We report on parapatric speciation in the mormyrid fish, Pollimyrus castelnaui (Boulenger, 1911), from the Okavango and the Upper Zambezi River systems. We recognise samples from the Zambezi River as a distinct species, P. marianne, displaying an eastern phenotype of electric organ discharge (EOD) waveform (Type 3) that is distinct from the western EOD phenotype (Type 1) observed in P. castelnaui samples from the neighbouring Okavango. Samples from the geographically intermediate Kwando/Linyanti River (a tributary of the Zambezi that is also intermittently connected to the Okavango) presented a more variable third EOD phenotype (Type 2). In 13 out of 14 morphological characters studied, the Zambezi River samples differed significantly from P. castelnaui. Morphologically and in EOD characters, the Kwando/Linyanti fish are distinct from both P. castelnaui and P. marianne. Sequence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene unambiguously reveals that specimens from the Zambezi River System form a well supported taxon which clearly differs from P. castelnaui from the Okavango (1.5–2.5% sequence divergence). Within specimens from the Kwando–Zambezi System some geographic differentiation can be detected (nucleotide substitutions up to 0.6%); but groups cannot be resolved with certainty. Significant allozyme differences were found between the Okavango and all other EOD types from the Upper Zambezi System, and, within the Zambezi System, between the Kwando (Type 2) and Zambezi (Type 3) individuals. The low Wright's fixation index values, the lack of fixed allele differences, and small genetic distances provide little evidence for speciation between groups within the Zambezi System, but moderate to great fixation index values and significant allele frequency differences were observed between the Okavango and the other fishes. It is concluded that within the Zambezi System, differentiation between Kwando/Linyanti and Zambezi populations (as revealed by morphology and EOD waveform comparisons) is so recent that substantial genetic (allozyme and mitochondrial sequence) differences could not have evolved, or were not detected.  相似文献

The nominative subgenus of Schizophoria (Brachiopoda, Orthida) is represented in the Lower and Middle Devonian of Poland and of the western Ukraine by six taxa: late Emsian Schizophoria (S.) interstrialis, late Eifelian S. (S.) schnuri biscissa, early Givetian S. (S.) schnuri schnuri, middle to late Givetian S. (S.) schnuri prohibita ssp.n., middle Givetian S. (S.) parvaepunctata and late Givetian S. (S.) sp.n. (unnamed for lack of sufficient material). Morphotypes referable to S. (S.) schnuri biscissa and to S. (S.) schnuri junkerbergiana co-occur in the same outcrop (not necessarily in the same levels), wherefore the separation of these subspecies may be maintained only if they are considered as chronosubspecies (unverifiable on the studied material) but not as geographic variants (hypothesis falsified by the studied material). A lectotype for S. (S.) interstrialis and a neotype for S. (S.) parvaepunctata are selected. Punctae diameter and density (either an important systematic character according to some authors or devoid of such value according to other ones) were investigated: they show important within-individual and within-sample variation, wherefore they cannot serve to distinguish related species. On the contrary, punctae character combinations are sufficiently constant to help differentiate subgenera or groups of species. In the studied material, three clusters are distinguished on the basis of the punctae characteristics: S. (Pachyschizophoria) and S. (S.) parvaepunctata differ between each other and from all other investigated species of S. (Schizophoria); the latter are indistinguishable on the sole basis of punctae characteristics.  相似文献

The olfactory response of the sorghum plant bug, Stenotus rubrovittatus (Matsumura) (Het., Miridae), to rice, Oryza sativa L., and paddy weed, Scirpus juncoides Roxb. var. ohwianus T. Koyama, was investigated with an olfactometer to clarify the mechanism of the invasion of the bugs in paddy fields. Both adult females and males were significantly attracted to panicles of rice in the flowering and full‐ripe stages. Whole plants (aboveground parts) of rice in the panicle‐formation stage, and stems and leaves of rice in the flowering stage significantly attracted only adult females. Other rice structures tested did not attract males or females. Both males and females were attracted to the flowering spikelets of S. juncoides. Although females showed no olfactory response to stems of S. juncoides in the flowering stage, males were repelled by them. Only females were attracted to whole plants of flowering S. juncoides. Whole plants of S. juncoides in the spikelet‐formation stage significantly attracted only females. The findings suggest that the invasions of S. rubrovittatus into paddy fields are caused by their olfactory responses to the volatiles emitted from rice and some paddy weeds such as S. juncoides.  相似文献

