The growth rate of hydroponically grown wheat roots was reducedby mannitol solutions of various osmotic pressures. For example, following 24 h exposure to 0·96 MPa mannitol root elongationwas reduced from 1· mm h–1 to 0·1 mm h–1 Mature cell length was reduced from 290 µm in unstressedroots to 100 µm in 0·96 MPa mannitol. This indicatesa reduction in cell production rate from about 4 per h in theunstressed roots to 1 per h in the highest stress treatment. The growing zone extended over the apical 4·5 mm in unstressedroots but became shorter as growth ceased in the proximal regionsat higher levels of osmotic stress. The turgor pressure along the apical 5·0 mm of unstressedroots was between 0·5 and 0·6 MPa but declinedto 0·41 MPa over the next 50 mm. Following 24 h in 0·48(200 mol m–3) or 0·72 MPa (300 mol m) mannitol, turgor along the apical 50 mm was indistinguishable from thatof unstressed roots but turgor declined more steeply in theregion 5·10 mm from the tip. At the highest level ofstress (0·96 MPa or 400 mol m–3 mannitol) turgordeclined steeply within the apical 20 mm. The arrangement of wall microtubules (MTs) in Pisum sativumroots was viewed immunofluorescently using cryosectioning. Mostcells in the tip region of pea roots (0–2 mm from tip)had wall MTs arranged transversely to the root axis. In theregion elongating at a higher rate (2–4 mm), wall MTsof epidermal, cortical and stelar cells were all transverselyarranged. In the region of about 5 mm from the tip, in whichcell elongation had already ceased, wall MTs in cortical cellschanged from a transverse to an oblique arrangement in relationto the root axis. Some cells had a crossed arrangement of wallMTs, which was interpreted as representing two sets of unidirectional, oblique wall MTs in opposite cell cortices of a single cell. This change was completed within a region of 1-mm width. Sinceroots elongated at a rate of 0.6 mm h–1, it means thatthe arrangement of wall MTs changed within 2 h. An oblique arrangementof wall MTs was also observed in stelar cells. As the cellsaged, the oblique arrangement tended to change to a steeperor even a longitudinal one. (Received January 24, 1986; Accepted May 15, 1986)  相似文献

It was confirmed that osmotic adjustment occurred in young intactmung bean (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) seedlings exposed to highosmotic pressure stress. Root growth was not affected by osmoticpressure of less than 200 mOsra in the external solution, althoughhypocotyl growth was conspicuously reduced. Under this moderateosmotic stress, intracellular K+ concentration, [K+]i, increaseddramatically during the osmotic adjustment in all the regionsof the root, but the intracellular Cl concentration,[Cl]i, increased only in the aged mature region of theroot (28–33 mm from the root tip). About a half of theintracellular osmotic pressure in the aged mature region ofthe root could be ascribed to the contributions of [K+]i and[Cl]i, but in the hypocotyl, [K+]i only contributed slightlyto the osmotic adjustment. Seedlings of Rangpur lime (Citrus reticulata var. austera hybrid?)and Etrog citron (C. medica) were treated in water culture with0, 25, 50 or 100 mol m–3 NaCl, and in sand culture with0 or 100 mol m–3 NaCl. Leaf chloride analyses indicatedthat Etrog citron accumulated the most chloride at all levelsof salinity. The structure, ultrastructure and concentrationsof chloride and reserve assimilates of the primary root up to50 mm back from the tip were compared between genotypes andbetween salt treatments. There were no differences in root anatomy in the absence ofsalt between the two genotypes. The hypodermal cells developedlignified and suberized walls which blocked the plasmodesmataand resulted in degeneration of the cell contents. Frequentthin-walled passage cells in the hypodermis had living contentsand may represent major sites of ion uptake into the symplasm, which was connected with the stele via plasmodesmatal connectionswith and between the cortical cells. The primary endodermalcells had lignified casparian strips and plasmodesmata in othercell wall areas. These connections were blocked