Multilevel crosstalk as a neural basis for motor control has been widely discussed in the literature. Since no natural process is instantaneous, any crosstalk model should incorporate time delays, which are known to induce temporal coupling between functional elements and stabilize or destabilize a particular mode of coordination. In this article, we systematically study the dynamics of rhythmic bimanual coordination under the influence of varying connection topology as realized by callosal fibers, cortico-thalamic projections, and crossing peripheral fibers. Such connectivity contributes to various degrees of neural crosstalk between the effectors which we continuously parameterize in a mathematical model. We identify the stability regimes of bimanual coordination as a function of the degree of neural crosstalk, movement amplitude and the time delays involved due to signal processing. Prominent examples include explanations of the decreased stability of the antiphase mode of coordination in split brain patients and the role of coupling in mediating bimanual coordination.  相似文献

A key problem in developmental biology is understanding the origin of morphological innovations. Comparative studies in plants with different leaf morphologies indicate that the developmental pathway defined by KNOTTED1-type homeodomain proteins could be involved in generating different leaf forms. For several decades scientific R&D has been failing communities around the world, especially in developing countries, by not producing an adequate level of benefits (for example, improved health and living standards) and essential public goods (for example, the provision of safe water, sanitation and energy). It is time for a complete overhaul of the R&D process, with a comprehensive review of the mechanisms by which R&D is financed, how and where the work and results are published and disseminated, how the results and knowledge are exploited, and how ownership is decided. This is particularly important for public goods, for which there is often no market or prospect of commercial return or profit.  相似文献

Time perception is defined as a subjective judgment on the elapsed time of an event. It can change according to both external and internal factors. There are two main paradigms of time perception; retrospective time perception (RTP) and prospective time perception (PTP). Two paradigms differ from each other according to whether the subject has knowledge on the importance of passage of time in the given task. Since RTP paradigm studies are harder to conduct, studies on RTP paradigm is far fewer than studies on PTP. Thus in the current study, both RTP and PTP paradigms are investigated. Also, time perception is discussed in relation to internal clock model and cognitive load. Emotional motion videos are used to create cognitive load and manipulate internal clock. Results showed the effect of emotion on time perception. Another major finding is that shorter videos are perceived longer whereas longer videos are perceived shorter as in accordance with Vierordt’s Law. However, there was no difference between RTP and PTP paradigms. These results indicate that emotional videos change our internal clock while a number of changes in a motion video create cognitive load causing disturbance of time perception.  相似文献

The durations of the phases of the cell cycle were measured at different levels in the jejunal crypts of male Balb/c mice. A mean cell cycle time of 12.3 h was found for the whole crypt. In cell positions 1 and 2, the cell cycle time was 16.7 h, and this time steadily decreased to a value of between 10 and 11 h for cell positions above 11. It is concluded that basally situated crypt cells in the mouse are cycling relatively slowly, and that they form the functional stem cell pool for the crypt. These cells may also compose the potential stem cell pool which repopulates the crypt after death of proliferative cells.  相似文献

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a movement disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and the formation of intraneuronal inclusions called Lewy bodies, which are composed mainly of α-synuclein (α-syn). Selegiline (Sel) is a noncompetitive monoamino oxidase B inhibitor that has neuroprotective effects and has been administered to PD patients as monotherapy or in combination with l-dopa. Besides its known effect of increasing the level of dopamine (DA) by monoamino oxidase B inhibition, Sel induces other effects that contribute to its action against PD. We evaluated the effects of Sel on the in vitro aggregation of A30P and wild-type α-syn. Sel delays fibril formation by extending the lag phase of aggregation. In the presence of Sel, electron microscopy reveals amorphous heterogeneous aggregates, including large annular species, which are innocuous to a primary culture enriched in dopaminergic neurons, while their age-matched counterparts are toxic. The inhibitory effect displayed by Sel is abolished when seeds (small fibril pieces) are added to the aggregation reaction, reinforcing the hypothesis that Sel interferes with early nuclei formation and, to a lesser extent, with fibril elongation. NMR experiments indicate that Sel does not interact with monomeric α-syn. Interestingly, when added in combination with DA (which favors the formation of toxic protofibrils), Sel overrides the inhibitory effect of DA and favors fibrillation. Additionally, Sel blocks the formation of smaller toxic aggregates by perturbing DA-dependent fibril disaggregation. These effects might be beneficial for PD patients, since the sequestration of protofibrils into fibrils or the inhibition of fibril dissociation could alleviate the toxic effects of protofibrils on dopaminergic neurons. In nondopaminergic neurons, Sel might slow the fibrillation, giving rise to the formation of large nontoxic aggregates.  相似文献

Background

How do we estimate time when watching an action? The idea that events are timed by a centralized clock has recently been called into question in favour of distributed, specialized mechanisms. Here we provide evidence for a critical specialization: animate and inanimate events are separately timed by humans.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In different experiments, observers were asked to intercept a moving target or to discriminate the duration of a stationary flash while viewing different scenes. Time estimates were systematically shorter in the sessions involving human characters moving in the scene than in those involving inanimate moving characters. Remarkably, the animate/inanimate context also affected randomly intermingled trials which always depicted the same still character.