East African and south African churchills (Petrocephalus, Mormyridae) were synonymised in 1959 to become members of a single species of subcontinental, southern African distribution, Petrocephalus catostoma (Günther, 1866). By comparison with the type material for P. catostoma from the Ruvuma River and P. stuhlmanni from the Ruvu River, both of East African origin, we confirm the South African form of churchill to represent a new species, P. wesselsi, ranging from the northern Limpopo and Incomati systems south to the Pongola River (Natal) as its southern limit. We also compared churchills from the Sabie River (25° S, South Africa, Incomati system) with churchills from the Upper Zambezi River (17° S, Namibia), using electric organ discharges (EODs) and morphology. The duration of an EOD pulse of the South African form (N = 39; 943.2±S.E. 18.82µs) is, on average, more than twice that of the Upper Zambezi form (N = 37; 436.6±15.1µs), and the amplitude of the second head-positive phase (P2 phase relative to P1 = 1) significantly weaker (0.133 ± 0.0005 vs. 0.472 ± 0.002 for Upper Zambezi males, 0.363 ± 0.03 for Upper Zambezi females). In contrast to the Upper Zambezi form, the EOD of the South African form exhibits no difference between the sexes. Fish from the two origins differ significantly in 11 out of 14 anatomical characters studied, confirming molecular genetic differentiation on the species level.  相似文献

Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) chimalapasensis n. sp. (Eoacanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae) is described from the intestine of Awaous banana (Valenciennes) (Pisces: Gobiidae) collected in the Río Negro, a tributary in the upper Río Coatzacoalcos basin, Santa María Chimalapa, Oaxaca State, Mexico. It is the third species of Neoechinorhynchus Stiles & Hassall, 1905 described from Mexican freshwater fishes, although 36 other species are known from freshwater fishes in the Americas. Like four other species of Neoechinorhynchus from freshwater fishes in North America and Mexico, N. (N.) limi Muzzall & Buckner, 1982, (N.) rutili (Müller, 1780) Stiles & Hassall, 1905, N. (N.) salmonis Ching, 1984 and N. (N.) roseus Salgado-Maldonado, 1978, males and females of the new species are less than 20 mm in length, lack conspicuous sexual dimorphism in size, have a small proboscis of about 0.1 mm in length with the largest hooks being the anteriormost, about 30–90 μm in length and of equal size, and have subequal lemnisci, larger than the proboscis receptacle but still relatively short and, in males, generally restricted to a position considerably anterior to the testes. The new species is closest to N. (N.) roseus, but it is distinguished from it by having: (1) a slightly larger cylindrical proboscis with almost parallel sides versus a globular proboscis with a rounded tip which is shorter and somewhat wider in N. (N.) roseus; (2) smaller but robust anterior proboscis hooks that do not reach the equatorial level or extend beyond the hooks of the middle circle as in N. (N.) roseus; and (3) the female gonopore situated ventrally subterminal, as opposed to being a significant distance anteriorly to the posterior extremity in N. (N.) roseus.  相似文献

