The fish ectoparasites Branchiura (Crustacea) display two different ways of attachment to the fish surface as adults: the first maxillae are either hooks (Dolops) or suction discs (Argulus, Chonopeltis, and Dipteropeltis). In larval Argulus foliaceus the first maxillae are hooks. With the first molecular phylogeny of the Branchiura as a background, the present paper discusses the evolutionary scenarios leading to hooks versus suction discs. Specific homologies exist between larval Argulus foliaceus hooks and adult Dolops ranarum hooks. These include the presence of a comparable number of segments/portions and a distal segment terminating in a double structure: a distal two-part hook (in Argulus) or one hook and an associate spine-like structure (in Dolops). In the phylogenetic reconstruction based on three molecular markers (mitochondrial 16S rRNA, nuclear 18S and 28S rRNA), Dolops ranarum is found to be in a sister group position to all other Branchiura, which in this analysis include six Argulus and one Chonopeltis sequences. Based on the molecular phylogeny a likely evolutionary scenario is that the ancestral branchiuran used hooks (on the first maxilla) for attachment, as seen in Dolops, of which the proximal part was subsequently modified into suction discs in Argulus and Chonopeltis (and Dipteropeltis). The sister group relationship of the Branchiura and Pentastomida is confirmed based on the most comprehensive taxon sampling until now. No evidence was found for a branchiuran in-group position of the Pentastomida.  相似文献

The maxilla II, normally present in crustaceans, is absent in most adult anomopods although it was found to occur in embryos of six species of this group. The appendage is reduced in representatives of families that lack it in the adult. The disappearance of the second maxilla is accomplished in a different way in the Chydoridae and Bosminidae as compared with the Daphniidae. A biramous structure of this appendage was observed in some stages of development in the largest species of Anomopoda. This feature of morphology is similar to the situation in other Branchiopoda.  相似文献

The spiny lobster Panulirus argus has a life cycle consisting of a long-term (~9-12 months) planktonic larval period with 11 larval stages (the phyllosoma), a short (<1 month?) planktonic-to-benthic transitional postlarval stage (the puerulus), and benthic juvenile and adult phases. The mouthparts and foregut during these stages were examined and described by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in an investigation of the species' developmental morphology, diet, and ecology. The phyllosoma mouthparts close to the esophagus are the labrum, mandibles, paragnaths, and first maxillae. The second maxillae and first and second maxillipeds are increasingly distant from the esophagus as the larva develops. The pair of asymmetrical mandibles bear many teeth and spines, and the molar processes form what appears to be an intricate toothed shear. The mandibles remain similar throughout the phyllosoma stages. During the molt into the puerulus, the mouthparts are greatly changed, and the second maxilla and the three maxillipeds join the other mouthparts near the esophagus. However, the transformation appears incomplete, and many of the mouthparts are not fully formed until the molt to juvenile completes their development. The phyllosoma foregut lacks a gastric mill and has but one chamber. In addition, the first two stages lack a gland filter. During the molt to puerulus, the foregut is greatly changed and subsequently is similar to typical decapod foreguts in having an anterior cardiac and posterior pyloric chamber. Only rudimentary internal armature is present. Following the molt to juvenile, the foregut is quite similar to that of the adult, which exhibits a substantial gastric mill. The 11 phyllosoma stages were separated into two groups (group A = stages 1-5, group B = stages 6-11) on the basis of changes in both mouthpart and foregut morphology. The puerulus has never been observed to feed. Nothing was observed in our investigations that would prevent feeding, though both mouthpart and foregut development appeared incomplete. The mouthpart and foregut structures of larval, postlarval and juvenile P. argus differ widely, possibly reflecting the extreme modifications for different habitats found among these life phases.  相似文献

