Genetic growth curves of boars in a test station were predicted on daily weight records collected by automated weighing scales. The data contained 121 865 observations from 1477 Norwegian Landrace boars and 108 589 observations from 1300 Norwegian Duroc boars. Random regression models using Legendre polynomials up to second order for weight at different ages were compared for best predicting ability and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) for both breeds. The model with second-order polynomials had best predictive ability and BIC. The heritability for weight, based on this model, was found to vary along the growth trajectory between 0.32-0.35 for Duroc and 0.17-0.25 for Landrace. By varying test length possibility to use shorter test time and pre-selection was tested. Test length was varied and compared with average termination at 100 kg, termination of the test at 90 kg gives, e.g. 2% reduction in accuracy of estimated breeding values (EBV) for both breeds and termination at 80 kg gives 5% reduction in accuracy of EBVs for Landrace and 3% for Duroc. A shorter test period can decrease test costs per boar, but also gives possibilities to increase selection intensity as there will be room for testing more boars.  相似文献

To study genetic variation in meat quality traits measured by rapid methods, data were recorded between 2005 and 2008 on samples of M. longissimus dorsi (LD) in Landrace (n = 3838) and Duroc (n = 2250) pigs included in the Norwegian pig breeding scheme. In addition, ultimate pH levels in the glycolytic LD (loin muscle) and M. gluteus medius (GM, ham muscle), and in the oxidative m. gluteus profundus (GP, ham muscle) were recorded as an extended data set (n = 16 732 and n = 7456 for Landrace and Duroc, respectively) from 1998 to 2008. Data were analysed with a multi-trait animal model using AI-REML methodology. Meat from Duroc had considerably more intramuscular fat (IMF), less moisture and protein, appeared darker with higher colour intensity and had lower drip loss than meat from Landrace. The heritability estimates (s.e. 0.01 to 0.07) for pH in LD (0.19 and 0.27 for Landrace and Duroc, respectively), GM (0.12 and 0.22) and GP (0.19 and 0.38), drip loss (0.23 and 0.33), colour values: L* (lightness) (0.41 and 0.28), a* (redness) (0.46 and 0.43), b* (yellowness) (0.31 and 0.33), IMF (0.50 and 0.62), muscle moisture (0.31 and 0.50) and muscle protein content (0.40 and 0.54) in LD all demonstrated moderate-to-high genetic variation for these traits in both breeds. Near infrared spectroscopy and EZ-DripLoss are modern technologies used in this study for the determination of chemical components and drip loss in meat. These methods gave higher heritabilities than more traditional methods used to measure these traits. The estimated genetic correlations between moisture and IMF in Duroc, and pH and drip loss in Duroc were both -0.89. Interesting differences between the two breeds in numerical value of some genetic correlations were observed, probably reflecting the differences in physiology and selection history between Landrace and Duroc. The estimated genetic correlation between drip loss and pH was much stronger in Duroc than in Landrace (-0.89 and -0.63, respectively). This might be due to the high pH in Duroc, whereas Landrace had a lower pH closer to the iso-electric point for muscle proteins. The positive genetic correlation between the L* value in meat and IMF in Duroc (0.50) was an effect of differences in visible marbling, rather than meat colour. For Landrace, this correlation was negative (-0.20). IMF content showed favourable genetic correlations to drip loss (-0.36 and -0.35 for Landrace and Duroc, respectively).  相似文献

Melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) is expressed in the appetite-regulating areas of the brain where it is central in the regulation of feed intake and energy balance. A mutation in MC4R causing an Asp298Asn substitution has been associated with fatness, high daily gain and feed intake in the pig. In a previously performed genome scan based on a Hampshire x Landrace cross, we detected one quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting carcass fat/meat ratio and one QTL affecting the biceps femoris muscle, both close to the position of MC4R on porcine chromosome 1. In this study, the two lines were found to be close to fixation for alternative alleles of the Asp298Asn polymorphism. Additional QTL analyses supported our hypothesis of MC4R as a positional candidate gene but only for the fat/meat QTL. The Asp298Asn polymorphism was also evaluated as a selection target for daily gain in a Danish pig breeding population that included four breeds (Hampshire, Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire). Over a 12-year period (1990-2002), a significant increase in the allele frequency of 298Asn was found in Landrace and Duroc, whereas a non-significant decrease in the 298Asn allele frequency was observed in Yorkshire. The Hampshire breed was fixed for the 298Asn allele in 1990. The high 298Asn allele frequencies in Hampshire, Landrace and Duroc are most likely due to selection for daily gain, whereas selection for daily gain in the Yorkshire breed apparently focuses on other loci.  相似文献

In this study, heritabilities and (co)variance components for body weight at 100 days (BW), muscle depth (MD) and fat depth (FD) were estimated for Suffolk, the most common sheep breed in the Czech Republic. Data from 1996 to 2004 were extracted from the sheep recording database of the Czech Sheep and Goat Breeding Association. Genetic parameters were estimated using multivariate animal models, including both direct and maternal genetic effects and permanent environmental effects. Average values for BW, MD and FD were 27.91 kg, 25.5 mm and 3.3 mm, respectively. Direct and maternal heritability for BW were 0.17 and 0.08, respectively, and direct heritabilities were 0.16 for MD and 0.08 for FD. Maternal heritability estimates for ultrasonic measurements were generally low. Direct genetic correlations between BW and MD and maternal genetic correlations between BW and MD were positive and favourable. Both direct genetic correlations between BW and FD and maternal genetic correlations between BW and FD were negative, but not significantly different from zero. The favourable genetic correlations between BW and MD make ultrasound measurements a valuable tool in breeding programs focusing on growth and carcass characteristics.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the genetic background of longitudinal residual feed intake (RFI) and BW gain in farmed mink using random regression methods considering heterogeneous residual variances. The individual BW was measured every 3 weeks from 63 to 210 days of age for 2139 male+female pairs of juvenile mink during the growing-furring period. Cumulative feed intake was calculated six times with 3-week intervals based on daily feed consumption between weighing’s from 105 to 210 days of age. Genetic parameters for RFI and BW gain in males and females were obtained using univariate random regression with Legendre polynomials containing an animal genetic effect and permanent environmental effect of litter along with heterogeneous residual variances. Heritability estimates for RFI increased with age from 0.18 (0.03, posterior standard deviation (PSD)) at 105 days of age to 0.49 (0.03, PSD) and 0.46 (0.03, PSD) at 210 days of age in male and female mink, respectively. The heritability estimates for BW gain increased with age and had moderate to high range for males (0.33 (0.02, PSD) to 0.84 (0.02, PSD)) and females (0.35 (0.03, PSD) to 0.85 (0.02, PSD)). RFI estimates during the growing period (105 to 126 days of age) showed high positive genetic correlations with the pelting RFI (210 days of age) in male (0.86 to 0.97) and female (0.92 to 0.98). However, phenotypic correlations were lower from 0.47 to 0.76 in males and 0.61 to 0.75 in females. Furthermore, BW records in the growing period (63 to 126 days of age) had moderate (male: 0.39, female: 0.53) to high (male: 0.87, female: 0.94) genetic correlations with pelting BW (210 days of age). The result of current study showed that RFI and BW in mink are highly heritable, especially at the late furring period, suggesting potential for large genetic gains for these traits. The genetic correlations suggested that substantial genetic gain can be obtained by only considering the RFI estimate and BW at pelting, however, lower genetic correlations than unity indicate that extra genetic gain can be obtained by including estimates of these traits during the growing period. This study suggests random regression methods are suitable for analysing feed efficiency and BW gain; and genetic selection for RFI in mink is promising.  相似文献

