The bioavailability of stabilized ferrous sulfate was studied by means of the prophylactic-preventive test in rats. For comparative purposes, ferrous sulfate was used as reference standard. The test was performed in male weaned rats during 3 weeks, which were randomized into three groups of ten animals each. A control group received a basal diet of low iron content while the other groups received the same diet added with iron at a dose of 15 mg/kg as FeSO4 7H2O and stabilized ferrous sulfate, respectively. Individual hemoglobin concentrations and weights were determined at the beginning and at the end of the study, and food intake was daily registered. Iron bioavailability (BioFe) of each source was calculated as the ratio between the amount of iron incorporated into hemoglobin during the treatment and the total iron intake per animal. A relative biological value was obtained as the ratio between the BioFe of stabilized ferrous sulfate and the reference standard given a value of 96%. Stabilized ferrous sulfate showed a high bioavailability, and when it is used to fortify dairy products as cheese and fluid milk in a dose of 15–20 mg of iron per kilogram, it behaved inertly in relation to the sensorial properties of the fortified food. These results suggest that this iron compound is a promising source to be use in food fortification.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to propose a granulation mechanism in order to interpret all the experimental observations that arose during experiments on two UASB reactors, where one was supplemented with ferrous iron at a dose of 0.01 g Fe(2+) per g COD feed. This supplementation with ferrous iron allowed COD removal of more than 98% at a loading rate of 9 g COD/L per day, which was 24% higher than for the reactor not receiving the ferrous iron. Moreover, in the Fe(2+)-dosed reactor, a higher increase of the granule diameter was observed. Indeed, the granule diameter in the Fe(2+)-dosed reactor at the end of the experiments was 56% greater than that of the control reactor. This mechanism describes the course of anaerobic granule growth. The formation of the inorganic precipitate of ferrous sulphide constitutes the inert nuclei around which the biomass is attached. This initiates the formation of new granules.  相似文献

A clinical trial was conducted in Cameroon in order to evaluate in humans the possible effect of a single dose of ivermectin (150 micrograms per kg) on the pre-adult stages of Onchocerca volvulus. The incidence of the skin microfilariae was measured in two groups of patients who initially had negative biopsies, and who were subsequently treated, immediately after the seasonal peak of transmission of O. volvulus, either with a combination of ivermectin + ferrous sulphate, or with ferrous sulphate alone. One year after the treatment, i.e. 14 months after the start of the transmission period, the proportion of patients with positive skin biopsies, and their mean microfilarial loads, did not differ significantly between the two groups. Thus a single dose of ivermectin does not seem to have any perceptible prophylactic effect against O. volvulus.  相似文献

Presence of Leptospirillum ferrooxidans plays significant role in ferric sulphate generation during bioleaching process. Thus, an attempt was made to select L. ferrooxidans from the polymetallic concentrate leachate and further developed it for enhanced ferric iron regeneration from the leachate in shake flask, stirred tank and column reactor. When ferric to ferrous iron ratio in the shake flask reached to 20:1, L. ferrooxidans out competed Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and accounted for more than 99% of the total population. The isolate was confirmed by 16S rRNA genes sequence analysis and named as L. ferrooxidans SRPCBL. When the culture was exposure to UV dose and the oxidation-reduction potential of the inoculation medium was adjusted to 40 0mV by ferrous:ferric iron ratio, the IOR reached to as high as 1.2 g/L/h in shake flask, even with initial ferrous iron concentration of 200 g/L. The chalcopyrite concentrate leachate containing 12.8, 15.7, and 42.0 g/L ferrous iron, ferric iron and copper, respectively was studied for ferric iron regeneration with the developed polymetallic resistant L. ferrooxidans SRPCBL in stirred tank and a developed biofilm airlift column, the highest IOR achieved were 2.20 g/L/h and 3.1 g/L/h, respectively, with ferrous oxidation efficiency of 98%. The ferric regeneration ability of the developed isolate from the leachate proves useful for a two-stage metal extraction process.  相似文献

EHb-a herbo-mineral formulations of iron (ferrous form) produced a significantly higher and dose dependent increase in the haemoglobin level, as compared to Fefol (a non-complex-chelated iron preparation). Also, EHb did not produce any overt toxicity or gastric irritation at these dose levels. The results suggest that EHb can be of a better choice in the treatment of anaemia than any other commercially available chelated iron preparations.  相似文献