The main purpose of the present review is to draw attention to growing problems in the modern systematics and phylogenetics which are presently underestimated by the professional community. The dramatic reduction of the importance of ontogeny and morphology in phylogenetic studies of the second part of the 20th century is considered among the major factors of the modern taxonomic and evolutionary paradigm. The deep contradiction of modern approaches, which either merely consider systematics and phylogeny as genealogy or even in a neotypolgical manner irrespective of the evolutionary idea, is demonstrated. Thus, despite the widespread opinion that the evolutionary theory is the major basis for taxonomy, the processes, which in fact caused the origin and formation of the systematic hierarchy are often considered as redundant for the procedure of classification. In this respect, the classical, but well forgotten statement that evolution is a modification of ontogeny is specially highlighted. Tight relationships between evolution, ontogeny, systematics, and phylogenetics are prima facie obvious, but also presently underestimated, although the field of the evo-devo is continuously growing. Paradoxically, even despite the outburst of various molecular ontogenetic approaches, the commonly accepted evolutionary paradigm still lacks a general theory for changes in the shape of organisms. As a step towards the development of such a theory, a synthesis (or more exactly, resynthesis) of still largely independently developing major biological fields, i.e., ontogenetic and evolutionary studies, on the one hand, and traditional taxonomy, on the other hand, a new concept of ontogenetic systematics is proposed. The new concept is intended for integration of supposedly ??immobile?? traditional taxonomy with the dynamics, but predominantly considered as hypothetical, evolutionary field based on the process of ontogeny, which, in contrast to the evolution itself, can be observed in the real time. Therefore, it is concluded that, for instance, the evolution of the main group of living organisms Metazoa, is primarily the evolution of a very limited number of ontogenetic cycles that were formed as early as the Early Cambrian. A significant underestimation of cyclic properties of ontogeny in the evolution and systematics is shown. Using two model groups, echinoderms of the class Ophiuroidea and dorid nudibranch mollusks (Gastropoda: Doridacea), practical importance of the integrative approach developed here is demonstrated. The ??disruption?? of the ancestral ontogenetic cycle and further formation of a new descendant cycle (which implies some continuity of ancestral and descendant characters) is considered to be a major evolutionary pattern. The model proposed implies either progressive (addition of stages and characters) or regressive (reduction of already existing stages and structures) modification of ancestral taxon, the diagnosis of which corresponds to the model of its ontogenetic cycle. In the extreme cases of disruption of the ancestral ontogenetic cycle, adult characters of descendants are substituted by juvenile ancestral features, demonstrating paedomorphoses in the narrow sense. Within the framework of the approach proposed, the evolutionary and ontogenetic models of ancestral ontogenetic cycles of brittle stars and dorid nudibranchs are developed and discussed. Based on the original material of the extinct Paleozoic ophiuroid group Oegophiurida, the origin of key evolutionary novelties is discussed. A major conclusion of the present review is the high necessity of integration of new molecular data with already well-established taxonomic hierarchy and ontogenetic information as a basis for the development of the general theory of transformations of organisms, i.e., the theory of evolution in its true sense.  相似文献

Many diverse animals use arrays of hair-like structures to perform important jobs such as feeding, gas exchange, smelling, and swimming. Since these functions involve hair interactions with the surrounding water or air, analysis of the fluid dynamics of diverse hair-bearing appendages reveals how the morphology of an array of hairs affects it performance. Mathematical and physical models of flow between cylinders have shown that arrays of large, rapidly moving cylinders are leaky sieves, whereas little fluid moves through a row of small, slow rods. The purpose of the present study was to test this prediction for realistic appendage morphologies and to elucidate whether the design of a hairy leg can affect the range of speeds in which this transition in function occurs. We studied flow through hairy food-capturing appendages (second maxillae) of calanoid copepods, abundant planktonic crustaceans whose feeding on unicellular algae forms an important link in many marine food webs. Using dynamically scaled physical models, we found that hairy appendages undergo a transition between paddle- and sieve-like function at a critical range of sizes and speeds. The coarser the mesh of hairs on second maxillae, the smaller the size and speed at which this functional shift occurs. Thus, a simple increase in size (ontogenetic or evolutionary) or speed can generate a novel function (a paddle can become a filter), but the morphology of a hairy appendage determines the size and speed range at which leakiness to fluid flow can be affected by behavior or growth.  相似文献

The morphological adaptations of protozoans to sessile mode life and evolutionary changes in ontogeny are considered. There are main morphotypes of sessile protists: stalked organisms that attached to substrate by the extended base of body (basal disk), and unstalked organisms that are flatted on substrate. The origin of the morphotypes was independent in different taxa and involved nonhomologous structures. Adaptation to the sessile mode of life in the protists was connected with the progressive increase in the body size and intensity of organelle functions by polymerisation, subsequent division of function and change of functions. Evolution of adhesive organelles is characterised by growing intensity of their functions by allometric growth (usually without polymerisation), and in some cases with the subsequent division of functions and change of functions. The evolution manifests itself primarily in the organelles that provide interaction of cell with environment. The organelles that ensuring functioning of cell change due to correlations with the organelles of the first group. These two groups of organelles are similar to A.N. Sewertsoff's ecto- and endosomatic organs in multicellular organisms. The ontogeny of the sessile protists included three stages: formation of the migratory stage, distribution and choice of substrate and metamorphosis of the migratory stage after adhesion. As a rule there are no recapitulations on the first stage. The majority of structures tomotes or zoospores are inherited from the parent cell. Thus the present of some ancestral characteristics at the earlier stages of protistean ontogeny is display of the Baer's law. The main features of ontogeny evolution in sessile protists are the anaboly of the additional stages of life cycle, the displays of archallaxis or deviation during the migratory stage formation, and anaboly at the stage of buds morphogenesis after adhesion. At the last stage, the study of recapitulations is most perspective with the decision of phylogenetic problems in sessile protists.  相似文献

