The ability to discriminate moving sounds sources with different dynamic properties was studied in humans. Mismatch negativity was studied in an experiment on dichotic stimulation, with deviant stimuli simulating the instantaneous movement of the auditory image to the right or left of the head midline in the horizontal plane. Standard stimuli simulated continuous movement of the sound source to the right or to the left to the same angular distances. It was also established that both deviant stimuli caused mismatch negativity, its parameters being independent on the direction of sound movement. Psychophysical testing of the same group of subjects showed that discrimination between the stimuli was below the psychophysical threshold. The results obtained are discussed from the point of view of current theories of moving sound localization. The correlation between the objective and subjective levels of discrimination of moving auditory images are discussed.  相似文献

The spatial resolution of the human auditory system was studied under conditions, where the location of the sound source was changed according to different temporal patterns of interaural time delay. Two experimental procedures were run in the same group of subjects: a psychophysical procedure (the transformed staircase method) and an electrophysiological one (which requires recording of mismatch negativity, the auditory evoked response component). It was established that (1) the value of the mismatch negativity reflected the degree of spatial deviation of the sound source; (2) the mismatch negativity was elicited even at minimum (20μs) interaural time delays under both temporal patterns (abrupt azimuth change and gradual sound movement at different velocities); (3) an abrupt change of the sound source azimuth resulted in a greater mismatch negativity than gradual sound movement did if the interaural time delay exceeded 40 μs; (4) the discrimination threshold values of the interaural delay obtained in the psychophysical procedure were greater than the minimum interaural delays that elicited mismatch negativity, with the exception of the expert listeners, who exhibited no significant difference.  相似文献

Images of artificial and natural scenes typically contain many 'specularities' generated by mirror-like reflection from glossy surfaces. Until fairly recently computational models of visual processes have tended to regard specularities as obscuring underlying scene structure. Mathematical modelling shows that, on the contrary, they are rich in local geometric information. Recent psychophysical findings support the notion that the brain can apply that information. Our results concern the inference of 3D structure from 2D shaded images of glossy surfaces. Stereoscopically viewed highlights or 'specularities' are found to serve as cues for 3D local surface-geometry.  相似文献

Experiments by S. S. Stevens (Stevens, 1957, and Stevens and Galanter, 1957) and his collaborators indicate that the so-called logarithmic Weber-Fechner Law is not realized in most human perceptions. Instead, a power law seems to emerge over a large number of sensory continua. This is important because for a long time the logarithmic law was looked upon as almost the only possible psychophysical law. The logarithmic law appeared desirable intuitively because it made the sensation depend on the relative values of the stimuli and not on their absolute values. This is, of course, useful for evolutionary reasons. Some other reasons are also discussed by Stevens (1961).  相似文献

Two distinct patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) segregation were found in different mouse-rat hybrid cell lines. On mouse-rat hybrid cell line, H2, retained complete sets of chromosomes and mtDNAs of both mouse and rat. Even after cultivation for about one year after cloning, the H2 cell population still retained both parental mtDNAs. However, when mtDNAs of H2 subclones were examined, it was found that some individual cells in the H2 cell population contained only mouse or only rat mtDNA, although they still retained complete sets of both kinds of parental chromosomes. This type of mtDNA segregation, named stochastic segregation, is bidirectional and may be caused by the repetition of random sharing of mouse and rat mtDNAs with daughter cells. This segregation occurred spontaneously during long-term cultivation. The second type of mtDNA segregation, named chromosome-dependent segregation, was found in the other mouse-rat hybrid cell lines that segregated either mouse or rat chromosomes. In these hybrid cells, chromosomes and mtDNA of the same species co-segregated. This second type of segregation is unidirectional. The types of mtDNA segregation appear to depend on the stability of the parental chromosomes in the hybrid cells. When both mouse and rat chromosomes retain stably, mtDNA shows stochastic segregation. On the contrary, when either species of chromosomes is segregated from the cells, mtDNA shows chromosome-dependent segregation.  相似文献

Frog gastrocnemius muscles stimulated isometrically in a saline bath at 20 degrees C were found to produce a single ringing sound event beginning just before the tension record began to rise. The sound event was substantially over by the time the isometric tension began to fall. Results from studies correlating the spatial pattern of the sound, the amplitude and frequency of the sound as a function of the muscle length, and the response of both the passive and active muscle to a transverse pluck were found to be consistent with the conclusion that the sounds in these muscles are caused primarily by transverse resonant vibrations. As the muscle develops force, its lack of cylindrical symmetry gives rise to lateral motions, which are most likely the initiators of the bending vibrations detected as sound.  相似文献

A complex segregation analysis of autism in 185 Utah families was carried out using the mixed model. The 209 affected individuals in these families represent nearly complete ascertainment of the autistic cases born in Utah between 1965 and 1984. The sibling recurrence risk for autism was 4.5% (95% confidence limits 2.8%-6.2%). Likelihoods were maximized for major-gene models, a polygenic model, a sibling-effect model, and a mixed model consisting of major-gene and shared-sibling effects. The analysis provided no evidence for major-locus inheritance of autism. Subdivision of the sample according to the probands' IQ levels showed that sibling recurrence risk did not vary consistently with IQ level. A segregation analysis of families in which the proband had an IQ less than 50 also failed to provide evidence for a major locus. However, because of the etiologic heterogeneity of this disorder, genetic analysis of other meaningful subsets of families could prove informative.  相似文献

Offset responses upon termination of a stimulus are crucial for perceptual grouping and gap detection. These gaps are key features of vocal communication, but an ionic mechanism capable of generating fast offsets from auditory stimuli has proven elusive. Offset firing arises in the brainstem superior paraolivary nucleus (SPN), which receives powerful inhibition during sound and converts this into precise action potential (AP) firing upon sound termination. Whole-cell patch recording in?vitro showed that offset firing was triggered by IPSPs rather than EPSPs. We show that AP firing can emerge from inhibition through integration of large IPSPs, driven by an extremely negative chloride reversal potential (E(Cl)), combined with a large hyperpolarization-activated nonspecific cationic current (I(H)), with a secondary contribution from a T-type calcium conductance (I(TCa)). On activation by the IPSP, I(H) potently accelerates the membrane time constant, so when the sound ceases, a rapid repolarization triggers multiple offset APs that match onset timing accuracy.  相似文献

1. Three pigeons (Columba livia) were trained to find hidden food in a sunken well (3.3 cm in diameter) at a constant place within an (160 cm x 160 cm) experimental box (Fig. 1). After learning the location, the animals were tested occasionally with the well and food absent. Landmarks in the experimental box might be transformed on such tests. 2. Changing the height or width of a nearby landmark had no systematic influence on the position of peak search. Translating a nearby landmark, however, led to a shift in peak search position. All three birds then searched most somewhere between the original goal location, as defined by the unmoved landmarks, and the goal location as defined by the shifted landmark. Within a limited range of landmark shift, the peak shift as a function of landmark shift is linear (Fig. 3). 3. To explain the data (Fig. 7), the pigeon records at the location of the goal the algebraic vectors from a number of landmarks to the goal. These vectors have both a direction and a distance component. When searching for the goal again in the experimental box, it computes independently for each landmark a navigation vector. This is arrived at by vector-adding the algebraic vector from the bird's current position to the landmark in question, supplied by perception, to the corresponding landmark-goal vector in its record. The pigeon moves in the direction and distance specified by a weighted average of the independently calculated navigation vectors. For positive vector weights, vector geometry guarantees that the bird would search somewhere between the original goal and the goal according to the shifted landmark. The extent to which it shifts toward the shifted goal reflects the vector weight given to the shifted landmark.  相似文献
