Records of sympatry between Alouatta caraya and A. clamitans are rare despite their extensive range overlap. An example of their current sympatry and the rediscovery of free-ranging potential hybrids of A. caraya and A. clamitans in the forests of the Upper Paraná River, Southern Brazil, are reported in this paper. Eight groups were observed in the study area: five monospecific groups of A. caraya, two of A. clamitans, and a group containing two adult males and two adult females of A. caraya and a sub-adult male and two adult females identified as Alouatta sp. The color of the last three individuals was a mosaic between the two species; this is consistent with previously described variations in museum specimens collected in the Paraná River in the 1940s that had been identified as potential hybrids. The results from this study emphasize the need for scientific studies in the region of the Ilha Grande National Park, one of the few regions in the Paraná River that currently harbors both howler species. The holdings of rust fungi on Grewia species (Tiliaceae) housed in the South African National Collection of Fungi (PREM) were examined. They belong to three morphologically similar, but clearly separable, species of Uredopeltis, and a species of Uredo. Each rust species has a distinct and restricted host range. Ravenelia atrides is a species of Uredopeltis and is transferred accordingly. Several specimens previously accessioned under R. atrides however belong to U. chevalieri. The specimens previously accessioned under Uredo grewiae belong to U. flava, and not U. chevalieri. Three specimens are best placed in Uredo corbiculoides. The Cantabrian capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus cantabricus) is an endangered subspecies of the Western capercaillie, endemic of northern Spain, inhabiting the south-western limit of the species range. Assessing genetic variability and the factors that determine it is crucial in order to develop an effective conservation strategy. In this work, non-invasive samples were collected in some of the best preserved areas inhabited by Cantabrian capercaillie. Nine microsatellite loci and a sex-specific marker were analysed. We included five zones, separated by valleys with different levels of habitat modifications. No evidence of genetic clustering was found which suggests that fragmentation and development in the area do not act as barriers to gene flow. Nonetheless, significant differences among sampling zones were encountered in terms of their allelic frequencies (global F ST = 0.035, p = 0.001). Pairwise F ST comparisons showed differences between all sampling zones included, except between the two ones located in the South (Degaña and Alto Sil). These findings, along with the results of individual based genetic differences, indicate that gene flow among sampling zones might be at least slightly compromised, except between the two zones located in the South. Despite this, the sampling zones seem to exchange migrants at a rate that prevents genetic differentiation to the point of creating clusters. Our results show that the capercaillies in the study area constitute a single interbreeding group, which is an important piece of information that provides support to better understand the dynamics of this endangered subspecies.  相似文献

Mixed species groups and hybridization are common among primates, yet these phenomena are rare and poorly understood for the genus Alouatta. In this study, we describe the composition of howler groups in a sympatric area of Alouatta caraya and Alouatta clamitans and provide new evidence for the occurrence of interspecific hybridization. Between October 2006 and April 2007, 11 howler groups were located in a 150-ha forest fragment: two monospecific groups of A. caraya, two monospecific groups of A. clamitans, two groups composed of A. clamitans and hybrid morphotypes (A. caraya × A. clamitans), and five groups composed of both species together with hybrid morphotypes (mixed species groups). The average size of the studied groups was 5.2 ± 1.2 individuals. Monospecific and mixed groups (mixed species groups + groups with hybrids) did not differ significantly in their sizes. In total, the sex/age ratios were 1 AM:1.5 AF:0.2 SAM:0.5 JUV:0.2 INF and the species ratios were 1 A. caraya:1.6 A. clamitans:0.4 A. caraya × A. clamitans. The ratio of immatures to 1AF was larger in the monospecific groups (0.75 immatures:1AF) than in mixed groups (0.29 immatures:1AF), possibly reflecting a lower viability in the latter. Two features of the hybrid morphotypes of the upper Paraná River support their status as true hybrids: the polymorphism of their coloration patterns and the extremely female-biased sex ratio. The effects of Haldane’s rule and population fragmentation on the interactions between both species are discussed. Two fungi collected from submerged woody debris were found to represent hitherto undescribed species of the ascomycete genera Clohiesia and Paraniesslia. They are described as Clohiesia curvispora sp. nov. and Paraniesslia aquatica sp. nov. based on morphological characters. Clohiesia curvispora is characterized by immersed ascomata under a clypeus, and unitunicate, cylindrical asci containing one-celled, curved, elongate-fusiform ascospores. Paraniesslia aquatica is characterized by small, superficial, setose ascomata, and unitunicate, clavate asci containing verrucose, brown ascospores. Each species is illustrated with light micrographs and compared with similar taxa in this article.  相似文献

