I assessed the impact of both vertebrate and invertebrate predators on a lotic benthic community in a 1-month-long experiment, using enclosures containing cobble/gravel bottoms, with large-mesh netting that allowed invertebrates to drift freely. Brown trout (Salmo trutta) and leeches (Erpobdella octoculata) were used as predators and four treatments were tested: a predator-free control, leeches only, trout only, and leeches and trout together. A density of 26.7 leeches/m2 (20 leeches/enclosure) and 1.3 trout/m2 (one trout per enclosure) was stocked into the enclosures. The total biomass of invertebrate prey was significantly lower in the trout and trout plus leech treatments than in the leech and control treatments, which were due to strong negative effects of trout on Gammarus. On the individual prey taxon level, both trout and leeches affected the abundance of Asellus , Baetis and Ephemerella, whereas the abundance of Gammarus was only affected by trout, and the abundance of Orthocladiinae and Limnephilidae was only affected by leeches. In the treatment with trout and leeches together, the abundance of Ephemerella and Baetis was higher than when trout or leeches were alone, which was probably due to predator interactions. Leeches and trout had no effects on prey immigration but did affect per capita emigration rates. Both trout and leeches indirectly increased periphyton biomass in enclosures, probably due to their strong effects on grazers. Both trout and leeches were size-selective predators, with trout selecting large prey, and leeches selecting small prey. Size-selective predation by trout and leeches affected the size structure of five commonly consumed prey taxa. Trout produced prey populations of small sizes owing to consumption of large prey as well as increased emigration out of enclosures by these large prey. Leech predation produced prey assemblages of larger size owing to consumption and increased emigration of small prey. These results suggest that in lotic habits, predatory invertebrates can be as strong interactors as vertebrate predators. Received: 23 June 1997 / Accepted: 4 May 1998  相似文献

We used an invaded stream fish community in southern Chile to experimentally test whether the diversity of exotic species affects their competitive impact on a native species. In artificial enclosures an established invasive, rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and a potential invader, Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, reduced the growth rate of native peladilla, Aplochiton zebra, by the same amount. In enclosures with both exotic salmonids, the growth rates of all three species were the same as in single exotic treatments. While neither species identity nor diversity appeared to affect competitive interactions in this experiment, the impact of salmonid diversity may vary with the type of interspecific interaction and/or the species identity of the exotics. Our experiment links two prominent concepts in invasion biology by testing whether the result of invasional meltdown, an increase in the diversity of exotic species, affects their impact through interspecific competition, the mechanism invoked by the biotic resistance hypothesis.  相似文献

To describe comparative population genetic structure of the Chilean silverside Basilichthys microlepidotus and the catfish Trichomycterus areolatus, four rivers and three sites within each river were investigated by the analysis of haplotype polymorphisms of the mitochondrial Control Region. For both species, analyses revealed significant differentiation among rivers and low differences within rivers. However, the species differ in haplotype composition; individuals of B. microlepidotus shared some haplotypes in all four rivers, while individuals of T. areolatus showed a different haplotype composition in most rivers. This difference may be explained by the different ecological features of the species. Assuming that both silversides and catfish were present before the separation of the rivers, B. microlepidotus migrated after river isolation, probably using coastal water, while T. areolatus has probably never migrated between these rivers. The long times that the studied rivers have been separated should be taken into account in future conservation plans for the freshwater fish of Chile.  相似文献

We report two new exotic introduced isopods in Chile: Halophiloscia couchii of the family Halophilosciidae and Niambia capensis of the family Platyarthridae. This report provides first evidence of the presence of these species in the Southeastern Pacific. These species were found in several salt marshes and beaches spanning nearly 2000?km of the Chilean coast. With the data reported here, the percentage of exotic oniscidean isopods in Chile is 28%.  相似文献

