In 2002, periphyton samples were collected 14 times from six stations within a floating vegetation mat in Lake Lunzer Obersee, a small mountain lake in Austria. Water temperature, conductivity, pH, alkalinity, Ca2+- and total-hardness were measured and quantitative samples were taken for algal biomass and chlorophyll-a analysis. Algal biomass results clearly indicated the dominance of green algae. Cluster analyses were carried out, based on both algal data and environmental parameters. The algal data separated sites, whereas the abiotic clustering revealed a temporal aspect. An indicator species analysis determined the characteristic taxa for each species group. Indicator species were then related to environmental factors using a redundancy analysis (RDA). Both pH and conductivity were significant factors, whereas water temperature, alkalinity, Ca2+- and total-hardness were not. The results of the RDA show that three species groups could be identified along a gradient of pH. One group was positively correlated with high alkalinity and another group occurred at higher values of conductivity.  相似文献

Eutrophication and the associated proliferation offilamentous algae were often considered importantcauses of reed die-back that occurred in the sixtiesand seventies at Lake Constance. According to thishypothesis the reduction in lake water nutrientconcentrations during the eighties and nineties shouldhave reduced the abundance of filamentous algae andwhich should have reduced the supposed mechanicalimpact of filamentous algae on the lakeside reedstands. To examine whether this had actually occurred,the condition of the lakeside reed border at LakeConstance (Untersee) was surveyed in 1994 and resultswere compared to those of similar surveys carried outin the years 1981–83. The extent of mechanical damageto reed stalks, the amount of macrophyte wash and thedegree of shoreline erosion were assessed forshoreline segments of 25 m along a total shorelinelength of 65 km. The results showed that mechanicaldamage to reed stalks was generally higher in 1994than in 1981–83, while macrophyte wash and shorelineerosion were generally less severe. The decreasedamount of macrophyte wash was associated with a changein macrophyte species composition from a dominance offloating filamentous algae to a dominance of rootedPotamogetonaceaeand fragile Characeae,and therefore probably was due to the lower nutrientconcentrations of the lake. The opposite trends foundfor mechanical damage to reed stands and the amount ofmacrophyte wash between 1981–83 and 1994, as well asthe absence of relation between the two variables in1994, suggested that macrophyte wash had only a minoreffect on the condition of lakeside reed stands atLake Constance. Highly damaged reed stands and erodedcliffs were often located at wind exposed sites orclose to highly frequented shipping routes in 1994,suggesting that mechanical stress from waves wasresponsible for the damage. Due to the lakewardprogression of reed stands during the early nineties,reed stalks were, on average, located in deeper waterin 1994 than in 1981–83. This might have strengthenedthe mechanical stress from wave action even more andhave caused the higher frequency of mechanical damageto reed stalks. Other causes of damage such asmacrophyte wash, roosts of birds or bird swarmsprobably played a minor and only local role.  相似文献

Benthic grab samples, taken through core holes in sea-ice 1983, returned eight species of marine macrophytes which had associated fauna on at least one sample. A total of 24 animal taxa were found on these eight macrophytes. Phyllophora antarctica had a significantly greater biomass of attached fauna per unit of macrophyte biomass than any of the other seven species. It also had the greatest variety of epiphytic fauna (21 taxa). Phyllophora antarctica was the only macrophyte collected from comparatively protected Ellis Fjord, apart from filamentous algae, including Cladophora subsimplex and Geminocarpus austrogeorgiae, which were found in the most landward basin. It therefore played an important role in the ecology of the fjord. Palmaria decipiens was commonly collected at more exposed coastal sites and was dominant in Long Fjord, characterized here as intermediate in terms of water movement. Sixteen animal taxa were collected from this macrophyte with the greatest numbers being found in July and August. Only four animal taxa were collected from Iridaea cordata. The other five macrophyte species from which epiphytic animals were collected (Porphyra endiviifolium, Plocamium cartilagineum, Desmarestia menziesii, Himantothallus grandifolius and Cladophora subsimplex had animals associated with them on less than half the occasions when they were found.  相似文献

