SUMMARY. From 16 air-lift samplers described in the literature, three were selected for operation from a small boat: Mackey, Pearson et al. and Verollet & Tachet samplers. Random samples (number of sampling units n= 10) were taken in a large tank with a known number of dried peas, representing invertebrates, amongst stones of uniform size. Separate experiments were performed with three sizes of stones (modal sizes 2–4, 16–20 and 32–36 mm). Stratified-random samples (usually n= 10) were taken in rivers at lour sites with modal particle sizes of < 0.1 2–4. 32–128 and 64–128 mm. The samplers were compared with a Ponar grab in the tank experiments and the field, and with a Naturalist's dredge in the field. Rates of pumping at different air-flows were established for each sampler. Water-How increased with increasing air-How and increasing submergence of the riser-pipe. The Mackey sampler achieved the highest water-flow and lifted more substratum and larger stones (64–128 mm) than the other samplers. The Verollet & Tachet sampler had the lowest pumping rate and failed to lift stones > 8 mm long, whilst the Pearson et al. sampler, with an intermediate performance, lifted mud and stones < 32 mm long. In the tank experiments, the area from which the Mackey and Pearson et al. samplers collected peas varied with air-flow, operating time and type of substratum. The Maekey sampler over-sampled and the Pearson et al. sampler usually under-sampled their respective sampling areas, except the latter sampler at high air-flows gave approximately quantitative results comparable to those of the Ponar grab for peas on the surface of stones 16–20 mm. No sampler collected much at a depth of 3 cm on larger stones (32–36 mm), and the Verollet & Tachet sampler failed completely on all substrata. In field trials, the Mackey and Pearson et al. samplers provided good qualitative samples except on large stones (32–128mm). The Verollet & Tachet sampler lifted little material. The relative abundance of taxa often differed between samplers. Estimates of the number of invertebrates per m2 differed widely between samplers except for the Pearson et al. and Ponar grab which gave similar quantitative results at three sites. Values were very low for the Verollet & Tachet sampler and Naturalist's dredge and always very high for the Mackey sampler which often grossly over-sampled its sampling area. Therefore, these three samplers cannot be considered as quantitative. The relationship between the variances and the means of samples of peas in the tank and most invertebrates in the field followed a power law with values of the exponent b in the range 1.13–2.51. The present study completes the evaluation of 14 samplers used to sample benthic macro-invertebrates in deep rivers, and the more important conclusions from the comparative studies of seven grabs, four dredges and three air-lift samplers are summarized in a table.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. As three previous comparative studies of deep-water samplers for benthic macroinvertebrates in rivers highlighted the need for a quantitative sampler for use on stony substrata, a new air-lift sampler was developed. It can be operated from a small boat by two people, weighs 13.5–20.0 kg, depending on the length of riser used, and extends the maximum range of substrata that may be sampled quantitatively from 16–32 mm to 128—256 mm. The sampling area is isolated by forcing a collecting cylinder into the substratum, and rapid evacuation of the contents is assisted by a vibrator.
2. All the major specifications of the sampler were determined experimentally in a large tank using three sizes of substrata and plastic pellets to represent invertebrates. The sampler performed accurately to a depth of at least 8 cm on substrata ranging from gravel (2–4 mm) to large stones (32–36 mm long).
3. The performance of the sampler was compared with that of a Ponar grab and Pearson el at. air-lift sampler at two sites on a large river and also with a Naturalist's dredge and a diver-operated Hess-Waters sampler at one of the sites where there were large stones up to 280 mm long. In terms of both mean taxa per sample and mean numbers m−2, samples taken using the new air-lift sampler provided estimates comparable to or belter than those obtained with the other samplers.  相似文献

The performance of five types of Ekman grab: the Birge-Ekman, the Kebo Lab-Ekman, the Hydro-Bios-Ekman, the Winnipeg-Ekmanand the Håkanson-Ekman, were examined in situ by SCUBA diving. Trials and observations are presented, and photographic documentation provided. Each type of grab often produced unrepresentative samples due to operation deficiencies. Tilting, brimming, and entry of sediment from outside the sample chamber, as well as redistribution, resuspension and loss of enclosed matter are the main biasing factors. Since the grabs under study are models in general use, these findings suggest that caution must be exercised when evaluating studies based on Ekman grabs of the usual design. Sampling reliability can be significantly improved by furnishing the grabs with a supporting stand and a mechanism which secures the lids during ascent. Tested designs for such devices are presented. A properly operated Ekman grab of adequate design is a suitable instrument for collecting certain types of samples such as benthic macrofauna, and infauna in particular.  相似文献