by secondarysuberization of all except the endodermal passage cells oppositethe protoxylem arcs. Suberization of the hypodermis and endodermis and the appearanceof granular deposits in the vacuole occurred closer to the roottip of both genotypes after treatment with 100 mol m–3NaCl. Levels of starch and triglyceride in 10 mm serial segmentswere similar between roots of control and salt-treated plantsand increased with distance back from the root tip. Chlorideconcentrations increased with salt treatment but values (ona tissue water basis) were similar between genotypes and betweenthe apical and proximal ends of the root. Reducing sugar concentrationsdecreased with salt treatment to a similar extent in roots ofboth genotypes. Key words: Citrus, Roots, Salinity  相似文献

Yield stress threshold (Y) and volumetric extensibility () arethe rheological properties that appear to control root growth. In this study they were measured in wheat roots by means ofparallel measurement of the growth rate (r) of intact wheatroots and of the turgor pressures (P) of individual cells withinthe expansion zone. Growth and turgor pressure were manipulatedby immersion in graded osmoticum (mannitol) solutions. Turgorwas measured with a pressure probe and growth rate by visualobservation. The influence of various growth conditions on Yand was investigated; (a) At 27 °C.In 0.5 mol m–3 CaCl2 r, P, Y and were20.7±4.6 µm min–1, 0.77±0.05 MPa,0.07±0.03 MPa and 26±1.9 µm min–1MPa–1 (expressed as increase in length), respectively.Following 24 h growth in 10 mol m–3 KC1 these parametersbecame 12.3±3.5 µm min–1, 0.72±0.04MPa, 0.13±0.01 MPa and 21±0.7 µm min–1MPa–1. After 24 h osmotic adjustment in 150 mol m–3mannitol/0.5 mol m–3 CaCl2 r= 19.6±4.2 µmmin–1, P = 0.68±0.05 MPa and Y and were 0.07±0.04MPa and 30±0.2 µm min–1 MPa–01, respectively. After 24 h growth in 350 mol m–3 mannitol/0.5 mol m–3CaCl2 r= 13.3±4.1 µm min–1, P= 0.58±0.07MPa, Y=0.12±0.01 MPa and ø 32±0.2 tim min–1MPa–1. During osmotic adjustment in 200 mol m–3mannitol/0.5 mol m–3 CaCl2, with or without KCl, the recoveryof growth rate corresponded to turgor pressure recovery (t1/2approximately 3 h). (b) At 15 °C. Lowered temperature dramatically influencedthe growth parameters which became r= 8.3±2.8 um min–1,P=0.78 MPa, r=<0.2 MPa and =15±0.1 µm min–1MPa–1. Therefore, Y and are influenced by 10 mol m–3 K+ ionsand low temperature. In each case the effective pressure forgrowth (P-Y) was large indicating that small fluctuations ofsoil water potential will not stop root elongation. The arrangement of wall microfibrils on the inner surface ofcortical cells in pea roots was observed by a replica method. In the elongating region, microfibrils were deposited transverselyto the root axis. After cell elongation stopped, the orientationof microfibril deposition changed discontinuously from a transverseto an oblique one. The change occurred at 6–7 mm fromthe root tip. The oblique orientation seemed to change discontinuouslyto another oblique one as time passed. (Received January 24, 1986; Accepted May 15, 1986)  相似文献

IAA transport in Vicia root segments was investigated for comparisonwith that in intact roots. Lanolin paste (1-mm-wide ring) oragar blocks (3?3?1.5mm), both containing IAA-2-14C were appliedto the surface or a cut end of the root segments, respectively;transported 14C was collected in receiver agar blocks placedon the cut end of the segments. When lanolin paste was appliedto 5-mm segments, basipetal transport of IAA predominated overacropetal transport. When agar blocks were applied to 1- and2-mm segments, the same was true; in longer segments (3 and5 mm long), however, basipetal movement occurred predominantlyat first but was surpassed by acropetal movement after 2–3hr. Among the segments tested (regions 2–4, 4–6and 8–10 mm from the tip), the most apical one showedthe distinctest predominancy of basipetal movement. The velocitiesof the acropetal and basipetal movement of the 14C were estimatedat 3–3.8 and 8–12 mm/hr, respectively. Autoradiographicstudy and the experiment in which wire was inserted longitudinallythrough the central part of the segments showed that basipetalmovement occurred mainly through the outer part of the rootsand acropetal movement mainly through the central cylinder. The present results were compatible with those obtained previouslywith intact roots. Some properties of polar movement, such asits specificity, inhibition by TIBA, and dependency on terneprature are described. (Received March 22, 1978; )  相似文献