A summary is presented of estimates of distribution and growth of filamentous algae and its effect on the structure and functioning of epibenthic fauna and fish communities in shallow bays on the Swedish west coast. As a consequence of coastal eutrophication vegetation cover has gradually increased during the last decade, and during 1990's most bays in the Skagerrak-Kattegat area were variously covered with filamentous algae during spring and summer (May–July). In some areas filamentous algae (mainlyCladophora andEnteromorpha) completely covered the bottom. In field studies it was demonstrated that increased cover and dominance of filamentous algae result in structural changes of the epibenthic fauna community. Field studies showed that species richness and biomass of epibenthic fauna increased in a sandy bay with a moderate increase (30 to 50%) of filamentous algae cover. At higher cover (90%), biomass of epibenthic fauna was reduced, however, to the same level as for the sandy habitat, although the dominant epibenthic species were different. Heavy growth of epiphytic filamentous algae on eelgrass resulted in reduced biomass and a shift in the species composition of the epibenthic fauna community. Fish assemblage structure was also related to changes in vegetation. In eelgrass beds, fish species numbers were reduced with increasing cover of epiphytic filamentous algae, and at rocky bottoms with kelp algae (dominated byFucus), fish biomass decreased with increasing cover of attached filamentous algae. Further, foraging efficiency of juvenile cod and settling success of plaice were reduced as a response to increasing dominance of filamentous algae.  相似文献

Patchy occurrences of benthic drift algae (i.e. loose lying macroalgal mats) may increase habitat complexity on normally bare soft bottoms, but at the same time, extensive amounts of drifting algal mats are known to stress the benthic fauna. This paper presents results of the first detailed study of the fauna associated with drift algal mats in the northern Baltic Sea. In order to assess the importance of drifting algae as an alternative habitat for benthic fauna, benthic drift algal mats were sampled on shallow (2-9 m) sandy soft bottoms in the outer archipelago of the ?land Islands (Finland). Species composition, abundance and biomass of the macrofauna associated with algal mats were recorded. The results show that drifting algae at times can harbour very high abundances of invertebrates (up to 1116 individuals/g algal dryweight), surpassing invertebrate densities recorded in seagrass communities. The algal fauna varied between sites and over time, and factors such as ambient benthic fauna, exposure to wind-wave disturbance, depth, and algal coverage and condition influenced the invertebrate community composition of the algal mats. Abundance increased while individual biomass of the animals decreased over time (summer season; July-October). A series of laboratory experiments were conducted in order to test the ability of a few important benthic species to move up into, and survive in a drifting algal mat. Macoma balthica, Hydrobia spp., Nereis diversicolor and Bathyporeia pilosa were used in the experiments, and significant differences in their survival and mobility within drifting algae were recorded. This study shows that benthic species differ significantly in their ability to utilise the algal mats, with mainly opportunistic and mobile taxa such as Hydrobia spp., Chironomidae and Ostracoda benefiting from the algae, whereas infaunal species such as M. balthica and B. pilosa are negatively affected. The occurrence of eutrophication induced drifting macroalgal mats has increased significantly during the last decade in the northern Baltic Sea. Hence, the importance of drifting algae as a stress factor and as an alternative habitat for benthic fauna increases.  相似文献

The raolluscan fauna of a special habitat, the high intertidal algal turf, was studied at four stations on the island of Sao Miguel, Azores. The number of species found ranged from 13 to 23. However, a small group of only six species (the bivalve Lasaea adansoni and the gastropods Pisinna punctulum, Omalogyra atomus, Fossarus ambiguus, Skeneopsis planorbis and Alvania postrema) accounted for more than 80% of all the specimens collected. Mollusc density reached values of 20000 specimens per 100 g algal dry weight. The abundance and number of species of molluscs was comparable with those reported for algal zones lower on the Azorean shores.
Wave exposure and seasonality effects were found to be small, presumably because of the relatively mild abiotic conditions and the protective role of the turf. The algal substrata influenced the phytal molluscan community in two ways. First, the abundance of molluscs was significantly correlated with algal dry weight. Secondly, molluscan abundance and diversity were influenced by the algal composition of the turf. A rich algal composition, with several species of branched fleshy and coralline algae, was associated with a rich molluscan fauna. The dominance of coralline algae resulted in a abundant but species-poor fauna, while an almost monospecific turf of Gigartina was poor in both species and number of molluscan fauna.  相似文献

于2009年3月—2010年2月逐月对中国最大人工滩涂湖泊——滴水湖的浮游藻类群落特征进行研究。利用CANOCO4.5软件对浮游藻类数据和环境因子数据进行典范对应分析(CCA),以揭示浮游藻类对生态环境的响应。结果表明:全年共检测到浮游藻类186种及变种,隶属于8门92属,其中绿藻门种类最多,其次是蓝藻门和硅藻门;主要优势种为小席藻、微小平裂藻、银灰平裂藻、不定微囊藻、弱细颤藻、啮蚀隐藻、四尾栅藻、扁圆卵形藻;藻类的年均丰度和年均生物量分别为(4552.29±4591.33)×104cells·L-1和8.15±6.63mg·L-1,藻类现存量各月份间差异极显著(P<0.01),但站点间差异不显著;多样性分析显示,藻类物种多样性较好;典范对应分析表明,水温、总氮等是影响滴水湖藻类群落结构的主要因素。  相似文献