Characteristics of the life history of the coral reef‐dwelling cardinalfish Siphamia tubifer, from Okinawa, Japan, were defined. A paternal mouthbrooder, S. tubifer, is unusual in forming a bioluminescent symbiosis with Photobacterium mandapamensis. The examined S. tubifer (n = 1273) ranged in size from 9·5 to 43·5 mm standard length (LS), and the minimum size at sexual maturity was 22 mm LS. The number of S. tubifer associated during the day among the spines of host urchins was 22·9 ± 16·1 (mean ± s.d .; Diadema setosum) and 3·6 ± 3·2 (Echinothrix calamaris). Diet consisted primarily of crustacean zooplankton. Batch fecundity (number of eggs; FB) was related to LS by the equations: males (fertilized eggs) FB = 27·5LS ? 189·46; females (eggs) FB = 31·3LS ? 392·63. Individual mass (M; g) as a function of LS was described by the equation: . Growth, determined from otolith microstructure analysis, was described with the von Bertalanffy growth function with the following coefficients: L = 40·8 mm LS, K = 0·026 day?1 and t0 = 23·25 days. Planktonic larval duration was estimated to be 30 days. The age of the oldest examined individual was 240 days. The light organ of S. tubifer, which harbours the symbiotic population of P. mandapamensis, increased linearly in diameter as S. tubifer LS increased, and the bacterial population increased logarithmically with S. tubifer LS. These characteristics indicate that once settled, S. tubifer grows quickly, reproduces early and typically survives much less than 1 year in Okinawa. These characteristics are generally similar to other small reef fishes but they indicate that S. tubifer experiences higher mortality.  相似文献

The importance of ecological factors such as sex lability, spatial segregation, and resource allocation in the evolution of dioecy were examined in Schiedea globosa. S. globosa is a subdioecious species with equal numbers of plants possessing strictly male or female function and a small proportion of hermaphrodites. The propensity for labile sex expression was under both environmental and genetic control; some plants with male function became hermaphroditic (by producing female flowers) under better growing conditions in the field and in the greenhouse. There was some spatial segregation of the sexes. Because of sex lability, more hermaphrodites than males occurred on moister slopes. Although there were not measurable sex-related differences in mortality within or between two flowering seasons, more females than males and hermaphrodites occurred at the bottom of slopes. Males and females produced the same number of ramets and inflorescences, but females had a greater number of flowers per inflorescence. Males and females had the same number of ovules (vestigial in males), but females had larger ovules and longer stigmas. Hermaphrodites and males had the same amount of pollen per flower despite the production of fruit by the hermaphrodites. In hermaphrodites, there was no apparent tradeoff within flowers between pollen production and ovule production. These results indicate that spatial segregation, sex lability, and environmental conditions influence allocation patterns of S. globosa, and in combination with high inbreeding depression and selling rates, may promote the further evolution of dioecy in S. globosa.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among 14 species of the subgenus Stegana are reconstructed with the combined sequences of the mitochondrial genes, ND2 (NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2) and COI (cytochrome c oxidase, subunit I). Moreover, the intra- and interspecific pairwise K-2P (Kimura's two-parameter) distances among these species are summarized, and the availability of mitochondrial markers in the species identification of the subgenus Stegana are further discussed.

The total lengths (LT) of 193 males (209–556 mm) and 130 females (275–515 mm) of Amblyraja doellojuradoi, a commercial by‐catch species on the Argentinean continental shelf, which are increasingly retained, were analysed. No sexual dimorphism was observed in the LT at which 50% of individuals were sexually mature; males matured at 448 mm and females at 411 mm, c. 80 and 82% of maximum LT. The hepato‐somatic index was similar among sexes, but significantly different between maturity stages, being lower in mature than immature specimens. Males had no seasonal difference in the hepato‐somatic index and females had the lowest index in autumn. The gonado‐somatic index was lower in males than in females and significantly higher in mature than immature specimens of both sexes. Males had the highest index in autumn and females had no seasonal difference. Collectively, these results would indicate that A. doellojuradoi breeds in autumn.  相似文献

Biological information was collected from 214 individuals of the broadfin shark Lamiopsis temminckii measuring 418 to 1782 mm total length, LT. Size at maturity (L50) for females and males was estimated at 1430 and 1368 mm LT, respectively, while mature and gravid females were observed from 1350 mm LT with litter sizes 2–8 and size at birth 418–650 mm LT. Analysis of stomach contents revealed a variety of prey, primarily crustaceans (54·0%), teleosts (42·7%) and cephalopods.  相似文献