The difficulties and costs of measuring individual feed intake in dairy cattle are the primary factors limiting the genetic study of feed intake and utilisation, and hence the potential of their subsequent industry-wide applications. However, indirect selection based on heritable, easily measurable, and genetically correlated traits, such as conformation traits, may be an alternative approach to improve feed efficiency. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic and phenotypic correlations among feed intake, production, and feed efficiency traits (particularly residual feed intake; RFI) with routinely recorded conformation traits. A total of 496 repeated records from 260 Holstein dairy cows in different lactations (260, 159 and 77 from first, second and third lactation, respectively) were considered in this study. Individual daily feed intake and monthly BW and body condition scores of these animals were recorded from 5 to 305 days in milk within each lactation from June 2007 to July 2013. Milk yield and composition data of all animals within each lactation were retrieved, and the first lactation conformation traits for primiparous animals were extracted from databases. Individual RFI over 301 days was estimated using linear regression of total 301 days actual energy intake on a total of 301 days estimated traits of metabolic BW, milk production energy requirement, and empty BW change. Pair-wise bivariate animal models were used to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters among the studied traits. Estimated heritabilities of total intake and production traits ranged from 0.27±0.07 for lactation actual energy intake to 0.45±0.08 for average body condition score over 301 days of the lactation period. RFI showed a moderate heritability estimate (0.20±0.03) and non-significant phenotypic and genetic correlations with lactation 3.5 % fat-corrected milk and average BW over lactation. Among the conformation traits, dairy strength, stature, rear attachment width, chest width and pin width had significant (P<0.05) moderate to strong genetic correlations with RFI. Combinations of these conformation traits could be used as RFI indicators in the dairy genetic improvement programmes to increase the accuracy of the genetic evaluation of feed intake and utilisation included in the index.  相似文献

This study investigated the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the porcine growth hormone (pGH) gene in Duroc, Landrace, and Tao-Yuan pigs and its effects on growth performance and levels of plasma growth hormone in peripheral circulation. Genomic DNA extracted from 81 Tao-Yuan, 60 Landrace and 48 Duroc pigs were subjected to Southern blot hybridization with a pGH cDNA probe. Polymorphism was detected with the restriction enzymes TaqI and DraI. A comparison of these three breeds showed significant differences in allelic frequencies. Blood samples for radioimmunoassay (RIA) of GH were collected biweekly during the experimental period from pigs 12 to 40 weeks of age. Tao-Yuan pigs showed a mean plasma GH level (2.51 +/- 1.23 ng/mL) that was much lower than that of the Landrace (3.80 +/- 1.52 ng/mL) and Duroc (4.20 +/- 1.03 ng/mL) pigs (P < 0.05). Moreover, the Tao-Yuan pigs also showed poorer growth performance than the Landrace and the Duroc pigs both in the daily weight gain (0.37 +/- 0.06 vs. 0.67 +/- 0.05 and 0.70 +/- 0.05 kg/day, P < 0.01) and feed efficiency (3.12 +/- 0.28 vs. 2.60 +/- 0.14 and 2.52 +/- 0.12, P < 0.05). These results suggest that the growth performance trait in these pigs is highly correlated with their growth hormone genotype.  相似文献

采用PCR-SSCP方法检测了约克夏、杜洛克、皮特兰、长白猪、嘉兴黑猪和金华猪6个品种共169头猪的SIM1基因外显子8的SNP及其基因型频率。结果共发现CC、CT、TT 3种基因型, 其基因型频率在国内外猪品种之间具有较大差异。其中, 国内猪种嘉兴黑猪和金华猪只存在TT基因型, 而国外猪种约克夏、杜洛克、皮特兰、长白猪则都存在3种基因型。用最小二乘法分析SNP对长白猪、约克夏猪和杜洛克猪的背膘厚的效应的结果表明, 纯合基因型个体的背膘厚大于杂合基因型个体。SIM1基因型对国外猪种背膘厚有显著效应(P< 0.05), 并且不同部位效应不同。  相似文献

