Summary Colonies ofHodotermes, Microhodotermes andAnacanthotermes have major and minor workers. InHodotermes, these develop independently from different larval stages; minor workers do not transform to major workers. For each major worker there are approximately 3.7 minor workers, and the actual sizes of the two worker castes can differ greatly from colony to colony. The first pigmented worker of incipient colonies is a minor worker of the 4th instar, but in more mature colonies the instars of the workers are later and variable. Large larvae, which can produce large workers, and small larvae with patchy pigmentation, which can produce minor workers, can also undergo stationary moults.

Parental care is a major component of reproduction in social organisms, particularly during the foundation steps. Because investment into parental care is often costly, each parent is predicted to maximize its fitness by providing less care than its partner. However, this sexual conflict is expected to be low in species with lifelong monogamy, because the fitness of each parent is typically tied to the other's input. Somewhat surprisingly, the outcomes of this tug‐of‐war between maternal and paternal investments have received important attention in vertebrate species, but remain less known in invertebrates. In this study, we investigated how queens and kings share their investment into parental care and other social interactions during colony foundation in two termites with lifelong monogamy: the invasive species Reticulitermes flavipes and the native species R. grassei. Behaviors of royal pairs were recorded during six months using a non‐invasive approach. Our results showed that queens and kings exhibit unbalanced investment in terms of grooming, antennation, trophallaxis, and vibration behavior. Moreover, both parents show behavioral differences toward their partner or their descendants. Our results also revealed differences among species, with R. flavipes exhibiting shorter periods of grooming and antennation toward eggs or partners. They also did more stomodeal trophallaxis and less vibration behavior. Overall, this study emphasizes that despite lifelong monogamy, the two parents are not equally involved in the measured forms of parental care and suggests that kings might be specialized in other tasks. It also indicates that males could play a central, yet poorly studied role in the evolution and maintenance of the eusocial organization.

The evolution of the 'true' worker caste in termites is not decisively inferred by coding and mapping both this character and the foraging behaviour on a phylogenetic tree. Answering to Thompson et al. (2000, 2003), and with reference to Grandcolas and D'Haese (2002), we show that this indecisive inference depends on the correct consideration paid to the outgroups. These last ones could be non subsocial cockroaches, or some wood-eating subsocial cockroaches often considered misleadingly as living ancestors, or even any hemimetabolous insects, all of them would be unambiguously lacking 'true' worker caste and pseudergate caste and not showing the 'one-piece' life type foraging behaviour. These statements derive from observing, coding and mapping the real world on the tree without making ad hoc assumptions. In that respect, because termites do not exist in isolation, apart from the tree of life, mapping the character of interest on the tree must be applied to the outgroups as well.

We examined interspecific aggression between two subterranean termite species, Heterotermes aureus (Snyder) (Rhinotermitidae) and Gnathamitermes perplexus (Banks) (Termitidae). In laboratory tests with worker termites, neither species was the inherently superior fighter, but rather the outcome of interspecific encounters depended on the number of conspecifics. We then investigated patterns of resource use by these species during a 13-month period in the Sonoran Desert. Baits consisted of toilet-paper rolls, which have been shown to be a mutually acceptable food source. Analyses of foraging activity demonstrated that the two species did not forage independently of each other. Not only were the two species negatively associated spatially, but extended periods of temporal segregation were observed. G. perplexus took significantly longer to return to sites that it had simultaneously occupied with H. aureus than to sites that G. perplexus had occupied alone. The pattern of co-occurrence of these two species is consistent with the hypothesis that interspecific interference competition affects their spatial and temporal distribution.

SUMMARY The onset of a specialized (true) worker caste is a crucial step in the evolution of termite societies. Such workers, permanently excluded from wing development, repeatedly evolved from totipotent immatures, called false workers or pseudergates. In the family Rhinotermitidae, the presence of true workers and the level of specialization of this caste are highly variable, and key taxa illustrate transitional situations providing clues about worker evolution. Here we focused on the status of working immatures of Glossotermes oculatus , from the family Serritermitidae, now thought to represent either the sister-group of the Rhinotermitidae or a basal lineage nested within them. Contrary to previous assumptions, we show that the apterous immatures performing worker tasks in G. oculatus are the source of the single wing-budded nymphal instar preceding the alate. Consequently, they qualify as pseudergates rather than true workers. However, the sex ratio is strongly male biased in pseudergates and soldiers, which is a trait usually restricted to termites with true workers. We therefore argue that pseudergates of G. oculatus are close to a point where the species could easily shift toward the differentiation of a true worker caste, and that G. oculatus pinpoints a new possible route for the evolution of true workers from pseudergates.

