The distribution and function of an Aplysia cardioexcitatory peptide, NdWFamide, were examined in the nervous system of pulmonate snails. We chemically identified the authentic NdWFamide from a land snail (Euhadra congenita) and a freshwater snail (Lymnaea stagnalis). NdWFamide potentiated the heartbeat of those snails. Immunohistochemistry using anti-NdWFamide antibody demonstrated the distribution of NdWFamide-containing neurons and fibers in the central nervous system, as well as peripheral tissues, such as the cardiovascular region and accessory sex organs. These results suggest that NdWFamide is a neuropeptide mediating the neural regulation of the activity of the cardiovascular and reproductive systems of snails.  相似文献

1. The distribution of egg masses of the freshwater snails Lymnaea stagnalis and Planorbarius corneus on the undersides of water lily leaves (e.g. Nuphar lutea) is related to the prevalence of the leaf-mining beetle Galerucella nymphaeae. 2. When given the choice, Planorbarius significantly avoids leaves that were infested by the mining beetle. Conversely, Lymnaea did not discriminate against mined leaves. 3. Intact Nuphar leaves block over 95% of incident ultraviolet radiation. Yet, ultraviolet transmission reaches almost 100% under beetle mining scars. These are several times wider than snail embryos. 4. When exposed to natural sunlight, Lymnaea embryos proved to be resistant to ambient ultraviolet, while Planorbarius embryos were rapidly killed. Thus, one selective advantage of Planorbarius discrimination against mined leaves when depositing its eggs could be the avoidance of ultraviolet radiation passing through mining scars. 5. Other mining-related modifications of the leaves, reduced area, decreased longevity, altered aufwuchs (i.e. biofilm and epibionts) are discussed but seem less relevant for the oviposition preference of Planorbarius. 6. The discriminatory behaviour of this snail species was triggered by water-borne cues emitted by the damaged leaf, not by the eggs or larvae of the beetle. 7. This study illustrates how environmental stress on a given species, ultraviolet radiation in this case, can be ecologically buffered (shading by Nuphar) or enhanced (reduction of Nuphar shading through beetle mining) by associated species. It highlights how the impact of a given stress depends on the identity of the target species as well as on the identity and role of other species in the community.  相似文献

This study examines the interaction between the caudodorsal cell hormone (CDCH) and schistosomin, a peptide secreted by the central nervous system of the snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) infected with the avian schistosome Trichobilharzia ocellata. Non-infected snails were injected with synthetic as well as native CDCH in the absence or presence of purified schistosomin. The response to 2 pmol of synthetic CDCH was blocked for 90% by coinjection with 3.5 pmol of schistosomin. The ovulation-inducing activity of extracts of cerebral commissures (the storage area of native CDCH) was also blocked by schistosomin. The degree of inhibition (65%), however, was less than that observed with synthetic CDCH. These results show that schistosomin inhibits ovulation and egg laying in Lymnaea. This explains the decrease or absence of egg laying in schistosome-infected freshwater snails.  相似文献

To estimate isotopic changes caused by trematode parasites within a host, we investigated changes in the carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis infected by trematode larvae. We measured carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes within the foot, gonad, and hepatopancreas of both infected and uninfected snails. There was no significant difference in the delta13C and delta15N values of foot and gonad between infected and uninfected snails; thus, trematode parasite infections may not cause changes in snail diets. However, in the hepatopancreas, delta15N values were significantly higher in infected than in uninfected snails. The 15N enrichment in the hepatopancreas of infected snails is caused by the higher 15N ratio in parasite tissues. Using an isotope-mixing model, we roughly estimated that the parasites in the hepatopancreas represented from 0.8 to 3.4% of the total snail biomass, including the shell.  相似文献