Loading of K, Na and Cl into fibrous roots of salt-treated citrusgenotypes, Rangpur lime (Citrus reticulata var. austera hybrid?)and Etrog citron (C. medica L.) was investigated in relationto root anatomy, in particular, the differentiation of the epidermal-hypodermallayers with distance from the root tip. The influence of durationof salinity treatment on the characteristics of K, Na and Claccumulation in leaves of the two genotypes was explored intwo experiments respectively, covering the short term (14 d)and long term (12 weeks). This study focused on two regions of the fibrous root, a segment2–12 mm from the root tip, immediately basipetal to thezone of elongation and a differentiated region of the maturesuberized, fibrous root, 40–50 mm from the root tip. Inthe distal root segment (2–12 mm) the epidermis and hypodermisof both genotypes was observed as two closely packed, uniseriatelayers of living cells. In the proximal root segment (40–50mm) the differentiated hypodermis was evident as a uniseriatelayer of thick-walled lumina interspersed with ‘passagecells’ which were frequently associated with clustersof viable epidermal cells. The characteristics of Na and Cl loading in the two root zonesdiffered profoundly during the short term loading (acclimation)phase. Attainment of quasi-steady-states for Na and Cl in thedistal region (with the exception of Na in Etrog citron) wasrapid as was Na equilibration of the proximal root segmentsin both genotypes. In contrast, Cl loading in the proximal regiontook c. 14 d to reach a quasi-steady-state by which time Cllevels were 2 to 3 times higher in the proximal than in thedistal root segments. The superior tolerance of Rangpur lime to long term salinitywas highly correlated to Cl exclusion from the leaves. However, during the first 14 d of acclimation to 50 mol m–3 NaClthere was no segregation of the two genotypes based upon leafCl levels. Expression of differential accumulation of Cl inleaves appeared to be a time dependent process and was manifestonly after Cl saturation of the proximal root which representsthe bulk of the fibrous root system. The salt tolerance of Rangpurwas also associated with high selectivity of fibrous roots forK. over Na. A pronounced loss of K from cortical cells in theproximal root segment of salt-stressed Etrog citron was alsoevident by X-ray microanalysis. The seminal roots of N-free-grown barley seedlings were ableto take up NO3 immediately upon initial exposure; theuptake rate in the tip was half of that in the older root zones(middle and base). A lag of 60 min was required in all rootzones before the uptake rates started to increase during inductionwith external NO3. This increase could be prevented bythe addition of pFPA; we thus assume that additional NO3transport proteins were synthesized during NO3 induction.During the time-course of NO3 induction different uptakerates were measured in morphologically different regions ofthe tip (1 mm segments) indicating a regulation of NO3induction on a narrow local scale. In NO3 grown plants, NO3 uptake as well as NO3content increased basipetally along the root axis concomitantlywith increasing vacuolization of the cells. Although NO3uptake into the tip was only half of that into the older rootzones, this NO3 uptake was very important for the entireroot. Firstly, it provided the substrate for protein biosynthesisin the meristematic region: nitrate reductase activity and totalsoluble protein were highest in the first apical mm of the tip.Secondly, 3% of the NO3 taken up by the tip was foundin the base where it induced NO3 uptake: NO3 wastranslocated almost exclusively basipetally and as little as20nmolg1 root fr. wt. translocated from the tip weresufficient for acceleration of NO3 