A new quantitative grab for sampling benthos is described. It is constructed of stainless steel to retard corrosion, and incorporates six features designed to make it outperform other grabs: 1) a frame support; 2) counter-weighted arms; 3) overlapping buckets; 4) upright posts on the frame for addition of weights; 5) a fine mesh cover on each bucket; and 6) a moving elliptical pivot point. These features result in high reliability compared to other grabs, and a somewhat quadrangular bite profile. The model in use digs to 6 cm depth over the entire area sampled, and penetrates to a maximum of 11.5 cm.  相似文献

Artificial substrates were compared with a Ponar grab for sampling benthic macroinvertebrates in Lake Anna, Louisa Co., Virginia. The objective was t0 find which technique was best for assessment 0f thermal effluent effects using the following criteria: 1) provide reliable data on density and composition 0f the macrobenthos with a reasonable number 0f replicates; 2) collect the most taxa; and, 3) require the least amount 0f time. Leaves, 3M Corporation's #200 conservation web, and limestone rocks were compared. Each material was tested separately in chicken wire baskets placed 0n the bottom at several depths. Three replicates of each type were retrieved monthly from each depth using SCUBA and cloth flour sacks and compared with grab samples taken from the same depths. Lesser amounts of these materials were tested separately in smaller plastic containers. All large artificial substrate samplers collected significantly more individuals (P = 0.05) and taxa than the Ponar grab. Small web and leaf samplers best met all three 0f the established criteria. The SCUBA system developed in the study is a fast and reliable sampling method.  相似文献

SUMMARY. After considering the large number of dredges described in the literature, four light-weight dredges were chosen for manual operation from a small boat or the bank: Irish triangular dredge, small Fast dredge, medium-sized and large Naturalist's dredges. The dredges were tested in a series of trials at three sites in two rivers. A stratified random sample (number of sampling units, n = 5) was taken at each site and the modal particle sizes at sites 1–3 were 1–2 mm (fine gravel), 64–128 mm (larger stones) and 128–256 mm, respectively. The dredges usually took a similar range of stone sizes at each site but the design of the Fast dredge excluded larger stones (>16 mm). The Irish dredge sometimes failed to operate correctly. Variations in the volume of substrata taken with each dredge were large, both between sampling units in the same sample and between samples. The latter differences were partially due to the increase in the modal size of the stones, especially between sites 1 and 2, the different sampling areas of the dredges and the depth of penetration into the substratum. Penetration depth was probably greatest for the two Naturalist's dredges, smaller for the Fast dredge and smallest for the Irish dredge. In field trials, the relative abundances of major taxa were similar for most dredges at each site; major exceptions were the Fast dredge at site 2 and the Irish dredge at site 3. There was a high variability between sampling units in the same sample and therefore a lack of precision in the estimates of the mean number of invertebrates per sample. Therefore, the dredges cannot be used as quantitative samplers for the estimation of population density. Their adequacy as qualitative samplers for the estimation of total number of taxa per sample varied considerably and maximum estimates of their efficiencies for a small sample (n= 5) were <40% for the Irish and Fast dredges, >57% for the medium-sized Naturalist's dredge and >76% for the large Naturalist's dredge. There was a clear relationship between the number of taxa and the number of invertebrates taken at each site and this relationship was well described by a power law with an exponent within the range 0.18–0.53. The number of sampling units in the sample had no significant effect on the power-law equations for each site. The power-law equation was very similar for most of the dredges at each site, the only major exception being the Fast dredge at site 1. The implications of this relationship are discussed.  相似文献