Summary The leechGlossiphonia complanata does not appear to have substantial impact on snail populations, but this may be due to most studies focusing on adult snails rather than juvenile snails. In this study I investigated how predation rates ofG. complanata feeding on newly-hatched and juvenile snails was affected by snail species, snail size, snail density and substrate, in a laboratory experiment. Number of snails eaten increased with increasing density resulting in a type II functional response curve. Predation rates were higher when leeches were feeding onLymnaea emarginata than onPhysa gyrina, whereas there was no significant difference in predation rates when they were feeding onL. emarginata andHelisoma anceps. Sandy substrates and greater snail size resulted in decreased predation rates. Sand reduced movement speed ofG. complanata, which probably reduced encounter rates. Thus, there was a comparatively large effect of leech predation on newly-hatched snails, due to a high probability of encounter and high predation rates, but spatial and temporal refuges probably reduce the importance of leech predation as a structuring force in freshwater snail assemblages.  相似文献

The present study was focused to examine diversity and distributional pattern of freshwater snails and to identify the schistosome infected snails in ten different ponds of Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, South India. Snails were collected from native substrates in ponds using dip net from Madurai North, Tamil Nadu province of south India and microscopic examination for detecting cercariae larvae in snails were assessed. In total, 1250 individuals belonging to six species under five families of freshwater snails were collected. The alpha and beta diversity analyses were calculated for estimating the diversity of snails. The cercariae infection was observed in four collected freshwater snail species. Of four infected snails, Lymnaea luteola had the highest percentage of cercariae infection. Statistical tests showed that the environmental factors of total dissolved solids, pH and salinity were significantly related with snail distribution and cercariae infection rather than spatial factor. The study demonstrated that the salinity, conductivity and total dissolved solids of pond water play a key factor for the distribution of snails and cercariae infection. The findings of our study will improve the understanding of the dynamics of schistosomiasis transmission and would ease the implementation of integrated disease control measures based on ecological knowledge of schistosomiasis vector in Madurai and Tamil Nadu zones.  相似文献

The morphology of the different life-history stages and life-cycle of Euparyphium albuferensis are described and drawn. The freshwater snail Gyraulus chinensis (Gastropoda: Planorbidae) serves as the natural and experimental first intermediate host. This and other freshwater snails, such as Lymnaea truncatula, L. peregra, L. palustris and Physa acuta, serve as second intermediate hosts. Adult worms, possessing 45 collar spines, were obtained naturally from Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus, and experimentally from albino rats, mice and golden hamsters. Chickens, ducks and pigeons were not suitable experimental definitive hosts. E. albuferensis differs from the most closely related species, E. murinum Tubangui, 1931, in its larger body, suckers and oesophageal measurements, in the distribution of vitelline follicles and in the morphology of the collar spines.  相似文献

The molluscicidal effect of nicotinanilide was evaluated and compared with niclosamide (2',5-dichloro-4'-nitrosalicylanilide, ethanolamide salt) against different stages of the freshwater snail Lymnaea luteola i.e., eggs, immature, young mature, and adults. Calculated values of lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90) showed that both nicotinanilide and niclosamide as toxic against eggs, immature, and adults. The young mature stage of the snails was comparatively more tolerant to both molluscicides than the other stages. The toxicity of the intermediate compounds of nicotinanilide against the young mature stage of the snails showed them as ineffective. The mortality pattern of the snails exposed to LC90 concentration of these molluscicides showed niclosamide to kill faster (within 8 to 9 h) than nicotinanilide (26 to 28 h). In view of the above studies it may be concluded that both molluscicides are toxic against all the stages of the L. luteola snails.  相似文献

We studied the competitive effects within and between two taxonomically distant freshwater herbivores, a snail and a mayfly, common in Swedish lakes, Lymnaea peregra and Cloeon dipterum, respectively, and their effect on grazing in a laboratory experiment. The experimental set-up consisted of 2-l aquaria, each containing a periphyton covered tile. Intra- and interspecific effects were tested by increasing the density of one species at a time in four different treatments, (1) snails (intraspecific treatment), (2) mayflies (intraspecific treatment), (3) mixed-snails (interspecific treatments, snails kept constant) and (4) mixed-mayflies (interspecific treatments, mayflies kept constant). Intraspecific competition affected both snails and mayflies negatively, i.e. increasing mortality with increasing con-specific density. Furthermore, there was a decrease in snail growth with increasing snail density. In the mixed-species treatments both species changed their microhabitat use indicating interspecific competition. Despite this, we also found a positive effect of mayfly density on snail growth, most likely due to indirect commensalism. No density-dependent effect of grazing on periphyton was found, probably due to interference competition between grazers. However, there was a significant difference in periphyton biomass, due to species composition of grazers. Irrespective of their densities, if they co-existed, the two grazer species decreased the periphyton biomass significantly compared with both single-species treatments. We considered this as a joint action of facilitation and interaction. Our results suggest that competition can be an important structuring factor in macroinvertebrate communities and that species composition can be significant for ecosystem processes within lentic environments.  相似文献