induction in the rootbase of N-free-grown plants. This clearly shows that the inductionof NO3 uptake does not depend exclusively on the availabilityof external NO3, but can be mediated also with internallytranslocated NO3.The root tip, therefore, may be consideredthe NO3 sensing region of the root. Nucleotide metabolism was studied in apical 5.0 mm root tipsof corn plants (Zea mays L., cv. Pioneer 3906) hydroponicallycultured for 7 d and then salinized for 19 d at a rate calculatedto reduce the osmotic potential (o) of the solutions by O.1MPad–1 to a final o = -0.4 MPa. Saline treatments withtwo different molar ratios of Ca2+/Na+ were employed, viz.,0–03 (2.5 mol m–3 CaCl2 + 86.5 mol m–3 NaCl)for the NaCl treatment and 0.73 (31.5 mol m–3 CaCl2 +43.1 mol m–3 NaCl) for the NaCl + CaCl2 treatment. Bothsalt treatments reduced root growth by more than 30%. The capacityof roots to provide purine nucleotides either by de novo synthesisor by re-utilization of existing bases, e.g. salvage of hypoxanthineto adenine nucleotides, was not affected by either salt treatment. However, catabolism of hypoxanthine was accelerated more than3.5-fold by both salt treatments, demonstrating an increasedcapacity for purine catabolism which would shift the normal1: 1 ratio of synthesis: degradation of purine nucleotides observedfor the roots of healthy control plants to less than 0.2 duringsalt stress. The ratio of pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis: degradationwas also reduced. In this case, the unfavourable shift towardnucleotide degradation resulted because both salt treatmentsreduced salvage capacity by more than 25%, but had no compensatingeffect on de novo synthesis or catabolism of pyrimidines. The early time-course of turgor adjustment following a hyper-or hypo-osomotic shock was examined in the brackish-water charophyteLamprothamnium papulosum. The response to a reduction in turgorwas a five to seven-fold stimulation of the influxes of Cl,K+ and Na+. The distribution of radioactive tracers in the cellsuggested that the ionic composition of the cytoplasm was strictlycontrolled during turgor adjustment. Metabolic activity wasrelatively unaffected by the loss of turgor. high fluxes throughthe cytoplasm, and a cytoplasmic K concentration possiblyas high as 280 mol m–3. Osmotic adjustment to a lower salinity was achieved by largeincreases in the passive effluxes of K+ and Cl ratherthan by decreases in their influxes. The membrane remained hyperpolarized during hyperosmotic adjustmentbut depolarized after a hypo-osmotic change. This result isdiscussed in relation to changes in the driving forces for ionmovements during osmotic transitions. Key words: Lamprothamnium, Turgor, Osmotic stress  相似文献

Transport of IAA applied to the intact root of Vicia seedlingswas investigated in relation to root growth. The root was treatedat 3–4, 4–5 or 7–8 mm from the tip with anarrow ring of lanolin paste containing IAA or IAA-2-14C ingrowth or transport experiments, respectively. The growth processalong the root axis was examined in every 1-mm part from thetip at 30 min, 1 or 4 hr intervals. The elongation zone of thecontrol root was 1–9 mm from the tip. IAA treatment broughtabout no significant change in the growth of the region apicalto the treated site, whereas distinct inhibition of growth occurredin the region basal to the treated site within 1 hr. The transportof radioactivity was observed in both acropetal and basipetaldirections within 1 hr, but the latter predominated for 8 hror more; the nearer to the tip the treatment site, the longerthe predominance lasted. The velocities of acropetal and basipetaltransport were estimated at about 4 and 8 mm/hr, respectively.Autoradiographs of transverse section of roots showed that basipetaltransport occurred mainly through the outer part of the root, whereas acropetal transport occurred mainly through the innerpart, the central cylinder. It may be concluded that the basipetallytransported IAA which passed through the outer part of the rootinhibited the elongation of the intact root. (Received November 25, 1975; )  相似文献