Conclusions/Significance

The existence of distinct time bases for animate and inanimate events might be related to the partial segregation of the neural networks processing these two categories of objects, and could enhance our ability to predict critically timed actions.  相似文献

In this paper we focus on the problem of making short and medium term forecasts of CPU availability on timeshared Unix systems. We evaluate the accuracy with which availability can be measured using Unix load average, the Unix utility vmstat, and the Network Weather Service CPU sensor that uses both. We also examine the autocorrelation between successive CPU measurements to determine their degree of selfsimilarity. While our observations show a longrange autocorrelation dependence, we demonstrate how this dependence manifests itself in the short and medium term predictability of the CPU resources in our study.  相似文献

Recordings of the membrane potential from a bursting neuron were used to reconstruct the phase curve for that neuron for a limited set of perturbations. These perturbations were inhibitory synaptic conductance pulses able to shift the membrane potential below the most hyperpolarized level attained in the free running mode. The extraction of the phase resetting curve from such a one-dimensional time series requires reconstruction of the periodic activity in the form of a limit cycle attractor. Resetting was found to have two components. In the first component, if the pulse was applied during a burst, the burst was truncated, and the time until the next burst was shortened in a manner predicted by movement normal to the limit cycle. By movement normal to the limit cycle, we mean a switch between two well-defined solution branches of a relaxation-like oscillator in a hysteretic manner enabled by the existence of a singular dominant slow process (variable). In the second component, the onset of the burst was delayed until the end of the hyperpolarizing pulse. Thus, for the pulse amplitudes we studied, resetting was independent of amplitude but increased linearly with pulse duration. The predicted and the experimental phase resetting curves for a pyloric dilator neuron show satisfactory agreement. The method was applied to only one pulse per cycle, but our results suggest it could easily be generalized to accommodate multiple inputs.  相似文献

Previous anatomical and physiological studies have implicated the lateral habenula, and especially its medial division (LHbM), as a candidate component of the circadian timing system in rodents. We assayed lateral habenula rhythmicity in rodents using c-FOS immunohistochemistry and found a robust rhythm in immunoreactive cell counts in the LHbM, with higher counts during the dark phase of a light-dark (LD) cycle and during subjective night in constant darkness. We have also observed an obvious asymmetry of c-FOS expression in the LHbM of behaviorally "split" hamsters in constant light, but only during their active phase (when they were running in wheels). Locomotor activity rhythms appear to be regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) via multiple output pathways, one of which might be diffusible while the other might be neural, involving the lateral habenula.  相似文献

The body mass index (BMI) is often used as a predictor of overweight and obesity. There is, however, an important debate among international specialists as to what the risk limits should be, and where the cut-off points should be located. In the United States, for instance, adults with a BMI between 25 and 30 are considered overweight, while adults with a BMI of 30 or higher are considered obese. Nevertheless some researchers, especially in developing countries, claim that the limits established for the US are too permissive, and that the threshold to define obese adults should be set lower for other nationalities and ethnicities. This paper analyzes the mortality risks for different BMI levels of two populations of American adult men. The first population lived during the last quarter of the 19th century and the early 20th century. These men were drawn from a random sample of Union Army veterans who fought during the American Civil War (1861-1865). A contemporary sample of men was drawn from the first wave of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) conducted between 1971 and 1975. The results indicate that the frontier of overweight and obesity are expanding over time, such that the potential risk is nowadays associated with higher levels of BMI. The finding may imply that differences in BMI cut-off points are not only cross ethnic, but also occur for similar ethnicities across time.  相似文献

Time–place learning based on food association was investigated in the fish Nile tilapia. During a 30-day period, food was placed at one side of the aquarium (containing three compartments) in the morning and at the opposite side in the afternoon. Learning was inferred by the number of correct side choices of all fish in each day of test (15th, 30th). During the test day, fish were not fed. The Nile tilapia did not learn to switch sides at the correct day period in order to get food, suggesting thus that this species does not have time–place learning ability.  相似文献

Models occupy an essential position in the study of infectious disease as a result of the ethical problems of exposing humans to potentially lethal agents. Deliberately induced infections in well-defined animal models provide much useful information about disease processes in an approximation of their natural context. Despite this, animal models are not the natural disease process, and recent experimental advances show, perhaps not unsurprisingly, that there are large differences between natural infections and animal models. Focusing on mouse models of bacterial pathogens, we discuss some of these discrepancies and suggest ways of improving model systems in the future.  相似文献

Relationships of the indices of intelligence and the accuracy of time perception with the level of cortical interactions in the γ frequency band, as well as the phase ratios between the γ rhythm and low-frequency EEG components have been established.
