ABSTRACT. The circadian flight activity of female Aedes aegypti (L.) changes after insemination and during the course of the gonotrophic cycle. Virgin females attain a high level of spontaneous activity within 3–4 days of adult emergence; in LD 12:12 there are peaks of activity at the beginning and end of the light phase. Inseminated females are less than 20% as active as virgins, but exhibit a similar daily pattern. After blood-feeding, inseminated females become almost totally inactive for about 48h and then show a unimodal pattern of activity which is consistent with oviposition behaviour; after oviposition they revert to the basic inseminated pattern and level of activity. Blood-fed virgin females continue to show a high level of spontaneous activity. It is suggested that insemination has the general effect of raising the threshold for activity and that it is necessary before blood-fed females can switch to the gravid behaviour programme. Blood-fed uninseminated females thus continue with behaviour which will maximize the probability of insemination.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The pattern of circadian flight activity in female Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus was modified after insemination or injection with an extract of male accessory glands. The changes were linked with an apparent alteration in the timing of one of the major components of the rhythm. In LD 12:12, virgin females were highly active at 'dusk' and 'dawn' and in the latter part of the dark phase; inseminated females were less active at 'dusk' and 'dawn' and were active in the first half of the dark phase. In DD, there were two peaks in each cycle, the initial (evening) peak occurring at the same time after all treatments; the peaks were approximately 12 h apart in virgin females, but only 6–7 h apart in females which had been inseminated or injected with accessory gland extract. The accessory gland substance (pheromone) also appeared to cause a progressive increase in activity. These induced changes are consistent with a switch to host-seeking behaviour, which, under natural conditions, leads to a peak of biting in the middle of the night.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In both virgin and inseminated female Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say, circadian flight-activity has two major components: evening (E) and morning (M) in virgins, and evening (E) and night (N) in inseminated females. These components probably represent the activity of constituent oscillators of the underlying pacemaker system. In DD (constant dark) the E and M peaks are approximately 12 h apart in virgins, the E and N peaks 6–7 h apart in inseminated females. Entrainment to regimes between LD 6:18 and 18:6 appears to have only small effects on the relative position of these components, and after a change to DD they quickly relax towards a common phase-relation. Entrainment to LD 12:12 followed by release into DD or constant dim light (intensities 0.005-5 be) showed that light has a differential effect on the components, initially increasing the period of the E component more than that of the apparently more stable M and N components. Thus with increasing light intensity a bimodal cycle fuses into a unimodal cycle. Light also affected the level of activity, causing big increases in the activity of both virgin and inseminated females at 0.05 lx, but depressing activity, at least initially, at 5 lx. These results indicate that, under natural conditions, moonlight may have big effects, both on the level of activity and on the underlying circadian pacemaker.  相似文献

Issues of male fertility must be addressed to support the development of a sterile insect technique (SIT) programme for the control of Aedes albopictus Skuse (Diptera: Culicidae) populations on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. The mating ability of a local strain of Ae. albopictus was tested using several batches of females and different cage sizes under laboratory conditions. Individual males were able to inseminate up to 14 females at an average of 9.5 females per male when exposed to 20 females over 7 days. Males filled between three and 27 spermathecal capsules at an average of 15.5 capsules per male. The average number of females inseminated per male was 5.3 when two virgin females were introduced to one male and replaced every day for 12 days, and 8.6 when 10 virgin females were introduced to one male and replaced every day for 14 days. A continuous decrease in the number of both inseminated females and filled spermathecal capsules was observed over time, until no mating occurred after 14 days. The high number of females inseminated by one male and the duration of male activity may have strong implications for SIT control of mosquitoes.  相似文献

