As a species traditionally managed extensively, at least for some of the year, sheep have received relatively little attention from a welfare perspective. Although extensively managed animals have greater behavioural freedom than those managed intensively, they are still vulnerable to other welfare challenges. Welfare can be considered from the perspective of the animals biological functioning, the naturalness of the way in which they are kept, or their feelings (negative or positive). These different domains can be integrated by considering the animal (and the adaptations it possesses) and the environment (made up of the challenges the animal experiences). In this schema, the extensively managed animal may experience poor welfare if the environmental challenges overwhelm its evolved coping strategies (for example, in high temperatures if behavioural and physiological adaptations cannot dissipate heat sufficiently) or if it has adaptations (such as behavioural anti-predator responses) that are no longer required. To assess welfare of sheep, therefore, we need to know when the animal may begin to suffer if its adaptations do not meet the challenges presented by the environment or when the cost of meeting those challenges is too great. In addition, the adaptations the sheep possess will affect how well it copes, e.g. breed differences in maternal behaviour and responses to predators will influence lamb survival and predation risk in extensive environments, respectively. How well the extensive environment can meet the behavioural needs of sheep has never been tested. However, consideration of the behaviour and habitat of wild sheep suggests that some preferred environmental features, such as escape terrain or specific birth sites, may not be present in farmed environments. How this affects sheep welfare is still to be determined. Sheep welfare is also affected by the quality of the stockperson caring for them. Interactions with people for extensively managed sheep are infrequent, but nearly always aversive, and whether the nature of interactions can be affected by stockperson attitude and behaviour, as seen in intensively managed species, remains to be seen. There is evidence, however, that farmers may under-estimate the negative impact that themselves and their sheepdogs can have on their sheep. Farmer attitude can also affect management decisions which may have an indirect impact on the welfare of their sheep. For example, farmer attitudes towards lameness are related to treatment decisions. The extensive environment thus provides particular challenges to welfare that differ markedly from those in intensive systems, and still need further investigation.  相似文献

The high pre-weaning mortality in farm animal species and poor welfare conditions of reproductive females question modern industrial farming acceptability. A growing body of literature has been produced recently, investigating the impact of maternal stress during gestation on maternal and offspring physiology and behavior in farm animals. Until now, the possible impact of prenatal stress on neonatal health, growth and survival could not be consistently demonstrated, probably because experimental studies use small numbers of animals and thus do not allow accurate estimations. However, the data from literature synthesized in the present review show that in ungulates, maternal stress can sometimes alter important maternal parameters of neonatal survival such as colostrum production (ruminants) and maternal care to the newborn (pigs). Furthermore, maternal stress during gestation can affect maternal immune system and impair her health, which can have an impact on the transfer of pathogens from the mother to her fetus or neonate. Finally, prenatal stress can decrease the ability of the neonate to absorb colostral immunoglobulins, and alter its inflammatory response and lymphocyte functions during the first few weeks of life. Cortisol and reproductive hormones in the case of colostrogenesis are pointed out as possible hormonal mediators. Field data and epidemiological studies are needed to quantify the role of maternal welfare problems in neonatal health and survival.  相似文献

Segregated early weaning (SEW), introduced with the objectives of eradicating or controlling diseases and improving performance, is becoming increasingly popular among producers. The main features of SEW are weaning piglets early and moving the newly weaned piglets to a site isolated from the sows and other animals. In this article, we describe the key features of SEW and factors leading to its development. We review some of the main welfare issues involved with raising pigs in this way. We describe experiments that were crucial in the development of SEW and that showed positive effects on the health status and weight gain of piglets. We also review experiments that indicated welfare problems associated with this system. Specifically, we look at the effects of early weaning on the behavior and well-being of piglets. In addition, we look at other features of SEW, such as repeated cross-fostering and transport of young piglets. We provide directions for future research and offer recommendations for producers.  相似文献