1. The availability of complex habitats such as macrophytes may be vital in determining the outcomes of interactions between introduced predators and native prey. Introduced brown trout (Salmo trutta) have impacted numerous small native freshwater fishes in the southern hemisphere, but the potential role of complex habitats in determining the direct outcomes of brown trout – native fish interactions has not been experimentally evaluated. 2. An in‐lake enclosure experiment was used to evaluate the importance of structurally complex habitats in affecting the direct impacts of brown trout on a threatened galaxiid fish. Five Galaxias auratus and a single brown trout were added to enclosures containing one of three different habitat types (artificial macrophytes, rocks and bare silt substrate). The experiment also had control enclosures without brown trout. Habitat‐dependence of predation risk was assessed by analysis of G. auratus losses to predation, and stomach contents of remaining fish were analysed to determine if brown trout directly affect the feeding of G. auratus and whether this is also habitat‐dependent. 3. Predation risk of G. auratus differed significantly between habitat types, with the highest mortality in enclosures with only bare silt substrate and the lowest in enclosures containing artificial macrophytes. This result highlights the importance of availability of complex habitats for trout – native fish interactions and suggests that increasing habitat degradation and loss in fresh waters may exacerbate the direct impacts of introduced predators. 4. Stomach contents analyses were restricted to fish in enclosures with artificial macrophytes and rocks, as most fish were consumed in enclosures with brown trout and only bare silt substrate. These analyses suggest that brown trout do not directly affect the feeding of G. auratus in complex habitats, but it is still unknown whether its feeding is reduced if complex habitats are unavailable.  相似文献

  1. Blueberry is one of the most relevant buzz-pollinated crops worldwide and Chile is the most important global producer of fresh blueberries during wintertime in the Northern Hemisphere. Thousands of exotic Bombus terrestris are imported from Europe to pollinate blueberries. However, no study has investigated the performance of the native Chilean fauna to pollinate blueberry or other crops. Therefore, we aimed to compare the performance of native Chilean floral visitors with managed visitors to pollinate highbush blueberry.
  2. Per-visit pollination performance (stigmatic pollen deposition) and floral visitation were measured and the presence of sonication behaviour of flower visitors was evaluated for five cultivars in two blueberry orchards located in southern Chile.
  3. Floral visitors showed a preference for one or more blueberry cultivars, instead of visiting all cultivars equally. Floral visits with sonication deposited more conspecific pollen on stigmas than visits without sonication. Some native sonicating bees (Cadeguala and Bombus), especially Cadeguala occidentalis, were efficient pollen vectors of blueberry and better pollinators than honeybees (5.8 times more pollen transferred) similar to that of the managed bee B. terrestris.
  4. The results indicate that some Chilean native bee species, especially those with sonication behaviour, can provide pollination service to highbush blueberry crops.

SUMMARY 1. The impact of the introduced omnivorous signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on trout fry, macroinvertebrates and algae was evaluated in a brown water stream in southern Sweden using in situ enclosures. We also examined the gut content of all surviving crayfish in the enclosures. Two crayfish densities in addition to a control without crayfish were used in replicate enclosures (1.26 m2) in a 1‐month experiment. Additionally, 20 trout fry (Salmo trutta) were stocked in each enclosure to assess the effects of crayfish on trout survival and growth. 2. Detritus was the most common food item in crayfish guts. Animal fragments were also frequent while algae and macrophytes were scarcer. Crayfish exuviae were found in crayfish guts, but the frequency of cannibalism was low. 3. Trout survival in enclosures was positively related to water velocity but was unaffected by crayfish. 4. Total invertebrate biomass and taxon richness were lower in crayfish treatments. The biomass of all predatory invertebrate taxa was reduced but only three of six non‐predatory taxa were reduced in the crayfish treatments. 5. Epiphytic algal biomass (measured as chlorophyll a, on plastic strips) was not related to crayfish density, whereas the biomass of epilithic algae (measured as chlorophyll a) was enhanced by high water velocity and high crayfish density. The latter was possibly mediated via improved light and nutrient conditions, as active crayfish re‐suspend and/or remove detritus and senescent algal cells during periods of low water velocity. 6. We conclude that the introduced signal crayfish may affect stream communities directly and indirectly. Invaded communities will have reduced macroinvertebrate taxon richness and the signal crayfish will replace vulnerable invertebrate predators such as leeches. In streams that transport large amounts of sediment or organic matter, a high density of crayfish is likely to enhance benthic algal production through physical activity rather than via trophic effects.  相似文献