The iron compounds used for food fortification have to meet certain requisites related to their bioavailability, absorption mechanism, and toxicity, since they will be consumed by a massive population group. With these purposes, we evaluated a new product used for the iron fortification of milk and lacteous derivatives, called SFE-171TM, which is a ferrous sulfate, microencapsulated with phospholipids. The bioavailability studies were carried out using four groups of 30 female mice each. In two groups, we studied the absorption of ferrous ascorbate and ferrous sulfate, both in water as reference standards, which show absorptions of 13.1±4.9% and 13.2±4.3%, respectively. With the third group, we studied the absorption of ferrous sulfate in milk; its value, 7.9±3.2%, is significantly lower than that of the remaining groups, with ap<0.01. The studies with SFE-171TM in milk, were performed on the fourth group, with a result of 11.6±4.5%, demonstrating that its absorption does not differ significantly from that of the reference standards. The absorption mechanism was determined by means of in vivo self-displacement studies of the ferrous ion and the SFE-171TM, taking ferrous sulfate as the reference compound. For this study, 210 female mice were used, and no significant difference between the absorption mechanism of both products could be observed. Toxicity studies of the new product with regard to ferrous sulfate were carried out with two groups of 70 female mice each and two groups of 70 male mice each. The lethal dose 50% LD50 for SFE-171TM and for ferrous sulfate was 1200 and 680 mg/kg for female mice and 1230 and 670 mg/kg for male mice, respectively, demonstrating that the toxicity of the first product is substantially lower than that of the reference standard. We conclude that the iron product under study has a high bioavailability, an absorption mechanism equal to that of nonhemic iron, and lower toxicity than ferrous sulfate.  相似文献

The ferrous sulphate-benzoic acid-xylenol orange (FBX) chemical dosimeter, due to its aqueous form can measure average volume doses and hence may overcome the limitations of point dosimetry. The present study was undertaken to validate the use of FBX dosimeter for rectum and bladder dose measurement during intracavitary brachytherapy (ICBT) and transperineal interstitial brachytherapy (TIB). We filled cylindrical polypropylene tubes (PT) and Foley balloons (FB) with FBX solution and used them as substitutes for rectum and bladder dose measurements respectively. A water phantom was fabricated with provision to place the Fletcher-type ICBT and MUPIT template applicators, and FBX filled PT and FB within the phantom. The phantom was then CT scanned for treatment planning and subsequent irradiation. Our results show that the average difference between DVH derived dose value and FBX measured dose is 3.5% (PT) and 13.7% (FB) for ICBT, and 9% (PT) and 9.9% (FB) for TIB. We believe that the FBX system should be able to provide accuracy and precision sufficient for routine quality assurance purposes. The advantage of the FBX system is its water equivalent composition, average volume dose measuring capability, and energy and temperature independent response as compared to TLD or semiconductor dosimeters. However, detailed studies will be needed with regards to its safety before actual in-vivo dose measurements are possible with the FBX dosimeter.  相似文献

Chemical tools capable of detecting ferrous iron with oxidation-state specificity have only recently become available. Coincident with this development in chemical biology has been increased study and appreciation for the importance of ferrous iron during infection and more generally in host–pathogen interaction. Some of the recent findings are surprising and challenge long-standing assumptions about bacterial iron homeostasis and the innate immune response to infection. Here, we review these recent developments and their implications for antibacterial therapy.  相似文献

Interaction between Vitamin C (VitC) and transition metals can induce the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). VitC may also act as an ROS scavenger and as a metal chelant. To examine these possibilities, we tested in vivo the effect of two doses of VitC (1 and 30 mg/kg of mouse body weight) on the genotoxicity of known mutagens and transition metals. We used the alkaline version of the comet assay to assess DNA damage in peripheral white blood cells of mice. Animals were orally given either water (control), cyclophosphamide (CP), methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), cupric sulfate or ferrous sulfate. A single treatment with each VitC dose was administered after treatment with the mutagens or the metal sulfates. Both doses of VitC enhanced DNA damage caused by the metal sulfates. DNA damage caused by MMS was significantly reduced by the lower dose, but not by the higher dose of VitC. For CP, neither post-treatment dose of VitC affected the DNA damage level. These results indicate a modulatory role of Vitamin C in the genotoxicity/repair effect of these compounds. Single treatment with either dose of VitC showed genotoxic effects after 24 h but not after 48 h, indicating repair. Double treatment with VitC (at 0 and 24 h) induced a cumulative genotoxic response at 48 h, more intense for the higher dose. The results suggest that VitC can be either genotoxic or a repair stimulant, since the alkaline version of the comet assay does not differentiate "effective" strand breaks from those generated as an intermediate step in excision repair (incomplete excision repair sites). Further data is needed to shed light upon the beneficial/noxious effects of VitC.  相似文献