The morphology of the different larval stages and life cycle of Hypoderaeum conoideum (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) are described. The freshwater snail species Lymnaea peregra (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) serves as the natural first intermediate host and this and L. corvus serve as experimental first intermediate hosts. These and other freshwater snails, such as Physella acuta and Gyraulus chinensis, in turn serve as second intermediate hosts. Adult worms were obtained from chicks and ducks, but not from rats, mice and golden hamsters. The morphology of the larval stages is compared with previous work on H. conoideum. Several aspects of the biology of the life history stages are described with emphasis on the transmission dynamics of the free-living stages. Differential suitability of the snail species that may act as first and/or second intermediate hosts is studied and discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Biomphalaria alexandrina snails have been used as bioindicators for freshwater qaulity and the effects of some herbicides such as butralin, glyphosate-isopropylammonium and pendimethalin). In the present study the effect of these three herbicides on snail biochemistry was examined. The results indicated that the herbicides increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in the haemolymph of B. alexandrina snails and significantly decreased total protein and albumin content. Light microscopical examinations of haemocytes monolayers of B. alexandrina snails showed three different cell types (small cells, granulocytes and hyalinocytes). All three herbicides caused abnormalities in cell shapes. Flow cytometric analysis of haemocytes from B. alexandrina demonstrated that circulating haemocyte populations could be divided into two main subtypes differing in their granularity (granulocytes or hyalinocytes) and size (large and small cells). In addition, the flow cytometric analysis showed that the total number of dead haemocytes in the haemolymph was significantly increased in treated groups compared to the control group. Phagocytosis in groups treated with the herbicides was highly significantly increased compared to the control indicating a very strong response of the treated snails. The results of the alkaline comet assay of DNA damage demonstrated that these herbicides have a genotoxic effect.  相似文献

Summary

A study was made of the effects of the photoperiod on female reproductive activities in grouped and isolated specimens of the hermaphrodite freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis. Isolation of snails rapidly increased (< 3 days) egg production. The effect was long-lasting, and was probably caused by deprivation of copulation. Changes of photoperiod had similar effects in isolated and grouped snails. Compared to the effects of isolation, the photoperiodic effects were relatively slow in appearing (> 14 days). In comparison with a medium day (MD) (12 hr light/12 hr dark), a long day (LD; 16 hr light/8 hr dark) stimulated egg production whereas a short day (SD) (8 hr light/16 hr dark) lowered egg production. The LD effects were clearer in grouped than in isolated snails, but SD effects were clearer in isolated than in grouped snails. It is argued that the effects of grouping, isolation and photoperiod on egg production are mediated by the neuroendocrine system. It is suggested that the photoperiod plays an important role in the control of the egg laying season. Mating is probably important in the control of fecundity in relation to population density.  相似文献

The impact of a drought on freshwater snail and trematode communities was investigated in a lake. Before the drought, 15 gastropod species (Valvatidae, Planorbidae, Lymnaeidae, Ancylidae, Physidae) and 10 trematode species (cercariaeum, xiphidiocercariae, echinostome, furcocercariae, notocotyle, lophocercous) were recorded. The rate of parasitism was 5.13% and there were 11 host species. The 2 major consequences of desiccation were the disappearance of snails, except Valvata piscinalis and Lymnaea peregra, and the absence of trematodes infecting the surviving snails. As soon as favourable conditions were restored, the littoral area was recolonized, first by hygrophilic and amphibious species, second by aquatic species. Nine months after the drought, the gastropod community was restored. Recolonization by the trematodes was delayed compared with that of gastropods. During the study, the overall prevalence was equal to 0.36% and only 4 trematode species and 5 host species were recorded. Because of the great variability of freshwater ecosystems, long-term studies are necessary to understand the dynamics of snail and trematode populations and determine the regulatory effect of parasitism in the field.  相似文献

