In western Canada, oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. var. oleifera cv. Westar) is seeded during the early months of spring, when ambient temperatures are well below the optimum. This can result in poor seedling emergence. The objectives of the present study were to determine which developmental stages are sensitive to low temperature and whether the effects are thermal or developmental in nature. Seed was germinated at 22, 10 and 6 °C. Fresh weight changes and seedling growth were assessed on the basis of equal accumulated heat units, and the mobilization of storage reserves was assessed by employing antibodies against isocitrate lyase (ICL; EC 4.1.3.1), oleosin and cruciferin. Additionally, de novo protein synthesis was determined by quantifying the incorporation of methionine via in vivo labelling. Low temperature resulted in poor germination and early seedling growth with phase II of germination being most sensitive. At 10 °C, there was a temporal delay in germination that did not affect the overall success of germination. This was a thermal effect as seed at the lower temperatures required the equivalent of 16–24 degree days before germination occurred. Also, seedling growth at 10 °C was lower in comparison to seedlings grown at 22 °C. Seed at 6 °C displayed slow and incomplete germination and poor seedling growth as a result of both thermal and developmental effects.  相似文献

Seed dispersal ecology of Bactris acanthocarpa Mart. (Arecaceae), an Atlantic forest understory palm, was investigated during two years as an attempt to test the following predictions: (i) seeds of Bactris are dispersed by mammals and large-gaped birds; (ii) Bactris benefits from seed dispersal in terms of seed predation avoidance, improvement of seed germination and seedling survival; and (iii) spatial distribution of adults is related to patterns of seed dispersal. The study was conducted at Dois Irmãos Reserve, a 387.4-ha reserve of Atlantic forest in northeastern Brazil (8º S–35º W). Black–rumped agoutis (Dasyprocta prymnolopha) and Guianan squirrels (Sciurus aestuans) were identified as the seed dispersers/predators, moving seeds short distances (< 4 m from parents) and at low rates (0.04-0.05 diaspore/palm/day). Pyrene burial prevented seed predation by vertebrates and reduced by half seed infestation by Scolytidae beetles. Only buried pyrenes germinated. Pyrene predation was not correlated with distance from conspecific adults. In contrast, early seedling mortality was higher near conspecific adults. Most adults (64%) had their nearest conspecific adult neighbour > 4 m away in contrast to 96% of seedlings that occurred concentrated within 4 m from adults (77% under the palm crowns). Here, we present evidence that spatial distribution of B. acanthocarpa is partly due to low rates of seed removal, short-distance seed dispersal by agoutis and squirrels, and early seedling mortality associated with presence of seedlings under palm crowns.  相似文献

Summary Seed set and fruit development in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were studied in relation to female flower receptivity from day — 2 before anthesis to day + 2 after anthesis. The female cucumber flower is protogynous. The pistil was receptive 2 days before anthesis. The iso-electric focusing (IEF) patterns of the stigma/style proteins, were identical from day -5 to day +2. In pollinated flowers in vivo germination and pollen-tube growth in the ovary were affected by pistil age from day -2 to day +2. In addition, differences in sectorial filling in full seeds were observed within the fruits. A negative correlation was observed between the frequency of fertilized ovules in the pedoncular part of the fruit and ovary length at the time of pollination. In the whole fruit, significant differences in the number of full seeds and fruit size at maturity were found, and these were observed to be correlated with the various stages of female flower maturation at pollination. The day -2 and day +2 stages yielded the smallest fruits with few full seeds compared to the day -1, day 0 and day +1 stages, which had the biggest fruits and a large number of full seeds. A strong positive correlation was found between total seed number (including full and empty seeds), fruit length and weight at maturity. All these results suggest that both seed set in the different parts of the fruit and fruit development are controlled by ovular receptivity rather than by stigma/style receptivity.  相似文献

