Lichens are symbioses of two organisms, a fungal mycobiont and a photoautotrophic photobiont. In nature, many lichens tolerate extreme environmental conditions and thus became valuable models in astrobiological research to fathom biological resistance towards non-terrestrial conditions; including space exposure, hypervelocity impact simulations as well as space and Martian parameter simulations. All studies demonstrated the high resistance towards non-terrestrial abiotic factors of selected extremotolerant lichens. Besides other adaptations, this study focuses on the morphological and anatomical traits by comparing five lichen species—Circinaria gyrosa, Rhizocarpon geographicum, Xanthoria elegans, Buellia frigida, Pleopsidium chlorophanum—used in present-day astrobiological research. Detailed investigation of thallus organization by microscopy methods allows to study the effect of morphology on lichen resistance and forms a basis for interpreting data of recent and future experiments. All investigated lichens reveal a common heteromerous thallus structure but diverging sets of morphological-anatomical traits, as intra-/extra-thalline mucilage matrices, cortices, algal arrangements, and hyphal strands. In B. frigida, R. geographicum, and X. elegans the combination of pigmented cortex, algal arrangement, and mucilage seems to enhance resistance, while subcortex and algal clustering seem to be crucial in C. gyrosa, as well as pigmented cortices and basal thallus protrusions in P. chlorophanum. Thus, generalizations on morphologically conferred resistance have to be avoided. Such differences might reflect the diverging evolutionary histories and are advantageous by adapting lichens to prevalent abiotic stressors. The peculiar lichen morphology demonstrates its remarkable stake in resisting extreme terrestrial conditions and may explain the high resistance of lichens found in astrobiological research.  相似文献

Antarctic habitats harbour yet unexplored niches for microbial communities. Among these, lichen symbioses are very long-living and stable microenvironments for bacterial colonization. In this work, we present a first assessment of the culturable fraction of bacteria associated with Antarctic lichens. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence of 30 bacterial strains isolated from five epilithic lichens belonging to four species (Lecanora fuscobrunnea, Umbilicaria decussata, Usnea antarctica, Xanthoria elegans) shows that these represent the main bacterial lineages Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Deinococcus-Thermus. Within the Actinomycetales, two strains group in the genera Arthrobacter and Knoellia, respectively. Most of the other Actinobacteria form well-supported groups, but could be assigned with certainty only at the family level, and one is in isolated position in the Mycobacteriaceae. The strains in Firmicutes and Proteobacteria belong to the genera Paenibacillus, Bacillus and Pseudomonas, which were already reported from lichen thalli. Some genera such as Burkholderia and Azotobacter, reported in the literature as also associated with lichens, have not been detected in this study. One strain represents the first record of Deinococcus in epilithic lichens; it is related to the species Deinococcus alpinitundrae from Alpine environments and may represent a new species. Further separated and well-supported clades indicate the presence of possibly new entities. Some of the examined strains are related to known psychrophilic bacteria isolated from ice and other extreme environments, others with bacteria distributed worldwide even in temperate climates. Most of the strains tested were able to grow at low temperatures, but tolerated a wider range of temperature. Ecological and evolutionary implications of these lichen-associated bacteria are discussed.  相似文献

Does secondary chemistry enable lichens to grow on iron-rich substrates?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Lichen substances are shown to increase or to inhibit the adsorption of Fe at cation exchange sites. The influence on the adsorption strongly differs between individual lichen substances and is different for Fe2+ and Fe3+. These results add a new biological role to the known functions of lichen secondary metabolites. In an experiment with cellulose filters, which were soaked with acetone solutions of lichen substances and were then incubated with micromolar solutions of FeCl2 or FeCl3, many lichen substances were found to increase Fe3+ adsorption, whereas others had no effect. Most lichen substances had no effect on Fe2+ adsorption, but two were found to reduce and one to increase the level of adsorption. Lichens of Fe-poor and -rich sites contain lichen substances with different adsorption behavior towards Fe2+ and Fe3+. All the studied lichen substances, which only occur in lichens of Fe-poor sites, turned out to be effective Fe3+ adsorbents. Lichens of Fe-bearing rock and slag, however, were found to lack lichen substances, or to contain substances that did not adsorb Fe3+ and had no effect on Fe2+ adsorption, or thirdly, to contain substances that increased Fe3+ adsorption, but decreased Fe2+ adsorption. These results suggest that lichen substances do play a significant role in Fe adsorption in lichens and determine their tolerance to excess concentrations of Fe. Notwithstanding the strong correlation between the secondary chemistry of lichen species and their preference for Fe-rich or Fe-poor substrates, the postulated mechanism of temporary Fe adsorption by lichen substances has to be subject of future biochemical research.  相似文献