Transport of farm animals gives rise to concern about their welfare. Specific attention has been given to the duration of animal transport, and maximum journey durations are used in legislation that seek to minimise any negative impact of transport on animal welfare. This paper reviews the relatively few scientific investigations into effects of transport duration on animal welfare in cattle, sheep, horses, pigs and poultry. From the available literature, we attempt to distinguish between aspects, which will impair welfare on journeys of any duration, such as those associated with loading, and those aspects that may be exacerbated by journey time. We identify four aspects of animal transport, which have increasing impact on welfare as transport duration increases. These relate to (i) the physiological and clinical state of the animal before transport; and - during transport - to (ii) feeding and watering; (iii) rest and (iv) thermal environment. It is thus not journey duration per se but these associated negative aspects that are the cause of compromised welfare. We suggest that with a few exceptions, transport of long duration is possible in terms of animal welfare provided that these four issues can be dealt with for the species and the age group of the animals that are transported.  相似文献

Pancreatic duodenal homeobox 1 (PDX1) is a crucial gene for pancreas development during the fetal period. PDX1‐modified pigs have the potential to be used as a model of diabetes mellitus. However, the severe health problems caused by the PDX1 mutation limit phenotypic studies of PDX1‐modified pigs as diabetes models. In this study, we generated PDX1‐modified pigs by the CRISPR/Cas9 system introduced into zygotes via electroporation and investigated the mosaicism, phenotypes, and inheritance of the resulting pigs. After the embryo transfer of PDX1‐modified zygotes, nine mutant piglets were delivered. Two piglets were apancreatic biallelic mutants. For the other seven piglets, the ratio of mutant alleles to total alleles was 17.5–79.7%. Two mutant piglets with high mutation rates (67.7% and 79.7%) exhibited hypoplasia of the pancreas, whereas the other five piglets were healthy. One of the male mutant piglets was further analyzed. The ejaculated semen from the pig contained PDX1‐mutant spermatozoa and the pig showed normal reproductive ability. In conclusion, the frequency of the PDX1 mutation is presumed to relate to pancreas formation, and PDX1 mutant founder pigs generated from zygotes introduced to the CRISPR/Cas9 system can serve as providers of nonmosaics to contribute to medical research on diabetes mellitus.  相似文献

Bedding, environmental enrichment materials and disinfectant powders in pig farming are meant to ensure a hygienic bedding environment or allow pigs to perform explorative behaviour. To our knowledge, no legal regulation exists, that established maximum contents for undesirable substances, such as toxic metals, dioxins or trace elements in these materials, although oral ingestion could be expected. In the present study, a total of 74 materials (disinfectant powders [n = 51], earth/peat [n = 12], biochar [n = 8], recycled manure solids [n = 3]) were analysed for their content of various toxic metals, trace elements, dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls. The data suggest that, in some samples, trace elements like iron, copper and zinc might have been added intentionally in order to induce physiological effects (iron supply to piglets, copper and zinc as growth promoter in pigs). Moreover, some materials contained high levels of lead, cadmium or arsenic. Consequently, if farm animals repeatedly consume environmental enrichment and bedding materials or disinfectant powders in considerable amounts and these quantities are added to the daily ration, the amount of ingested undesirable substances and trace elements might exceed the maximum levels set for complete feedstuffs, and an elevated transfer into food of animal origin might occur. Future studies are required to address the possible quantitative contribution in the light of feed and food safety. Finally, the excretion of undesirable substances with manure needs to be considered due to their possible accumulation in soils.  相似文献

For establishment of gonadal xenografting, it is essential to clarify whether offspring derived from gametes grown in host mice harboring xenografts have normal reproductive development. This study examined the secretory profiles of gonadal hormones in relation to sexual maturation or ovarian cyclicity in pigs generated by intracytoplasmic sperm injection using xenogeneic sperm (Xeno-ICSI pigs, four males and one female). We also assessed the developmental activity of gametes obtained from these pigs using in vitro culture systems, or by mating with conventionally produced (conventional) pigs. During the growth of male Xeno-ICSI pigs, serum inhibin and testosterone concentrations were generally within ranges for those hormones in conventional pigs. Histologically, there were no differences in the growth and differentiation of seminiferous tubules between Xeno-ICSI and conventional pigs. Parameters of semen quality, including volume, pH, sperm concentration, and the percentage of motile sperm were not different from those in conventional pigs. Among the Xeno-ICSI pigs, individual differences were noted in the ability of sperm to penetrate oocytes and to produce blastocysts. However, oocytes after in vitro fertilization using these sperm developed into blastocysts containing more than 31 cells. One conventional sow delivered 12 piglets after being mated with a male Xeno-ICSI pig. During growth of the female Xeno-ICSI pig, serum progesterone concentrations had a sudden increase at 41 wk of age, suggesting CL formation. After puberty, this animal showed cyclic changes in the serum concentrations of progesterone and inhibin, and delivered 10 piglets after AI using fresh sperm obtained from a conventional boar. In conclusion, these findings demonstrated that both male and female Xeno-ICSI pigs had normal reproductive abilities.  相似文献