Fatness in pigs is of prime economic importance due to market incentives for production of lean pork and elevated fatness increasing the feed costs. Leptin (LEP) action, mediated through its specific receptors (LEPR), was reported to be involved in the regulation of fatness via feed intake, energy expenditure, and whole-body energy balance in pigs. In this study, we have designed 17 primer sets based on the human and mouse LEPR sequences and successfully amplified coding regions of 15 porcine LEPR exon fragments by polymerase chain reactions (PCR). Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of Intron 2, Exons 2, 6, and 18 were found in Landrace, Yorkshire, and Duroc by mutagenetically separated-PCR (MS-PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RFLP). Chi-square statistics was used to calculate homogeneity of genotypic frequencies of 4 gene polymorphisms for three breeds of animals. Effects of Intron 2, Exon 2, and Exon 18 polymorphisms on the reproduction trait such as litter sizes of sows were evident (p < 0.05) in Duroc and Yorkshire. There was no (p > 0.05) significant influence on the production trait of average daily gain due to four candidate gene polymorphisms in three porcine breeds. However, effects of Exon 6 and 18 polymorphisms on the production trait of backfat thickness were significant (p < 0.05) in Landrace and Yorkshire, respectively. Effects of Exon 18 polymorphisms on feed efficiency were also evident (p < 0.05) in Duroc.  相似文献

In this study, computed tomography (CT) technology was used to measure body composition on live pigs for breeding purposes. Norwegian Landrace (L; n = 3835) and Duroc (D; n = 3139) boars, selection candidates to be elite boars in a breeding programme, were CT-scanned between August 2008 and August 2010 as part of an ongoing testing programme at Norsvin's boar test station. Genetic parameters in the growth rate of muscle (MG), carcass fat (FG), bone (BG) and non-carcass tissue (NCG), from birth to ~100 kg live weight, were calculated from CT data. Genetic correlations between growth of different body tissues scanned using CT, lean meat percentage (LMP) calculated from CT and more traditional production traits such as the average daily gain (ADG) from birth to 25 kg (ADG1), the ADG from 25 kg to 100 kg (ADG2) and the feed conversion ratio (FCR) from 25 kg to 100 kg were also estimated from data on the same boars. Genetic parameters were estimated based on multi-trait animal models using the average information-restricted maximum likelihood (AI-REML) methodology. The heritability estimates (s.e. = 0.04 to 0.05) for the various traits for Landrace and Duroc were as follows: MG (0.19 and 0.43), FG (0.53 and 0.59), BG (0.37 and 0.58), NCG (0.38 and 0.50), LMP (0.50 and 0.57), ADG1 (0.25 and 0.48), ADG2 (0.41 and 0.42) and FCR (0.29 and 0.42). Genetic correlations for MG with LMP were 0.55 and 0.68, and genetic correlations between MG and ADG2 were -0.06 and 0.07 for Landrace and Duroc, respectively. LMP and ADG2 were clearly unfavourably genetically correlated (L: -0.75 and D: -0.54). These results showed the difficulty in jointly improving LMP and ADG2. ADG2 was unfavourably correlated with FG (L: 0.84 and D: 0.72), thus indicating to a large extent that selection for increased growth implies selection for fatness under an ad libitum feeding regime. Selection for MG is not expected to increase ADG2, but will yield faster growth of the desired tissues and a better carcass quality. Hence, we consider MG to be a better biological trait in selection for improved productivity and carcass quality. CT is a powerful instrument in conjunction with breeding, as it combines the high accuracy of CT data with measurements taken from the selection candidates. CT also allows the selection of new traits such as real body composition, and in particular, the actual MG on living animals.  相似文献

