The frutescent species of the lichen genusCaloplaca are usually united in sect.Thamnoma, but they do not form a natural group. They are derived from different species groups within sect.Gasparrinia from different parts of the world, presumable from species having scleroplectenchymes in cortex and medulla. The algal cells are concentrated between the scleroplectenchymatic strands in large and dense groups, from where medullary plectenchyme extends to the cortex and forms characteristic pseudocyphellae there.—Most of the species seem to be ornithocoprophilous; they grow on rocks along marine coasts where much fog is induced by cold currents.—Caloplaca cribrosa is endemic in Tasmania and New Zealand,C. regalis and the doubtfulC. ambitiosa belong to the antarctic element.C. fragillima from central Chile seems to be propagated by thallus fragments.C. coralloides andC. thamnodes are endemic to California and Baja California respectively.C. cladodes from the Rocky Mountains deviates in many characteristics from the other species i.a. by it different ontogenetic development, reduced spore septum, and cementing amyloid polysaccharides within the scleroplectenchymatic strands. The African species are characterized by their distinctly dorsiventral lobes and usually possess oil cells in some of the paraphyses.Caloplaca bonae-spei, C. fragillima andC. thamnodes are new to science.

Komárek has recently reviewed the various species assigned to the green algal genusNeochloris Starr (Chlorococcales, Chlorococcaceae) and removed those with uninucleate vegetative cells to a new genus,Ettlia. Watanabe & Floyd, unaware ofKomárek's work, also reviewed the species ofNeochloris and distributed them among three genera—Neochloris, Chlorococcopsis gen. nov., andParietochloris gen. nov.—on the basis of details of the covering of the zoospore and the arrangement of the basal bodies of the flagellar apparatus. This paper reconciles these two treatments and makes additional recommendations at the ranks of genus, family, order, and class.  相似文献

TheOmphalotaceae fam. nov., which include the generaOmphalotus andLampteromyces, are defined on the basis of characteristic sesquiterpenes and of their ability to cause white-rot. Anatomical and morphological features of the representatives of these genera support the creation of this new family. The occurrence of pigments, typical of theBoletales, and of cyanophilous spores, indicate membership of theOmphalotaceae in the orderBoletales. Relationships to the other families of this order — especially to thePaxillaceae — are discussed. The possible functional significance of fungal metabolites is considered.

Different stages of megaspore and megasporangial development inSelaginella argentea (Wallich)Spring,S. bigelowii Unerw., andS. kraussiana (Kze.)A. Br. have been seen and studied. Megaspore wall units give positive reactions for polysaccharides and protein in young megaspores, and become the thick and resistant wall typical of the genus only later.—Units forming the exospore and the spaces between units enlarge from widths of 5–10nm early during development up to over 200 nm at pregermination stages. The spaces enlarge first. Initially they are circular and mostly about 70 nm in diameter. Later, spaces toward the inner part of the exospore enlarge more than those near the outer surface. During pregermination, wall spaces range in size from 4 to 50 times the width of units with the larger spaces located near the inner surface. As a result the exospore would be under tension to spring outward during germination when the laesurae are lysed.—A gap in the exospore, shaped like a half-moon in polar sections, forms in equatorial and distal portions of the spore. This gap becomes enormous, three times the volume of the central space plus the mesospore, and is filled with lipids and other nutrients. Late in development, during the period of tapetal cell degeneration, the gap contents are moved into the central space and the gap is closed.—Late in development the mesospore is degraded. Its products, along with gap contents, seem to be added to the contents of the central cavity and appear as reserve storage globules. A primary wall-like endospore is formed during this period, at the inner surface of the exospore. During germination this endospore develops further at its inner surface.—Changes in the size and shape of megasporangia occur independently of the size of megaspores.Megaspore development inSelaginella. The effects of light on the spore germination of a hornwort species,Anthoceros miyabeanus Steph., were investigated. Spores of this species were photoblastic, but their sensitivities to light quality were different. Under either continuous white, red or diffused daylight, more than 80% of the spores germinated, but under blue light none or a few of them germinated. Under continuous far-red light or in total darkness, the spores did not germinate at all.Anthoceros spores required red light irradiation for a very long duration, i.e., over 12–24 hr of red light for saturated germination. However, the spore germination showed clear photo-reversibility by repeated irradiation of red and far-red light. The germination pattern clearly varied with the light quality. There were two fundamental patterns; (1) cell mass type in white or blue light: spores divide before germination, and the sporelings divide frequently and form 1–2 rhizoids soon after germination, and (2) germ tube type in red light: spores germinate without cell division, and the single-cell sporelings elongate without cell division and rhizoid formation.  相似文献