The effects of gamma HCH/dieldrin resistance genes on flight activity and mating competitiveness were investigated in males from backcrossed strains of Anopheles gambiae Giles and An.stephensi Liston. Activity of males and virgin females of both species, as recorded in an acoustic actograph, occurred mainly at dusk (the E peak). The activity pattern of An.gambiae males was not affected by resistance genes; in mating competition and predator avoidance experiments, however, RR males were less successful than RS males which were less successful than SS males. The activity pattern of An.stephensi differed from An.gambiae in that the E peaks of RR males and females in a gradual dusk regime were out of synchrony with those of SS and RS, the E peaks of RR occurring slightly later. Thus, RR males and females tended to mate assortatively in mate competition experiments. When a sudden dusk regime was substituted for the gradual dusk regime, activity of RR An.stephensi became synchronized with SS and RS activity, but in mating competition experiments RR still tended to mate assortatively. Estimates of male competitiveness, together with previously-obtained estimates of female fitness, were included in population genetics models. Computer simulations showed that the frequency of resistance in populations of An.gambiae and An.stephensi should decrease in the absence of insecticide at a rate comparable with known field reversions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In a laboratory study of adult carrot fly activity, observations were made on caged populations and on individuals isolated in actographs. In cages in LD 12:12, feeding, oviposition, flight and possibly mating were all rhythmic. Peak feeding occurred within 1 h from lights-on and peak oviposition and flight 10–12 h later. Mating frequency increased slightly in the latter half of the light phase. In actographs in LD 12:12, peak activity also occurred 10–12 h after lights-on. Activity increased with age up to at least 5 days old, independently of the effects of starvation, and by day 5 males were approximately 3 times and females 8 times more active than on the day of emergence. Overall, males were approximately 1.4 times more active than females. Females isolated in actographs for 4 days in continuous dim light showed peaks of activity at intervals of approximately 22.5 h, and activity therefore appears to be a true circadian rhythm. In continuous bright light the activity of females became arrhythmic.  相似文献

A virgin ant queen has only one opportunity in her lifetime to realize her reproductive fitness when she leaves her nest for a mating flight. After successful mating she sheds her wings, excavates a nest and starts laying eggs to initiate her own colony. Here we report the results of our study on two related species of Camponotus ants - day active Camponotus paria and night active Camponotus compressus - aimed at investigating (i) if there exist inter-species differences in the activity and phototactic behaviors of males and queens, (ii) whether these behaviors in the queen change after mating, and (iii) whether the activity rhythm of queens changes with age. We find that while activity profiles differ between C. paria and C. compressus virgin males and queens, such differences in queens disappear after mating. Once mated, the activity rhythm of queens shows little change with age; the rhythm in virgin queens, on the other hand, changes considerably. As virgins, C. paria queens are positively phototactic, while C. compressus queens are negatively phototactic. After mating, C. paria queens become less phototactic, particularly during the subjective night, while C. compressus queens remain negatively phototactic. These results indicate that there are considerable differences in the activity and phototactic behaviors of virgin queens of the two related species of Camponotus ants. Most of these differences disappear after mating, which suggests that these behaviors may have evolved primarily for the proper execution of pre-mating events.  相似文献

After mating, females may experience a decline in sexual receptivity and attractiveness that may be associated with changes in the production and emission of sex pheromones. In some cases, these changes are produced by chemical substances or structures (e.g., mating plugs) produced by males as a strategy to avoid or reduce sperm competition. In scorpions, sex pheromones may be involved in finding potential mates and starting courtship. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the males of Urophonius brachycentrus, a species that produces a mating plug, use chemical communication (sex pheromones) to detect, localize, and discriminate females according to their mating status (virgin or inseminated), aided by chemical signaling. We also explored the effect of extracting of the mating plug on chemical communication and mating acceptance. We used Y‐maze olfactometers with different stimuli to analyze male choice and exploration time. To evaluate mating acceptance, we measured the attractiveness and receptivity of females of different mating status. We found that chemical communication occurs through volatile pheromones, but not contact pheromones. Males equally preferred sites with virgin or inseminated females with removed mating plug. In turn, females with these mating statuses were more attractive and receptive for males than inseminated females. This study suggests that the mating plug significantly affects female chemical attractiveness with an effect on volatile pheromones and decreasing sexual mating acceptance of females. The decline in the female's sexual receptivity is a complex process that may respond to several non‐exclusive mechanisms imposed by males and strategically modulated by females.  相似文献