The leptin gene (LEP) is considered as a functional candidate for production traits in livestock due to its crucial role in energy homeostasis. Because polymorphisms in regulatory sequences may affect gene expression, we searched for them in the 3′UTR of LEP and analyzed their association with production traits. Four breeds and a composite line were studied. In the Polish Landrace and Polish Large White breeds, 8 SNPs and 1 indel were observed; whereas, in the Duroc breed, 9 specific SNPs were found. Pietrain and Line 990 were monomorphic. One SNP (g.+168C>T), observed in the Duroc breed only, was located within a target site for microRNA (miR-9). Association studies showed a weak association between one SNP (c.+846C>T) and abdominal fat weight in the Polish Landrace only. Thus, we concluded that contribution of polymorphisms in the 3′UTR to phenotypic variability of pig production traits is marginal. Moreover, we presented an overview of known polymorphisms (128) in the pig leptin gene.  相似文献

Genetic evaluation of Piétrain sires in Flanders occurs under standardized conditions, on test stations with fixed dam breeds, standardized diets and uniform management practices. As environmental conditions vary on commercial farms and differ from the test stations, this study aimed at understanding to what extent the sire, the dam breed and the interaction between both affects the translation of breeding values to practice. Dams of two commercial breeds were inseminated with semen from one of five different sires selected for contrasting breeding values (daily gain, feed conversion ratio and carcass quality). For each sire by dam breed combination, six pen replicates (with three gilts and three barrows per pen) were evaluated for growth performance from 9 weeks of age (20 kg) to slaughter (110 kg), and for carcass and meat quality. In our experimental setup, both sire and dam breed affected growth, carcass and meat quality traits. No significant sire×dam breed interactions on performance could be detected. Though a tendency for interaction on average daily feed intake between 20 and 110 kg (P=0.087), and on pork colour (lightness) (P=0.093) was present. In general, offspring of all tested sires behaved similarly in both dam breeds, indicating that estimated breeding values for Piétrain sires determined in one dam breed are representative in other dam breeds as well.  相似文献

Four polymorphisms in the swine leptin (LEP) gene were characterized and evaluated for association with economically important production traits in Yorkshire, Landrace and Duroc pigs. Our results show that these polymorphisms are generally of low frequency or are absent in pig populations. Two polymorphisms (A2845T and T3469C) may be associated (P < 0.0078) with feed intake and growth rate traits in Landrace pigs.  相似文献

Little is known about the relationship between feed intake behaviour and cholesterol levels in humans. This can be attributed to the fact that feed intake behaviour in humans is difficult to assess. The relationships between feed intake, feed efficiency and feed intake behaviour, and cholesterol and triglyceride levels were investigated at an average age of 187 days, in a pig model consisting of 202 Duroc barrows. Feed intake and feed intake behaviour were recorded individually and daily by means of an electronic identification system. Animals with high levels of total cholesterol also had high levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides. Animals with high levels of HDL also had high levels of LDL and triglycerides, and animals with high levels of LDL also had high levels of triglycerides. Animals with higher BW, higher backfat thickness, higher BW gain, higher gain of backfat deposition, higher feed intake, higher residual feed intake (RFI) and higher feed intake rate had higher levels of total, HDL and LDL plasma cholesterol. Results indicate that the relationship between feed intake and cholesterol levels is a long-term relationship, while the relationship between RFI and cholesterol levels is more of a short-term nature. The relationship between intake rate and cholesterol plasma levels disappeared after correction for the amount of feed consumed. Results indicate that feed intake independent of metabolic BW, growth and fatness, i.e. 'RFI', was positively correlated with cholesterol plasma levels. This suggests that eating food over and above the maintenance and growth requirements constitutes a health risk independent of the level of fatness.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for feed intake recorded as farmers’ perception of young sows’ appetite for the first 3 weeks of lactation (APP) and feed intake recorded for one day in the 3rd week of lactation (FEED), litter weight (LW) at 3 weeks, sow body condition at weaning (BC) and the following five reproduction traits: weaning-to-service interval of 1 to 7 days (WSI7), weaning-to-service interval of 1 to 50 days (WSI50), delayed service or not (DELAYED), pregnant on first service or not (PREGNANT) and litter size in 2nd parity (NBT2). The analyses included data on 4606 Norwegian Landrace 1st-parity sows and their litters. The Gibbs sampling method was used. The traits DELAYED and PREGNANT were analysed as threshold traits and APP, FEED, LW, BC, WSI7, WSI50 and NBT2 were analysed as linear traits. The heritability estimates for APP and FEED were low (<0.1), whereas the estimates for DELAYED and PREGNANT were rather high (0.4 and 0.3). The heritability estimate for BC was 0.2. The genetic correlations confirmed the complexity of breeding for sow performance; selection for heavy 1st litters may lead to lower body condition at weaning, which in turn leads to lower reproductive performance and smaller litters in 2nd parity. Selection for higher sow feed intake would improve body condition, but the simple way of measuring feed intake tested in this study (APP and FEED) cannot be recommended because of the low heritability obtained for these traits.  相似文献

