Finding an appropriate functional form to describe population growth based on key properties of a described system allows making justified predictions about future population development. This information can be of vital importance in all areas of research, ranging from cell growth to global demography. Here, we use this connection between theory and observation to pose the following question: what can we infer about intrinsic properties of a population (i.e., degree of heterogeneity, or dependence on external resources) based on which growth function best fits its growth dynamics? We investigate several nonstandard classes of multi-phase growth curves that capture different stages of population growth; these models include hyperbolic–exponential, exponential–linear, exponential–linear–saturation growth patterns. The constructed models account explicitly for the process of natural selection within inhomogeneous populations. Based on the underlying hypotheses for each of the models, we identify whether the population that it best fits by a particular curve is more likely to be homogeneous or heterogeneous, grow in a density-dependent or frequency-dependent manner, and whether it depends on external resources during any or all stages of its development. We apply these predictions to cancer cell growth and demographic data obtained from the literature. Our theory, if confirmed, can provide an additional biomarker and a predictive tool to complement experimental research.  相似文献

What Can Medicine Learn from the Human DNA Sequence?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The cooperation of biochemistry with clinical medicine consists of two overlapping temporal phases. Phase 1 of the cooperation, which still is not finished, is characterized by joint work on the pathogenesis and diagnostics of systemic metabolic diseases, whereas in phase 2 the cooperation on tissue and cell specific as well as on molecular diseases is prevailing. In view of the conceptual revolution and shift in paradigm, which biochemistry and medicine are presently experiencing, the content of cooperation between the two disciplines will profoundly change. It will become deeply influenced by the results of the research into the human genome and human proteome. Biochemistry will strongly be occupied to relate the thousands of protein coding genes to the structure and function of the encoded proteins, and medicine will be concerned in finding new protein markers for diagnostics, to identify novel drug targets, and to investigate, for example, the proteomes of the variety of tumors to aid tumor classification, to mention only a few areas of interest which medicine will have in the progress of human genome research. The review summarizes the recent achievements in sequencing the human DNA as published in February 2001 by the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium and Celera Genomics and discusses their significance in respect to the further development of molecular, in particular genetic, medicine as an interdisciplinary field of the modern clinical sciences. Only biochemistry can provide the conceptual and experimental basis for the causal understanding of biological mechanisms as encoded in the genome of an organism.  相似文献

Polymorphism has been studied at the Esterase 6 locus in the Yellow Fever mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.) in laboratory stocks. At least 12 alleles are present, with up to four coexisting in a stock. The allele frequency distribution is quite sharply peaked at a mode of about 0.25. The experimental data are compared with the results of simulation based on two models, one in which the initial global distribution is taken to be the stationary distribution obtained from the neutral model assuming M = 4 mu Ne = 1 and the other in which the initial global distribution is generated from the experimental populations studied. The results suggest that the patterns observed are not likely to arise through random fluctuation of frequencies in neutral alleles, but that some kind of selection maintains polymorphism, either in the wild or in the laboratory, or both.  相似文献

Prior research suggests that young children selectively inform others depending on others’ knowledge states. Yet, little is known whether children selectively inform others depending on their own knowledge states. To explore this issue, we manipulated 3- to 4-year-old children’s knowledge about the content of a box and assessed the impact on their decisions to inform another person. Moreover, we assessed the presence of uncertainty gestures while they inform another person in light of the suggestions that children''s gestures reflect early developing, perhaps transient, epistemic sensitivity. Finally, we compared children’s performance in the informing context to their explicit verbal judgment of their knowledge states to further confirm the existence of a performance gap between the two tasks. In their decisions to inform, children tend to accurately assess their ignorance, whereas they tend to overestimate their own knowledge states when asked to explicitly report them. Moreover, children display different levels of uncertainty gestures depending on the varying degrees of their informational access. These findings suggest that children’s implicit awareness of their own ignorance may be facilitated in a social, communicative context.  相似文献

Eavesdropping involves the acquisition of information from third-party interactions, and can serve to indirectly attribute reputation to individuals. There is evidence on eavesdropping in dogs, indicating that they can develop a preference for people based on their cooperativeness towards others. In this study, we tested dogs’ eavesdropping abilities one step further. In a first experiment, dogs could choose between cooperative demonstrators (the donors) who always gave food to an approaching third person (the beggar); here, the only difference between donors was whether they received positive or negative reactions from the beggar (through verbal and gestural means). Results showed that dogs preferentially approached the donor who had received positive reactions from the beggar. By contrast, two different conditions showed that neither the beggar’s body gestures nor the verbal component of the interaction on their own were sufficient to affect the dogs’ preferences. We also ran two further experiments to test for the possibility of dogs’ choices being driven by local enhancement. When the donors switched places before the choice, dogs chose at random. Similarly, in a nonsocial condition in which donors were replaced by platforms, subjects chose at chance levels. We conclude that dogs’ nonrandom choices in the present protocol relied on the simultaneous presence of multiple cues, such as the place where donors stood and several features of the beggar’s behavior (gestural and verbal reactions, and eating behavior). Nonetheless, we did not find conclusive evidence that dogs discriminated the donors by their physical features, which is a prerequisite of reputation attribution.  相似文献