The maternal behaviour of four gilts and one sow having her second litter was studied in two enclosures, measuring 7 and 13 ha. The females left the flocks approximately 24 h before farrowing and moved between 2.5 and 6.5 km during a period of continuous wandering lasting 4–6 h. During this wandering, the pigs seemed to examine and discriminate between different possible farrowing sites. When a site had been chosen, the pigs constructed nests resembling those reported for the European wild boar. After farrowing, the mother and litter remained in or close to the nest for about 9 days. Thereafter, the nests were suddenly abandoned and the piglets changed from hiders to followers. The female and the young joined the flock, but the litter tended to remain an intact social unit throughout lactation and mixed with other piglets only occassionally during resting. No cross-suckling was observed, although some attempts to steal milk from alien mothers were recorded. The piglets were weaned at between 14 and 17 weeks of age. The maternal behaviour was similar to that reported for wild boars and feral pigs. There were individual differences in maternal behaviour among the animals studied, which may be interpreted either as genetically fixed inter-individual differences or as variable strategies, adopted to increase the lifetime reproductive success.  相似文献

Nuclear receptor signalling is essential for physiological processes such as metabolism, development, and reproduction. Alterations in the endocrine state that naturally occur during pregnancy result in maternal adaptations to support the feto-placental unit. A series of studies have shown that nuclear receptor signalling is involved in maternal adaptations of bile acid, cholesterol, and lipid homeostasis pathways to ensure maintenance of the nutritional demands of the fetus. We discuss regulation of hepatic nuclear receptors and their target genes in pregnancy and their impact on the development of disorders such as intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and oestrogen-induced hepatotoxicity. Peri-partum posture and behaviour of gilts from lines selected for different components of efficient lean growth were studied to determine if behavioural changes may have been associated with the observed responses in reproductive performance. The proportions of time that gilts expressed defined posture and behaviour traits and the locations of their piglets were determined from video recordings of observations made at 5min intervals in the period extending from 2h pre-farrowing to 2h post-farrowing. The 137 gilts studied were from four pairs of Large White lines which had been divergently (high and low) selected for either daily food intake (DFI), lean food conversion efficiency (LFC), lean growth rate on ad libitum feeding (LGA) or lean growth rate on a restricted feeding scale (LGS).Almost all the significant (P<05) changes occurred in the LGS pair of lines. In the pre-farrowing period, relative to the low LGS gilts, high LGS gilts spent a higher proportion of their time lying on their sides (0.92 versus 0.69), and less time in the upright postures of standing, sitting or lying on their bellies (0.08 versus 0.33) and engaging in nesting behaviour (0.02 versus 0.10). During farrowing, high LGS gilts again lay on their sides more often than low LGS gilts (0.96 versus 0.80) and were upright less often (0.04 versus 0.20). High LGS gilts changed posture less often than low LGS gilts (0.05 versus 0.31) but were more often alert (0.79 versus 0.61). During farrowing, high LGS piglets were seen less often at their mother's head, back and vulva or at the creep than low LGS piglets (0.06 versus 0.15). Post-farrowing, there were no significant differences between the lines, almost all gilts lying on their sides with their piglets at the udder. Divergent selection for components of efficient lean growth rate on ad libitum feeding was not associated with consistent responses in gilt posture and behaviour or in piglet location. Selection for high lean growth on restricted feeding had effects on gilt posture and behaviour which may have been beneficial to her welfare and that of her piglets.  相似文献