Epiphytic lichens can contribute significantly to ecosystem nutrient input because they efficiently accumulate atmospheric mineral nutrients and, in the case of cyanolichens, also fix nitrogen. The rate at which carbon and other nutrients gained by lichens enters the ecosystem is determined by lichen litter decomposability and by invertebrate consumption of lichen litter. In turn, these processes are driven by the secondary compounds present in senesced lichens. Therefore, we explored how lichen palatability and concentrations of secondary compounds change with tissue senescence for Lobaria pulmonaria, a green-algal lichen with cyanobacterial cephalodia, and Lobaria scrobiculata, a cyanobacterial lichen. During senescence both lichens lost 38–48 % of their stictic acid chemosyndrome, while m-scrobiculin and usnic acid in L. scrobiculata remained unchanged. Snails preferred senesced rather than fresh L. pulmonaria, while senesced L. scrobiculata were avoided. This provides evidence that species with labile secondary compounds will have higher turnover rates, through consumption and decomposition, than those producing more stable secondary compounds.  相似文献

We investigated how lichen carbon-based secondary compounds (CBSCs) affect abundance of invertebrates in five lichen species growing on the forest floor (Cladonia rangiferina, Cladonia stellaris) or on tree trunks (Evernia prunastri, Hypogymnia physodes, Pseudevernia furfuracea). To do this, CBSCs were removed by rinsing lichen thalli in acetone (which has no adverse effects on the lichens) and the lichens were re-transplanted in their natural habitat. After 4 months there was higher abundance of mites, springtails and spiders in the three epiphytic lichens that had their CBSC concentrations reduced. The increase in predatory spiders following CBSC reduction suggests that the compounds have multitrophic consequences. The acetone treatment reduced the number of nematodes in four of the lichen species. Given that lichens serve as important habitats for a diverse range of invertebrates, increased knowledge of how lichen CBSCs may regulate their abundance helps us to better understand the role that lichens and their defence compounds play in structuring forest food webs.  相似文献

Many lichens can cope with heavy-metal stress, however, the mechanisms of lichen tolerance are still not fully understood. Some lichen secondary metabolites (depsides and depsidones), produced in lichens by the fungal symbiont and accumulated on the outer surface of its hyphae, are supposed to play an important role in the extracellular immoblilization of heavy metals. Lichen photobionts (algal partners in the symbiosis), although surrounded by the mycobiont hyphae, may also accumulate high amounts of trace metals. This can lead to physiological disruptions and morphological damage in algal cells and hence affect the lichen physiological status. We hypothesized that lichen species/specimens living in heavily polluted sites and showing HM tolerance possess a higher content of secondary metabolites than those living in unpolluted sites. Hence, their photobionts can be better protected from the excess of metal ions and need to produce less metal-complexing phytochelatins (PCn) to combat metal toxicity. Specimens of Hypocenomyce scalaris, Cladonia furcata and Lepraria spp. sampled from Zn/Pb-polluted and control sites were compared for the accumulation of Zn/Pb and secondary metabolites, as well as for their production of phytochelatins and glutathione in response to experimental Zn or Pb exposure. Generally, the lichen specimens sampled from the HM-polluted site contained higher amounts of Zn and Pb as well as lichen substances (different depsides and depsidones) than those from the control site. A strong positive correlation was found between the accumulation of secondary metabolites and Zn/Pb accumulation (R2 = 0.98 and 0.63, respectively). For the first time, production of phytochelatins (PC2-3) in response to Zn and Pb (50-200 μM) exposure was found in H. scalaris, L. elobata, L. incana and C. furcata. In both species of Lepraria also cysteine, a substrate for GSH and PCs synthesis was detected. The lichens from the polluted site produced under the same exposure conditions, or in response to higher metal concentrations, lower amounts of PCn than those sampled from the control site. It strongly suggests that less Zn and Pb ions reached the photobiont cells of the lichens containing higher amounts of secondary metabolites (lecanoric, fumarprotocetraric, stictic, constictic acids, antranorin). The results obtained support the putative role of some metabolites in heavy-metal tolerance of the lichens inhabiting metal-polluted habitats.  相似文献