Abstract.  1. Fungus-growing termites live in an obligate mutualistic symbiosis with Termitomyces fungi. The functions of the fungal symbiont have been hypothesised to differ between species and to range from highly specific roles of providing plant-degrading enzymes complementary to termite gut enzymes, to non-specific roles of providing protein-rich food to the termites.
2. Termite species with unspecialised fungal symbionts are predicted to be associated with a wider range of symbionts than species with specialised symbionts. Recent DNA data have confirmed this prediction, but evidence for differences in functional specificity has been sparse and indirect.
3. Here the consequences of symbiont interaction specificity are experimentally tested by reciprocally exchanging the fungal symbionts of sympatric colonies of Macrotermes natalensis and Odontotermes badius , which were inferred to have specialised and non-specialised symbionts respectively.
4. As expected, survival of O. badius termites on M. natalensis fungus was not significantly worse than on their own fungus, but survival of M. natalensis termites on O. badius fungus was significantly reduced.
5. This asymmetric result confirms that symbiont roles differ significantly between macrotermitine genera and indicates that symbiont transplantation experiments are a powerful tool for testing the functional details of mutualistic symbioses.

The phylogenetic study of the origin of a ‘true’ worker caste in termites by Thompson et al. [J. Evol. Biol. 13 (2000) 869] did not take into account all possibilities of character coding and character optimization on the phylogenetic tree. Actually, contrary to the authors' statements, the phylogenetic evidence presented does not permit to answer decisively most of the questions asked concerning the origin and evolution of worker castes in termites. Particular attention was paid to assumptions implied by the coding of the characters of interest, namely concerning the homology between pseudergates and a ‘true’ worker caste and the kind of the cockroach life type.

Phylogenetic analysis based on sequence variation in mitochondrial large‐subunit rRNA and cytochrome oxidase II genes was used to investigate the evolutionary relationships among termite families. Maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses of a combined nucleotide data set yield a single well‐supported topology, which is: (((((Termitidae, Rhinotermitidae), Serritermitidae), Kalotermitidae), (Hodotermitidae, Termopsidae)), Mastotermitidae). Although some aspects of this topology are consistent with previous schemes, overall it differs from any published. Optimization of ‘true’ workers onto the tree suggests that this caste originated once, early in the history of the lineage and has been lost secondarily twice. This scenario differs from the more widely accepted notion that workers are derived and of polyphyletic origin and that extant pseudergates, or ‘false’ workers, are their developmentally unspecialized ancestor caste. Worker gains and losses covary directly in number and direction with shifts in ‘ecological life type’. A test for correlated evolution which takes phylogenetic structure into account indicates that this pattern is of biological significance and suggests that the variable occurrence of a worker caste in termites has ecological determinants, apparently linked to differences in feeding and nesting habits.

Over the past 50 years, repeated attempts have been made to develop biological control technologies for use against economically important species of subterranean termites, focusing primarily on the use of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae. However, no successful field implementation of biological control has been reported. Most previous work has been conducted under the assumption that environmental conditions within termite nests would favor the growth and dispersion of entomopathogenic agents, resulting in an epizootic. Epizootics rely on the ability of the pathogenic microorganism to self-replicate and disperse among the host population. However, our study shows that due to multilevel disease resistance mechanisms, the incidence of an epizootic within a group of termites is unlikely. By exposing groups of 50 termites in planar arenas containing sand particles treated with a range of densities of an entomopathogenic fungus, we were able to quantify behavioral patterns as a function of the death ratios resulting from the fungal exposure. The inability of the fungal pathogen M. anisopliae to complete its life cycle within a Coptotermes formosanus (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) group was mainly the result of cannibalism and the burial behavior of the nest mates, even when termite mortality reached up to 75%. Because a subterranean termite colony, as a superorganism, can prevent epizootics of M. anisopliae, the traditional concepts of epizootiology may not apply to this social insect when exposed to fungal pathogens, or other pathogen for which termites have evolved behavioral and physiological means of disrupting their life cycle.