Estrogen synthesis evolved in chordates to control reproduction. The terminal enzyme in the cascade directly responsible for estrogen synthesis is aromatase cytochrome P450 (P450arom) encoded by the CYP19 gene. Mammals typically have a single CYP19 gene but pigs, peccaries and other Suiformes have two or more resulting from duplication in a common ancestor. Duplication of CYP genes in the steroid synthetic cascade has occurred for only one other enzyme, also terminal, 11beta-hydroxylase P450 (P450c11). P450arom and P450c11 share common substrates and even physiological functions as possible remnants from a common P450 progenitor, perhaps an ancestral P450arom, which is supported by phylogenetic analysis. Conserved tissue-specific expression patterns of P450arom paralogs in placenta and gonads of pigs and peccaries suggest how functional adaptation may have proceeded divergently and influenced adopted reproductive strategies including ovulation rate and litter size. Data suggest that the porcine placental paralog evolved catalytically to protect female conceptuses from testosterone produced by male siblings; the gonadal paralog to synthesize a novel, nonaromatizable testosterone metabolite (1OH-testosterone) that may increase ovulation rate. This would represent a coevolution facilitating litter bearing as pigs diverged from peccaries. Evidence of convergence between the peccary CYP19 genes and lower tissue expression may therefore represent initiation of loss of the functional paralogs. Studies on the Suiforme aromatases provide insights into the evolution of the steroidogenic cascade and metabolic pathways in general, how it translates into physiological adaptations (altered reproductive strategies for instance), and how duplicated genes become stabilized or disappear from genomes.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tract of pigs is densely populated with microorganisms that closely interact with the host and with ingested feed. Gut microbiota benefits the host by providing nutrients from dietary substrates and modulating the development and function of the digestive and immune systems. An optimized gastrointestinal microbiome is crucial for pigs’ health, and establishment of the microbiome in piglets is especially important for growth and disease resistance. However, the microbiome in the gastrointestinal tract of piglets is immature and easily influenced by the environment. Supplementing the microbiome of piglets with probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus could help create an optimized microbiome by improving the abundance and number of lactobacilli and other indigenous probiotic bacteria. Dominant indigenous probiotic bacteria could improve piglets’ growth and immunity through certain cascade signal transduction pathways. The piglet body provides a permissive habitat and nutrients for bacterial colonization and growth. In return, probiotic bacteria produce prebiotics such as short-chain fatty acids and bacteriocins that benefit piglets by enhancing their growth and reducing their risk of enteric infection by pathogens. A comprehensive understanding of the interactions between piglets and members of their gut microbiota will help develop new dietary interventions that can enhance piglets’ growth, protect piglets from enteric diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria, and maximize host feed utilization.  相似文献

Ovarian follicular atresia is regulated by androgens directly via androgen receptors and indirectly after conversion to estrogens. The balance between proliferation and cell apoptosis is crucial for the physiological functioning of the follicles. The disorder between these processes leads to reproductive failure, such as cyst formation. Recent research suggests maternally or neonatally mediated effects of antiandrogen flutamide on reproductive functions during adulthood. Therefore, the current study was performed to determine whether late gestational or neonatal exposure to flutamide influences proliferation and apoptosis rates in large antral follicles of adult porcine ovary. These periods are critical in ovarian biology and may determine female fertility in adulthood. Flutamide was injected into pregnant gilts between days 80 and 88 of gestation, and into female piglets between days 2 and 10 postnatally. The ovaries were collected from treated and control adult pigs, and healthy large antral follicles were excised. In large antral follicles, granulosa and theca cells revealed elevated (p<0.001) proliferation index measured by immunolocalization of Ki-67 following maternal and neonatal flutamide exposure. The percentage of apoptotic granulosa cells detected using TUNEL assay significantly decreased (p<0.01) after flutamide administration, that paralleled with down-regulation (p<0.01) of caspase-3 protein expression. Moreover, plasma testosterone decreased (p<0.001) in flutamide-treated animals, whereas 17β-estradiol was elevated following flutamide exposure. The present research indicates increased proliferation and diminished apoptosis rates within large antral follicles of adult pigs following prenatal and neonatal flutamide administration, which might influence the normal development of the follicles and pigs fertility as a consequence.  相似文献