Specimens of Callinectes danae Smith 1869 were caught in northeastern Brazil (2178 males, 2031 females); of these, 24 males and 24 females were reared for 6 months. Water temperature (T) and salinity (S) showed a significant effect on the average ecdysis in wild crab (μ), with a model obtained that was: μ = exp(?0.12268T + 0.06148S)/(1 + exp(?0.12268T + 0.06148S)). Size at morphometric maturity was significantly larger for wild males and females (9.45 and 8.38 cm, respectively) than for reared individuals (8.95 and 7.93 cm). Females of sizes above CW50 (carapace width at maturation) showed an increased ecdysis activity, whereas males showed a decrease in ecdysis frequency in sizes over CW50. Five and six molts were observed for females and males, respectively, in both wild and reared crabs; the modal classes of the reared crabs were shifted to smaller sizes. In reared females the terminal‐pubertal molt occurred at 107 days of age and at 148 days, on average, in males. The intermolt period varied from 8 to 41 days and increased with age.  相似文献

The stomach contents of eight species of predatory or omnivorous fish caught in gillnets in the Kafue River in May and June 2010 were examined to determine the relative importance, expressed as ‘prominence value’ (PV), of crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus in their diet. Four species, Clarias gariepinus, Schilbe intermedius, Serranochromis robustus and Serranochromis angusticeps, had fed on C. quadricarinatus. The PV of C. quadricarinatus was highest in C. gariepinus, in which the quantity and size of crayfish eaten was significantly correlated with standard length (SL) of fish >200 mm SL. Predated C. quadricarinatus were significantly smaller (mean carapace length [CL] 30 mm; SE 1.2) than those caught in gillnets (mean CL 76 mm; SE 0.9). No C. quadricarinatus remains were found in the stomachs of Oreochromis andersonii, Synodontis macrostigma, Serranochromis macrocephalus or Mormyrus lacerda.

The reproductive biology of the guitarfish Rhinobatos percellens was studied from 751 specimens caught by bottom pair trawlers off the coast of São Paulo, Brazil, between c. 24° 00′ S; 45° 15′ W and c. 25° 10′ S; 47° 52′ W, from September 2007 to August 2009. The total length (LT) and total mass (MT) relationship for males and females combined was MT = 1·29E‐06 LT3·15 (r = 0·99, n = 751). The mean LT of sexually mature specimens was 548 mm for males and 583 mm for females. Clasper growth was allometric and showed three distinct phases. Most claspers were calcified in specimens of c. 550 mm LT. The mean diameter of the largest oocyte was 29·8 mm, the mean ovarian fecundity was seven oocytes and ovulation occurred between August and November. Uterine fecundity ranged from two to 13 embryos (mean of five embryos). Larger females had higher litter sizes and larger embryos; the size‐at‐birth was c. 200 mm LT. The hepato‐somatic index oscillated seasonally for males and females; the gonado‐somatic index had little variation in males, but varied seasonally in females. The presence of many non‐pregnant adult females and of encapsulated eggs during two consecutive seasons suggests a resting period between gestations and the possibility of diapause.  相似文献

The geographic distribution of three closely related Hyalomma species, namely Hyalomma (Euhyalomma) truncatum Koch, 1844, Hyalomma (Euhyalomma) albiparmatum Schulze, 1919 and Hyalomma (Euhyalomma) nitidum Schulze, 1919 is confined to Africa. A detailed comparison of all stages of development of the three taxa reveals that they possess many more shared than distinguishing characters. In fact differentiation between these species is based on single or dual qualitative characters on their adults. These are a conspicuous, ivory-coloured parma on H. (E.) albiparmatum males, and the absence or reduction in clarity of ivory-coloured bands on the leg segments of H. (E.) nitidum adults, as well as the shape of the external cuticular preatrial fold of the genital operculum of females of the latter species. The adults of all three species and the larva of H. (E.) truncatum are redescribed. The nymph of H. truncatum and the larva and nymph of H. (E.) albiparmatum and H. (E.) nitidum are described for the first time. Data on their geographic distributions and hosts are provided.  相似文献