  • 1 A survey of acidified streams in the Loch Ard area of The Trossachs, Scotland, was carried out between 1986 and 1988, to determine the influence of physical and chemical factors on the distribution of benthic algae. Samples were taken on thirty-five occasions from fifteen sites on ten streams. Forty-nine operational taxa of filamentous algae were distinguished. Relative abundance of taxa in samples was scored on a seven-point scale. Estimates of standing crop were made by pigment extraction and ash-free dry weight (AFDW) determination from biomass developed on artificial substrata.
  • 2 No evidence was found for seasonality in standing crop, nor for an increase in standing crop with a decrease in pH. Seasonality in relative abundance was evident for few taxa. Species richness and diversity were highly correlated with pH and correlated chemical variables.
  • 3 Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) carried out using the CANOCO program ordinates species and sites and relates them directly to environmental variables. The most important variable was found to be pH (or an acidification-related variable that is highly correlated with pH), with percentage forest cover and total oxidized nitrogen being of secondary importance. The effect of subdividing the data set, using data based on presence-absence as well as estimated relative abundance, was tested. A comparison of the effects on the distribution of site and species values on the pH vector showed that the results are robust, confirming the value of this semi-quantitative sampling method for use with a difficult algal group. It was possible to infer pH from algal community structure using CANOCO.
  • 4 The pH ranking of species derived from CCA revealed that larger cell diameter taxa do not predominate at low pH, implying that reduction of invertebrate grazing was not an important determinant of algal community composition.

The marked spatial variation in periphyton could reflect differences in exposure, grazing or substratum. To determine if any of these factors was significant, I studied the relationship between the degree of exposure to waves (measured as fetch), grazing intensity (measured as invertebrate biomass) and spatial variation in periphyton biomass in sites of similar substratum along an island in the central mesotrophic basin of Lake Memphremagog (Québec). In spring, there was a positive relationship between fetch and periphyton biomass both on stones and on artificial substrata. This effect was especially strong for diatoms, for algae between 100–1000 µm3, for planktonic forms and for filamentous and long-stalked species. In spring, water renewal encouraged growth of these forms, but the effect disappeared in summer, coincident with silica depletion. Grazers, which were not important in the spatial variation observed in spring, probably contributed to the sudden decline of periphyton in the exposed sites in summer. We conducted a microcosm experiment to evaluate the capability of fauna inhabiting or being transported by drifting filamentous algae to colonize defaunated sediment. We expected meiofauna would perform a quicker and more effective re-colonization of disturbed areas by means of the algal mats than their macrofaunal counterparts. Similarly, within meiofauna, we expected more mobile taxa such as ostracods and harpacticoids to colonize the sediment more readily than other more sedentary ones such as nematodes. Naturally drifting algae were collected from the field and placed in 1 l aquaria on top of 5 cm of defaunated sediment. After 3 and 6 days, one core sample (5 cm deep) was taken from each aquarium; the first 2 cm were sliced into 2 mm layers, and the remaining fraction into 1 cm layers. The sediment remaining in the aquaria was sieved through a 0.5 mm sieve to collect the re-colonizing macrofauna. The dominant macrofaunal taxa inhabiting the algae were juvenile bivalves and gastropods, with Cerastoderma glaucum accounting for the majority of the bivalves and Hydrobia sp. for most of the gastropods. After 3 and 6 days, the most abundant macrofaunal taxa colonizing the sediment were Cerastoderma glaucum, Hydrobia sp. and gammarid amphipods. Higher abundances were found after 6 days than after 3, though differences were not significant for any of the major taxa. Meiofauna inhabiting the algae were dominated by rotifers, nematodes, ostracods, chironomid larvae and harpacticoid copepods. Contrary to our predictions, nematode and harpacticoid species inhabiting the drifting algae were not driven to sediment re-colonization but remained in the algae. Our results indicate that some benthic animals may indeed benefit from drifting algal mats as a means of dispersal and re-colonization of previously defaunated sediments in relatively short periods of time. Also, they may contribute to explain some of the trends found in other studies, regarding species increase under drifting algae and the recovery patterns found in areas often exposed to algal conglomerates.  相似文献