The nature of the relationship between humans and farm animals has multiple repercussions on the animals and the farmers and varies with farmers attitudes towards their animals. In particular, this relationship influences animal welfare and human working conditions. The present study, part of a larger research project investigating human–animal relationship (HAR) in pig farming and ways to improve it, had two objectives: 1) to investigate the HAR in a diversity of pig farming situations and to evaluate the possible correlation between farmer attitudes, pigs' reactions to humans, husbandry practices, animal health, welfare and productivity and 2) to find a way to rapidly assign a farmer to a profile, in order to better adapt course content during training sessions on HAR. The study focused on 52 farrow-to-finish farms and consisted of a semi-structured interview with the farmer, observations of the farmer in contact with his/her livestock, two human approach tests conducted on sows and growers and productivity data. Finally, a questionnaire was left at the farm to be filled out by all stockpersons on the farm. Interviews, analyzed using a thematic analysis followed by multiple correspondence analysis and ascendant hierarchical clustering, showed that some farmers develop husbandry practices to improve their HARs and identified three farmer profiles that have been named in relation to the place of the HAR in their profession: Profile 1 farmers for whom HAR is secondary in their work with their pigs, Profile 2 for whom the HAR is useful in their work with their pigs and Profile 3 for whom HAR is central in their work with their pigs. Logistic regression models of the relationships between behavioral tests and productivity data showed that confident sows produce and wean more piglets than fearful sows and that sows of Profile 3 farmers trust more humans than those of Profile 1 or 2 farmers. Farmers' responses to the questionnaire did not predict their profile assignment. Our results confirm the main role of the farmer's attitude towards animals on their farming practices, animal welfare and productivity. The farmers who have more confident pigs and better productivity are those for whom the farm animal is central to their profession, express the most pleasure in working with them and convey empathy for them.  相似文献

This review provides an assessment of research findings into the current practices and standards and the principles and aspirations for organic dairy production, with respect to the health and welfare of the dairy cow. The relationships between the four main factors: management, environment, genetics and nutrition and their impact on the health and welfare status of organic dairy cows are considered. The concept that good animal health and welfare is more than merely the absence of disease, with behavioural aspects of health and welfare such as physiological and psychological needs, is also discussed. These factors are inter-related and important in all dairy systems, irrespective of whether the system is organic, low-input or intensive. Incidences of individual clinical and sub-clinical diseases that are recorded in conventional dairy systems also occur in organic dairy systems, with infertility, lameness and mastitis being the major problems. However, the magnitude of the incidence of many of these diseases may be either lower or higher in organic systems due to different management practices and the standards defined for organic milk production that, for example, prohibit the routine use of conventional medicines and require the feeding of high-forage diets. In relation to different systems, it is important to note that contrary to a common assumption, good welfare does not necessarily occur with more extensive systems. The type of organic system (self-sufficient, purchased-feed) also has the potential to have a major influence on the incidence of health problems and the reproductive status of organic dairy herds. Health status is also influenced by environmental and welfare factors, including the method of rearing replacement animals, type of housing and the geographical and climatic conditions of individual farms. Overall, this review identifies where conflicts arise between current practice and the organic principles and standards, and aims to provide suggestions to bring about further improvement in organic dairy health and welfare.  相似文献