Nitellopsis obtusa, a macroalga (Characeae) native to Europe and Asia, was found in U.S. waters of the St. Clair-Detroit River system in 1983, thus extending the range of this taxon into the Laurentian Great Lakes about 850 km from the St. Lawrence River where it was first discovered in North America in 1978. Its occurrence only in water frequented by commercial shipping vessels suggests that it is distributed via this mechanism. In the St. Clair-Detroit River system, N. obtusa was collected with a Ponar grab at four locations, and with a grapnel at one additional location. It was the ninth most frequently found macrophyte and it was most abundant at Belle Isle in the Detroit River, where the mean dry-weight biomass in Ponar samples was 0 g m-2 in June, 37 g m-2 in August, and 32 g m−2 in September. Maximum biomass of this taxon in one Ponar grab at this location was 289 g m-2 in September. The alga occurred primarily in water of relatively low current velocity (11.3 cm s−1) and in association with Vallisneria americana, Myriophyllum spicatum, Potamogeton richardsonii, Najas flexilis, and Elodea canadensis. We present observations on the variability of sediment penetration depth by the Ponar grab sampler, which lead us to question the reliability of grab samples in the quantitative study of freshwater benthos. Penetration depth of the Petite Ponar grab depends on substrate type, and correlates with the amount of organic carbon, the water content and the granulometry of the sediment. Since these factors can also influence faunal composition and vertical distribution in the sediment, it is important to study the performance of the sampler before a biological explanation for the observed pattern is given. At the site studied, a case study was performed, in which variable grab penetration did not influence biological interpretation because the penetration depth of the grab followed that of the organisms under study.Research Assistant of the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research (N.F.W.O.)Research Assistant of the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research (N.F.W.O.)  相似文献

Habitat competition in brown trout Salmo trutta and Siberian sculpin Cottus poecilopus was investigated by varying density, fish size, and species composition in stream channels providing areas of different substratum particle sizes. In allopatry, both small (52 ± 4 mm L T) and large (86 ± 6 mm L T) brown trout exhibited strong preference for the intermediate (8–11 cm diameter) and large (17–21 cm) gravel substrata. There was a tendency for more brown trout to occupy finer (2–4 cm) substrata with increasing density, in particular for large brown trout. Also, more small brown trout were observed on finer substrata when tested with large brown trout, suggesting interspecific competition for restricted space. Both small (56 ± 6 mm L T) and large (88 ± 10 mm L T) Siberian sculpin preferred the large gravel in all tests, and did not change their substratum preferences much with increasing densities, suggesting higher tolerance for 'crowding'. The large Siberian sculpin preferred the coarser substratum, and the largest individuals were consistently found on it. In sympatry with large Siberian sculpin, habitat displacement of brown trout occurred, indicative of interspecific competition. A higher proportion of small and large brown trout occupied the finer substrata than in allopatry. Habitat selection by large Siberian sculpin appeared to be unaffected by species composition and density. Small Siberian sculpin were displaced to finer substrata when tested with large Siberian sculpin, suggesting intraspecific competition. The results indicate that Siberian sculpin are potential habitat competitors for young brown trout.  相似文献

Suitability criteria for spawning habitat of riverine European grayling   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Generalized suitability curves, developed for the spawning habitat of grayling Thymallus thymallus by combining new preference data with information available in the literature, provided optimal ranges for dominant substratum size, water depth and mean water velocity. These were 16–32 mm, 30–40 cm, and 50–60 cm s−1, respectively.  相似文献

The effect of substratum on growth and metabolic rate was assessed in larval white sturgeon Acipenser transmontanus. Yolk‐sac larvae (YSL) were reared in bare tanks or tanks with gravel as substratum from hatch until approximately 16 days post hatch (dph). The effect of an artificial substratum was also evaluated on growth alone. Substratum had a significant effect on mass, with larvae reared in gravel and artificial substrata being larger than those reared without substratum. Routine metabolic rates were significantly lower and relative aerobic scope (the difference between maximum and routine metabolic rate) was significantly higher for YSL and feeding larvae (FL) reared in gravel relative to those reared in bare tanks, particularly before fish started feeding exogenously. Furthermore, gravel‐reared larvae had higher whole‐body glycogen concentrations relative to bare‐tank‐reared larvae. Routine factorial scope (maximum metabolic rate divided by routine metabolic rate) was relatively low in all treatments (< 1·7) indicating a limited ability to elevate metabolic rate above routine early in development and mass exponents for metabolic rate exceeded 1. Taken together, these data indicate that YSL reared without substratum may divert more of their energy to non‐growth related processes impairing growth. This finding underscores the importance of adequate rearing substratum for growth of A. transmontanus and may provide support for habitat restoration and alternative hatchery rearing methods associated with sturgeon conservation.  相似文献