该文在温室内盆播条件下,设置不去除子叶(对照)、去除1/4子叶(轻度子叶去除)、1/2子叶(中度子叶去除)和3/4子叶(重度子叶去除) 4个处理,研究了种子大小和子叶去除处理对辽东栎幼苗生长及其形态学可塑性的影响。结果表明:(1)大种子幼苗株高、基茎、叶片数、单株叶面积、总干质量和根冠比在所有处理均大于小种子幼苗,除株高外,上述其他参数在轻度子叶去除处理的不同大小种子幼苗间均差异显著(P0.05),前者总干质量在中度子叶去除处理与后者差异也显著(P0.05)。大种子幼苗比叶面积和比根长在各处理均大于小种子幼苗,比枝长则相反。(2)随着子叶去除强度增大,大、小种子幼苗株高、基茎、叶片数、单株叶面积和总干质量等均呈减小趋势,株高、基径、叶片数和单株叶面积在重度子叶去除处理均显著小于对照和轻度子叶去除处理;小种子幼苗对子叶损失反应更为敏感,其株高、叶片数、单株叶面积和总干质量在中度子叶去除处理也显著小于对照(P0.05);小种子幼苗根冠比随子叶去除强度增大而增大,在中度和重度子叶去除处理显著大于对照和轻度子叶去除处理(P0.05)。(3)随着子叶去除强度增大,大小种子幼苗的比叶面积和比根长均逐渐增大,但大种子幼苗比枝长持续减小,轻度子叶去除处理的小种子幼苗比枝长最大。  相似文献

In this study, we examined how environmental factors and differences among populations of Lythrum salicaria L. (Lythraceae; purple loosestrife) influenced the establishment of this species into both its preferred wetland habitat and secondary upland habitat. Seeds and seedlings from five parents from each of the three populations were planted in each wetland and upland of two sites in both disturbed and undisturbed plots. More seeds germinated in wetland than in upland sites (31% as compared to 11%) and, although a disturbance resulted in greater germination (23% as compared to 17% in undisturbed plots), there was no interaction with habitats. The results of a simultaneous greenhouse germination study in which seeds were planted under saturated and drained conditions suggest that the higher germination observed in wetland sites was due to the higher moisture present at such sites (79% vs. 45% in saturated and drained conditions, respectively). Disturbance enhanced both germination and growth of L. salicaria and this was especially so for seedlings. Dry weights of seedlings from disturbed plots were five times greater than those from undisturbed plots ( =9.2 vs. 1.8g in disturbed and undisturbed conditions, respectively). In addition to environmental factors, population differences are likely to play an important role in the spread of L. salicaria as we found differences between the populations in both life stages examined. One of the populations germinated equally well in both moisture treatments. In our seedling establishment experiment, one of the populations produced both the smallest plants and the most and earliest flowers, suggesting superior reproduction.  相似文献

A 2-year field experiment was performed to assess regeneration, establishment and growth of the invasive polycarpic perennial Brassicaceae Bunias orientalis L. from transplanted juveniles and propagules (seeds, fruits and root fragments). Further treatments were: different planting depths of the propagules, different root fragment sizes and a varied competition intensity by the matrix vegetation. In contrast to a high number of individuals established from planted juveniles (ca. 90 %), only relatively few propagules gave rise to seedlings or regenerating plants (0–16 %). However, upon emergence, all plants showed low mortality. Although the number of regenerated or recruited plants was affected by all treatments, only one treatment level (the use of very small root fragments of 1 cm length) completely failed in establishing plants. Plants experiencing low competition intensity attained high aboveground performance and reproductive output as well as reproductive success within two growth periods. Under high competition intensity recruitment, regeneration and growth were strongly negatively affected. The high morphological plasticity of rosette growth of B. orientalis seems to be advantageous for persistence in such situations. The results show that young B. orientalis plants are robust and can efficiently sequester and translate elevated resources into rapid growth and early reproductive output although the species is a rather long-lived iteroparous perennial. In addition, population foundation or regeneration can be based on both seeds and root fragments, even when buried under a thick soil layer. This seems to be a very efficient adaption to habitats which are subject to anthropogenic soil perturbations.  相似文献