Iron fortification of foods continues to be one of the preferred ways of improving the iron status of the population. Dairy product is a common product in the diet; therefore, it is a plausible vehicle for iron fortification. This study aims to investigate the bioavailability of ferrous gluconate stabilised with glycine (FGSG) in a fresh cheese fortified with zinc. The iron bioavailability of fresh cheese fortified with either FGSG and with or without zinc and FGSG in aqueous solution and a water solution of ferrous ascorbate (reference dose) was studied using double radio iron (55Fe and 59Fe) erythrocyte incorporation in 15 male subjects. All subjects presented with normal values for iron status parameters. The geometric mean of iron bioavailability for the water solution of FGSG was 38.2 %, adjusted to 40 % from reference doses (N.S.). Iron bioavailability in fresh cheese fortified with Ca and Zn was 15.4 % and was 23.1 % without Zn, adjusted to 40 % from reference doses (N.S.). The results of the present study show that the novel iron compound ferrous gluconate stabilised with glycine in a fresh cheese matrix is a good source of iron and can be used in iron fortification programmes.  相似文献

Solutions of the ferrous sulfate, of the albumin and of the suspension of liposomes were irradiated by mixed gamma-neutron radiation (fission spectrum neutrons, contribution of gamma-component to the absorbed dose up to 20%) at the pulse reactor BARS-6 with single-pulse (duration 100 micros) or continuous radiation (duration 60 min). It was shown, that after the pulse irradiation the concentration of the malonic dialdehyde in liposomes was in 3-4 times higher than after the continuous radiation at equal absorbed doses (p < 0.05). On the contrary, the irradiation of the liposomes suspension as well as of the solutions of the ferrous sulfate and of the albumin in a mode of single-pulse or of continuous mode did not reveal the statistically significant differences in the production of Fe3+ ions and of peroxides of the albumin for two mode of the radiation action.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to know the iron dynamics and action of the collagen-Fe2+ complex at tissular level. The results showed that the collagen-Fe2+ complex is biocompatible at tissular level and the ferrous iron entered the animal organism on the well-known metabolic pathways. When a high dose of the complex was administered, an overloading with hemosiderin of macrophages and hepatocytes was noticed.  相似文献

Factors affecting the astaxanthin production by a unicellular green alga, Haematococcus pluvialis UTEX 16, were evaluated with sequential fractional factorial design. To simulate an actual production mode, a two-stage process was adapted for astaxanthin production: the alga was first cultivated under vegetative growth conditions, and then astaxanthin production was induced by applying various induction methods. A high dose of irradiation was most effective for the production of astaxanthin both in weight (mg/g) and in cellular (pg/cell) contents. A combination of nitrogen deficiency and acetate addition also significantly increased the astaxanthin content of cells on a dry weight basis. Meanwhile, the acetate addition alone increased only the cellular content of astaxanthin. Although the addition of ferrous ion alone had a negative effect on the weight content of astaxanthin, simultaneous addition of ferrous ion and acetate was effective for increasing the cellular content of astaxanthin.  相似文献

The oxidation of ferrous iron and elemental sulfur by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans that was absorbed and unabsorbed onto the surface of sulfur prills was studied. Unadsorbed sulfur-grown cells oxidized ferrous iron at a rate that was 3 to 7 times slower than that of ferrous iron-grown cells, but sulfur-grown cells were able to reach the oxidation rate of the ferrous iron-adapted cells after only 1.5 generations in a medium containing ferrous iron. Bacteria that were adsorbed to sulfur prills oxidized ferrous iron at a rate similar to that of unadsorbed sulfur-grown bacteria. They also showed the enhancement of ferrous iron oxidation activity in the presence of ferrous iron, even though sulfur continued to be available to the bacteria in this case. An increase in the level of rusticyanin together with the enhancement of the ferrous iron oxidation rate were observed in both sulfur-adsorbed and unadsorbed cells. On the other hand, sulfur oxidation by the adsorbed bacteria was not affected by the presence of ferrous iron in the medium. When bacteria that were adsorbed to sulfur prills were grown at a higher pH (ca. 2.5) in the presence of ferrous iron, they rapidly lost both ferrous iron and sulfur oxidation capacities and became inactive, apparently because of the deposition of a jarosite-like precipitate onto the surface to which they were attached.  相似文献