Summary In insect parasitoids, the mating structure of the population depends on the emergence pattern of adults and on their behaviour after emergence. In order to study some aspects of these characteristics in four species of egg parasitoid of the genusTrichogramma, laboratory experiments using automatic video analysis are performed. Adult emergence is concentrated in the morning, with an earlier time for males. The variability of the time of emergence is under genetic control. The relationships between the emergence pattern and the locomotor activity are considered by measuring individually: first, the delay between the emergence and the first locomotion which is significantly greater in females than in males and, second, the activity of newly emerged males, which is maximum at the time of the emergence of females. The locomotor activity is influenced by mating; mated females are much more active than virgin ones, mated males are less active than virgin ones. The adaptive values of the rhythmicity of emergence and of protandry are discussed together with their relationship with the patterns of locomotor activity. The results are also considered with respect to mating strategies in insect parasitoids; they actually support the hypothesis of mating occurring principally among individuals native to the same host patch inTrichogramma species.  相似文献

Lycosa tarentula is a ground-living spider that inhabits a burrow where it awaits the appearance of prey or conspecifics. In this study, circadian rhythms of locomotor activity were examined as well as the ocular pathway of entrainment. Thirty-three adult virgin females were examined under constant darkness (DD); all of them exhibited robust circadian rhythms of locomotor activity with a period averaging 24.1h. Fourteen of these spiders were studied afterwards under an LD 12:12 cycle; they usually entrained to in the first or second day, even when the light intensity was as low as 1 lx. During the LD cycle, locomotor activity was generally restrained to the darkness phase, although several animals showed a small amount of diurnal activity. Ten males were also examined under LD; they were also nocturnal, but were much more active than the females. Seven females were examined under constant light (LL); under this they became arrhythmic. Except for the anterior median eyes (OMAs), all the eyes were capable of entraining the locomotor activity to an LD cycle. These results demonstrate that under laboratory conditions and low light intensities locomotor activity of Lycosa tarentula is circadian and in accordance with Aschoff's 'rule'. Only OMAs are unable to entrain the rhythm; the possible localization of circadian clock is therefore discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Pseudaletia unipuncta (Haw.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) virgin females, maintained at either 10 or 25d?C under LD 12:12 or 16:8 h, started calling at different ages. For a given photoperiod, calling was initiated 11 days later at 10d?C than at 25d?C, while for a given temperature, calling at LD 12:12 h was 3–4 days later than at LD 16:8 h. At 10d?C 50.8% of females did not call within 35 days at LD 12:12 h compared with 30.8% at LD 16:8 h. Calling started earlier in the scotophase at 10d?C than at 25d?C and at LD 16:8 h than at LD 12:12 h. Under all treatments calling generally advanced on successive nights. The time elapsed between the mean onset time of calling and the mid-scotophase was relatively constant under both photoperiod conditions at 25d?C, but at 10d?C was more variable. The mean time spent calling increased significantly with calling age but did not differ significantly between the four experimental conditions tested. Older (15 days) females transferred from 10d?C, LD 16:8 h to 25d?C at either LD 163 or 12:12 h, required less time to initiate calling than younger (5 days) ones. Those transferred from 10d?C, LD 12:12 h took the same time, regardless of their age at the time of the transfer. Females experiencing either a decrease or increase in daylength as well as a temperature increase, required respectively more or less time to initiate calling, compared with individuals that only experienced an increase in temperature. If temperature was the only parameter changed females that initiated calling soon after the transfer immediately adjusted their calling periodicity to prevailing conditions. When both temperature and photoperiod were altered, it took several days before calling periodicity adjusted to the new regime. The ecological implications of temperature and photoperiodic conditions on the possible autumn migration of P. unipuncta are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. The diel pattern of locomotor activity in the codling moth Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was investigated in the laboratory, using a computer-based infra-red actograph. The level of locomotor activity varied with sex and age. On the day of emergence, females were more active than males, but on days 2, 4, 6 and 12 males were approximately twice as active as females. Males reached their highest activity on day 4 and females on day 12. Both sexes were most active at dusk. Their activity patterns were fitted to a set of polynomial regression models. Treatment with 400 p.p.m. of Juvenile Hormone mimic, fenoxycarb, stimulated locomotor activity and provoked a marked activity peak at dawn in both virgin and mated females. A similar treatment with the ecdysone agonist tebufenozide showed a neutral effect on the locomotor activity of females. Possible implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the physiology of the moth and to its dispersal behaviour.  相似文献