Intraspecific variation in seed size is common in wild plant populations and has important consequences for the reproductive success of individual plants. Multiple, often conflicting evolutionary forces mediated by biotic as well as abiotic agents may maintain such a variation. In this paper we assessed seed size variation in a population of the threatened, commercially important palm Euterpe edulis in southeast Brazil. We investigated (i) how this variation affects the probability of attack by vertebrate and invertebrate post-dispersal seed predators, and (ii) if seed size influences the outcome of seeds damaged by beetles in terms of seed germination and early survival of seedlings. Euterpe edulis seeds varied in diameter from 8.3 to 14.1 mm. Neither insects nor rodents selected the seeds they preyed upon based on seed size. Seed germination and total, shoot and root biomasses of one-year seedlings were significantly and positively affected by seed size. Root biomass and seedling survival were negatively affected by seed damage caused by a scolytid beetle (Coccotrypes palmarum) whose adults bore into seeds to consume part of the endosperm, but do not oviposit on them. Seed size had a marginally significant effect on seedling survival. Therefore, if any advantage is accrued by E. edulis individuals producing large seeds, this is because of greater seed germination success and seedling vigor. If this is so, even a relatively narrow range of variation in seed size as observed in the E. edulis population studied may translate into differential success of individual plants.  相似文献

We investigated the relationship between the fruit phenology of Prunus jamasakura and the fruit-feeding period of the Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus). The purposes of this study were to determine (1) when bears feed on the fruit of P. jamasakura in relation to phenology; (2) whether ingestion damages seeds; and (3) how ingestion influences seed germination. We assessed the relationship between the phenology of fruit maturation (size, sugar concentration, color, persistence, and germination percentage) and the feeding period of bears in the field, as judged from bear shelves and claw marks. We also compared the germination percentage of seeds ingested by captive bears with that of uningested. Bears fed on the fruit from days 50 to 66 after flowering, when most of the fruits were on the tree and became large, the germination percentage of seeds increased, and the sugar concentration became high. Bears fed only on mature fruits and so obtained high-quality nutrients. Germination tests showed that ingestion of fruits by the bears caused no physical damage to the seeds. Ingested seeds did not show a significant difference in germination percentage from seeds, whose pulp was artificially removed. These results indicate that bears are potentially effective dispersers from a qualitative perspective and, to some extent, from a quantitative perspective.  相似文献

Dalbergia miscolobium (Papilionaceae) is a tree of the Brazilian cerrado that produces ovaries with two ovules. Only one ovule usually matures, but when two mature, they are smaller than seeds of single-seeded pods. Germination percentage was lower in small seeds than in medium or large seeds. In general, small seeds gave rise to smaller seedlings (dry mass) than did medium and large seeds. The root/shoot ratio, however, was very similar for the first six months, indicating that this ratio is consistent across seedling sizes. There was no correlation between seed size and relative growth rate. Single-seeded fruit production in D. miscolobium resulted in greater seed reserves and increased fruit dispersal distance; single-seeded fruits were lighter than double-seeded ones. Together, these two features should increase the probability of successful seedling establishment of seeds from single-seeded versus double-seeded fruits.  相似文献

该研究以果实大小有明显差异的26个白及果序共87枚果实为材料,分析了果实形态(包括果实重量、长度及直径)与种子结实率的相关性。结果表明:果实重量与结实率的相关性最为密切,相关系数为0.786,达到中等正相关;其次是果实直径,相关系数为0.634;最后是果实长度,相关系数为0.553。对10枚果实及种胚大小测量结果显示,果实形态与种胚大小相关性为弱相关,不同果实种胚大小相差较大,种胚直径和种胚长度平均分别为177.9μm和359.0μm,最大分别为241.9μm和528.6μm,最小分别为64.5μm和114.3μm;单粒白及种子平均重3.90μg,87枚果实中,单枚果实平均种子数量为10 436粒,最大为39 488粒。该研究结果表明果实重量及饱满程度(直径),可以作为评价白及果实质量(种子结实率)的参考指标。  相似文献