BIOCHEMICAL ADAPTATION AND LOSS OF GENETIC CAPACITY IN HELMINTH PARASITES   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. Adaptation and loss of genetic capacity differ chiefly in that adaptation is goal- directed whereas loss of genetic capacity is not. Given sufficient information about an individual organism and its environment, adaptations are recognizable without reference to historical events extending beyond a single generation. This is not true of loss of genetic capacity, which requires a preliminary judgement that genetic information now absent was present in ancestral organisms. Together, adaptation and loss of genetic capacity are the major contributors to overall reproductive fitness. Accidental selection is genetically associated with adaptation, but is not goal-directed. 2. Adaptations arevariant or invariant; invariant adaptations comprising biochemical unity, and variant adaptations contributing to biochemical diversity. Variant adaptations may be either exploitive or epigenetic. Exploitive adaptations are a measure of thegenetic capacity for phenotypic response to an altered environment, which the individual may not in fact encounter. Epigenetic adaptations are more rigidly programmed and are responsive to altered environments only insofar as these are a constant feature of the life cycle. 3. Selected observations in the biochemistry of helminth parasites are examined with respect to their interpretation in terms of adaptation, loss of genetic capacity and accidental selection. Secure judgements concerning adaptation are often possible at the most general level, i.e. when the physicochemical properties of the environment, such as temperature or oxygen supply, are clearly defined. I t is more difficult to make judgements concerning the specific mechanisms used in achieving these goals. Conclusions concerning loss of genetic capacity require knowledge of the specific function through-out the life cycle. In many cases loss of genetic capacity is only apparent, as the function appears in another part of the life cycle. Such apparent losses are in reality epigenetic adaptations. These concepts are helpful in interpreting past work and in devising new experiments. 4. Development in helminth parasites includes a pronounced capacity for the orderly release of information to be used in the next stage. As each stage may require a radically different environment, programming for it may lead to phenomena which are superficially puzzling, such as the existence of aerobic electron transport systems in a stage whose energy metabolism is fermentative. The concept of epigenetic adaptation is especially useful for interpreting such observations. 5. Although possible adaptations are most readily apparent in biochemically complex mechanisms, these mechanisms are an expression of the orderly effects of many different primary gene products which have not been much studied. There are indications that organisms possessing relatively complex life cycles may provide opportunities for relating primary gene products, such as isozymes, to their physiological functions.  相似文献

Xenografting of immature testicular tissue combined with cryopreservation can preserve and use genetic information of prepubertal animals. For establishment of this new approach, it is essential to clarify whether offspring derived from sperm grown in host mice harboring cryopreserved xenografts show normal reproductive development. This study examined serum profiles of gonadal hormones during sexual maturation in pigs generated by intracytoplasmic sperm injection using sperm derived from cryopreserved xenografts (CryoXeno pigs; three males and three females). We also assessed the reproductive abilities of the male CryoXeno pigs by mating them with conventionally produced (conventional) pigs, and by examining the in vitro fertilizing ability of their sperm. For female CryoXeno pigs, reproductive ability was evaluated by artificial insemination with semen from a conventional boar. During the growth of male CryoXeno pigs, the serum concentrations of inhibin and testosterone showed similar changes (P > 0.17) to those in conventional pigs (n = 4). Histologic analyses of the testes revealed no differences (P > 0.2) in the growth and differentiation of seminiferous tubules between CryoXeno and conventional pigs. Three conventional sows delivered 13.0 ± 1.0 (mean ± standard error of the mean) live piglets after being mated with the three CryoXeno males. Sperm obtained from all CryoXeno pigs had the ability to penetrate oocytes, and these fertilized oocytes reached the blastocyst stage in vitro. During the growth of female CryoXeno pigs, the serum inhibin profile was similar (P > 0.17) to that observed in conventional pigs (n = 5). The first rise in serum progesterone concentration to more than 2 ng/mL was noted at 32.0 ± 2.3 weeks of age in the CryoXeno pigs and at 32.0 ± 3.3 weeks in the conventional pigs, suggesting that both pigs reached puberty at a similar age. After puberty, female CryoXeno pigs farrowed 8.3 ± 1.7 (mean ± standard error of the mean; n = 3) live piglets after artificial insemination with semen from a conventional boar. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate that both male and female CryoXeno pigs have normal reproductive abilities.  相似文献