Cosmopolitan species of the genus Ulva (Ulvaceae; Chlorophyta) that populate the littoral zone of marine habitats constitute a staple diet for a variety of organisms, particularly snails, shellfish, polychaetes, and birds. Occurrence of Ulva species (e.g., U. flexuosa and U . prolifera) has also been observed in freshwater inland ecosystems that have no contact with saline water. However, the influence of the development of macroalgal mats of Ulva on indigenous organisms in limnic ecosystems has not been established. This study investigates the trophic relationships between Ulva flexuosa and one species of snail from freshwater habitats in central Europe. During the summer, the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) consumed Ulva as a source of nutrition even when other algae and plants were available. Lymnaea stagnalis consumed an average of 100 mg of Ulva thalli per day. This level of biomass exceeded the consumption of an alternative food source, the shoots of Elodea canadensis. Ulva thalli are more actively consumed by great pond snails than Elodea shoots, and this is expressed in terms of the differences of biomass consumption. It was also observed that the interior of the monostromatic tubular thalli of Ulva flexuosa serves as a protective shelter for juvenile great pond snails.  相似文献

Sixteen species of aquatic snails of four families were tested by quantitative technique under standardized conditions for their suitability as intermediate hosts for Angiostrongylus cantonensis. These species were the planorbid snails Biomphalaria glabrata, Biomphalaria alexandrina, Planorbis planorbis, Planorbis intermixtus, Bulinus truncatus, Bulinus contortus, Bulinus africanus, Bulinus tropicus and Helisoma sp.; the lymnaeid snails Lymnaea natalensis, Lymnaea tomentosa, Lymnaea stagnalis, and Stagnicola elodes; the physid snail Physa acuta (an Egyptian and a German strain) and the ampullariid snails Marisa cornuarietis and Lanistes carinatus. All these snail species proved to be susceptible to infection with A. cantonensis, and first stage larvae reached the infective third stage in all of them. However, the rate and intensity of infection varied with different species. B. glabrata was the most susceptible snail species with a 100% infection rate and an average percentage recovery of third stage larvae of 26.1. This was followed by S. elodes and B. africanus, with a 100% infection rate and an average percentage recovery of third stage larvae of 15.6 and 14.6 respectively. The rest of snail species proved to be less susceptible. For comparative evaluation of the suitability of the various snail species as intermediate hosts of A. cantonensis a "Capacity Index" was determined. This index should provide a useful method for the evaluation of the suitability of various snails as intermediate hosts of nematode parasites under standardized conditions in the laboratory.  相似文献

The flatworm Platydemus manokwari (Tricladida: Rhynchodemidae) preys on various species of land snail, and its introduction to areas outside of its native range is thought to have caused the extinction of native land snails on several Pacific islands. Platydemus manokwari occurs in areas where land snails have been absent since its invasion, suggesting that the flatworm can prey on animals other than land snails. To identify the alternative prey and prey preferences of P. manokwari, I examined the feeding ecology of P. manokwari under field and laboratory conditions. Individuals were observed attacking live earthworms in a forest where land snails are already extinct, on Chichijima, Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands, Japan. I also observed them attacking earthworms and a species of isopod and land snail in the lab. To prey on the worm, similar to other earthworm-eating flatworms, P. manokwari wrapped itself around the prey and fed on it by inserting its pharynx into the earthworm’s body. Large earthworms were able to escape P. manokwari attacks by autotomy, but the autotomized body parts were eaten. Several P. manokwari individuals together attacked earthworms that were larger than themselves. The laboratory experiments showed that such gregarious attacks increased predation success on both large earthworms and land snails. The flatworms also attacked the isopods, although the predation rate was low. These results demonstrate that P. manokwari is a polyphagous predator of slow-moving soil invertebrates (land snails, slugs, earthworms, and isopods) and that invasion by P. manokwari may directly and indirectly impact native soil fauna.  相似文献