Rainforest leaves are a relatively short-lived habitat which is well defined in both time and space, and which is occupied by a range of specialized lichens which might be expected to show survival strategies contrasting with those of other lichens. Changes in the lichen populations of individual leaves in subtropical rainforest at Ml Glorious, Queensland, Australia were observed for 1662 days. Over 1100 days elapsed before 50% of surviving leaves showed visible lichen thalli and the probability of colonization estimated from life tables did not exceed 0.42 ± 0.20 at any time. Porina epiphylla had a relative growth rate of 3.01 × 10?2 mm2 mm?2 week?1, a high value for a lichen. The relative growth rate of Strigula subtilissima, however, was 6.86 × 10?2 mm2 mm?2 week?1, the highest rate known for any lichen. Small size and high relative growth rates indicate that lichens on leaves have the most extreme ruderal strategy yet demonstrated amongst the lichens.  相似文献

Lichens are a symbiosis consisting of heterotrophic, fungal (mycobiont) and photosynthetic algal or cyanobacterial (photobiont) components. We examined photobiont sequences from lichens in the Ross Sea Region of Antarctica using the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA and tested the hypothesis that lichens from this extreme environment would demonstrate low selectivity in their choice of photobionts. Sequence data from three targeted lichen species (Buellia frigida, Umbilicaria aprina and Umbilicaria decussata) showed that all three were associated with a common algal haplotype (an unnamed Trebouxia species) which was present in all taxa and at all sites, suggesting lower selectivity. However, there was also association with unique, local photobionts as well as evidence for species-specific selection. For example, the cosmopolitan U. decussata was associated with two photobiont species, Trebouxia jamesii and an unnamed species. The most commonly collected lichen (B. frigida) had its highest photobiont haplotype diversity in the Dry Valley region, which may have served as a refugium during glacial periods. We conclude that even in these extreme environments, photobiont selectivity still has an influence on the successful colonisation of lichens. However, the level of selectivity is variable among species and may be related to the ability of some (e.g. B. frigida) to colonise a wider range of habitats.  相似文献

Fungal genomes display incredible levels of complexity and diversity, and are exceptional study systems for genome evolution. Here we used the Oxford Nanopore MinION sequencing platform to generate high-quality fungal genomes from complex metagenomic samples of lichen thalli. We sequenced two wolf lichens using one flow cell per sample, generating 17.1 Gbps for Letharia lupina and 14.3 Gbps for Letharia columbiana. The resulting L. lupina genome is one of the most contiguous lichen genomes available to date, with 49.2 Mbp contained on 31 contigs. The L. columbiana genome, while less contiguous, is still relatively high quality, with 52.3 Mbp on a total of 161 contigs. Each thallus for both species contained multiple distinct haplotypes, a phenomenon that has rarely been empirically demonstrated. The Oxford Nanopore sequencing technologies are robust and effective when applied to complex symbioses, and have the potential to fundamentally transform our understanding of fungal genetics.  相似文献

Lichen substances (i.e. lichen-specific carbon-based secondary compounds) are known to be involved in the uptake and immobilization of metal ions, though the biochemical mechanisms of this interaction are largely unexplained. Previous research on potential effects of lichen substances on heavy metal uptake and tolerance mostly focused on lichens in heavily polluted areas with exceptionally high metal concentrations. In the present study, we aimed at gathering information as to whether lichen substances might be involved in the fine-tuning of metal uptake even at not or low-polluted sites. Therefore, we studied lichen substance concentrations in the epiphytic lichen Hypogymnia physodes and metal concentrations in its substratum in a montane spruce forest of Germany. H. physodes produces two depsides and five depsidones, which had been shown to be involved in metal homeostasis, namely in Cu and Mn uptake, in previous laboratory experiments. The amount of lichen substances increased with increasing heavy metal concentration in the substratum, though the latter varied only in the range of a few μmol g−1 between the sample trees. Variability of lichen substance concentrations in H. physodes within the individual trees was low. Among the different lichen substances of H. physodes, the amount of the depsidone physodalic acid relative to the total of lichen substances was most closely correlated to the concentrations of Cu and Mn in the substratum, whereas the amount of the depsidone 3-hydroxyphysodic acid decreased both with increasing concentrations of these two metals and physodalic acid. Thus, our data suggest that lichen substances contribute to metal homeostasis not only in heavy metal-rich habitats, but also at not or low-polluted sites where the lichen substances apparently help to maintain constant intracellular metal concentrations despite of spatially varying availabilities of metal ions.  相似文献