In this study, conditions were optimized for transient gene expression in Rough Lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush.), a major rootstock used in the citrus growing regions of Pakistan.Agrobacterium tumefaciens carrying the binary vector p35GUSINT, containingNPT II andGUS genes, was used in the study. The transformation method was based on injection ofAgrobacterium intoCitrus fruits followed by histochemical assay ofGUS activity in different tissues. Different tissues of mature fruits exhibited significantly different percentages of transientGUS expression: in rind (76%), spongy tissue (92%), juice vesicles (0%) and seeds (83%) (P<0.01)., The incubation period after injecting theAgrobacterium culture also showed a significant (P<0.01) effect on the transient expression ofGUS in these tissues. An incubation period of 48 h was found to be the best (72%) for transformation of whole fruit, followed by 72 h (67%) and 96 h (49%). TransientGUS expression also varied significantly (P<0.01) in juice vesicles and seeds as fruit matured. Juice vesicles from mature fruits showed no transientGUS expression, while those from immature fruits showed 50% expression. Furthermore, transformation of seeds had no effect on their germination capability. Germinating seeds from mature fruits injected withAgrobacterium culture showed tolerance to kanamycin (100 mg/L), which varied with the incubation period (55% at 48 h, 25% at 72 h and 23% at 96 h). This report offers an easy protocol for transient expression studies of transgenes and has the potential to be used for stable transformation ofCitrus.  相似文献

以高寒草甸克隆植物黄帚橐吾为实验材料,通过遮荫网模拟植被遮荫,研究种子大小与萌发及幼苗生长能力的关系和幼苗对光照条件的反应。结果表明:(1)在自然光照下,黄帚橐吾种子大小对种子萌发的影响显著,大种子的萌发率高于小种子。遮荫生境下,大、小种子萌发率有所降低,但遮荫对小种子萌发的影响比大种子显著。小种子的萌发率下降了近1/8,而大种子的萌发率仅下降了1/11。(2)黄帚橐吾种子大小对幼苗生物量积累影响显著,大种子幼苗总生物量(TB)大于小种子幼苗的。但生物量的分配与播种时间相关,播种后60 d,在自然光照条件下,大种子幼苗对根生物量的分配大于小种子幼苗,而对叶生物量的分配则正好相反。在遮荫环境中,大、小种子幼苗普遍对根的生物量分配增加,大种子幼苗根冠比(R/S)大于小种子幼苗。(3)黄帚橐吾种子大小对幼苗的生长也有明显影响。在自然光照下,小种子幼苗的相对生长速率(RGR)较大于大种子幼苗,但叶面积比率(LAR)、叶面积干质量比(SLA)、叶干质量(LWR)差别不明显。在遮荫条件下,幼苗的LAR、SLA、LWR显著增加,但大、小种子幼苗间差异不显著,幼苗的RGR减小,小种子幼苗的减小趋势大于大种子幼苗。  相似文献

Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb.) is a non-indigenous, invasive woody vine in North America that proliferates in disturbed open sites. Unlike most invasive species, C. orbiculatus exhibits a sit and wait strategy by establishing and persisting indefinitely in undisturbed, closed canopy forest and responding to canopy disturbance with rapid growth, often overtopping trees. We compared fruit fates of C. orbiculatus and native American holly (Ilex opaca). We also explored mechanisms for this sit and wait invasion strategy by testing the effect of C. orbiculatus fruit crop density on removal rates and by examining the influence of seed treatment and light intensity on seed germination and seedling growth. More C. orbiculatus than I. opaca fruits became damaged, and damage occurred earlier. More fruit fell from C. orbiculatus than I. opaca, but removal rates by frugivores did not differ (76.0 ± 4.2% vs 87.5 ± 3.7%, respectively). Density (number of fruits in a patch) of C. orbiculatus did not influence removal rates. Scarification (bird-ingestion) of C. orbiculatus seed delayed germination but seeds germinated in similar proportion to manually defleshed seeds (sown either singly or all seeds from a fruit). Germination of seeds within intact fruits was inhibited and delayed compared to other treatments. Seed treatment did not affect seedling growth. The proportion of seeds germinating and time until germination was similar among five light intensity levels, ranging from full sun to closed-canopy. Seedlings in >70% photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) had more leaves, heavier shoots, and longer, heavier roots than seedlings at lower PAR levels. Results show that most (>75%) C. orbiculatus seeds are dispersed, seedlings can establish in dense shade, and plants grow rapidly when exposed to high light conditions. Control strategies for this highly invasive species should likely focus on minimizing seed dispersal by vertebrates.  相似文献