The biogenic monoamine serotonin (5-HT) has been reported to enhance egg laying in the freshwater gastropod Biomphalaria glabrata, an intermediate host for human blood flukes. Methiothepin, a vertebrate 5-HT(1/2) receptor ligand which binds with high affinity to a 5-HT receptor (5-HTlym) in Lymnaea stagnalis was tested for its ability to block egg laying in B. glabrata as a possible target for snail control. A single 30-min application of methiothepin (1 microM) was sufficient to prevent egg laying for over 1 week and did so in a dose-dependent fashion. Furthermore, single applications of methiothepin (1 microM and 10 microM) induced penile erection in a high percentage of snails tested. Latency to erection was long (at least 8 hr), but the duration of erection was long-lasting (up to 48 hr). Despite the erections, methiothepin-treated snails failed to achieve copulations. The pharmacological effect of methiothepin on both male and female reproductive processes is similar to that produced in other molluscs, and points to the gene for the 5-HT receptor mediating or modulating both or either processes as a potential target of snail control strategies. The oviposition rate of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis was determined under conditions of grouping and isolation. Isolated snails appeared to have a higher oviposition rate than animals kept in groups. The removal of a particular part of the vas deferens eliminates copulation activity completely. This technique was used to demonstrate that the reduction of the oviposition rate as a consequence of grouping is caused by mating. Further experiments revealed that this effect of mating was due to a considerable prolongation of the oviposition interval in female copulants. Since these hermaphrodite observed reduction of the oviposition rates in groups can be explained by the prolongation of the oviposition interval due to mating as a female. The lower oviposition rate is not compensated for by increased clutch size, thus an actual decrease of fecundity occurs. The effect of mating on fecundity is discussed in the context of life history tactics of freshwater snails.  相似文献

Predation and the distribution and abundance of a pulmonate pond snail   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary The abundances of a freshwater pulmonate snail, Lymnaea elodes were studied in a temporary pond and a permanent, more productive pond in northeastern Indiana, USA. When snails from both populations were reared in each of the ponds in containers excluding predators, snails grew to be 1.3 to 2 times as large in the more productive pond, and laid 9 times as many eggs. However, field sampling data showed adults to be more abundant in the temporary pond. The only obvious difference between the two ponds was the presence of the molluscivorous central mudminnow (Umbra limi) in the permanent pond. These fish fed upon L. elodes when eggs and juvenile snails were abundant. In an experiment in the temporary pond, addition of mudminnows lowered egg and juvenile snail survival in pens where snail abundances had been increased. We suggest that vertebrate predators like the mudminnow can be significant sources of mortality for thin shelled species like L. elodes, possibly excluding them from habitats like lakes and rivers.Address for offprint requests  相似文献

We have for the first time succeeded in expressing in vitro-synthesized mRNAs in both the sinistral and the dextral Lymnaea stagnalis early embryos by microinjecting the mRNAs into the eggs before the first polar body stage. Translation of exogenous mRNA in developing embryos was confirmed by expressing various fluorescent proteins; mCherry, DsRed-Express, and enhanced green fluorescent protein. We have found that the protein expression derived from the introduced exogenous mRNA largely depends on the elapsed time after the microinjection and not on the developmental stage of injection, and also on the amount of injected mRNA. Developmental abnormalities were hardly observed. The first notable fluorescent signal was detected within 2–3 h after the injection while the embryos were still in uncleaved stage. Fluorescence gradually increased until 8–9 h and was stable up to 24 h. From these results, it is suggested that there is enough translation machinery necessary for early development and the translation of injected mRNA proceeds immediately and constantly in the early embryos. This is true for both the sinistral and dextral L. stagnalis embryos. Application of the developed method to other freshwater pond snails, dextral Lymnaea peregra, sinistral Physa acuta, and sinistral Indoplanorbis exustus revealed that their early expression mechanisms to be similar to that of L. stagnalis. Thus, in vitro-synthesized mRNA expression is expected to be important for the understanding of evolutional process and the molecular mechanism underlining the handedness determination in these freshwater snail embryos.  相似文献