Sequence analysis of PCR products of a 343-bp fragment from exon 29 of the porcine APOB gene of four Erhualian and four Landrace pigs revealed a missense G/C substitution at position of 6117 in this gene. Two allele-specific primers were designed to genotype this polymorphism using the Bi-PASA technique. Genotyping of 146 animals from Erhualian, Hampshire, Large White, Landrace and Duroc breeds revealed large breed differences in allele frequency. No association with fatness was observed within each of the four European breeds, where animals had been selected to be those with the highest and those with the lowest backfat depth at 100 kg liveweight from a large carcass dissection project.  相似文献

利用测序、PCR-RFLP和PCR-SSCP等技术对杜洛克、长白、大白猪MC1R基因进行研究发现了5个多态位点。其中,668位点G→C突变发生在5′UTR,其余4个多态位点nt894insCC(894位点CC插入),1318C→T,1554G→A和1197G→A发生在编码区。nt894insCC导致编码蛋白过早终止。1318C→T,1554G→A和1197G→A突变分别导致a164Val,Ala243Thr和Asp124Asn氨基酸的改变。所有长白、大白猪个体在894位点均存在CC插入,其余多态位点基因型分别为668GG,1197AA,1318CC,1554GG。所有杜洛克个体在894位点均不存在CC插入,其余多态位点基因型分别为668CC,1197GG,1318TT,1554AA。所有突变位点无杂合子出现。由此可以推测,668G→C,1318C→T和1554G→A可能与杜洛克的红毛色存在相关,导致1197G→A突变无意义的894位点CC插入可能与长白、大白猪白毛色存在相关。  相似文献

Feeding costs represent one of the highest expenditures in animal production systems. Breeding efficient animals that express their growth potential while eating less is therefore a major objective for breeders. We estimated the genetic parameters for feed intake, feed efficiency traits (residual feed intake (RFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR)), growth and body composition traits in the Romane meat sheep breed. In these traits, selection responses to single-generation divergent selection on RFI were evaluated. From 2009 to 2016, a total of 951 male lambs were tested for 8 weeks starting from 3 months of age. They were weighed at the beginning and at the end of the testing period. Backfat thickness and muscle depth were recorded at the end of the testing period through ultrasound measurements. Feed intake was continuously recorded over the testing period using the automatic concentrate feeders. The heritability of RFI was estimated at 0.45 ± 0.08, which was higher than the heritability of FCR (0.30 ± 0.08). No significant genetic correlations were observed between RFI and growth traits. A favourable low negative genetic correlation was estimated between RFI and muscle depth (−0.30 ± 0.15), though additional data are needed to confirm these results. The selection of low RFI sires based on their breeding values led to the production of lambs eating significantly less concentrate (3% decrease in the average daily feed intake), but with the same growth as lambs from sires selected based on high RFI breeding values. We concluded that in meat sheep, RFI is a heritable trait that is genetically independent of post-weaning growth and body composition traits. A one-generation divergent selection based on RFI breeding values highlighted that substantial gains in feeding costs can be expected in selection schemes for meat sheep breeds.  相似文献