The morphology of spores is an important aspect of yeasts systematic. It is a good thing to state the size, the shape and the ornamentation of these spores; only scanning electron microscopy is able to bring a satisfactory answer. This preliminary work applied toEndomycopsis javanensis (Klöcker)Dekker spores shows that their warty aspect is due to the presence of warts and mamelons and that the width of the equatorial edge varies considerably for a given spore and from one spore to another.

Under solid-state and liquid-state cultivations, the entomopathogenic fungus Verticillium lecanii F091 produced different types of spores. The aerial spores (AS) on cooked rice formed clusters on the tips of conidiophores, while the submerged spores (SS) were dispersed in the medium. The aerial spore appeared relatively uniform in size, which was 6.1 ± 0.9 m long, and 2.2 ± 0.3 m wide. The submerged spore varied in shape and size, with a mean length of 5.0 ± 1.0 m and width of 1.9 ± 0.5 m. Under scanning electron microscopy, the AS had a tendency to have rough, brittle surface characteristics; however, the SS appeared smooth on the surface. These spores were compared in two different germination media. On SMAY (Sabouraud maltose, agar, yeast extract, and neopeptone) coated coverslips, the AS did not show germ tubes until 8 h of incubation; while the SS showed many germ tubes. However, over 90% spore germination ratio was reached for both types of spores at 18-h of incubation. In the liquid medium, the SS germinated rapidly and many spores even produced spores on the spores; while the AS germinated, grew, and branched in the submerged culture gradually, and some sporulated on the tips of the short branches, or on the mycelia until 18 h of incubation. Evidently, the germination, growth patterns of aerial or submerged spores differed greatly under the different culture conditions. The virulence of the pathogen in relation to the type of spore of V. lecanii is discussed.  相似文献

A Bacillus anthracis Sterne pXO1 plasmid-encoded protein designated Cot43 was found in coat extracts of purified spores. Cot43 is a tetratricopeptide repeat domain protein related to those which function as phosphatases in the sporulation phosphorelay and as regulators of competence and pathogenic factors. The synthesis of Cot43 began in the late exponential phase downstream from a sigmaA promoter (as mapped by RACE) and it was present at least until the formation of phase white endospores. There was specificity in the association of Cot43 with B. anthracis spores since Bacillus cereus producing Cot43 from a cloned gene had very little of this protein in spore coat extracts. In addition, Cot43 was synthesized by B. anthracis cells to the same extent in glucose-yeast extract and nutrient sporulation media, but was essentially absent from spores formed in the former. l-histidine is an important germinant for B. anthracis spores in macrophages, Spores produced by a mutant with a disruption of cot43 germinated in response to l-histidine both in vitro and within primary mouse macrophages earlier and more extensively than Sterne strain spores. The germination delay due to the presence of Cot43 would enhance spore survival and thus increase the chances for a successful infection. Sporosarcina halophila forms endospores. Electron micrographs revealed ultrastructural similarity to spores of S. ureae. Spore germination indicated by loss of refractility, darkening, swelling and formation of new vegetative cells was followed by phase contrast light microscopy. To induce spore germination, the endospores needed to be heat avtivated. After activation, they were inoculated into nutrient broth medium supplemented with sea-water. Double concentrated sea-water was found to be optimal for germination. Similar to other bacterial endospores, the spores were found to be resistant to heat and ethanol. An ultraviolet absorbing substance was isolated from suspensions of free spores; it was identified to be pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (DPA) usually present in bacterial spores. DPA was detected in amounts ranging from 5–7% of the spore dry weight; it was not detected in extracts of vegetative cells.Abbreviation DPA 2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylic acid  相似文献

