New genera and species of ericaceae (Vaccinieae) from Costa Rica and Panama

Two new monotypic genera,Didonica andUtleya, are described, withD. pendula from Panama andU. costaricensis from Costa Rica.Disterigma trimera (Panama),D. utleyorum (Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador),Lateropora santafeensis (Panama),Lysiclesia panamensis (Panama),Macleania talamancensis (Costa Rica),Themistoclesia costaricensis (Costa Rica) andT. horquetensis (Panama),Vaccinium costaricense andV. orosiense (both from Costa Rica) and V.jefense (Panama) are all described as new. New combinations are provided for the PanamanianVaccinium floccosum (=Symphysia floccosa) and the West IndianVaccinium racemosum (=Symphysia racemosa). Keys are provided for the Central American species ofDisterigma andThemistoclesia, the species ofLateropora andLysiclesia, and the Costa Rican and Panamanian species ofVaccinium. Six new species are illustrated.     

Notes on neotropical Vaccinieae (Ericaceae). VIII. New species of Cavendishia from northwestern South America

Recent field collecting in northwestern South America has resulted in the discovery of numerous new Ericaceae. Twelve new species ofCavendishia are herein described. Line drawings and SEM micrographs are included to illustrate certain taxonomically important features.     

A new Vaccinium (Ericaceae: Vaccinieae) from Guerrero,Mexico

Vaccinium wilburii, a striking epiphyte with pink flowers and woody tuberous roots, is described, illustrated, and compared with similar species.     

A new species of Paullinia (Sapindaceae) from Costa Rica

Paullinia fournieri, a new species from Costa Rica is described, illustrated, and its relationships to other species are discussed.     

A new species of Lamproderma (Myxomycetes) from Costa Rica

Lamproderma magniretisporum, a new species of myxomycete from Costa Rica, is described and illustrated. This new species is characterized by its lignicolous habitat, long stalk, dark radial capillitium, large spores, and reticulate spore ornamentation. The stability of the taxonomic characters of L. magniretisporum is supported by two well-developed collections. The morphology of the sporocarp was subjected to detailed study with both the light microscope and the scanning electron microscope. Micrographs of all relevant features are presented. A new species of Maxillaria (Orchidaceae) from Costa Rica

Maxillaria suaveolens Barringer from the Gulfo Dolce region of Costa Rica is described and illustrated.     

Two new species of Costus (Costaceae) from Costa Rica

As a result of a review of the Costaceae for theManual de las Plantas de Costa Rica, two new species ofCostus (C. ricus andC. osae) are here described and illustrated. The assignment of the new species ofCostus subgen.Costus is discussed.     

A new species of Trichosalpinx (Orchidaceae: Pleurothallidinae) from Costa Rica

Trichosalpinx sanctuarii, a new species of Orchidaceae, subtribe Pleurothallidinae, is described and illustrated. It most resembles T. ringens, from which it is distinguished in the text. The new species is endemic to Costa Rica.     

A new species of Dicrotendipes (Diptera: Chironomidae) from Costa Rica

The adult male of Dicrotendipes baru is described from the Dominical area of southwestern Costa Rica. The species is characterized by its elongate club-like superior volsella. This species represents the third member of the genus known from Costa Rica.     

Blakea penduliflora (Melastomataceae): A new green-flowered species from Costa Rica

Blakea penduliflora, a highland epiphyte from Costa Rica, is described, illustrated and compared with the three known Mesoamerican congeners characterized by pendent green flowers and copious nectar.     

A new isidiate species of Arthonia (Ascomycota: Arthoniaceae) from Costa Rica

The new corticolous species Arthonia isidiata is described from the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica. A. isidiata is characterized by minute, cylindrical to coralloid isidia produced on the thallus surface. The species currently is known only from the type locality in Corcovado National Park, where it occurs abundantly in the coastal rainforest around Sirena Biological Station.     

Plutarchia ecuadorensis (Ericaceae,Vaccinieae): a new species and a new generic record for Ecuador

Plutarchia, a shrubby páramo genus, is here reported for the first time in Ecuador where two species are recognized: P. angulata A. C. Smith and the new P. ecuadorensis Luteyn. These two species are keyed, described, and the new species illustrated.     

Six new species and two new records of (Pteridophyta) from Costa Rica

Six new species of Pteridophyta from Costa Rica are described: Dryopteris flaccisquama A. Rojas, Hypolepis lellingeri A. Rojas, H. moraniana A. Rojas, Melpomene alan-smithii A. Rojas, Selaginella osa?nsis A. Rojas and Terpsichore esquiveliana A. Rojas. Blechnum stoloniferum (Mett. ex E. Fourn.) C. Chr. and Trichomanes micayense Hieron. are new records for the country. Only D. flaccisquama and M. alan-smithii are present outside Costa Rica.     

A new species of Cyllopsis (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) from Costa Rica

Cyllopsis emilia Chacón and Nishida, a new satyrine species, is described from a single male specimen from Cerro de la Muerte, San José, Costa Rica. This new species can be distinguished from other species of Cyllopsis by its white coloration.     

New species of Ericaceae (Vaccinieae) from the Andes of Bolivia and Peru

Eight new Ericaceae (Vaccinieae) from Bolivia and Peru are described, illustrated, and discussed: Orthaea madidiensis, Themistoclesia geniculata, Themistoclesia idiocalyx, Themistoclesia siranensis, Themistoclesia tunquiniensis, Themistoclesia woytkowskii, Thibaudia acacioides, and Thibaudia yungensis.     

A new species of Galipea (Rutaceae) from Nicaragua and Costa Rica

Galipea granulosa from Nicaragua and adjacent Costa Rica is described and illustrated and its similarities toG. longiflora are discussed.     

A phytogeographically significant new species of Jatropha (Euphorbiaceae) from Costa Rica

Jatropha costaricensis is described from Guanacaste, Costa Rica and assigned to sect.Platyphyllae. It is most similar toJ. alamanii of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico, and represents part of a secondary Central American radiation of xeric-adapted Euphorbiaceae. Its geographic relationships indicate a formerly more widespread occurrence of a tropical deciduous flora in Mesoamerica, and it is suggested that xeric range disjunctions here and in adjacent South America may be largely due to climaticallyinduced extinction rather than to long-distance dispersal.