Summary The species composition of periphytic macroinvertebrates on and in flooded trees differs at different localities on the Volta Lake. The main differences concern chironomid and trichopteran larvae. The reasons for this lie in the different exposure of trees to wave action, in the availability of soft wood and bark as a substrate, and in the distance of trees off-shore. All these factors determine the intensity of growth of the periphytic algae. The growth of the periphytic fauna will also be influenced by the density of phytoplankton on which it feeds. Other factors, such as oxygen concentration and the turbidity of the water, are also likely to affect the productivity of the whole community.The abundance of Povilla nymphs, the most common organism in trees, seems to depend on the type of the substrate. The bark of trees is exploited more than the wood, and trees with harder wood are less attacked than those with soft wood. Macroscopically, the male nymphs can be distinguished from female nymphs from a length of 6.0 mm, and they start to emerge when 9.0 mm long. Females emerge from 14.0 mm length. Nymphs tend to be heavier in dense populations. The difference in the weight of nymphs may be due to differences in availability of food.Nymphs of Povilla were found to feed both on solitary and attached periphytic algae, together with detritus and planktonic algae. Because of the great abundance of Povilla the nymphs of this species are of great importance in the conversion of algae into animal protein, being themselves heavily exploited by fish.No lunar periodicity, such as occurs on Lake Victoria, was found, and Povilla in the Volta Lake seems to emerge continuously.  相似文献

Systematic investigations into the temporal and spatial distribution, composition and abundance of protozoa in two regions with different trophic levels in Chaohu Lake, a large, shallow and highly eutrophic freshwater lake in China, were conducted during 2002–2003. A total of 114 species of protozoa, including phytomastigophorans, zoomastigophorans, amoebae and ciliates, were identified from 120 polyurethane foam unit (PFU) samples exposed at four stations and from various types of natural substrates. Of the 114 taxa, 36 core species were found on PFU substrates and 23 of these were found on natural ones. Protozoan abundance and chemical–physical parameters at nine sampling stations, four in the western lake and five in the eastern part, indicate trophic gradient changes along the lake. Seasonal variations in the species composition of major groups at littoral PFU sampling stations illustrate the effect of a severe algal bloom on the protozoan community structure. Temporal and spatial distributions of individual abundance as functions of water temperature and trophic status were revealed. This study demonstrates again that the PFU artificial substrate method samples protozoan communities more effectively than routine natural substrate methods.  相似文献

The phytoplankton community structure, in terms of species composition, total standing crop,and abundance of the dominant algal species, at four stations in Donghu Lake, Wuhan, China, was investigated monthly from January 1994 to December 1996. A total of 260 taxa was observed, of which Chlorophyta (106 taxa) contributed the highest portion of the total number of taxa, followed by Bacillariophyta (82 taxa)and Cyanophyta (32 taxa). The total standing crop measured by means of chlorophyll a content, cell density,and cell biovolume, as well as the abundance of the dominant species, declined in the order of Station I to Station Ⅳ. Seasonal changes of the standing crop varied greatly among the four stations. Although the cell density at the four stations showed a single peak within a year, the peak density varied from July to November, dependent on the sampling year and the station. For chlorophyll a content and cell biovolume,multiple peaks were observed at Stations Ⅰ and Ⅱ, but a single peak was found at Stations Ⅲ and Ⅳ. The phytoplankton community structure indicated that the trophic status was the highest at Station Ⅰ (most eutrophic), followed by Station Ⅱ; Stations Ⅲ and Ⅳ were the least trophic areas. The long-term changes in phytoplankton community structure further suggested that changes in phytoplankton community structure were correlated with water quality, and eutrophication of Donghu Lake had been aggravated since the 1950s.  相似文献

微生物多样性在评估水体生态环境方面发挥着重要作用。本研究以青藏高原纳木措湖为研究对象, 开展水体可培养丝状真菌多样性及影响因子研究。通过膜过滤平置培养法、经典分类法和rRNA转录间隔区(ITS)序列分析对纳木措湖20个采样点的丝状真菌进行分离、纯化及鉴定, 测定水体理化指标, 综合分析丝状真菌空间分布格局与理化因子的相关性。菌种鉴定结果显示, 从纳木措水体样品中共分离纯化出1,412株丝状真菌, 隶属22属47种, 其中链格孢属(Alternaria)、青霉属(Penicillium)和毛霉属(Mucor)为优势属, 链格孢(Alternaria chlamydosporigena)和冻土毛霉(Mucor hiemalis)为优势种; Pearson相关性分析显示, 丝状真菌总丰度与温度、铵态氮、全磷呈显著正相关; 冗余分析显示, 铵态氮、温度、全磷、全氮、盐度及电导率是影响纳木措湖丝状真菌群落组成与分布的主要理化因子。综上所述, 纳木措水体可培养丝状真菌具有较高的物种多样性和空间异质性, 而且水体环境因子影响其分布。  相似文献