Genetic and physiological functional relationships between major reproductive parameters were studied in domestic prolific mammals with special reference to selection-induced changes in fertility and mothering ability in ten generations of pigs of sino-European Tiameslan composite line, which was first bred in France. Based on our hypothesis, balance equations were derived describing highly adaptive functional coadaptations of reproductive traits. Properties of these equations were examined with regard to natural selection. Selection changes of secretory traits of mammary glands were shown to play a leading role in a correlated increase of biological fertility. Genetically controlled regulatory relationships maintained by natural stabilizing selection were established between fertility, sow milk production, perinatal survival, and survival to weaning. Thus, a system of simple complementary equations characterizing an independent integrative reproductive physiological mother-young(s) system was obtained, which had not been previously published. CEPHALOPODS AND FISH: THE LIMITS OF CONVERGENCE   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Resemblances between cephalopods and fish 1. Modern cephalopods (coleoids < 1000 species) resemble modern fish (30,000 species) more closely than any of their ancestors did. They have not been replaced by the more diversified group in geological time. 2. The main body of the article (pp. 245–283) reviews these resemblances. They are to be found at all levels of analysis. 3. Basic physiological mechanisms of molluscs (pp. 262–5) have been incorporated into systems with performances comparable to those of vertebrate systems. For instance the cephalopod locomotory system (pp. 249–56) and hydrostatic control system (pp. 256–60), structurally very different from their fish counterparts, have similar adaptive radiation. 4. Behaviour (p. 278) and growth of the brain (p. 265) are characteristically vertebrate-like. 5. Cephalopods and fish are considered as occupying the same broad adaptive zone though modal differences (pp. 283–5)-in reproductive habits, growth rate and light-dependent behaviour where extraocular photoreceptors appear to be important - mean that they occupy different areas within that zone. (ii) Evolution of convergence 6. Evidence is presented (pp. 287–293) for considering the convergence as due not merely to similar physical demands of the marine environment, but to dynamic interactions between cephalopods and vertebrates from the late Palaeozoic onwards. 7. The convergence was set on its way when the two groups, independently of each other, acquired locomotory methods that allowed them to increase in size. 8. It is argued that reduction and eventually complete loss of the chambered shell (in all but sepiids) was an evolutionary response to the needs of increased mobility and to the need to go deeper as vertebrate predators pushed out into oceanic waters. 9. The ammonites (pp. 291–2) present a partial model of the course that coleoid ancestors may have taken. 10. Coleoids subsequently reinvaded surface and coastal waters, competing successfully in a teleost habitat. Their most striking adaptations are ones that they share with teleosts. 11. Behavioural interactions in a vertebrate-dominated environment have probably been responsible for the vertebrate-type eye of cephalopods (p. 293). 12. The conclusion that the common adaptive zone shared by cephalopods and fish has been achieved by mutual interactions between the two groups evokes no special evolutionary principles. It assumes that all cephalopod species have (at some period of their evolutionary history) been in competition for food with some vertebrate species and that vertebrates are a source of selection pressures - largely operating through visual behaviour - that maintain and promote convergence upon the ‘fish’ modal type. 13. Selection pressures also operate within behaviour space to maintain and promote the special differences that separate any competitively successful species from all others. Coleoids as a group appear to have retained adaptations associated with such molluscan features as high growth rate and rapid turnover of the population. They are still characteristically crepuscular in habits and have extensive vertical mobility.  相似文献

Despite technological changes and improved management, piglet mortality remains a problem for both production and welfare. Most preweaning mortality occurs within the first 3 days after birth because of problems with adaptation and development. Thus, the purpose of our study was to determine the physiologic state of newborn pigs with respect to piglet survival. Data were collected from 1024 live-born piglets of 106 primiparous German Landrace sows to analyze relationships between farrowing traits, early postnatal vitality and blood chemistry, including immunity of piglets at birth. Surviving piglets were compared with those that died during the first 10 days of life. The survivors were significantly heavier at birth (P=0.001), were born earlier in the birth order (P=0.04), reached the udder and took in first colostral milk more quickly (P=0.001) and had a smaller drop in rectal temperature I h after birth (P=0.001) than dead. However, dead piglets had significantly higher blood levels of inorganic phosphorus (P=0.0001), calcium (P=0.04) and urea (P=0.05), but a lower concentration of alpha2-macroglobulin and lower lymphocyte proliferation indices in response to pokeweed mitogen (P=0.05). Models fitted for discrimination between survivors and piglets that died included, in addition to birth weight and litter size, the foraging behavior of neonates (time from birth to first suckle) and their thermoregulatory capacity (rectal temperature 1 h after birth) in the first experimental unit, as well as prenursing biochemical measures (inorganic phosphorus, calcium and glucose) in the second experimental unit. These ethophysiological and biochemical traits of early postnatal vitality are important determinants of maturity and development at birth. Hence, breeding programs and perinatal housing and feeding conditions should ensure a high physiological maturity to improve mortality rates of neonates.  相似文献