Abstract

Data are presented on the life cycles of eight species of Neolimnia, an endemic New Zealand genus of snail-killing flies. Habitats, geographical distributions, biological features of adults and immature stages, including adult and larval behaviour and feeding habits, and phenology are discussed. Larvae of subgenus Pseudolimnia live in aquatic environments; those of N. (P.) repo, N. (P.) sigma, and N. (P.) ura prey on aquatic pulmonate snails, but those of N. (P.) tranquilla prey on aquatic prosobranch snails. Larvae of Neolimnia (Neolimnia) castanea, N. (N.) irrorata, N. (N.) obscura, and N. (N.) striata live in terrestrial environments, and apparently prey overtly on terrestrial snails in nature, but will also attack aquatic snails in laboratory rearings.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in four species of rockfish genusSebastes (Scorpaenidae)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Synopsis Sexual dimorphisms, and factors influencing the evolution of these differences, have been investigated for four species of rockfish:Sebastes melanops, S. flavidus, S. mystinus, andS. serranoides. These four species, which have similar ecology, tend to aggregate by species with males and females staying together throughout the year. In all four species adult females reach larger sizes than males, which probably relates to their role in reproduction. The number of eggs produced increases with size, so that natural selection has favored larger females. It appears males were subjected to different selective pressures than females. It was more advantageous for males to mature quickly, to become reproductive, than to expend energy on growth. Other sexually dimorphic features include larger eyes in males of all four species and longer pectoral fin rays in males of the three piscivorous species:S. melanops, S. flavidus, andS. serranoides. The larger pectoral fins may permit smaller males to coexist with females by increasing acceleration and, together with the proportionately larger eye, enable the male to compete successfully with the female to capture elusive prey (the latter not necessarily useful for the planktivoreS. mystinus). Since the size of the eye is equivalent in both sexes of the same age, visual perception should be comparable for both sexes.  相似文献

The second part of the publication is devoted to the Melamphaes species (family Melamphaidae), which are characterized by 20 and more rakers on the first gill arch, by seven soft rays in the ventral fin, by absence of a temporal spine, by 14–15 rays in the pectoral fin, and by 11 abdominal vertebrae. M. polylepis is characterized by circumtropical range (Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, western and central Pacific Ocean). Newly described species M. falsidicus is described from the northern Atlantic Ocean, where it was sampled between 34°N and 58°N. Before, this species was defined as M. microps. Another newly described species, M. pachystomus, is described along the Peruvian Coast. M. macrocephalus is redescribed. This species inhabits the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (approximately between 30°N and 23°S). One of the studied specimens of M. macrocephalus was characterized by larger body size (SL = 128 mm) than was described before for this species. M. leprus is known currently by single findings from the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean (between 11°N and 4°S). This species was also found in the samples obtain in the Gulf of Guinea.  相似文献

Genetic relationships between 6 unclassified taxa and 24 known species of the genus Stylosanthes were investigated by RFLP and STS analyses. This allowed the diploid taxa used in this study to be classified into nine basal (genome) groups. Representative species in these groups included ’S. seabrana’/S. hamata (Group A), S. viscosa (Group B), S. humilis (Group C), S. macrocephala/S. bracteata (Group D), S. pilosa (Group E), S. leiocarpa (Group F), S. guianensis (Group G), S. tomentosa (Group H) and S. calcicola (Group I). Polyploid taxa used were grouped into five classes based on their putative genomic structures. These are AABB for S. scabra, S. aff. scabra, S. sericeiceps, S. aff. hamata and S. tuberculata; AACC for S. mexicana, S. subsericea, S. sundaica and S. sp.A; DDEE for S. capitata; AAFF for S. sympodialis; and AABBXX for S. erecta, with XX representing an unknown genome. Of the 6 unclassified taxa, three were diploids and 3 tetraploids. Of the 3 diploids, the genome of S. sp. was markedly distinct from those of all other diploids analysed in this study, with that of S. leiocarpa being the closest. The genome of S. sp.B was similar to that of S. humilis, with an average dissimilarity value of 15% between them. The genome of S. aff. viscosa was very similar to that of S. viscosa. Genetic variation between these 2 taxa was not larger than that within each of the 2 taxa. Of the 3 tetraploids, the genomic structure of S. sp.A was similar to those of S. mexicana, S. sundaica and S. subsericea, and the genomic structures of S. aff. scabra and S. aff. hamata were similar to those of S. scabra and S. sericeiceps.