1. The patterns of colonization of littoral benthos onto hard substrata on an exposed and a sheltered shore of Lake Purrumbete in Victoria, Australia, and the riffles of its outflow stream (Curdies River) were examined experimentally in winter and summer. The common taxa in the lake (gastropods, amphipods, isopods, planarians, ostracods) also occurred in the stream, although they were not abundant. The stream fauna was dominated by insects. 2. Defaunated half-bricks were sampled at each of three sites at the three different locations (exposed shore, sheltered shore, stream) in winter and summer at weekly or biweekly intervals, with natural stones also being sampled during the colonization period. Colonization patterns of individual taxa which occurred in both the lake and stream, and stream-only taxa, were compared using ANOVA, and the changes in the assemblage through time and between locations were analysed with non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and analysis of similarities (ANOSIM). 3. Colonization in the lake was very rapid, with species richness and assemblage composition on bricks after just one day matching that of natural stones. Colonization in the stream was slower, the assemblage composition not matching natural stones after 42 days in winter but being comparable after 28 days in summer. There was considerable species turnover during colonization in the stream, but little turnover in the lake, with most common taxa back after one day. There was little difference between the two lake shores in colonization patterns. 4. Taxa that occurred in both lake and stream showed broadly similar patterns of colonization, with early occupancy at high densities. In contrast, stream insects showed a variety of colonization strategies. 5. These results indicate that rates and patterns of colonization on to hard substrata are quite different in Lake Purrumbete compared with its outflowing stream. The rapid colonization in this lake indicates great mobility for much of the fauna on hard substrata, possibly by swimming, benthic crawling or passive drift (even attached to floating vegetation). This may be an appropriate strategy in lake littoral zones where the amount of inhabitable hard substrata and accompanying food resources may be limited.  相似文献

We examined the relationship between the δ13C and taxonomic composition of benthic algae collected from a riffle (fast current habitat) of a non‐shaded mountain stream, which is a tributary of the Kiso River, Japan. The benthic algal δ13C ranged from ?20.6 to ?14.2‰ and tended to be 13C‐depleted with increasing relative abundance of upright filamentous cyanobacteria and 13C‐enriched with increasing relative abundance of prostrate filamentous cyanobacteria. Using isotopic mass balance equations, the relative abundance of the dominant taxa, upright and prostrate filamentous cyanobacteria, small diatoms and others, explained 74% of δ13C variability. This study shows a case where the difference in taxonomic composition is a possible source of the isotopic variability of benthic algae, which is a mixture of taxa with distinct isotopic signatures.  相似文献

1. Completion of a large interbasin water transfer system in northern Texas (U.S.A.) provided the opportunity to test the effects of pre-planned, experimental increases (≈×30) in flow on the fish fauna of a small, low-gradient, natural stream that was included as part of the conveyance system. Water from Lake Texoma (Red River basin) was pumped via a 16-km pipeline to the headwaters of Sister Grove Creek (Trinity River basin), which then carried the donor water 50 km downstream to Lake Lavon.
2. Baseline (pre-transfer) data on the composition of fish assemblages at seven stations on the creek or at its confluence with the receiving reservoir were collected monthly for 3 years, and similar data were collected for 2 years during and after trial flows of Lake Texoma water to Sister Grove Creek. We also documented fish abundance at five creek stations immediately before and after three trial flow periods of 10–14 days each in summer and autumn.
3. Multivariate analysis of all routine monthly samples over the 5-year pre- and post-transfer period showed moderate changes in the fish fauna of the creek after initiation of the trial flows. Samples taken within a week before and after the artificial high flows showed little overall change in abundance of individual fish species, but at some stations the quantitative or qualitative change in composition of the local assemblage was substantial.
4. The trial flows lasted 2 weeks or less. Long-term effects of water transfer on the fish fauna of Sister Grove Creek can only be determined after the conveyance system goes into normal operation, with periods of artificial flow of longer duration.  相似文献