In many lineages of algae and land plants, photosynthesis was lost multiple times independently. Comparative analyses of photosynthetic and secondary nonphotosynthetic relatives have revealed the essential functions of plastids, beyond photosynthesis. However, evolutionary triggers and processes that drive the loss of photosynthesis remain unknown. Cryptophytes are microalgae with complex plastids derived from a red alga. They include several secondary nonphotosynthetic species with closely related photosynthetic taxa. In this study, we found that a cryptophyte, Cryptomonas borealis, is in a stage just prior to the loss of photosynthesis. Cryptomonas borealis was mixotrophic, possessed photosynthetic activity, and grew independent of light. The plastid genome of C. borealis had distinct features, including increases of group II introns with mobility, frequent genome rearrangements, incomplete loss of inverted repeats, and abundant small/medium/large-sized structural variants. These features provide insight into the evolutionary process leading to the loss of photosynthesis.  相似文献

Most biological models of intermediate size, and probably all large models, need to cope with the fact that many of their parameter values are unknown. In addition, it may not be possible to identify these values unambiguously on the basis of experimental data. This poses the question how reliable predictions made using such models are. Sensitivity analysis is commonly used to measure the impact of each model parameter on its variables. However, the results of such analyses can be dependent on an exact set of parameter values due to nonlinearity. To mitigate this problem, global sensitivity analysis techniques are used to calculate parameter sensitivities in a wider parameter space. We applied global sensitivity analysis to a selection of five signalling and metabolic models, several of which incorporate experimentally well-determined parameters. Assuming these models represent physiological reality, we explored how the results could change under increasing amounts of parameter uncertainty. Our results show that parameter sensitivities calculated with the physiological parameter values are not necessarily the most frequently observed under random sampling, even in a small interval around the physiological values. Often multimodal distributions were observed. Unsurprisingly, the range of possible sensitivity coefficient values increased with the level of parameter uncertainty, though the amount of parameter uncertainty at which the pattern of control was able to change differed among the models analysed. We suggest that this level of uncertainty can be used as a global measure of model robustness. Finally a comparison of different global sensitivity analysis techniques shows that, if high-throughput computing resources are available, then random sampling may actually be the most suitable technique.  相似文献

Efforts to increase affinity in the design of new therapeutic molecules have tended to lead to greater lipophilicity, a factor that is generally agreed to be contributing to the low success rate of new drug candidates. Our aim is to provide a structural perspective to the study of lipophilic efficiency and to compare molecular interactions created over evolutionary time with those designed by humans. We show that natural complexes typically engage in more polar contacts than synthetic molecules bound to proteins. The synthetic molecules also have a higher proportion of unmatched heteroatoms at the interface than the natural sets. These observations suggest that there are lessons to be learnt from Nature, which could help us to improve the characteristics of man-made molecules. In particular, it is possible to increase the density of polar contacts without increasing lipophilicity and this is best achieved early in discovery while molecules remain relatively small.  相似文献

The study investigates traditional knowledge of forest plants in a community (La Quetzal) inhabited by people who returned to Guatemala at the end of the civil war, after 10–12 years in exile in Southern Mexico, and now are in the process of constructing a new community in the Lacandon jungle in the Petén, Guatemala. We ask if the basis of knowledge and the use of natural resources change when people migrate. The relevance of vascular plant diversity for consumption and other daily needs of the population is explored. Relatively few species are presently used, with the exception of timber species, where knowledge seems to be increasing. Traditional knowledge has been maintained in certain areas such as medicine. Nature as such is regarded as important primarily as potential monetary capital and not for its subsistence capital. We find that the refugee situation has led to the introduction of global consumption patterns. Still there continues to be a dynamic local intuitive knowledge arising directly from practical experiences. Two interlinked factors have been the driving forces altering the knowledge and the use of natural resources by the people in La Quetzal: Change in the natural environment and change in the social and economic environment.

Can information sharing explain recruitment to food from communal roosts?   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The debate over whether communal nests and roosts function primarilyas information centers (they facilitate the sharing of foraginginformation) remains unresolved. Here I use evolutionary gametheory to investigate the relative importance of this influentialhypothesis and an alternative: that roosts, in particular,function as recruitment centers (they facilitate aggregationat food patches). Basing my model on juvenile common raven (Corvus corax) behavior, I assume there is no net cost to beingat food patches in groups, and foragers roost communally. Moreover,one strategic outcome is the observed raven behavior: individualssearch independently and recruit from the roost once a patchis found (they play Search-and-Recruit, or SR). I investigatethe stability of this in two scenarios that differ in the magnitudeof the lost opportunity costs to mutants playing SR in populations of other strategies. When these costs only involve a chanceof not being in a group at a located carcass, SR is the onlyevolutionarily stable strategy under all conditions. However,when these costs also include missing opportunities to be sociallydominant, SR no longer enjoys exclusive dominance in the strategyset. Nevertheless, in both cases, there are conditions where group foraging benefits have no effect on the evolutionary stabilityof SR. Thus, contrary to assertions in the literature, theopportunity to share foraging information can be sufficientto drive the evolution and maintenance of recruitment to foodfrom communal roosts. However, I conclude that both informationand grouping benefits are likely to underlie communal roostingbehavior in my focal system.  相似文献