Microhabitat suitability models are useful tools to enhance the reintroduction success of fish. Since 2008, a translocation and reintroduction program has been carried out in Flanders to prevent substantial loss of genetic variability in the Cottus perifretum (bullhead) population, and to meet the goals set by the Habitat Directive. To this end, habitat suitability of potential headstreams was assessed on a macrohabitat and microhabitat scale prior to the reintroduction. On a macrohabitat scale, water quality, habitat structure, food availability, and fish community were screened. Based on microhabitat models for bullhead in the summer period, microhabitat suitability was assessed in headstreams where macrohabitat characteristics showed a high potential for success. Both macro‐ and microhabitat assessment showed that reintroduction of bullheads in the Nellebeek, Bruelbeek, and Mollendaalbeek would most likely lead to self‐sustaining populations. For the Sint‐Annabeek, the microhabitat suitability model, considering depth and stream velocity, estimates that 7.5–9.5% of the headstream is suitable for bullhead. However, when substratum is taken into account, the microhabitat suitability index shows that only 4.3–5.8% of the brook is suitable. The current habitat quality and quantity in the Sint‐Annabeek is estimated to support a mean total population of 812 bullheads. However, the microhabitat suitability can be substantially improved by the artificial deposition of medium‐sized gravel (5–50 mm) and large gravel (50–100 mm). By doing so, the mean estimated population size could increase up to 1,330 individuals. Our results show that habitat improvement is necessary prior to the reintroduction of bullheads in the Sint‐Annabeek.  相似文献

Stereo‐video scuba transects were conducted during daylight hours from June to September 2013 within a proposed marine protected area (MPA) in the Firth of Clyde, west of Scotland. More juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua of fork length (LF) range 6–11 cm were observed in substrata containing mixed gravel, including maerl, than in boulder‐cobble substrata with high algal cover, or sand with low density seagrass. Community composition was significantly different between substratum types. A decrease in G. morhua abundance was observed over the period of data collection. Over time, mean and variance in G. morhua LF increased, indicating multiple recruitment events. Protecting mixed gravel substrata could be a beneficial management measure to support the survival and recruitment of juvenile G. morhua; other substrata might be important at night given their diel migratory behaviour. Stereo‐video cameras provide a useful non‐destructive fisheries‐independent method to monitor species abundance and length measurements.  相似文献

Grayling spawning sites were investigated in two French rivers, the Pollon (1 year) and the Suran (2 years) and described by current velocity, water depth, and substrate composition, completed by an assessment of bottom shear stress with FST-hemispheres. A comparison was made between used and available habitats, the latter being characterized by random sampling of 300 m long (Pollon) and 510 m long (Suran) river sections, both including three riffle/pool sequences. Mean velocities observed on spawning sites did not differ significantly between rivers or years (overall mean 48–9 cm s-1 S.D. = 11.9, range 25.8–91.7 cm s-1, n =150). Most water depths ranged from 10 to 40 cm in both rivers, but mean depths were significantly different ( P <0.05). Substratum of spawning grounds was dominated by gravel and pebbles (2–64 mm) in both rivers. Most spawning sites (99%) were characterized by a narrow range of hemispheres (nos 9–13), i.e. a range of shear stress of about 5–16 dyn m-2. In the Pollon, spawners between spawning acts were found in a resting pool located immediately downstream from the spawning area and characterized by slow-flowing water (mainly <20 cm s-1) and great depth (mainly >60 cm), with cover provided by overhanging branches and tree roots.  相似文献

We have investigated the effects of three current velocities and three substrate sizes (gravel to cobble) on the spawning behavior of Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis, in spawning-induction and habitat-selection experiments. In the spawning-induction experiment under laboratory conditions the number of females induced to spawn was significantly fewer at low current velocity (ca. 5 cm s–1) than at medium (ca. 30 cm s–1) or high (ca. 50 cm s–1) current velocity. Females spawned independently of substrate size in the experimental tank, and did not bury their eggs in the substrate bed. In the habitat-selection experiment under field conditions, females selected the substrate microhabitat and spawned more frequently at a site with medium substrate size (very coarse gravel; major axis ca. 40 mm) than at sites with small (fine gravel; ca. 8 mm) or large (cobble; ca. 70 mm) substrate size. We conclude that Japanese dace select spawning sites at least partly on the basis of current velocity and substrate size, which affects the survival rate of eggs.  相似文献