This report deals with micropropagation of the critically endangered and endemic Turkish shrub, Thermopsis turcica using callus, root and cotyledonary explants. Callus cultures were initiated from root and cotyledon explants on MS medium supplemented with 0.5–20 μM NAA or 2,4-D. The root explants were found to be better in terms of quick responding and callusing percentages as compared to the cotyledons. Organogenic callus production with adventitious roots and shoots were obtained on MS medium with only NAA. The calli obtained with NAA, root and cotyledonary explants were cultured with BA and kinetin (2–8 μM) alone or in combination with a low level (0.5 μM) of 2,4-D or NAA. The best regeneration of shoots from root explants was observed on hormone-free MS medium. NAA with BA or kinetin in the medium improved shoot induction from the calli obtained with NAA. Maximum percentage of shoots (93.3%), maximum number of shoots (6.2) and maximun length of shoots (8.22 cm) were achieved from cotyledonary explants at 4 μM BA and 0.5 μM NAA. The presence of 0.5 μM or higher levels of 2,4-D in shoot induction medium inhibited the regeneration in T. turcica explants. 83% of in vitro rooting was attained on pulsed-IBA treated shoots. The regenerated plants with well developed shoots and roots were successfully acclimatized. Application of this study’s results has the potential to conserve T. turcica from extinction.  相似文献

Cortinarius breviradicatus sp. nov., found in deciduous forests, is described and illustrated from Niigata, Japan. It is characterized by its medium-sized to large dark brown basidiocarp, acutely conical pileus, and rooting stipe, and by subglobose to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores. In addition, the extracting solution from its basidiocarps exhibits a strong fluorescence around 400–430 nm in ultraviolet radiation (250 nm), which was observed in a species of Cortinarius sect. Orellani. The new species belongs to the section Orellani. The differences between the new taxon and similar species are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes.  相似文献

We studied microsatellite genetic variation in 14 different geographic populations of black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) across the European range. Populations were grouped in three different fragmentation categories: isolated, contiguous and continuous, respectively. Genetic diversity, measured as observed heterozygosity (H O), expected heterozygosity (H E) and allelic richness, were lower in isolated populations as compared to the other two categories that did not differ amongst one another. These results imply that lowered genetic variability in black grouse populations is negatively affected by population isolation. Our results suggest that the connectivity of small and isolated populations in Western Europe should be improved or else these face an increased risk of extinction due to genetic and demographic stochasticity.  相似文献

We studied the population genetics of two antimicrobial peptide (AMP) loci, called Mytilin B and Mytilus galloprovincialis defensin 2 (MGD2), in the secondary contact mosaic hybrid zone between Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis. The isolation period between the two species was estimated to be ~1 million years (range, 0.5 million to 2 million years) long. During this period, coevolution between microbes and the immune system has likely occurred. The secondary contact, which would date back to ~25,000 (0–200,000) years, recently allowed these coadaptations to be rearranged through hybridization. Distinctive polymorphisms were uncovered in coding sequences of the two AMP loci such as insertion/deletion of codons or bisubstituted codons. Very low levels of differentiation were observed between populations of the two species at both loci, while other nuclear loci often showed marked structure among the same samples. The absence of population differentiation proved to be the consequence of secondary introgression of highly divergent alleles. While only a few recombinants were observed at the Mytilin B locus, the MGD2 locus showed a high intragenic recombination rate, which increased in the exon coding for the mature peptide. In addition, standard neutrality tests revealed significant deviations from the mutation-drift equilibrium at both loci. These results suggest that either balancing or directional selection is likely to play a role in the evolution of the two AMPs and introgression would be adaptive. However, evidence accumulated at the Mytilin B locus allows neither for identification of the direction of selection nor for any conclusions on whether selection acted directly on the antimicrobial peptide itself. At the MGD2 locus, a spatial variation of polymorphism patterns along the sequence suggests that selection was direct, although the precise nature of the selection (directional vs. balancing) remains unclear. This study concurs with previous reports of an effect of slight selection on AMP genes evolution in other invertebrates, although selection does not necessarily act on the mature peptides. E. Boon and M. F. Faure contributed equally to this work.  相似文献