Hydraulic and osmotic properties of spruce roots   总被引:9,自引:6,他引:3
Hydraulic and osmotic properties of roots of 2-year-old Norwayspruce seedlings (Plcea abiea (L.) Karst) were investigatedusing different techniques (steady flow, pressure probe, andstop flow technique). Root pressures were measured using theroot pressure probe. Compared to roots of herbaceous plantsor deciduous trees, excised root systems of spruce did not developappreciable root pressure (-0.001 to 0.004 MPa or -10 to 40cm of water column). When hydrostatic pressure gradients wereused to drive water flows across the roots, hydraulic conductivities(Lpr) were determined in two types of experiments: (i) rootpressure relaxations (using the root pressure probe) and (ii)steady flow experiments (pneumatic pressures applied to theroot system or xylem or partial vacuum applied to the xylem).Root Lpr ranged between 0.2 and 810–8m s–1 MPa–1(on average) depending on the conditions. In steady flow experiments,Lpr depended on the pressure applied (or on the flow acrossthe roots) and equalled (0.190.12) to (1.21.7)10–8m s–1 MPa–1 at pressures between 0.2 and 0.4 MPaand (1.51.3)10–8 m s–1 MPa–1 at appliedpressures between 0.8 and 1.0 MPa. When pressures or vacuumwere applied to the xylem, Lpr values were similar. The hydraulicconductivity measured during pressure relaxations (transientwater flows) was similar to that obtained at high pressures(and water flows). Although there was a considerable scatterin the data, there was a tendency of the hydraulic conductivityof the roots to decrease with increasing size of the root system. When osmotic gradients were used to drive water flows, Lpr valuesobtained with the root pressure probe were much smaller thanthose measured in the presence of hydrostatic gradients. Onaverage, a root Lpr=0.01710–8 was found for osmotic andLpr=6.410–8 m s–1 MPa–1 in correspondinghydrostatic experiments, i.e. the two values differed by a factorwhich was as large as 380. The same hydraulic conductivity asthat obtained in osmotic experiments using the pressure probewas obtained by the 'stop flow techniquel. In this technique, the suction created by an osmoticum applied to the root wasbalanced by a vacuum applied to the xylem. Lpr values of rootsystems did not change significantly when measured for up to5 d. In osmotic experiments with different solutes (Na2S04,K2S04, Ca(NO3)2, mannitol), no passive uptake of solutes couldbe detected, i.e. the solute permeability was very low whichwas different from earlier findings on roots of herbs. Reflectioncoefficients of spruce roots (O were low for solutes for whichplant cell membranes exhibit values of virtually unity (  相似文献

The primary roots of the "Golden Cross Bantam 70" cultivar ofZea mays are agravitropic in darkness and their orthogravitropismis light-dependent. Analysis of the agravitropic roots providesimportant information about the mechanism of orthogravitropism. However, the underlying mechanism of the agravitropic responsein darkness is unknown. We found that the growth of intact primaryroots was inhibited by gravitropic stimulation (i.e., changingthe orientation of the roots from vertical to horizontal) indarkness, but that of detipped roots was not. The role of calciumin this gravistimulation-dependent inhibition of growth wasinvestigated using apical 5-mm segments of the primary roots. The gravistimulation-dependent inhibition of growth was preventedby applying 10 mM MES-KOH buffer at pH 6.0 to the root cap.By contrast, the application of 0.1–1 mM buffer at pH6.0 and 10 mM buffer at pH 4.5–5.0 allowed the gravistimulation-dependentinhibition of growth. Furthermore, when the buffer of 10 mM(pH 6.0) contained 1–5 mM CaCl2, the gravistimulation-dependentinhibition of growth was apparent. By contrast, when weak (1mM) buffer at pH 6.0 or 10 mM buffer at pH 4.5 contained 5 mMEGTA, no gravistimulation-dependent inhibition of growth wasobserved. Thus, the gravistimulation-dependent inhibition ofgrowth in darkness seemed to be mediated by an increase in thelevel of free Ca2+ in the root tip. These results suggest thatfree Ca2+ in the apoplast of the root tip plays an importantrole in