Summary The regulative behavior of fragments of the imaginal discs of the wing and first leg was studied when these fragments were combined with fragments of other thoracic imaginal discs. A fragment of the wing disc which does not normally regenerate when cultured could be stimulated to regenerate by combination with certain fragments of the haltere disc. When combined with a haltere disc fragment thought to be homologous by the criteria of morphology and the pattern of homoeotic transformation, such stimulated intercalary regeneration was not observed. Combinations of first and second leg disc fragments showed that a lateral first leg fragment could be stimulated to regenerate medial structures when combined with a medial second leg disc fragment but not when combined with a lateral second leg disc fragment. Combinations of wing and second leg disc fragments showed that one fragment of the second leg disc is capable of stimulating regeneration from a wing disc fragment while another second leg disc fragment fails to stimulate such regeneration. It is suggested that absence of intercalary regeneration in combinations of fragments of different thoracic imaginal discs is a result of homology or identity of the positional information residing in the cells of the fragments. The pattern of correspondence of positional information revealed by this analysis is consistant with the pattern of homology determined by morphological observation and by analysis of the positional specificity of homoeotic transformation among serially homologous appendages. The implications of the existence of homologous positional information in wing and second leg discs which share a common cell lineage early in development are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the stages of skeletal maturation of the maxilla and the mandible at the time of soft tissue palatal closure. Similar studies were not found in the literature. This investigation was based on maxillae and mandibles from 19 human embryos/fetuses selected by visual inspection of palatal structures, eight fetuses "just before palatal closure," and 11 fetuses "just after palatal closure." The findings are related to formerly described skeletal developmental stages in the maxilla, to stages in the symphysis menti region, and to development in the mandibular condylar region. The present study revealed that elevation of the palatal shelves takes place at a specific stage of maxillary skeletal maturity (stage Max III), at a time of mandibular development characterized by absence of condylar cartilage and by constancy in symphysis menti maturity (stage SM I). Knowledge of the normal sequence of prenatal skeletal development is considered essential for understanding the abnormal sequence of skeletal development.  相似文献

Previous research on amphibian taste organs concerned amphibians with a biphasic life history, that is, with larval period and metamorphosis. Direct developing frog species, such as Eleutherodactylus coqui, undergo a cryptic metamorphosis before hatching, and many larval‐specific features are vestigial or have been lost entirely from their ontogeny. Taste buds are present in larval stages of biphasically developing anurans and are replaced by taste discs during metamorphosis. One goal of this study was to characterize the ontogeny of taste buds and/or discs in E. coqui. The other goal was to examine correlations between body size and taste organ density and size in different regions of oral epithelium. The research reveals the presence of only one type of taste organ, characteristic of metamorphs of biphasic amphibians, namely taste disc. In addition, taste disc density and the area of the taste disc sensory zone change dramatically during growth.  相似文献

Flexicalymene retrorsa minuens from the uppermost 3 m of the Waynesville Formation of the Cincinnatian Series (Upper Ordovician) of North America lived approximately 445 Ma and exhibited marked reduction in maximum size relative to its stratigraphically subjacent sister subspecies, Flexicalymene retrorsa retrorsa. Phylogenetic analysis is consistent with the notion that F. retrorsa retrorsa was the ancestor of F. retrorsa minuens. F. retrorsa minuens has been claimed to differ from F. retrorsa retrorsa"in size alone," and thus presents a plausible example of global paedomorphic evolution in trilobites. Despite strong similarity in the overall form of the two subspecies, F. retrorsa minuens is neither a dwarf nor a simple progenetic descendant of F. retrorsa retrorsa. More complex patterns of global heterochronic paedomorphosis, such as a neotonic decrease in the rate of progress along a common ontogenetic trajectory with respect to size, coupled with growth cessation at a small size, "sequential" progenesis, or non-uniform changes in the rate of progress along a shared ontogenetic trajectory with respect to size, can also be rejected. Rather, differences between these subspecies are more consistent with localized changes in rates of character development than with a global heterochronic modification of the ancestral ontogeny. The evolution of F. retrorsa minuens from F. retrorsa retrorsa was largely dominated by modifications of the development of characters already evident in the ancestral ontogeny, not by the origin of novel structures. Factors promoting size reduction in F. retrorsa minuens appear to have been specific to this subspecies, because other co-occurring taxa, including other trilobite species, do not show marked differences in mean size.  相似文献