1. We examined indirect, community‐level interactions in a stream that contained non‐native brown trout (Salmo trutta Linnaeus), native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis Mitchill) and native slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus Richardson). Our objectives were to examine benthic invertebrate composition and prey selection of fishes (measured by total invertebrate dry mass, dry mass of individual invertebrate taxa and relative proportion of invertebrate taxa in the benthos and diet) among treatments (no fish, juvenile brook trout alone, juvenile brown trout alone, sculpin with brook trout and sculpin with brown trout). 2. We assigned treatments to 1 m2 enclosures/exclosures placed in riffles in Valley Creek, Minnesota, and conducted six experimental trials. We used three designs of fish densities (addition of trout to a constant number of sculpin with unequal numbers of trout and sculpin; addition of trout to a constant number of sculpin with equal numbers of trout and sculpin; and replacement of half the sculpin with an equal number of trout) to investigate the relative strength of interspecific versus intraspecific interactions. 3. Presence of fish (all three species, alone or in combined‐species treatments) was not associated with changes in total dry mass of benthic invertebrates or shifts in relative abundance of benthic invertebrate taxa, regardless of fish density design. 4. Brook trout and sculpin diets did not change when each species was alone compared with treatments of both species together. Likewise, we did not find evidence for shifts in brown trout or sculpin diets when each species was alone or together. 5. We suggest that native brook trout and non‐native brown trout fill similar niches in Valley Creek. We did not find evidence that either species had an effect on stream communities, potentially due to high invertebrate productivity in Valley Creek.  相似文献

In Chilean Patagonia relatively pristine aquatic environments are being modified by the introduction of exotic salmonids, initially through their deliberate release for sport fishing since the early twentieth century, and more recently via the accidental escape from fish farms. There is therefore a need to reliably distinguish between naturally reproducing and fugitive salmonids associated with the Chilean salmonid farming industry, the second largest in the world. We tested the ability of stable isotope analysis (SIA) and analysis of scale growth profiles to discriminate between farmed and free-living salmonids sampled around the Island of Chiloé. Juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from aquaculture facilities were significantly more enriched in δ15N and lipid-corrected δ13C than river-caught individuals. Scale growth slopes during the first year in freshwater were significantly higher in farmed than in wild-caught rainbow trout, indicating faster somatic growth under hatchery conditions. Stable isotopes analysis classified 94% of juvenile Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout to their correct farm or free-living groups. Our results, therefore, can help to elucidate the origin and spread of exotic invasive salmonids in Chile, and address one of the biggest threats to native freshwater fishes in Patagonia and other temperate zones of the Southern Hemisphere.  相似文献

In many species of mammals, adults play an important role in influencing the survival and/or reproduction of juveniles. Adult males could have a negative effect on population density when their absence becomes a limiting factor in female fertilization. We tested the hypotheses that the absence of overwintering males (adult males) reduces the population growth rate through a delay in the onset of reproductive activity of Cohort 1 females in Calomys venustus populations. The study was carried out in two control and two experimental enclosures (0.25 ha). Adult males were removed after their offspring were born. Weekly trapping sessions were carried out from spring to autumn. To estimate population growth rates (λ), apparent survival (ϕ) and seniority probability (γ) were estimated using capture–mark-recapture models. Models were constructed with these two parameters and recapture probability (p) constrained to vary as a function of time, enclosure and/or treatment. We derived estimates of population growth rates through the estimates of ϕ and γ. The best models for ϕ and γ did not show a treatment effect. Variability between the four enclosures was greater than between control and experimental enclosures. Enclosures had different growth rates at the beginning of the study but were equaled at the end. Temporal variation in population growth rates was a result of temporal variation of γ. The two controls showed the highest growth rates earlier in time. The results did not support the hypothesis tested in this study. It seems that the number of overwintering males do not affect the population growth rate.  相似文献

Selection on Arctic charr generated by competition from brown trout   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
We experimentally explored population‐ and individual‐level effects on Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) resulting from resource competition with its common European competitor, the brown trout (Salmo trutta). At the population level, we compared performance of the two species in their natural sympatric state with that of Arctic charr in allopatry. At the individual level, we established selection gradients for morphological traits of Arctic charr in allopatric and in sympatric conditions. We found evidence for interspecific competition likely by interference at the population level when comparing differences in average performance between treatments. The growth and feeding rates did not differ significantly between allopatric and sympatric Arctic charr despite lower charr densities (substitutive design) in sympatric enclosures indicating that inter‐ and intraspecific competition are of similar strength. The two species showed distinct niche segregation in sympatry, and brown trout grew faster than Arctic charr. Arctic charr did not expand their niche in allopatry, indicating that the two species compete to a limited degree for the same resources and that interference may suppress the growth of charr in sympatric enclosures. At the individual level, however, we found directional selection in sympatric enclosures against individual Arctic charr with large head and long fins and against individuals feeding on zoobenthos rather than zooplankton indicating competition for common resources (possibly exploitative) between trout and these charr individuals. In allopatric enclosures these relations were not significant. Diets were correlated to the morphology supporting selection against the benthic‐feeding type, i.e. individuals with morphology and feeding behaviour most similar to their competitor, the benthic feeding brown trout. Thus, this study lends support to the hypothesis that Arctic charr have evolved in competition with brown trout, and through ecological character displacement adapted to their present niche.  相似文献