In germinated loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seeds arginine accumulates in the seedling during its growth immediately following germination. The enzyme arginase (L-arginine amidinohydrolase, EC 3.5.3.1) is responsible for hydrolyzing this arginine into ornithine and urea. Loblolly pine arginase was purified to homogeneity from seedling cotyledons by chromatographic separation on DE-52 cellulose, Matrex Green and arginine-linked Sepharose 4B. The enzyme was purified 148-fold and a single polypeptide band was identified as arginase. The molecular mass was determined to be 140 kDa by FPLC, while the subunit size was shown to be 37 kDa by SDS-PAGE, predicting a homotetramer holoprotein. Removal of manganese from the enzyme abolishes catalytic activity, which can be restored by incubating the protein with Mn2+. Antibodies, raised against the arginase subunit, are able to immunotitrate arginase activity and are monospecific for arginase on immunoblots.  相似文献

An evergreen oak species, Cyclobalanopsis multinervis, and a deciduous oak species, Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata were grown from acorns under two light levels (full sunlight and shade at about 18 % of full sunlight, simulating the light intensities in forest clearings and gaps, respectively) for one growing season. Three hypotheses were tested: (i) the deciduous species grows faster than the evergreen species in forest gaps and clearings; (ii) the deciduous species responds more strongly in terms of growth and morphology to variation in light climate than the evergreen species; and (iii) seedling size is positively correlated to acorn size. The results showed: (i) at both light levels, the deciduous seedlings gained significantly more growth in biomass and height than the evergreen seedlings; (ii) both species produced significantly more biomass in full sunlight than in shade, without showing any significant difference in height between treatments. Increase in light intensity improved the growth of the deciduous seedlings more strongly; (iii) at a similar age, the deciduous seedlings showed a greater response in leaf morphology and biomass allocation to variation in light levels, but when compared at a similar size, biomass allocation patterns did not differ significantly between species; (iv) bigger acorns tended to produce larger seedlings, larger leaf sizes and more leaf area, between and within species. These differences demonstrate that the deciduous species is gap-dependent and has the advantage over the evergreen species in forest gaps and clearings.  相似文献

We investigated the role of seed packaging (division of total seed volume among individual seeds) and fruit color in determining feeding preferences of American Robins (Turdus migratorius). Experiments were conducted using artificial fruits with either 8 small plastic beads or a single large one with equivalent volume. Other fruit characters were held constant. As predicted, large seeds were voided rapidly by regurgitation, resulting in higher pulp consumption rates for large-seeded fruits than for small-seeded ones, whose seeds were passed through the gut. Most birds apparently used this difference in profitability as a choice criterion: four of seven preferred large-seeded fruits. That three individuals did not do so suggests that birds may differ in their ability to perceive minor differences in fruit profitability, or to use them as choice criteria. Pulp color was also important: blue fruits were preferred by all seven birds. This preference was surprising, since Robins commonly feed on red fruits in the field.  相似文献