the agravitropic response in darkness as well as inorthogravitropism under light of the roots of this cultivarof Zea mays. The charophyte Lamprothamnium papulosum (Wallr.) J. Gr. is foundat salinities varying from nearly fresh water to twice thatof sea water. It can maintain its turgor constant at 302 mosmolkg–1 (0.73 MPa) when exposed to external osmotic pressuresof 550 to 1350 mosmol kg–1 (1.3–3.3 MPa). Turgorshows a tendency to rise slightly at lower osmotic pressure(388 mosmol kg–1 of turgor at 150 mosmol kg–1 externalosmolality). K+ and Cl are the main solutes in the vacuole, and are most important in controlling internal osmotic pressure.Mg2+, Ca2+, and SO2–4 are present in significant amountsbut their concentrations do not change with changes in externalsalinity. Na+ is present in lower concentration than K+, andplays a minor role in regulating turgor. Sucrose is presentin significant concentrations, but changes little with changesin salinity. Two enzymes involved in sucrose metabolism, sucrosephosphate synthetase (EC 2.4.1.14 [EC] ), and sucrose synthetase (EC2.4.1.13 [EC] ) are active in whole cell extracts of Lamprothamnium. As in the fresh water charophytes, Lamprothamnium membrane potentialmay be depolarized (close to EK) or hyperpolarized, and presumablyof electrogenic origin. Both types of potential are found atall salinities tested.  相似文献

Tobacco shoots were grown in vitro for 35 d, in MS culture mediummodified to include various sources (nitrate-N, ammonium-N ora mixture) and levels (0–120 mM) of N, and in the presenceof 0–180 mM NaCI or iso-osmotic concentrations of mannitol.Growth of control plantlets was significantly inhibited whenNH4+-N was the sole N source, and at high (120 mM) NO3-N supply. Under conditions of salt stress (90 and 180 mM NaCI)growth was repressed, with roots being more severely affectedthan shoots. Salinity also inhibited root emergence in vitro. The only alleviation of the salt stress by nitrate nutritionobserved in this study was on shoot growth parameters of plantletsgrown on 60 mM NO3-N and 90 mM NaCI. Although both weresignificantly inhibited by NaCI, nitrate reduc-tase activitywas more severely affected than nitrate uptake. When mannitolreplaced NaCI in the culture medium, similar Inhibition of growth, nutrient uptake and enzyme activity were recorded. These observations, together with the relatively low recorded values for Na+ andCI uptake, indicate that under in vitro salt stress conditionsthe negative effects of NaCI are primarily osmotic. The effect of development on leaf elongation rate (LER) andthe distribution of relative elemental growth rate (REGR), epidermalcell length, and xyloglucan endotransglycosylase (XET) activitythrough the growing zone of the third leaf of maize was investigated. As the leaf aged and leaf elongation slowed, the length of thegrowing zone (initially 35 mm) and the maximal REGR (initially0.09 mm mm–1 h–1) declined. The decline in REGRwas not uniform through the growth profile. Leaf ageing sawa maintenance of REGR towards the base of the leaf. Epidermalcell size was not constant at a given position in the growingzone, but was seen to increase as the leaf aged. There was apeak of XET activity close to the base of the growing zone. The peak of XET activity preceded the zone of maximum REGR.XET activity declined as leaves aged and their elongation rateslowed. When leaf elongation was complete a distinct peak ofXET activity remained close to the base of the leaf. Osmotic Adjustment and Osmotic Constituents in Roots of Mung Bean Seedlings   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Osmotic adjustment in roots of mung bean seedlings (Vigna mungo(L.) Hepper) and the effect of cotyledon excision on the osmoticadjustment were investigated. The major osmotic constituentsin roots of intact seedlings were K+, Cl, free aminoacids and sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose). All theseintracellular concentrations distinctly increased under osmoticstress and contributed to about 80% of the intracellular osmoticpressure of the root cell sap. Cotyledon excision remarkablysuppressed both