1. We studied the effect of mesh size (6 and 3 mm) on interactions between brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) and benthic invertebrates in enclosures placed in a stream in southern Sweden. We also compared how different prey exchange rates affected interactions between trout and invertebrates.
2. Trout had strong impacts on some benthic taxa, and different mesh sizes produced different patterns. Trout affected the abundance of 10 of the 21 taxa examined, six in enclosures with 3 mm mesh and six in enclosures with 6 mm mesh. The abundance of nine of the prey taxa was lower in the presence of trout, only leptocerids were more numerous in the presence of trout.
3. Our measurements of prey immigration/emigration, together with trout diet data, suggest that direct consumption by trout, rather than avoidance behaviour by prey, explains most decreases in prey abundance. There was avoidance behaviour by only two of the twenty-one prey taxa, with trout inducing emigration of the mayflies Baetis rhodani and Paraleptophlebia sp.
4. Trout indirectly increased periphyton biomass in both 3 and 6 mm enclosures. The effect of trout on periphyton was probably due to strong effects of trout on the grazer, Baetis rhodani , Heptagenia sp. and Paralepthoplebia sp.
5. Our results suggest that mesh size, through its effects on exchange rates of prey, may affect interactions between predators and prey in running waters, but that the effects of dispersal and predation on invertebrates are taxon specific.  相似文献

The genetic structure of Chilean hake Merluccius gayi gayi, was analyzed using starch gel protein electrophoresis. Samples were collected from four localities along the coast off Chile. A total of 1500 specimens sampled from Coquimbo, San Antonio, Talcahuano and Puerto Montt were used in the study. Genetic information was obtained for six allozyme loci Pgi-1, Pgi-2, Pgm, Idh-1, Idh-2 and Aat. The results of the analysis showed no significant allelic differences among samples from various localities, with an average FST value of 0.007 for all loci and samples. A heterogeneity test for all loci and specimens from the four localities showed only two significant values. Thus, Chilean hake populations along the coast of Chile appear to be genetically homogeneous.  相似文献

The presence of four sharks was documented in coastal waters of Antofagasta (Chile) using an unmanned aerial video camera. Fishers took advantage of this aggregation to catch and sold three adult broadnose sevengill sharks Notorynchus cepedianus. Species identity was determined by using the cox1 gene. One additional video was later recorded 3000 km south of Antofagasta, and shows a large female interacting with a salmon farming facility. Shallow water records of N. cepedianus were previously undocumented in Chilean waters, yet historically have provided an opportunistic event to fishers in Chile.  相似文献

This research was carried out to examine the hypothesis that the absence of fathers promotes a different spacing behaviour in juveniles Calomys musculinus at the beginning of the breeding period. The study was carried out in four 0.25-ha enclosures (two control and two experimental), in a natural pasture, between November 2003 and February 2004. In this study the fathers were removed from the experimental enclosures after juveniles were born. Home-range size depended on sex of juveniles and treatment (father removal). In control and experimental enclosures, female home-range sizes were always smaller than male home-ranges. Male home-ranges were always larger in experimental enclosures than in control enclosures. Treatment and overlap type (intra- and inter-sexual) were not independent. The overlap proportions of male home-ranges were greatest in experimental enclosures than in control enclosures, in both the overlap types (male/male, males/females). The intra- (females/females) and inter-sexual (females/males) overlap proportions of female home-ranges were independent of treatment. In C. musculinus, at the beginning of the breeding period and in absence of adult males, juvenile males increase their home-range size and therefore the degree of inter- and intra-sexual home-range overlap as a mechanism for enlarging the number of receptive females that they encounter.  相似文献