Typhula maritima on coastal dunes in Ishikari and Yoichi, Hokkaido, northern Japan, is illustrated as a new species on the basis of morphology and molecular evidence. The sclerotia in the sand had mycelial strands that extended upward to support basidiocarps. Mycelial strands also connected sclerotia with plant tissues of the dunegrass Eylmus mollis Trin. Typhula maritima is psychrotrophic and halotrophic, and sclerotia floated on seawater for 1 week. These physiological characteristics are important factors for adaptation to the coastal dune environment. Inoculation tests indicated that T. maritima could grow on living E. mollis, but it was not pathogenic. The results suggested that this fungus was, at least, not an active pathogen in the coastal dune ecosystem. Ex-holotype is TH-AIST-Tm-1 (= NBRC 104266).  相似文献

A pea rust fungus, Uromyces viciae-fabae, has been classified into two varieties, var. viciae-fabae and var. orobi, based on differences in urediniospore wall thickness and putative host specificity in Japan. In principal component analyses, morphological features of urediniospores and teliospores of 94 rust specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum did not show definite host-specific morphological groups. In molecular analyses, 23 Uromyces specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum formed a single genetic clade based on D1/D2 and ITS regions. Four isolates of U. viciae-fabae from V. cracca and V. unijuga could infect and sporulate on P. sativum. These results suggest that U. viciae-fabae populations on different host plants are not biologically differentiated into groups that can be recognized as varieties.Contribution no. 184, Laboratory of Plant Parasitic Mycology, Institute of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Tsukuba, Japan  相似文献

Pasteurellosis, or pseudotuberculosis, is a bacterial septicaemia caused by the halophilic bacterium Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (formerly Pasteurella piscicida). Although this disease was first described in wild populations of white perch and striped bass, currently the natural hosts of the pathogen are a wide variety of marine fish. The disease has great economic impact both in Japan, where it affects mainly yellowtail cultures, and in the Mediterranean area, due to the losses it causes in seabream and seabass farms. This microorganism serves as a perfect model to study a bacterial fish pathogen, either at an applied level, to resolve or to mitigate the high economic losses of fish farmers, or at a basic level, for a better understanding of P. damselae subsp. piscicida biology. This article discusses the methods employed in our laboratory to study the causative agent of pasteurellosis. It reviews important aspects, from the diverse procedures for the detection and isolation of the pathogen to the latest molecular studies that have allowed its correct taxonomic allocation. Characterization of some virulence mechanisms and the available methods to prevent the disease are also presented. Electronic Publication  相似文献

A rust species on Calystegia soldanella in Japan has been treated as Puccinia convolvuli to date. However, morphological characteristics of specimens on C. soldanella collected from Japan are significantly different from those of specimens on other Calystegia and Convolvulus species from different areas of the world. It is proved by inoculation experiment that the rust on C. soldanella is specific to C. soldanella. Based on these results, Puccinia rust on C. soldanella from Japan is described as a new species, Puccinia calystegiae-soldanellae.  相似文献

The chromosomes of eight species of Rutilus and Scardinius, mostly endemic to the Italian and the Balkan peninsula, were analyzed by conventional and other banding techniques. Parallel analyses were conducted also on two leuciscine species, Alburnus albidus, for which we provide the first karyological analysis, and Leuciscus cephalus. All species examined displayed the same karyotype (2n=50 chromosomes, 8 metacentric+13 submetacentric+4 subtelo/acrocentric pairs) with nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) on the ends of the shorter arms of a medium-sized submetacentric pair. In contrast, interspecific variation was observed in the distribution of constitutive heterochromatin. The variation observed in this genomic material proved to be systematically and phylogenetically informative. Indeed, a peritelomeric C-band on the first telocentric pair characterizes species of Rutilus and Scardinius. In both genera heterochromatin differentiation appears to be directed to a centromere–telomere direction, particularly evident along the metacentric elements of their karyotypes. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献