The research presented in this paper provides an insight into the behavioral ecology of mountain hares on heather moorland in the Lammermuir Hills of southeast Scotland. We examine the seasonal and diel activity patterns using camera traps over a period of 12 months. The rate of camera detections was calculated for the different divisions of the 24‐hr cycle (daylight, dusk, night, and dawn). During autumn and winter (October–February), the activity pattern was crepuscular with greater activity at dusk than at dawn. Daylight activity was relatively low, and there was a regular pattern of small peaks of activity during the night. In spring and summer (March–September), peaks of crepuscular activity remained evident but daylight activity was much more prevalent than during autumn and winter, and night activity was lower. We discuss the problematic definition of twilight and present an explanation for seasonal changes in the pattern of diel activity that is linked to the reproductive cycle of the mountain hare.  相似文献

Bushbuck density, activity cycles, and ranging patterns on the Mweya Peninsula have been determined by continuous observation of individually recognizable animals. Individuals were followed for periods of 2 to 12 h, and observations were continued at night with the aid of a Starlight Scope image intensifier. The density of this population of bushbuck is very high compared to those reported using more standard censusing techniques. Home range size is larger (15-3-35-2 ha) for adult and subadult males than for females and immatures. Sex ratios show a preponderance of adult females, as has been reported for other populations. Contrary to most published accounts, these bushbuck are no more active at night than during the day; rather, they exhibit cycles of activity with a periodicity of 2–5 h. A crepuscular peak of movement is, however, apparent. Examination of individual home ranges and of ranging patterns indicates that this crepuscular activity peak is connected with a complete disjunction of areas utilized at night and during the day. Bushbuck move out of thickets into patches of grassland at dusk, returning to thickets before dawn. Other differences between nocturnal and diurnal activity include an increase in the relative amount of grazing at night. Possible reasons for these phenomena, in particular the probable role of predation, are discussed.  相似文献

In group-living Malagasy primates (Lemuriformes), certain demographic and morphological traits deviate both from theoretical expectations derived from sexual selection theory and from patterns in better-known anthropoid primates. Lemurs lack sexual dimorphism in body and canine size and live in relatively small multimale-multifemale groups with, on average, even adult sex ratios, despite a polygynous mating system. In addition, the majority of gregarious lemurs are cathemeral, that is, they are regularly active both day and night. The social system of cathemeral lemurs has been considered an adaptation to their activity pattern. If so, groups should consist of multiple pairs that aggregate during diurnal activity and range separately at night in response to predation and infanticide risk, respectively. Moreover, mating privileges should exist between pair partners. We tested this hypothesis with data collected on two groups of wild redfronted lemurs in western Madagascar during 1023 focal animal hours spanning 4 months including the mating season. In addition, data on spatial relations were collected on 12 nights. We found no differences in group cohesion between day and night and no behavioural evidence for multiple male-female pairs. Instead, one male in each group monopolized social interactions with all females. However, females copulated with all resident males, although most often with the central male. Thus, basic predictions of the cathemerality hypothesis are unsupported. Multiple matings and indications of oestrous synchrony can be viewed as female counterstrategies against infanticide, whereas reproductive strategies of redfronted lemur males remain obscure. Felids are generally considered to be crepuscular and nocturnal in their activity, but few studies have attempted to analyze the variability of their activity patterns. We studied the daily activity of the Iriomote cat Prionailurus iriomotensis by radio-tracking on Iriomote Island, Japan. The general activity patterns of Iriomote cats showed slightly prevailing activity during dark periods of the day with particular peaks at dawn and dusk or during the early hours of the night. However, these patterns were clearly dependent on the sex and reproductive status of the cat. Peaks of cats’ activity coincided with those of their main prey. On average, the cats were active for thirteen hours per day. During the mating season, the rhythm of activity in males followed that of breeding females, but not that of non-breeding ones. Males exhibited 11% higher total daily activity and longer active bouts during the mating period than in the remainder of the year. Breeding females had additional mid-day activity peak during the nursing period, but their total time of activity per day was 16% lower than in the period of kittens’ independence. Their active bouts were shorter and more frequent during nursing than at other times. These results suggest that lactating females perform frequent movements to and from the den site to care for kittens. During the non-nursing period, females increased their activity, possibly in response to lowered prey abundance and the need of intensive foraging to recover after lactation. Seasonal and sexual variation of activity patterns in the Iriomote cats confirmed the existence of different reproductive strategies of males and females of these solitary carnivores.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Mating behaviour in the Anopheles gambiae complex was studied in the laboratory, using an infra-red TV system to make observations in the 'dark'. Maximum fertilization occurred when both sexes were at least 2 days old. In LD 12:12 most mating took place in the first hour of the dark phase. At this time, the males had erect fibrillae on the antennae and showed the maximum response to an artificial female flight tone, approaching, landing-on and attempting to clasp the sound source. The cycle of fibrillar erection and of responsiveness to sound continued in constant dark. Males did not appear to discriminate on contact, between their own and other species. Previously mated females actively resisted copulation, but, when tethered, were unable to prevent the deposition of further internal mating plugs. Free-flying, previously inseminated, females prevented the males from depositing internal plugs, but not from ejaculating and depositing external plugs. The differences between A.gambiae and the better known Stegomyia mosquitoes appear to be related to their different habits, A.gambiae males being less likely to encounter females of other species or inseminated females of their own species at the restricted time and place of mating.  相似文献