From July 2006 to November 2007 the effects of sediment disposal on a macrobenthic association were evaluated at the dredged material disposal site, located 3 km northeast of Itajaí Harbour navigation channel. Seven sample sites were chosen, five inside the licensed disposal area and two outside. Five samples were collected from each site with a 0.042 m2 Van-Veen grab. Nine sampling campaigns took place, one before, one during, and seven after the disposal operations. Evaluations were carried out through sediment and macrofauna composition analysis. An increase in coarse fractions of sediments was found during the first months, mainly within the licensed disposal area. Sites outside the area kept the same granulometric characteristics. Nested ANOVA showed that abundance, taxa richness and Shannon–Weaver diversity were significantly smaller after the disposal, and recovered the initial mean values after the disposal ends. PERMANOVA showed a high heterogeneity between the sites. It decreased until the fifth month after disposal operations, mainly in the sites inside the licensed area. These sites were characterized by low abundance and high variability among the samples. Eight to 16 months after disposal sites recovered their heterogeneity, indicating less variability among the samples of each site and distinct benthic macrofaunal composition. The high volume and frequency of sediment disposal were the main factors of environmental modifications, since the amount of deposited sediment on the seabed probably exceeded the natural sedimentation rates. The presence of a benthic macrofauna adapted to natural/human disturbances was crucial to the fast recovery verified in the area.  相似文献

Synopsis We studied vertical distribution, substrate preference and food choice of brown trout, Salmo trutta, from benthic gillnet catches at four littoral sampling locations in a Norwegian hydroelectric reservoir. The sampling locations had different bottom substrates; at one location the bottom substrate consisted of sand, while at the other three, substrates consisted of stones ranging 2–5 cm, 10–30 cm and 30–150 cm in diameter, respectively. Small-sized (< 160 cm) and intermediate-size (164–269 mm) brown trout were mainly caught close to the bottom (0–0.5 m above). Small-sized brown trout were caught in the highest frequency at the location with substrate consisting of 10–30 cm large stones. Intermediate-sized brown trout were also caught in highest frequency at this location, but were also caught in a high frequency at the location with sandy substrate. In contrast, the catches of large-sized ( 270 mm) brown trout did not vary with distance from the bottom or with substrate coarseness. The most important food items for the brown trout were aquatic insects, surface insects, Eurycercus lamellatus and crustacean zooplankton, mainly Daphnia longispina, Bythotrephes longimanus, and Holopedium gibberum. In accordance with the differences in vertical distribution, benthic food was more important to small than to large brown trout. We argue that small brown trout stayed close to the bottom to reduce aggressive behaviour from larger specimens, and that small brown trout were therefore more dependent on benthic food items. We also argue that the observed differences in substrate preference between the size groups of brown trout is explained by variation in access to shelter, visual isolation between individuals and benthic feeding conditions between locations.  相似文献

The swimming performance and associated swimming behaviour (i.e. substratum‐skimming, station‐holding and free swimming) were assessed in shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum during critical swimming and endurance swimming tests over a rough and a smooth substratum. It was hypothesized that the addition of a rough substratum in the swimming flume may provide a surface for the A. brevirostrum to grip and offer an energetic advantage. Substratum type did not affect the critical swimming performance, but A. brevirostrum consistently performed more bottom behaviours (i.e. substratum‐skimming and station‐holding) while on a smooth substratum. Acipenser brevirostrum had little contact with the rough substratum until the velocity was >1 body length s?1. Endurance swimming time was significantly lower for A. brevirostrum over the rough bottom at the highest velocity (30 cm s?1) which may be attributed to the observed increase in free swimming and decrease in bottom behaviours. During endurance swimming, the rough substratum was mainly used at intermediate velocities, suggesting that there may be a stability cost associated with being in contact with the rough substratum at certain velocities.  相似文献