Isolated steppes on sunlit southern slopes are a characteristic feature of the northern Mongolian mountain taiga. Lichen diversity of such steppe slopes was studied in the western Khentey Mountains, located between the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator and Lake Baikal. Functional types of lichen species were analyzed and measurements of microclimate were carried out as a first approach to figure out relevant site factors that control lichen distribution in the different habitat types of the steppe slopes. Such habitats include meadow steppe, siliceous rock and savanna-like Ulmus pumila open woodlands. Dominance of chlorolichens with either yellow or orange lichen substances (usnic acid, parietin, pulvinic acid derivatives) or melanin in the cortex, which absorb both ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and visible light usable for photosynthesis (PAR) suggests that effective protection against high solar irradiation is a crucial selective factor for lichens on the steppe slopes. The slopes are subject to high irradiation because of their steepness and because of the ultracontinental climate. In Betula platyphylla–Larix sibirica light taiga forest bordering the steppe on northern slopes, lichens with and without effective photoprotection co-occur. A second important factor, apparently influencing lichen distribution of the study area is water availability. Low precipitation, which falls in numerous small rain showers, combined with frequent dewfall in summer favors chlorolichens and explains the limitation of cyanolichens to particularly moist microsites, such as water runoffs on rocks or moss cushions on inclined or horizontal tree trunks. Ecophysiological measurements to prove these hypotheses on the significance of sunlight and water availability for lichen performance in the study area have not yet been carried out.  相似文献

Symbioses represent a frequent and successful lifestyle on earth and lichens are one of their classic examples. Recently, bacterial communities were identified as stable, specific and structurally integrated partners of the lichen symbiosis, but their role has remained largely elusive in comparison to the well-known functions of the fungal and algal partners. We have explored the metabolic potentials of the microbiome using the lung lichen Lobaria pulmonaria as the model. Metagenomic and proteomic data were comparatively assessed and visualized by Voronoi treemaps. The study was complemented with molecular, microscopic and physiological assays. We have found that more than 800 bacterial species have the ability to contribute multiple aspects to the symbiotic system, including essential functions such as (i) nutrient supply, especially nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur, (ii) resistance against biotic stress factors (that is, pathogen defense), (iii) resistance against abiotic factors, (iv) support of photosynthesis by provision of vitamin B12, (v) fungal and algal growth support by provision of hormones, (vi) detoxification of metabolites, and (vii) degradation of older parts of the lichen thallus. Our findings showed the potential of lichen-associated bacteria to interact with the fungal as well as algal partner to support health, growth and fitness of their hosts. We developed a model of the symbiosis depicting the functional multi-player network of the participants, and argue that the strategy of functional diversification in lichens supports the longevity and persistence of lichens under extreme and changing ecological conditions.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The integrity and evolution of lichen symbioses depend on a fine-tuned combination of algal and fungal genotypes. Geographically widespread species complexes of lichenized fungi can occur in habitats with slightly varying ecological conditions, and it remains unclear how this variation correlates with symbiont selectivity patterns in lichens. In an attempt to address this question, >300 samples were taken of the globally distributed and ecologically variable lichen-forming species complex Tephromela atra, together with closely allied species, in order to study genetic diversity and the selectivity patterns of their photobionts.

Methods

Lichen thalli of T. atra and of closely related species T. grumosa, T. nashii and T. atrocaesia were collected from six continents, across 24 countries and 62 localities representing a wide range of habitats. Analyses of genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships were carried out both for photobionts amplified directly from the lichen thalli and from those isolated in axenic cultures. Morphological and anatomical traits were studied with light and transmission electron microscopy in the isolated algal strains.

Key Results

Tephromela fungal species were found to associate with 12 lineages of Trebouxia. Five new clades demonstrate the still-unrecognized genetic diversity of lichen algae. Culturable, undescribed lineages were also characterized by phenotypic traits. Strong selectivity of the mycobionts for the photobionts was observed in six monophyletic Tephromela clades. Seven Trebouxia lineages were detected in the poorly resolved lineage T. atra sensu lato, where co-occurrence of multiple photobiont lineages in single thalli was repeatedly observed.