Circannual and circadian activity patterns of American mink Neovison vison were studied in a fishpond area in northern Germany. Fourteen mink were radiotracked, nine of them (five males, four females) for at least 6 months, some of them even up to 21 months. Both sexes have reduced activity rates in winter months and showed a considerable increase of activity during mating season (March). In summer months—during the pup raising period—female activity continued to be high. Male mink, on the other hand, were less active with the exception of August and September. During this time, dispersal of juveniles takes place with resident males increasingly having to defend their territories. Circadian activity rhythms differed markedly between sexes. All investigated females exhibited a perennial diurnal pattern. Female activity during twilight and night was significantly lower than during daylight. Three investigated male mink showed a typical nocturnal course throughout the year. Daylight activity of these animals was very low, increased during dusk and dawn activity rates and stayed at a higher level during the night. Two males behaved arrhythmic; they did not prefer any time of the day for activity. The observed temporal strategies were discussed in context of intra-sexual territoriality, sexual dimorphism in body size and different environmental factors.  相似文献

Fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster females display rhythmic egg-laying under 12:12?h light/dark (LD) cycles which persists with near 24?h periodicity under constant darkness (DD). We have shown previously that persistence of this rhythm does not require the neurons expressing pigment dispersing factor (PDF), thought to be the canonical circadian pacemakers, and proposed that it could be controlled by peripheral clocks or regulated/triggered by the act of mating. We assayed egg-laying behaviour of wild-type Canton S (CS) females under LD, DD and constant light (LL) conditions in three different physiological states; as virgins, as females allowed to mate with males for 1?day and as females allowed to mate for the entire duration of the assay. Here, we report the presence of a circadian rhythm in egg-laying in virgin D. melanogaster females. We also found that egg-laying behaviour of 70 and 90% females from all the three male presence/absence protocols follows circadian rhythmicity under DD and LL, with periods ranging between 18 and 30?h. The egg-laying rhythm of all virgin females synchronized to LD cycles with a peak occurring soon after lights-off. The rhythm in virgins was remarkably robust with maximum number of eggs deposited immediately after lights-off in contrast to mated females which show higher egg-laying during the day. These results suggest that the egg-laying rhythm of D. melanogaster is endogenously driven and is neither regulated nor triggered by the act of mating; instead, the presence of males results in reduction in entrainment to LD cycles.  相似文献
