles, the metabolic rates of embryos increased with an acute increase in temperature; the Q(10) of metabolic rate from 27 degrees to 34 degrees C was 2.1 (+/-0.2). No evidence of thermal acclimation was observed either early or late in development. In S. undulatus, a shorter incubation period at higher temperatures appears to play the primary role in canalizing the energy budget of an embryo, but a reduction in the cost of growth could play a secondary role.  相似文献

In chick (Gallus gallus domesticus) embryos, instantaneous heart rate begins to fluctuate with the appearance of rapid, transient decelerations at around the end of the second week of incubation. Previously, it was shown that instantaneous heart rate decelerations were eliminated by administration of atropine and concurrently heart rate baseline was elevated in late embryos. Because the previous study lacked statistical treatment and there has been recent controversy over the development of tonic vagal control of the heart, we reexamine the hypothesis that transient decelerations of instantaneous heart rate are mediated by vagus nerve and the vagal tone begins to appear at around the end of the second week of incubation. Atropine administration tests were conducted for sixty-seven 11- to 14-day-old and 18-day-old embryos in total. Heart rate decelerations appeared sporadically in three out of ten 12-day-old embryos, but the difference of mode heart rate before and after administration of atropine was not significant. Seven out of nine 13-day-old embryos and all nine 14-day-old embryos showed heart rate decelerations and the difference of mode heart rate before and after atropine administration was significant. In late (18-day-old) embryos, magnitude and frequency of instantaneous heart rate decelerations further increased with additional appearance of transient, irregular accelerations. Administration of varying doses of atropine completely eliminated the heart rate decelerations and elevated the heart rate baseline more markedly than in young embryos, indicating the maturation of vagal tone late in incubation.  相似文献

The kinetic properties of ATP hydrolysis and synthesis by FoF1-ATPase of heart mitochondria were evaluated during the acute phase of T. cruzi infection in rats. Mitochondria and submitochondrial particles were isolated 7 days (early stage) and 25 days (late stage) following infection of rats with 2 × 105 trypomastigote forms of the Y strain of T. cruzi. The kinetic properties for ATP hydrolysis were altered for the early but not the late stage, showing a changed pH profile, increased K0.5 values, and a decreased total Vmax. The Arrhenius' plot for membrane-associated enzyme showed a higher transition temperature with a lower value for the activation energy in body temperature. For the Triton X-100 - solubilized enzyme, the plot was similar to the control. A decrease in the efficiency of ADP phosphorylation by mitochondria, measured by the firefly-luciferase luminescence, was observed only during the late stage and appeared to be correlated with a decrease in the affinity of the FoF1-ATPase for ADP. It is proposed that in the early stage, during the acute phase of T. cruzi infection in rats, heart FoF1-ATPase undergoes a membrane-dependent conformational change in order to maintain the phosphorylation potential of mitochondria, which would compensate for the uncoupling of mitochondrial function. Also, during both the early and late stages, the enzyme seems to be under the regulation of the endogenous inhibitor protein for the preservation of cellular ATP levels.  相似文献

The adrenergic fibres can be demonstrated if the optimal time and temperature are maintained. The cholinergic fibres were demonstrated at pH 5.2, incubation period l4h and temperature 37 degrees C. To ascertain the cholinesterase activity in tongue, heart, lung(birds, mammals and reptiles), gizzard and proventriculus (birds) and penis (rat and embryo of squirrel), pH 4.9, 16h incubation and temperature 37 degrees C, were quite suitable. It was possible to demonstrate the intrinsic innervation in tongue, lung, heart (mammals, birds and reptiles), gizzard and proventriculus (birds) and penis (rat and embryo of squirrel), at pH 5.2, 20h incubation and temperature 40 degrees C.  相似文献

Effect of surplus glucose on physiological and biochemical parameters of leaves of different age was investigated in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L., subsp. saccharifera) plants in the stages of vegetative growth (SVG). Early and late SVG were differentiated by the ratio between the weights of roots and aboveground organs (0.10 and 0.35, respectively). The excess of Glu was produced by incubation of the disks excised from detached leaves in water or 0.1 M Glu at radiant flux density of 250 μmol/(m2 s) with the light regime pattern described as night/day/night/light (8/16/8/3 h). In all the leaf disks incubated in water and glucose solution, the content of Glu and other soluble carbohydrates considerably increased as compared with their content in the leaves they were taken from. After disk incubation in water and glucose solution, the content of chlorophyll (a + b) rose as compared with its level in respective leaves in early SVG; in late SVG, it declined. In early SVG, the rate of the O2 photosynthetic evolution (Ph) in the ageing leaves under saturating concentration of NaHCO3 after incubation in water and Glu solution declined more considerably than in young leaves. In late SVG, incubation of leaf disks in water and Glu solution weakly affected P n. The rate of O2 dark consumption in the leaf disks of all the types of treatment increased after incubation in water and especially in Glu solution. Activity of soluble carbonic anhydrase (sCA) in the extracts from young leaves in early SVG after their incubation in water and Glu solution was essentially the same, but after the incubation of ageing leaves in Glu solution, it reliably decreased. In late SVG, sCA activity sharply decreased after incubation in water and Glu solution irrespective of the leaf age. In late SVG, activity of Rubisco in the young leaves did not change after their incubation in water but decreased after incubation of the leaves of the three ages in Glu solution. In early SVG, nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching (NPQ) in the young intact leaf was lower than in the ageing leaf, and after leaf incubation in water and Glu solution, it rose. In late SVG, the value of NPQ was greater than in early SVG and, in contrast to the leaves of early SVG, it declined after leaf incubation; in water, this decline was more pronounced than in the Glu solution. In early SVG, efficient quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) was much greater than in late SVG and it declined in the leaves incubated with Glu. It was concluded that surplus Glu can maintain biosynthetic processes in the young leaves of young sugar beet plants (trophic function). A decline in the level of chlorophyll and the activities of sCA and Rubisco in the course of leaf development and senescence is considered as a symptom of the suppression of biosynthesis of proteins of chlorophyll-protein complexes and the enzymes (Rubisco and sCA).  相似文献

Incubation time of Erysiphe graminis f.sp. hordei varied seasonally, but between early May and late September it was always between 5 and 8 days. This is approximately the time of year when the 30-year weekly mean air temperature exceeds 10oC. Amount of infection during summer was decreased by hot, dry weather. In winter, incubation times were more variable and long incubation times were usually associated with few infections. Variation in incubation time during the summer is unlikely to be of practical importance in determining the rate of epidemic development.  相似文献

In order to understand the impact of habitat changes on ecosystem processes caused by increased populations of elephants, elephant dung decomposition was studied in semi-arid Botswana. Dung decomposition rates were studied with and without the presence of arthropods, using pairs of exposed dung and dung enclosed in nylon-mesh bags, respectively. Dung decomposition rates were lower in the absence of arthropods. The rates in the late wet season were higher in the scrubland than in the woodland. In the early dry season, immediately after the wet season, the rates were higher in the woodland than in the scrubland. The difference in decomposition rates between habitats was attributed to microclimatic conditions created by vegetation cover. With regard to fungal succession, Cladosporium cladosporioides and Eurotium brefeldianum occurred only in the late stages of dung decomposition whereas Talaromyces helicus, Cercophora coprophila and Sporormiella minima occurred in all the stages. Although there was no significant difference in Shannon–Weiner fungal species diversity index between habitats, seasons, dung ages and laboratory incubation periods, there were significant differences in fungal community composition between these parameters. Species richness was higher in the late wet season than in the early dry season, indicating the importance of moist conditions for a large diversity of fungal species.  相似文献