Probiotics and prebiotics, which can change the colonic microenvironment, are the areas of current interest. Unutilizable fractions of the foods and fortificants, which reach the colon can affect the profile of probiotics. Effects of eight such factors viz. zinc sulphate, zinc carbonate, ferrous sulphate, ferric citrate, quercetin, gallic acid, phytic acid, and oxalic acid were, therefore, investigated on 24 H growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus (L1) and Lactobacillus plantarum (L2), two isolates of bifidobacteria (longum (L3) and bifidum (L4)) and a marketed consortium (L5) of eight probiotic cultures. MRS medium with marketed fructooligosaccharide as the only source of carbon was used for study of dose response curves. Quercetin and zinc sulphate showed significant positive effect for L1 and L5 (P < 0.01), whereas there was slight positive effect or no effect on growth of other probiotics. Phytic acid showed a significant inhibitory effect for L2 and a slight inhibitory effect on L3 and L4 whereas L5 were able to tolerate phytic acid. Oxalic acid had slight positive effect for L1 (P < 0.05) and L5 and no effect on growth of other probiotics (P > 0.05). Further, zinc sulphate, ferrous sulphate, quercetin, and oxalic acid significantly inhibited growth of E. coli (P < 0.05)  相似文献

The Oxford Whole Body Counter was used to measure absorption from various therapeutic preparations of iron in five groups of subjects. Succinic acid enhanced absorption of iron when added to a solution of ferrous fumarate, but not when given with tablets of ferrous fumarate or ferrous sulphate. Ferrous fumarate plus ascorbic acid was absorbed better than ferrous fumarate alone but no better than ferrous sulphate. The addition of ascorbic acid and succinic acid to tablets of ferrous sulphate did not enhance absorption significantly.  相似文献

Summary Pot experiments with oats on manganese deficient sandy and moor soils, which are not deficient in iron, showed a steady increase in yield and manganese uptake by the plants with increasing additions of ferrous sulphate at four levels of manganese. Residual effects from ferrous sulphate application were not found either in the case of yields or manganese uptake by oats on a sandy soil.The effect observed following application of ferrous sulphate was due to a manganese effect. This is corroborated by the coincidence of the yield curves, showing the relationship between absorbed manganese and yield of dry matter, following the application of manganese sulphate and ferrous sulphate.Soils treated withM magnesium nitrate in the presence of equivalent quantities of either ferrous sulphate or hydroquinone yielded the same amounts of manganese. This result suggests that the manganese effect of ferrous sulphate is due to reduction of higher manganese oxides by ferrous sulphate.  相似文献

The absorption of heme iron has been described as distinctly different from that of non-heme iron. Moreover, whether heme and non-heme iron compete for absorption has not been well established. Our objective was to investigate the potential competition between heme and non-heme iron as ferrous sulfate for absorption, when both iron forms are ingested on an empty stomach. Twenty-six healthy nonpregnant women were selected to participate in two iron absorption studies using iron radioactive tracers. We obtained the dose?Cresponse curve for absorption of 0.5, 10, 20, and 50?mg heme iron doses, as concentrated red blood cells. Then, we evaluated the absorption of the same doses, but additionally we added non-heme iron, as ferrous sulfate, at constant heme/non-heme iron molar ratio (1:1). Finally, we compare the two curves by a two-way ANOVA. Iron sources were administered on an empty stomach. One factor analysis showed that heme iron absorption was diminished just by increasing total heme iron (P?<?0.0001). The addition of non-heme iron as ferrous sulfate did not have any effect on heme iron absorption (P?=?NS). We reported evidence that heme and non-heme iron as ferrous sulfate does not compete for absorption. The mechanism behind the absorption of these iron sources is not clear.  相似文献