Scolecodonts provide fossil evidence of the evolution and diversification of jaw‐bearing polychaetes from the latest Cambrian onwards. However, their record before the Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) is scarce worldwide, which limits our understanding of key evolutionary events. One such event is the emergence of taxa possessing the asymmetrical labidognath‐type jaw apparatus architecture, which became common in the Middle Ordovician and is often dominant throughout the Palaeozoic. Here, we document a small collection of Dapingian scolecodonts from the Capillas section, Sierras Subandinas, north‐western Argentina. The isolated elements recovered allowed us to reconstruct the distinctive jaw apparatus, and to introduce a new taxon, Andiprion paxtonae gen. et sp. nov. The maxillary apparatus of Andiprion is intermediate between the symmetrognath type of the Early Ordovician Kadriorgaspis and the labidognath type that is present in polychaetaspids and related taxa. The apparatus architecture of Andiprion corresponds best to the labidognath type, but the morphology of the individual jaws suggests that it may be the most primitive representative of this lineage currently known. We propose that Andiprion‐like forms were ancestral to polychaetaspids, polychaeturids and ramphoprionids. The Capillas collection provides supporting evidence for the evolutionary homology of the ‘basal plate’ and the left first maxilla. Thus the labidognath‐type asymmetry, with an unpaired left maxilla III, developed as a result of gradual reduction in size of the first right jaw (‘basal plate’) in front of the carriers, instead of loss or fusion of anterior maxillae.  相似文献

Some general aspects of the concept of imaginal discs in the Holometabola are reevaluated. Their monolayer character and continuity with the surrounding epidermis are confirmed. Studies on the imaginal discs of the silkworm (Bombyx mori) and data from the literature show that the discs and their peripodial cells produce cuticle during larval life, as well as at metamorphosis. In B. mori it is demonstrated that adult and larval antennae are produced by the same cells or their progeny. The results also suggest that segments of the typically three-segmented larval antenna of Holometabola are not scape, pedicel, and one-segmented flagellum; at least segments 2 and 3 are of flagellar origin. Based on these and some additional facts it is argued that: (1) No larval organs are "replaced" at metamorphosis, but strict "sequential homology" is always maintained. (2) Imaginal discs are not undifferentiated structures destined to form the adult after larval breakdown, cannot be unambiguously defined, and do not represent qualitatively different epidermal structures. Classical imaginal discs (invaginated and present also in pre-final larval instars) arose several times independently and were not present in the larvae of ancestral Holometabola. (3) Since the disc cells are not undifferentiated and "embryonic" (if these words have a defined meaning at all), it is unreasonable to expect that the processes taking place in discs at metamorphosis would differ fundamentally from those occurring in other diploid metamorphosing epidermal cells.  相似文献

SUMMARY Molecular phylogenetics suggests that the Sipuncula fall into the Annelida, although they are morphologically very distinct and lack segmentation. To understand the evolutionary transformations from the annelid to the sipunculan body plan, it is important to reconstruct the ancestral states within the respective clades at all life history stages. Here we reconstruct the ancestral states for the head/introvert retractor muscles and the body wall musculature in the Sipuncula using Bayesian statistics. In addition, we describe the ontogenetic transformations of the two muscle systems in four sipunculan species with different developmental modes, using F-actin staining with fluorescent-labeled phalloidin in conjunction with confocal laser scanning microscopy. All four species, which have smooth body wall musculature and less than the full set of four introvert retractor muscles as adults, go through developmental stages with four retractor muscles that are eventually reduced to a lower number in the adult. The circular and sometimes the longitudinal body wall musculature are split into bands that later transform into a smooth sheath. Our ancestral state reconstructions suggest with nearly 100% probability that the ancestral sipunculan had four introvert retractor muscles, longitudinal body wall musculature in bands and circular body wall musculature arranged as a smooth sheath. Species with crawling larvae have more strongly developed body wall musculature than those with swimming larvae. To interpret our findings in the context of annelid evolution, a more solid phylogenetic framework is needed for the entire group and more data on ontogenetic transformations of annelid musculature are desirable.  相似文献