the osmotic adjustment and the elongation inroots. However, the effect of cotyledon excision on intracellularK+ and Cl concentrations in roots was quite small. Twodifferent mechanisms are likely for the osmotic adjustment inroots. One is the K+ and Cl-dependent osmotic adjustmentwhich is cotyledon-independent, and the other is the osmoticadjustment dependent on the supply of free amino acids and sugarsfrom cotyledons. Callose was detected in the cell walls of the tips of growingroot hairs of Trifolium species and the non-legume Phleum pratenseusing u.v. fluorescence of fresh material stained with 0·005%aniline blue. Inoculation of the roots with Rhizobium trifolii,R. leguminosarum, R. meliloti, and R. japonicum, or additionof 10–7 and 10–8 M indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) increasedtip callose formation. Most tip callose was formed at 12 °C, and amounts declinedprogressively at 18, 24, and 30 °C, with very little formedat 36 °C. Tip calloso usually became less and disappearedin individual root hairs as they aged. Callose which appeared prominently in the host cell walls atthe points of initiation of infection threads did not usuallydisappear as the hairs matured. There was little or no extensionof callose along the infection thread and none in the threadtip or in the cell nucleus. Presumptive regions of callose hadsimilar structure and electron density as root hair wall materialand were sometimes related to arrays of vesicles in the hostcytoplasm. The external surface of the hair wall bore smallpegs or papillae (0·1–0·2 µm) continuouswith the outer layer of the wall and possibly associated withattachment of bacteria. Bacteria were usually umboriate at thepoint of attachment and their polyphosphate granules were muchlarger near the root hair than at the distal end.  相似文献

Cultivated Agave mapisaga and A. salmiana can have an extremelyhigh above-ground dry-weight productivity of 40 Mg ha–1yr–1. To help understand the below-ground capabilitiesthat support the high above-ground productivity of these Crassulaceanacid metabolism plants, roots were studied in the laboratoryand in plantations near Mexico City. For approximately 15-year-oldplants, the lateral spread of roots from the plant base averaged1.3 m and the maximal root depth was 0.8 m, both considerablygreater than for desert succulents of the same age. Root andshoot growth occurred all year, although the increase in shootgrowth at the beginning of the wet season preceded the increasein growth of main roots. New lateral roots branching from themain roots were more common at the beginning of the wet season, which favoured water uptake with a minimal biomass investment, whereas growth of new main roots occurred later in the growingseason. The root: shoot dry weight ratio was extremely low, less than 0.07 for 6-year-old plants of both species, and decreasedwith plant age. The elongation rates of main roots and lateralroots were 10 to 17 mm d–1, higher than for various desertsucculents but similar to elongation rates for roots of highlyproductive C3 and C4 agronomic species. The respiration rateof attached main roots was 32 µmol CO2 evolved kg–1dry weight s–1 at 4 weeks of age, that of lateral rootswas about 70% higher, and both rates decreased with root age.Such respiration rates are 4- to 5-fold higher than for Agavedeserti, but similar to rates for C3 and C4 agronomic species. The root hydraulic conductivity had a maximal value of 3 x 10–7ms–1 MPa–1 at 4 weeks of age, similar to A. deserti. The radial hydraulic conductivity from the root surface to thexylem decreased and the axial conductivity along the xylem increasedwith root age, again similar to A. deserti. Thus, although rootsof A. mapisaga and A. salmiana had hydraulic properties perunit length similar to those of a desert agave, their highergrowth rates, their higher respiration rates, and the greatersoil volume explored by their roots than for various desertsucculents apparently helped support their high above-groundbiomass productivity Key words: Crassulacean acid metabolism, productivity, root elongation rate, root system, water uptake  相似文献