Quinolizidine alkaloids deter the feeding of herbivores (mammals, insects, molluscs), inhibit the growth and the development of bacteria and fungi and inhibit the germination of grass seeds and lettuce. Half-maximal inhibitor concentrations fall in the range between 0.5 and 15mM (= 0.01–0.3%). The actual concentrations of lupin alkaloids in the plant are between 5–200mmol/kg, i.e. much higher than the inhibitory concentrations. Since alkaloid-free lupins have a higher incidence of herbivory and disease, we assume that the biological function of lupin alkaloids is chemical defense besides minor roles as nitrogen transport and nitrogen storage compounds.

Soybean and sunflower oils increased the level of infection of northern jointvetch, Aeschynomene virginica, plants by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f. sp. aeschynomene. Inoculation of seedlings with spore suspensions containing 10% (v:v) soybean oil or 10% sunflower oil resulted in more disease than when inoculated with suspensions of spores in water alone. The lengths of the dew periods required to establish equivalent levels of disease by spore suspensions containing 10% soybean or 10% sunflower oil were approximately 4–8 h less compared to aqueous suspensions. Incubation of spores in 10% soybean oil followed by removal and resuspension in water did not affect the infectivity of spores when compared to spores incubated in aqueous suspensions. Spore germination and appressoria formation were unaffected by either of the oils tested in in vitro assays; however, in in vivo assays, 10% soybean oil and 10% sunflower oil increased spore germination in comparison to spores that were suspended in water.  相似文献

Preservation of algal spores of the green seaweed Ulva fasciata and U. pertusa was enhanced by the addition of ampicillin in f/2 medium at 4°C. The viability of preserved spores was determined by a spore germination assay at various time intervals. The germination rate of U. fasciata remained at 5% to 38% for the first five days, dropping to 1% to 6% on the 10th day of storage with various preservation treatments without ampicillin at 4°C during parameter-selecting experiments. In f/2 medium, 53% of U. fasciata spores were still viable on day 5 and 23% on day 10 at 4°C. By adding 100 μg mL−1 ampicillin to f/2 medium, 90% of the spores were viable at day 40 and 61% after 100 days of storage at 4°C. Spores of U. pertusa had lower preservation rates, with viabilities of 70% at day 40 and 32% at day 100. Algal spore preservation was heavily dependent on the bacterial contamination and subsequent degradation in stock solutions. Handling editor: L. Naselli-Flores  相似文献

Veronica lycica Lehm. is a distinct, diploid member of theVeronica cymbalaria group, endemic in Lycia (S.W. Anatolia). Closely related is the newV. stamatiadae M. Fischer etW. Greuter which is also diploid and seems to be restricted to the small Greek island Ro close to the South coast of Lycia. The chromosome numbers for both species are reported for the first time (2n = 18).

Within agaric fungi whorled (multiple) clamps have been described so far only for the homothallicCoprinus myceliocephalus Lange. The new speciesCoprinus verticillatus Schulz-Weddigen (ined.) develops fertile mycelia which form septae without or with 1–5 clamps. Stronger hyphae tend to branch dichotomously. Most cells of the vegetative system contain many nuclei. Though single spore cultures remain sterile, they can develop multiple clamps, too. Moreover, very young mycelia produce a special type of oidiophores. According to its mating interactions a bipolar pattern characterizes the heterothallicC. verticillatus.

In contrast to the well-known blue-green algal containing lichens several green algal containing lichens, belonging to very different genera, show regular connections to free-living or ± lichenized blue-green algae, mainlyStigonema. Most of these lichens have squamulose thalli. This lichen-algal relationship, regarded as cyanotrophy, may be either facultative or obligate. Some of the species occur only on very poor, acidic rocks onStigonema, while they occur independent ofStigonema in high nutrient biotops. Obligate species cover the blue-green algae with hyphae and some of these species cover the algae so extensively that one can call these connections paracephalodia. — Two species and one variety are new to science from the mainly Himalayan genusBryonora. They occur in high elevations in Nepal and are cyanotrophic.Bryonora selenospora has thick, halfmoon-shaped to slightly twisted ascospores. The other two new taxa areB. reducta andB. rhypariza var.cyanotropha. There are several other cyanotrophic lichen taxa besides the ones described here. They will be introduced at a later occasion.