Conclusions

Low selectivity apparently allows widespread lichen-forming fungi to establish successful symbioses with locally adapted photobionts in a broader range of habitats. This flexibility might correlate with both lower phylogenetic resolution and evolutionary divergence in species complexes of crustose lichen-forming fungi.  相似文献

We isolated and characterized eight microsatellite markers for Dictyochloropsis reticulata, the primary photosynthetic partner of the epiphytic lichen Lobaria pulmonaria. These are the first microsatellite loci reported for a lichen symbiotic alga. These polymorphic markers will be useful for investigating spatial genetic structure, biogeography and dispersal of this eukaryotic alga and will generally shed light on the coevolution of the green-algal lichen symbioses.  相似文献

Background and Aims: Many species of lichen-forming fungi contain yellow or orangeextracellular pigments belonging to the dibenzofurans (usnicacid), anthraquinones (e.g. parietin) or pulvinic acid group. These pigments are all equally efficient light screens, leadingus to question the potential ecological and evolutionary significanceof diversity in yellow and orange lichen substances. Here thehypothesis is tested that the different pigments differ in metal-bindingcharacteristics, which suggest that they may contribute to adaptationto sites differing in pH and metal availability. Methods: UV spectroscopy was used to study the dissociation and the pHdependence of the metal-binding behaviour of seven isolatedlichen substances in methanol. Metals applied were selectedmacro- and micro-nutrients (Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mg2+, Mn2+ andZn2+). Key Results: All the pigments studied are strong to moderate acids with pKa1values between 2·8 and 4·5. Metal complexationis common in the lichen substances studied. Complexation takesplace under acidic conditions with usnic acid, but under alkalineconditions with parietin and most compounds of the pulvinicacid group. The pulvinic acid derivative rhizocarpic acid formsmetal complexes both in the acidic and the alkaline range. Conclusions: Metal complexation by lichen substances could be a prerequisitefor lichen substance-mediated control of metal uptake. Assumingsuch an effect at pH values where the affinity of the metalfor the lichen substance is intermediate would explain the strongpreference of lichens with usnic or rhizocarpic acids to acidicsubstrata. Moreover, it would explain the preference of lichenswith parietin and some lichens with compounds of the pulvinicacid group either for nutrient-rich substrata at low pH or forcalcareous substrata.  相似文献

BackgroundHeavy metals that pass through the plasmalemma are expected to influence on lichen metabolic processes; however, lichens may tolerate high concentrations of metals by sequestrating them extracellularly. Heavy metal accumulation level fundamentally determine the success of lichens in the colonisation of polluted sites; however, the proportions between extra- and intracellular metal concentrations in lichen thalli are still poorly recognized. In this study metal accumulation patterns of selected toxic trace elements, i.e. Pb, Cd, and micronutrients, i.e. Zn, Cu and Ni, in Cladonia cariosa thalli were recognised in relation to extra- and intracellular fractions.MethodsThe intracellular and total concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu and Ni in lichen thalli collected from eleven variously polluted sites were determined by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. Additionally, organic carbon and total nitrogen contents as well as pH of soil substrate were measured.ResultsThe accumulation patterns differed between studied metal elements; the major part of Zn, Pb and Cd loads was accumulated extracellularly, whereas Cu and Ni accumulation was mostly intracellular. Like toxic trace elements, Zn was accumulated mainly extracellularly at high polluted sites. The non-linear models most reliably reflect relationships between intracellular and extracellular metal contents in C. cariosa thalli. The intracellular contents of Zn, Pb, Cd and Cu increased slower at higher than at lower extracellular concentrations. Moreover, at higher total concentrations of elements in the thalli, their extracellular proportions were markedly increased.ConclusionThe results suggest that in the face of extreme Zn-enrichment, lichens demonstrate the ability to accumulate the excess of Zn outside the cells. Therefore, it can be concluded that metal accumulation depend not only on the element but also on its abundance in the environment and direct availability for lichens. The studied species showed a defence against excessive intracellular accumulation when a given element is in excess. Such capability may facilitate the colonization of extremely polluted sites by certain pioneer lichens.  相似文献