Aim Two species of the brine shrimp, namely Artemia franciscana Kellogg and A. persimilis Piccinelli and Prosdocimi, inhabit Chile. Most studies so far have shown that A. franciscana is the most widely distributed species in Chile, with A. persimilis present only in Chilean Patagonia. In general, there is good agreement between morphological and genetic comparisons of Chilean populations with respect to species discrimination. However, a number of results indicate an overlap with some populations tending to diverge from A. franciscana and/or resembling A. persimilis. Prior to the mid 90's the use of DNA markers in Artemia was rather limited, despite their successful application in numerous other species. In this study, we investigate whether the conclusions drawn from traditional comparative tools are congruent with the pattern of genetic divergence depicted by DNA analysis at the mitochondrial level. Location Eight sites in Chile and two reference samples of A. franciscana and A. persimilis from San Francisco Bay (USA) and Buenos Aires (Argentina), respectively. Methods Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of a 535 bp segment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene with nine restriction enzymes in 240 individuals. Results No haplotype was shared between the two species. Five restriction enzymes produced species‐specific patterns, enabling the unambiguous assignment of populations to species. Very high (100%) bootstrap values supported the clustering of haplotypes in two groups corresponding to the two species. The two species were clearly differentiated with average sequence divergence of 12.3%. High genetic differentiation was also found among con‐specific populations of A. franciscana with an FST estimate of 91%. Main conclusions The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) results of this study show a broadly similar pattern to those of previous allozyme and nuclear DNA analyses, with the two New World species appearing as highly divergent. The presence of A. persimilis in southern Chile (Chilean Patagonia) was confirmed. Hence, a species previously regarded as geographically restricted mainly to Argentina, appears to have expanded its range. Populations of A. franciscana appear highly structured with a level of inter‐population genetic differentiation much higher for mtDNA than previously reported with allozymes. Clustering of these populations does not follow a clear geographic pattern. The identification of population‐specific genetic markers for A. persimilis and A. franciscana will help to tackle further aspects of the speciation patterns of these species.  相似文献

1. Suspension feeding by bivalves exceeds that by other planktivores in many North American rivers, and food webs may be altered substantially by differences in feeding patterns between native unionid mussels and invading dreissenid mussels. 2. We conducted an experiment comparing zooplanktivory by one unionid and two dreissenid species that addressed several primary questions. Is benthic planktivory important in this river? Has this linkage been altered substantially by dreissenids? Do the two dreissenid species differ in planktivory, and is this ecologically important if quagga mussels extend their geographical range? 3. Our 12‐day experiment consisted of controls (no mussels) and treatments with unionid (Elliptio complanata), quagga (Dreissena bugensis) or zebra (D. polymorpha) mussels in 3500‐L, 80‐μm mesh enclosures placed in a slackwater area of the St Lawrence River. 4. The density of the most abundant calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis increased in the presence of dreissenids, probably as an indirect food web response. By day 12, a cumulative effect was shown by the most overwhelmingly abundant rotifer, Polyarthra, whose density declined dramatically in dreissenid enclosures compared with control and unionid enclosures. Rotifer densities in unionid enclosures were not different from controls, nor were dreissenid treatments different from each other. The effects on rotifers were probably from predation, as Chl‐a did not vary among treatments. 5. We conclude that benthic‐pelagic coupling via planktivory is important in slackwater areas. Dreissenids have strengthened this linkage, but range extension of quaggas should not appreciably alter effects produced by a similar biomass of zebra mussels.  相似文献

1. Ecologists have struggled to describe general patterns in the impacts of predators on stream prey, particularly at large, realistic spatial and temporal scales. Among the confounding variables in many systems is the presence of multiple predators whose interactions can be complex and unpredictable. 2. We studied the interactions between brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and larval two‐lined salamanders (Eurycea bislineata), two dominant vertebrate predators in New England stream systems, by examining patterns of two‐lined salamander abundance in stream reaches above and below waterfalls that are barriers to fish dispersal, by measuring the effects of trout on salamander density and activity using a large‐scale manipulation of brook trout presence, and by conducting a small‐scale laboratory experiment to study how brook trout and larval two‐lined salamanders affect each other's prey consumption. 3. We captured more salamanders above waterfalls, in the absence of trout, than below waterfalls where trout were present. Salamander density and daytime activity decreased following trout addition to streams, and salamander activity shifted from aperiodic to more nocturnal with fish. Analysis of stomach contents from our laboratory experiment revealed that salamanders eat fewer prey with trout, but trout eat more prey in the presence of salamanders. 4. We suggest that as predators in streams, salamanders can influence invertebrate prey communities both directly and through density‐ and trait‐mediated interactions with other predators.  相似文献

A tooth of a sirenian from the Late Miocene sediments of the Bahia Inglesa Formation (Chile) is described and referred to the Dugongidae. The fossil represents the first sirenian record from Chile and the southernmost record of the Sirenia in the eastern Pacific Ocean (latitude 27° S). The Chilean record extends the already wide geographical distribution of fossil sirenians along the Eastern Pacific coast. The presence of a sirenian during the Miocene on the Chilean coast is related to a globally warmer climatic condition and a still limited northern extension of the cold Humboldt Current.