A report is given on about 1000 specimens of 28 species ofPhorinae and their occurrence on 12 species ofUmbelliferae. Collections were made in a variety of habitats ranging from the German North Sea coast up to altitudes of 2500 m in the Western Alps. The morphology of the mouth-parts of the flies and their behaviour on the umbels are discussed briefly. No specific adaptations exist between Phorid flies and the visited umbels; their relationship is mutualistic. Climate and altitude have a greater influence on frequency and diversity of these visitors than the host-plants themselves. Visitors frequency and diversity increases with altitude.

Cd-tolerant arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi from heavy-metal polluted soils   总被引:13,自引:1,他引:13
Spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi were isolated from two heavy-metal polluted soils in France via trap culture with leek (Allium porrum L.). Preliminary identification showed that the predominant spore type of both cultures (P2 and Cd40) belongs to the Glomus mosseae group. Their sensitivity to cadmium was compared to a laboratory reference strain (G. mosseae) by in vitro germination tests with cadmium nitrate solutions at a range of concentrations (0 to 100 mg L–1) as well as extracts from a metal-polluted and unpolluted soils. Both cultures of AM fungi from heavy-metal polluted soils were more tolerant to cadmium than the G. mosseae reference strain. The graphically estimated EC50 was 0.8 mg L–1 Cd (concentration added to the test device) for G. mosseae and 7 mg L–1 for P2 culture, corresponding to effective Cd concentrations of approximately 50–70 g L–1 and 200–500 g L–1, respectively. The extract of the metal-polluted soil P2 decreased germination of spores from the reference G. mosseae but not from P2 culture. However, the extracts of two unpolluted soils with different physico-chemical characteristics did not affect G. mosseae, whereas germination of P2 spores was markedly decreased in the presence of one of the extracts. These results indicate a potential adaptation of AM fungi to elevated metal concentrations in soil. The tested spores may be considered as metal-tolerant ecotypes. Spore germination results in presence of soil extracts show the difficulty of assessing the ecotoxic effect of metals on AM fungi without considering other soil factors that may interfere in spore germination and hyphal extension.  相似文献

Summary The effect of different concentrations of CO2 on the germination of conidiospores of Aspergillus niger A 5 has been studied using Pardee's buffer mixtures which maintain constant CO2 tensions. The beneficial effect of CO2 on germination is maximum at 0.5% CO2 concentration, when 70–90% of the spores germinate within 6 hours, whereas in controls with air containing 0.03% CO2 there is only 15–20% germination at 6 hours. At higher CO2 concentrations this beneficial effect of CO2 on germination diminishes and at 3% there is a complete inhibition of spore germination. The spore density and the ph of the medium have a noticeable effect on germination rates in presence of 0.5% CO2. The germination rates decrease at spore densities higher than 5 · 105/ml and at a ph of 6.8.Communication No. 431.  相似文献

The highly specialized, two-celled hairs fringing the anthers ofCyclanthera pedata (L.)Schrad. and its relatives aid in pollination by producing a glue which sticks the coarse pollen grains onto insect visitors. This was proven by direct observations, confirming older assumptions. The adhesive is extruded from the big basal cell which bursts upon the slightest touch to the small top cell.—Turgor and, possibly, swelling pressure of the sticky material, are responsible for plasmoptysis and ejaculation. Cell contraction is due to tension of cuticular clips and, to a minor degree, to elasticity of the pectinic wall. A preformed apical dehiscence line disrupts when the top cell is bent aside.—The anthers hairs of a flower develop synchronously. From light and electron microscopic observations, the adhesive appears not to be a product of internal secretion. It originates from the endopolyploid giant nucleus of the basal cell, which finally degenerates by liquefying and swelling. The numerous peculiar elaioplasts apparently do not contribute to the hair's function.—The anther hairs are homologous to, and possibly have evolved from the so-called explosion hairs occurring on the green parts of manyCucurbitaceae.