In this study, on the basis of empirical data, we have simulated the foraging tunnel patterns of two subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki and Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), using a two-dimensional model. We have defined a territory as a convex polygon containing a tunnel pattern and explored the effects of competition among termite territory colonies on the territory size distribution in the steady state that was attained after a sufficient simulation time. In the model, territorial competition was characterized by a blocking probability Pblock that quantitatively describes the ease with which a tunnel stops its advancement when it meets another tunnel; higher Pblock values imply easier termination. In the beginning of the simulation run, N=10, 20,…,100 territory seeds, representing the founding pair, were randomly distributed on a square area. When the territory density was less (N=20), the differences in the territory size distributions for different Pblock values were small because the territories had sufficient space to grow without strong competitions. Further, when the territory density was higher (N>20), the territory sizes increased in accordance with the combinational effect of Pblock and N. In order to understand these effects better, we introduced an interference coefficient γ. We mathematically derived γ as a function of Pblock and N: γ(N,Pblock)=a(N)Pblock/(Pblock+b(N)). a(N) and b(N) are functions of N/(N+c) and d/(N+c), respectively, and c and d are constants characterizing territorial competition. The γ function is applicable to characterize the territoriality of various species and increases with both the Pblock values and N; higher γ values imply higher limitations of the network growth. We used the γ function, fitted the simulation results, and determined the c and d values. In addition, we have briefly discussed the predictability of the present model by comparing it with our previous lattice model that had been used to explain the territory size distributions of mangrove termites on the Atlantic coast of Panama.

We compared the feeding excavations on wood blocks of three species of subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), and R. virginicus (Banks). Feeding rate followed the order C. formosanus > R. flavipes > R. virginicus. Wood surface area (mm2) exposed per unit feeding was higher for C. formosanus and R. flavipes than for R. virginicus. This was caused by the tendency of C. formosanus and R. flavipes to make internally penetrating tunnels, thereby increasing surface area, whereas R. virginicus made trough- and bowl-like depressions on the outside of blocks, sometimes decreasing the size of blocks outwardly without a corresponding high increase in surface area typical with the tunnels of the other species. Consequently, wood surface area was sometimes reduced, rather than increased as a result of feeding by R. virginicus. Different patterns of wood excavation suggest that these termites have divergent roles in wood decay processes.

This review is an analysis of the dimensions of termite infestation in African savannas. The aim of this work is to draw the attention of ecologists, conservationists, policy makers and farmers to the current and future threats of subterranean termites to the functioning and sustainability of such ecosystem habitats. This study analyzes and describes termite problem (questionable changes in density and assemblage structure) in selected African savannah ecosystems, synthesizes information on the effects of various human induced habitat disturbance regimes on termites’ assemblage structure, predators, nests and feed resources to generate hypotheses relating termite infestation with anthropogenic activities; it describes and critiques existing termite management practices. The review is suggestive that the infestation and resultant undesirable effects of subterranean termites in African savannahs are largely a consequence of the inappropriate savannah management practices (overgrazing, indiscriminate tree cutting and overhunting) undertaken by humans in pursuit of various livelihood options. Based on the evidence presented herein, we hypothesized that (1) human induced habitat disturbance in savanna ecosystems alters the feeding group composition of termites’ assemblages, favoring grass harvesters and polyphagus termite feeders that forage on more abundant food items, paying little attention to rarer food items and (2) habitat disturbance through activities like heavy grazing and overhunting results in decline in the populations of both macro and microscopic termite predators, which eventually enhances the proliferation of termite populations, escalates the density of termite nests particularly epigeal mounds and intensifies consumption of herbaceous savannah vegetation. The review calls for dedicated efforts to develop ecological thresholds of savannah biotic and abiotic ecosystem components in which human induced disturbance regimes trigger the destructive behavior of termites. This would provide information that will act as a precautionary savannah habitat monitoring and decision support tool to prevent future infestation of savannah habitats with termites. Also, the review shows that majority of the termite control practices are ineffective, ecologically unsustainable and above all, do not address the root cause of termite infestation and thus merely provide temporary relief to the problem. As such, termite control methods that attempt to enhance proliferation of termite predators need to be studied, developed and emphasized. This review reveals that human induced habitat disturbance depletes termites’ predator populations, leading to proliferation of termite populations particularly grass harvesters that intensify their consumption on grass biomass and eventually contribute to denudation of herbaceous vegetation cover in savannah ecosystems.

Time trends in mortality for the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, and eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), were determined for thiamethoxam and fipronil. Filter paper treated with 50 ppm thiamethoxam led to >80% mortality in 2-4 d for R. flavipes, whereas 5 ppm thiamethoxam resulted in >80% mortality in 2-3 d for C. formosanus. Filter paper treated with 1 ppm fipronil resulted in >80% mortality in 5 d for R. flavipes and 9 d for C. formosanus, indicating that thiamethoxam is faster acting than fipronil. As concentration decreases for slow-acting termiticides, the time required for adverse effects to be fully expressed increases.