Lichens are fungal and algal/cyanobacterial symbioses resulting in the production of specific metabolites. Some of these are forming an available biomass for phytochemical investigations, including the assessment of biological activities of the isolated compounds. The alpine or polar region are characterised by highly stressful environmental conditions for many organisms, but lichens are among the dominating organisms in these habitats. In the performant mutual protective system, lichen fungi often accumulate high amounts of metabolites with specific physicochemical properties (UV absorbents, hydrophobicity) which help the lichens to survive. Unique secondary metabolites and polysaccharides have been isolated and tested from these organisms. Even though this has been tested until now only with a low number of compounds so far, interesting activities have been recorded. We review here some of the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and antioxidant activities properties described. Solutions with axenic biotechnological cultivation of each symbiotic partner and particularly the mycobiont to obtain the lichen secondary metabolites are challenging to overcome the limitations for the supply of these rare compounds. Additionally, these lichens appear to harbour a diversity of culturable microorganisms from which active compounds have also been isolated recently.  相似文献

Tree species differ in longevity, canopy structure, and bark texture, chemistry and water storage. Tree species-specific traits play a role in shaping epiphytic vegetation and likely influence the community assembly of organisms feeding on epiphytes. Lichenivorous gastropods, species with calcium-rich shells in particular, need calcium and likely occur more abundantly in and around tree species with high available calcium. We quantified gastropod grazing on the epiphytic lichens Lobaria pulmonaria and Lobaria scrobiculata transplanted to blocks of adjacent trunks of Acer platanoides, Quercus robur and Tilia cordata. We tested the hypothesis that tree species known to have more available Ca, exhibit more grazing damage on transplanted lichens than trees with lower Ca-availability. The grazing pressure was 1.6–1.8 times higher for lichen transplants on Acer and Tilia known to produce litter with easily soluble Ca than on Quercus, which binds Ca as oxalate. Trees with a high grazing pressure on transplants had greater natural abundance of Lobaria virens than of L. pulmonaria. Gastropods preferred L. scrobiculata to L. pulmonaria, evidenced by more observed grazing marks and greater measured biomass loss. We attribute this difference to the lower concentration of carbon-based secondary compounds in L. scrobiculata. However, the strength of the preference varied between the three tree species receiving lichen transplants and was strongest on A. platanoides, while gastropods on T. cordata grazed equal amounts of each transplanted lichen. In conclusion, tree species influenced grazing patterns of gastropods on epiphytic lichens. In addition to bark pH and other factors, we have shown that tree species-specific differences in grazing pressure play a role in shaping the epiphytic macrolichen community.  相似文献

There is a need for non-invasive monitoring of temporal and spatial variation in hydration and photosynthetic activity of red-listed poikilohydric autotrophs. Here, we simultaneously recorded kinetics in RGB-colors (photos), reflectance spectra, water content, maximal (FV/FM), and effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) during desiccation in foliose lichens differing in cortical characteristics and photobionts. The spectral absorbance peaks of chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, and phycoerythrin were clearly displayed at high hydration levels. Brightness and total RGB colors of the lichens strongly increased during desiccation. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) efficiently estimated hydration level and ΦPSII – a proxy for lichen photosynthesis – in all species, including threatened old forest lichens. Color and reflectance indices based on green wavelengths gave good estimates of water content in cephalo- and chlorolichens, but not in cyanolichens with a wider range of photosynthetic pigments. Due to species-specific characteristics, species-wise calibration is essential for non-invasive assessments of lichen functioning.  相似文献

The selectivity of mycobionts and cyanobionts in lichen symbioses were examined. We analyzed symbiotic cyanobionts, collected from different sample sites, and compared them to free‐living cyanobacteria Nostoc. Cyanobionts were obtained from lichens assigned to the genera Pseudocyphellaria and Sticta, in particular. Multiple gene loci were screened and direct optimization was used in the phylogenetic analyses. We show that many lichen fungi are strongly selective towards their cyanobionts. Lichenized ascomycetes seem to be able to identify and choose a specific strain, species or a species group of Nostoc with which to associate. The present analyses also suggest that some of the Nostoc taxa may be specialized in symbiotic life with only lichenized ascomycetes. Despite the selectivity observed in fungi, there appears to be no coevolution between the partners. We have also discussed the problems of using the tRNALeu intron as a marker in phylogenetic analyses. © The Willi Hennig Society 2006.  相似文献