Studies of Drosophila metamorphosis have been hampered by our inability to visualize many of the remarkable changes that occur within the puparium. To circumvent this problem, we have expressed GFP in specific tissues of living prepupae and pupae and compiled images of these animals into time-lapse movies. These studies reveal, for the first time, the dynamics and coordination of morphogenetic movements that could only be inferred from earlier studies of dissected staged animals. We also identify responses that have not been described previously. These include an unexpected variation in some wild-type animals, where one of the first pairs of legs elongates in the wrong position relative to the second pair of legs and then relocates to its appropriate location. At later stages, the antennal imaginal discs migrate from a lateral position in the head to their final location at the anterior end, as leg and mouth structures are refined and the wings begin to fold. The larval salivary glands translocate toward the dorsal aspect of the animal and undergo massive cell death following head eversion, in synchrony with death of the abdominal muscles. These death responses fail to occur in rbp(5) mutants of the Broad-Complex (BR-C), and imaginal disc elongation and eversion is abolished in br(5) mutants of the BR-C. Leg malformations associated with the crol(3) mutation can be seen to arise from defects in imaginal disc morphogenesis during prepupal stages. This approach provides a new tool for characterizing the dynamic morphological changes that occur during metamorphosis in both wild-type and mutant animals.  相似文献

Orthologs of the Hox genes Sex combs reduced ( Scr) and proboscipedia ( pd) are active in the developing labial appendages of all insect species tested. The remarkable variation among insect gnathal structures, particularly in the distal podomeres, suggests two Hox genes may enhance the adaptive potential of gnathal appendage morphology. Functional studies in the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster, the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum and the milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus show that cooperation between Scr and pb has been generally conserved, but specific mechanisms have been altered during evolution. Cross-regulation of pb by Scr is evident in Drosophila and Tribolium, the more closely related of the three species, but not in Oncopeltus. In all three species, pb function is restricted to the distal podomeres, but details are only known for Drosophila and Oncopeltus, two species exhibiting specialized stylate-haustellate mouthparts. Drosophila pb is required for distal Scr expression, and to repress the appendage patterning genes dachshund and Distal-less ( Dll). Oncopeltus pb has the novel capacity to specify leg fates. Little is known about distal functions of Tribolium pb. Hypomorphic mutations of the Tribolium pb ortholog maxillopedia can be arranged in a graded phenotypic series of palp to leg transformations along both the proximodistal and dorsoventral axes. Mid-embryonic expression profiles of Tribolium pb, Scr, wingless ( wg) and Dll genes were examined in maxillopedia hypomorphic and null mutant backgrounds. Levels of pb and Scr are significantly reduced in the distal appendage field. Tribolium pb therefore positively regulates distal Scr expression, a role that it has in common with Drosophila pb. Tribolium wg is normally down-regulated in the distal domain of the embryonic gnathal appendage buds. It becomes activated distally in maxillopedia hypomorphs. Repression of wg by pb has not been reported in the labial imaginal discs of Drosophila. Alterations of Tribolium Scr and wg expression occur in Dll-expressing cells, however, unlike in Drosophila labial imaginal discs, Dll expression appears unaffected in pb hypomorphic backgrounds. We conclude that the Hox genes Sex combs reduced and proboscipedia control an appendage organizer and cell autonomous fate determination during embryonic labial palp development in Tribolium.  相似文献

Type X collagen has so far not been reported to occur in human intervertebral discs. The objective of this study was therefore to investigate the occurrence of type X collagen in human lumbar intervertebral discs during ageing and degeneration. Ninety intervertebral discs with adjacent endplates were excised in toto from individuals (0–86 years) without known spinal disease and were processed for routine decalcified histology. Appropriate slices of each disc were processed for immunohistochemistry using a type-spec ific, monoclonal antibody raised against human type X collagen. Each intervertebral disc was examined for macroscopic and histomorphological features of disc degeneration. Immunohistochemically, a positive specific type X staining was observed in the hypertrophic zone of the growth plate and only in the interstitial matrix of juvenile (<2 years) nucleus pulposus. In adult discs, type X collagen could be localized in conjunction with advanced disc degeneration and first occurred in the disc matrix (i.e., pericellular region) of a 47-year-old specimen. Positive type X staining of the disc matrix was more frequently found in senile (>70 years) discs with end stages of disc degeneration. This study provides the first evidence for the occurrence of type X collagen in human lumbar intervertebral discs and it appears that type X collagen is re-expressed in late stages of disc degeneration. Fragments of the imaginal wing disc of Drosophila melanogaster were cultured in adult hosts before transfer to larvae for metamorphosis. Transdetermination occurred only after at least 2 weeks of culture in vivo, producing structures of the leg, antenna, head, and thoracic spiracle. Details of the transdetermined structures and their locations with respect to normal wing disc structures are reported. We present evidence suggesting that regulation can occur between the wing and the second leg imaginal discs, and we propose that many transdeterminations which involve neighboring discs may result from such interdisc regulation.  相似文献