Morphological diversification of workers is predicted to improve the division of labor within social insect colonies, yet many species have monomorphic workers. Individual-level selection on the reproductive capacities of workers may counter colony-level selection for diversification, and life-history differences between species (timing of caste determination, colony size, genetic variation available) may mediate the strength of this selection. We tested this through phylogenetically independent contrast analyses on a new data set for 35 ant species. Evidence was found that early divergence of queen-worker developmental pathways may facilitate the evolution of worker diversity because queen-worker dimorphism was strongly positively associated with diversity. By contrast, risks for colonies that invest in specialized workers and colony size effects on costs of worker reproduction seem unlikely to strongly affect the evolution of worker diversity because there was no significant association between colony size and diversity when controlling statistically for queen-worker dimorphism. Finally, worker diversity was greater in species with multiple lineages per colony, and it was negatively associated with relatedness in monogynous species. This could be due to high intracolonial genetic variance favoring the expression and evolution of great worker diversity or to diversity evolving more easily when there is selection for repression of worker reproduction (worker policing).

We investigated the effect of local environment on the demography and population dynamics of arctic ground squirrels ( Spermophilus parryii plesius ) by comparing reproduction, survival, and population trends of squirrels living in low elevation boreal forest and high elevation alpine tundra sites in southwestern Yukon Territory, Canada. Contrary to the trend for most birds and mammals, reproduction was significantly lower at the lower elevation and females living at higher elevation did not delay the age at which they first reproduced. Even though survival in the boreal forest was lower in summer than in the alpine, it was higher over winter so annual adult female survival was similar between sites.
Sensitivity analysis of model parameters revealed that in the forest, population growth rate (λ) was most sensitive to small changes in adult active season survival whereas for the alpine population, λ was most sensitive to changes in juvenile winter survival. In their respective habitats, these parameters also showed high year to year variation and thus contributed greatly to the population trends observed. Even though ground squirrels persisted in the boreal forest, the measured demographic rates indicate the forest was sink habitat (λ<1) and may have relied on nearby grassy meadows for immigrants. In contrast, the alpine habitat maintained a ground squirrel population in the absence of immigration (λ=1).
The variation in demographic rates between ground squirrels living at high and low elevation may arise from phenotypic responses of squirrels to different habitat structure. Arctic ground squirrels rely on sight to detect predators from a safe distance, and the boreal forest, with its lower visibility and higher predator density, appears to be suboptimal habitat.

Three subterranean termite species, Reticuliternes flavipes (Kollar), Reticulitermes tibialis Banks, and Reticulitermes virginicus (Banks), were collected from locations in northern Indiana and tested under laboratory conditions to determine whether preferential differences exist among species. Foraging behaviors and location of all three species were studied using a linear, three-dimensional assay with a soil moisture gradient (5, 15, 25, 35, 45, and 55% moisture by weight) and quantified by (1) consumption weights and (2) location counts. In a 7-d period, R. flavipes and R. tibialis consumed almost twice as much filter paper as R. virginicus. No significant difference in feeding was attributed to moisture level for R. tibialis, but there were differences for R. flavipes and R. virginicus. In terms of location of harborage, there were clear patterns associated with moisture level, as predicted using a Poisson distribution. Results from consumption and location data show unique patterns among species, and illustrate species-specific variation in feeding location and nesting preference in response to moisture. There are significant differences in movement patterns, consumption, and mortality among Indiana Reticulitermes according to the laboratory assay. These findings contribute to the overall understanding of midwestern Reticulitermes termites.

Abstract Within a 50 × 50 m area of wandoo Eucalyptus capillosa woodland in the Western Australian wheatbelt, the diversity and frequency of occurrence of wood-eating termite species was assessed at two food types. Over a 12 month period, monthly termite activity was determined: (i) at sound/undecayed artificial baits (seasoned wooden stakes of Jarrah, Karri, Pine, Batu, Oregon; Jarrah sawdust; paper rolls); and (li) at naturally occurring timber, fallen logs and branches of wandoo, in varying stages of decay. Termite diversity was 11 species at baits, 18 species at wandoo out of an overall site richness of 21 species. Karri attracted the most species (9); sawdust attracted none. At wandoo, Nasutitermes exitiosus, Coptotermes acinaciformis and Occasitermes occasus accounted for 59% of samples where termites were recorded. At baits, Heterotermes occiduus accounted for a mean of 80% of samples across bait types, but was rarely sampled at wandoo (5% of samples). Only H. occiduus, C. acinaciformis and Amitermes neogermanus ate bait. Pine, Oregon and paper rolls were most effective in attracting foraging termites in terms of highest per cent of replicates showing bait consumption and highest consumption rates. Jarrah and Batu were least attractive to foraging termites. Samples from wandoo underestimated the relative frequency of occurrence of H. occiduus within the study site. Coptotermes acinaciformis, which attack large food items, and certain species of Amitermes, which forage on subterranean food, may have been underestimated by both sampling methods. These findings indicate that a proper understanding of the structure of wood-eating termite assemblages within a given area requires a composite sampling strategy which addresses termites that eat sound or decayed wood, as well as surface and subsurface foragers.