The butenolide, 3-methyl-2H-furo[2, 3-c]pyran-2-one, is an highly active compound isolated from plant-derived smoke. This compound is known to stimulate seed germination in a wide range of plants akin to smoke or aqueous extracts of smoke. The present study attempted to elucidate the role of the butenolide in overcoming detrimental effects of low and high temperatures on tomato seed germination and seedling growth. The germination percentage followed a parabolic curve for temperatures ranging from 10 to 40°C, with 25°C being the optimum for all treatments. Control seeds showed radicle emergence at two extreme temperatures (10 and 40°C) and seedlings failed to develop further, even upon prolonged incubation. By comparison the butenolide-treated seeds grew into phenotypically normal seedlings at these non-optimum temperatures. The smoke–water-treated seeds had an intermediate response as only a fraction of germinated seed developed into normal seedlings. Seedling vigour indices as well as seedling weight were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) for butenolide-treated seeds at all temperatures. Furthermore, seedlings developed in the presence of the butenolide had about a 1:1 correspondence between root and shoot length. Butenolide-treated seeds grew better than the control seeds in the temperature shift experiments. A gradual decline in the vigour index values was recorded with an increased duration of incubation at the extreme temperatures. Results of the present study are very important from an horticultural point of view as they indicate the potential use of the butenolide compound in restoring normal seed germination and seedling establishment in tomato below and above optimum temperatures.  相似文献

Seed water content is high during early development of tomato seeds (10–30 d after pollination (DAP)), declines at 35 DAP, then increases slightly during fruit ripening (following 50 DAP). The seed does not undergo maturation drying. Protein content during seed development peaks at 35 DAP in the embryo, while in the endosperm it exhibits a triphasic accumulation pattern. Peaks in endosperm protein deposition correspond to changes in endosperm morphology (i.e. formation of the hard endosperm) and are largely the consequence of increases in storage proteins. Storage-protein deposition commences at 20 DAP in the embryo and endosperm; both tissues accumulate identical proteins. Embryo maturation is complete by 40 DAP, when maximum embryo protein content, size and seed dry weight are attained. Seeds are tolerant of premature drying (fast and slow drying) from 40 DAP.Thirty-and 35-DAP seeds when removed from the fruit tissue and imbibed on water, complete germination by 120 h after isolation. Only seeds which have developed to 35 DAP produce viable seedlings. The inability of isolated 30-DAP seed to form viable seedlings appears to be related to a lack of stored nutrients, since the germinability of excised embryos (20 DAP and onwards) placed on Murashige and Skoog (1962, Physiol. Plant. 15, 473–497) medium is high. The switch from a developmental to germinative mode in the excised 30- and 35-DAP imbibed seeds is reflected in the pattern of in-vivo protein synthesis. Developmental and germinative proteins are present in the embryo and endosperm of the 30- and 35-DAP seeds 12 h after their isolation from the fruit. The mature seed (60 DAP) exhibits germinative protein synthesis from the earliest time of imbibition. Thymelaea velutina (Thymelaeaceae) is a dioecious shrub that presents a unique type of heterocarpy which consists of the simultaneous production of dry and fleshy fruits. It is endemic to the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean) and is found both in dunes and mountain areas. The goal of this study was to identify which factors influence the production of both fruit types, examining the variation of their effects at a spatio-temporal scale (comparing two localities in different years). Specifically, we investigated (1) whether pollen limitation influences the type of fruit produced, and (2) the possible differences in seed size, mass, dispersal capacity, seed predation, germination patterns and seedling survival between fruit types. We also examined if the production of fleshy fruits was modified with the application of gibberellins to reproductive branches. Although fleshy fruits were consistently more abundant than dry ones at both populations, their proportion was significantly higher at the site with greater precipitation. The addition of either pollen or gibberellins did not affect the proportion of each fruit type. Seeds in fleshy fruits are consistently larger, heavier and more likely to be dispersed than seeds in dry fruits, but germinability, germination rate and seedling survival was similar among fruit types. Heterocarpy in this species is currently maintained as there is no apparent factor that exerts any strong selective pressure on either fruit type. The two fruit types might even have different `functions', one serving especially for dispersal and population expansion and the other for producing a seed bank that ensures an eventual germination.  相似文献
